Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Now that John Edwards has admitted to his affair with 42-year-old Rielle Hunter, the big test looms again before the American public: Do we care? Do we think it matters? Do we believe that there should be any code of conduct or moral standard for those in public office, even if it is the highest one in the land?

Justifications for political improprieties abound. There are historical ones: "Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John F. Kennedy, Bill Clinton, etc. had moral failures, so what's the big deal?" There are also personal ones: "We shouldn't judge. No one is perfect. Who are we to point fingers?"

Don't misunderstand me. I believe in personal redemption. I myself have experienced it, as I wrote about in the chapter "A sin that became a blessing" in my autobiography, "Against All Odds," in which I discuss an adulterous one-night stand in the early '60s that resulted in my wonderful daughter Dina. That is why I hope, as he says, John Edwards truly has asked God and his wife for forgiveness, and I pray for their restoration and the long road that results from it.

But then again, John Edwards continues to minimize his culpability by playing linguistic and moral dodge ball. He lied to his closest colleagues and the public for nearly two years about the affair. And even in his confession last week, he doesn't call it a "lie," a "sin," an "affair" or "adultery." Rather, he repeatedly calls it merely a "mistake" or a "serious error in judgment." Is that all it is?

I believe leadership should be above reproach. I believe those who govern should lead also in civility and decency and that their character should be congruent with their call to office. Like parents to children, a nation's politicians' integrity and character should supersede its citizens. But as long as we the people tolerate leadership immorality and elect corrupt politicians, we cannot expect the heart and character of our nation to improve.

It fascinates me that American naturalization law incorporates "good moral character" as a prerequisite for citizenship but no such legal standard is expected of those who govern our citizens. In a post-Clinton era, government trysts seem to be the rule more than the exception. Immorality is not only tolerated but also expected among public servants now. Have we at last severed or totally compartmentalized their personal and political lives so that never the twine should meet?

Enduring public humiliation is not the only price a political leader should pay for improprieties; I think they should be disciplined and suspended, if not disposed from public service. The consequence of corruption also should be increased restrictions, if not a banning from certain areas of future public service. If one cannot properly handle his private affairs, can we truly expect him to handle political ones? If politicians can't rightly steward the duties and offices granted to them, then they should be removed and kept from the public trust. As Christians, we should be abundant in forgiveness; but as Americans too, we should be diligent in protecting political trusts from those who do or might abuse them.

To help restore national civility and decency is just one of many reasons I wrote my new book, "Black Belt Patriotism," which will be released Sept. 7 and is available at Amazon.com for pre-order. During the next few weeks, I'll give a few sneak peeks at its contents in my column.

With the Edwards affair and political integrity again hot in the news, here is just a taste of what I say in the section "The basis for morality and civility":

"Whatever happened to decency, respect, and fair play? Remember when a handshake was the only contract that was needed in negotiations? Whatever happened to the days when fourteen-year-olds (like the young George Washington) set themselves to learn and write out freehand by their own volition the 110 Rules of Civility & Decent Behavior in Company and Conversation (a book written by Jesuits for the instruction of young gentlemen)?

"Good morals precede good laws, which is why government isn't much help. Unless the people and their legislators are grounded in morality, the best of laws will be broken and the worst of laws will be made, legalizing immorality. We can't look to government to improve decency, civility, and morality. For that we need to look to another source.

"John Adams put it well when he said: 'We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.' …

"Our Founders had a better answer than government or even education. God is the answer. God is the moral compass of America. Or He should be, if we ever want to restore morality in our homes and civility to our land. Our Founders believed morals flowed from one's accountability to God, and that, without God, immoral anarchy would result."

raise the bar
The DEMs often justify their infidelities by saying they don't preach moral standards, so they are not hypocrits. Right up until they are caught and then lie about it. Then they have no place to hide. I agree with M. Norris that we should hold our leaders to a higher standard.

John Edwards has been hoisted by his own petard. We should all leave him to his well earned obscurity.

Personal morality influences leadership
Chuck is courageous and "spot on." The highest standards should be expected of our leaders. Raise the bar. If the expectations are not challenging where's the grit? The nation requires it. Let's push for the discussion of the "nature of leadership" and the definition of the ideal citizen. Then, through education in all its manifestations...home, school and institutions let's work toward those ideals. Our people are basically good and noble.

Great piece Chuck!
Excellent article Chuck. You are right on. For some reason, to a lot of Americans, an elected official's infidelity doesn't phase. In Edwards' situation, his infidelity showed that: (1) he cannot be trusted to keep his promises; (2) he is a liar; (3) he threw his friend Andrew Young under the bus to take the fall for him; and (4) he is a hypocrite, specially after making "character" part of his campaign standard.

I can answer Norris' first two questions
Do we care?
Answer: No.

Do we think it matters?
Answer: If "it" = John Edwards, then no, "it" does not matter.

John Edwards never did matter.

Morality for All
I'd assume all this also applies to John McCain's affair with Cindy Lou Hensley, consumated when McCain found that his wife of 15 years had been injured in a bad automobile accident while he was in Vietnam, was on crutches, fatter, and four inches shorter.

It's interesting that McCain actually took out a marriage license for Cindy before his first marriage ended.

Double standard
I agree with Bob, McCain not only had affairs but his money and political start came as part of the package.

A politician to forget
I am embarrassed and ashamed of John Edwards for his adultery and lies. Our great country is in a moral decline as none could ever have imagined. Have we come so far from the days of the Gary Hart and President Clinton scandals that we now just shake our heads and say "oh well, boys will be boys". Does any one even remember Chappaquiddick? How many times has that politician been re-elected since that incident? How can we ever hope to raise up children with good moral and work ethics when all they see and hear is this type of behavior being engaged in by our respected???? elected politicians?
May God help us.

RE: An Affair to Remember
Very good article Chuck!

A response to your questions in brief fashion:

Do we care? NO - John Edwards is a small change Dem waffling into obscurity

Do we think it matters? NO - John Edwards is a small change Dem waffling into obscurity

There are many of them (DemoRATs) some of us utterly despise, he's small change, wasn't even in the top 30 of my list.

However... for an elected office, MORALITY DOES MATTER, along with good logic, good judgment, honesty, and a few other special factors DEMs have shown they know nothing about!

Unfortunately, we have many elected officials doing nothing but pilfering said office.

Its my opinion we have many voting Americans not intelligent enough to vote, won't read through, and challenge, issues when needed, and elect someone to office on sentiment, popularity, or something similar.

If I had my way, potential voters would have to at least pass an IQ test before being eligible to vote! (prior to each election!)

Oops...
...a "serious error in judgment," Says Edwards.

What was? Lying his face off, or sticking his 'doodly' where he shouldn't have?

Another two-faced politician/preacher/priest... Yawn!

Chuck
"The DEMs often justify their infidelities by saying they don't preach moral standards, so they are not hypocrits."

I actually heard some lib-tard caller take this view on Mark Levine's radio show tonight. Mark, of course, disposed of the caller as an amoral fool.

But think of what he was defending: Lying, moral posturing, obfuscation, etc. is OK so long as one isn't caught - and he wouldn't have been if it were not for the independent and industrious tabloid media that exposed him. It was a story the MSM knew about but conspired to obscure because of its fascist bias.

I'm not sure who looks more despicable in this affair: the philandering slug Edwards or the cockroaches that inhabit the newsrooms of the print media.

chuck
... both are culpable, the media and Edwards. The problem is that the vast majority of the American people would not act in the way that Edwards did, but at the same time too many Americans are slow to judge which is kind of a defacto approval which allows this kind of behavior to occur over and over again. We deserve better in our government, but until we stop electing the moral reprobates we will continue to send a mixed message that we do not approve, but it will not cost you your job.

Some Questions
Leaving aside the morality of Edwards' "mistake", consider some other aspects of his behavior.

He's running for the highest office in the land in a bubble. He's watched 24/7 by all the national media. He has to know that every contact with another human being during his campaign, every thing he says and does, will be recorded and/or reported upon. He also has to know that all of his personal interactions are at risk for public exposure because people will want to use their connections with him for their own fame and fortune.

Yet, he takes the plunge into something that will ruin his career and his marriage. What's that say about his judgement?

He took advantage of his wife's terminal illness and thrust her out in front of him for sympathy votes. She was forced, or otherwise motivated, to be used is this way while she was coping with the demands of surviving. And how did he reward her? He betrayed her in the worst way, and now in full view of the public.

What's that say about how he would regard us if we made him the president?

After a career of stealing others' wealth in court, he clear cuts a secluded hideaway mountaintop in North Carolina, builds a 28,000 ft. luxury home with tennis court and swmimming pool, then stands before us and bemoans the 2 Americas and that he's one of the little people. He joins another rich elite, Al Gore, by telling us we are sinning against the planet because we want to drive to work and live in comfortable 1000 ft apartments or 1500 ft. homes in crowded suburban subdivisions.

How hypocritical is that? What's that say about those who support him?

Another "Bull's Eye" Chuck!
Is it any wonder why our country is where it is when we have substituted morality with moral relativism? This fact is evident at every turn and is supremely illustrated with Edwards, Clinton, Kennedy (Teddy), etc. We no longer "sin" we simply make mistakes or err in judgment. We should be holding our elected officials (President, Judges, Mayors etc.)to a high moral standard. We do in fact judge people and we are called to do so. We are even shown how to judge, "remove the log from your own eye before you remove the speck/splinter in your neighbor's/brother's eye. None of us are without sin and therefore what happened in the past should stay there. We should be forgiving enough to concede past sins have been reconciled between God and sinner. However, just action should be taken if such transgressions take place while holding office or political/official position. Will we ever hold them or ourselves to this high standard? Probably not. Certainly not if we continue to let the cancer of moral relativism spread further into the fabric of this country.

My theory
is that it is not his baby -- which is why the girl will not take a paternity test, because then the blackmail payments would end. Also she is convinced that somehow she will force Edwards to marry her once his wife is conveniently dead.

However, it is clear that Edwards belives there is at least a fighting chance that it is his baby, or the Danegeld would never have been paid.

As for his morality, well, he is an ambulance chaser who is well known as an apparathik and a fraud. Why would anybody be surprised that yet another man obsessed by E/D commercials and the decline of his masculinity due to Feminists etc. would be caught by a bimbo eruption?

I agree that as Christians we should pray for redemption. But nobody can be redeemed if he continues on the wrong road and shows only remorse that he was caught.

We're walking in circles
Terry said:
Have we come so far from the days of the Gary Hart and President Clinton scandals that we now just shake our heads and say "oh well, boys will be boys".

We haven't come anywhere because that's what the media and apparently, according to polls, most Americans said about Clinton. I was outraged that he could disprespect the office of the President in such a way. That Hillary would put up with his serial philandering to further her own political goals makes her unworthy of an ounce of respect. Edwards also shows that he gives not one iota of care to anyone but himself. America is doomed if we keep choosing such people as leaders.

What if he hadn't been caught?
What if he had actually made it to the White House? Clinton II, that's what.

Lying liar, telling more lies even as this unfolds. And, NO -- the press STILL is not giving him ONE-TENTH the misery that would be applied if this was Romney or Huckabee.

Anybody think for one instant that the baby is NOT his?? Must believe in fairy tales then.

No, JOHN EDWARDS DOES NOT MATTER. But, I can't wait for this to completely unfold. (Great entertainment.) Glad the dimwits had the smarts to banish him from the convention in Denver.

(Which, by the way, is going to offer quite some entertainment for folks like me -- watching the Hillary folks ACT UP!!!!)

I agree
Chuck makes a good point---he is a much better adulterer than Edwards. I'm glad pride isn't a sin, too . . . oops, it is. I'm sure it will all be explained in the book that is being plugged in the last paragraph. Patriotism with a "beat them into submission" theme---the book is already on the bestseller list in Burma...sorry, "Myanmar."

God is so cruel---He should have followed Chuck into a hotel bathroom and splashed his indiscretions all over the front page followed by the drumbeat of "holier-than-thou" columnists. Then the world could have really benefitted from Chuck's unique sin and redemption, unlike how Edwards has not confessed in the right way to Chuck and the legions of condemnation. When will the Dems learn they cannot be forgiven like Republicans?

The Mt. Everest of hypocrisy
When they impeached President Clinton, they had to go WAY deep in the Republican leadership to find a Speaker of the House who had not had an affair. You Republicans are the paragons of hypocrites.

lies are easy
If a man can lie to his own family, the people he should be closest to,how easy will it be for him to lie to us strangers?I feel sorry for a soul so lost."a fool says in his heart there is no God"

Empathy
As much as I find Mr. Edwards behavior tawdry, I find that I am more empathetic than I was with Mr. Clinton. I have learned that I am no better than Mr. Edwards lacking only the opportunity to fail. Does that mean I think he should not face the consequences? Not by any means. In life as in physics Newton's laws apply. For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

So Dems can't be forgiven like Repubs?
Well, it helps a lot if, while you're "confessing," you aren't continuing to LIE.

Oh yeah, and that confession needs to happen when you're confronted with the charge, not months later when you find you can no longer evade the truth. "I did not have sex with -- that woman - Ms. Lewinski. [wag finger]"

99% of the truth
I just read a news article that reported Edwards has said he gave "99% of the truth."

Now THERE's a guy I want in office.

Sheesh.

DARWINISM & ATHEISM: UNSCIENTIFIC & MYTH
MORE and More Atheists are coming up of their foolishness!

Just in ... another MAJOR scientist now RENOUNCES his ATHEISM. On the Right-hand side panel under under "In The News" section of the site below: He now declares that he has discovered God!

http://www.evolutionfacts.blogspot.com/#facts_about_evoluti on

Bite Back
Delicious Irony: A woman, Hillary Clinton, who never wanted to admit her husband was a serial adulterer, has her campaign for the presidential nomination effectively sabotaged by another adulterer whose primary votes, if he had been outed at the time, would almost certainly have gone to her, probably giving her the nomination over Obama. Poetic justice.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth Edwards played the same role, a conscious enabler of her husband's secretive infidelity, as did Hillary during Bill's excellent adventures.

Whatever happened to the feminists who didn't need any man?

Media Bias
If this was a conservative pundit he would have been destroyed by the media. The media did not require Bill Clinton to account for any alleged misbehavior. IN fact they actively defended him. Ted Kennedy killed a young lady in a drunk driving accident and fled the scene. He never answered for that at all. Bill Clinton was the only president that was accused of rape and sexual battery for which he did not answer. I recall a good number of democrats claiming that character is overrated and does not count.

"Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching."

Don't care, he's history
Personally, I no longer care about little Johnny and his lies. And I no longer care about Elizabeth. Both seem to be master manipulators, only interested in their hoped for place in history.
One question I have. Johnny tells us he can't be the daddy. The timing isn't right. By telling us this, it seems he is also telling us he engaged in unprotected sex with Ms. Hunter? We also have another who admits to be the father. Another "doodle" engaging in unprotected sex. How many others in the Edwards camp were involved in this free-for-all with this seemingly promiscuous women?
Now the real question. Have the Edwards, both Johhny and especially Elizabeth, been tested
for STDs? If I was Elizabeth, I'd want to know my possible exposure.
Nice work Rielle. You hit paydirt. And I'm sure many feel this ambulance chaser got his just reward. Have fun explaining all this to your "love" child.

John Edwards
He is a lawyer and politician. H is not supposed to be truthfull.

TOO Much, TOO Often
As more and more "trusted" represenitives are found to follow little or no moral standards in their personal lives; the question must be asked WHY? Has a slow decline in Americas morals become so prevalant that we just dismiss it as "just another one caught"; by the way, that is the only time they admit to their lapse in moral judgement.
Do we as Americans realize that we condone their behavior when we just dismiss their actions? I was always taught that "actions speak louder than words" and underline the true fiber of a person. Or do we Americans just dont care as long as our ears are tickled by what we hear that makes everything justifiable?
The steady decline of American culture continues with just such action and justifications. Watch it, the bottom is rushing up to hit us straight in the face.

It is a reflection of the person
You nailed it in the 5th paragraph of your article, Mr. Norris. And Carol: I agree with your 1:13 a.m. post 100%

Leadership is all about judgment and good decision-making. If a man or woman uses such poor judgment that he/she would risk his/her spouse, family, and/or career for one or a few rolls in the hay, they that person is not a leader and doesn't deserve our trust in their leadership ability.

Although the statement applies regardless of whether the victim spouse is ill, the fact that Edwards cheated on his cancer stricken wife makes it even worse in my eyes. When his wife and children need him most, where the heck is he? If you will do that to someone you "love" what kind of decisions will you make when it comes to the American people, the overwhelming majority of whom you will never even meet?

Can a person seek redemption and forgiveness? Absolutely. But this isn't over for Edwards nor should it be until he owns it.

What’s the big deal?
It’s only about sex, right?

The Democratic party is responsible for the sex revolution and the abolition of laws against abortion, adultery, fornication, sodomy, and any other perversion you can think of. It has promoted distribution of condoms in K-12, special rights for homosexuals, K-12 sex education, K-12 indoctrination into homosexuality, female masturbation workshops in universities, same-sex "marriage", and a general glorification of debauchery. It has even ignored pedophilia. Their belief in moral equivalence and moral relativism and their lack of moral clarity have led to a general tolerance of evil. I would have a lot more respect for them if, when one of them is caught having an affair, they would just say they don’t think there is any more wrong with it than choosing Coke over Pepsi.

Because of the above, Edwards' wife, being the good Democrat that she probably is, should have no hurt feelings at all and come right out and say so.

Priorities
But Chuck don't you know "It's the economy stupid"? We aren't supposed to care about infidelity as long as the politician involved does a good job in office and keeps our economy humming along. Thank you Bill Clinton for your legacy. Now every sleazy politician thinks he/she can get away with anything since he got away with it. I remember when the Monica Lewinsky scandal hit. I have 3 children, a boy and two girls. Their ages at the time were 9, 8. and 7 respectively. I remember how awkward it was trying to explain to them what the president did that was wrong after they first saw it on the news and heard about it at school. I basically told them that Clinton did a bad thing by not being faithful to his wife. They were just barely old enough to understand what was going on. But I shouldn't have had to explain anything if Clinton had done right and remained faithful to begin with. Our children are growing up too fast and losing their innocence too early already. Character does matter folks. The wind sowed to in the 60's and 70's has already reaped its whirlwind. I have faith that most Americans are decent moral people. But it is long past time for us to start fighting to get our country back. I pray it is not too late already.

Welcome Chuck Norris
By the way a belated welcome to Townhall, Chuck. Loved Walker Texas Ranger and I have seen much of your past work in movies and on television. Great to have you on the side of the conservatives when so much of the entertainment industry is dominated by liberalism these days. Great column. Keep up the good writing and I look forward to your book.

Right message, wrong spokesperson
I agree with what he wrote but don't think Norris is the right person to be saying it.

Not only does he have his own past, but he spent the entire spring campaigning for a person who was named one of the most corrupt politicians in America.

character
This was a splended article, Chuck. As I read past the headline, I was half expecting a kind of 'what goes on in their private lives shouldn't matter' kind of rationalization. The points you hit on were exactly right. Especially the quote from John Adams. Too few observers make the connection to the founders, but it was they who warned us that the corollary to freedom is responsibility. Tragically, "character" has lost relevance on all levels of American life and on both sides of the political isle. We are in greater danger than we know.

All This Gleeful Outrage...
... about Edwards' adultery but apparently the same rules don't apply to John McCain. I especially enjoy the posts accusing the democrats of hypocrisy, talking about Clinton, Hart, and Kennedy and how we must hold our elected officials to a higher standard.

So does that also apply to McCain? Let's have an up or down, yes or no vote. Just add either "Yes, McCain too" or "No, it's OK for McCain" at the end of your comments below.

Liberal Training,
To Paraphrase a line from Eric Segal's LOVE STORY, " Being a Democrat means never having to say your sorry". From the days of Havelock Ellis, Margaret Sanger, Madame Blatavsky and other early progressive socialist until today, the liberals have exchanged the rampant, promiscuous use of the libido for liberty. From the atheist days of the Jacobin French Revolution, through the 1840's Marxist hatred of Christianity, morality has been decried as a bourgeois enslavement of man. Atheist, Sybaritic Socialism, has always been advocated by such Democratic Party supporters as the ACLU, The hedonist of Hollywood, SIECUS et al. Sex Drugs and Rock n Roll has always been the goal and agenda of the Democrats, liberals and progressives. The progressives have detested and renounced bourgeois, middle-class Christianity and its morality. In short, shame and sin is the psychological dysfunction of that "opiate of the people". Shame and sin are only political dialectic tools to be used to renounce Republicans and Conservatives. Think of the Party of Barney Frank, Ted Kennedy and Bill Clinton. Democrats will alway exonerate, excuse and re-elect their fellow licentious liberals. Liberals are Nietzsche's Ubermensch, The Supermen (and women) beyond good and evil. John Edwards was merely following his fellow Fabian Socialist, Aldous Huxley< in the liberal idea of a "BRAVE NEW WORLD". No apologies needed, John Edwards' actions are in accord with liberal refutation of Christian, Jewish or Muslim morality. Sin and shame are only for Christians and Conservatives. Mike Guy

I find it phenominal
that there are those that are excusing this behavior. Not only by Edwards but the MEDIA!!!!

This man was a whisper away from the VP slot in 2004, and once again in Obama's campaign. That puts him a whisker away from the POTUS, since VP's stand the single best opportunity to get the top slot.

No wonder government is so dysfunctional when the electorate is so indifferent.

As to the Dems they don't espouse morality? Really? What was all the months of Pelosi, Reid, and Democrats in general, claiming corruption and draining the swamp then? That is how they got elected in 2006 people! If you don't think Edwards has influence within the Democratic party I have a bridge to sell you.

Anyone with this kind of behavior and judgment, regardless of what letter they have behind their name, should get the boot. Also I didn't ever notice in one place in this article Chuck claiming only Democrats get the boot.

Bob Munck
Get your facts straight!

For one John McCain's former wife had her accident when he was being imprisoned by the VC!

Adultry
At least McCain MARRIED the "Other Woman" and has remained married to her ever since. Even his first wife has stated that she has no ill feelings toward John and that she and Cindy are freinds.

Does Edwierds Matter?
Answer: No.
So he's a schmuck and a professional liar (lawyer) - to quote the scorpion "You knew that when you started carrying me (the scorpion and the frog)" To a lawyer, the only "truth" is what gets them what they want, when they want; and the fools who vote for them are like the cattle going quietly to the slaughterhouse. The profession is a cesspit, and until we cease treating the law profession like a profession and more like the usually criminal activity it is, we will get more of the same.

Oh, and by the way, libtards - typically (not always, but far more than on the left) a criminal or immoral action (read: Cunningham, Stevens) results in a Conservative (or conservative wannabe) being ousted, ostracised, and generally shunned. With the left, it's a resume builder and path to leadership (read: Kennedy, cold-cash Jefferson, Frank, Byrd, Clintoon, the impeached judge from florida, etc...).

Lolo1 11:43 AM EST
"Anyone with this kind of behavior and judgment, regardless of what letter they have behind their name, should get the boot."

So you're a "Yes, McCain too" vote?

"John McCain's former wife had her accident when he was being imprisoned by the VC!"

I never said otherwise. Is that a legitimate excuse? What other things make adultery acceptable to you? Being a republican?

A difference of degree
This is for you, Bob Munck.

No, it is not OK with me that McCain had an affair too.

But there are differences. The first is that McCain's wife is believed (or known) to have cheated on McCain as well. In other words McCain's adultery, while unacceptable, was obviously part of a disintegrating marriage. Edwards on the other hand paraded his cancer-stricken wife as a noble supporter of his campaign and (cynically) used the resulting sympathy to resurrect a dead candidacy, if only shortly.

The second difference is in the way the lying left media 'covers' such stories. If it's Rush Limbaugh, Bill Bennett, Mark Foley, Larry Craig, or ohn McCain these putrid hypocrites are all over it like stinkflies. But if it's Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Al Gore Jr., Al Gore III, Barney Frank, William Jefferson, Diane Feinstein, Gerry Studds, Jesse Jackson, or John Edwards they downplay it, sit on it, bury it, and/or attempt to excuse it by saying "It's their private life" or they're trying to invoke a "higher journalistic standard".

This last is the biggest crock of them all. If they want to upgrade their standards they could start by eliminating all expressions of their blatant partisanship from both their reporting and their decisions of what to cover.

Edwards' cynical hypocrisy apparently knows no bounds. This is the famously pro-abortion former Senator who enriched himself as a trial lawyer by fraudulently pretending to "channel" the consciousness of an unborn child during birth in front of a jury. Apparently the logical conflict between claiming an unborn child is not a human until after birth and presuming that same child can feel pain and/or fear takes a back seat to Edwards' pending contingency fee.

Ironically, you have stumbled into a analagous microcosm of this whole election. Do we want an unacceptably flawed Republican (McCain) or an even more unacceptably flawed Democrat (Obama)?

Joesolis 11:46 AM EST
"At least McCain MARRIED the "Other Woman" and has remained married to her ever since."

If Edwards now divorces his wife and marries Hunter, will he be an acceptable candidate for president? Does he need to stay faithful to her, or is that also negotiable?

I'd say you're a "No, it's OK for McCain" vote.

How we got here......
"Good morals precede good laws, which is why government isn't much help. Unless the people and their legislators are grounded in morality, the best of laws will be broken and the worst of laws will be made, legalizing immorality."

I'd say that pretty much sums up what's wrong with our country (government) now.

Sil

Lolo
Not the phrasing used by The Breck Girl, a "mistake" or a "serious error in judgment." Reminds of the joke about The Mafia Hitman on trial. The murder he committed was “a mistake” and stabbing the victim 27 times was “a serious error in judgment”.

wiseone 11:53 AM EST
"But there are differences. The first is that McCain's wife is believed (or known) to have cheated on McCain as well."

Cite needed.

Did this happen during the six months she spent in the hospital after her accident? Note that she refused to allow word of it get to McCain in the Vietnam prison camp. Or was it during the period after he returned and became famous for his pursuit of bimbos?

"In other words McCain's adultery, while unacceptable, was obviously part of a disintegrating marriage."

He filed for divorce, gave up both their houses, agreed to $6K per month (current dollars, on a Navy captain's salary), and promised to pay her medical bills for further treatment she was expected to need. He kept an old car and his personal belongings. Talk about your No Fault divorce.

"The second difference is in the way the lying left media 'covers' such stories."

Yeah, they've sure hushed up Edwards. It's getting more air time than the Olympics and the Russian invasion.

How exactly does this make a difference to the relative morality of McCain and Edwards? Is it part of IOKIYAR?

"Ironically, you have stumbled into a analagous microcosm of this whole election. Do we want an unacceptably flawed Republican (McCain) or an even more unacceptably flawed Democrat (Obama)?"

SO it's OK to throw away any moral sense for a Higher Cause?

How about that long period when McCain was only a candidate, with other options available? Morality didn't matter much then either?

Bob Munck
First off you leaped from A to C and 2+2 does not equal five.

I have not made a decision as to how I am going to vote so it has nothing to do with this column. Furthermore two wrongs do not make a right. Take the plank out of your eye and clean up your own backyard before you criticize mine.

You have been posting lies about McCain and quite a few threads for quite awhile. Re-read what you wrote because it does imply that McCain was fooling around while his wife was in the hospital from a car accident.

Last, at least with McCain, I can understand at least how his marriage disintegrated since my father was also a POW. That kind of long separation takes a tole on people and leaves them little energy for the continued maintenance of a marital relationship. My parents told us children repeatedly that the most difficult thing they ever had to do was put their marriage back together when Dad finally came home. Add to that the scars from imprisonment and trying to get to know your kids, especially me, who as the youngest never knew him in the first place. He was nothing more than a stranger to me, and a scary one at that.

So what's John Edwards excuse?

You drag out old information about McCain, over thirty years at that, but never once have I ever seen you post anything about little Teddy Kennedy who has a long history of misbehavior including murder. So your opinion about McCain is moot at best.

wiseone
Nuances are not Bob's strong suit and would only apply to the left at any rate.

Hey Chuck!
No mention of McCains affair? LMAO!

Lolo1 12:29 PM EST
"Take the plank out of your eye and clean up your own backyard before you criticize mine."

But apparently that same advice does not apply to you or the other McCain apologists commenting here.

"Re-read what you wrote because it does imply that McCain was fooling around while his wife was in the hospital from a car accident."

What I wrote was "... consumated when McCain found that his wife of 15 years had been injured in a bad automobile accident while he was in Vietnam ..." Do you take that as implying that he had an affair while in a Vietnam prison camp?

"Last, at least with McCain, I can understand at least how his marriage disintegrated since my father was also a POW."

So it's "Until Death do us part, but prisoner-of-war camps are also an acceptable reason?"

"So what's John Edwards excuse?"

Who decides which excuses are sufficient?

"You drag out old information about McCain"

That makes a difference? "When he was young and foolish" and 44 years old.

"but never once have I ever seen you post anything about little Teddy Kennedy who has a long history of misbehavior including murder."

How exactly does that make it OK for McCain to have an affair, but not Edwards?

You guys just dig yourselves in deeper with every excuse you make. Let's face it, it's entirely about "It's OK If You're A Republican."

Bob Munck
Like I said nuances are not your strong suit.

Reality is I never said it was okay but I did say at least I understood it. I also said I didn't know whether I would vote for McCain.

However if you are going to make divorce the barometer remember that also applies to Democrats.

Marriage
I think this topic is way too ignorant. How many of us can admit that marriage is nothing more than a business agreement. If was all about love, wouldn't the women who are married to these very wealthy men simply kick him out? It's all about money, eh? I feel sorry for no one and John Edwards shouldn't be put out to dry just because he needed some sex. For God's sake,,,,how many people cheat just because they need an orgasm? Get real, eh? This Rielle needs to be held accountable for not using birth control. I am assuming she held Edwards hostage for the life long cash flow she will receive.

Morals are Taboo
It has become politically incorrect to discuss things like morals. The very word makes some uncomfortable, I guess, because it implies that there should be a governor on one's behavior and that some actions are simply degenerate, inappropriate, unacceptable, repulsive, or repugnant. Human nature being what it is, some people will always misbehave, especially those who feel entitled to bad conduct by virtue of status or station, such as public office holders. The tragedy occurs not when the behaviors occur but when the public tolerates, condones, or tries to justify them. The bar has been lowered on the conduct of politicians to the extent that it is subterranean; there are absolutely no standards of decency applied to them. The responsibility for this decline in civility lies with the American people who form the electorate. What does it say about a general population that supports and defends a lying, immoral leader?

It would appear that Edwards is a liar..
...and a cheat and would do anything to hide his past and present indiscretions. He might even pay off his mistress and might even set up someone else to pretend he was the father of Ms. Reill's baby. Now what if he used campaign funds to administer his machinations? Might that actually be illegal? The long arm of the law needs to get engaged and track down the past of this fellow.

Lolo1 1:44 PM EST
"Like I said nuances are not your strong suit."

Ah, there are NUANCES to cheating on your wife? Like what? Does it make a difference if your wife is just badly crippled, rather than having a fatal disease? That seems like an extremely thin line to draw. How about if the co-respondent is extremely wealthy? That's a pretty good nuance.

Or is the nuance entirely the difference between "(D)" and "(R)?"

"I also said I didn't know whether I would vote for McCain."

Yeah, but nobody believes that.

"However if you are going to make divorce the barometer remember that also applies to Democrats."

Divorce? Edwards hasn't demanded a divorce. Neither did Clinton, Kennedy, Hart, or Frank. Remember, you had the first divorced president and right-wingers divorce at a significantly higher rate than liberals.

Errata
The editor missed the last sentence in the 6th paragraph: "Have we at last severed or totally compartmentalized their personal and political lives so that never the twine should meet?" Twine should be twain.

"Have we at last severed or totally compartmentalized their personal and political lives so that never the twain should meet? "

Much ado...
...about old news. Edwards' political career is history anyway, so what difference does this make? And why should we be surprised: (1) That the press covered for him last fall; (2) That a trial lawyer/politician is a cheating liar; (3)That he's still equivocating?

It's all just a titillating distraction from the real issues at hand. Probably just another example of someone being thrown under the bus for B.O.'s benefit. Bait, perhaps - some excuse to try to make an issue of McCain's past indiscretions?

The problem
The problem with all this hype around John Edwards is that it shouldn't be surprising to anyone for any reason. He's a politician, which means he's in a position of power and influence (even if he's politically jobless right now). People in positions of power tend to be corrupted by that power (Whether it is real power like being the President, or influential power like being an advisor to a major politician or being a member of the press who can influence a large number of people). They tend to believe that they can lie, cheat, steal, mislead, or even mistreat the masses and no harm should come to them. That's what makes term limits so important. It's not simply to bring fresh blood into the halls of Government, because that fresh blood will soon be corrupted as well. It's to get the corrupt ones out of office and give some new people a chance.

What Edwards did
Was bad and reflects on the type of person let alone leader he is. I honestly believe what bubba did was even worse. The office is our symbol of a great country and for Bubba to get a b.j. in the office is a slap in the face to all of us in this country or should be.

Bob Munck
Idiot the nuances are the circumstances.

What a waste of time you are but have a nice evening anyway.

There is a big difference
in having an affair 20 yrs ago and having one last week. As usual, when liberals get caught in wrongdoing, they point the finger at somebody else. Comprendo Bob?

Of Course We Care
We don't want this guy anywhere near a court or AG office or any gov. post. His trial lawyer drawbacks were alot now this. Can you imagine how those trial lawyer entitlements would get supported by Edwards. Or the destruction of marriage.

Is he still headlining the convention? Oh, it's the other one. Nevermind.

I Agree With Chuck
There should be more severe punishments handed out for politicians. Also they should be removed and banished from public service for oath of office violations.

Lawyers who are dis-barred in a state should be dis barred from all fifty states. If not fit for, not fit for any. Period.

Also added to the list for heavy harsh punishment should be judges who ignore law and try legislating from the bench. Someone like Bloomberg's lawyer who's letting Bloomberg's gestapo squads survielle and tap peoples phones illegally. Or the ninth circuit.

HELP me out here! I just heard Hannity

say that he'd heard the "rumor" today that Edwards was still being vetting and was STILL under consideration for VP.

Axelrod... said that Edwards WAS STILL being vetted and STILL under CONSIDERATION.

Please, someone tell me this is just a rumor or a joke!!

PLEASE!

Anne
That makes perfect sense as they are liberals.
If he doesn't get another thirty years out of them I don't know who can.

My opinion he should be kicked to the curb. Didn't he get un- invited to speak at their convention?

Eliminate Lies & Save $$$$
If a lie is rationalized as a mistake by the privileged then it should apply to everyone. Why bother to spend our tax dollars for defendants who are in jail for perjury? After all, it costs taxpayers about $24,000 per prisoner per year for their stay in "lock up hotel" for a non-violent crims. We should set everyone free and each of them should file an appeal based on the fact that they didn't understand the meaning of a "lie" and request a motion to overturn their perjury cases based on new information that they have recently discovered that they didn't "lie" but that they made a "mistake" and didn't understand the difference at the time of trial now that our country allows some to lie and others to make a "mistake" and move on without punishment.

Absolutely Chuck!
How did the good guys get a candidate who did pretty much the same thing to his first wife years ago? After campaign finance reform, immigration and now this: why didn't Guliani or Romney bring this up in the primary?

Moral reaction
Does the moral behavior of governmental leaders really effect others under their rule? Yes, and one big example is when Clinton was caught lying about Monica- it was during that same time that the school shootings erupted. I think it caused a disruption in morals that escalated to the most vunerable- our youth- they can be the most impressionable in the country and the ones more willing to "act out" from their emotional influences.

How about lying our entire country...
...Into war? Where's the righteous indignation about that?
The evidence piles higher and higher that our current administration lied about the intelligence that they used to get all of us behind attacking Iraq.
Let's talk about that.
Edwards did exactly the same thing that Rudy and Newt did. I appreciate that Chuck doesn't mention them by name but he didn't leave Republicans out of his accusations either. Thank you for that.

But let's talk about serious things. Rudy, Newt, Bill and John Edwards will have to sin 24 hours a day 7 days a week for years and years before what they have done rises to the same level of Wolfowitz, Pearl, Rumsfeld, Cheney and between naps... George W. Bush.

Where's the outrage for the innocent dead? The soldiers who were just doing their duty? Where's the outrage for our lost stature in the world at a time when we really need some stature?

For those of you so inclined: Please pray that justice will be done in our lifetimes to make those who made up the war pay for their crimes, and not just their sins.

Dear Wes,
Last month the U.S. military delivered (in secret for obvious reasons) 550 metric TONS of yellow cake Uranium found in IRAQ to Canada. Why Canada? Because that is the only country that has the storage capacity for this much DOUBLE U EMMM DEEE and they can trusted (to an extent). Why wasn't this advertised? Because there are some very mean people out there that would love to get their grubby little paws on this stuff to reak havoc on INFIDELS lie you and me and keeping this information closesly guarded is in the best interest of this country in keeping it's citizens safe. I'll say it again so you understand. FIVE HUNDRED AND FIFTY METRIC TONS (with a T) of yellow cake Uranium. Also known as WMD. Look it up.

wes
Do I need to drag out the countless quotes from our liberal friends about Iraq? Many of those coming before 2000 even. Get a grip, your not making any sense haha.

Edwards is NOT history!
To all those that think this is nothing because Edwards is history, don't have a clue as to the ability of the Demoncraps to idolize their miscreants. He is young, charismatic, has the breck girl hair, and that is all he needs to be one of the Demoncraps top dogs. This will have blown over by 2012 and he will be Hitlary's running mate then. If you think that character or substance matter to the Demoncraps, just look at their nominee!

n2win, sorry but your reply to Wes will
not change his BDS mind one bit. Facts are not part of his equation and simply do not matter in that they were presented by a conservative, and they don't support his derranged conclusions.

Wes! Response please!
Dying to hear what you have to say about the yellowcake uranium from IRAQ. Here's betting you either don't respond (ignoring facts does not make them go away!), or respond with an an assertion that it's some kind of lie.

C'mon, Wes! Make your liberal cohorts proud!

To Cretin from NY
" Dying to hear what you have to say about the yellowcake uranium from IRAQ."

Spouting yellow cake uranium as a WMD is a tantamount to considering a piece of raw Aluminum the next futuristic fighter jet that travels close to the speed of light. The amount of ignorance being spewed on this thread is beyond any rational response.

Come back when you got your driving license and job first.

John Edwards 'mistake'...and C. Norris'
I agree wholeheartedly with Chuck Norris' article on John Edwards...this is what happens when there are no moral absolutes, i.e. the Bible, the Ten Commandments, etc. We are fast becomming a lawless society and we are just 'reaping the consequences' of our actions and, inactions, as in the Silent Majority. Chuck has said it all pretty well, so there is my take on it.

Don't forget these affairs too
I understand affairs you specifically point out are selectively focused on Democrats Chuck, but remember:

Newt Gingrich
Rudy Guliani
Some guy named John McCain
David Paterson
Henry Hyde
David Vitter
Don Sherwood
Mark Foley (tried to with interns, male at that)

Etc,etc.

I guess neither party owns a monopoly on moral values in this country...

I love the title of the column
But let's get over it as a political issue.
He is not on the ticket.

I looked up statistics for those who commit
adultery. I was surprised to find that the
current levels are stated to be low in comparison to previous decades. I think there are two reasons for this. One, fewer people are married, and since adultery requires at least one person to be married, it would make sense that the rate would go down.

The second is that we are a far fatter nation
now. So, far fewer people can attract the
opposite sex to take on the risk of adultery
and probably the fatter you are the less
energy you have for it.

Another aside - imagine where this conversation
would go if McCain chose Mormon Mitt Romney for his running mate. I can't believe he would be
that dumb, but you never know.

Michael, the point is that those you
listed got raked through the mud thoroughly by the MSM, yet Edwards, Clinton, ETAL get a pass!

The only reason that they covered Gary Hart was that he dared them to catch him cheating.

Dutch
Nothing like missing the WHOLE point, eh Dutch?
Chuck's whole point is that PERSONAL immorality invariably leads to Public Political Immorality and BAD GOVERNMENT.
This was GOING ON when Mr. Ed WAS a LEADING Candidate for POTUS! It was being COVERED UP when he was a leading Candidate for VEEP! It was COVERED UP by his wife, his campaign, the DNC, even Hussein's people BECAUSE he was a candidate for POTUS and VP. ALL of which means the IMMORALTY, the BETRAYAL, was NOT personal but a BETRAYAL of the PUBLIC TRUST, a BETRAYAL of US! Further it demonstrates conclusively yet AGAIN the absolute Moral Vacuity and Ethical Degeneracy of the Commiequeer Dumbolcrap Party and ALL their Candidates AND VOTERS!!!
EVERYBODY NEEDS to have their FACES RUBBED in this until they DO get Chuck's point!

The Big Mick

Michael
The difference is we lose respect for ours, not cover it up with more lies to foist them on the American people. Say, which ones in YOUR list did it in the Oral Orifice or were a LEADING candidate for PRez or Veep WHEN it was going on, hmmmmm? Did any of them boink the mafia bag lady IN the WH like JFK? How about leave a woman to drown like Teddy? Run a yqueer brothel out of his home like Barney Phag?
False moral equivalence further demonstrates Moral Vacuity.
I lost respect for Newt, Dumbolcraps DEMAND their leaders Impregnate the Serfs. It validates the master slave relationship and spread the elitist genes.

the big mick

wes and humbum
If you premise is Sodem WASN'T trying to get a nuke and bio and chem WMDs you're morons.
If your premise is that the world would have been better giving him 7 more years to GET them, or to continue bribing the Euros and the UN or to continue threatening his neighbors or raping and murdering his own people you're whatever is more stupid than a moron.
If you can't look at a map and see that the next logical Strategic Front in the WAR for SURVIVAL against the Sandnazis is Iraq then you are a worse than a moron in denial. If you don't understand that one goes to war BEFORE the enemy has COMPLETE CAPABILITY to ACT on their STATED INTENTIONS, and that Intelligence is THE BEST GUESS, then you are a BIGOTED worse than moron.
I would have thought even bigots and morons would think it a "Good Thing" to free millions of women from the Slavery of Shitrear Law.

The Big Mick

To small Mike
Arguing to hypothetical wouldn't get you far in life pumpkin. Learn to put together a single coherent sentence before punching your keyboard to oblivion.

Yes, sorry big micky
You changed my mind, God loves you and hates anyone who does not think like you. Thank you for showing me the light micky.

Wes
How about one that raped our military till it didn't have the strength needed to fight, nor didn't have the equipment the soldiers needed? Try the same president that got a b.j. in the White House and lied about it even though they had a dress with D.N.A. on it. He's either a liar or an exhibitionist as he said he was never alone with that woman!!

great news from mccain
mccain on tv yesterday. "russia should realize that in the 21st century one nation doew not invade another nation" great news. i waas wondereing where our army went.
