Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Bruce Lee is back with a vengeance.

My good friend, fellow sparring partner and martial arts legend has returned to the cultural scenery through the 2008-2009 openings of a 40-episode biopic miniseries, a Broadway show, a remake of "Enter the Dragon" and the creation of a theme park. And news about these events is stirring the pot of inquiry and controversy about him once again, as it was before his sudden and unfortunate death in 1973 at the young age of 32.

"The Legend of Bruce Lee," which is being filmed in China, Hong Kong and the U.S. and contains an international cast, is poised to deliver a fitting veneration to the kung fu king of screen. This television biography might contain fictionalized episodes, but it will resurrect Bruce's personhood and talents before a whole new generation. It stars Chan Kwok-kwan, who has an uncanny resemblance to Lee but whose greatest challenge remains to convince the viewing audience of his mastery of martial arts with only a dancing background.

Equally entertaining will be Warner Bros.' remake of the 1973 classic "Enter the Dragon." The new film will be titled "Awaken the Dragon." It will loosely follow the original, which tracks an FBI agent who investigates a Shaolin monk and underground kung fu fighting clubs. Still unanswered, however, is, Who will (or can) play Lee's character?

I don't imagine Bruce ever could have imagined himself on Broadway, but composer and Tony Award nominee David Yazbek is placing him front and center stage through his scores in an upcoming musical based upon Lee's life.

And in southeast China, there is even a $29 million theme park being erected in Bruce's honor, which will include a martial arts academy and a memorial hall. And just in time, with the world's spotlight on the Beijing Olympics.

With the mania over this iconoclastic giant, curiosity is once again knocking on even my doorstep. What was Bruce Lee like? How did you meet? What was it like to choreograph the fight scene in Rome with him? Did you spend much time together off-screen? Those are a small sampling of the inquiries I'm asked often, wherever I go around the world.

However, the question probably most asked of me is, Do you think you could have beaten Bruce Lee in a professional competition?

Many have opined about the answer. Some even indicted what I haven't said. For example, contrary to the Toronto Star's recent report, I have not admitted that I "would be no match for Lee in a real fight."

The truth is Lee was a formidable opponent with a chiseled physique and technique. I totally enjoyed sparring and just spending time with him. He was as charismatic and friendly in the ring and at home as he was on film. His confidence and wit were dazzling and sometimes even debilitating to others -- saying things to others, such as: "A fight is not won by one punch or kick. Either learn to endure or hire a bodyguard."

Lee was lightning fast, very agile and incredibly strong for his size. He was also a master marketer -- a fact demonstrated by his ability to talk the world karate champion at the time (me) into being defeated on-screen!

However, many today don't realize he never competed professionally. If he had, I believe he would have been a world champion. Rather, his fame was crowned with "The Green Hornet" television series. Then he was immortalized with such movies as "Enter the Dragon" and "Return of the Dragon," in which Lee and I fought in the now-famous sequence inside the Roman Colosseum.

I enjoy speaking about my friendship with Bruce. It is something about which many don't know. As I travel the world, it seems that younger people identify me merely with some of the folklore in the "Church Norris Facts" -- those hyperbolic sayings that elevate my abilities beyond my capabilities. Others view me in light of the character I played in "Walker, Texas Ranger" or in one of my 20 tough-guy films. But not everyone realizes that before my film and television career, I was the six-time world champion. From 1964 to 1968, I won many state, national and international amateur karate titles. In 1968, I fought and won the world middleweight karate championship by defeating the world's top fighters. I then held that title until 1974, when I retired undefeated.

It's strange to look back on those days. They seem so near yet so far away. It's difficult to believe that it has been 35 years since Bruce left this earth. I miss my friend. I know many of you do, too. I hope all the endeavors to memorialize his greatness are successful.

Enough stalling! As in my new fighting federation, the World Combat League -- which we are hoping will be seen in 100 countries during this second season -- there are penalties for passivity.

So, would I have beaten Bruce Lee in a real competition or not? You'll forgive me for answering with another Bruce-ism: "Showing off is the fool's idea of glory."

Write what you know, Mr. Norris

This is the kind of column I'd really like to see more often from you, Sa Bom Nim Norris.

Your insights into the special worlds of the martial arts and the entertainment industry would prove both informative and attractive to a degree your political writing efforts have not.

Speaking of the entertainment industry, could I suggest that you might address in future your thoughts on steering your way through that plenum while preserving your personal integrity?

The temptations that have crippled or destroyed so many of your acting colleagues in the movies and in television did not simply disappear during your career, and the lessons you'd learned could be quite valuable to others.

Didn't much like his support for Huckabee, but I have always liked Chuck Norris.

Republican mantra
"Showing off is the fool's idea of glory." sounds like a mantra that Republicans could live with. As I watched again my citizen association plan and execute elections during Easter week to sweep the Board of Christians I realize it is going to take a whole new attitude and approach to "win" and it has nothing to do with wasting energy.

Dear Chuck, congressman Heath Shuler (former NFL quarterback)
has authored a bill HR 4088 Save act which would be a great step forward in dealing with the 20 million illegal aliens in our country. It would start the process of attrition thru enforcement and help the illegals to migrate back to their respective countries over time. Exactly what 80% of the American people want ! Pelosi and it has been rumored McCain are making efforts to quash this bill. right now it needs about 35 signers on the discharge petition in order for this bill to be voted on by the house. We need your help. America needs your help. Please contact rep. Shuler and write about this excellent piece of proposed legislation.
McCain and Pelosi want amnesty. The American people want the illegals to go back to thier repsective countries over time ! Chuck do something for America !

Which thread?

Primus
ModMark posted his statement on the Mike Adams thread on Monday.

Just What I Needed
Chuckie, tell us -- was Bruce a Demo or Repub? And why should anyone care as to what you think about Lee? Your TV shows are putrid, and your theme that is all about fighting is a good show for kiddies. This is an all about "me" thing, similar to those articles from Jackie GINGRICH - who not only tells about her, but gives advice to people who know far more than she. She is related to Newt, the servant of the CFR.

Bruce Lee---Far Superior to Anyone
No contest. Bruce Lee would tear anyone apart in short order. He invented MMA through his study of every fighting art known to man.

Regarded as one of the strongest men on earth, pound for pound.

Fought in REAL LIFE against multiple, well-trained attackers and barely broke a sweat.

Mike Huckabee is a joke.

The difference?
Bruce Lee was a master of Kung Fu, which is a martial art, meaning war style of fighting. Chuck Norris is the master of Karate, which is a SPORT with extremely formalized rules.

People that know Karate either get their butt's kicked on the street or they are smart enough to leave that crap at the dojo because it is almost useless in a real fight.

Sorry, Chuck, tremendous respect for you (well, except your shameless attempt at expanding your business through your endorsement of Huckabee) but you and Bruce Lee were worlds apart in actual ability to fight.

Troubling development
Sorry, but I don't see the increase in the number of the young taking up various forms of "martial arts" as a positive thing.

TeeHall
You prove that even on issues that have nothing to do with politics, liberals are simply bitter and angry people. Sad.

Monster
Please take up some martial arts training if you get the opportunity. In almost all forms, the major focus is on restraint and self-control....something that would be a very "positive thing" for our current youth.

About ModMark
I agree with Curtal Friar about the plague of Christian-bashing. People think it's safe to pretend to believe that Christians are a major threat of violence, precisely because they really KNOW that Christians are NOT going to hunt them down and cut off their heads for saying so.

Speaking of nonsense, the Hong Kong cinema began making movies about "Bruce Lee was murdered" theories almost before Lee's body was cold. It was an emotional catharsis to imagine some disciple of Lee's "unmasking" and punishing the assassins.

About Mr. Norris, I don't think he could ever have beaten Bruce Lee in a real fight either. But on the other hand, to the best of my knowledge, Bruce Lee never did anything like the amount of humanitarian activity Mr. Norris has engaged in for the good of others.

Icedog, context is everything.
I expected this response. It is the first defense made when such doubts as mine are expressed. But overlooked is the context in which this "restraint" is couched.

In an increasingly insecure world it may in fact be necessary to teach our young to be able to fight with their hands and feet, but I, for one, do not view this as anything positive.

Particularly disturbing is what I see developing in the female participants of this "art form".

Chuck--
--Thanks for sharing your experiences. It was nice to read something off the well-beaten political path.

--Monster, it's quite obvious you've never participated in any form of martial arts. Your flippant remark exposes your ignorance. Had you ever, you would realize some of the best qualities a person can posess are demanded in that training.

As for comparing Chuck Norris to Bruce Lee-- it's a fool's game. We'll never know what Bruce Lee would have evolved into over a long life.

KB
Leave the childish comments to the children.

If you don't agree with Gov Huckabee's policies or positions, fine - disagree.

But I should hope you are mature enough to state your opposition without the hit and run tactics.

Gov Huckabee didn't serve as governor of Arkansas for 10-1/2 years because he was a buffoon.

Pick up 'From Hope to Higher Ground' at your local bookstore and read through the first chapter and see what Gov Huckabee did in the face of scores (over 75,000) of Katrina refugees pouring into his state. He was effective and humane and not enough has been made of his leadership during this time.

Monster
So...on the positive side, we possibly create a disciplined teen with self-control, or at worst, we end up with a delinquent teen with newfound, but misused skills. I happen to live between D.C. and Baltimore, and most of the youth "fights" around here involve a gun or a knife....a simple black eye or cracked rib would still be a major improvement.

IGoCommando
Trust me when I say that my remarks are not flippant but have been well and long considered.

Believe me, when I can not go out into the world everyday without expecting to be disrespected at least twice a day these days, if I weren't a Christian, I would be hard at work mastering To Shin Do (sp?) a particularly lethal form of martial arts.

However, in regards to "the best qualities a person can possess" I'm a firm believer in "no one pours new wine into old wineskins". (Matt. 9:17)

Any Who Speculate

Who would win between these two is foolish.

In the real world, when the kicking and screaming starts anything can happen - and usually does. Marciano would have knocked out Ali just like he did Ezzard Charles. Not because he was a better boxer - he wasn't. He would have beaten Ali because he could take a punch and had an indomitable spirit. And they didn't stop the fights at the first little drop of blood in those days. Ezzard Charles beat him mercilessly, blood everywhere, and finished the fight flat on his back - K.O.ed.

Technical ability is one thing, but an indomitable spirit is formidable.

ThunderThudd
The difference is that one fighting style is a FIGHTING STYLE and the other is a game. If Bruce Lee were forced to fight according to the rules of Karate, sure, Chuck probably would have won.

But a real fight? Please... Kung Fu was designed to destroy an enemy at war with you. Karate was designed to score points.

Nothing foolish about it. Karate is hardly a "martial" art.

Chuck, Great article!
As to Monster, his attitude is monsterous and that of a bufoon. The most important thing taught in martial arts is to avoid conflict if at all possible. As a minor student of Ki Aikido, "the friendly martial art", peace of mind and the unison of mind and body are paramount in controling one's demeanor.

It takes only a short time to learn how to kick or punch, it takes many years to learn when to.

Rich
Indeed.

Vindex
Perhaps you confuse the American shopping mall karate with the budo style, karate-do.

If a master of karate-do were to meet a master of kung fu, I would predict only that one or both of them would end up in the hospital...

Comparisons
Isn't this a bit like comparing the horses "Man 'o War", a Thoroughbred race horse and "Trigger", a T-bred/Quarter-horse mix of famous cinematic talent. Any speculative comparisons diminishes the real accomplishments of both.

Monster
Vindex is right about the styles.

I think you are wrong about learning martial arts.

I had nine years of martial arts training in karate, Hap Ki Do, and Tae Kwan Do. All teach restraint and try to deal with conflict resolution. The point of the training is to defend yourself against attack.

The martial arts, such as those mentioned above, were all developed after the government/kingdom/occupiers/invaders took the individual arms away from the populace.

A way was needed to protect oneself and these disciplines did that.

Learning them teaches restraint and self-reliance, plus gets the practioner in very good physical shape thereby increasing his life expectancy with a healthy lifestyle. You just can't maintain the physical demands while over-eating, using drugs or over-indulging in alcohol or tobacco.

Context?
Um, doesn't this belong in Variety or some other Hollywood rag? What are we doing, Town Hall? Rehabbing a celebrity who started flailing when he got into the political deep end? This is why celebrities are political leftists; it keep them in the shallow end of the kiddie pool where they can't drown intellectually. That's where Huckabee and his minions belong.

a particularly lethal form
of martial art...Monster's choice to use against those showing him disrespect; if lethal response is that important to you, buy a gun.

Man oh man
Reading comprehension skills certainly aren't what they used to be.

Vindex minor point
Karate is a generic term for "Japanese" styles empty hand fighting just like Tae Kwon Do is for "Korean" styles, Kung Fu for "Chinese" styles, and Kali for "Philipino" styles. Each of the fighting styles have sport versions which are not meant for actual combat. Comparing the sport version of one to a combat version of another is not valid.

I thought I had read that Chuck
had trained Steve McQueen and McQueen - the King of cool - had told Chuck to go into the movies. Does anybody know if this is true? I miss Steve McQueen!

Kwok-Kwan
As a dancer, he knows how to use his body and to imitate the moves of others. And, dancers are by far some of the strongest and most agile athletes you'll ever see. Remember that Kwai-Chang Kane was played by David Carradine -- a dancer.

I would note, also, that Jackie Chan's background is in acrobatics and he's been doing martial arts movies and having people believe he must be a martial artist with a sense of humor for decades.

So, although I would have to wait for the film, I would bet that Mr. Kwok-Kwan will do Bruce Lee's legend justice. Dancers can usually act and that will be a plus.

Personally, I get very exhausted watching movies by martial artists who can't act. Chuck did a good job of playing himself for many years and that was fine. He at least had a range of emotions. But guys like Jet Li -- please, only if I really need a nap.

Monster
All forms of martial arts for kids, I have witnessed, is an absolute good.

They learn discipline, respect, self esteem, and besides, it's very healthy. No one is using it to harm anyone, LOL, it's just something different than the old soccer game. It's simply self improvement.

I'd rather be in a room full of kids who are into martial arts rather than an insolent child couch potato who excels in video games.

Shells
Are they the only two options?

Chuck, don't quite see the relevance
in a martial arts blog here. This is, after all, a political site. Yes, I DO know you are toying with politics right now, but...

If Newt Gingrich wanted to write a column on basket-weaving, say, or dog training - would that be appropriate for Townhall?

Will
Don't be such a wet blanket! This was a nice change of pace. I'm interested in everything.

Fun article
Thanks Chuck. I hope we hear more from you about the martial arts from a personal and close up point of view. Thank you also for your support of Mike Huckabee. I supported him in the primaries and I hope he runs again in 2012. I would like to see you in a major motion picture again too.

Martial Arts
Although this may be a opinion page , I liked Hearing about Bruce Lee From Chuck. I never knew that they were friends. And people (remember)all
people are beautiful in their own way.
Dancers,Martial Artist, And Actors, and everday Joe's like you and me.

Why oh why
Does TH post this drivel from this cheesy Hollywood has-been?

Chuck Vs Lee
No disrespect to Chuck Norris for he is great at what he does, but will he ever admit that Bruce Lee would have beaten him in a street fight? We all know Bruce didn't compete in the non-contact tournaments he deemed pretty much useless in real world combat.

Chan Kwok-kwan a dancer?
It shouldn't be a problem...David Carradine was a dancer too, right?

Tribute to a legend
I had the priviledge of meeting Grand Master Jhoon Rhee this year, and have always admired the Grand Masters, as a Martial Artist, and as a human being.

It is refreshing to see a great man talking about the greatness of others rather than his own.

Mr. Norris, thank you for being a role model for us all as an actor, fellow martial artist, citizen, and human being.
