Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

People said that McCain couldn't make the cut. Many say McCain is still too stiff -- too sterile -- with not enough pizzazz. Some criticize McCain for being too institutionalized. Still others complain about McCain's conservative record. And now the liberal media is falsely implying McCain has engaged in some impropriety. Of course, I'm speaking about Janet Huckabee, whose maiden name is McCain. (Were you expecting someone else?)

With Michelle Obama's patriotism in question, Cindy McCain's loyalty to her man being paraded, and Bill Clinton's anger heating up the headlines, it would not be a complete media lynching without trying to hang the only exculpated presidential candidate's spouse -- namely Janet.

This is probably the first presidential race in history in which the contenders' spouses all have been subjected to intense scrutiny, too. Still true, however, is the maxim: Behind every great man is a great woman. And epitomizing that accolade is Janet Huckabee, who deserves highlighted attention in this final installment of my endorsement series, especially because her character is also now under attack. The more I've gotten to know about her the more impressed I've become.

Janet was born in Louisiana, the fourth of five children, and was raised by a single mom. She had a poor -- not privileged -- upbringing in Hope, Ark. And she and Mike were only 18 years old when they married. Only a year or so into their marriage, she was diagnosed with spinal cancer. Doctors anticipated having to sever her spinal cord, which would have left her a paraplegic. Miraculously, with help from God, the medical world and Mike, she learned to walk all over again. Janet and Mike would go on to have three children (John Mark, David and Sarah).

Janet always has loved the outdoors and taking physical risks. She has sky-dived with the Golden Knights, landed in an F-18 on an aircraft carrier, bungee jumped, hunted rattlesnakes and bears, completed two marathons, and fired a grenade launcher -- hitting the target two out of three times. She even earned a place in the Arkansas Outdoor Hall of Fame by riding a jet ski down the entire Arkansas River. Her love for adventure is one reason Janet was nicknamed the "first tomboy" of Arkansas.

Before becoming first lady of Arkansas, Janet was active in the Beech Street First Baptist Church and helped out with the ACTS-TV station. She served two terms as president in the Texarkana, Ark., Parent Teacher Association, was a substitute teacher for the Texarkana public schools, a pharmacist's assistant, and is an alumnus of the Little Rock Citizens Police Academy. She also attended Ouachita Baptist University, later graduating with honors in organizational management from John Brown University.

As first lady of Arkansas, Janet served on boards for the Campaign for Healthier Babies, the Arkansas Hospice Foundation, the Red Ribbon Week for the Arkansans for Drug-Free Youth program, the Arkansas Lung Association Clean Air Race and the Committee of 100, among others. When tornadoes devastated the state, she chaired the Arkansas Red Cross Disaster Relief Campaign. She ran for secretary of state in 2002 -- the same year Mike was running for re-election as governor. (He won, but Janet lost her bid.) She even was personally willing to spearhead Habitat for Humanity projects, as well as help more than 70,000 Hurricane Katrina victims and evacuees. She is also presently on the Habitat for Humanity International Board.

Through it all, Janet has been a phenomenal mother and stood by her man through almost 34 years of marriage, which includes his three years as lieutenant governor of Arkansas, 12 years as governor and now his run for the presidency. She even has taken a leave of absence from the American Red Cross as Arkansas program manager for state emergency management relations in order to support Mike's bid for the White House.

Janet is a staunch conservative, competitive and a straight shooter. "Janet is going to tell you what she thinks," said her friend Anita McCauley Murrell. "She is a what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of person." And her priorities and values are as straightforward as her personality -- namely faith, family and friends. Janet is truly cut from the same robust and resilient grade as leading women of early America. She bears characteristics of, and a similar spirit to, women such as Abigail Adams, Margaret Corbin and Mary Ludwig Hays McCauley (Molly Pitcher).

If the media's only accusation of her is to drop innuendos of her bad taste and choice of hotels, then Janet's standing on very solid ground. The truth is liberal broadcasting agencies are on a biased smear campaign to ensure a Republican doesn't sit in the Oval Office -- and they even will malign their spouses now to guarantee it. From John McCain to Janet "McCain," how much lower can select media go in their attempts to aid and even orchestrate a Democratic win in November?

The fact is Janet has more credentials, experience and wisdom to be president than Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama combined. Of course, she's not running for the position, but she would make an exceptional first lady of the United States. And what about the possibility of a McCain-Huckabee ticket for the White House? Janet already answered that question by jesting, "Well, we did that 33 1/2 years ago."

AMAZING Janet....AMAZING Chuck!
Another GREAT article by Chuck! I had no idea Janet Huckabee was such an amazing woman. Very creative entrance to article...very funny ending. Like a positive campaign, nice to see some genuine altruistic, positive articles in a world of negative columnists. You're a true American Chuck! Keep it up! I also checked out some of his archives and was VERY IMPRESSED with the variety of commentary, from the founding fathers to martial arts. Check it out… http://worldnetdaily.com/index.php/?pageId=43&authorId=29& tId=8

Sorry Chucky...your boy is history
Say adios to the Huckster, Chuck. The voters figured out Tax Hike Mike and told him to take a hike! That's what he gets for fearing freedom by proposing bans on Internet poker and on other things he decided he didn't like.

Huckster and big government CINOs
Dobson and many of the other nanny-stater CINOs have moved from protecting traditional values from big government to trying to legislate traditional (and other) values via big government. The backlash against this from freedom-loving people who don't believe our values come from the government, including many Christians, has been considerable.

For example, Focus on the Family has worked to ban Internet poker, when gaming (especially skill-based gaming) isn't even mentioned as a sin in the Bible. I enjoy playing a fun game of poker after work. There’s nothing immoral or sinful about it. Seems Dobson is inventing his own values, based on things that "sound" Christian-like to him. Well, many people don't see this as a legitimate function of the Federal government. Freedom-lovers everywhere are pushing back.

It's time for real Republicans to take the party back. Limited government is just that. There's nothing conservative about big government, regardless of how much one loves the laws it passes.

So, just say no to the Huckster, Dobson, and Norris.

I hope everyone will vote for freedom
The statists have taken over both the left AND the right. PLEASE embrace freedom and get rid of the nanny-staters this November.

For example, we don't need the government to protect of from the freedom to play poker on the Internet. It's time to take a stand. I wrote a guide, at http://pokerplayersalliance.org/news/newsandarticles_artic le.php?DID=237 . We need more Republicans to stand for freedom. Please write to your Congressman. A pro-freedom site has an automailer, at http://capwiz.com/pokerplayersalliance/issues/alert/?alert id=10418046&type=co . Check it out.

Should Huckabee throw in the towel?
One MORE thing... What's particularly impressed me about you and Mike Huckabee--is your ability to perservere. The media's call for Mike to throw in the towel just because he's far behind in delegates is an IDIOTIC reason for him to quit, just like Pat Buchanan said a few weeks ago. Any team who quit a Super Bowl game 10 minutes before the end of the 4th quarter (when there was obviously no clear winner) would be heckled from now until the end of time! It isn't pride but a presidential quality to persevere. Any candidate who quits before the competition is done isn't showing humility to me but the inability to go the distance. Huckabee is 10 times the conservative of John McCain, despite he's not a household name. All of our (conservative) own heckling against Huckabee has led us down this road where we're left with John McCain. Do we really think he can win Hillary or Huckabee? Huckabee is only one who is wise enough (to take on Hillary) and young and eloquent enough (to take on Obama), as you (Chuck) have said... http://worldnetdaily.com/index.php/index.php?pageId=45632

Chuck Norris loyalty
I'm impressed at Mrs. Huckabee's qualifications. She seeems an interesting person.

Mike Huckabee must be a great human being to elicit Chuck Norris loyalty.

Huckabee our ONLY HOPE at this point!
Do we really want McCain, with a clearly NON-CONSERVATIVE record (even according to Rush, Hannity, Coulter, Buchanan, etc.)?!

GET THE FACTS and QUIT BUYING THE LIES on Internet sites on Huckabee!

The Constitution Still Means Something

I can not respect a man who supports illegal immigration in this country and would pander to them, which Mike Huckabee does, which means he is committing Treason before even elected.

How can people call themselves Americans when they support illegal invades who are ruining the culture of this country, raping, robbing, murdering as well as contributing to pushing it into bankruptcy? It is beyond absurdity, especially when these very people would take an oath with their hand on the Bible swearing to protect and to defend a Constitution they already plan to ignore.

How can you support someone like that Chuck?

Is this what Walker Texas Ranger promoted, or did it promote honesty and old fashion integrity, something this country in severely lacking in?

In your book, you said your mother always told you God had a plan for you. Was this the plan she envisioned, you supporting someone who would not honor and respect our Constitution?

Last thought Chuck. People who are real believers and walk the Christian walk in life do not have to go around a country touting it. It shows in their actions and life and goes unsaid. Those who make a large effort to tout their Christianity and display it have always been the ones who come up way short I have noticed and have been the ones to disappoint me. They have always put on the big act to cover up who they truly are in their character. Mike Huckabee fits this type, and I can see them coming from a mile away now that I have matured enough to see them. It is amazing how you can pick up on this type as you mature in life and your ability to read people is honed as you grow spiritually.

Do not let a false prophet Chuck tarnish your good image or seduce you with their slick knowledge of the word.

Bows to Chuck with fist touching open palm in opposite hand.

McCain should throw in the towel:

Mc/Huc ticket just fine with me
I would be fine with a Mc/Huck ticket. It would beat the dems in Nov. with a strong prolife and defense ticket coupled with executive experience in the VP position to give us a sure win.

Engineer, thanks for the laughs
Not voting for the Huckster 'cause he's against internet gambling, huh?

Is it in the name ?
It seems that two guys named _orris; one starts with an N, the other an M; compete each week for the lamest pieces found in TownHall.

The McCain I would endorse ? Janet Huckabee - who else.

Perhaps only Dick Morris can top this. I'm thinking this week he'll write an article predicting McCain will be old.

McCain Withheld Controversial Abramoff?

McCain Withheld Controversial Abramoff Email

A Problem for McCain?

HP-On the stump, Sen. John McCain often cites his work tackling the excesses of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff as evidence of his sturdy ethical compass.

A little-known document, however, shows that McCain may have taken steps to protect his Republican colleagues from the scope of his investigation.

In the 2006 Senate report concerning Abramoff’s activities, which McCain spearheaded, the Arizona Republican conspicuously left out information detailing how Alabama Gov. Bob Riley was targeted by Abramoff’s influence peddling scheme. Riley, a Republican, won election in November 2002, and was reelected in 2006.

In a December 2002 email obtained by the Huffington Post — which McCain and his staff had access to prior to the issuance of his report — Abramoff explains to an aide what he would like to see Riley do in return for the “help” he received from Abramoff’s tribal clients.

Well, if you want the federal government to force banks to snoop through your bank account to stop you from spending your own money to play poker, then Huckabee is your man. If you don't care about freedom, Huckabee is your man. If you think government knows best and needs to protect us from ourselves, then Huckabee is your man. If losing your freedoms makes for a good laugh....well, go vote for the Huckster.

Those of us who actually care about freedoms will choose anyone but that clown.

Huckabee Fading to Black
Give it up, Chuck. I always admired your movies and your life story but with this Huckabee obsession your karate strikes are hitting empty air.

Huckabee is finito, done. His best bet is to get a job as a radio talk show host. His performance on Saturday Night Live was prophetic--he's becoming a laughingstock.

Put Janet on TV
Thanks Chuck !
He could pick up A lot of votes with a partner

Surreal
I don't get it. Is the point of this article to convince me to become a Huckamaniac because his wife is virtuous according to Chuck Norris? I'm sure Janet Huckabee is a fine woman but what in the name of all that is good and holy does that have to do with anything? Is this the measure by which we choose our presidential candidates? Is there anything unvirtuous about Cindy McCain? Will Walker Texas Ranger make a comeback? What exactly the hell are we talking about here?

C'mon, Town Hall
Enough with articles by Chuck Norris. What is this web site anyway -- Movieland? Enough.

I'm one of those
evangelical conservatives we hear so much about, but I think Christians are off base when they try to get government to make personal choices for people. If the government gets to decide what is moral, where does conscience come in? As long as one’s choices hurt no one but him/her self, then no one else should be deciding but the individual. Anything else is totalitarian.

I live in Indiana and I publicly supported the legalization of gambling in this state. I am not a gambler but I think adults should have the right to decide for themselves. I also think prostitution should be legal.

I am against abortion not because of religious reasons but because any doctor or scientist will tell you that an intrauterine child is a living human being and as such is entitled to self determination.

heroes
Chuck Norris played characters in stories that helped develop my idea of what a hero is, as a boy. Now, for the first time, for me, an actor is acting a hero as much or more than the character they depicted as an artist. It is great and encouraging in general. :)

We're stuck
The MSM has all but handed the nomination to McCain and now we are gonna have to either hold our noses and vote for the lesser of two evils or let that stealth muslim in the WH. I was for Romney but Huck was a close 2nd. As of engineer and his internet gambling habit much of the reason the housing market is in the fix it's in is because the brokers and lenders were able to push people into loans they were not able to pay back. Now we are in for a big bailout to rescue people who gambled on the housing market and lost. Gambling is a major problem in this country and like drugs is addictive. If being agains interment gambling is Huck's biggest flaw then I am for him more than ever. Either of the dems will use the government to run our lives from womb to the tomb.

Arby
Are you saying that it is final that because one may have a privilege of an politically minded audience via simply being an non-political artist, that this disqualifies their thoughts as valid? That is irrational; you must be of a certain political mind that would allow such conclusions.

Norris for Secretary of Defense

http://thefiresidepost.com/2008/02/26/mccains-100-year-war/

my 2008 scenario
I'd like to see this Nov the names of McVain, Huckabee, Paul, Clinton, Nader, and Obama ALL on the ballot, a splitting of both major parties. Of course, you'd have the various other existing third parties also.
The only thing is, you'd need a Constitutional amendment for a free for all until one had a simple majority so there would be no possibility of the US House selecting the winner.
Also, since we can apparently find all of this money for overseas use in wars and aid and such, I think every one of these candidates should be given a certain amount of public funds to run, and that's all they get!

Robert
Sorry you don't understand how the media works.

It takes wisdom and experience to figure it out.

I was going to congratulate you on writing a post void of a mention of President Bush - but you still managed to slip one in in your last sentence.

How's the weather in Colorado this morning where you are?

Robert

Chuckie, and Sidekick.........
Your heads are too small for your hats. I am really disappointed with you Chuckie. Here I thought that the 3-person crew, big hats, and fighting all of the time was a real winner, but now I find that you have spoiled my dream with political trash and nonsense. Has Huckie done any flip-flops since announcing his candidacy? What are you hiding behind the beard and mustache? You think its cool?

First you give us McCain
Now your sucking up to him for the VP. You guaranteed us amnesty for 15 million new Democrats. Nothing you can say or do will ever make up for that crime against America.

Sorry Chuck
Gov Huckabee is a great guy no doubt, and his wife is wonderful, no doubt.
But in fact, he'd be a wasted choice as a VP nominee. He might have been needed as a Guiliani running mate, but Mccain needs other things. There are a number of others who would actually add needed qualities to the ticket.
He's purely entertainment now. He'll go home and run for the senate in Arkansas, or develop his public appearance career.

Ricky
Went there, didn't see how Huck can still win, but I did see more of the "God's choice" baloney. The only way Huckabee can win is a miracle. But I doubt God will be delivering there. After all, Huckabee is a charlatan if there ever was one, and I don't think the Lord looks too highly on that.

What is funny is that Huck thinks if he can just make it to the convention, that he'll win. But he's no more desirable than McCain., in fact, he's worse. It would be a wide open race at that point. Romney, not Huck would have the advantage.

If Janet Huckabee is so great
Why doesn't Mike think so? When he started gaining traction, where was Janet? All I saw was Mike walking in front of her, basically ignoring her most of the time. There was one clip where they were walking down some steep stair, and Mike acted like she was not even there. The contrast with the way Romney treated his wife and family couldn't have been more stark.

Very telling about what kind of Huck he is.

BTW - I finally did see one interview and she seemed like a normal, happy woman. Too bad she married a bigot.

There's a new conservative party
Come on over to The Swamp to see the first two parts of a three-part series on that party's 2008 platform.

TheEngineer
Engineer?? In layman terms that would be card dealer--wouldn't it?

Since you are against Huckabee, tell us who you are for.
As far as i know, all are against internet poker.

We can change this debacle...
...If we get Newt to run. Him with Santorum or JC Watts or Condi as Veep.

We just have to get him to change his first name.
"She's a witch, she turned me into a newt!"
"You don't look like a newt."
"I got betta!?"

Wow
It is a first, but I have to agree with Robert.

I know, I know, but he is right. "The Media" did not give the election to McCain. At most they may have sold him as the electable candidate, and some bought that, but the media did not give McCain the election.

That is not to say McCain was initially supported by a majority for Republicans, but it was not the media that did it.

First, open primaries allowed independents and crossovers to give him his first primary win, which the media DID translate into "momentum for McCain", rather than a fluke.

When several other open primary wins came, the voters bought the line that he was on a roll, and threw the election to him.

Yes, the media played a role, but in all honesty, it was the combination of open primaries and wishy-washy voters that really gave us McCain. Even without the media, the outcome would have been much the same.

So, much as I hate to say it, Robert is right (though for the wrong reasons, as he thinks people were just standing in the streets chanting for "McNasty" as the man is called in Robert's juvenile fantasy world...)

Now, as far as driving Thompson form the race, that I will lay at the feet of the media. (And, please, no one tell me how he lacked "fire in the belly". The very fact that everyone uses those very same words shows just how pervasive that media trope became.) And Giuliani was chased from the race by a combination of a bad strategy and an even worse media presentation of that strategy. Without bad press, he may have stood a slight chance (not much, but a small chance).

So I blame the media for eliminating one, maybe two, contenders, and that did help McCain a bit, but, really, the open primary is the main culprit, that and voters who love to follow the trend in elections. So blame our primary system, not the media.

One addition
I would add that, while Robert loves to say that the Republicans are "stupid" for following the media, and will probably take my argument to say the Republicans are stupid for following someone who wins a few primaries, that problem exists on both sides.

Yes, the Republicans largely jumped on the McCain bandwagon after a few open primary wins, but on the Democrat side, we have Obamania. So if Republicans did have their lemming moment, the Dems are having their Jim Jones moment to match.

Afraid following the crowd is a bad trait among many humans of all political stripes. So, yes, we were saddled with McCain by those following the crowd, but the Dems are about to buy a complete mystery candidate for the same reason. Just wait until the euphoria wears off and they have to suffer through the Obama hangover.

Chuck Norris stayed in a Holiday Inn
Did Chuck Norris stay in a Holiday Inn Express or something? What exactly makes a martial artist and actor in wholesome but often mediocre movies and televison qualified to pontificate on politics, anymore than any of a million others who come here?

Do we really want to put a lot of faith in the political judgement of someone who made the choice to wear unrealistic hair pieces rather than age naturally, even though he would look fine bald with his physique and features, has had mildy disturbing and again unnecessary facial surgeries, and who hawks excercise machines on infomercials?

I hear Chuck is a good man, he once used my company's river rafting service years ago and I was told he was super nice even though this was at the peak of his career.

But what is with TownHall lately? From the nepotism of having Newt Ginrich's unqualified daughter prattle on, to having paid hacks give "opinion pieces" (as if their opinions weren't formed by those paying them), it's really gone downhill.

This sort of partisan piece is simply not useful.

Thanks Chuck
The media has had very little to say about Janet Huckabee. It's great to finally get a feel for who she is.

Someone needs to beef up her wikipedia entry it's sparse.

Learn to read with comprehension! He's entitled to his opinion. He can chime in like you and I just did in the comments section. I was objecting to featuring him as a "columnist" even though he's completely unqualified to do so, as he has no experience in these matters, other than he's flown on the same plane as Mike Huckabee. Many of the less effective columnists here at least are in politics for a living or have extensive knowledge of the issues that gives them insights the rest of us lack. And so they're useful.

This column wasn't. It's one personal friend vouching for another. If you tried to do this little trick when applying for a job, you'd be laughed at. "well my friend bob says I'd be great at it! What's he do for a living? Oh, he's just on my bowling team"

Does writing TV show scripts make someone qualified to comment on political issues in a column featured by the website? Of course not. They put him here because he's a celebrity. My point was more critical of town hall than Mr Norris or Gov Huckabee. But you apparently lack the intellectual nuance to pick that up.

I think Laura Ingraham said it best in "Shut up and Sing". Should I now vote for Jerry Seinfeld's candidate of choice because I liked that show?

Remember, Mr. Norris is here alongside columnists such as Thomas Sowell and other great thinkers. What's next, a column by Mike Huckabee's grandchildren entitled "why grandpop would make a super duper president" ?

The Significance of a Norris Endorsement
Funny, when all of those liberal "actors" strut out and tell us how we should support Gore, and fight global warming, etc., etc., ad nauseum, we conservatives have always laughed at them. Yet now many pay homage to Mr. Norris because he plays a hero on TV. Huh?

As I said elsewhere, even if Huckabee stood a snowball's chance of getting the Republican nomination, he would be the only person less likely to get my vote than McCain is.

Robert
I'll make this real simple for you and I'll type slowly...

What do you think the outcome would have been in earlier primaries had the NYT NOT held back this McCain lobbyist story until after he became the presumptive nominee?

If you think McCain has a prayer of winning the general election without strong support from the conservative base, then it is you who are living in a fantasy world.

Go shovel the snow off your walk, Frobusto, my liberal "friend".

Quack, quack, quack...

Warped Opinions
Partisan is the new fad and Opinion is warped by gossip-mongers (MSM) and the party poopers (er, party chairs).

Look at the records, look at the web sites.

I honor Huckabee for staying in the race. He's gained major points with me for that. Who bought off Romney to quit so early?

NO ONE believes that McCain could win a game of tiddly winks. He has been set up to assure a Dem victory.

Lies and distortions are on both sides too. For example, I don't happen to agree with Obama's positions on things, but I do believe he is an honorable man. Why would I say that? Because, one of his supporters is General Scott Gration.

I know Scott and his wife and they are both honorable, Christian people. They have latched onto the rising star to further their own ambitions for the White House, but I don't think they'd lie about the man to do it.

Chuck Norris and Conservative Angst
I know the left uses stars to promote their silly thoughts and ideas even when the star is mostly illiterate. And I know that it is a good thing to display conservative thoughts even when there are differences among us.

Why then does the repeated puffery of this Huckabee follower, prominently displayed on a regular basis in a conservative forum, leave me a little bothered?

If Huckabee were writing this column the webpage and the silly election laws might limit him yet his shill can get a public forum on a regular basis - spouting pretty much the same pr.

I know I should be happy that conservative ideas are getting published- even if the author is better known for kicking than for any advanced political study. But it still bothers me that Mr Norris gets such a forum and uses it as a sideline to his actual vocation, to promote his particular candidate.

That said - let me add my voice to those who yearn for a candidate that uses the word "freedom" as something that should apply to Americans as well as Iraqis.

Vanagon...
"The hatred of the Thompson and Romney campaigns has redefined the republican party."

Truer words have never been spoken. I am a Huckabee supporter, Romney was my second choice. But those in the Romney and Thompson camps have put such hatred out after "their guys" dropped their bid that it's sickening. I don't want McCain in the WH, but I will support him if he truly ends of being the nominee. Only because to do otherwise is unthinkable.

What has happened/been happening in the GOP pains me.

Reply to Vanagon
You say Huckabee was the only conservative, because he was pro-life. But he was clearly liberal on most of his fiscal policies (despite the claims to the opposite). He is a bit hard to follow on defense, as he seems to talk a hard-line position, but drifts into occasional hand-holding, kumbayah-singing, "let's all talk about it" positions from time to time. So, I will grant that he may (possibly) be conservative on defense, but he is hardly alone there, and many come across as much stronger.

However:

1. Huckabee was conservative only on some issues. He has a weak economic record, and his defense position has been all over the map. even his official web site has some pretty vague weasel-word positions. It could be read as hard-line, stay the course, or almost as easily as a Hillary/Obama "we all need to chat" position.

2. Several other candidates are pro-life. Thompson said it was a state issue, which is valid, and not a liberal position. Yes, Romney changed his position on abortion, but that means he is now pro-life. Do you say no one can ever join the pro-life movement if they were EVER pro-choice? You must belong to a small movement, then.

3. Pro-life/pro-choice is not the sole measure of conservatism. By your standard, if Obama came out pro-life he would become a conservative.

4. I don't think the hatred was on the part of Thompson or Romney. The "Aren't Mormon's just worshiping Satan?" propaganda seemed to be coming from Huckabee. I don't recall any equally nasty slanders coming from either Thompson or Romney.

So, I have to say, Huckabee is not exactly a model conservative, nor was he even the sole conservative in the race.

Ann Romney
If Chuck wanted an amazing first lady, he should have backed a better candidate and written about a real class: Ann Romney.

WHY? Walker, Texas Ranger? WHY?
Why does a almost 70 year old B list actor post on TownHALL.

Look I know Huckabee plays Bass Guitar.
I know he is funny and personable.
I know he is in the miracle game.
I know he is DONE for '08, DONE.
I know he will not be VP
I know he said he wants to change the constitution ro match the bible. I have a well read and worn bible I take to church. I believe it is the word of God, as much as I believe God helped inspire the men who wrote the constitution to write the perfect document. THERE IS NO NEED TO BE RELIGIOUS ABOUT POLITICS. You CAN'T Legislate religion belief or morals or love for Jesus. Jesus KNOWS THIS. Jesus would not want LAWS to enforce FAITH BASED initiatives. IT COMES FROM THE HEART CHUCK!! BAM I KNOCKED YOU OUT SON!

However I don't care about bass playing in a President. I want a president that will make good decisions for things in his CONTROL.

Things not in the presidents control:
Gay rights, they are coming, sorry
Abortions, sad but they are a fact of life, sorry
The people choose these things not the President.

Now War, I care about. McCain says we'll be there for 100 years is stupid. Surge worked time to go and stop the flow of US blood and billions for a country that is NOT an annex of the USA, oil or not.

Now what people don't want to talk about, is THERE WILL BE OIL WARS, if not in 50 years than a 100 years, when nations like the USA and China and Russia will use military force to get it if needed. THAT IS POSSIBLE.

THE ONLY WAY TO AVOID THAT IS:
Conservation
New Energy sources (not just drilling Alaska)

The GOP is never about conservation. In fact climate change is a joke. Hollywood is a joke. Conservation is a joke. I think the GOP is a joke; A joke who is in the pocket of TelCom, Oil, Energy, mining, financial and Defence corporation's. SAD Walker Texas ranger, you are a joke to the GOP, you are a hollywood'er.

ANYONE other than McCain!
McCain has no right to expect support from the Rank & File Republicans he has betrayed many times in exchange for praise from MSM.

Now MSM is about to do the same thing to McCain that he did to us.
LOL He deserves it ;-)

A joke for Jetpilot the "Conservationist
Liberals whine about dependence on foreign oil yet block attempts to drill for domestic oil.
Liberals whine about people in foreign lands not liking Americans.
Liberals whine about "Global Warming & Carbon Footprints".

Liberal solution? Ethanol.

Now we depend on corn imported from Mexico.
Now the Mexican people are angry because we have taken their food and driven prices up.
Burning ethanol produces just as much carbon per gallon as petroleum but gets much less mileage and therefore more carbon is produced.

If you could understand this you would know why Conservatives think all Liberals are insane!

No-Character Thompson
SHOULD be hated, Vanagon!

Last night an episode of "Law and Disorder" was aired. In it a tall, thin, blonde female spewed a caricature of Ann Coulter's rhetoric. All the characters in the show expressed hatred and distaste for her, and it was put forward as a given that she was the "most hated woman in America".

At one point she spoke of having to meet with "Rush". At another point, one character said this character was even worse than Ann Coulter.

Fred Thompson's character even badmouthed this character.

Fred Thompson wants to be my President, yet badmouths one of the most conservative voices in America? F* you, Fred.

He could easily have said, "I'm not doing this episode." or "I won't say these lines". Having done so would have won him lots of support and, more importantly, media attention.

Fired from Law and Disorder on a matter of principle? The voting sheeple would have eaten it up.

Chuck Norris column
For you critics of Chuck Norris' column, please bear in mind he has a right, just as you did in your opinions - to write him. While I am not a Huckabee supporter, I do believe what Janet Huckabee in her life should be praised. Actually I do believe after reading Norris' opinion she certainly has better qualifications than Hillary. I also believe that Huckabee at this point would be a much better, probably more honest than John McCain, who like Billary duo, are liars and would say anything to get your vote. But kudo's to both Norris and Janet Huckabee. Bear in mind Norris stood up for someone he believed in which in the film industry is a difficult road for a Republican.

Rank and file likes its an army, in lock step. Troopers who follow orders and DO only one thing as the elites of the GOP order? WOW! The word fascism comes to mind. And what, "betrayed"?

GOP philosophy, stick together for power, right or wrong, power in unity, power first, corporations second and than the people, unless you can lie to them and make them buy tax cuts for the rich is good for them to.

McCain is right about tax cuts only for 1% of the people.
McCain is right about campaign reform to put the lobbyist out of business.
McCain is right about almost every thing he's stepped out of line on except immagration.

>Now MSM is about to do the same thing to McCain >that he did to us. LOL He deserves it ;-)

You little gloat'er. The MSM did not do anything. The people rejected the sexual innuendo. However the lobby crap is a valid point. IT IS A PROBLEM IN DC. It may be legal and what goes on all the time but it stinks. GOOD FOR THE NY TIMES TO POINT IT OUT. Shame on the NY Times for putting in the tabloid gossip like Rupert Murdoch's own NY Post does all the time and Fox News does often.

Chuckie boy
You have been kicked in the head once too many times. Here are the facts. McCain is no conservative. Neither is your man, the Huskster. There is no conservative on the GOP. The Democrats were smart enough to pick two known liberals for their party. All we get is a bunch of conservative pretenders. I know you are too old to do hook kicks anymore, but maybe you can go back to doing a few more Total Gym commercials. You are out of your league.

Janet Huckabee is an....
...impressive lady, that's for sure.

But Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton would counter her record of giving, personal sacrifice and personal involvement by saying, most likely with a straight face and without embarrassment, "the government will do all of that".

Norris Opinion
Chuck Norris & Huckabee have proven to be religious bigots regarding their smear campaign against Mitt Romney early in the Republican nomination process. The Republican party has NEVER done anything for anti-woman rights, I mean the anti abortion issue, except play lip service. Sure they got a Roman Catholic or two on the Supreme Court, wink-wink, neutral on Roe v. Wade. Now what?

75% of the American people want woman’s right to choose. Over half the people reject late term abortions unless mothers health is endangered. I agree, make 2nd term limits.

Enforcing the law? Yes, report underage girls, aka statutory rape; get the guys. Late term? No unless it meets strict criteria. It’s the law. How about Birth control? Yes & more sex Ed, lower unwanted pregnancies.

When every Republican adopts a crack baby, than I'll go 100% illegal abortions.

Who takes care of those unwanted babies yr after yr? Adoption babies ain't all blond, blue eyed offspring from the Captain of the football team & #1 cheerleader. Many have life long severe birth defects. GO FOR IT. Force people to give birth.

What’s the end game? To outlaw abortions? Jail doctors and woman?

Mid 1970's Roe v Wade was debated. I remember all the Pro & Cons as a kid. It was decided. Than Reagan, mid 80's, 90's, Neo-Cons stole abortion & religion for VOTE getting. IT WORKED WELL FOR OVER A DECADE.

The GOP elite are as secular as anyone, get abortions if it suited them and have contempt for the religions right.

Evangelicals wised-up, GOP lies & the Dems aren’t evil heathens or cheerleaders for abortion, just civil rights. No one loves abortion. It's horrible, but Gov must stay out of our lives, bodies & bedrooms (very conservative concept? yes).

Abortions will never be outlawed. It’s impractical, unrealistic & puts woman (mostly poor) at risk. You want to change people’s hearts, do it through Church. Stop being authoritarian Jr. Taliban'ers.

Vanagon
Sorry, but there are issues besides pro-life that need to be addressed. I sometime think some pro-life single issue voters would vote for Ceaucescu. After all, he DID end abortion.

Sorry, but by voting a single issue, you marginalize yourself. Either candidates know they have your vote because they are pro-life, and so don't worry about any other issue, or they know they will never have your vote and so ignore you. In short, except for pro-life, you can influence no issue because you are a single-issue voter.

And, of course, you single issue also guarantee you will never get what you want. You say "McCain is not pro-life enough, so I am sitting it out" and you get the EVEN LESS pro-life Hillary or Obama. Great way to shoot yourself in the foot!

Jetpilot
How many Crack Babies have you adopted?
Before you advise other people you need to give us an example.

Aren't you a liberal? Funny that a liberal is defending McCain. Then again, you are not the first. The NY Times endorsed the man. Bill Press said McCain was his favorite Republican, that is until he got the nomination sewn up. I couldn't care less that McCain may not be pro-life enough. I think they need to leave the abortion issue to the meat processing plants. However, conservatives believe McCain is lacking in some of the biggest issues, i.e. 1st Amendment, taxes, illegal immigration, 2nd Amendment, global warming, individual rights such as smoking, etc. On all these issues, he is a liberal Democrat, through and through, a big-governmnet man. As a liberal, you should hate the man, because he wants to extend the war forever, much like LBJ did in the 60's.

I was not speaking of Huckabee, but of your post. Huckabee is not a conservative except on a few social issues. His time in Arkansas was hardly a triumph of fiscal conservatism. He was more akin to Clinton with a Bible than a real conservative.

My comments about single issue voters was directed at your claim that the party is in trouble for not embracing this single issue.

How come her conservatism
hasn't translated to her husband in his campaign? He started out bashing Bush and has only recently talked about fighting terrorists and closing the border. That plus his colusion with McCain to attack everyone else is the reason he's not a conservative. He let a lib-lover like McCain win.

Gambler5112
Liberal? Because I fail to embrace Huckabee? Please!

Or is it because I reject the myopic "pro-life or else" voting pattern? Or is it because I supported Thompson's federalist approach of returning the question to the states?

Well, Mr. Judge of Who Is a Conservative,. think about this: If the abortion question were returned to the states, some would make abortion illegal, and end at least some of those deaths.

On the other hand, you keep fighting at the national level. While you lose, millions die. And even if you win, one change in the supreme court, and it back to the way it is now.

Why not return it to the states. It will become illegal in at least some states and stop some of the deaths. Is that not better than just letting deaths continue at the current rate while you wait to win your all or nothing fight?

Again, you myopic pro-life single issue voters often miss real solutions as you focus on the same fight you have lost over and over.

Morality and Constitutional Amendments
Weren't the Constitutional Amendments to prohibit slavery and allow blacks and women the same rights as other humans moral amendments? Our founding fathers say it best. [quote]"We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." --October 11, 1798[/quote]

If conservatives vote for candidate strongest on the moral issues; Mike Huckabee can win enough delegates to force a brokered convention. Lincoln became the GOP by a brokered convention. It is the primary election. As long as there is a candidate in the race with strong moral values; you don't have to vote for the lesser of evils. Vote for Huckabee to give America the chance to elect a consistent conservative to battle the liberals in Nov.

Sorry, Chuck, but
wrong McCain. That train has already left the station. McCain will have the nomination wrapped up after March 4. Your admiration for Mrs. Huckabee and her husband is commendable and it was a very nice article, but Huck is not the conservative's choice at this time.

You don't read very well, do you? Where did I say Huckabee is a conservative? I said just the opposite. And, I said I couldn't care less about the abortion issue. Read before you write. I was calling you a liberal, because of your support for McCain. McCain is like an abusive husband, and you are his wife. How many times does he have to cheat on you before you say enough is enough? Nehemiah Scudder - pardon; "Mike Huckabee" - isn't going to so much as make a smudge on the floor at the Republican National Convention this year.

The "Rockefeller Republicans" have sewn this one up in precisely the same way they stitched the GOP into a sack in '96, and that lead weight around your ankles is Bob Dole all over again.

The worst possible thing that might happen to the Republican Party - and to the conservative movement in America (because, kiddies, John McCain is living proof that the two are *VERY* different entities) is the unlikely election of Arizona's senior senator to a four-year spasm of stupidity in the White House.

If John McCain isn't Bob Dole all to hellangone over again (and therefore a political defeat looking for someplace to happen), he's Herbert Hoover.

Yet another dumbschmuck career politician with delusions of adequacy looking to run the country right into an economic cataclysm.

I love a man who is religious, good family man, believes in the sanctity of marriage and protects the unborn. That is the definition of a good man. But, that is only half the definition of a conservative. We conservatives don't want just a good man. We want a strong conservative.

[ Immigrants from Mexico and other places have been coming into the country for decades, and it is a fact we need the workers. … Ronwik ]

You are clueless and you are pushing the illegal problem yourself by enticing people to believe your tripe of “we need the workers”. This country managed for years to build our infrastructure as our population grew from our own births without the influx of illegal aliens overburdening our infrastructure. We can again provide the workers to build and support our infrastructure once the illegal aliens are gone. WE DO NOT NEED THEM TO WORK OUR JOBS. The illegal aliens take away jobs our teenagers and young men have filled for decades where they learn job skills and grow in maturity.

There are plenty of young adults in this country who would fill their jobs.

By you pushing people to believe we need them, you are supporting the invasion and destruction of our country which makes you sir a TRAITOR.

Chuck Norris is right
Re the statement from Chuck Norris

"From John McCain to Janet "McCain," how much lower can select media go in their attempts to aid and even orchestrate a Democratic win in November?"

There is no limit so they can always "go lower". The liberal media forced John McCain on us. There was no need to have a primary campaign.

The media, the schools, the universities control the minds of most Americans. The only hope for decent taxpaying Americans who believe in limited government and a "USA First" agenda is a 2nd American Revolution. Only a fool believes that we can change anything at the voting booth. We WILL lose our nation if we do not reverse this rapid destruction of our sovereignty. The voting booth will never get it done for us.

The percentage of nontaxpaying, noneducated voters in this country is soaring and swamping the rest of us. Again, it is impossible to stop the destruction of our nation at the voting booth.

If you vote for McCain, it will be like voting for that socialist idiot, that "Africa First" and "Mexico Second" George Bush all over again. Stay home election day. Let the Democrats destroy this nation so we can put it back together again during our lifetime.

A good man and his wife
Dear Mr. Norris; I commend you on the words about this man and his wife. They certainly appear to be good people. Unfortunately, I cannot support him for Pres or VP - just don't believe he is the right person. He may want to consider a run for Senate. Again, very nice article.

TopGun
You are exactly right. My children cannot find summer jobs because the illegals have taken all of the low-skill, entry level jobs like landscaping, roofing, etc. I ask these pro-illegal people what is the number one employer of illegals? Agriculture. The pro-illegal crowd says we must have them to do the jobs Americans won't do. McCain said that to a union worker group last year. When one of the workers said I'll do it, if the wages were market wages and not slave illegal wages. The McCain response? None of you have what it takes to do these hard jobs, even if I pay you $50 an hour. This is the man we want to be our President, a man who thinks so little of American workers? People like Ronwik says the economy will collapse, especially agriculture, if all the illegals go home. Bullcit! I happen to know alot of farmers. They tell me if there is a labor shortage, they will invest in heavy machinery to make up the difference, something they have been putting off for decades because of the flow of cheap, illegal labor. And, they tell me the initial investment of these machinery will pay for itself in a matter of a few years.

No, that would be a mechanical engineer.

"Since you are against Huckabee, tell us who you are for.
As far as i know, all are against internet poker."

Huckabee is the only candidate who promised to veto any legislation making Internet poker clearly legal. The other three frontrunners are all pretty much neutral.

I'm voting for Ron Paul in the primaries. He cannot win, but it's a vote against the federal nanny-state. I'll vote for either the Republican or the Libertarian candidate in the general election.

Norris is embarrassing himself
This piece is almost as embarrassing as the appearance by Huckabee on SNL. Why does anyone even focus on this man, Huckabee? He seems to wear it as a badge of courage and honor that he has outlasted everyone in the Republican race except McCain, and that he somehow came in second, when, in fact, any of the Republican candidates could have stayed in this long and probably all finished ahead of the Huckster. He's just the only one who hasn't realized he has lost. Embarrassing.

Maybe he could do some infomercials with Chuckie next.

TheEngineer
Is there is a Libertarian Party candidate this year? I voted for Harry Browne and Mike Badnarik the last two elections. I'll probably go Ron Paul this time around.

His biggest problem was his propensity to use the one liner as opposed to sound debate. I mean, "He looks like the one who lays you off." Come on. He taxed and offered state money to illegals. Everyone of the GOP candidates except McCain would have put conservative judges on the bench so anyone being anti-abortion is moot. Gay marriage is yesterday's news. I'm sure it will be rammed down our throat if we don't get conservatives in Congress but Americans have voted again and again that they don't want it. They don't want illegals running the country either but if you listen to the media (Obama/Clinton) and McCain's resurgence is because we've become more open to these foreign people yearning to breathe free. Give me a break.

"There are some things that should be and remain illegal for obvious reasons."

I agree, and illegal immigration should be at the top of the list. On this issue, Huckabee, McCain, Bush and Kennedy are all buddies.

Vanagon
What is the "obvious" reason for making a game of skill like poker illegal? Whatever it is, it must not be too compelling, as poker is clearly legal throughout much of the U.S. in card rooms, casinos, lodges, and kitchen tables. It's legal in most of the U.S. on the Internet as well, though this is disputed by the DoJ. And, guess what? People playing cards at the kitchen table have not caused the sky to fall.

If you think allowing people to play cards at the kitchen table is libertarian, I'd hate to see what you think of as reasonable government limitations on freedom.

I have heard it from the horse's mouth. If you can go back about eight months, you will find out on TH that I was a huge Huckabee supporter from the start. Then, he was asked about his view on amnesty and the border. That's all she wrote. I have been against him ever since.

BTW, the Huckabee conservatism is not unlike the "compassionate conservatism" that has gotten us into the current mess. Huge government, massive spending, open borders, come one, come all, our land is your land, all in the name of compassion. If I want all that, I can vote for a Democrat.

vanagon
"Gambling, be it poker, slots or lotterly, is bad for the country and is bad for the poor."

Yep, you are definitely a Huckabee supporter. On second thought, you sound more like a McCain supporter. You like the nanny state. Government must keep you from bad habits like smoking, gambling, drinking, fatty foods, unsafe sex, and to top it off, NOBODY should be poor.

vanagon - the word is ''decriminalize''
--
The chief reason for a real, honest-to-God (as opposed to theocratic "social") conservative to want to get government to hellangone out of even suicidally stupid self-injuring schmucks' private lives is because any aggrandizement of government power beyond the protection of citizens' rights (see the first ten Amendments) is *DEADLY DANGEROUS* to the very concept of governance under rule of law.

Government isn't the brains of society. It isn't our conscience, either.

At best, it's analogous to the immune system.

Defending the body politic against "enemies foreign and domestic."

Malignant overgrowth of the immune system is called "leukemia."

The concept we call "rule of law" is embodied in the Constitution in Article I, with particular emphasis (look *REAL* close, sonny!) Section 9 of Article I.

And reinforced in Amendments 9 and 10.

If you're a *real* conservative (and not just another nanny-state numbnuts), you don't want the federal or state or local governments having anything to do with prostitution or drugs or gambling or any other similarly witless, self-indulgent, wrong-headed aspect of human nature.

It's not a "War on Drugs" or anything else so lofty, you damned fool.

It's a war against stupidity, and stupidity is an inescapable reality.

Jeez, just look at all the thousands of stupid schmucks who've been voting in the primaries for John McCain.

Only a complete bloody idiot supports a "war" upon reality itself.

Internet Gambling

The problem with playing cards on the internet is collusion, several friends playing as a team against others at the same table, and how it creates an unfair advantage to strip the victim of their funds. With IM messenger and cameras, the robbers have tools where they can communicate freely under the radar and unsuspecting victims are basically robbed and think they just had a bad hand.

Playing in a tournaments or just a two person game, one on one, is the only protection from collusion.

Unfortunately, there are families who let gambling overrun their lives and kids suffer, but if it were not gambling, it would be some other “hope” they are searching for to replace the hard work that brings success.

Smoking is bad too, so is over consumption of liquor. We already tried prohibition and seen the result. People have to decide on their own what moral values they want to live by. The government can not make that choice.

Collusion is an issue. Fortunately, sites can detect such behavior by checking if these friends only play with each one another and come and go at the same time. Also, skilled players can detect collusion rather quickly (I know I can). Moving this industry onshore will only improve issues like this.

Websites are nice, but anyone can find one to support their argument. I know what I heard from Huckabee's own mouth eight months ago when he wasn't a serious contender. Once it was down to Huckabee and McCain, he became a border hawk and he no longer supports amnesty. Why should I believe him now? We are all arguing for nothing. McCain will be the nominee. Huckabee should just go back to Saturday Night Live. It's kind of sad, because I had high hopes for Huckabee. He let me and alot of conservatives down when the true Huckabee came out.

Libertarian's with your mindset will never care enough about the impoverished to understand.

Gambling, be it poker, slots or lottery, is bad for the country and is bad for the poor."

So, the definition of "caring" is to strip people of their freedoms? LOL! Sorry, but the father who commented on what to do with his $5 doesn't need the federal government to protect him from himself. If Americans cannot be trusted with freedom, we're doomed.

I hate to break this to you, but groups like Focus on the Family oppose gambling, cards, beer, dancing, laughing, PG-13 movies, and other things simply because they don't like them. They brand such stuff as "addictive" and "harmful" and then act like they're saving America by banning these liberties.

The FoF argument always follows this template:

--------------------

[Activity in question] is harmful to our society on so many levels. And the [activity in question] is often the most harmful and destructive example of [general activity in question].

Because [activity in question] is addictive and all-consuming, many individuals, whose curiosity tempts them to try [activity in question], become "hooked" on [activity in question]. An escalating cycle of [activity in question] use begins and that cycle can result in the disruption of every aspect of the participant's life, including family and career.

People just aren't buying the scaremongering anymore.

Vanagon
"gambler, doc, and theengineer sound like a bunch of college kids who want to get off on their gambling jollies."

We want to "get off" on our freedom jollies. We don't need YOU to tell us what's good for us. And, we don't need our banks spying on us to accomplish this.

Also, I'm pro-life.

Huckabee has some good ideas
I like his "close down the IRS" idea. I'm a man of modest means, and the IRS has audited me twice. If he can get the nomination, I can vote for him. He is ten times better than the current front runner. If McCain gets the nomination, it will be Ron Paul for me. Regardless of who wins the presidency, we will just have to suck it up and elect a conservative Republican Congress.

I think you should look at the voting
Record. Everyone can find words in print to support their argument. Look at what the candidates have done.

What's so hard about that?

There was a comment about why should we
Granted, it's not as much fun as watching a gaggle of barely literate libs

"gambler, doc, and theengineer sound like a bunch of college kids who want to get off on their gambling jollies."

More liberal textbook rebuttals. I voted for Nixon in my first election. I have seen my freedoms taken away one by one, both under Democrat and Republican administrations. We don't need any more liberals in office, including compassionate conservatives. BTW, I don't gamble. I don't even buy lottery tickets. But, if someone else wants to play poker or other forms of entertainment, I have no problems with it.

Janet McCain Huckabee
Thanks again, Chuck, for you support of these two. One might believe that the American public only appreciate candidates with a "cloud" on their reputation. Thanks for reminding us that we can do good things and burn brightly without blowing someone else's candle out. Keep up the good work.

Vanagon
I'm pro-life because abortion infringes on the rights of unborn children. I'm pro-poker rights because big government infringes on my rights.

I don't trust government to decide what's proper to regulate and what isn't. Do you? What happens when they decide to tell churches to stop preaching against homosexuality? Will you say that's okay too? I won't say that's okay, because I believe in free speech on principle.

Also, you haven't made the case that poker harms society and requires prohibition (aside from stating your personal beliefs). BTW, you keep calling it "gambling". Gambling is where someone hopes for good luck to win. Poker is a game of skill, like chess.

Finally, this mindset is pushing people from the GOP. If you lose people like me, abortion and issues conservatives actually care about are imperiled, as there aren't enough big government nanny-stater CINOs to win elections.

Judge spelling?
Why should we judge someone because of grammar and spelling?

Because someone who takes the time to learn how to do it right is more likely to be someone who has thought things through.
Also they are more likely to be of an older generation who has learned how to think critically; and they probably went through a skrewel system which didn't think self-esteem is more important than spelling.

I could go on with this but you get the idea.
There are a lot of Americans who could stand to learn how to speak English.

And, for the love of Mike, learn to state your point clearly and back it up. I'll consider any opinion which is well stated and obviously thought out. This is America show some pride in what you do and do it well; whatever it may be.

Take Mr. Norris for example. He came from HOLLYWOOD and he can speak English pretty darn well. If someone from Hollywood can do it anyone can.

Gambler 5112 What gripes my cookies

"Should the government make abortion illegal or keep it legal?"

It's not contradictory. Too many social cons think all laws are about morality, when laws are actually properly about protection of rights, including property rights. Abortion should be illegal not because it's immoral. While it is, I believe it should be illegal because it infringes on the rights of unborn children. That's not a government decision, as government doesn't grant natural rights. Rather, people possess these rights already.

"Gambling and prostitution and drugs have all been tried before and have all failed before."

Gambling is legal in some form in every state but Utah and Hawaii. It hasn't brought down the republic yet. Also, you've not proved that poker causes any problems. Your example, the lottery, is certainly worse than poker, especially as state governments actually encourage people to play. I don't...not because it's wrong, but because it's stupid. Still, the country survives. So, LOL at states that cry the blues over Internet poker while promoting lotto sales.

"It is our job as citizens to elect the people we believe will make the things illegal that should be and make the things legal that should be."

True. I'll vote for politicians who believe in the Constitution. You'll vote for nanny-staters like Huckster. Libs will vote for nanny-staters like Hillary Clinton. Don't be surprised to see libs running the show for the foreseeable future. :-(

"To say that you are taking a purely conservative approach is peddling that libertarian tripe is complete nonsense."

I am taking the conservative approach. This is a huge power grab by the federal government that clearly was not envisioned by the Founding Fathers.

Three Mysteries
1) Why is this article titled "A McCain I Would Endorse" when it's about Janet Huckabee?
2) Why is it that Janet Huckabee "has more credentials...than Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama combined"? She went to inferior schools, has worked only at a couple of clerical jobs, was on the PTA, and has sat on committees and boards that wouldn't have gone near her but for her husband's postion. Is she a United States Senator and we just hadn't heard?
3) What qualifies Chuck Norris to be writing this silly article? Is townhall that hard-up for contributors?

Re "I don't trust the government to decide what to regulate": Then either somebody else decides, or nobody decides.

If somebody else decides, and it's nobody in federal or local government, then it's probably going to be somebody having to do with the product in question. Like maybe the guy who manufactures and sells it? How do you think that will come out?

If nobody decides, and we have a totally unregulated society, and anything goes, and anybody can sell anything to anyone no matter how useless or harmful, then we will have a free-for-all. Your angry neighbor can buy rat-poison and put it in your tea. Some crook can take your grandmother's life savings if just he can convince her that she's buying The Fountain of Youth. Your ten year-old can buy whiskey and cigarettes and throw a party. Your looney brother-in-law can manufacture nondescript goop on the kitchen stove and sell it as a cure for cancer. Your butcher can find roadkill on the highway, skin it, and sell it to you as Filet Mignon. Is that really the society you want to live in?

Vanagon
"I love the way you do not want to answer the question whether prostitution and meth and opium should be legal."

I don't believe these should be regulated at the federal level. Let the states make these laws, the way our founding fathers intended.

"You are a fraud. You are not a conservative. In fact, you and gambler are liberals, pure and simple.

Then you use "pro-life" as if it means something to you, yet you put down the only candidate who has called for a constitutional amendment banning the killing of the unborn."

You are no conservative. You're not a fraud. You're just deluded. You see, you believe in big government over freedom and liberty. You FEAR freedom. You think government needs to protect people from themselves, just like the lefties who wish to ban trans fats and regulate fast food.

I, OTOH, am a pro-life, pro-Second Amendment, pro-Constitution conservative in the tradition of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan (you're more in the tradition of William Jennings Bryant).

Also, I do not support the pro-life amendment. Rather, this should be up to states to decide, just like all other murder laws should ought to be. You've seen what happened when the federal government expanded enough to assert rights in this area -- Roe v Wade. That's what you get when you give government power. You see, the power you give government today is the power they will use against you tomorrow.

So, support freedom. Protect our values from big government, but don't try to promote values with the power of big government.

As usual, you confuse legislating morality with laws that protect property and other rights. I'll try once more. Murder isn't illegal because it's immoral. Rather, it's illegal because it deprives the person murdered from his right to live.

Government...As If There Was Only One!
Individuals abdicate their responsibilities to cities, counties and states which, in turn, look to the Federal Government. And FedGov has been only too willing for more than 70 years to usurp power and grow at an ever-increasing rate.

The logical culmination will be a Soviet-style central government overseeing and regulating every aspect of our lives.

In 1948, George Orwell wrote a masterpiece: 1984. Sixty years later, in 2008, we love Big Brother more than ever.

The "conservative" presidential candidate is the one who is willing and anxious to cut departments, programs, laws, grants, and subsidies from the Federal behemoth.

A "conservative" would be willing and anxious to let individuals, cities and states re-assume the powers that are historically (and Constitutionally) not part of the Federal domain.

Each of the four major presidential contenders is in favor of increasing the size and scope of the Federal Government. None is a "conservative." Long live Big Brother--MK--

You can make a case that the Feds should stay out. Not the States and locals. These things are under their purview.

Sir Michael
I can't speak for SJ Doc, of course, but my issue is the growth of the federal government, as you suggested. That is the true conservative position, as you stated.

Others here think the federal government should be limited in scope...except to do the things they want it to do. Then, the sky's the limit!! Then they wonder why the government uses its massive power against their values.

Not exactly right....I've been a Huck supporter since mid November, long before it was just "him and McCain", his immigration stance has been the same since then. Personally, I think he has the best plan out there. He has the support of the founder of the minutemen and also Duncan Hunter, both very anti-illegal. I doubt if he could have gotten their support if he was a push over for illegals.

Are there things in his past as a Governor that I don't agree with? Sure.... BUT I find alot more that I do agree with than what I don't.

And I know one other thing, the GOP as we remember it is dead, it died the day that we as conservatives let the MSM pick our nominee for us.

Sir Michael - See the 14th Amendment
--
Says Sir Michael:

"You can make a case that the Feds should stay out. Not the States and locals. These things are under their purview."

One of the few very real Extremely Good Things ever done by the Republican Party was the 14th Amendment.

In an odd kind of way, each American holds a kind of dual citizenship. You are a citizen of these United States and a citizen of that one of the several states (or districts, or commonealths, or territories) in which you reside.

What the 14th Amendment was enacted (and duly, lawfully ratified) to provide was the resolution of a conflict situation in which local or state governments acted to violate those of its citizens' rights which were held inviolate as federal citizens' rights by the Constitution.

Notably the right of emancipated Negro slaves to keep and bear arms.

In essence, the 14th Amendment slams down "the chains of the Constitution" upon local tyrants as well as upon the Beltway Buccaneers.

Along the same line, a New York City resident can (and should, if the poor dumb schmuck weren't a New Yorker and therefore unworthy of life itself) argue that the ancient and reekingly feculent Sullivan Law is a direct and criminal violation of the 2nd Amendment, and any city official attempting to enforce it should be arrested, charged, and indicted in the nearest handy federal court.

Think of it as the proper role of the federal government. Remember, its officers are charged with defending the Constitution against all "enemies, foreign or domestic," and doesn't a state government bent upon violating my rights as a U.S. citizen constitute a *PERFECT* example of a criminal conspiracy in arrogant and total enmity against the Constitution of these United States?

Wouldn't I just *LOVE* to see the 101st Airborne descend upon Trenton the way they hit Little Rock?

Governor Corzine, get ready for a little trip to Guantanamo.

No harm intended, but I am glad Monster called you out on being anti-Huck over gambling. How baby-out-with-the-bathwater that is.

McAmnesty is a sure loser. The RNC wants to lose this one (part of the 2-party corporate shell game).

Vote Huck, please, even just as a no-confidence vote for McCain.

Admire your passion about illegal immigration.

Curious, who do you support if not Huckabee?

Odds are, Romney, like most TH posters.

Romney was no better at immigration as a governor than Huck. They both moved to the right on this one.

I'd take either one over McAmnesty. But with Mitt out you only have Huck. Or you can take your marbles home and hand your party over to McCain, but what good does that do?

Or maybe you support Ron Paul. Even better.

But he won't get the nom, so you can vote 3rd party in November, but for the primaries please support Huck.

Thank you.

Also see Mandy Sue a few posts up. I can vouch for that. Huck has been anti-amnesty not only since November, but since June, when he railed against McCain/Kennedy like you wouldn't believe.

When asked by the National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling, "Last year, Congress voted overwhelming to criminalize most forms of Internet gambling. This year some members of Congress are promoting legislation to legalize Internet gambling. If such legislation passed, would you veto it?" [an incorrect statement, by the way], Huckabee answered "yes"!!!! No other candidate responded to the questionnaire. Helen Robertson, NCALG Administrative Director, said "Governor Huckabee expressed a strong dislike for gambling, and agreed with out positions on gambling."

Additionally, Gov. Huckabee was endorsed by prominent anti-poker activist James Dobson of Focus on the Family.

I don't think disagreeing on this is "throwing the baby out with the bathwater". Rather, this is a situation where someone pretends to be a conservative but is really a big government liberal with a Bible, like William Jennings Bryant from the last century.

Also, "Monster" didn't call me out on anything. I was very clear on my statements and he had a comment on it, one with which I disagreed.

I agree that McAmnesty will lose. I'll probably vote for him in the general election but it's fine with me if he loses. Our party is doomed to fail if it disregards small government conservatives. If it takes a few losses before the party realizes that, then so be it.

If you wish to cast a protest vote, cast it for Ron Paul. At least you'll be making a statement for true conservatism.

Sorry Chuck
Janet seems a fine lady, HOWEVER, she is not running for office. Maybe she can run in 2012.

Why not put McCain and Huckabee on the same ticket. Two immigration losers who definitely deserve each other. Another Ford/Dole ticket that would be and we can rid the GOP of both these moderates at one election. Thompson called a spade a spade when he labeled Huckabee a Liberal. Fred disappointed me with his non-run, but you have to respect the mans judgment of character.

You are too harsh with TheEngineer. There are a number of possible approaches to protect the unborn in law. An Ammendment may be the best one, but it is also the one most likely to take the longest, which means more deaths. Throwing it back to the states, that is, overturning Roe v. Wade by the Supremes saying that there is no "right" to abortion is likely to happen much sooner. Then there are States which have already outlawed abortion just as there are States which had legal abortion before Roe v. Wade.

There are different approaches with both practical and theoretical concerns. A pro-lifer is a friend, even if they support a different approach to a less complete solution.
