Will Romney Buy the White House?

Poll
Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Mitt Romney might go down in history as the presidential candidate who spent more of his personal income than any other in his pursuit to win the White House. It is estimated that he already has used $35 million of his roughly $250 million personal fortune. And if Mitt makes the cut to be the Republican nominee, during the next 10 months, he surely will surpass Ross Perot's $60 million infusion into his own 1992 candidacy. To me, such excessive self-financing of one's campaign is not only a competitive injustice that rivals the use of steroids by athletes but also a fundamental flaw in the general race for president, which requires better campaign finance reform.

Last Wednesday, Romney conveyed that his campaign was not trying to purchase television advertisement on Super Tuesday, when 20-plus states hold simultaneous nominating contests. Then he flip-flopped (again) the very next day, telling reporters, "I have authorized a seven-figure -- I won't give you the exact number -- but seven-figure advertising buy for our campaign."

As one news agency put it, "One of Romney's greatest campaign strengths has been his deep pockets. A wealthy former businessman who has largely financed his own campaign."

The BBC described that Mitt "may be the only Republican candidate who can afford to buy advertising in major media markets ahead of Tuesday's poll."

On the other hand, John McCain finished 2007 with $3 million in campaign monies and a $4.5 million debt, according to Federal Election Commission records. We just learned he was so strapped for cash at the end of last quarter that he had to take out a special life insurance policy as a guarantee for payback of his debt.

McCain's financial consultant said, "I can't imagine any other campaign doing what he did. We were down to nobody. To nothing."

The campaign question is: Does Mitt's personal financing or McCain's personal debt reflect the type of fiscal leadership we want in the White House? One avenue demonstrates that the White House can be bought, and the other mirrors a same-old political approach to getting things done: borrowing.

As I echoed in last week's column, GOP candidate and former governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee is the only presidential hopeful who is not spending recklessly or rashly.

Whatever the outcome of the presidential race, I'm admonishing citizens everywhere to write to their representatives today, beseeching them to require immediate and full disclosure of all personal and online campaign donations, as well as more equity between candidates' and supporters' contributions to campaigns. It is simply unfair to allow a wealthy man such as Mitt Romney to "loan" his own campaign $35 million-plus, when a candidate such as Mike Huckabee doesn't possess a personal fortune and only can receive $2,300 maximum from people such as you and me.

Past campaign finance reform, such as the McCain-Feingold law, restricts our First Amendment rights, among other detriments, and political action committees can weaken partisan politics. Trade unions and corporations might be prohibited from giving directly to a candidate's campaign, but soft money still sifts through the system. Equally broken, however, is campaign protocol in which a rich man possibly can pay his own way into the White House.

Where would Romney be right now if he were running on a financially level playing field with Mike Huckabee? Where would Mike be if he had the same financial empire as Mitt? If Mike beat Mitt in Iowa despite Mitt's 10-1 spending against him, Mike certainly would be winning if he could do the same in other states. If Mike is among the last four GOP candidates standing now (third in the delegate count), just think what his placement would be with a surplus of funds to battle on the airways like McCain and Romney.

As The Washington Post rightly noted, "Romney's money is his mojo: If he's not spending, he probably isn't winning."

The truth is, for Mitt, that his presidential run is the biggest investment gamble of his life. And with the White House appraising at roughly $106 million, he's betting his largest wager on owning the Oval Office.

As one appraiser calculated, "To qualify for a jumbo 30-year, fixed-rate loan at 7.5 percent, and assuming 10 percent down, the proud new owners of the 132-room house at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. would need to pull down an annual salary of at least $18 million."

Of course, that's pocket change for Mitt.

Then again, in an economic housing slump and with a possible recession on the horizon, Romney just might be able to take advantage of its owners (us) and maneuver them into a buyer's market steal.

The question is: Will we let him?

More Huckabite Demagoguery

I've had enough, and more than enough, of McCain and Huckabee and their surrogates attacking CEOs, crticising employers, dissing the free market, and trying to defeat Romney by arousing class envy.

If it weren't for Senator McCain's unconstitutional restriction of political free speech, fundraising wouldn't be the enormous and all-consuming issue it now is in presidential campaigns.

Yet VP-wannabe Huck focuses all his (increasingly ill-tempered and insulting) fire on Mitt Romney rather than criticizing the man who is, more than anybody else, responsible for the current mess.

If we end up being saddled with a McCain-Huckabee ticket, I'm one committed conservative and lifetime Republican who will, most definitely, not cast my vote for it.

Sorry Chuch...
Mitt has also faced unprecedented discrimination and bigotry over his religion. Much of his having to out-spend other candidates is because Mitt has to break down the religious barriers before people will consider him seriously as a candidate.

You also must realize that fund raising is also an integral part of any campaign. Personal fortunes aside, Mitt has still raised more funds than any other GOP candidate in this race. Shouldn't that count for something?

Any GOP candidate who expects to be a serious contender against the Democrats this fall better be good at fund-raising. (Even Mitt's fund raising is dwarfed by Obama and Hillary.)

Chuck - I like you in the movies, but I'm disappointed that you are unable to see Mitt as the conservative he is. He's not perfect...and he has certainly had to learn along the way, but he will make a fine GOP nominee and president.

EXACTLY wrong! on so much--BUT on:
"Past campaign finance reform, such as the ***McCain-Feingold*** law, ****restricts our First Amendment rights, among other detriments,***** and political action committees can weaken partisan politics."

Yeah, CHUCK!

So--why does your buddy the "Huckster" cozy up to McCain-- the AUTHOR OF THIS TRAVESTY???

NumbChuck
Go bang your pretty face on a 2x4. Everyone knows that the tactic of an empty shirt is to divert attention toward his opponent.

Huckster and Chuckster
Romney had to spend money because he didn't enjoy all the free press from the liberal media. I am tired of Huckabees class warfare garbage. I'm glad he is spending some of his own money, but you also fail to point out that Romney has also raised the most.

And
your point is?
If Huckabee were concerned about the Republic instead of going after that Mormon, and go after the real enemy of freedom, McCain maybe I'd have more respect for him and not think he's nothing but another Elmer Gantry. Huck is complaining about the God question, well he had a perfect chance when Brian Williams went after Mitt for his religion.
I'll believe Huck is serious when I see him go after McCain for Juan Hernandez, his lies on immigration, why he spiked the MIA/POW report; why he reduced to tears the sister of a pow in a Senate hearing. Otherwise, he's nothing but a McCain stooge..and I'm an evangelical Huck.

Dilemma for Conservative Huck Supporters
McCain:
1. Opposes federal marriage amendment; Romney/Huck favor it.
2. McCain-Kennedy
3. McCain-Feingold
4. McCain-Kennedy-Edwards
5. McCain-Lieberman (including a new $0.50/gallon gas tax to fight global warming???? WTF????)
6. Opposes Guantanamo Bay...let's bring terrorists here and give them constitutional rights
7. Philosophy of bigger government & higher taxes

This is far from conservative. That's why conservatives don't like McCain.

Let's face it...Huck isn't seriously competing in even 1/4 of the states right now..and even those are all close races. In just the winner-take-all states alone, McCain will likely have over 300 more delegates on 2/5. McCain & Romney will split CA's 173 delegates. McCain doesn't have a single state where he polls under 20%, so he will likely have a very strong day tomorrow and end the day anywhere between 500 & 800 total delegates.

Huckabee's absolute best-case scenario will be to bring his 29-delegate total to somewhere around 250 (realistically he probably hits 183.) This means Huck's only shot at the nomination will be to win 100% of the votes in all post-February-5 states. Probability = 0. There is no way Huckabee can win.

Romney polls well in most of the 2/5 states, and will likely win MT, CO, MA, ND, CA, UT, and possibly more. Two of those are winner-take-all states. Romney's worst-case 2/5 scenario puts him at about 320 total delegates, but for him to hit 400-500 total delegates tomorrow is certainly not unreasonable by any means. If neither Huckabee nor Romney break 400 total delegates tomorrow, it is highly unlikely either of them can win (because each must then win over 791 [nearly 80%] of the remaining 1008 delegates to secure the nomination.)

Huckabee Supporters: Choose carefully. If you like McCain, your vote for Huck is okay...but since most of you are conservatives who hate McCain...you need to think this through.

whining
What is Chuck Norris whining about?

Huck has million of supporters. It is not Romney's fault if Huck passes the plate and few donate.

McCain has 25 years of MSM exposure. He is the darling of the media. McCain has money (his wife's) let him finance his own campaign. If he can't raise money then maybe few have faith in him or want him as President. Obama sure out raised him.

Romney gets attacked from all sides. Romney has lead by example. He is not asking any of us to do more than he has done. He as also gotten a lot more donations out of lower poll numbers than everyone except Ron Paul. The Romney supporters believe. He is one of us. Not some fake conservative.

There is a big difference. Huck gets Norris to campaign for him and do his dirty work for free.

Romney invests in the future of the Republican Party and it costs him.

Chuck come on man!
So its wrong that Mitt has made money? Little class warfare here? I thought you were above that but you sound an aweful lot like a Democrat right now. Normally you come of as fair and level headed but this is a side I have not seen before.

I respect the fact that you like Huck. But you really should respect that Mitt has raised more money than anybody else and is also putting his own money where his mouth is... money which he has earned. All the guys and gals running this year are rich but only Mitt is willing to sacrifice.

Wish you only the best Chuck!

Can Anyone Be a Columnist on Townhall?
Hey Jon Garthwaite, since when does Chuck Norris get his own column on Townhall? If it's anti-Romney, ole' Johnny will make room for it no matter how pathethic it is apparently.

This article is the biggest class envy piece I have ever seen, but when you are as desperate as Mike Huckabee is, just send out Chuck Norris to cry "He has too much money, that's not fair."

What a crybaby waa!

Hey, chuck, go sell some more Total Gym's and give the proceeds to your class envy partner Huck.

Jealousy
Chuck and Huck are jealous - Romney has it all! He built/created his Empire as a prouct of his hardwork, intelligence, perseverance, dedication, and a special gifted talent. He didn't manipulate people to give him money for his campaign. He has to suffer such mean criticisms from detractors who are just jealous of his accomplishments.

Go Romney for President!!! Win or lose, we support you all the way!!!

Where would Huckabee be if?
Hey Chuck, there sure are alot of "what if's" in your article. Try this one on for size. What if Huckabee and McCain hadn't entered into an unholy alliance and cut a deal just before the Iowa caucus. They both tag teamed Romney complaining about his attack (comparison) ads instead of explain what the supposed lies were. No doubt it was terrific political maneuvering that worked. Romney runs ads that start off praising Huckabee and McCain then contrast differences in policy; Huckabee and McCain personally attack Romney and successfully paint Romney as the villain with the aid of the media.
So rather than Huckabee winning big in Iowa like he did, it would have been alot closer or possibly a win for Romney. McCain would have lost New Hampshire and would be out today. Even if Huckabee would have eeked out a win in South Carolina he wouldn't be any better off than he is today after losing to Romney and Guliani in Florida. So Chuck, take heart in knowing that even if McCain doesn't follow through on giving the VP or cabinet position to Huckabee, at least he'll be able to earn alot more money on the speaking circuit which is probably the reason he decided to run in the first place.

Chuck, are you sure
that maybe you are the one who is "too old" (meaning the thought processes?) No insult intended, but this column was terrible.
Of course you are entitled to your opinion, but based on the posts so far, TH readers are going to tell you theirs (which appear to be disagreeing with yours.)

As for "economic housing slump" and "recession on the horizon" please! The housing situation is a direct consequence of poor lending practices by predatory lenders giving loans to people who should never have been approved. Trying to connect Romney to this line of logic is pathetic.

Mike Huckabee is the best candidate
Dennis Prager encouraged voters in both parties to vote for the best. Clearly, Mike Huckabee IS the finest candidate Republicans have in this race. You can learn more about where he stands on the issues at mikehuckabee.com

Hey Chucklehead
I used to repsect you as a good actor. No more. Now that I see you acting as a stooge for a two bit religious bigot, who's staying in a race he can't possibly win only to keep a member of my religion(Mormon) from having a chance to win our parties nomination, I have NO respect for you at all.

Go back to playing a cheap dime store Texas Ranger on TV and leave politics to the people who are qualified. And take Huckleberry Mike with you.

Nancy you're on drugs
Huckabee is a two bit religious bigot who's staying in the race only to be a spolier for an "evil" Mormon.
He hasn't got a chance of winning the nomination and he knows it.

Chuck Norris has demeaned himself to help that Bozo and I hope his career suffers for it.

What's wrong with spending your own mone
Chuck, I've always admired you for your talent and success in life, but I've never envied you. I find myself now admiring Romney because of his success and talent, but I don't envy him. Some people do extraordinary things and I think it's great to be able look to their examples. Envy is destructive, that's why God said thou shalt not covet. Mike should know that on account of he was a preacher.

Class warfare is beneath conservatives
McCain Feingold ensures that only the rich can run for office. So instead of bitching about Romney's deep pockets, give McCain his share of the blame. Cut it out with the McCain ManLove fest.

Chuck...
If it were possible to buy the White House, then Steve Forbes would've been prez at one time. He wasn't.
If it were possible to buy the White House, Huckabee would do it in a heart beat. He's doing his best to be assured of a position in the new administration by being a spoiler right now. Sleazy.

McCain married into money
What's honorable about that? At least Mitt made his money legitimately. He has also raised the most money in this campaign.

Barack Obama raised a record amount of money last month. How will a republican face the Dems in a general election on a shoestring budgets?

It may seem unfair....but
If someone has the means, then more power to them. Mitt was obviously successful in business. People like him that get an education and work hard can profit and make a very comfortable living. It's the liberal left who feel "profit" and "wealth" should be dirty words. Capitalism is one of the foundations of this country. It's HIS money. He should decide how to spend it, whether it be on a campaign or a new house.

If a candidate is inspiring, motivational, and can find a way to connect with millions of others, he/she won't need a lot of money to gain support.

Chuck
I enjoy your movies, but I can see you for miles on this one. Please, Chuck, it's McCain who messed up everything for others. Can't you see the writings on the wall? Try to get your buddy to back Mitt Romney and that will be a plus for the Christian USA. You have too many 'ifs' and 'buts' and you sound more like a defeated warrior who is begging for life. There is life but not for Mike at this time. He needs to get out of that false pride and ego, but then he loves McCain too much to let go.

Chuck, this is beneath you :-(
Chuck,

As a fellow brother in Christ, I respect you very much, but I found your harsh, envy-tinged words against Mitt Romney very saddening, especially when the author of the very problems you cite, the author of the MCCAIN-Feingold campaign finance law, merits hardly a mention from you.

I pray that you are not simply attacking Mitt, and sparing a man who is just as rich, thanks to his wife's inheritance, because of instructions from the Huckabee campaign to say nothing ill of McCain, because perhaps Huckabee is angling for VP or some other favor from the Senator.

Please, Chuck, do the right thing, and stop attacking Mitt Romney; he is NOT the enemy. The GOP ESTABLISHMENT, those elitists who look down on Bible-believing Christians as 'agents of intolerance', as McCain has labelled us, they, the ESTABLISHMENT, are the TRUE ENEMY of conservatives; it always has been so, and, sadly, it always will be so.

did chuck quote the " BBC" ?
Im losing my fondess of old martial arts movies especially the ones with chuck in them.

Its extremely hard to avoid personaly attacks when the so called celebs make it so needing to their lame statements and in this case short story.

Is this Hucks idea of getting everyone in america to stop looking at his spoil tank job for vice president ?

I liked hucks message , in fact I wrote his email hoping to get a decent answer as to why in the first time in american political races huck in 3rd is only attacking Romney in second place ???????????? clearly he is going for spoiler and to collect on what ever promises mcAmnesty has promised or hinted towards. The joke is McAmnesty will probably end up screwing Huckster and pick someone else to his ticket.

so Chuck , your issue is Mitt spending his own money to run for president ? If you want something badly enough and you think you can make a change that spending your own money is somehow bad ? You would rather have someone who owes huge favors to ? Amazing you have amassed great wealth yourself and it seems it was very much due to a over priced chinese made health equipment.

Great point Eli !
thats funny i was thinking that as well , we have known that townhall is kinda in the tank for certain people willing to write seriouly poor "articles"

I wrote to townhall editors asking them to post a open email /question about conservatives creating a 3rd party and asking what would be the pros or cons of doing so and asking that they ask the real political pro writers on here as well . I didnt even get a darn response , not even a heck no your crazy.

But ole chuckie who writes up a class war fare article gets a front page link and heck he even has a townhall.com ish picture of himself

come on townhall.com explain I had a real question for all of us and yet no link , no front page , no email writing me back saying anything ?

The largest issue of how we act or dont act in leaving the GOP party and cant even get a link

shame on townhall.com

Great point again Eli

Chuck
I gave you a 1 and I didn't bother to read your Huckleberry blather. Your candidate should have dropped out long ago so that real conservatives would have had a chance.

Yes, I blame your lying weasel of a candidate for McLame getting to the top.

How much did George Soros give to your man?

Chuck
Your movies are okay, your politics suck. Huckleberry is just another weak-kneed Jimmy Carter open borders advocate. No thanks. The Huckster's ACTIONS speak far louder than his words.

But Chuck, feel free to swing by a CONSERVATIVE blog!

So this is what
conservatism has come to? Class warfare, liberal candidates passing themselves off as conservative, and populist nonsense? How about this Chuck - Romney doesn't have the luxury of Hollywood campaigning for him. I don't care if Mitt is spending his own money. At least he's worked his butt off campaigning while Huckaphony whines and has his Hollywood surrogates whine for him. No, he doesn't get invited onto the Daily Show, or to play bass on the Tonight Show.

You want to play the flip-flop game Chuck? What about Huckaphony's flip-flop on taxation? Wasn't his discovery of the FairTax after raising taxes in AR just political expediency? Didn't it just provide cover for his undesirable tax-raising past? What his come-to-Jesus moment with regards to securing the borders? Isn't that a monumental flip-flop?

Nice try. Next...

No To McCainabee
So we shouldn't vote for Romney because he knows how to make money? C'mon, quit whining. If your boy doesn't like the rules tell him to ask his buddy McCain, to get right on it.

Hawk said: Huckabee Supporters: Choose carefully. If you like McCain, your vote for Huck is okay...but since most of you are conservatives who hate McCain...you need to think this through.

Hawk is so right. That goes for Fred Thompson supporters, too. Don't cast a protest vote for him and his delegates or those may wind up going to McCain.

And conservatives, if McCain gets the nom, you know you can show your disapproval for those who came out for him publicly by not contributing to the RNC or campaigns in other Republican races. I suggest every time you get a request for a contribution, mail back a photo of McCain with a big "NO!" written on it. They think we're all going to fold, eventually. Show them they're wrong.

Marine's Dad
Your post at 0406 was perfect. I wouldn't vote for the Huckster for dogcatcher.

Mitt Romney vs Mark Warner

Dear Mr Norris,

I appreciate you slugging it out in the minefield of political rhetoric however class warfare is a troublesome thing and I believe Huckabee is taking advantage of a cycle that already creates an opportunity to exploit the weakness of humanity through the politics of envy and distrust of a successful business man like Romney.

Romney has a track record of other successes in both the private and public sector. That should give rise to the hope and belief that he could actually do someting effective to address entitlements, the IRS, auditing of government contracts and a host of other truculant problems that we need resolved yesterday.

In my state we have to contend with a "successful" businessman named Mark Warner (D) who while a Governor did nothing but buy the election, increase our taxation and sit on his hands, doing little to improve the functionality of Virginia government.

The differences are remarkable. I can only hope that when the time comes you encourage Huckabee to unite the Republicans who support him behind that candidate that emerges victorous.

I also hope that you continue to be involved in the conservative movement when the dust settles from the primary.

Chuck Norris on Huckabee
Chuck,

I bought into this, "help the little guy" scenario initially, but then I listened more closely and watched Huckabee pandering to voters.
Sorry, but I don't buy it any more.

Mitt Romney earned his money through his own efforts and he has been willing to spend this money he earned to have "the humbling honor" of being considered for President. He has had my vote.

Ciak

History repeating
If they hated Jesus for speaking the truth, why wouldn't you get ripped here? Jesus said his followers would be hated as well. Honestly, this site is full of those who have "crept in unnoticed" as Jude put it. Praise the Lord for giving this Nation a choice like Mike, and as always, as a Nation, we will reap what we sow. Over 4,000 abortions every day, and who are most pro-life groups supporting? Not Romney!

Ridiculous...
I've sent several donations to Romney. I hope I can help him "buy" the Whitehouse. Mike Huckabee is a terrible witness for Christianity. YOU are supporting a loser, Mr. Norris. Why don't you "buy" the Whitehouse for Hucka.

infomercials
Instead of peddling junk exercise equipment at highly inflated cost for the junk, Chuck might try to make money fairly. Selling junk on infomercials and Hollywood paychecks. And supports a RINO. I also will vote Romney, and likely will not mark my ballot for POTUS if McCain is on there. He is not very different from Francois Kerry in his military record, other than actually supporting the troops.

Buying the White House?
Hey, famous actor Chuck Norris who endorses a candidate...there are more kinds of political capital available to buy a campaign than money.

Ahem.

Buying the Whitehouse
Yeah, all that spending is pretty bad, almost as bad as using a washed-up movie star to promote your campaign.
I used to like you Chuck, back when you kept your mouth shut and your legs roundhouse kicking schmoes in the face. You've changed man...you've changed

Mrs Sullivan
"Over 4,000 abortions every day, and who are most pro-life groups supporting? Not Romney!"

Actually the Massachusetts Citizens for Life gave Romney a 100% rating for his record as governor. Despite Romney's past leanings of protecting a woman's right to choose, he consistently came down on the side of life every time while serving as governor.

Don't forget, the $50 copay for abortions in Massachusetts (which Huckabee & McCain dishonestly attribute to Mitt) was put in by the Massachusetts Supreme Court...it had nothing to do with Mitt.

Mitt has a solid pro-life record, and he supports a federal marriage amendment (which McCain does not.)

Huckabee has no chance of winning...it is very possible that today he does not even win a single state (other than Arkansas.)

Consider:
1. McCain Lieberman (including a $0.50/gallon gas tax to fight global warming.)
2. McCain-Kennedy
3. McCain-Kennedy-Edwards
4. McCain-Feingold
5. McCain's opposition to Bush Tax cuts
6. McCain's opposition to Guantanamo Bay

Conservative Huck supporters: Vote Carefully.

kicked in the head
I think it is clear that Chuck has been kicked in the head one too many times.

ON another note.

Chuck Norris' calendar goes straight from March 31st to April 2nd; no one fools Chuck Norris.

Stacked Deck
One poster commented that Romney has raised more money than anyone else, but that's hyperbole, not fact. And, in any case, it doesn't look like he's going to buy anything. McCain is clearly up in New York, New Jersey, Arizona, Connecticutt, Illionois, and Minnesota, and leads in Alabama, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Missouri, where his competitor is Huckabee - not Romney. That's 10 states. Further, it should be perfectly clear from Huckabee's statements that if it comes down to the wire - he'll support McCain - not Romney. Romney leads only in Utah & Massachusetts, may have a lead in California, is tied with McCain in Georgia, and will win Colorado and Maine. Then there are a handful of small states such as Arkansas, West Virginia, Montana, Alaska, N. Dakota and Delaware where no polls have been taken. Since California is a proportional state, and Colorado and Maine are delegate states, McCain will still get delegates, while sweeping almost all the winner-take-all states. We'll see today, but tomorrow, the betting is that McCain will be too far out in front for Romney to have a chance. The deck is stacked.

stop whining Chuck
McCain and Huckabee have both been involved in financial scandals (as one of the Keating Five McCain tried to interfere in a government investigation of a campaign donor, while Huckabee has notably failed to cooperate with investigations of his misuse of campaign funds and for siphoning money from a nonprofit entity.)

While Romney is relatively wealthy, at least he made his fortune outside of politics and has not enriched himself on public money. He donated his entire salary to charity as governor of MA. While Huckabee has called Romney "dishonorable", he has proven his integrity in how he has managed both his personal and public life, and in particular his finances.

Preventing Romney from donating his own money to his campaign would be an unambiguous violation of his First Amendment rights. If you are unhappy that you are limited in how much you can donate to Huckabee and McCain's campaign, you should take that up with McCain since he is the author of the legislation that restricted campaign donations. It is also worth noting that Romney has raised more donations than McCain and Huckabee. He is trying to win the race, and how can he solicit campaign donations from others if he is not willing to sacrifice his own wealth as well? I think it is commendable he is willing to put his money where his mouth is.

Chuck should stop whining. It is unmanly and unbecoming. He has become a shrill voice in this campaign, going from a classy endorsement of Huckabee to seething attacks on Romney. He has publicly soiled himself with rhetoric that is spiteful and shallow.

Go back to Hollywood,Chuck!...
...where you and George Clooney are considered "intellectuals".

Maybe Jonothan Garthwaite could get that other Hollywood intelectual,Mickey Mouse,to write a political column.Couldn't be any worse.

And I didn't like your movies, either. Here is a list of Chuck Norris's Oscars:

Any questions?

Frontrunner Romney?
Maybe Mr. Norris can explain why the Huckabee camp continuously attacks Romney when McCain is said to be in command of the nomination?

Is Huckabee McCain's stooge? A better analysis would be "Why Has McCain Been Annointed By The Liberal Media?"

I don't know how Repubs operate, but most conservatives do not covet thy neighbor's wealth. We usually try to learn how to be productive ourselves so we can improve life for our families. Jealousy of other families can lead to attempted theft. Conservatives believe in earning, not taking.

Hey Chuck

You can thank your candidates man-crush McShame for the fact that you can't run a successful campaign without being a multi-millionare anymore. GET A F-ING CLUE!!!!

CHUCK-----GET A LIFE!
FIRST---ROMNEY IS NOT BUYING THE WHIEHOUSE.

THIRD---YOU AND HUCK ARE CRY BABIES

FOURTH----GET A LIFE AND GET OUT OF THE WAY

FIFTH---HUCK IS ALLOWING HIMSLEF TO BE USED

SIXTH----MCCAIN WILL NOT REWARD HIM

SEVENTH--- GO AWAY!

SHAME!
This column is sleaze of the lowest form. Shame on Townhall for even making room for this shallow, fact-free cheapshot.

BTW, what is the net worth of the estimable Mr. Norris?

The Fist Behind the Chin
Gimme a break, Chuck. If Huckabee were any sort of business man and knew how to make ten cents into billions, I'm sure your candidate would be spending up the wazoo to stay alive.

Face it, Romney knows finance, he knows how to be a success and he's had experiences launching dozens of vastly popular companies before he got into public office. Huckabee and McCain never even ventured a lemonade stand.

I also don't care if McCain served in Vietnam, no offense to our military. We're dealing with a much different global enemy, first of all. Secondly, I know plenty of people who have served valiantly and bravely, but I wouldn't trust them to house sit my cat.

Today the polls will tell what's to come. I am voting for Mitt, and I have my worries he won't make it. You should've told your horse to go back to the stables. He has no chance.

Obtuse, tedious and obvious..
The only thing sadder than Chuck Norris writing that article is it seeing the light of day. Just who was it at Town Hall that signed off on that tripe?

It's About Freedom
The reason Mitt Romney has his own personal wealth to spend on his campaign is because he was an excellent business man and earned it. It is not a sin to have wealth or to use it. We all have the same opportunity to run for president, whether we have the money to buy advertising is up to God and our hard work and good planning. The last thing we need is MORE laws and restrictions to "level out" the playing field! Stop playing class warfare games! It sounds just like the liberal democrats.

Evangelicals versus Mormons?
Mr. Norris knows how to pick just the right fight. Note that he does not address one issue of principle. He just sees more evangelicals than Mormons in the country, and pouts that Romney isn't playing fair because he's reaching out to other conservatives.

For a street-fighter, that makes perfect sense. You don't disarm your opponent by quoting natural law precepts, you want to outnumber your opponents.

But Chuck's upset that Romney (whom I do not support) can pay to get his message out to non-Mormons, while Huckabee doesn't have to pay to reach evangelicals. "Hey, play fair! Go broke!"

The salient difference is, Romney might win. Huckabee never will, even if he had Romney's money.

Who hurts Who?
For what it's worth, for those Romney supporters who claim that Huckabee is hurting Romney, the same holds true for Huckabee supporters who believe that Romney is hurting them. If Romney weren't in the race in states like Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia, they have a legitimate claim to say that their candidate would beat McCain. So, argue on. In the meantime, 21 states vote today - and other than the arguments of partisans downstream, much of this will evaporate.

Class warfare ninja
I used to think Chuck Norris was a smart guy... boy was I wrong. He's proven to be the Alec Baldwin of the Republican party. His reference to Perot was ironic, he and his fellow Hucksters have split the conservative vote because of their stupidity and we will be rewarded with another Clinton. Deja vou all over again!

Same-old same-old whinning
C'mon... Huckabee and his sidekick Chuck Norris sound pathetic with their complaint that Romney wants to buy the White House. At least Romney made his fortune by his hard work and intellingence, not by passing a plate to collect donations. That is why millions rally around him: People are attracted to industrious, intelligent people, not to plate passers like Huckabee.

I have always respected Michael Medved, but seeing how he has expressed himself about Romney while putting Huckabee on pedestal while supporting McCain, it makes the perfect case for one of those "Full Moon Conspiracies," only this time Medved himself is in! Sorry, Michael, I won't be tuning in any more.

I'm reminded
how the Kennedy fortune, combined with Mayor Daley's votes from the Chicago and Cook County cemeterys, put JFK in office. It wasn't fair then and it ain't fair now, Chuck. But that's politics when you get to the big leagues.

Mrs. Sullivan
Sorry, But Huckary need to start wearing out the rug with his knees and ask God for forgiveness and maybe Chuckary also. He has done nothing more than attack others and draw away votes in a race he knows he can not win. And by doing so, has helped out his liberal pal, McQuack. But, he does remind me of why I gave up on church (not God). And that is the fact that the preachers need to practice more of what they preach, and quit the lying and badmouthing others. It is called being a hypocrite!
It is up to 69 and that's 67 and 2 for. LOL

No.
But Romney would have dropped out of the race a long time ago, if he had to campaign based mostly on the strength of his message and his own personal appeal. Unlike Huckabee, his message did NOT catch on of its own merits. It's taken him millions of dollars to get to about 25% in the public opinion polls, against McCain and Huckabee who have been able to sell their OWN candidacies more on their merits.

That should tell you that Romney's message isn't selling well.

"Exit, Stage Left"
When I first embarked on attempting to find some wisdom in this philosophical regurgitation, I had at least hoped to hear Mr. Norris expound upon something believable. Alas, I do err in surmising that he could understand that his so-called celebrity status only has meaning when he is portraying nonexistent entities.

It is amazing just how gullible some people are when it comes to stepping outside of the areas in which they are credible. In this case, Mr. Norris you have been the author of one of the dumbest attempts at misinformation and demagoguery I have ever witnessed. I do believe it is the first time I have ever laughed uncontrollably at anything you have ever produced through your credible means of notoriety.

I must say you will never again find me as part of your audience since I have little regard for those who should have left the stage while the audience was still civil. You, sir, have lost all sense of reality in attempting to portray Mr. Huckabee as being the quintessential underdog in this campaign by simply blaming it on the fact that Mitt Romney has more money.

If you want to do something useful and noble, support Ron Paul.

It's a problem, Chuck
Since the trailer park vote is mostly Democratic, your man Huck has to rely on the redneck trailer park vote, which plays well in the south and parts of the midwest, but is too small a constituency for a presidential run.

Huck never attacks Mormonism
Romney bloggers/commenters alway bring up this supposed attack but let's call it for what it is... really just a ploy to keep negatives associated with Huckabee.

Huckabee even said on national TV that Romney's religion should not be a consideration for voters.

Romney camp is about mischaracterizations and spin. Stop the puppet show folks. Vote Huckabee.

Romney Camp/Huckabee Camp
Romney camp
- 20 times the money
- owns the airwaves
- violent attacks on blogs and comments
- more polarization and paralyzation
- Puppet show

Huckabee Camp
- Better message
- Better ethics
- More civil
- Healing for our country
- Freedom from the puppet show

Well SteveL,
I think we will see different numbers when people such as me, who have decided to hold our nose and vote for the less of three liberals, get into the act. And they head over to Mitt's side. (less of a liberal than Huckary or McQuack but better than billary)

Chuck Norris
Here's a little tip about Conservatism since you've obviously demonstrated you need help.

CLASS WARFARE IS NOT CONSERVATIVE

Therefore, Huckabee and McCain are not Conservatives. End of story.

The Walker I know
wouldn't have written this drivel. His handlers obviously wrote this, now if someone only read it to him as well. What happened to the Walker that would tell the truth? That wouldn't partake in disgusting class warfare? this was the Walker i knew and loved: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdsTUcuD7YA

Seriously though, when did it become fashionable for conservatives to hate those who have succeeded in life?

Huckabee sucks
Huckabee scores a d- as far as Republican candidates go.
Chuck Norris's hairpiece scores an F- as far as hairpieces go.
Huckabee is a turd and Chucky also is a loud mouth idiot.
Huck and Chuck should close their collective pieholes and go home.
Good day!

Enough of this Petty Class Envy
Chuck Norris asks if we want a president like Mitt Romney who spends so much money "trying to buy the presidency." I would like to ask if we want a president like Mike Huckabee (whom Norris outspokenly supports and who has also made the same old tired accusation about buying the presidency)who moans, groans, complains and does his best to envourage class envy and jealousy for financial success.

Enough of this garbage. I feel like I'm listening to liberal Democrats every time Huckabee and his ilk compplain about Mitt Romney spending so much money on his campaign. Well Huckster and Norris, etc., read my lips. Romney did what conservative Republicans encourage -- he worked hard and earned it! His father, George Romney, did the same thing -- he earned it. George Romney grew up in poverty but went on to do great things. Mitt Romney watched and learned from his father.

So, enough of trying to encourage jealousy and class envy -- that's so Clintonesque. And as for Chuck Norris. Chuck, shut up and go back to your mediocre acting. I'm tired of liberal Democrat campaign tactics by supposed conservative Republicans.

Romney camp violent angry crowd.
I guess if you don't have a real arguement you revert to name calling and throwing stones like th candidate you support....

Romney has proven that he will say/do/promise anything to get your vote. How can people put trust in a man like this?

I am a lifelong hunter… No hunting license pre-2007
I regret not having served in the military… Do/did any of his sons serve in the military?
Read my lips… I am pro choice (I mean pro life)

Romney is a chameleon. If it weren’t for his money and influence he would never be in this race.

Get real people. Mike Huckabee is the better choice.
http://www.mikehuckabee.com

Think USSR!
Doesn’t the ability to buy the election, buy the airwaves, and suppress a viable candidate’s message sound like the USSR?

Don’t let this happen people!

http://www.mikehuckabee.com

Stop whining
What a little wimp. I thought Chuck was supposed to be tough, but all he ever does is whine about how it's not fair. Huckabee has benefited from an extraordinary amount of positive free press which Romney did not receive. Huckabee played his religion card to no end in Iowa. Where was Chuck complaining about how Huckabee should level the playing field and not try to inject religion into the Iowa McCain constantly plays his military card. You use what you have available to win the race. Nobody really knew about Romney and so he has had to spend the money on advertisements. And he has never attacked Huckabee or McCain personally. He has attacked their positions but not them. However, I have seen ads from both Huckabee and McCain which call Romney a liar, a phony, dishonest, etc. These are all personal attacks. And lastly, Romney never said he wasn't money on ads. That was reported by some third party. I looked and did not see any actual statement from Romney on that. Romney then came out and said that wasn't true and that he is spending money. To correct someone else's error is not a flip-flop.

No Way
No way a rational person could even think of voting for Huck. Of all the Republican candidates, Huck is by far the most dishonest. And that is saying a lot when you consider the lies McCain has been throwing around lately.

A real arguement?
>Bain Capital's purchase of Clearchannel Communications in Nov 2006 which basically enables Romney to own the airwaves.<

This ranks as one of the all time most ignorant statements in this forum. The merger hasn't even taken place yet.

>Clear Channel Communications, Inc., a global leader in the radio broadcasting and out-of-home advertising industries, announced today that it has, in accordance with the terms of the merger agreement providing for the acquisition of Clear Channel by CC Media Holdings, Inc., a corporation formed by private equity funds sponsored by Bain Capital Partners, LLC and Thomas H. Lee Partners, L.P., extended to June 12, 2008, the date on which a party may terminate the merger agreement if the merger has not occurred as of that date.<

A Fine Tradition
Bill and Hillary sold the White House, what's wrong with buying it. At least Mitt is using his own money. You don't have to worry about this type of thing happening in the future. The next incarnation of McCain-Feingold will be to make using you own money in a campaign illegal.

We should only allow public financing of campaigns. That will keep out the riff-raff and guarantee that only professional politicians get elected. We can't take a chance that amateurs will get in and ruin the gravy train.

LBJ in '08'

Where would Romney Be?
The real questions are:
Where would Romney be without Huckabee's legion of bigoted misinformed illiterate unscrupulous lying anti-mormon fanatics????

Where would Huckabee be without the questionable use of tax exempt churches for his political gain?

Why would Huckabee spoil the election for real conservatives? Does he really think he has a shot at VP? What will Huckabee do when McCain passes over him in his choice for a running mate?

Get Real...
So... I never knew about Huckabee until September. Huckabee has a night-and-day better message than Romney.

Think a $100 million investment of his own money plus BIG $$$ backing of his financial friends won't require some ROI?

Romney and his backers are the puppeteers here & Clear Channel talking heads like Hannity, Rush, Hugh, etc. are their strings. You folks out there are koolaid drinking puppets.

If he gets elected he will definitely be beholden to his backers. Who is Huckabee beholden to? WE THE PEOPLE.

Romney = Robme of Rmoney.

Not too late. Cut the strings and go for the best in class for the nation.

spending rashly and recklessly?
It is not "spending rashly and recklessly" if you have it!When you go into debt, that is spending "rashly and recklessly."
Why are we talking about fair, Mr. Norris? I don't begrudge you having more money than I do because you earned them. Why do you then begrudge Mr. Romney's resources because your candidate doens't have it. Mr. Romeny earned it the American way? Anything wrong with that?

Will Chuck Norris ...
... buy the Huckster? We already know the influence that money has on Arkansas politicians!

Message? What message?
For SteveL: I don't think anyone is buying either Huckabee or McCain's message---what is that message anyway?

Evangelacals vote for Huckabee because he's one of them. McCain has name recognition, his only message is that he's a POW. No one listens to real messages, if they did they would vote for Romney.

Huckabee is a jealous, vindictive sleeze, only staying in to help McCain.

It is not money that buys the White House, it is the MSM. Which is part and parcel of the awe-struck idolatry of Hollywood and TV land---Norris, Oprah, et.al. If they hear it on TV they believe it, if a celebrity says it, it must be true.

Romney is the most qualified, energetic and genuinely good person to ever run for the office.
I quess he's just too good for us.

Here we go again.
Didn’t Huckabee win against Romney in Iowa? Didn’t McCain win New Hampshire, South Carolina and Florida? If money is the driving force, how can this be explained? And how do we explain big money losers like Ross Perot, Steve Forbes and John Edwards?

The fact is there are a whole range of characteristics which historically help candidates even though they may have no bearing on his ability to be president. These include: money, good looks (JFK had both), charisma (Clinton), height, humor, name recognition and gender, just to name a few. Shall we figure out a way to eliminate all of these advantages as well? Maybe we should legislate that all candidates be the same height, gender and number on the attractiveness scale. And how about the biggest advantage of all, media attention? It’s free to the candidate but the value is immeasurable. And Huckabee has been a huge benefactor of free media attention. Is that fair?

As we saw with McCain-Feingold, people will always find a way to work around any restrictions. All it changes is who gets the ‘unfair’ advantage. That’s still not fair.

And speaking of unfair… How many people, even just here at TH, have been writing insightful commentary for years, without ever having a featured post like Chuck Norris? Do you think maybe your celebrity status gave you an unfair advantage in being able to express your opinion in a way that guarantees an audience? Maybe we should have some rules about that too.

Macho Man = Mental Midget
Chuck, get a life! So Romney wants to spend his own money instead of taxpayer money or special interest funds from 527 sources. (Do you know what that is Chuck?) Awhile back many were hoping Mayor Bloomberg would get into this race, he has more money than Romney, I didn’t hear any grousing about him potentially “buying the election”!
We need a strong intelligent candidate to take lead of the Republican party this year, and your boy Huck doesn’t measure up, he’s a phony holy-roller who wants people to vote for him because he’s a “regular guy”. Personally, I’m not going to the polls to elect a poker buddy, I want someone with the intellectual and practical knowledge needed to stand up for this country in the face of both our enemies and sometimes even our so called friends. Huckabee is just a shill for McCain, the intellectual genius who brought us campaign finance reform; Huck is looking to ride shotgun on McCain’s band wagon and you know it! So go ahead, keep putting your Kung-Fu foot in your mouth, your only helping the Democrats win this election in the end so we can all feel the pain.

Thank goodness
For a candidate who hasn't sold his soul in the hallways of the senate...nor his vote! I'm delighted to vote for a man who is beholding to no one except his political values. All the rest play "owe-sies" and I'm amazed this hasn't been pointed out more.

Too Ironic
This column is so ironic it hurts. Because of the unconstitutional McCain-Feingold Act, only rich guys like Romney can run for president!

Norris
you sound exactly like a "class warfare" Liberal. The Republican party has always valued American entreprenuers who create jobs and profit. I'd rather Romney support his run with his money than taxpayer money!
Why don't you, Huckabee, and McVain get over your jealousy of a successful American like Romney. Oh, but I guess that as Huckabee has already said, he can't (and he claims to be a faith based leader, right).
Listen, dolt, on the eve of CA, you opened your mouth to aid McVain by energizing the "senior's vote" by using the "stick in the hornets nest" age attack on McVain, and what was that about considering your candidate Huckabee had already conceeded FL and was in GA?
You and Huckabee are too obvious in your motives.

Yt_Knight
So, do you think if you spout you ignorance on something enought times it becomes true?

Huck is looking for top of ticket.
The arguments of seeking VP are from the Romney koolaid voters guide. More spin. Too bad.

Romney camp = violent and hateful. Deep breath... relax... Fair Tax... Freedom.

How do you buy the white house?
Ebay? Does Re/max list it?

Mitt is putting his money on the line to get out his message to voters. Nothing wrong with that, the voters decide whether to put him in the white house. It is his only chance to counter-balance the free press Huckabee and McCain gets by the fawning liberal media. Quit playing the class warfare card.

P.S. A vote for Huckabee is a vote for McCain. ;) If McCain deems your religious/political views too conservative, he may just turn on you like he did on the anti-illegal immigration faction of the party. "Separation of church and state" could be the continuing interpretation of the establishment clause if McCain gets to nominate judges. He isn't going to nominate originalist/strict constructionist that may overturn McCain-Fiengold.

Mitt's Campaign Contributions
Mr. Norris,

Lets look at Mitt Romneys contributions in a different light.
He has obtained his money through his own efforts and I think all conservative people would allow him to spend it as he saw fit.
Further, I think he believes enough in himself to put his money where his mouth is.
Why is it different that you take your good name earned from many trusting citizens, donate your time and effort to who you believe to be the person we should elect.
I am angry with you that you would be critical of others for doing what they feel is best, and in my opinion, Mitt is the only conservative option we have.

Chuck Norris is Retarded
Stick to acting in B-rate shows Chuck. It's not surprising you'd line up behind the biggest simpleton in the race, Huckleberry.

Do you realize that your presence actually lead him to be taken even less seriously than he was before?
