Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Do you know what the C in YMCA stands for?

You may know it stands for “Christian,” but I wouldn’t be surprised if you didn’t. The YMCA has come far from its founders’ intent when it was organized in 1844 — so far that many people have forgotten its roots as a Christian organization established to disciple young men. Today, as John Alexander of the Danville, Illinois, YMCA says, “Unfortunately, people look at us and just see a swim and gym.”

Sadly, over the years the YMCA has redefined its original mission right out of existence. At first, the YMCA’s method of adapting itself to meet community needs looked harmless enough. They moved from what one article called “narrow evangelistic goals” to a goal of “developing the ‘whole man,’” focusing on physical and social development as well as spiritual development.

This wasn’t inherently wrong. But as YMCA staffers realized that physical development programs were becoming far more popular than Bible studies and prayer meetings, they found themselves with a choice to make. I don’t think I need to tell you how they decided.

Since it has abandoned its religious programs and focused on the physical, today’s YMCA is commonly seen as “successful” in terms of membership and revenue. But how is it successful if you fall so far short of your original goal that you end up getting rid of it entirely?

Or, as Christ would have put it, how is it successful to gain the world and lose your soul?

Thankfully, there are still those who battle for the soul of the YMCA, like my friend Dr. Jim Gills, one of America’s premier eye surgeons. Jim has given millions to fund the building of YMCAs in Florida — YMCAs that provide for faith as well as fitness. He is building one now that will have a basketball court where church services will be held on Sundays. Jim says YMCAs “aren’t just a place for people to lift weights.... They’re a place for people to go to have fulfillment.”

And at the national convention this summer, many YMCA directors and staffers spoke out about the need to “lift up the C” in “YMCA.” Some YMCAs have formed a movement for this purpose called YMCA Mission, which holds an annual “John 17:21 Conference.”

But it’s an uphill fight. At the YMCA convention, ideas like posting Bible verses on the wall or maintaining a prayer request box met with disapproval from many. Dick Blattner of the Hollywood, Florida, YMCA, complained, “I respect your religion. But when I see posters and placards on the wall that reflect Christian principles, I feel left out.... It offended me, and I don’t think it’s right for the Y.”

Only in today’s hypersensitive society could a leader in an organization with Christian in its name be offended by Christianity. But it reminds us what happens when Christians sell out our core principles and abandon our worldview for the sake of “success.” Take this as a cautionary tale and support those who are trying once again to “lift up the C” in the YMCA.

The mission of the Y
At one time they were a major missionary organization--my uncle was of one of their missionaries in 1915. In fact, some of the most effective missionaries in the first half of this century came from the YMCA program.
Couldn't tell it today, however.

"Only in today’s hypersensitive society
could a leader in an organization with Christian in its name be offended by Christianity. But it reminds us what happens when Christians sell out our core principles and abandon our worldview for the sake of 'success.'"

And there you have it.

No Child Left Behind
It makes my blood boil whenever I hear someone say, it offends me, I feel left out. Why on earth would anyone feel offended or left out. Christians welcome all. If you think about it, Christains are the one's who should feel offended, if people who are trying to be decent and good, are denied that by one's whom feel left out and offended, then what are they to do, they can't very well live to please people whom choose not to beleive in their values and morals. Principles matter to one's whom practice them, If the left out and offended one's say they respect their religion, than show respect and stop using this immature excuse to try to prevent them from their god given rights.

The- Its all About Me Crowd
I beleive I see what the problem is, I think when the adults of today, were being brought up and both parents worked, the children got left behind, fending for themselves, trying to parent themselves. This is why I beleive the so-called adult of today or kidults if you please, have very little clue's as to what parenting involves to raise up respectful and moral adults. This may well be why soiety is so messed up today, as people are making decisions and choices that are not going to bennifit society in the long haul. With a growing number of people buying the let's accept everyone and let's not discrimate against anyone, we are putting ourselves and our children in every kind of danger. To accept it all is insanity and very unhuman behavior, for to be smart and savoy, one must be aware of pending danger. Would we accept satin himself and feel at ease. No wonder their is so much voilence and crime in this day and age. Progress should not just be counted in dollars, but should also include common sense, cents. Something I see lacking in the souls of many good intended people. Lets wake up before it's too late.

What's next?
Where's the older generation complaining about the "Y". Where's the feminist complaining about the "M". Next thing the YMCA will do is change it's name to AAAGARA. (That's any age, any gender, any religion association)

Great work Mr. Colson!

Correction
For those who visited my Blog by clicking my name, I wish to say that the e-mail I got from Senator Mike Enzi wasn't a form letter as he did address every issue I asked about. I only quoted part of his response to Illegal Immigrants. I also sent him a copy of what I posted on my Blog hoping somebody will wake up but I sure won't hold my breath waiting.

What's the problem?
If people have a problem with it, they should be informed when they join that it is the Young Men's _Christian_ Association. Uhhh, we don't discriminate against women however.

My area Y at least pushes Christian and family values (what ARE those, anyway?), but Bible studies, prayer boxes, etc. cannot be found.

Even though I am not religious, I would _not_ be offended. It is a "Christian" association after all. I had been fairly warned.

Without the Bible studies, shouldn't that put their non-profit status in jeopardy? Is there other proselytizing or missionary work that they fund? If they are just "swim and gym", could that cause a loss of non-profit status?

I do appreciate their holistic view.

Thoughts on the Y
Perhaps Mr. Blattner shouldn't be working for Y then, if he feels left out. The Y's mission is to instill ethics and morals, at least that's what they _say_. So if the organization's mission offends you, why work for them? That's like Carrie Nation working in a liquor store and feeling left out. Maybe Mr. Blattner is there because of the free membership?

And to Kathy, who said, "...they can't very well live to please people who choose not to believe in their values and morals."

Putting Bible verses and prayer boxes on walls isn't about morals (what's moral about hanging a box on a wall?). You forgot to mention beliefs, which people may take issue with, even if they agree with your morals and values.

I'm all for the verses and boxes. It _is_ a "Christian" organization after all, or it once was at least. If that offends you, don't join! Duh!

Kathy, about discrimination...
She said, "With a growing number of people buying the 'let's accept everyone and let's not discrimate against anyone', we are putting ourselves and our children in every kind of danger."

You're right. When I start my business I'm going to start by discriminating against Bible-thumpers. I won't hire any. There. I feel safer already.

You see, discrimination can a double-edged sword, like anything else, and can be pointed at anyone for any reason.

And Kathy said, "To accept it all is insanity and very unhuman behavior,..."

Well, there's 'accept' as in approve and 'accept' as in 'to realize something exists and people have a right to live that way if they so choose.' I mean the latter. I think you mean the former.

Nobody, except maybe some militant Gay-BLTs (does that conjure up an image or what?), is asking for you to _approve_ of them or their lifestyle. Just accept (2nd definition). No doubt I'm going to get slaughtered for that statement.

A Letter
I have just posted a letter that every Republican need to receive. You can see the post by clicking on my name. Feel free to send it to your Leaders.

We all know what "YMCA" means . . .
It's a song by the Village People, one of the most popular songs in history.

Jay_in_Milwaukee
Jay,

I feel that if you are the one taking the risks, and it is your business, you should be entitled to hire whomever you please and decline to hire whomever you please. It is, after all, your investment; and its success or failure depend on your decisions. If you choose to reject "bible-thumpers", I see no reason to you can't.

Similarly, if YMCA wants to promote its core beliefs through religious proselytizing at centers they own and operate, they should also be allowed to do so. It is a private organization, and its success or failure depend on their decisions.

The problem comes when we try to institute sensitivity at gunpoint. It is only when we resort to government mandates to satisfy those with nothing at risk that the whole thing comes off the rails.

If you catch he11 for your post, count me as one that sided with you on this one.

Lifting up the C I think
At our local Y, we have a prayer box and some scripture posted in different areas. There is even a Bible on the table. My concern is in the music that is piped into the gym. It is VERY secular in nature. I asked about airing some Christian station and the staff person rolled their eyes and told me that if I brought a CD of religious music they would consider playing it. Maybe lifting up the C only go so far.

If you want to reject bible-thumpers
Jay _In_ Milwaukee

I agree with you, should you choose not to hire "bible-thumpers" That's your choice. You might be happy too- if you don't see any of them where you might end up...
