Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Despite all the rhetoric about “alleviating suffering,” the bottom line in targeting the disabled in utero is the bottom line. As Business Week puts it, “the social cost of accommodating [their] birth is increasingly being seen as exceeding [their] worth.”

Oh my! This utilitarian view of life inevitably leads us exactly where the Nazis were creating a master race. Can’t we see it?

My heart goes out to parents who are raising autistic children. I know what they face because my daughter is raising a 15-year-old autistic son. But I also know firsthand the joy and blessing these children can bring into our lives. The answer is not to play God and keep them from being born—rather we need to help them and their parents. That’s what “alleviating suffering” really means.

Ontario
Mothers in Ontario are not demanding $60,000 because they gave birth to Autistic children. There is an intensive therapy given to autistic children under the age of six that is already covered by our public health care system. However, after the age of six, these children are cut off. Their parents are simply asking that the therapy continue to be provided for them. This therapy, I understand, is turning chlidren who can barely communicate into children who have a hope of being able to provide for themselves when they grow up. Which is better - to provide therapy when it still has a hope of working, or groups homes for adults who can't function in society?

The one glaring fact remains that the incidence of autism has gone from 1 in 10,00 births in the 1990's to 1 in 166 now. Something pretty drastic has happened that has pushed this increase to epidemic proportions--something more drastic and widespread than can be accounted for by individual circumstances such as yours, heredity as put forth by twerp, or the random (un)luck of the draw.

The number of immunizations for children under 2 years old has gone from 3 to over 22. The best course of action for any young parents out there is to make sure your childrens' vaccines are thimerisol free, from single dose bottles. Most vaccines are now thimerisol free, execpt for some flu vaccines. There IS A REASON
