Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- Fascinating speech. It was so rhetorically flat, so lacking in rhythm and cadence, one almost has to believe he did it on purpose. Best not to dazzle on Opening Day. Otherwise, they'll expect magic all the time.

The most striking characteristic of Barack Obama is not his nimble mind, engaging manner or wide-ranging intellectual curiosity. It's the absence of neediness. He's Bill Clinton, master politician, but without the hunger.

Clinton craves your adulation (the source of all his troubles). Obama will take it, but he can leave it too. He is astonishingly self-contained. He gives what he must to advance his goals, his programs, his ambitions. But no more. He has no need to.

Which seems to me the only way to understand the mediocrity of his inaugural address. The language lacked lyricism. The content had neither arc nor theme: no narrative trajectory like Lincoln's second inaugural; no central idea, as was (to take a lesser example) universal freedom in Bush's second inaugural.

This is odd because Obama is so clearly capable of more. But he decisively left behind the candidate who made audiences swoon and the impressionable faint. And that left the million-plus on the Mall, while unshakably euphoric about the moment, let down and puzzled by the speech. He'd given them nothing to cheer or chant, nothing to sing.

Candidate Obama had promised the moon. In soaring cadences, he described a world laid waste by Bush, a world that President Obama would redeem -- bringing boundless hope and universal health, receding oceans and a healing planet.

But now that Obama was president, the redeemer was withholding, the tone newly sober, even dour. The world was still in Bushian ruin, marked by "fear ... conflict ... discord ... petty grievances and false promises ... recriminations and worn-out dogmas." But now no more the prospect of magical restoration. In a stunning exercise in lowered expectations, Obama offered not quite blood, sweat and tears, but responsibility, work, sacrifice and service.

When candidate Obama said "it's not about me, it's about you," that was sheer chicanery. But now he means it, because he really cannot part the waters. Hence his admonition to rely not on the "skill or vision of those in high office," but on "We the People."

On the issue of race, he was even more withholding, and admirably so. He understood that his very presence was enough to mark the monumentality of the moment. Words would be superfluous -- as introducer Dianne Feinstein was apparently unaware -- and he gave it very few.

This was surprising, given that the announced theme of the inaugural -- "a new birth of freedom" -- invited grandiose comparison to Lincoln. Yet in the inaugural address, Obama abandoned the conceit. He allowed that "a man whose father less than 60 years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath." When he followed that with "So let us mark this day with remembrance of who we are and how far we have traveled," you were sure he would trace the journey back to Lincoln and the Second (post-Gettysburg) Republic or to King and the civil rights revolution.

But Obama didn't. Remarkably, he instead reached back -- over King and Lincoln -- to George Washington. He rooted the values he cherishes most (and wants us to renew) in the Founders, in the First Republic, the slave-tainted one (as our schoolchildren are incessantly reminded) that had to await Lincoln for its cleansing.

Obama's unapologetic celebration of Washington and the founders of the original imperfect union was a declaration of his own emancipation from -- or better, transcendence of -- the civil rights movement. The old warrior Joseph Lowery prayed for the day when "white will embrace what is right." Not Obama. By connecting himself in this historic address to Washington rather than Lincoln the liberator, Obama was legitimizing the full sweep of American history without annotation or mental reservation. If we ever have a post-racial future, this moment will mark its beginning.

Obama did this in prose, not his usual poetry. And he buried it in an otherwise undistinguished speech marred by a foreign-policy section featuring the mushy internationalism of his still-bizarre Berlin adventure.

Perhaps that was just a bone to appease the faithful he had otherwise left hungry. We have no way of knowing. A complicated man, this new president. Opaque, contradictory and subtle. And that's just day one.

CK: It's worse than you've described
He intentionally is setting a "low bar" for the economy, meaning he wants people to know that they should keep trusting in him even while the economy continues to sink.......because he will go full-speed ahead with his semi-socialist plans to "change" our economy. We can see this full-well, by all measures of what we hear from him, Summers, Reich, and Rahm. And of course Pelosi. He knows that his changes might bankrupt the economy and turn many of us into "John Galts". He just doesn't care, because he sees certain "winners" in the future, and they are the voters he hopes will continue to vote for the "Dems". We are truly in a mess, and it will get much worse as tax rates climb, govt grows, "healthcare for all" is instituted, and the private sector economy shrinks........leading to a loss of the American Dream. This guy is something else.......Charles I think you understand this too.

RagingCentrist - Minnesota
How goes Stuart Smalley-ville?

I do NOT want what BRAAAAAAAAAAAACK Obamasiah said he would do TO this country. So, YES, I want his attempts to give me his "change" to FAIL.

Clear?

Dear Albert
I'll echo that. Obama has been mentored all his life in the most radical and corrupt methods of liberal politics. He'll not depart from it now. His implementation of far-left dogma will likely come in mild increments (as usual) and not in brute-force avalanches... but it will come. It'll be up to good citizens to be alert to his every move and to spread the word to our neighbors as to what it portends. As always, patriots must keep their powder dry. Now... perhaps literally. The first move of a budding tyrant is always to disarm the populace.

Obama's speech
First, the fact that all the inaugeration festivities cost 150 million dollars is obscene! Our country is in big trouble and in deep dept. That 150 million could have helped many people.

The main thing about Obama's speech is that he is a consummate liar! None of what he says can be believed as the truth. He says what he says to influence people to do what he wants them to do. However, he doesn't let a little thing like the truth affect what he says.

Some Obama supporters say, "Don't you want Obama to be a successful president?". Successful at what? Do I want him to be successful at changing this country to a Socialist country? Absolutely not!

All of us who believe in a free enterprize system of economy must do whatever we can to thwart President Obama's plans to change this country into a Godless and Socialist State.

Raging Centrist in Mn

What a loon!

Being like Lincoln isn't a stretch
It's absurd. Charles you described what happened but you didn't label it. He is rapidly as possible trying to tell his drooling followers that he didn't mean it and he can't deliver the hundreds of absurd promises he made. He said, "After all, I'm just a lying politician like all of the others. Get over it." Get a grip, Charles. Obama is a phoney. I saw it before he was elected, but Hollywood and the socialist driven press corps put him in office by making him the Messiah. His interest groups will roast him in time. Hell hath no fury like a Communist scorned.

Change
Change is easy--improvement is hard.

THE BIG ONE
So he reached the summit, looked down, and thought,"Oh great. They are all here to take a piece of what they think they bought. What can I deliver?"
Gitmo:PO thinks,"Hmm.. I'll throw it out there and see what happens.."
Is he seeing?
Abortion:Well didn't we all KNOW that would be day ONE?
Treasury:Again, this is pretty much what was promised.
Real concern now is that my Marine hubby goes back to Iraq in August and PO has quit talking about a TIMELINE. I hope this is good. Maybe he will actually listen to the Generals that serve under him and decide they are pretty smart.
I hope so.
It serves EVERYONE if he ACTUALLY does become the great leader the Dems make him out to be, but his actual value system isn't that good.
I know, he's really stretching to compare himself with Lincoln, and Washington. James K.Polk,JFK,and Bill Clinton are much more compareable former presidents.

Everyone is left hungry.....

I am not sure what the protocol will be but I saw Pres. and V. Pres. administering an oath to the WH Staff and he told Joe to do it.. He (Joe) said something stupid, I can't remember now, but Obama looked upset as to say, "Yes Stupid Joe, you do it I don't do menial things." I also saw the WH briefing and the new Staff that took Dana's place hardly answered questions.. I saw Obama passing through some of the Reporters and he treated them less than courteous... Aren't these, or at least most of them the ones that did cartwheels to make sure he got all the good coverage during his campaign.. He is stepping on toes right and left, Diane Feinstein comes to mind.. No he has an agenda and it scares me... I could say more but I used up most of it before the election trying to wake people up... The puppets only listened to the smooth talker and didn't read between the lines... I guess its up to the 46% that voted McCain/Palin to keep our minds and eyes open...

3-card Monty Presidency
As we all should know, the street side game of 3 card monty is a deceptive game that institutes a "Bate and Switch" method of fooling and fraudulently extricating people out of their money. This a new level of deception perpetrated on the general public. Most of the time people will be shamed into a state of remorse.

Obama=evil
The leadership of this creature known as "The One", the messiah of the left, will destroy this great nation and he's already started with GITMO and Abortion.
Coupled with the evil policies soon to be brought forward and chanpioned by such as Pelosi, Reid and the rest of the leftist, liberal herd, controls and laws will be put in place that will radically change what once was America and I want no part of it.
All the spending and grandiose schemes as are nothing more than those championed by FDR and they didn't work then and they want now.
He's not my President, the Demoncrats are not my party and this is not my government. I'll pay my taxes and pray that we survive.

No need to schmooze...
No need to schmooze the people anymore. As Obama told the Republican leaders he met with regarding the "stimulus" package...."Remember,I won"! As he wrote in one of his books, I learned well as a black to smile a lot and agree. At the Harvard Review, he remembered well that it was the need to quiet the race riots there that gave him the position. He learned only to designate, not worry, just take credit if all turns out well otherwise, point fingers.

He listened well to all of Chicago (Rahm and Axelrod, Daley, etc.) who ran his campaign...he hoodwinked everyone with a great smile, well-written speeches that he delivered with eloquence and the old message of "change" and "hope"..majority of time with a teleprompter.

No, it wasn't HIS brilliance or intelligence that gave him the presidency. He schemed, lied, cheated and grabbed unto the coattails of anyone who would help him reach the ultimate that he believed he deserved. It began in Chicago and it was the Chicago organization that chose and groomed him. He took orders well. They came to Iowa in busloads to gain him, Chicago style, that first important win....and
it will be Chicago that will either make or break his presidency. He'll do what they say or he'll end up like Blagowich who was arrogant enough and refused to "go along".

Obama's Country of Christians & Muslims?
I found President Obama's speech condescending when he stated that we are a country of Christians and Muslims and no one applauded as he paused. I think people were a bit stunned. He then added,Jews, Hindus and non-blievers, which is and untrue statement and distorts the greatness and the history of the United States of America.

As the President of the United States, he should have been proud to state the facts about this great country and he should have stated that 52 of the 55 Framers of the U.S. Constitution were members of Orthodox Christian churches and that they believed that the U.S. Constitution included divine law. He would have stated that the United States of America is founded upon Judeo-Christian beliefs which is the foundation of our country that allows religions of all peaceful denominations to practice their beliefs in this great country. It appeared to me that he was attempting to condition and test the American people by misleading the youth and others into believing that we are founded on equal ground by Christians and Muslims which is what the Netherlands have done and now Geert Wilders is being prosecuted for a "Hate Crime" by the Muslims who have dominated their country because he warned America about the dangers of allowing the Islamic terrorists to dominate America and to fight back against the same fate of the Netherlands and the UK who were tolerant and now are prosecuted by the courts engaged in Shariah Law that trampled and made themselves the dominant court over the court established in the Netherlands and they now live in fear of speaking out. Therefore, listen to the words, America and make sure that the foundation that this country was built upon is not "changed" for far left liberal or radical agendas.

When ALL is said and done…
Obama’s inaugural address was flat and without substance. Sure, as he has done for the last two years; although somewhat subdued, his rhetoric was still there. However, the rhetoric was without passion. The applause throughout was subdued and without passion as well. Although there were a few bright moments that almost made me think Obama may be on the right track after all.

However, I keep asking myself, “Who is this guy and where is he coming from and where is he going?” The only thing he has accomplished in his life-time is get himself elected President of the United States. Which posses another question or two…how on earth did he accomplish that; and now that he is President, what is he going to do?

Only “time will tell”…in the mean time America is on the brink of an obstinacy that will destroy it, if not corrected. Obama although trying to govern from the center will surely fail, because his sole and heart are without substance or gratitude for what makes America so unique. Words alone will not suffice for making the “right” decisions. Obama will naturally blame the pervious administration for his failures and although we now have a “One Party” representation in Washington, future decisions will not be the “right” decisions for America. These decisions, ultimately right or wrong, will not be immediately apparent; yet time and commonsense will eventually make them self evident.

This scares me and should scare every American that believes in “freedom”. Yet, as the recent election proves, most Americans have lost the commonsense necessary for making informed decisions and the toughness required for a strong, independent, prosperous, and free America.

When ALL is said and done…America will be the first casualty of the twenty-first century. As Obama goes…so goes America…so goes the rest of the world.

Harken Unto My Words...

For the Obamasiah sayeth, "Suffer little fetuses, come unto me; For I will help snuff you out, and give you rest."

The Abortion Messiah
"Events may continue to help Providence mold this amazing [abortion-promoting] man's character."
____________________________________________

What "Providence"?

What character?

Lincoln's Greatest
Lincoln's greatest literary work arguably derived from his need to make serious statements about the War.

Obama's greatest literary efforts could come from his response to a war that may be in the offing, something much bigger and world-wide.

Events may continue to help Providence mold this amazing man's character.

By the way, Pat Buchanan's article is worth reading; also, Michael Gerson's. My three favorites writers in this forum are Charles, Pat and Michael.

Law of Gravity
This is the best article on the speech I've seen, or will see--and I thought Pat Buchanan's was outstanding!

Many, many dissertations and books will look back, or should look back, to this article, which did not have the advantage of anything but thoughtful, profoundly thoughtful--and fairly quick--reflections.

I would add that the variegated performances during the ceremony and then the next morning during the national prayer service--these also say something about the man and his character. Rick Warren's words as written down may not have moved a body, but as spoken by him were very moving to me. Warren himself, a great man in his own right, was clearly so moved by the man and the event. The poet, Alexander, created something, to me, quite beautiful and utterly fitting. The music--no one that I've read has remarked the noble, solemn--yet aspiring--sounds that came from legendary artists. John Williams is to be praised to high heaven. Lowery's words needed, for their completion, the tearful response, "live," by Juan Williams. All of this was extraordinarily moving. Even the mistakes in the oath seemed "planned."

Beautiful things, ideas, works, people, assemblies, churches--truly glorious happenings seem to gravitate to this man. I'm not just jumping on the bandwagon here. There is something going on.

Probably gathering clouds.

Obama's promise of change
I have been voting in presidential elections for over 50 years. In all that time, I have never seen a president-elect (now our president) who has chosen what I believe to be a more ill-suited, amoral, ethics deficient group of individuals for his cabinet than Barack Obama. Virtually every one of his cabinet choices is dogged by clouds of ethics violations, poor judgement, total incompetence, or otherwise unseemly behavior. I really fear for the security of this country.

Love Dr Krauthammer
But sometimes you can be too

Opaque, contradictory, subtle.

My mind is so stimulated, I need to just go break something.

A great article
Mr. Krauthammer and I think part of the reason for your summary of the lacking his speech had is that I heard he actually wrote this one himself and that would account for the nothingness of it. He has no real substance as an individual with any grit or leadership qualities. He is a huge vacuum of deceit, corruption, uncleanliness, wrong doing and all the wrong people. You can cite Ayers, Wright and Khalidi just to name a few. All these evil people and things are what make up the thing that he is.

Rocco For President!
Since there are no qualifications other than total narcisism and Chicago gangster backing, my Chihuahua would be as relevant as leader of the free world as BO.

As the Bush Admnistration loots the treasury on their way out, BO loots the treasury on his way in! Nazi Pelozi and Hairball Reid are drooling over all that money...slurp, slurp, slurp.

Thanks CK for an insightful article. I certainly agree that the acceptance speech was a waste of perfectly good hyperbole.

Raging Centrist Mn.
Everything you say sounds good.

Here's the problem. You voted for Jesse Ventura. Hmmmm.....,did he not make the talk show rounds touting his belief that Sept. 11, 2001 was an inside job?

Did you vote for Al Franken?

Complicated Or Measured?
I'm not so sure if I think Obama is really all that complicated.

I believe he has been planning on becoming president for many, many years, perhaps all his life. I think when he wrote his book, it was a measured, well-thought-out procedure, done as part of his overall life-long plan to run. I also think that certain things were included in his book in preparation of hopefully containing certain rumors that are still raging out there about him.

Part of me wants to like Mr. Obama and I will certainly continue to pray for him. But not that he will succeed in his plans for his presidency, because his plans are awful and I rather like the country we've had for over 200 years, warts and all-but that God will send him wise and Godly counsel and that he will heed that counsel. The past three days have not shown that this is happening just yet.

I hope and pray with all my heart that he finds a real and right relationship with God and finds the spiritual backbone to turn away from the far-left crazies that got him elected. Because if he does not, I fear he will demolish what's left of the protective hedge that Almighty God has around this nation. Using our tax dollars to fund overseas abortions put a huge chunk in it. And at the same time, he wants us to patty-cake with terrorists?

The most innocent of all pay with their lives for the sake of convenience. And the most awful of all get undeserved privileges.

Nana
"So his solution as President is to move to the "center" and try to please everyone."

Not trying to please everyone, just the 80% of us who are in the Center. It is you 10%-ers who want the likes of Obama and Bush to do everything "your way". Hopefully, Obama will move to the center and disregard you and your partisan friends on both sides, who are tearing this country apart.

MerryColin
I think you may have the wrong idea about Centrists. It is a common mistake. Please read my recent reply to Harrison.

Actually, Centrism is exactly what this country needs. As I said, partisanship is tearing us apart. It gets more and more extreme every election and the bitterness and acrid discourse have caused us to talk but never listen to each other. Democrats and Republicans can't see it, because they are mired in their own oblivion. They each blame the other guy and try to tell us that they will do a better job. But it never happens.

Centrism takes the best parts of both sides, adds some ideas of their own and discards the bad parts of the system.

Now you are correct if you think that I am living a pipe dream. But isn't it better to work for a better system than to sink with a bad one? I have been voting since 1968 and have been disappointed every time. We have been going downhill ever since. In the last 5 elections, I have never voted for a Democrat or Republican. I voted for Jesse Ventura in Minnesota and he was the best governor we have had in recent memory. Too bad he had other shortcomings, but as a Centrist (Independent), he made us a much better state.

Harrison
Harrison, thanks for your direct answers and questions. First, a Centrist is the exact opposite of a Partisan. Of course, partisans exist on both ends of the political spectrum, so they both consider the other side as the "exact opposite". But if you group them together as "partisans", then I am the opposite of that. I think the extreme partisanship of both parties is tearing us apart.

Basically, I pick and choose the best parts of each side and criticize the parts I do not agree with. Also, there are many things that both sides do that I disagree with. And those I believe are the main problems we have with our government and our society. For instance, PACs, lobbyists, pork and campaign donations are things that both sides do that are ruining our democracy.

Your point about printing money is understood, however, the amount that is printed has been steady for many years, mainly because the politicians know it is political suicide to print too much and drive up inflation. Inflation has been relatively flat for many years now. So there only alternative (in their minds) is to borrow money from other countries and from our own people. It never occurs to them to "cut spending". Sure they give lip service to it, buy have they done much of it? NO.

These are some of the things a Centrist does. Don't get the idea that we are "wishy-washy" and jump back and forth between Dems and Reeps. As far as I am concerned, they both stink. And it is only because they have both been taken over by their respective extreme wings, or their "base" as they like to call it.

Interesting...
It's great that many of the posters here can chide Obama for his failings and shortcomings. God knows that Bush was among our best presidents ever.

Don't worry Old Coot
We're all in this together and it's gonna be ok. Hang in there and stay tuned. We don't expect you to believe right away -- but success will build your confidence.

Let's get this country going!

Thanks for your patriotism!

Mr. O
Had this "uniter" had one IOTA of class in what he condoned the "sheeples" to display in their disrespect to President Bush, the good rev's rants of "yellow be mellow"..ect.ect.. stirring racism when called upon as he did in the campaign ALL TO WELL. One could have only presumed that his speech would be flatter than a piece of paper.Who would have "expected" any more from this man....and will KA KA KA Katie,Brokaw,Matthews (with the chill up his leg,the NYTimes (whom borrowed @ 14 % int.from a loan shark from Mexico to keep running....gotta love it!!)finally do the vetting...you bet not as they have to cover their collective asses!!! Who expected more from this speech....NOT I !!! Ben Franklin was a true patriot and leader ..our society has lost their collective brain cells and have become the"entitlement" band of radicals who will get their email & text updates to pressure policies to come.

Rights for terrorists, death for unborn
As with Lincoln, Obama is a Chicago lawyer one term Senator who speaks out of the side of his mouth while doing radical things.

What, Mr. Krauthammer, is subtle about closing Gitmo and offering terrorists rights in federal courts while kicking away taxpayer money to international abortions (or, frankly, any abortions) in week one of his presidency?

Krauthammer can spin his wheels over a speech, but Obama and the Dem House and Senate will be all action:

No new drilling, tax hikes on individuals and businesses, welfare expansion, increased federal takeover of hospitals, doctors, and drug companies, increased regulation, increased taxation on gas and energy, admonishing Israel, price controls, massive government waste, gradual retreat from the Middle East, do-nothing attitude with regard to North Korea and Iran, federal takeover of banking industry.

Hussein
Obama has promised us a "new beginning", and we will see that new beginning. All the naysayers need to shut up and just watch what his "new beginning" really is.

IT IS THE BEGINNING ALRIGHT, THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY AS WE HAVE KNOWN IT FOR OVER 200 YEARS.

Doctor K, please say Kaddish for the country, it died on November 4, 2008, and the funeral service was held on January 20, 2009.

The Old Fart
Georgia

the funny thing is that if
prez obama had given a "grandiouse rhetorically soaring" speech Mr. Krauthammer would have been all over it with a prepared article critcizing it as being "a bunch of high sounding platitudes, pretty words that mean nothing"

Prez Obama did just fine on his speech and if you really listened to him you got his message of pragmatism in dealing with the countries future in dealing with tough problems ahead.

Mr. Krauthammer should know that politicians tailor the speeches to their audience and events. he also should know the difference between campaign mode and governing.

In defense of Mr. Krauthammer
There are some good posts here!

I just wanted to say that, any of you worried that Mr. Krauthammer has gone round the proverbial bend, there's no need for worry.

I am not a psychiatrist but Mr. Krauthammer was. I am rather certain that his article was erring on the side of kindness to Barry Dunham. It was not because he had been won over at the dinner, having drunk copious amounts of kool-aid.

Read the article again. There's a lot to read "between" the words.

Thanks Hitch!
Agree we need to get this economy back on trak -- and fast! No way we intend to get you "taxed into slavery."

Let's get going!

Thanks!

OMG!
Krauthammer as a psychiatrist should have seen through Obama's narcissism. Obama's genius was in flattering Krauthammer, Will and other RINOs.

Are sociopaths needy, Dr Krauthammer?

william
writes, "We have chosen hope over fear and unity of purpose over conflict and discord."

quoting our new president. Well, it would seem the people are still afraid by the only empirical measure, their pocketbooks. When we stop having conflict and discord about our purpose and become completely united in purpose, I will know it is time to cross the border as fast as my little feet will carry me and leave my beloved country in the rear view mirror. I don't recall the ballot choices being hope or fear. conflict or unity. I always choose the lesser evil. The man less likely to tax me further into slavery. A losing proposition to be sure.

Obama Can No Longer Vote "Present"
Obama knows, as President, he can no longer hide behind a safe vote of "Present" where no one can criticize him if things go wrong. So his solution as President is to move to the "center" and try to please everyone. Unfortunately, we have seen throughout the whole election progress that Obama's biggest motivation is for his own personal political expediency.

I also think Charles Krauthammer is trying very hard to be optimistic about Obama, but I believe he knows this country is in serious trouble.

I missed the speech.
I had watched much of the campaign noise but the inauguration day speech was timed during my golf time with my friends. So I played golf, and by the reactions of almost all the posters, I made the right decision.

Past performance is the best indicator of future performance. Mr. Obama cannot readily make a decision on any political topic. He voted; present, on all matters of importance while a legislator in Illinois. This allowed him to advance his standing with a much wider group of people because he never said "yea" or "nea" to any of them. Now he has to say Yes or No. It is the only choice an executive has. If he tries to say "maybe" or lets first have a task force to look into every problem, our country will continue to founder. Things were fine for the first 6 years of the Bush administration. But when the lame duck sysdrome sets in from within and without the administration foundered. No support from without and no interest from within. If Mr. Obama wants to succeed he will have to be decisive. His speech indicates that he will not be decisive.

His first day in office he made indecisive "decisions". On Guantanomo he waiverd. Any intelligent person knew that if you close Gitmo, you have to open Gitmo II someplace else. All proponents of closing Gitmo are vacuous when it comes to; What then?

Mr. Obama seems to be saying that Americans have to "put this country back together again". But why is he trying to do so by offering a stimulus package. We don't need one. We need an opportunity to solve our own problems without government intervention. Get rid of some government and reduce the tax burden of everyone. Then watch us succeed again and again.

Now you know!

Good job, Mr. Krauthammer!
Always nice to hear from the loyal opposition. I know your job for the next 8 years will be to make sure we and the rest of the Obama team (every American, really) keeps doing the best for America we can -- so any constructive criticisms you think appropriate keep 'em coming.

As our great new President boldly stated on the amazing day that seems to have left you feeling a little "out" -- "We have chosen hope over fear and unity of purpose over conflict and discord."

Thanks for your input. God bless you and your expertise and most importantly -- our brand new America!

Speech First Thing He's Owned
Flat speech because he wrote his own speech, all prior speeches (received so enthusiastically) written by speech writers. Speech was flat, ideas flat, man in empty suit flat...empty because he hasn't done anything to fill the suit yet.....he compares himself to Lincoln and excuse me but Lincoln made hard choices, went to war to free the slaves and also brought military and civilians before military tribunals during wartime, not close military facilities holding dangerous terrorists during wartime...I find far more comparisons between Lincoln and President Bush 43. Hubris to compare before you have a record.....first get a record.

Here, Here, Scarlettsnow!
Re: Your post of 11:20 AM - you nailed both men. I have NEVER understood how Obama has managed to hoodwink so many people. He is not eloquent. His speeches are not well delivered. They do not inspire. So what is it? Is it that we are so uneducated now that we have never heard true eloquence, true inspiration, true intellect?

Pleading with all of you.
And can we please stop throwing around buzzwords like they are pearls of wisdom?

Same side of a different coin.
"Liberal" and "conservative" are points of view, not people.
I have never known anyone that formed ideas in such a simple way and was not actually handicapped.
Ideas are far too nuanced to fit into a box, and yet there are many people that can read Ann Coulter and Al Franken with a straight face.
People like them are little more then court jesters that simple people think are messengers from the gods. They are not to be taken seriously. I would be shocked if Coulter was so dumb as to believe the over-the-top crap that she spews. ( Al Franken; I'm not so sure. He might be that simple.

Everyone has their own Ideas. Some are good and some are bad. No group has exclusive rights to the good ones.

America did not implode with 8 years of Bush ( as many cowards on the left were afraid of) and it won't implode after 8 of Obama ( as many cowards on the right fear). Our country is much stronger then any party, even if they control Congress and the White House.

Get your information from different sources. Watch MSNBC and FOX. Read the New York Times and Town Hall.
It probably won't kill you, you might learn more. and if you decide that you don't enjoy media that does not feed you what you want to hear then at least you will get some concrete examples of why they are evil.

Lets all of us , right left and middle, grow up.
Lets stop being so reactionary.
Lets start disagreeing with each other without sounding
stupid.

NONE IS RIGHT: CONFUSED NOT COMPLICATED
BAFFLED BHO
None writes:

Mr. Krauthammer..You say BHO is complicated..he is more confused than complicated, as he portrayed himself as JFK in Germany, FDR & Reagan while campaining, lusted for Lincoln a few weeks before the inaugeration, and expounded on George Washington in his address. This man has not a clue who he is,

ApolloSpeaks:

None is right! Obama has never found himself and does not know who he is. He suffers from an inferiority complex, like his wife, and identity problems, both of which he tries to hide behind an inflated image of himself as a great man belonging in the company of great men like Lincoln, FDR, Dr. King, etc. Click ApolloSpeaks and read my piece Barack Obama, Lincoln and the Image of Presidential Greatness for insight

Encouraging
The level headed and rational thinking of so many who are commenting on this article by Mr. Krauthammer, helps to bring a modicum of balance to the irrationality of those so hypnotized by Obamamania.

Leaving the People Hungry
Charles, just what were the drugs served at your dinner with Obama.

God you were easy.

No longer the salesman
During the campaign we were compelled by the liberal left-wing media (Tom Brokaw, "take that!") to listen to this half-black, half-baked piker, a BS salesman with a mouth full of samples.

Now it looks like we see very clearly what he was selling.

Empty vessel
There's another possibility: He doesn't know what to do now that he's actually here. You fail to learn from his history: lackluster State Representative who had a tendency to vote "present"; non-existent head of the Harvard Law Review; and a do-nothing Senator from Ill. He has shown he is great at running for and winning things, but has shown absolutely no acumen once he gets what he wants. Why would POS be any different?

He's a seeker and achiever and striver who doesn't seem to know what to do once he gets what he wanted. I suspect his speech was so empty because he really has nothing to say now that he's in charge.

Obama has cast his spell on you
Charles,

I guess Obama was able to get that punchbowl spiked over at George Will's house a couple of weeks ago and you partook in tainted Kool-Aid.

When someone like you is even mesmerized and looking for ways to give him convoluted credit for things like strategically "flat" speeches, it demonstrates that you are under his spell.

Maybe Obama is the Anti-Christ. After all, that serpent did have a "silver tongue" and he used it to first befriend --- and then to persuade.

I guess Rush Limbaugh will be inviting Pelosi and Reid over to his house for dinner sometime soon because of his desire to be enlightened in the ways of Liberalism. You're terribly naive to think Obama cares even one iota. He merely wants to manipulate even the few possible Conservative journalistic voices. You must also be sadly needy for personal acceptance.

hail to the chief
this man is nothing mire than n empty suit. the stimulus will fail, and corruption will be rampant.

How can you seperate Lowry from Obama?
You opine as though Obama's wisdom to withold mention of racial history was somehow transcendent of Obama's past association with race baiters like Wright and Ayers. Do you believe that every word of the benediction was not proof read and approved by the Obamessiah? I don't! By allowing this excuse for a clergyman to openly insult the Caucasian and Asian population of this country, Obama shows he's no better than Al Sharpton!

When ALL is said and done…

Obama’s and the Democrat’s social and economic re-engineering policies will be complete failures. The average American needs a history lesson or two. Sure the rhetoric sounds and feels good; however, history and common sense says failure is eventually the long term result. Short term…sounds good…feels good; long term a disaster and a nightmare that will forever change America.

In the long-term, this “change” will be for the good of America; however we will be forced to endure the catastrophes, over a generation or two that it will unleash. It will start ever so slowly and mushrooms like a snow ball rolling down hill.

The collective judgment displayed by the majority of the voters on Nov. 4th, 2008 is very disturbing. Obama reminds me of others throughout history, with their ability to so quietly and enchantingly say one thing, mean and do another; and people will shake their heads in approval of the very things they oppose. What is amazing is they believe they have agreed with him. The results of this election provide proof that people can be hypnotized to the degree that they not know what they are doing. What is very scary is that history has also proven repeatedly; that those willing to agree without questioning become hypnotized and are the first to die by the millions.

This election has set the course of this nation for the next two or three decades and possibly forever. I fear that the voting public does not really understand the choice they just made. It holds only the promise of security and will definitely create bigger government at all levels, and more entitlements; and carries a huge price tag of more expanded governmental power, deficits, and taxes at the expense of our individual liberties. My hope was that voters would choose the more difficult path of liberty and limited government; so that the American dream and culture for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness would once again triumph and flourish.

America, the first casualty…

I LOVE YOU SCARLETT
I have always held Mr. Krauthaummer in the highest esteem as he is a genius; however, I suggest Townhall hire Scarlettsnow to replace Charles as she obviously has her hand on this new President's pulse like no one else.

Arrogant, Conceited and Clueless
One of the most overplayed sound bites during the campaign was from Obama’s former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright. It would appear however, these words may prove to be the very essence of irony.

Barack Obama, if he didn’t actually promise, did infer that when he was president, “The seas will recede. The planet will heal. Everyone will love America again.” Now that he actually is the president, it is clear that “on the job training” will prove to be an understatement.

As evidenced at his signing of Executive Orders, he can’t even issue an order without someone from his staff telling him what it is he is about to decry. It is clear that for Barack Obama, “his chickens ……… have come home ……… to roost!

John
My exact sentiments, well said. Maybe we should contact all our psuedo representatives and Senators, you remember them? They are
supposedly our employees but there seems to have been a palace coup and now we are their wage slaves. Maybe we should ask them your questions which mirror many of our questions on this thread. And maybe we should demand, rather than ask these questions be answered.
Even though we know we will be subjected to bloviation and double speak.
One thing I do whenever I am out, whether walking the Mall (my kids hide whenever they
go shopping with me because they KNOW me so well), sitting in a restaurant, whereever I am in public..I start talking with whoever I am with, but actually talking to those around me,
a few decibels higher than regular conversations. I may not change many minds,
it is a chore since the libs are so stuck on stupid, but there's always the chance there is someone with some intelligence left that may hear me and think..and I know with some, thinking is like lifting 500 pound weights but
I figure I am planting seeds..one by one.

Good one scarlet
I'm having post-partisan depression.

Methinks you swoon too much, Charles
and miss your own point:
"... the mediocrity of his inaugural address. The language lacked lyricism. The content had neither arc nor theme: no narrative trajectory ... no central idea,..."
"Opaque, contradictory and subtle."

Obama is no post-partisan anything -
He is a dissembling example of mediocrity, lacking, no central idea EXCEPT socialism - he is a solipsistic empty cartoon of a man like Clinton.
Both have no moral or ethical center, both use people whenever it is convenient, both lie through equivocation, both believe themselves arrogantly superior, both have no shame, both seek power and money whatever the means, and both married nagging, bitter women.
Clinton and Obama are who they are because they have no center self and overblown false egos. That is why both men are so dangerous and why each should never have been elected president.
Clinton and Obama have done NOTHING for this country except TAKE from her.
Clinton and Obama are what they have chosen to be - pretenders to the throne.
Both are sociopathic, cunning, sickening frauds.
I despise both men and pray for Obama to fail in all his socialist agenda.
WAKE UP, CHARLES!
You're sounding like a pathetic Matthews.

The sheer weight
of the responsibility for the safety and well being of 300 million people is so profound, theory often gives way to practicality and facts. Already, from his inaugural speech on, the far left is upset with Obama. That is good news.

B.O. speeches
I've often thought how much BO sounds like a preacher when he speaks. Never a lot of specifics, but that may be typical for a pol at these higher levels.
Remember, hew was not overwhelmingly voted in.. but his agenda is poised to steamroller us, thanks to the Dem controlled House & Senate.
As a small businessman, his agenda is alarming.

Out Of The Box
It is odd to hear Krauthammer critize a major presidental address especially after all the propganda he has digested and passed onto the American public.

To MerryColin
Hear hear!!!! Bravo Ben Franklin!

It is men like Franklin, not Lincoln (the most disastrous president in American history), that we should be emulating.

Excellent quote.

Btw Phylo
If Obama ever achieves a 100% approval rating, not as farfetched as you might imagine, consider Putin's approval rating, will you jump up and down with tears of joy exclaiming his post ideological triumph? Probably. Its easy if you only count the votes you want to. I imagine Stalin's poll numbers were way better than that at that point in his career. Interestingly, they never slipped that much either.

PHYLO DE FISER

FIGURES DON'T LIE, BUT LIARS FIGURE.

Sorry, I have an accouting background and don't believe in polls unless you provide all the questions that were on the polls and who they gathered these polls from. Rasmussen never called our house in Texas for a poll. Texas has such diverse multiculture communities that it would require a sampling from every community and county for an accurate poll. 400 counties, El Paso, Texas is over 1200 miles from Houston, Texas and also a culture apart.

NOT WEEPING !

Phylo
writes, "Did you know Obama has a 62% approval rating––in Texas!"

How many minutes did he have on the job when that poll was taken?

John
A democratic Republic is designed to have no leaders. Leaders are the mark of democracies, despotism, and monarchies. We must return to calling those elected "representatives", even though they rarely represent all but a few special interests that will insure their re-election.

Nap time!!
Mr. K get some rest!! You're hallucinating. Obama is not good for this country!! Don't even begin to go there, please. You all at TH may have forgotten. Or did you put aside the issues of the vault birth record and documents he has not released? I haven't forgotten and I don't ever intend to just let it be swept under the presidential rug. There are some people who are NOT fooled by a nice suit, a haircut, and O's "kind eyes!"

RagingCentrist
Your handle is befuddling. Are you like the man in the sinking ship who cannot decide if he should leave by way of the left side or right and, as a result, goes down with the ship? I see "centrists" as those who go along to get along which is certainly NOT what this country needs today!

Sacrifice?
BO wants Americans to sacrifice - OK. Who at the top is willing to sacrifice? Has Congress decided to forgo their pay raises and take a cut? Has the President and Congress decided to forego their rich pensions and take Social Security benefits instead? Have they gotten rid of their fancy limos and taxpayers junkets? Have they shown leadership by taking the first step towards sacrifice? No. Will they ever - NO!
Leaders" are called such becasue they lea and set an example. Too bad, there are no leaders left in our Govt, just "Takers". So in other words, the Americans that paid their mortages, bills and taxes are supposed to sacrafice?
I don't think so Tim!

P
A very cogent post. I also am troubled by the ease with which Obama is apparently able to impress the conservatives he meets. I stated over a year ago that he seemed like a perfectly nice person but, his politics were atrocious. I share your fear that we may not get the objective analysis from Krauthammer or Will that we have come to expect. We shall see. Perhaps it is just a temporary generousness of bipartisan spirit to at least give the guy a chance. I don't have a problem with that. The comparison to Clinton was apropos regarding a propensity for deception. But, no hunger for adulation? Perhaps. Maybe just a fierce determination to his cause. A very complicated cause and one which I do not share one tiny bit. The next one hundred days should tell.

What he should have said...
"History affords us many instances of the ruin of states, by the prosecution of measures ill suited to the temper and genius of their people. The ordaining of laws in favor of one part of the nation, to the prejudice and oppression of another, is certainly the most erroneous and mistaken policy. An equal dispensation of protection, rights, privileges, and advantages, is what every part is entitled to, and ought to enjoy... These measures never fail to create great and violent jealousies and animosities between the people favored and the people oppressed; whence a total separation of affections, interests, political obligations, and all manner of connections, by which the whole state is weakened."
--Benjamin Franklin, Emblematical Representations

Now that's a speech!

One more thing
Obama can't really work -- he's an actor, not a president. If the cameras and directors aren't around, he's at a loss. This country is being controlled by Pelosi and Reid -- we all know that anyway. God help us all. God Bless America because that's the only hope we have.

Obama is still a fake
I saw on Tuesday what I saw throughout the campaign--what people thought they wanted. The blacks are the ones who need to get it right. They were included in the freedom and safety that GWB stayed awake and watched over our country to insure. I don't think Obama has that same concern for either blacks or whites--or yellows or reds. He is all about himself. A person who has never heard to have done service hours before Monday (or maybe Thanksgiving was the first time) and who puts Americans at risk his first and second day of office by closing a prison and worrying about prisoners being water-boarded when they had intended to kill themselves by flying a plane into a building, is not my idea of service or a hero.

Personally, I think Charles Krauthammer is having to work pretty hard at saying nice things; he was skeptical during campaign and election and I think he's brilliant enough to know this nation is in trouble, not just financially. Closing a prison isn't going to help our economy, and I for one, am suspicious that Obama owes someone a favor in the nasty world of terrorists -- did they too contribute to his campaign? I just hope all of us can last for 1,458 more days.

BHO Speech
CK has it right. The speech had a chronological big picture rather than a syrupy narrative. The total picture BHO presented was not that uplifting. However, I remember Bush's 2d inaugural address, both my wife and I voted for him yet we just looked at each other and went "Huh?"

BHO is a brilliant young man, engaging and thoughtful. I'm growing a bit tired of the 24/7 MLK Festival. Enough already. Get to work Mr. President. Close Gitmo if you will, fine, etc., but get to work and get some results.

It's possible that if BHO improves our nation, and all us hope he does, there could be a new "Obama Republican" class of voters.

I have some serious doubts about this new President, we didn't vote for Obama but I do wish him the best in re-invigorating rather than making a bigger co-dependency of our United States of America. We all know what arguments support either outcome, ad nauseam.

BHO's a cool operator, I will say that, a little too information controlling for my taste, but let's see what the man can do.

BAFFLED BHO
Mr. Krauthammer..You say BHO is complicated..he is more confused than complicated, as he portrayed himself as JFK in Germany, FDR & Reagan while campaining, lusted for Lincoln a few weeks before the inaugeration, and expounded on George Washington in his address.
This man has not a clue who he is, as he depends entirely on others for his way through a position that was given to him by millions of $$$$ from questionable donors, and ACORN that deceptively secured votes from the living and dead! God help us all! !

Oppression, torture, and starvation
THe Obamanation will use oppression, torture, and starvation through the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS WORKERS. Quasi-government hate group of the : ACLU, NAACP, LULAC, GLAD, KKK, ARRYAN NATION, ACORN, BLACK PANTHERS, URBAN LEAGUE and other bigotry, prejudice race baiting, hate mongers relying on public funding through earmarks, grants, and other sources. The poor, handicapped, homeless, jobless, and the conservative minority will suffer while profits comes to unions, non-profit organizations, and religious organization. Kidnapping, identity theft, computer fraud, undue influence by law enforcement agents and elected officials to protect those volunteering violating RICO laws of United States and state where the criminal activity is occurring.

INAUGURATION TRANSLATION
To Charles: I read the negative and questioning comments to an article like this and I say to you, please keep translating Obama for me. You express my feelings in the most meaningful words. I say job well done and please keep telling the story as all the agendas evolve. Obama's agendas, the Democrat's agendas, and the leftist's agendas; who want to change America to something none of us will recognize.

To all who love America: we must find a way to communicate a vision of the new leftist America to the voting blocs that pushed Obama over the top. We must convince them that the consequences of this election and the one party rule in the Senate and House is not want they really want. It is not the change they really need.

How do we do this when talk radio, Fox News, the WSJournal only reach narrow demographics and the rest of the Mass Media, tied to the entertainment industry is making happy idiots out of the voters who voted for this feel good change?

Where I live, Rupert Murdoch withdrew his bid for the liberal Newsday Daily/Sunday newspaper. I wish he would open a small conservative Daily Newspaper that would drive a stake through the teetering NY Times and Newsday in the New York Metropolitan area. Not the New York Post, too tabloid, not the WSJournal, too high brow. A Conservative Newsday that a family needs to live on Long Island, but caters to the Peter King constituency.
If this was successful it could become a model for other regions and a foothold to combat the leftist media who will continue to pad their numbers and influence every election they can for the foreseeable future.

No meaning to it
While listening to Obama's speech I thought it was clunky, but it always seemed as though I was one of the few who was dazzled by Obama's style so I thought it was just me.

Yet, I've read so many different interruptions of his speech, parsing words, picking out a sentence, that it leads me to believe that trying to wring out any real meaning is useless. It was not inspiring, it was all over the map jumping from platitudes to what seemed to be lecturing of 2 year olds.

I also have the impression that Obama is not comfortable with being President. Perhaps that is something you have to grow into and some are better hiding it than others. However, it doesn't inspire confidence.

V
Your post amplifies my point. Obama's stand on abortion cannot be his own; he has been infused with it. Obama has 2 beautiful daughters and I am convinced he has never loved anyone or thing as much as he does his girls. To willfully destroy the opportunity for a Mother to experience that level of love for another, which she created, shows a dullness of position choice that defies logic. The motive can only be political expediency and that motive is detestable.

Phylo
I had no trouble understanding Rush's point: if Obama institutes all that he has SAID he will institute, American will be much closer to socialism. Rush does NOT want America to fail, he does not even want Obama to fail. He DOES want Obama to fail to change America from capitalism to socialism. What's so hard to understand?

Even if Obama is truly centrist (in contravention of everything he has said and done in the past), he will be contending with Pelosi & Reid and their solid Democrat followers in Congress. Those folks canNOT get enough power to suit them.

Mrs, Paddy
IMHO ACORN Hopey McChange now has to deliver and he KNOWS that he can’t do it. So he was dropping back on his promise, if effect he was voting PRESENT!

BTW did you hear Paul Shanklin’s Parody on Rush this week. Based of Paul Simon’s “I am a rock, I am an island”, it is entitled “I am Barack, I am Messiah”. LMAO! HIC! http://www.PaulShanklin.com

I thought the speech
was tacky and ridiculous as well as the whole affair.

Shame on me for expecting better.

Self contained? Try self absorbed.
Mr. Krauthammer rarely misses the mark, but maybe he fell under Oblahma's spell at dinner last week.
Barak O. is desperate to gain a crowd's approval, and he desperately wanted a speech for the ages. Observers have reported that Obama stands and watches his subjects as they disperse following one of his scripts so he can gage their reaction. That he doesn’t outwardly demonstrate a desire to be loved if not worshipped by the throngs, doesn’t mean the desire is absent.
The beltway conservatives have offered positive contributions to the political environment in the past, but they need to stand back from the charm and scripted eloquence of Obama. He’s a refined product of Chicago politics and he holds them in contempt. Every step Left Obama takes policy-wise, will be permanent. The beltway intellectuals could use an injection Limbaugh style common sense.
They are beyond naïve if they think Obama is anywhere near Center.

My Biracial Son's view of Mr. Obama
My smart 10 year old biracial son, and my daughter both "cornered" me early in the Pres. race and asked "Who are you voting for???"

I told them my views. Whilst I thot Mr. O. & Mrs. C. both smart politicians...my primary objection was...

both favor abortion on demand
...and Obama loves a "scorched earth" UBER abortion policy---

...anywhere anytime with a "leave no prisoners alive" (i.e. even a baby born alive in a failed abortion) horrific death policy...

Thus, my son, tho biracial child with a vague resemblance to Mr. Obama, has surprised people who are amazed he is not cheering Obama on. I let my kids form their own political judgment. So why is my son so ADAMANTLY not for Mr. Obama???

(Biracial Son was born to an undeage girl on the streets who was on drugs...Thus, he could have joined the current 50% of black children who are currently aborted---)

Siamese Twin
Obama is not smart. I have taught hundreds of students just like him. Obama must be nourished by another, any other. It can be the Reverend Wright, Ayers, or anyone else that stands next to him when he needs informational nourishment on any subject. Obama is not innovative, he is flat, he is dull, and worst yet he is a caricature of a President created in the Media's own Madam Trousseau image of phoniness. Obama will fail--you heard it here first--Obama is like a bull in a ring--he is being threatened from all sides as the Media continues to praise their hologram induced projection of excellence--Obama will be gored; he will fail. Truth is--Obama should fail, his history is replete with instances of persuasion and acceptance of the folly of others. Obama will believe what he is told; he will contradict himself without realization and deny he did it. Obama is not a liar, he believes everything he says, but his ability to juxtapose all his positions and appear honest is nonexistent. Too bad, I could like him but I cannot trust those from whom he accepts his transfusions of information and remedies.

While Everyone Seems to Imbibe KoolAid
those of us who doubt will continue to embrace our job as the canary in the mine.

Or the other obvious conclusion,
A very average person pretending to be more.

Being capable of dazzling other wordsmiths and the gullible isn't proof of the highest intellect, integrity, grit or good sense, and that is all he has done so far. Sorry Charles.

Read it and weep Reba
From Rasmussen:

• Texas: Approve 62%, Disapprove 35%. This includes 41% strong approval, and 19% strong disapproval.

• Tennessee: Approve 60%, Disapprove 35%. This includes 39% strong approval, and 21% strong disapproval.

The Speech
I sir disagree with you - this was a speech he wrote himself and notice he did not shine? Why do all the people say he is so brilliant - he's never achieved anything - always used his smooth talking great speech skills with someone else's writings - that was the precipice of his whole campaign but yet America believes he is brilliant! Where are his grades, his school records, his IQ level advertised - just like everything else he has done, it has been through the intelligence of others and this puppet will speak it eloquently! God Help Us! May you all wake up - SOON! My Great America I fear is on the path of destruction with this empty suit who believes in the communist manifesto!

insight into our leader

The Pres. is just full of IT. Not hard to understand.

WRONG PHYLO SE FISER

I don't know where you got your figures of Obama having a 62% approval rating in Texas.
We Texans are known to be friendly, but it does not take us long to look at a Hot Horse Shoe.

Think about it!

Maybe
I think that Obama was trying to stick with the truth. And Krauthammer, being an innately honest man with no desire to befuddle, responded similarly.

From my July Blog
From Pinocchio
There are No Strings on Me. Original by Leigh Harline, Ned Washington

OBAMA:
I’ve got no strings
That make me dance
To feed me lines, Give me a Chance
If I had strings
They’d bury me
You’ll see no strings on me

Hi Ho I’m Barry O.
I’m a puppet don’t you see?
I want the world to know
Naught should ever worry thee

You’ll see no strings
To make you frown
To tip my hand, with-hold my crown
I have wings
And you will see
Those angel wings on me

Dutch Puppet:
I see no strings
To worry me
We love you by the Zuider Zee
Ya Ya Ya
The Germans too
We’re in the tank for you.

French Puppet:
I see no strings
Qui parle pour vous?
Les Français voient votre jeu
Je vois des cordes
Juste entre nous
Qui d'autre parle pour vous ?

Terrorist Puppet:
We in Al Qaeda know
How to make war ebb and flow
We’d like the world to know
Barry should win place and show!

His Inaugural Speech
Perhaps it was common - and maybe he wrote it himself, without the aid of his leftist pros. Just the beginning of a long road to leftism, started by Jorge Bush, following in the footsteps of father.

Fascinating
It's truly fascinating to watch Republicans these days. I think Krauthammer genuinely likes and admires Obama. But he can't bring himself to fully support the man. He has to do what he can to give him a rhetorical jab here and there.

Obama is post-ideological, and the hard-core ideologues don't know how to react to that. Obama was right. The ground has shifted under the feet of ideologues who are stuck in old patterns of right/left dogma.

Listening to Prager, Medved, Limbaugh and Hannity is almost surreal these days. They are stuck in a time warp where they assume that there is still some merit to their beliefs that government is always the problem, lower taxes raises revenues for the government, regulation is always bad, aggressive foreign policy brings peace, etc.

And they are attacking Obama as if he's no different from the sixties leftists and Marxists.

Yesterday Rush was twisting himself in knots trying to explain why he hopes Obama's ideas fail. He couldn't bring himself to understand that he is rooting for The United States of America to fail. If Obama's idea's fail, this country is going down. We will be bankrupt as a nation. But Rush is so full of knee-jerk hatred for Democrats, he can't help himself. It would be funny if things weren't so serious.

Those of you who can't understand Kraut's begrudging admiration of Obama have to wonder if it's because he has met Obama, and knows him better than you do, and is more honest with himself than you.

Did you know Obama has a 62% approval rating––in Texas!

Phylo out.

Krauthammer
Gobbledygook.

Krauthammer clearly swooning
I did not expect Charles Krauthammer to be on a honeymoon with Obama since he was granted audience, but that seems to be the case.

Obama is already a disaster in the making. His cabinet is a mob of petty crooks and opportunists. Gone is the class and professionalism of Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, and Rice.

On day one of his presidency he has decided to treat hundreds of terrorists like drug dealers in federal courts.

He has promised to ban new drilling and we will feel this come summer time in the way of gas prices. Whether it's this summer or the next we will feel it.

He is one of a handful of senators who voted against the Born Alive Infant Protection Act and already we're smelling the funding of overseas abortion counseling via US taxpayer.

He is going to fire a volley of high taxation on business owners and corporations resulting in massive layoffs.

He's going to grow government on a scale not seen since FDR.

And Krauthammer is writing that he is "subtle?"

I've always thought him arrogant and a poor speaker. There is nothing subtle about Obama.

This is a surpirse that BHO is paper
thin? He and Michelle make nice Barbie dolls.

Make no mistake, there is a plan for America and it will happen on schedule through Obama's puppet masters. This entire mess is so loathsome and grim, it should have been written by a Russian author like Dostoevsky.

I still read articles by worthy authors, but abhor TV. We're stocking up the house with the basics for when the sh!! hits the fan.

Be Careful What youWish For
Everyone says Obama wrote his own speech. What can we make of that? It was a bit of a re-hash of his stump speeches, and a bit of the hype about the historic nature of electing a man of color to POTUS.

We still have not embraced MLK's Dream where a man is judged not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character.

I believe most Americans have moved from the race issue, but our political system has not (EO, Quotas, "hyphenated" Americans, identity politics, Political Correctness etc).

If we are Americans all...why is there conflict? Disagreement, yes! Conflict? Emphasis on race only creates conflict. Just as pitting any group against another causes conflict.

The questions we must ask are these: What will be furthered by continuing to address the issue of racism over Americanism? What are we trying to achieve as a nation? Does race as an in-your-face topic achieve division or unity?

W went to Washington as a 'Uniter' too...look how far he got.

Judging by the Executive orders he instituted this week, and his reliance upon his legal counselor to clarify his verbal explanations, I lean to the camp that says he is a puppet.

If so, he is riding on the immunity provided under the guise of 'racism' should anyone disagree with him. He's riding on the immunity of his 'idol' status, and the 'hope' that his election really does say something good about America and Americans.

He has already set the stage to pursue war crimes and indictments of former Presidents and VPs with his EO releasing records inspite of the wishes of his predecessors.

It will be interesting to see how much hope and change it brings to our nation when GITMO is closed.

False Premise / False Hopes
If you start with a false premise (i.e., that government can fix the social problems with America) then all you can offer is false hope. Our social ills can only be repaired one person and one family a time, by espousing and following a workable moral code. But time and time again, we have rejected religion and morality. Just yesterday, another judge threw out a moment of silence law as "unconstitutional." When mere silence is construed as the promotion of religion, we are truly up a creek without a paddle. George Washington: "Let us with caution indulge the assumption that morality can be maintained without religion."

So much for lowering the oceans
Very soon the American public will come to realize that the rock concert is over and we are left with a hung-over never-was poser. It's the morning after and the party was a great memory. Too bad the morning after is scheduled to last four years.

BARACK OBAMA: NOWHERE MAN
Krauthammer is mistaken to believe that Obama doesn't crave adulation. This is an empty, unprincipled nowhere man with no core values or coherent world view, whose strength is a false and artificial fortitude (derived from a psychic trick learned from his Pastor); a man who wants to be all things to all men, who is inclusive to the point of incoherency, and wants everyone to love and adore him. Indeed, the first President in U.S. history to bungle the oath of office was a fitting prelude to his listless, aimless anticlimatic speech. If you want insight into the real Barack Obama click ApolloSpeaks and read my "Obama Maharaj Ji: the Secret of Obama's Hypnotic Powers" and "Barack Obama, Lincoln and the Image of Presidential Greatness."

P got it right
By most any objective assessment, CK is the most brilliant analyst on today's political scene. (Here it comes...wait for it, wait...) BUT, as P mentioned, lasting impressions from dinner at the Will residence keep appearing in his writing. I hope he snaps out of it very soon.

Dear Charles,

Your platitudes toward Obama are what is truly stunning. He can do no wrong in your eyes; a good speech merits worship, as does a mediocre one.

Incredible...what has happened to you, my hero?

Lowery
I'm still trying tocomprehend Lowery's prayer.....

"when black will not be asked to give back" what, their welfare checks? The houses they can't pay for? child support for their kids?what?

"when brown can stick aroun'"
when they come in the front door, they are welcome, what's his point here?

"when yellow is mellow"
Ever met one who wasn't?

where the red man can get ahead man?
They have already been given the positions of the Las Vegas mobsters without the oversight, what more can they want? Casinos make BILLIONS

"where white embraces what's right"
This one I get, boot all the leftist loons into China, or maybe Cuba. that I can get

roadmaster
I stand by my comments on neocons.

And if you assert that critiquing our policy toward Israel is anti-semitic, then presumably you believe that critiquing policies of Obama is anti-black.

And since you bring up Jimmy Carter, his undermining of the Shah had the effect of leading to a Shia theocratic government in Iran.

Is that so different than a G.W. Bush toppling of Saddam Hussein, which had the effect of creating a Shia theocratic Iraq that few doubt will now work more closely than Saddam ever did with a more powerful Iran?

Speech vs Krauthammer
Dr., do hope you have not succumbed to the web Obama spins. We desperately need Conservative voices to eloquently speak out against the disease taking over our country.

THE FICTION OF PRESIDENTIAL GREATNESS
You will notice that Obama's inauguration speech was joyless and deflating lacking passion, vigor and energy; that it was uneven and unsteady, rising and falling, ebbing and flowing with no stirring moment or grace. Indeed, the man who impatiently and passionately ran for the presidency, who raised hopes to the sky promising transformational change and world leaderdip for a new age, has lost much of his flare now that he's there. Now that he sees the enormity of the task, the cross he must bear he fears it will crush him and that he will fail. The new President who spoke today isn't the same victorious winner of November 4th who gushed with gladness and inspiration at his Grant Park celebration. For he's now having trouble rising to the occassion as his ignorance and inexperience overtake him..

not to rely on
"skill or vision of those in high office,"

Oh yeah, that's the line the down stream media will chisel in granite.

Didn't everyone's parents teach that basic truth at about 9 years old?

Since the aforementioned DSM swears up and down that BO wrote his own speech, I can only conclude that he is a lousy writer. He should have enlisted the services of whoever wrote his books.

Jerabaub, I hope you're not one of those who uses "neocon" to cover your antisemitism? In my opinion, Washington's farewell was to a much different time, when a young, fledgling country needed to focus on it's own problems. In the modern age, we who are the biggest on the block have a responsibility to at least try to spread some of our better virtues around. Turning bad actors away from evil, or getting rid of them altogether suits our national interest in the long run.

The "neocon" vision for a reformed Islam is certainly a paradigm shift from the miserable failures of Carter and Clinton. Placating the enemy is never wise.

I believe the real thrust of Bush's injection of liberty was aimed at the Muslim women. That's what finally got the Irish men to quit killing each other - their women cut them off until they sat down at the peace table. I'm not hopeful this will work, as Muslim women aren't all that desirable. I think Sec Rice started out with good intentions, but slid back to the same old, same old.

Peace is ONLY reached when one side is totally defeated and has no other option. When Muslim's love their children more than they hate Israelis, we may have a chance, but it seems as remote as ever with the return of failed policies of the past.

I'll stick with Israel. I pray that ALL of their enemies come to a bad end.

Hungry people
Was looking forward to read his take on BHO after the “historical reach out diner”… and I don’t think he’s been left hungry after it.. Charles Krauthammer feels and knows more when he says:
“We have no way of knowing. A complicated man, this new president. Opaque, contradictory and subtle. And that's just day one.”
And he is worried…

I suggest BHO is as complicated as we make it while wishfully feeding our hope that reality will change the President who’s goal is to change reality!

History shows us that the only way to deal with politicians of such “opaque, contradictory, subtle” characters, is by straight talk and uncompromised commitment to clear stated principles… and this is what the people are hungry for!

incongruous.
Krauthammer tells us Obama reached back to George Washington in his inaugural speech a few days ago.

Could be that Charles is correct.

If so, I hope Obama will take note of George Washington's "Farewell Address to the American People", where the first president cautions our nation against forming unnatural attachments to foreign peoples or nations, such that the attachments distort our vision and blind us to what constitute our own national interests.

In that context, perhaps George Washington, with his emphasis upon non interventionism and suspicion of foreign entanglements, would take a dim view of today's neocons with their unnatural attachments to Israel, and even to the neocon crusade to remake the Muslim world.

That the neocon Krauthammer would cite George Washington, the father of our Blessed Republic, is incongruous.

can't win for losing
Krauthammer is like a number of other conservative commentators: he can't decide what he wants to say when it comes to Obama. During the campaign, Krauthammer went off on Obama because Obama was trying to be inspirational. Now Krauthammer goes off on Obama because the inaugural speech was NOT inspirational.

not surprised
Obama is an empty suit, lacking any new ideas or thoughts, so how can he be motivated to say anything inspiring? No surprise. His popularity is in his style. He is an American Idol president. How did he perform? On a scale of one to ten, maybe a three? He is a power-hungry, glory seeker. Poor guy. He's a puppet of the left, groomed for the job and his handlers know how to make him move and tell him what to say. If I were he, I would be afraid to say anything. It might lower my poll numbers or make the angry left angrier. I just wonder who the puppet master is? Soros?

The Puppet Speaks
King O has always said just exactly what he is told to say. After having found out those things that candidates are not told, including what he cannot do and what he may not do, he had to re-write his Messiah Speech and give the one that would tone the shrieking, fainting teenagers down.

Remember: King O is a puppet. He speaks those words posted on the teleprompter for him to say. The fact that he is actor enough to deliver them about as well as the Jonas Brothers can sing is really irrelevant, after all.

Raging Centrist
Yes they are borrowing money, but that well is just about dry. The government is also (as Bush did) printing money as well.

If you want the government out of the private sector, which I agree with, then a combination of tax cutting (both income and capital gains) coupled with doing away with many of the unsuccessful, unlawful, and unnecessary government programs would be a good start. That, however, is not going to happen.

Obama, has asked everyone (I don't think that includes the poor) to sacrifice. Notice that our government has not done any sacrificing since Calvin Cooledge.

Bu the way, what is a Centrist? I suppose that means one isn't extreme is neither right nor left politically. I do not believe in democracy as a form of government. I believe in a democratic republic. Is that Centrist?

Reality or Rhetoric?
Could it be that Obama is now facing the fact of the awesome burden of the Presidency?

How empty rhetoric, so pleasing to his true believers, will not get him one day of peace in the Oval Office?

Perhaps the traditional values of his white grandmother and father, who bore the real burdens of caring for him while his irresponsible mother and father did their selfish wanderings about the world, are having more meaning now that Obama can no longer just vote "present"?

Obama is
a "schmoozer".
Thanks for the piece Mr. K :)

Reply to Dr J #5
It is well documented and all over the media that Obama did indeed right this speech. He wants us to be patient and wait--until he figures out what is doing, or can do as President. Promising everything in a campaign, Obama knows will be difficult to deliver. I am sure, unfortunately, that the media will make light of his mistakes (unlike Bush), and that he will probably get credit for winning Iraq (thanks to Bush), but the economy will be a thorn for him. We have him now, and I believe he will start right away campaigning for his next four years. And as we saw in the campaign, many voted for him because he was not conservative, and I firmly believe that will happen again--in force.

Yawn
Prez "BO," is an empty suit. It is not hard to imagine him clinging to his blackberry, puffing on a ciggy, and wondering what to do.

It is interesting that he just "popped in" to shake hands with the press. Unless it is scripted, and placed on a teleprompter, he is lost. The man can say nothing in a thousand words.

Finally, what is this drawl and cadence that he has when he speaks?

Harrison
You are incorrect. Obama isn't printing the money, he is borrowing it from China, Saudi Arabia, et al. Just like Bush did for 8 years to the tune of $5 trillion. It doesn't cause inflation, but it surely increases the burdensome national debt. The interest on the National Debt is hundreds of billions of dollars paid that gets us absolutely no services at all from the government.

However, I agree that bailouts, tax cuts, tax rebates, TARPs, and other government largesse are not the answer. It wasnt' during Bush's administration, and it's not this time either. The idea is to get the government out of the financial sector, not to get more deeply involved. These politicians just don't get it.

Protect and Defend
I find it amazing that a president. who is supposedly a Constitutional scholar and who pledged to protect and defend that same constitution, would have as one of his first acts a clear violation of that same Constitution.

Article One Section ten of the Constitution of the United States says that the state shall make no thing tender in payment of debt other than gold or silver coin. This was, as any scholar knows, was put in the Constitution because the Founding Fathers had seen head of foreign countries inflate their country's currency by printing money thereby robbing wealth from their country's people. Yet, Obama begins his presidency by printing money to the tune of hundred of billions of dollars.

Yes, politicians have done this many times before. But, I thought this was to be a new beginning. This is not a new beginning this is the beginning of the problems American will not be able to find its way out of. I am afraid that Mr. Obama, in violating his oath in this way, could well bring about significant destruction of our economy. Runaway inflation is almost certainly the future for this president.

I am sure, however, as Democrats have done for years, Obama will find a way to blame this on others (most likely through the mainstreammedia) . But, Obama may not find it so easy to pass the blame on this one.

Krauthammer
Krauthammer is such a petty little man. He is filled with sour grapes. The Bush apologist lives on. He would rather see Obama fail as president than to see him accomplish all that Bush could not do.

I didn't vote for Obama, but I'm not rooting for him to fail like Krauthammer and his ilk. We need to get this country back on track, and if it takes Obama and the Democrats to do it, then so be it.

Leaving the people hungry
Don't forget that President Obama does not write his own speeches and who knows how much input he had.Today's politicians are packaget from the time they get up in the morning to the time they go to bed in the evening and if they step out of line they usually get into trouble. All of President Lincoln's famous speeches were written by him and not speechwriters and that might be the reason why they are so memorable.

brilliance
I always love Charles' brilliance!!!

Thank you!

Scared
I believe that when the "One" learned what truly lay before him, he chucked the real speech, as too optimistic. When he was afforded the truth about the economy, safety of the nation (and all that entails), he undoubtedly became afraid that perhaps he had promised too much. I think, perhaps, candidates for office need to one-up the opponent so much, they become their own wosrt enemy. Barack Obama is a perfect example of this: First with Hillary, then McCain. Now, with the left screaming for the "change" he promised, and no way to modify his positions without disappointing everyone. Honeymoon?

A speech to remember... or forget...
It is amazing, since he had so much time since election day to prepare the speech that he gave on Tues. I was surprised as well by the lack of punch, though it goes well with a man who has lacked experience and lacked the ability to provide details for his sweeping ideas. However, being in Europe this week, the speech resonated well here, with the Europeans feeling like the US is moving more towards their camp and government structure. God help us.

Clarification of earlier post
Mr. Krauthammer, I read what I wrote and realize it was full on words and quotes and little meaning. What I wanted to say is that I am troubled by the intense fascination and unchecked admiration for President Obama expressed in your essay. When you conclude that anything short of brilliant from President Obama must be intentional and part of a grander scheme or plan, and therefore brilliance itself, I think you have lost all objectivity and rationality and gone to the level of worshipful fan. Will your adulation for his "complicated" and "nimble" mind and charming personality lead you to find irrational explanations for occasions in the future where his words, decisions, or conduct conflict with your own opinions?

I am writing this as someone who has enjoyed much of what you have written in the past.

Another fan letter
I do not recall your description of his Germany speech or nomination speech as magical or dazzling or lyrical. Now you write as if this is the first time you thought President Obama was less than magical.

Rhetoric, is the effective use of language to influence or persuade. I think if we are to judge his speech by your reaction, it was a very successful. You believe that "Obama is so clearly capable of more" that failure to do so must be intentional to "advance his goals, his programs, his ambitions". For you "it is the only way to understand the mediocrity of his inaugural address."

After the hype of re-enacting Lincoln's train ride, using Lincoln's bible for the public oath, and spending 170 million dollars on the inaugural, to think that Obama would purposefully gave a bland, mediocre speech. Amazing. I actually thought he tried to give a memorable, historical speech, but failed short. But then, I also thought the expensive inaugural celebrations and the train trip were signs he craved adulation.

"We have no way of knowing. A complicated man, this new president. Opaque, contradictory and subtle." I think you are making him out to be more complicated than he is.

I guess you enjoyed your dinner with President Obama, "which seems to me the only way to understand the" soft reasoning of this essay and the creative interpretation of when "white will embrace what is right".

Does Obama really get the Founders?
Progressives say that the limitations the Founders put on the federal government followed solely from their rejection of King George's totalitarianism. Therefore, these limitations do not apply to democratic self-government, which authorizes the federal government to encroach on and annex the powers reserved to the people so long as the people have voted for the same. In other words, the people's will may not be denied by the Founders or their dead-letter constitution, which does not reserve the liberties the people do not want reserved.

But under the progressive vision for America, what is to prevent the people from establishing by democratic means totalitarian self-government? Perhaps only the lack of a universally beloved, charismatic president capable of convincing the people that they are better off controlled in every particular than free in them. Now that America has such a president and such a people inclined to surrender their birthrights to him, we shall see what the progressive vision brings.

Since the media and the people are supine in their worshipful reverence for President Obama, he will decide how much of the power that was once reserved to the people he will annex. That he seems to be backing away from his messianic campaign promises is encouraging. But the problems confronting America are mountainous and will not yield to mere charm or words, so I suspect that once President Obama discovers this, he will seize whatever power he needs to avoid failure. Predicting this, I can say with confidence that President Obama does not really get the Founders.

America is Ready to lead.

How can Obama say that with a straight face since he has never lead his entire political career?

Voting "Present" on tough issues is not leading.

It is the secret briefings....
Things untold to him before now take the gild off of the lily of change. For example we find a GITMO ex-prisoner went to Alcada and now it the Chief. So much for those nice folks we are abusing. We find there were terrorist attacts that actually were stopped in time to save lives here in the US. What we really do not know may make the slant on running the country a bit different than just change. After all the Rep's may have been doing a few things right. He now knows it is not what he thought. He has a right to be dour.

He closes GITMO without a plan. Just to have something to point to, but while this move is not reckless is certainly is haphazard for a POTUS. Not one State in the Country will accept these prisoners.

He comes up with a Dem's dream of a spending bill rather than a job creation bill. The monies alotted for job creation is actually rather skimpy.

So much for the first day.
