Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

"I don't know what Caroline Kennedy's qualifications are. Except that she has name recognition, but so does J-Lo."

-- Rep. Gary Ackerman, D-N.Y.

WASHINGTON -- Right idea, wrong argument. The problem with Caroline Kennedy's presumption to Hillary Clinton's soon-to-be-vacated Senate seat is not lack of qualification or experience. The Senate houses lots of inexperienced rookies -- wealthy businessmen, sports stars, even the occasional actor.

The problem is Kennedy's sense of entitlement. Given her rather modest achievements, she is trading entirely on pedigree.

I hate to be a good government scold, but wasn't the American experiment a rather firm renunciation of government by pedigree?

Yes, the Founders were not democrats. They believed in aristocracy. But their idea was government by natural -- not inherited -- aristocracy, an aristocracy of "virtue and talents," as Jefferson put it.

And yes, of course, we have our own history of dynastic succession: Adamses and Harrisons, and in the last century, Roosevelts, Kennedys and Bushes. Recently, we've even branched out into Argentine-style marital transmission, as in the Doles and the Clintons.

It's not the end of the world, but it is an accelerating trend that need not be encouraged. After all, we have already created another huge distortion in our politics: a plethora of plutocrats in the U.S. Senate, courtesy of our crazed campaign finance laws. If you're very very rich, you can buy your Senate seat by spending as much of your money as you want. Meanwhile, your poor plebeian opponent is running around groveling for the small contributions allowed by law. Hence the Corzines and the Kohls, who parachute into Congress seemingly out of nowhere.

Having given this additional leg up to the rich, we should resist packing our legislatures with yet more privileged parachutists, the well-born.

True, the Brits did it that way for centuries, but with characteristic honesty. They established a house of Parliament exclusively for highborn twits and ensconced them there for life. There they chatter away in supreme irrelevance deep into their dotage. Problem is that the U.S. Senate retains House of Commons powers even as it develops a House of Lords membership.

Don't get me wrong. I have nothing against Caroline Kennedy. She seems a fine person. She certainly has led the life of a worthy socialite helping all the right causes. But when the mayor of New York endorses her candidacy by offering, among other reasons, that "her uncle has been one of the best senators that we have had in an awful long time," we've reached the point of embarrassment.

Nor is Ms. Kennedy alone in her sense of entitlement. Vice President-elect Biden's Senate seat will now be filled by Edward Kaufman, a family retainer whom no one ever heard of before yesterday. And no one will hear from after two years, at which time Kaufman will dutifully retire. He understands his responsibility: Keep the Delaware Senate seat warm for two years until Joe's son returns from Iraq to assume his father's mantle.

This, of course, is the Kennedy way. In 1960, John Kennedy's Senate seat was given to his Harvard roommate, one Ben Smith II (priceless name). He stayed on for two years -- until Teddy reached the constitutional age of 30 required to succeed his brother.

In light of the pending dynastic disposition of the New York and Delaware Senate seats, the Illinois way is almost refreshing. At least Gov. Rod Blagojevich (allegedly) made Barack Obama's seat democratically open to all. Just register the highest bid, eBay style.

Sadly, however, even this auction was not free of aristo-creep. On the evidence of the U.S. attorney's criminal complaint, a full one-third of those under consideration were pedigreed: Candidate No. 2 turns out to be the daughter of the speaker of the Illinois House; Candidate No. 5, the first-born son of the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

Caroline Kennedy, Beau Biden and Jesse Jackson Jr. could some day become great senators. But in a country where advantages of education, upbringing and wealth already make the playing field extraordinarily uneven, we should resist encouraging the one form of advantage the American Republic strove to abolish: title.

No lords or ladies here. If Princess Caroline wants a seat in the Senate, let her do it by election. There's one in 2010. To do it now by appointment on the basis of bloodline is an offense to the most minimal republicanism. Every state in the union is entitled to representation in the Senate. Camelot is not a state.

Wake Up New York
As Caroline Kennedy floats through her "non-campaign" stops with that vague style of her late mother - I keep hoping this is a joke. Like some pampered Princess she doesn't even acknowledge questions of any substance - just smiles and nods like those dolls we used to have in the back windows of cars.
I love the reference to money raising. All she did was twist the arms of wealthy friends for her charities - knowing they would twist her arm for theirs. She just appears to be bored and in need of a new activity to keep her occupied. Being a Senator of one of our most populated states shouldn't be reduced to a rich woman's newest hobby.

Best line, summing it up
" But when the mayor of New York endorses her candidacy by offering, among other reasons, that "her uncle has been one of the best senators that we have had in an awful long time," we've reached the point of embarrassment."

The dupes of NY
Unfortunately, New York State has a long history of inserting high profiled carpetbaggers into their senate seats. (eg. Robert Kennedy started his brief senate career, such as it was, from New York.)

And New York will continue to act as the dhimmi floor mat because all that's left in that economically bleak state is dependent wards and liberal elites. (Gov Patterson is having trouble finding anything left to tax that hasn't already fled).

Currently, she's on a Clinton-ese 'listening tour' - she can't answer questions the plebians irreverently ask because she so bereft of answers. Just bobble her head and routinely smile, painfully revealing a wrinkled, botoxed face that looks linen the iron has stuck to.

Just forget her name is Schlossberg - she's been legitimized by a Kennedy sperm!

Ugly and Unqualified
Caroline Kennedy is the Lib Dem answer to Sarah Palin except Caroline lacks the government executive leadership experience of a county council person, mayor and state governor. Also Caroline is ugly due to the botoxed wrinkles and walks like a truck driver.
Lib Dems though are not concerned about qualifications, not even verification of eligibility until Obama releases sufficient records to show he is a natural born U.S. citizen.

The Historian in CA
I may live to be as old as Redford. I am close already.
I will never understand, however, why anyone pays any attention to entertainers on any matters other than entertainment. They are among our society's least educated.
Redford blew a college baseball scholarship, dabbled in art and took some classes in set design. He shows no real education beyond a high school diploma.
So, as you say, he is among those who'd best keep their mouths shut lest people realize how ignorant they are.

Take heed of old adages
And be careful what you wish for, the last I heard, Al Sharpton was alive, well, ready and willing.

And did I mention that he's better suited to bring about the right balance of diversity to our Senate? We surely must keep that in mind, after all.

New York gets what it deserves.

Representation By Reputation?
Excellent piece Dr. Krauthammer. Too bad your evidence paints a disturbing picture.

It now appears as though America's entitlement malaise is linked to a mysterious contagion that has shown to be extremely resistant to common logic. This "societal" contagion is being transmitted through a process that has been described as "reverse social Darwinism." Initial studies have led many experts to believe that the primary vector is likely the self-described, "oppressed proletariat." While those most susceptible to infection appear to be: social highbrows with accompanying political aspirations.

Democratic pedigree...
... seems preferable to the party's rank-and-file. Maybe they know that about themselves. Whereas the typical rank-and-file Republican could run the country if called upon to do so. Most have, at least, read the Constitution.

ALL IN THE FAMILY
As a King marries a Queen to birth a son to be Heir to the Throne, Princess Caroline has stepped up to the plate to fill her brothers rightful place, had he not met his tragic death.
Royalty has always viewed their 'destiny' as their 'congenital' birthright.
American society today is mesmerized by the dream world of virtual reality, instead of the 'reality' of the hard work it takes to realize the 'American Dream'. Past generations 'enjoyed' fairy tales, knowing they were fiction. Today, Americans are 'enchanted' by them and have come to believe they can live them as well.
barry was elected because he will make it so. That is, until the story ends. Or there's an indefinite 'power outage' to all TVs and computers in our Country.

Undone
Our ancestors fought two wars -- long, bitter ones that they nearly lost -- to be rid of foreign overlords and inbred dynasts. Their achievement began to crumble almost immediately, when one group of fools offered Washington a crown. After two centuries of further erosion, we've awarded the presidency to a probable foreigner who evidently welcomed foreign contributions and certainly campaigned on foreign soil. The Revolution has been undone. Why not go ahead and fill the Senate with Kennedys, Bidens, and other aristocratic trash? Why not abandon all that tiresome lip service to the Founders?

If I bother voting in 2012, maybe I'll support Nicolas Sarkozy. He's more American than the jerk we just elected.

Usage note
Dr. Krauthammer, Caroline Kennedy is, as you say, already a princess. Her wish, then, is not to be anointed, but to be _restored_ to her rightful rule, as the Stuarts were.

It's sign of the times
When a man can be elected president without portfolio beyond having written two books about himself; having no qualification beyond birth name must also be acceptable.

Doesn't the state of new york have anybody who knows something about working for a living?

I thought this was a ejoke when I first read it.

New Yorkers love carpetbaggers.
Bobby Kennedy, Hillary Clinton and now, princess Caroline. They certainly do not care if she is a box of rocks like her brother and her mother.

Darn Straight
Paleocon said:

"Why not abandon all that tiresome lip service to the Founders?"

Might as well. It hasn't carried anything of real substance since Reagan was guiding us.

"If I bother voting in 2012, maybe I'll support Nicolas Sarkozy. He's more American than the jerk we just elected."

Sad... True.

US Republic Is Dead
"Elections are becoming increasing irrelevant as the political class becomes a new aristocracy" - truer words have not be spoken.

From Princess Caroline to a comedian like Franken in Minnesota to even Barry O - all are celebrities or have used huge amounts of Hollywood/celebrity power to rise in political power.

The media is overwhelmingly liberal democrat leaning to the point that the public does not have the benefit of an active, honest journalism, so as to discern what is going on in a factual, balanced way. Instead, today's media (which isn't journalism) is nothing but "advocacy journalism" or they act like the PR Dept. of the government class (NY, DC Beltway, Hollywood).

The US Republic is dead.

Seat of Entitlement
Great article! Unfortunately most Amercians remain woefully unaware of why Caroline Kennedy's sense of entitlement to the senate seat is a bad thing. We SHOULD CONTINUE to reference our founding fathers to the contrary belief of others and FURTHERMORE maybe consider actions they would have taken right about now anyway.......REVOLT!
NOW GET BACK TO WORK! Millions of illegal immigrants on welfare are depending on you!
Global warming is a HOAX!
Peac Out

Re: Plutocrats
PRICELESS article, a "keeper" Charlie. Should be required reading by all Americans.

If
ABC,CBS,MSNBC, etc. want her in there, that's what we'll get.

The people that voted for a Kenyan as President
must be dewormed before voting for another damn Kennedy if America is to survive....make that, come back to life.

What????
What about the Clinton woman who swooped into New York from Washington D.C???? She never lived in New York, she never held a public position and she was trading on the Clinton name. Why all the criticism of Caroline when Clinton was so obvious in her taking over of the NY senate seat due to a sense of entitlement. I'm tired of all this ranting about Caroline when we sere subjected to the Queenie Clinton and her blatant quest for power. Caroline contributes integrity, a lot of work in education for New York and lots of experience with foreign leaders from her work at the Kennedy Library. I guess all these people commenting on the negative are either jealous of the Kennedy name and/or they are blind to the Clinton arrogant swoop into NY for her run for the White House......

A True Trucker
As Ronald in FL points out, not only does Caroline walk like a trucker, she talks like one too!

Her blatant arrogance seems to be at least equaled by her appearing to be not too bright.

These days, she's a perfect fit for so many of the losers who occupy seats in Congress, esp. the Senate.....how very sad -- and bad for us!

Term limits
I keep saying we need term limits of two terms for every branch of Government except the Supremes. I think two terms is enough time for the greedies to get all they can and set themselves up for life. They need to give other people a chance. Unfortunately, the greedies control everything and t will never happen. Just like a fair flat tax. We just need to brace ourselves and learn Chinese.

BREAKING NEWS !!!!

SALE OF EXECUTIVE PANTS SUITS IN NEW YORK DOWN 50%.

P.S. Does anyone know how much Caroline spent on her wardrobe?

People are Tuned Out
I read yesterday that ony 7% rate Obama as liberal. There are so many lies and conflicting spins that people are skeptical and must not feel it is worthwhile to dig for the truth. After all, they are all crooks, anyway. Aren't they?

Nepotism thy name is Kennedy

Q: What's the difference between a Kennedy and a pit bull?

A: About 50 million dollars and a feckin prada handbag.

Camelot Fever
Ever since Caroline and the pmm (Propaganda Media Machine) came out for Oblaba and compared him to the youthful and bright JFK the boomers have been looking for more reminders of their youth. For years I called the Clinton era Camelot-lite. Fellow Conservatives beware. We have officially begun Camelot II.

The Kennedy's have always ...
The Kennedy's entitlement mentalities & egos have always offended me! I look at qualifications not blood lines. Which BTW came from a big crook, their father running illegal booze!! Wow - that is really a great recommendation!

Other than for President, I have had no way to vote against the Kennedys! Another annointed Kennedy? Bah Humbug this Christmas season! IMHO!

History in making
We are entering a unique event in our history NOT because BHO is black, nor because his citizenship is questionable, but that SOCIALISM/ MARXISM is now officially ensconced in the U. S. of A. There is no peaceful means of turning back. It will take a revolution to oust the established socialist/Marxist elite. Let us hope it will be a bloodless one.
I believe that is why the left-wingers want to abolish or seriously cripple our Second Amendment: take away the means of forcibly
overthrowing their oppressive governmental rule. Thomas Jefferson stated that it is the responsibility of citizens to overthrow the
government if it becomes oppressive.

Kennedys and Truck drivers...
Please stop disparaging the good name of truck drivers with comparisons to this family of inept, drunken weasels. My apologies to weasels...

Kennedy Vs. Palin
Sarah Palin was tarred and feathered daily by the MSM and the Democrats for accepting the nomination of the Republican Vice President. Sarah was subject to a daily army of reporters searching everywhere to discredit her and her family.

Here comes Princess Caroline and the MSM and the Democratic Party swoon just like they swoon for Hussein Usbamma.

Sean Hannity hit the nail on the head. 2008 is the year journalism died.

Caroline Kennedy should get some governing experience before running for the Senate. Sarah Palin did.

Qualified New Yorker?
Doe New York not have anyone who was born in the state who is qualified to represent them in the U.S. Senate? I believe they do, but they must think not, for they keep electing ambitious people from other states who fly in and announce they are New Yorkers? They stay long enough to register as a candidate, get elected, and then head to Washington.

Del

Name Recognition
Even Bernard Goetz, Mark Chapman, and Jack the Ripper have name recognition!

Ronald
Don't you think it's a little embarrassing that you're calling Caroline Kennedy ugly? I'm not sure which is sadder, if you're actually (not) voting for someone because of looks over skills, or you don't think that way but you're trying to score some cheap easy points. Sad.

noboma and the MSM
Why does it not surprise you--the goverment is gone as we knew it.--Time past for a overhaul--wake up people--get out your weapons and take back our country.

No one target--congress!

Ronald
Does Ronald Reagan fit into this category as a former actor? That's why I don't like blanket statements. . .

The older the world gets
The worse the subjects to talk about become.
Just to have to talk about this situation is enough to gag a maggot.

Blag in Chicago has done a service for the country, the thief showed everyone what American Politics are all about.

Same here with this,no proof of any leadership required, just have the right name.

I hate everything the media, politicians and pundits, like Charlie here wants to talk about.
meanwhile we have an impostor headed for the WH

A fine senator for New York
Now Caroline Kennedy could not a win an election to dog catcher where I live and would never get my vote.

She does not represent my views and will probably NOT vote the way I would want her to on most bills.

However, I am a Republican in GA and she is a Liberal in NY.

I used to live in a liberal state like NY (I am from Phila PA) but had the good sense to leave and move to where people are polite, and hold to the values and traditions that made our country great (plus the fishing is better down here).

Ms Kennedy has what a NY senator should have. The ability to connect to the people there and she will have the ability to get things done in the Senate that the majority of her state will approve. (The majority in GA will disapprove of what she does but she is in NY afterall)

She has a clear desire to help her state. The way she will try to help in my opinion will be misguided, but her extensive work in charity organizations shows her concern. Actually her pick is better then another politico democrat party hack.

I wager she wins re-election in 2010, like I said it is NY we are talking about.

Hope everyone has a happy Chanukah Sunday night, and a Merry Christmas next week.

BETWyan
Just FYI, his name is President Elect Barack Obama, not BarryO. Show him the respect that he deserves as a current member of the United States Senate and the future President of the United States.

No more dynasties
Charles nails it here. I've had a bellyfull of the Clintons, Bushes, Kennedys, Jacksons, and now Biden has apparently got a placeholder for his senate seat who will obediently step aside once Biden's son is ready to mount the throne in 2-3 years.

And it's not just the fact that these corrupt (and corrupting) dynasties exist...it's the sense of smug entitlement they display.

Dr. Krauthammer is right - - - -
- - - as usual. But even he omits that other factor so prominent in today's media: her name is Caroline Kennedy SCHLOSSBERG. And, until quite recently, when this ploy toward extreme senatorial grandure was advanced, and the cheerleading press started its loud tooting, she was, indeed, Mrs. Schlossberg. Betcha won't hear her married name any more, at least until she reassumes "civilian" status...

Paris Hilton for the NY Senate Seat
I would like to propose Paris Hilton for the NY senate seat vacated by Hillary Clinton, based on the following:

- She's rich, so she has no need to accept lobbyist bribes.

- She starred in a sex tape seen by almost half the world, so she's virtually un-blackmail-able.

- She's originally from New York. (I realize this isn't really a qualification to be a NY senator, but it might make a nice change.)

- She's wildly successful in her field.

- Not only is she a famous, successful celebrity, she has famous, successful family members.

- And most importantly, she has no children. After all the comments how Sarah Palin couldn't be both a mother and a veep, this here alone makes Hilton far, far more qualified for such an important position than Caroline Kennedy, who has several children. (Or so she claims. Of course, we don't know if CK's children are really hers. No one's seen a DNA test, have they? I'm sure Andrew Sullivan will be demanding one forthwith.)

Dave
His name is President Elect Barack Obama, not Hussein Usbamma. . .

Community Service As A Model
Ernest in FL, you are the original Chicken LIttle, running in circles screaming that the sky is once again falling in right-wing America. Get over it. The Presidnet Elect IS black, he IS an American in spite of that fact, socialism and Marxism is no more alive in this country today than it has been for the previous decades that our tax dollars have been thrown at an ailing auto industry (and by not a few Republicans). "...no PEACEFUL means of turning back...?" Why do you guys always think the best way is "turning back," anyway? Oh yeah, never mind. Left-wingers are not trying to abolish any rights, I own a gun, my husband owns a gun and no one's asked for them and the only thing that's become "oppressive" around here is this continued, seemingly endless right-wing hand-wringing, tear-shedding, pants-wetting palaver about revolutions and ruin. Stop whining and find the importance of being Ernest. Volunteer or take some action. Caroline Kennedy grew up in a family who valued community service for the betterment of people everywhere. This woman is undertaking this step in the realization that family members died for no better reason than that they chose to serve this country. She is educated, well-spoken, and probably won't be caught with her hand in any government tills. I hope New Yorkers embrace her intention to show us all what she's learned about helping and getting things done in a time when someone of her caliber is exactly what we need. Obama, Clinton, Biden all have moved into more key positions to do continued good works. Let's not cry about New York seeking to replace one of them with another person of substance.

another Sen Kennedy - eek
I think Caroline should get the open NY seat because she got unlucky and has the Irish (rolf)features (ok for a guy) instead of her beautiful mom's looks

Sorry John...
..BO doesn't get my respect (nor does MO,) though the office he'll hold does. He's been cultivated by the "Chicago Way" team because he speaks well, is a quick study, able to shift with the wind, and can talk on his cell phone while he bops down plane stairs with one limp wrist & chewing gum like a cow.

Perhaps after he's inaugurated I'll start emailing & talking trash about him as was done to GWB. It'll be an uphill fight, because the MSM gets weak in the knees just looking at him!

Coronations
Here in Chicago, certain people are demanding that whomever is appointed to fill the seat vacated by Obama be African-American. When John Stroger (head of the powerful Cook County Board) had a stroke, his family & handlers kept his condition shrouded in secrecy, until they were able to muscle his son into the position. America is not a monarchy! And as we witness the degeneration of results by our various elected bodies, we are seeing - to borrow a line from the Rev. Jeremiah Wright - our "chickens are coming home to roost". Appointing Caroline Kennedy to fill Hillary's seat is more of the same. She has a law degree (not a helpful thing - as the number of lawyers in Congress increases, the "tricksier" (Tolkein) the decisions coming from that body become)and it is highly doubtful that she has more than a basic understanding of economics. Perhaps the most disturbing trend I see is a resigned apathy on the part of average citizens who feel that they have no way to fight against the powerful ensconced pols.

Past Time
Can you imagine....much less condone, That The Sons of Liberty or the Minute Men would not have already dumped the Tea or even fired the Shot...America wastes the blood of patriots..stoops to chronic stupidty and stomps people to death for a flat screen TV..Obama ? McCain ?
What happened to Statesmen/women ship ? What happened to leadership?
What happened to personal responsibility?
What happened to Citizenship?

Did Liberalism promote Self-Godism and the Fruits of the Devil?

Two Words
TERM LIMITS!!!!!!
One term, thanks for your service, go home, no pension for life.
Change the Senate term to four years and the House term to four years and term limit all of them to one term.
Lifetime positions for these dirt bags is a problem for this country. We can't afford them. Now we're seeing these dirt bags lifetime employment turned into family dynasties. It's got to stop. Both parties do this and it's revolting.

Embarrassment
I can't see how Caroline could be any more of an embarrassment then Chuck You Schumer... Seems to fit New York style politics.

Princess Caroline
I love Charles Krauthammer's wit.

How must the NY organization Dems feel who worked their way up from precinct captain only to see first Queen Hillary and now Princess Caroline jet into a US Senate seat?

And has there been any outrage in Delaware that Joe Biden apparently owns his senate seat and therefore gets to dispose of it as he wishes since it is his and not the voters?

But my favorite is President elect Obama as the piano player in the brothel! Daley machine b'hoys come and go, Wright and Flager carry on, Ayres almost blows up the place, and the Gov tries to sell the establishment(which is on land owned by Resko), while Obama plays a jaunty tune apparently oblivious to everything else!

Merry Christmas!

Krystalbird
Respecting the office to me requires addressing the individual by name. You may not like the individual, or respect him or his talents. I wasn't the biggest fan of President Clinton, but I never called him "slick willie" or "willie drop trou" because he was the President of the United States (and because doing so reflected poorly on me, but that's another story). Respecting the office requires that you address its holder by his/her (real) name.

GaryB
Same goes as for Krystalbird. . .

Princess Caroline
She's only slightly less qualified than the man we just elected to lead our once great nation.

unqualified
I don't know what the conservatives are whining about...unless they actually learned something from supporting the most incompetent and corrupt administration (Bush/Cheney) in perhaps a century. A genuine apology would be accepted, but this hammering at one person who wants to continue her own family's great legacy is just pathetic. At least Kennedy is intelligent and has proven she intends to keep her country first. George W. has been the laughing stock of the world since he aspired to be governor of Texas, and the guffaws increased since Americans handed him the crown in '00 and '04...until his policies and sheer ignorance of all things sensible proved to be absolutely dangerous. Kennedy's participation in the Senate will provide a hope for balanced and bipartisan governing that we haven't had in at least 14 years.

Lighten up, John!
At least none of us have compared BO to Hitler! (After all, the repeated likening of GWB to Hitler of the past years has really damaged the Hitler brand!) I'll stick to my favorite nickname for him - Neo-Napoleon. (Insecure ... narcissist ... delusions of grandeur ... it fits and avoids using the "H-word.")

Virginia Lady - I believe YOUR argument is the best one on here!

I'm fairly certain the CKS appointment is a done deal. Who would have the cajones to refuse a Kennedy once she has spoken?

Meanwhile in MN
Dems steal yet another election. Recount until you get the result you want.

Shouldn't we just be honest and change the motto from "E Pluribus Unum" to "Let Them Eat Cake"? It's far more descriptive of our values these days.

good column
I seldom agree with Krauthammer, but I agree with most of what he says above. I do wonder whether nepotism is really on the rise. To know one would have to look at the level of nepotism at the time of the founding fathers and through the countries history. It is silly to make claims about things getting worse without actually checking whether they were better.

But this is largely irrelevant. The founding fathers had faults of their own, and there is no reason we should repeat them. And appointing another Kennedy because of her name would be a mistake.

There also should be a distinction made between those hereditary people who worked their way up, and those who, like Kennedy would be, are simply annointed.

Lisa Madigan is the attorney general of Illinois. Jesse Jackson Jr is a Congressman. And Beau Biden is the Delaware Attorney General who is currently serving in Iraq as a reservist. They are natural candidates for Senate even ignoring their name (although their names have helped get them where they are as W's did).

kennedy, yes!
Aside from the democrat's hypocrisy; (Palin), I don't have a problem with
her seeking, and getting the senate seat.

Most career politicians do absolutely nothing in the senate and the congress except vote in a partisan fashion, (or don't vote).

I'd rather have someone there who would certainly have a fresh approach, and more of a soberness about the task.

They, (the dems), really ought to remember their position on
experience the next time they trash Palin, (who had more executive experience than the other 3 candidates). (of course they won't).

And your point is.....
Krystalbird, you forgot to WAIT until AFTER he was inaugurated to "...start talking trash about him..." Well, let's hope that the Early Bird really DOES get the worms.

I can't wait
I simply can't wait for the end of the Kennedy dynasty. But...they're a prolific bunch and it's taking longer than I had anticipated.

And don't take this the wrong way, but God I'm glad John-John is gone from the scene. I have absolutely no doubt the man would have been annointed to some high office within the Dem Party...at least a senate seat...probably a run at the presidency too at some point. After all, the entire appeal of the Kennedys is celebrity, charisma, physical attractiveness, and a childish pining for the "good old days" of Camelot (you remember...the baby boom generation's first love). And John-John had these traits in spades.

This is why everyone is so mystified with how this election went. It's your misinformation and style that demonstrates electorate stupidity.

Barry O Resigned his Senate Seat (Remember Bloggo?) and there is no such office as "Office of President-Elect". So no, he's not a Senator, and no, he holds no office of respect.

Barry O gets respect when he EARNS it, not a second before. I promise to afford him the same amount of respect as Liberals have demonstrated for OUR CURRENT PRESIDENT! No more, no less...

Ultimately the Voters Decide
Why is no one asking the electorates in the various states why they continue to elect such people? Shouldn't candidates be challenging this trend during the election cycle? I would think any challenger to one of these seats has ready ammunition in merely mentioning how anti-democratic this is. I should hope voters would respond to this argument?

John displays the ignorance of liberals
"Just FYI, his name is President Elect Barack Obama, not BarryO. Show him the respect that he deserves as a current member of the United States Senate and the future President of the United States."

He resigned his Senate seat weeks ago, and isn't officially president-elect until proclaimed so by the Vice President in January when the Electoral College votes are counted.

When they teach civics and personal responsibility in school, the liberals (Democrats) will lose.

Travesty!
That is what Caroline Kennedy having a precious
seat in our Senate just given to her would be.

The same is true for Biden. This should be
illegal. It should have been made illegal at
the first example of it's happening.

Why would it be assumed the electorate of
Delaware would vote for this son? Why would
they? Are they morons? It needs to be made
illegal before it can come to pass!

[Time for an outcry of the citizenry at this
point.]

The fact that Caroline has expressed interest
at being appointed is complete proof that she
does indeed feel /entitled/ to it. Title being
the important part of that word.

Krauthammer at his best
Dr. Krauthammer at his wisest and best. If Americans want an American House of Lords, amend the Constitution. Do as the Brits have done and remove virtually all legislative authority. Just let them do what they do best: pontificate and bloviate.

Mojobebop NY 9:36am
You've just explained why NY deserves the representation it has. You write about a "fresh approach" and "soberness". Can I remind you that the Kennedy's have never been noted for "soberness" and the "fresh approach" of which you write is full-on Socialism? Of course her mandates for the rest of us won't touch her bank account but watch your prosperity and your property evaporate into thin air.

Once again, I vote to change our national motto from "E Pluribus Unum" to "Let Them Eat Cake"! Who is with me?

Krauthammer - Excellent
Sir you hit the nail on the head. Nothing more needs to be said

It's Only Right
One of Mother Nature's rules is that if the conditions for a certain type of life exist, that life form will exist.

America has been morphing into a Third World failed state for some time. Our empire has collapsed. We're seen now by the world as impotent, unable to pacify even rag tag criminal gangs in lawless deserts. With a superb military, but an inept moronic civilian leadership, we fear the sensibilities of our enemies who now throw shoes at our commander in chief.

Our economy is ruined. The treasury is being raided by our ruling elites who are sharing it with their political allies and fleeing the country before the raging mobs crash the gates.

It's only fitting that we have a government better suited for a banana boat republic: dynastic aristocracies or rich families who own the country.

Now the U.N and China can give us foreign aid that will go directly to the Kennedys, Clintons, Bushes, and whatever new clans emerge from the Obama regieme.

Our citizens are now officially serfs. They kneel by the millions in municipal parks, arms outstetched, pleading for surplus government food, low interest rates, and milk for their starving illiterate and illegitimate kids.

Caroline should rightly be knighted as Vassal of New York. It makes sense.

It's the same folks
who told us that Sarah Palin was not qualified, who are now telling us that Caroline Kennedy IS qualified "because she's a woman and a mother." There are different rules for liberal Democrats.

Rich D.
That's fine (although more de jure true than de facto), but that means you never supported anyone calling Barack Obama anything other than Senator Obama when he was in the Senate, and will never support anyone calling anything but him President Obama after the inauguration?

Caroline Who?
that's it! I am quitting politics, at least until 2012.
We need another President we need another first lady we need people who are, and have always been "Proud of America!"
Since I'm going on vacations I wish all of you the very Merriest of Xmas and the best for the year to come. Christians rejoice the real Messiah will soon be born. Hopefully he will cast a kind eye on those of faith and give us his blessing for the New Year! Be good, Be well, be safe!

Classic Krauthammer
"They chatter away in supreme irrelevance deep into their dotage."

Doesn't get any better than Krauthammer on a roll.

JOHN NY

.....Hey John boy ...how's the tax situation in the Empire State? ...Maybe Caroline can give the GUV some new ideas on what to tax next .....COLOSSUS

Don't hold back, JohnR22
Tell us what you REALLY think about dead people. So, in answer to a solicitation of your thoughts on Caroline Kennedy's aspirations to the New York Senate, you wish to tell us how you always hated her family and can't wait for them to become extinct? In particular, apparently, her brother John Kennedy who died in a plane crash at a young age several years ago, thereby, not really of any relevance to this forum?

Wow. You sound like a real prize, JohnR22. So representative of concerned citizens everywhere who wish to join "town hall" discussion and offer ideas of consequence and merit.

I don't think anyone will "take this the wrong way."

What a lovely man. MI must be so proud.

Hey UpState New Yorkers!
Don't you EVER get tired of these limousine Liberals flying in to tell you they will "Work to get Federal Money and Programs to help your Economy"? I swear I've been hearing this for most of my adult life.

And where's Mr. Caroline Kennedy? It's so tacky that she now resorts to her maiden name to CASH IN on the notoriety (most negative).

I see Cuomo's ex-wife is out stumping for her cousin WITHOUT revealing her prior marital situation. Was that a divorce or one of those famous Kennedy Annulments?

"I am the State."

Hyannis port, ‘noblesse oblige’ rears its head. Ms. Kennedy's long commitment to public service is easily demonstrated beyond Ipse Dixit. It’s not in her writing of texts or touting the individual’s participation in society writ large. A life long commitment to the public good is etched in acts.

The death of John Kennedy Jr. has left Ms. Kennedy-Schlossberg as the ensign of Kennedy hope and future glory.

It appears that the Clintons, like James Earl Carter before are mere bumpkin pretenders in the eyes of the collective Kennedy Trust. Sen. Rodham-Clinton is inconvenient surplusage to be brushed aside in the newest rush to recreate a Kennedy in the White House.

If Ms. Kennedy-Schlossberg can become a Senator and then retain the seat, she is a decade younger than Sen. Clinton and will in the course of events gravitate to the role of leading Democrat female to be President of the U.S.A.
Sen. Clinton be damned, forgotten and spoken of no more thank you.

It is so pretentious, so crafted and so fantastic that it is just, so obvious.

I encourage all journalists to grill Ms. Kennedy-Schlossberg on issues of Constitutional Jurisprudence as a way of setting out for all to see her claim that she is what she purports to be. After that, she can run for office and start creating a record of public service.

JOHN IN NY:
Oh, I'm sorry, I meant to say Comrade Hussein Usbamma.

I have no respect for the man who will spend our nation into deep recession in an attempt to redistribute eveyone's wealth and socialize our once free market economy.

I have no respect for a man who will lift all limits on abortions.

I have no respect for a man whose church of 20 years is a haven for anti-semite Louie Farrakhan and anti-American, anti-white, anti-Christian Reverend Wright.

Barry....Barack.....Hussein....Soetoro.....Obama...whatever has to earn my respect.
I don't see it happening.

What is Her Real Name.
I didn't realize she had divorced and taken her maiden name! Yea, right. Get use to it, it is a done deal.

Is anyone else
just sick to death of how our government works?

We now have a body of Congress that only the rich or famous can aspire too. We recently had a presidential election where our choices were a 72 year old Senator most famous for working against his own party who thought it was owed to him ran against a junior Senator with no actual experience but the arrogance to write or have ghost-written two biographies.

It is pitiful at the state and loca levels we have numerous politicians who clearly think that your money and property belongs to them. When they aren't busy stealing more money from people who work for a living they are busy trying to control their constituents behavior through nanny laws and taxes such as taxing fast-food and soda and banning tobacco and transfats not to mention bottled water and shopping bags.

I can honestly say that I despise my government at all levels and I fear them. Bureacrats and pols at all levels have complete control of our lives and soon they will fully take over our health decisions - may God protect us.

Wha-a-a?
Here's the perfect evidence that conservative ideas are in such a void, their lives so meaningless nd empty, their ideas so retrograde, that they are up in arms about who a totally different state, often thousands of miles away, is choosing for a senator.

It's Christmas, guys, is this the best thing you have to do, or worry about? Who cares what any state decides to do about filing a senatorial seat except the one you live in?

Get a real life!

John in NY

John, his name will be Ovomit until he earns my respect. Just because you were stupid enough to vote for him doen't make him my President. Until he shows that he earned respect he will recieve that which he and his party have heaped on our current President. By the way, I agree that Paris Hilton would be a good choice for Senator, at least when she gave a press confrence it would be worth watching.

Charles Krauthammer
writes, "Problem is that the U.S. Senate retains House of Commons powers even as it develops a House of Lords membership."

That is what bothers me. The anointed should be summarily disqualified by virtue of the pedigree. Nepotism can destroy the country as easily as it destroys good companies. The son or daughter by virtue of their upbringing are automatically much less qualified then the guy that built it or earned it. House of Lords, indeed.

The next thing on TH will be
a "heart-warming", misty-eyed semi-fictional tale about Ronald Reagan, who was president in the last century.

As Voltaire wrote, "Tend your own garden."

Mifielder
We need to send Obama a special delivery letter right away and tell him that you are personally withholding respect for him until he meets your approval and requirements.

That should keep him awake at night.

One final thought on this issue
It speaks volumes about people that vote them in or vote to retain them following the appointment. Of course, that assumes honest elections. Perhaps that is the problem on the coasts and Chicago rather than the type of people?

Great Column Dr Krauthammer!
Keep getting the message out...

VOTING RECORD
Well the news today reports that Ms. Kennedy has a rather spotty voting records. Apparently she wants to BE the Senator but didn't really feel it was important to VOTE over the past 10 years FOR a Senator~

The Empress has not clothes.

susan and Rona
what would Britney do?

John NY
His name is Barack Hussein Zerobama. As you have already been told by several other posters here, he resigned from the Senate and so is no longer Senator Zerobama. He will be President-Elect Zerobama AFTER Vice-President Dick Cheney says he is when the votes of the Electoral College are counted and certified in the U.S. Senate.

Zerobama will and should be afforded the same degree of respect that the Democrats/Liberal/Progressives have afforded President George W. Bush. That would certainly be fair, don't you think?

Rum Dog 10:06am
I think we all know what time of year it is, it's your ilk trying to erase the reason for the season. But, thanks for sharing!

As for your comment that we should not concern ourselves with other state's federal officeholders, I disagree. We should all be concerned when Democrats successfully undermine previously adopted election procedures that place ill-qualified, corrupt and fraudulently elected candidates in a national office. Further, those officeholders will be passing legislation that affects all of the country. If we do nothing else this season, we should pay attention to states like MN, IL and NY choices for the U.S. Senate.

We The People
Government of the people, by the people and for the people has indeed perished. We the people have no more say in our country's political fiasco than we did in allowing McCain to carry the GOP banner into the dust and the government to give GM and Chrysler billions. BHO is president. Caroline will surely be NY's next senator and we the people will do the only things we can do with certainty, pay taxes and die.

YO DUMB DOG:
"Who cares what any state decides to do about filing a senatorial seat except the one you live in?"

I can't believe the stupidity of that comment.

Ever hear about Rod Blagojevich?

Senators make federal laws, laws that affect all of our lives, not just the lives of the citizens of the states they represent.

Senators can vote to raise your taxes, go to war, bailout billionaires, take away your freedoms, they can vote to legalize bizzare ways to kill babies. Senators are powerful people Dumb Dog.

I feel like I'm explaining this to an elementary school child.

It's you government Dumb Dog, you should care.

Governor Paterson
You served in NY government for many years before campaigning for and being elected Lieutenant Governor in November 2006 and subsequently assuming the Governorship in March of 2008 when Elliott Spitzer resigned. The fact that you are a legally blind African American has not stopped you from finding the courage and determination to be successful. Now you must step up to the plate and make a decision that will further show your true character. It seems to me you have 2 good choices:

1.Appoint a highly qualified and experienced individual to fill the Senate vacancy that will be left by Hillary Clinton for 2 years before the 2012 election and ignore those whose primary qualification for the job is being a relative of successful politician.

2.Appoint an experienced elder statesman who agrees to serve only for the remaining 2 years of Hillary Clinton’s term and who will not seek election in 2012. If Caroline Kennedy or anyone else really wants to be a NY Senator let them run for election at that time and let the people of NY decide.

Yes, she does have that bored débutante demeanor.
Everyone should ask why Father Micheal Pfleger not yelling about her sense of entitlement as he did with Hillary. Is it because she is a Kennedy Catholic?

Skylark, 7:20am: almost, not quite
"What about the Clinton woman who swooped into New York from Washington D.C???? She never lived in New York, she never held a public position and she was trading on the Clinton name."

True, but you guys did that to yourselves. Mrs. Clinton wasn't appointed to the seat: she ran for it, apparently fair and square. She even had an opponent in the primary, as I recall, who, whatever her shortcomings, gave Lady Macbeth a run for her money.

Now, if you want to compare their achievements, Clinton and Schlossberg, then have at it. But Clinton's method of achieving office, at least from this distance, had the appearance of legitimacy.

(Having thus defended Mrs. Clinton, I now feel soiled and will probably be quoting Lady Macbeth about Lady Macbeth: "out, out damned spot!" Must... get... clean!)

Then you'll be a shoe in!

Merry Christmas!

Another Kennedy?
How many Kennedy's does it take to screw up Washington? They drive drunkenly off bridges, they drive drunkenly into road blocks, they fly into the ocean, and now they just say, "I want to be Senator." And we all bow down to the new aristocracy, Camelot my aspirin. Excuse me, I'm flipping my hair to one side so I can be cute for the cameras. That's all the qualification you need to be a Senator now, you know.

Pick a Doctor or an Engineer
If they want to experiment, why not pick someone like a medical director at a hospital? Why not try someone of high intelligence who is already in a position of great responsibility? Or should we keeping picking lawyers and their nieces.

Give her the seat
We are about to inaugurate our First Affirmative Action President, so why not another twit in the Senate?

Correction
For Dave who wrote, "hen you'll be a shoe in!" The term you want is "shoo in."

Three so far today
I have read three articles this morning, one by Rich Lowry, one by Charles Krauthammer and now this one by Jonah Goldberg. All make a serious case as to why Caroline Kennedy does not have the kind of experience that would immediately qualify her to be a State Senator.

They write in the wind however, the Dems do not appoint the qualified or dedicated, they appoint those who can be counted on to toe the liberal line.

As for those who will once again drag Sarah Palin into this argument, get a life. Gov. Palin is not relevant to this issue. That issue would be the absolute hypocrisy of liberals and Democrats.

Is it any coincidence that one rarely
heard John John or princess Caroline speak in public. They are mental midgets, exactly what NY has come to expect from its representatives.

A Better idea is........
we should raise Princess Diana from the dead, she has as much cred as Caroline ....and a bigger fan club!!

Charles Krauthammer is totally right
Charles, as a liberal democrat, I could not agree more with what you wrote. You are 100 % correct. if she wants the seat, she needs to come through election and I will support her with money. But not through back door. This is a disgrace. I also am very dissapointed with VP Binden for keeping his seat for his son. what are we now? Iraqis under Saddam??? shame on Biden for this nonsense.

Phooey
Is this what it has come to on the left? Anointment rather than election? Caroline Kennedy needs to go back to her shopping and fund raising "galas".
Will we NEVER be free of this despicable and criminal family?

It's will happen regardless
Do you think the Ascendant Democrats care what any of us citizens think? They'll do as they damned well please, as tyrannies always do. Just wait for the next act! We're about as screwed as we can possibly be. I don't even know if another Reagan could help us now.

A Nation of Lawyers........
Not only do we have rule by the aristocracy - whether the NYC, Hollyweird or DC-Beltway elites, a highly biased, partisan media/journalist class, we also have become a nation of lawyers to put it simply.

We no longer have men of substance; we no longer have engineers, mechanics and skilled tradesmen like we used to have and that's one of the reasons why we don't build and create great things anymore. We don't engineer and manufacture much anymore, instead we have become a nation of media pundits and party spokes-holes who fill the television with ther propaganda.

We are nearly finished as an independent, sovereign country. Next stop, world government with a diminished USA. The dream of far-left liberals will have come true. A weakened, humbled USA beholden to the world elite.

Princess Caroline
Why not? If she messes up, vote her out in 2010.

caroline ????? bad choice!
more demo-rats,infest the city!

Sarcasm and doom abounds
We never know what others are thinking and I doubt very much that Caroline Kennedy believes she is entitled. The hate spewed on these pages is pathetic. It would be a viable appointment and she would have two years to prove herself to the people of New York. She can then run for election in 2010 on her proven merits.

We could do much worse than a brilliant woman with a law degree from a gifted political family. She is known to work hard. Just as the clamoring here says her name should not assure her of appointment - neither should it prevent it.

No, I am not a liberal Democrat. I am a registered Republican.

Caroline's face
Poor Caroline. To have her poor wrinkled 50 year old Kennedy face scrutinized in the national press as if she were a celebrity like that paragon of 50 year old naturalness Madonna (Gag, choke!)

Forget her looks- only sad for her she looks more like her Irish lineage and less like her gorgeous (and intelligent) mum. Focus on the issue at hand... the apparent creeping aristocracy happening HERE in OUR United States! What's happening to US? As that famous lefty Woody Guthrie once said, "This land is MY land (and YOUR land)" and I'm getting tired of this horrible drift!

Take a Liberal to Work Week
I think the Caroline Kennedys of this country should have to accompany the various "rich and privileged" to their jobs each day for a week before they are allowed anywhere near public office. Tradesmen in NJ are taxed in excess of 50%, but somehow are seen as "privileged" and "lucky".

The HVAC guys going into disgusting craw spaces, attics that are 130 degrees in the summer, dragging 300lb boilers around, etc... The plumbers who literally deal with excrement, electricians, framers, roofers, landscapers, etc... All these people are being pillaged and rendered unable to grow due to confiscatory taxes and regulations. It will not be long before their backs are broken- some already are.

School personnel need to have a week of doing things the private sector way: buy your own insurances, continuing ed classes, rental office space, supplies, retirement, advertise for clients; deal with the threat of frivolous lawsuits, compete based upon merit. No paid vacations or sick time.

It would be far more difficult to embrace liberal ideology if the ramifications of it are personally experienced. The liberal minded to my acquaintance never have to absorb the consequences of their ideology.

Rum Dog - MN, reply #82
Yet another example of ignorance. While you may be correct about people being up in arms about a senator "Not from their state" I guess you fail to realize that this is yet another of the 100 people that are responsible for passing laws and budgets that effect ALL OF US!!
You can chose to ignore and feel complacent about the country you live in. I, however feel compelled to stay informed and active in what happens in the Congress that is slowly becoming a ruling force over my liberties.

I'll believe Republicans when...
I'll believe Republicans are upset about the alleged 'dangers' of aristocracy in our government when people like Krauthammer object to Republican dynasties. Yes, he mentions the Bushes, but is there a criticism of them? Nah. He can't resist the urge to go off on a Kennedy. As I'm sure lots of TH readers know, there are Republican strategists out there who would like to see Jeb Bush get to the Senate and then eventually become President. So, dynastic aspirations aren't wrong--it just depends on which party the aspirants belong to.

Dave's not here...
Dave...don't say "shoe."

Dave's not here...
Dave, don't say "shoo" either...they don't spell when they tthrow 'em.

double standard?
Anyone else note the double standard by the media here?

Ms. Kennedy has never been in an election, held public office of any kind and is seeming to get a pass from the democrats and the media "because she cares about people".

In contrast the duly elected Govenor of Alaska was summarily dismissed as "unqualified" for high office by the same people.

Hummm.....

More hand-wringing from the right
Cynthia, the reason you know about what tyrannies always do is because you just lived under one for 8 years, sweetie. As far as more Republican digging like emotional mole rats back to the past AGAIN, go FIND another Reagan and let HIM trickle down on you, too. Yeah, remember how well that worked out?

Now you're going to talk about who's good-looking enough to run for office? What a woman! Tell me, could YOU run for anything with your own criteria? Waaaaah, waaaaah, waaaaah. I'm tired of this drift, too. You guys are whining when you're IN office and whining when you're OUT. Please stop.

Re; Caroline Kennedy deserves what??
Hello,
Once in a little while we see things that are written in articles, and they just make you go right!!!! I see this article that Charles wrote about Caroline Kennedy, and I say that makes perfect sense. I smell something funny up in New York. It seems that although even when we see people named Kennedy making the news it is in the way of saying how much they have fallen GOO-GAA for the man that will become "OUR" next President, and how funny it is that they decided to hook there horse to the one least qualified candidates that was in the race this yr., and now they have another unqualified person that is trying real hard to fill a seat that she does not even deserve to be talking to anyone about. What is it about the Kennedy's, and people like them that they think are so "WORTHY" and are suppose to be given anything they want to them on a silver platter.

There is, in fact, no proof that Marie Antoinette ever said, "Let them eat cake." The remark was heard in France many years before the French Revolution. When Marie Antoinette, 11, was playing in her mother's place in Austria, an anonymous princess advised the populace to eat brioche in "Confessions" by Jaques Rousseau written in 1740 and published in 1766. Once again, outdated and questionable information to further the cause.

Just a bit more enlightenment from another "drug-addled, leftover hippie." At least I check my facts.

Elections no longer matter........
- Chicago's chronically corrupt Democratic machine wants to sell Barry Soetoro's Senate seat.

- Jokester Al Franken is likely to steal Norm Coleman's Minnesota Senate seat.

- Now Princess Caroline wants to be appointed to the Senate seat of New York.

Think I'm just partisan?

- I think Arnold in California was unqualified to become Governor of that state.

- I think the Moonbat Messiah Barry was unqualified to run for President but today, celebrity is all that matters. Barry-boy had Oprah and Soros financing His Racial Righteousness's career and it paid off.

Still think elections matter?

Caroline Kennedy seeking the U.S. Senate
To Charles Krauthammer and all of these birds who seemingly don't know the qualifications to become a U.S. Senator, or won't to change the Constitution, let me just say this: I believe the ONLY requirements to be able to serve in the senate is that one is 30 years of age, been a U.S. citizen for at least nine years, and are a resident of the state that one is seeking to become a senator. And I think Caroline Kennedy meets these qualifications. Case closed. ---Rev. George Brooks of Murfreesboro, TN.

Caroline Kennedy
How amusing to listen and watch the democratics foaming at the mouth about Caroline. They make her more qualified than Hillary. But go back a few weeks and consider their efforts to destoy Sarah Palin because she was not qualified. Now that the shoe is on the other foot, I can enjoy the Holiday Season while watching the Liberals make fools out of themselves. You go girl!

John
"That's fine (although more de jure true than de facto), but that means you never supported anyone calling Barack Obama anything other than Senator Obama when he was in the Senate, and will never support anyone calling anything but him President Obama after the inauguration?"

Correct, if refering to his office or title. One would have hoped for the same when he refered in public to Senator McCain as "John".

Qualified
Don't people get it--no one has to be qualified anymore for any of these positions.

Don't get me wrong, but why in the world would Caroline Kennedy want this position anyway? My suspecion is that this will keep a Kennedy in the Senate once her uncle, Teddy, resigns for "health reasons."

One of my claims to fame is that I once dated and kissed a high school girl-friend who was actually wearing Caroline Kennedy's sneakers.

As a conservative republican, I don't care who they put in there in Hill's old seat...I just want someone who can win as a republican in 2010. The weaker the better I say and if CK wants it and gets it, she then will have to earn it the old fashion way. Upstate already doesn't like her. Eating at Sylvias (which I have done as well) doesn't make one ready for a Senate seat...and CK stay away from the likes of Sharpton...he is NO FRIEND--ever.

Down with aristocracy! At first I didn't really care whether or not she got the seat only gleeful it would antagonize the Clintons. But after reading this piece, once again, my mind has been miraculously changed forever. My hope is that there will be a tremendous uproar from the media, bloggers included, and the masses with a touch of Machiavellianism perhaps from the Clintons to dissuade "Princess Caroline's" appointment.

You blather on about the Bushes family “entitlement” but left out a very crucial component in your argument. Like George Sr, George Jr. and Jeb they were elected by the people of their states and nation. I’m sure Jeb Bush will run for the open Senate seat by running an election campaign instead of being anointed by Charlie Crist. That’s the problems with most liberal’s arguments, you cannot see past the blinders you wear. You have a knee jerk action to almost any comment a conservative or moderate might say, without really thinking everything through. The Bush Family Dynasty has all been elected, whereas Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg will be most likely anointed to the vacate Senate seat based on her families last name.

If she ran as Caroline Schlossberg most of the residence outside NYC, would not know who she was nor wouldn’t care to find out. I’d have more respect for her had she started in local government or worked her way up the political ladder the same way her father did, but to grab the Senate seat with little to no political experience, except for a short stint working for “Uncle Teddy” her request for consideration is based solely on her family legacy. She’s drop the pretense and is now known as just Caroline Kennedy. I guess it’s the same hypocrisy started by her processor, Hillary Rodham Clinton, so I guess it’s only fitting in with the democrat ideology.

Princess Caroline of Camelot
I guess we are supposed to feel sorry for her because she is the only living member of the royal family. Of course that qualifies her for the office of U.S. Senator. How silly of us!

Princess Caroline
Caroline is being lined up to insure a Kennedy retains their fingers in the pie. After all, Uncle Teddy and his son, her cousin, are the only ones in Congress. Teddy probably won't run again so a Kennedy needs to step in. Caroline has raised her children, probably doesn't have to clean her own mansion, so she needs something to do. Plain and simple.

Our Latest Kennedy
She will get the Senate seat and the moronic voters in this state will be jumping for joy, the same way they were when Queen Hillary decided she wanted to be our Senator.
New Yorkers had contempt for Sarah Palin: she was unqualified. They loathe Bush. Take an unpopularity poll in Manhattan between Bush and Bin Laden and Bush would be surely deemed the most hated.
I've lived here my entire life and have always felt New York has the dumbest voters in the country. I admit it is a close contest with New Jersey, Illinois and California, but with 2 Senators the likes of Chuck Schumer and the totally unqualifed Caroline Kennedy, I still think we win the most arrogant and stupidest voters award.

GPC007...
I don't want to make you feel bad, but you're probably right in your analysis.

California definitely is close to the top of the list though, I know, I live there.

To Those of You Who "Demand" Respect For
BHO, get over yourselves! With all the ugly names President Bush has been called over the years, I find your comments extremely funny! I have no respect for the person the UNINFORMED among us elected, and I will refer to him as the president only when he has been sworn in.
As for Caroline Kennedy - what's so special? Sarah Palin has more qualifications than this woman! Oh, I forgot - she's a democrat and that makes it all swell!

John
unlike the military where the RANK must be respected, the man must EARN my respect. He hasn't done anything to earn it...yet

Jude
The greatest crisis facing New Jersey and this country is the exodus of jobs due to confiscatory taxation and crippling regulations. I have been working with at-risk teens for 25 years, and there are very few job opportunities for them now, while 25 years ago there were tradesmen and businesses that would train and hire. Gang activity and crime has overrun many neighborhoods, including the area where I work. Things are markedly worse today than 25 years ago because of taxation and government largess and the shrinking private sector. There is every reason to cry, because the private sector generates ALL revenue, and it is being extinguished thanks to the willful stupidity of those who have no clue where government money comes from.

What "trickles down", are jobs and revenue with supply-side economics. How this is lost on you or anyone else is incomprehensible. Many of my colleagues are now hysterical that corporations are leaving this state and donations are way down. We social workers depend upon them and know bureaucracy to be the hinderance it always is. When the pain of it affects you, and it will, you'll cry too if you are smart enough. Pehaps you will just bleat for a bigger global bureaucracy. Dumb goat.

Mensa or moronic will make no difference

I think most of you people have it wrong.

Have you ever met a real New Jerk citizen? I sure don't want any more of them in the Senate, we have the Jerkky Slimer there now as Sr. Senator.

I would rather have the lady who will vote as her slimy cousins and uncle tells her to vote, than someone with actual knowledge or ability.

----------
The right to structure and control the Senate, the House and the Assembly, has nothing to do with the competence of individuals who have been elected; brains do not count; ability doesn’t matter; character is immaterial; membership in the KKK does not matter; association with an American Terrorists does not matter; only the count of party membership decides who gets to make the laws under which we will live.

Assume you have elected the greatest legislator you can imagine. If that person is not in the Majority party, he/she will be permitted to accomplish almost nothing.

If you are happy with the way Democrats run the Legislature when they are the Majority, vote for their candidate. If not, vote for the Republican. If the candidate you elect is exceptional, consider it a bonus, but if you watch CSPAN, or remember your High School Government Class, you will vote for the candidate of the party you think can best determine the future of your state, and the USA.

One or two members, whether Mensa or moronic, will make little difference. (Where did that “one or two” come from?)

Good article Charles!
To those who are offended by the lack of respect for the "Obammer", I say suck it up and get over it. I amongst many others for one have absolutely no respect for Obama, and regardless of who voted for him, he is not my President. You with me so far? I am free to call him any name I choose, including "Jug Ears". I have not seen where it is written in the Constitution, laws and other wise that any President will be addressed as "Mr President",and if he were to walk into my house right now, I would not stand up for him, nor would I address him by any name other than Mr Obama.

Respect must be earned, and cannot be legislated in spite of what some may think, and Obama deserves no more respect than what was afforded both George Bush and Ronald Reagan when they took office. What goes around comes around

I am constantly amazed at the hypocrisy and fawning of the Liberals and left wing media over the likes of Caroline Schlossberg in her self absorbed, fevered entitlement mind, quest to be a US Senator from New York, contrasted with that of Sarah Palin,Governor of Alaska. Most appalling is the lack of shame.

Oh, by the way, Caroline, no matter who she is, is hardly a ravishing beauty, and as far as her Mother is concerned, I have seen better looking legs on tables.

Always About Palin!
When Oh when will we have a Women in an elected leadership position not riding the coattails of a successful man. Who will be the examples for my daughters. Caroline and Hillary get out of the way and make room for Condi and Sarah. Our country will benifit from non-lawyer feminine input.

Pedigree
I would rather have an elegant lady with pedigree than, say, that Blogdovich fellow.
There is no problem, in my view, from folks who want the job to serve the country rather than many folks who use the position to build power and a sense of worth and sometimes actual pecuniary worth.

Jude the Jerk
Where did I mention anything The Frog Queen said? HOW did she end? THAT is what I was referring to. Relight your bong and return to your Perpetual State of Doper Dementia!

Re: Boy what gall!!!
This women thinks that she should be given the senate set because she is a Kennedy, well you know something, given the current political climate I would not be surprised that it is given to the stuffed shirt of person and we all don't deserve any Democarcy either!!! Hey, here is an idea lets just do away with the constitution and become a socialistic state and the cronism can just run rampant!! I would go across the street to watch this person get mugged!!!

Well said, Charles
That is exactly my sentiments and objection to her appointment.

I certainly don't believe there would be any objection to Caroline Kennedy being named Director of the Peace Corps which was suggested in the last couple of months. However, it speaks volumes about our political system when a Senate appointment is made based on to whom you are related.

oldsocialworker
New Jersey is not alone in losing jobs and businesses to taxation and regulations. Add a huge influx of new residents from a neighboring country and drought to that and you have California. I don't believe I will take seriously any insulting commments or condemnations from a person who is looking for donations and who's colleagues are hysterical without them. I'll just BET you know where government money comes from. CAME from. I'd be hysterical, too, if I had no other plan. Maybe if social work offered more effectiveness after 25 years, there would be less gang activity and crime, too. Presumptuous name-calling dork.

Camelot
The name sounds like a lot of things: there's a nursing home by that name (or was); I'm sure there's a trailer park named Camelot, too. (Perhaps Abu bin Hussein runs a used Camel Lot?) Something could be said - using the name as a verb - about the Kennedy propensity for...procreation...as well. Vulgar. But then, so is the notion that there should be an American Aristocracy. People like George Will and Kathleen Parker have joined the ranks of those who prefer the company of kings to the rest of us - whom they consider unwashed and unspeakable. And when people like KP and GW dump all over Palin on the basis of one interview - (a hatchet job at that) - it's small wonder that the "little people" (and I include myself in that category) decide they'd rather see someone like Joe the Plumber in office than Joe "the Swordless" Biden.

Perhaps one of Dubya's greatest gifts is looking and acting like one of us, not like the son of a father who acts like an aristocrat. Odd how the left prefers the appearance of royalty over substance.

All I can say is: Kennedy go home. Go have tea with Kathleen and George.

FAMILY
Many normal, everyday hard-working Americans research the genealogy of their families to 'map' out their 'past' on 'family trees'. It seems, however, the royalty and the dynasties of our Country plot their ascension to 'map' out their 'future' and that of their children on the 'branches' of our government.

Typical Liberal Political Move…
Liberals don't know how to run for political office, nor are they capable of running a legitimate campaign. Honesty must be avoided, and truth must be sidestepped for them to make gains.

Liberals are liars and cheats, and they look out for their own no matter what. Earned, or absconded… they want the power to control others. Brainless Caroline will be crowned by the libs. (And, you wait and see how Blagojevich weasels out of his criminal situation). They look out for their own…no matter what!

John F. Kennedy served 2-1/2 vacuous years as president… accomplishing nothing, really, then set the stage for a dynasty of spoiled brats telling us how to live our lives. The Kennedy patriarch (Joe) was a gangster/political hack who controlled Boston and Massachusetts politics… a cheap thug, and a strong-arm robber baron who stole his way to wealth and power. Now we must deal with his off-spring, and their off-spring. When will the bullschit end?

300,000,000 Americans… and THIS is the best we can do for leaders? Give me a break! Term limits is absolutely imperative for us to survive.

I like this Kennedy

Oh my, I didn't mean it that way. I like this Kennedy, and I hope she gets the job.

I am sick and tired of the ones in the Senate who are know-it-alls.

Why have elections
If we're going to go down the family tree and pick the next member off the tree, heck throw the will of the people out the window along with having election. Forget the political experience, the name is all they need. I thought the seat belonged to the people. I want it therefore it's mine. Is that how it goes now. I don't want to hear about our kids coming out of school not knowing anything. We now have the privileged going into government not knowing anything.

I'm with the conservatives on this one
Caroline Kennedy is being forwarded as the next Senator from New York based entirely on her name and family petigree.

Can any of her defenders point to achievements which make her more qualified than any number of Democrats in the New York pool.

Is Pelosi a Princess with a Jet?
Write to Rep. Pelosi and voice your opposition to her spending $480,000 month to jet back and forth to Washington at taxpayers expense while Americans shop at the 99 cent stores or go hungry after the U.S. Congress ripped us off for all of our tax dollars and now are spreading the wealth from more of our taxdollars to whoever they choose.

Stand up for your country and for the American people and stop the waste of our tax dollars by those who appear out of touch with the rest of America's patriotic citizens.

the liberal whine
I want my pony so give it to me.

Liberals always claim to have concern and compassion for the great unwashed but once they see something they want they expect it to be given them.

I guess the old fashioned notion of earning what you get isn't generally taught to the wealthy. Perhaps if she had at least once her name for possible election it would be a different matter.

But raising 3 kids isn't part of the job description nor is writing books. Public service should show show demonstratable skills as well as an idea of what her values and ideas are.

But as the dims are pointing out. She is a supporter of the messiah and supports his philosophy. That too is not part of the job description nor is the fact her uncle and cousin are already in congress ort daddy and another uncle were assasinated

Jude
Social work is largely liberalism out the abstract and into application. Your post makes no sense- of course social programs depend upon donations- it always has. Whether through taxes or funds volutarily offered, all public sector efforts depend upon private dollars. Now that government is big business rather than by the people and for the people, thanks to years of liberal democrat policies and practices, the takers now outnumber the producers. Furthermore, the producers are being blamed for having the nerve to have prospered, and the seriously misguided are attacking our golden goose to the ruin of all. We are in serious trouble, Jude, and its not because government isn't big enough.

About the dumb goat thing- its not a "name", its a description of behavior. Its true, I am a dork, always have been and will continue in that proud tradition.

Oh done Juanita: A nothing comment

typical of a liberal...

Caroline Schlossberg is no more qualified to take Hillary's seat than my horse!

But, ya gotta admit, she would fit in quite well on that side of the aisle.

Another worthless Kennedy
Idiots lap dogs deserve who they get. A fitting end to the most disastrous election in US history. Hey, every great society seems to have to have their downfall. We are no different. I'll take J Lo

JOHN
Since name recognition is soooo very inportant to you, did you know your name is just another name for the crapper??
BarryO seems so much more polite than the names that I would call him, face the facts,no one here heeds your worthless comments. Try the huffington blog they will appreciate your stupidity. LOL

About social work, Jude
Social work and social workers are only as "effective" as the CHOICES clients make. It is illegal to make what can be construed as a "value judgement"- we can be sued and lose our licenses. Thanks to years of liberal ideology eroding the efficacy of the legal system, crime and crappy behavior now pay. Many social workers leave the field because of this.

You are right- social work is not making much of a difference. It can't. It always comes down to individual values and choices, which we are not allowed-by law- to address. So why keep voting liberal democrat and funding that which makes matters worse? I love the kids I work with and do my best to help them avoid systems (being diagnosed bipolar, usually)- but there are many things I can do for a living.

Kennedy,Bush,Clinton
It is time to end the dynasties. This is not a Monarch. Just because one in a family made a name for himself does not mean each member should follow suit.

We have had decades of these three families. Enough is enough. They, along with do-nothing congresses have brought this country to the brink of disaster. Let's put them out to pasture.

I wonder
while it is hardly relevant to the discussion of this article: What kind of person would take a job in our government if EVERY SINGLE MOMENT OF THEIR LIVES 24 HOURS A DAY WERE SUBJECT TO PUBLIC SCRUTINY? No time off, no private moments at all.none(insert scatological visual here). I wonder if nepotism would even be possible. Or for that matter liberal thinking. What liberal can anyone name would not be completely put off by a "truman show" life? Hmmm. This might be an idea.Pillory by election.

Why should the Kennedy family...
...have 2 of only 100 U.S. Senate seats?

Even if Ted Kennedy steps down due to health reasons, the concept is still utterly ridiculous.

Are there no other candidates just as qualified in the New York area????

Should the US Senate pay minimum wage?
After all it seems to have become an entry level position. Just like "Honorabe Senator from New York", this has become a joke. Actually, Thoroughly Rotten Cli..., I mean Hillary Rotten Clinton proved not only don't you need any more experience than that provided by osmosis, you really don't have to do much once you get hired.
In that aspect, Caroline KINeddy who has missed several votes as a citizen has a fabulous role model in Ms. Clinton's record of missing votes over the last few years is met only by the next president.

From another former Social Worker
After years of study and testing I became an employee of the Nassau County (N.Y.) Dept. of Social Services. I had placed ninth in a group of 3,000 test takers and was in the original group of 12 hires from that test. I lasted just about eight months. When I left, they were hiring people in the 175th ranking. The turnover of talented and educatated people in that agency was astonishing. It didn't take long for disillusionment to set in. Much of the time and energy I had dreamed of devoting to helping people was actually spent filling out forms, going to meetings where we would watch the system sag deeper and deeper under the weight of unfounded mandates from the state and federal government.
I do remember our orientation lecture where we were told of the long and noble history of social services in this country founded on the ideal of serving the deserving needy. Over the years that definition was stretched to include mytiad sub classes to include nearly every group of people who for one reason or another wouldn't work for a living as oppossed to those who couldn't.
There is a finite amount of funding that people can part with before their own needs can not be met. This is not a small amount, but because of the many demands made upon it, the individual recipient gets very little.
If the original concept of the desreving poor was more strictly defined and subsequentally enforced, people who really need and depend on these benefits could be supported in a comfortable and dignified lifestyle. Instead we have a large segment of the population who take the small stipends and adapt their own way of life to misery. The clueless social theorists who have added the burden to this sytem have nothing but good ideas and intentions to guide them. The sad results are self evident.
This is the true shame of our nation.

Why all the hubub?
I lived in NY for 40 years. It is the essence of one party rule. They are so in the red that they now will tax Itunes downloads and non diet soda. She can certainly be no worse than:

Schumer
Spitzer
Clinton
Rangel
Patterson
Blomberg
Dinkins and on and on and on

What the hell, the country appears to not give a rats @#$ about anything at all anymore, give her the seat before Sharpton asks for it himself. That state is nearly as finished as Michigan and California. Speaking of which, is there even one true blue state that can claim any semblance of fiscal discipline? Nevermind

Besides
If Al Franken qualifies in ANY state, she is fine for the Vampire State

Keep The Change
When looking at what the left will accept as a candidate,it is no wonder ,as a country,we are as a sinking ship.

All the bailing in the world will not help to right it. We will all go down with the rats who caused it in the first place.

Rowly
That is true to be sure. On the opposite end of the spectrum, John Kasich, J.C. Watts, Steve Largent and others realize that it is a cesspool and leave the halls of congress, thus leaving conservatives only the likes of Chuck Hagel, O. Snowe, and McCain and other reach across the aisle types to continue to stack the deck against the country by siding with the Social Insecurity believers that believe that taxpayers should give in excess of 300 million to "Planned" Abor....err Parenthood

Liberal Republicans Are Useful Idiots
Keep The Change: You are correct.
Liberal and moderate Republicans are used by the left to get what they want. They go along to get along and get rolled every time.

All of this is well and good.....
but the real question remains unanswered.

What do Randy, Paula and Simon think?

John (NY)
Your numerous posts criticizing other commenters regarding Obama are specious.

As a free citizen of this country, I can call Obama anything I want, just as the liberal posters are free to call Bush anything they want.

Get off your high horse. You have no moral superiority here.

caroline
Let her have a chance in the senate. She can't be any worse than Hillary, Charlie or uncle Teddy. When she falls on her face we can put an end to the Kennedy myth.

Kennedy - A Plague on America
What do American citizens have to do to be rid of these Kennedys? Christ all mighty, they keep popping up and acting like they're freaking royalty.

Not a single one of them is worth a crap. Except for the one that died in the war, not a single one of them has ever made a worthwhile contribution to America. Most of them have never had a job. They are nothing more than political parasites who live off the taxes of the electorate. What's really galling is that without exception, they think they are entitled to political privilege.

You would think that a family that breeds like flies would at some point spawn an offspring that was not a brain dead liberal.

I thought nature balanced all things? Apparently, not in the case of the Kennedys.

We don't live in a Democratic -
Republic anymore.

Our constitution is meaningless - unless it can be twisted to support some un-American law or prop open a door.

So Caroline is just another symptom of our nation's fall into the ash-bin of history.

And because the nation elected a non-citizen as president - we can fully expect Uncle Arnold - a Kennedy by marriage - to run for POTUS.

And don't worry, it will become very clear at the "right time" that Obama is NOT even a real American citizen.

So forget about Hollywood politicians - think Bollywood .. think Globally -- our Next president will NOT have to be an American.

Princess Caroline is just a blip on the radar screen.

Awesome Article
More recklessness on the part of the Kennedys--and here the person has no history that I know of, of recklessness.

No idea who put her up to this. It seems out of character except in terms of the Kennedy reputation for recklesss, poor judgment type behavior.

WANTED: No experience needed
What next, Paris Hilton. Why not? We already have a worthless President elect, who already thinks he is a God. He has no experience in management or government. Good grief, are these Libs for real. Same old crap, those who have the money get whatever they want. Those of us who don't have to suck it up and deal with the garbage. We need a vote for change, ya, someone who actually works for the people, and knows what the hell they are doing.

Princess Caroline Wants to Be Anointed
The left has always envied the aristocratic european model of government, they are also enamored with the european socialist model of government. This seems double-minded, until one remembers that the left prefers any kind of government that is not American.

Whether the liberal favors an aristocratic or a socialist brand is not important; because both forms are celebrated in the privileged "progressive" salons of the entitled, often monied, always arrogant left. Aristocrats and socialists are almost always more passionate than pragmatic. The fact that blue blooded americans blood so often runs hot as well, accounts for the high number of socialists in America who began as aristocrats.

This is why irrational ideas like anthropogenic global warming and radical self loathing organizations like PETA are so popular on the left. Emotionalism not empiricism is what drives the decision making of the liberal, and who doesn't get choked up when contemplating the rise of another self sacrificing Kennedy in the world of politics?

A classy Kennedy
Not all the Kennedys are crooks. Eunice Kennedy Shriver, for example, has done a great deal for the disabled:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eunice_Kennedy_Shriver

Paris Hilton For Senator
. . . And don't forget, VA lady, Paris really knows how to work a Prada handbag!

The Kennedy name is not all it takes
Can't blame someone for trying. She is obviously a private person and not doing it for the fame. Certainly doesn't need the money or attention. I wonder, what motivates her? I think, she sees with this administration, hope for some of the ideals she believes in and for once, is inspired to take part in a political process that just might put the best interests of the citizens of New York in the forefront.
Anyone who is familiar with her, knows that she has been a champion for New York's public school system and has played a huge role in improving the system. I think the Governor will make the right choice, regardless of what anyone thinks or says.

Who wrote her "constitutional" books ?
Dear participants of the discussion !
A quick search in the Library of Congress shows that both so-called "constitutional research" books by Mrs. Caroline Kennedy where written in co-authorship with Ellen Alderman. I have a strong suspicion, that being busy with family (I do have a great respect for that), with social obligations, with fundraising, and being wealthy, Mrs. Kennedy just hired Ellen Alderman to write these books. It was rather honorable of Mrs. Kennedy - to acknowledge other person's work, but I think it still was other person's work.

Caroline Kennedy
Her married name is Schlossberg (sp?). I'm not sure how to spell it. Her maiden name is Kennedy. She is not entitled to anything except the right to run for office. She is not entitled to obtain that office without voters consent. In this case, she would be appointed by the Governor of the State of New York to fill the vacancy of Hillary Clinton who is now in the Obama Cabinet.

WHATS IN A NAME!!
she is just apart of the Kennedy lucky sperm club! After all she works at the Metropoltion of art so lets give her the seat. Caroline has never ran for anything! And the left had a problem with Sarah Palin.I think we should give it to Chelsea Clinton at less she lived at the white House which would make her more qualified than Caroline.

Princess Carowhine...
We don't need pedigrees without experience. I would hope that all of the posters here would like a seat in the Senate or for their heirs to have a chance. Some of us are actually sperm-challenged, but still have the right to seek office.

"We the People" doesn't just include Kennedys, Bushes, Clintons, etc.

The US is SUPPOSED to be a democracy not an aristocracy.

I was not aware that NY has seen any improvement in public education. It is a complete joke in terms of results per pupil expenditure. That system is destroying a once proud nation. I still have many relatives in NY suffering under the corrupt NEA with their allegiance to the Dimicrats. She may be trying to help, but only educational choice can help. You know, the kind that OBummer will exercise in DC?

The fear inspired by Caroline is amazing
how else to explain all the utter nonsense spewed by left and right about her qualifications, etc.? Guess the Kennedy name is so powerful, you all turn to nattering nabobs of negativism.

Caroline
Is just another rich liberal who will not be affected by the social engineering and central planning (Marxist) politics that they foist upon the workers. We do not need another George Soros acolyte in the Senate. Oh yes, we do not need another Kennedy. They are not genetically engineered to lead after all.

Caroline vs Al
If you measure Al Franken against Caroline I would say she is more qualified. What ever happens it is up to the Govenor to choose according the the law that is apparently acceptable by the majority of us. If she proves to be just a flake in this temporary position the voters will dump her so relax. If the accusations of Franken stealing the election is true it is just petty larcency. The voters have spoken one thing loud and clear. The majority of the voters do not like Coleman.
