Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

"There are two questions we will never have to ask ourselves, 'Who is this man?' and 'Can we trust this man with the presidency?'"
-- Fred Thompson on John McCain, Sept. 2.

WASHINGTON -- This was the most effective line of the entire Republican convention: a ringing affirmation of John McCain's authenticity and a not-so-subtle indictment of Barack Obama's insubstantiality. What's left of this line of argument, however, after John McCain picks Sarah Palin for vice president?

Palin is an admirable and formidable woman. She has energized the Republican base and single-handedly unified the Republican convention behind McCain. She performed spectacularly in her acceptance speech. Nonetheless, the choice of Palin remains deeply problematic.

It's clear that McCain picked her because he had decided that he needed a game-changer. But why? He'd closed the gap in the polls with Obama. True, that had more to do with Obama sagging than McCain gaining. But what's the difference? You win either way.

Obama was sagging because of missteps that reflected the fundamental weakness of his candidacy. Which suggested McCain's strategy: Make this a referendum on Obama, surely the least experienced, least qualified, least prepared presidential nominee in living memory.

Palin fatally undermines this entire line of attack. This is through no fault of her own. It is simply a function of her rookie status. The vice president's only constitutional duty of any significance is to become president at a moment's notice. Palin is not ready. Nor is Obama. But with Palin, the case against Obama evaporates.

So why did McCain do it? He figured it's a Democratic year. The Republican brand is deeply tarnished. The opposition is running on "change" in a change election. So McCain gambled that he could steal the change issue for himself -- a crazy brave, characteristically reckless, inconceivably difficult maneuver -- by picking an authentically independent, tough-minded reformer. With Palin, he doubles down on change.

The problem is the inherent oddity of the incumbent party running on change. Here were Republicans -- the party that controlled the White House for eight years and both houses of Congress for five -- wildly cheering the promise to take on Washington. I don't mean to be impolite, but who's controlled Washington this decade?

Moreover, McCain was giving up his home turf of readiness to challenge Obama on his home turf of change. Can that possibly be pulled off? The calculation was to choose demographics over thematics. Palin's selection negates the theme of readiness. But she does bring important constituencies. She has the unique potential of energizing the base while at the same time appealing to independents.

This is unusual. Normally the wing-nut candidate alienates the center. Palin promises a twofer because of her potential appeal to the swing-state Reagan Democrats that Hillary Clinton carried in the primaries. Not for reasons of gender -- Clinton didn't carry those because she was a woman -- but because more culturally conservative working-class whites might find affinity with Palin's small-town, middle/frontier American narrative and values.

The gamble is enormous. In a stroke, McCain gratuitously forfeited his most powerful argument against Obama. And this was even before Palin's inevitable liabilities began to pile up -- inevitable because any previously unvetted neophyte has "issues." The kid. The state trooper investigation. And worst, the paucity of any Palin record or expressed conviction on the major issues of our time.

McCain has one hope. It is suggested by the strength of Palin's performance Wednesday night. In a year of compounding ironies, the McCain candidacy could be saved, and the Palin choice vindicated, by one thing: Palin does an Obama.

Obama showed that star power can trump the gravest of biographical liabilities. The sheer elegance, intelligence and power of his public presence have muted the uneasy feeling about his unreadiness. Palin does not reach Obama's mesmeric level. Her appeal is far more earthy, workmanlike and direct. Yet she managed to banish a week's worth of unfriendly media scrutiny and self-inflicted personal liabilities with a single triumphant speech.

Now, Obama had 19 months to make his magic obscure his thinness. Palin has nine weeks. Nevertheless, if she too can neutralize unreadiness with star power, then the demographic advantages she brings McCain -- appeal to the base and to Reagan Democrats -- coupled with her contribution to the reform theme, might just pay off. The question is: Can she do the magic -- unteleprompted extemporaneous magic, from now on -- for the next nine weeks?

Yes, it surely comes down to this
The questions have been asked by Mr. Krauthammer, and they are indeed the questions most worthy. The start power of Palin is a roll of the dice and a flat out double down, winner take all gamble. This choice has blown away the opposition game plan, and placed an emphasis back on Obama. The ball is in his court.

Jack Kennedy in 1956?
Oh, Mr. Krauthammer. Sen. McCain has not undermined the readiness theme; the nomination of Gov. Palin accentuates Sen. Obama's lack of accomplishment(s).

Gov. Palin may well be prepared to show like George Kennan or she may present like Ronald Reagan in the area of national security. We'll know soon enough. If she's a successor to the simple clarity of Ronald Reagan, then her understanding of boundaries and barricades will thematic. If she's a great student of foggy bottom and has pin stripes in the closet like some portrait of Dean Acheson, then we'll all see her as a worthy foreign policy cognoscenti.

For heavens sake, Harry Truman didn't know of the Manhattan project on the day he became president.

If Pawlenty, Huckabee, or Romney had gotten the call, we'd still be asking if they were sufficiently versed in Clausewitz to have been given the job.

Truth is that McCain is a naval aviator and he does have a risk takers eye. Military officers are trained to recognize and promote talent. McCain has done exactly this with Palin.

Palin is not a neophyte in this contest. She's a presence that will stand proximate to Sen. McCain and stand as a contrast to the worn Sen. Biden.

Respectfully disagree
In fact, word came out today that she can in fact do unteleprompted extemporaneous magic: "Lipstick!"

Further, I would question the thesis that McCain went with this selection to shift what he regarded a dull campaign narrative. Call me simple, but I trust him when he says he always has the country's best interest at heart.

Also, the notion that he undercut his best attack on Obama by selecting Palin just doesn't wash. Not exactly 'apples & oranges' because of the 'heart-beat away' factor -- but Obama IS, afterall, on the TOP of the Dem ticket.

McKinley had his Teddy; FDR had his Harry; McCain has his Sarah.

When you are smart, you are very smart.
When you are dumb, you are very dumb.
This is the dumbest article I have ever read from you.(saying something after the last one)

"Make this a referendum on Obama, surely the least experienced, least qualified, least prepared presidential nominee in living memory.

Palin fatally undermines this entire line of attack."

What a crock of ignorance this is.
First place she is not running against Barry Soetoro, John McCain is.
Secondly she has more executive experience than all the other three combined as a Mayor and a Governor.

The other three being Senators just decided to vote yeah or nay.

More responsibility being a Governor than there is for a Senator

Wow...Krauthammer is wrong.
I normally agree with Sir Charles - nearly 100%. And perhaps my enthusiasm for Gov. Palin has overcome my common senses. But what comes bleeding through this article is his cynicism born of Washington-insider punditry.

He's great on knowing DC politics, but he's missing something here. Sarah changes the game. No one but the media, the left, and the pundits really care too much that she doesn't have the experience THEY expect. She has all the experience we need.

He also misses this: real people (like us) recognize real character - and she and her family have got it in spades. I like Romney and Giuliani- but they've already got other priorities that don't really meet ours.

She's got our priorities first - she's not tainted. Every other one has. She has the grit and common sense needed for the job, and has proven it to OUR satisfaction.

Sorry Sir Charles - most of us don't know what you pundits are on about on this one...

"Duties" of a community organizer

Obama's own words:

In return, organizing teaches as nothing else does the beauty and strength of everyday people. Through the songs of the church and the talk on the stoops, through the hundreds of individual stories of coming up from the South and finding any job that would pay, of raising families on threadbare budgets, of losing some children to drugs and watching others earn degrees and land jobs their parents could never aspire to — it is through these stories and songs of dashed hopes and powers of endurance, of ugliness and strife, subtlety and laughter, that organizers can shape a sense of community not only for others, but for themselves

True Grit…Be Informed…

Regardless of which Political Party you prefer, “True Grit” is the answer…be informed. Ask yourself this simple question, “Which Candidates really have “True Grit”? Then seek your answer, but do not look to the mainstream media for your answer. These are troubling times in which we live, so look too History and its troubling times for your answer.

Perfect examples of "True Grit" can be found in people like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, FDR, Winston Churchill, Eisenhower, JFK, Reagan…to John McCain and Sarah Palin. As a Vietnam Vet, I get chills even now when I remember those days and think about John McCain’s traumatic experience at the hands of the North Vietnamese. It aggravates me that the Democratic Party has tilted so far to the left…I cannot even recognize it as the Party of FDR and JFK. Everyone should understand and deserves to experience what "True Grit" is and what it means to have “True Grit”.

The United States and the next President are going to be faced with some major challenges both domestic and foreign. On the foreign front…a resurgent Russia, an energized China, a global economy with serious problems, to the next chapter of the turmoil in the Middle East and dealing with the Osama bin Ladens of the world. On the domestic front…an energy crisis that spells trouble for all Americans, taxes and spending out of control, legal and illegal immigration that continues to increase, health care and education costs rise as quality is stagnated or declining, entitlement programs that will bankrupt this country.

What of Mrs. Palin's liabilities? Like McCain, she makes up for, in sheer determination to do the right thing. The intellect and a values system second to none and some good old common sense; there is no decision she or McCain would make, that I could not trust and support; because they have “True Grit”!

Dear Charles
I like your columns and I deeply respect your usually clear thinking and logical conclusions, however I have a problem with you and this blog.
As a Jew, I am unable to reconcile your writing on this blog while at the same time, Pat Buchanan, one of the worst bigots, anti Semites, and Israel haters of our times, also writes here. To many Jews this is not a small matter since his terrible reputation and lousy analysis has already spilled over onto yours and Bert Prelutsy's. Make no mistake, Pat Buchanan has an irrational hatred for Jews and Israel, no less that David Duke, and by participating on this site with him, both you and Bert make him kosher.

The more I think about it
The more I'm led to believe this pivot to the 'change' message will be the straw that broke the camel's back for McCain.

For 18 months now, Change=Obama. It seems to me that whenever McCain utters the word people will make an automatic association with Obama.

This is marketing 101.

Absolutely brilliant!
The selection of Gov. Palen was absolutely brilliant.
This is a woman who has more practical experience in governing than her running mate and the two opponents!
She and her family are people all the average people in America can relate too. She knows the struggles of the every day American. She has experienced the ups and downs of everyday life and run a state.
I wasn't sure before if I would vote...I am now and Palin was the determining factor. Perhaps I am not alone...McCain got my vote now!

She's not a "game changer"
I have been following Sarah Palin since I've first heard of her in April. Ever since then I have been pushing for John McCain to bring her on as VP. Not a single other person on his "short list" gave me cause for excitement about the GOP -- yet I would die if Obama was successfully voted as our next president.

What Sarah does is solidifies and complements McCain's character and integrity. It doesn't matter to me that she's a woman, but I'm thrilled that she is. I have always admired strong, respectful women like her and not only would she be a great VP but also a great role model.

My test for president rests not only on the person's character but further on the idea of -- if we were in a war, who's lead would I follow?

Krauthammer dead wrong on this one
As Talent Scout CO pointed out correctly, Gov. Palin does indeed accentuate Obama's lack of accomplishments. Furthermore, in hindsight now, she was the only one who could have ignited the enthusiasm of the core.
I for one, was very apathetic regarding John McCain, on account of McCain-Feingold and "Comprehensive" Immigration reform, unsure even about SCOTUS appointments.
Gov.Palin has definitely changed all that.
Murphdog HI has really hit the nail right on the head :"She's got our priorities first - she's not tainted. Every other one has. She has the grit and common sense needed for the job, and has proven it to OUR satisfaction."
Krauthammer has the "Beltway Perspective" and THAT is what is truly tainted.
America is sick and tired of the DC-Beltway good old boy network, and that includes most politicians in a bizarre "partnership" with a form of "Status Quo" - "Don't rock the boat too much" philosophy.
Gov.Palin has more executive experience than the other three combined, she has more grit than they do, she has more credibility, at least with mainstream America, she has more guts and far more common sense too! And she is young, aggressive to boot! To top it off, she does make Obama/Biden look more like the "neophytes" THEY truly are!

Highlight the experience issue
Perhaps Mr. Krauthammer fails to realize that any examination of Gov. Palin's experience demands an examination of Sen. Obama's experience. In turn, this leads to an examination of their comparative records in office. Neither examination favors Sen. Obama, who must not be allowed to shill himself as a nebulous but inspiring figure rather than a politician whose experience and record define him. Put differently, the only way to knock Sen. Obama off of his self-built, media affirmed pedastal was to lure him into the mud with Gov. Palin on the experience issue, and it's working like a charm despite the cost involved.

What's the cost? It is the notion that a vote for the McCain ticket is just as risky as a vote for the Obama ticket because Sen. McCain could keel over at any moment, leaving Gov. Palin to take over. The risk, however, is a wash because Sen. Obama is no more qualified to be president than Gov. Palin. Therefore, attacks on Sen. McCain's age and health reinvite comparisons between Sen. Obama and Gov. Palin, who will demonstrate her affinity with Middle America as well as other key constituencies necessary for victory, noting that Sen. Obama has already done much to alienate himself from said constituencies.

Putting all of the above together, it's clear that by picking Gov. Palin for the VP slot, Sen. McCain has coralled Sen. Obama inside a fence of issues and questions that favor Sen. McCain. In all my time observing politics and admiring political tactics, I've never witnessed a more devastating masterstroke.

Who's the majority party in Congress?
The Democrats have had a Congressional majority for the past two years and have sat on their butts, doing little more than launching insulting investigations of the opposing party. Change is either replacing them, or forcing do-nothings like Reid, Pelosi, Obama, Biden, ad nauseum to pay as much attention to American workers as they do to the private fetishes of George Soros and other Richie Riches.

Palin's experience
You're right, McCain is emphasizing change now, but I think you're underestimating their experience. I agree with most of the comments above. McCain himself still has his experience. Palin I realise lacks experience working in Washington, but she still has executive experience, so I don't think it completely undercuts that part of their campaign. Granted I'm sure there were more experienced alternatives, but Palin's the VP, not at the top of the ticket.

Maybe you should tell us what counts as experience, Mr. Krauthammer. Being a mayor and governor don't count as experience? Yes, her years on the job are a little thin, but Obama's are thinner.

I think how she became governor of Alaska is any indication of how she'll do against Biden, she'll do awesome, as long as McCain gets her up to speed on foreign affair policies of his. Then after being his VP for 4 to 8 years, I would totally vote for her to be president!

Experience?
I assure you, Palin has experience, as she was fully vetted, despite the rumor. People should instead ask if Obama was vetted, or if one of George Soros' representatives simply came to the Obama residence 19 months ago with a suitcase of money in hand and asked Barack if he wanted to be president.

I can't see
where Sarah's so called lack of experience is a forfeit of the case again Obama.

Sarah is intelligent and that over shadows Obama's ability to rattle on like a magpie.

We've all heard people who could 'run off at the mouth', but couldn't do third grade math.

Tht's Obama!

Just Words
Charles , my friend, your article are "just words". You are so often wrong I wonder why your opinon is even listen to?

Fundamental Values
Sarah Palin has fundamental values that are the cornerstone of her being. To express them remains the same, all the time. And she is proud to express them. She can't be tripped up on these values.

Obama may have fundamental values, but those values can't be expressed to win an election in the USA. Havng to cover those values and appear to have "other" values will, in the end, make itself known. Pity the poor fool.

experience may not matter; gravitas will
I only read Krauthammer some of the time.

I am not a neocon and thus have little sympathy for Krauthammer's views on foreign affairs.

Wasn't Krauthammer lambasting the Palin decision as recently as a few days ago?

Now he seems to think her candidacy may end up rescuing McCain.

I don't agree with Krauthammer that selecting Palin has invalidated any argument the GOP can make on Obama's lack of experience.

How has "experience" benefited our Beloved Republic this decade?

Let's contemplate that.

GOP controlled both Congress and the whitehouse for much of this decade, and look at the achievements: staggering deficits, unpopular war that a sizable majority of Americans now conclude was a huge mistake, outrageous gas price hikes and general rise in inflation(both of which erode Americans' purchasing power).

And that's just for starters.

No wonder McCain's acceptance speech last night invoked the necessity for change.

So the lack of experience does not affect either Palin or Obama.

But gravitas does.

And on that, McCain has it, and Obama does not.

I am still undecided for November.

I may end up supporting McCain/Palin, but it will largely depend upon whether McCain has any inclination to eradicate the infestation of neocon advisors that descended, like rats fleeing a sinking Bush administration ship, onto his campaign.

Or at least reject their advice. He has shown no inclination to do that.

I utterly reject Obama on energy, guns, and I think it is a fair question to inquire if he can be tough enough to deal with some foreign leaders...but to his credit he does not view the world thru the distorted and grotesque neocon prism.

A great communicator
Thanks to Hollywood and its "political braintrust", star power and good looks are what matter (unfortunately). Sarah Palin has both, and to add icing to the cake, she has guts and an authentic, normal American life with normal, decent parents and relatives.

Best of all, she is a natural-born COMMUNICATOR. George W. Bush is not, and that's a big reason he appears to be a failure to many--the worst possible thing he can do is give a speech from a podium. He cannot get his facial expressions right (is usually puckered up trying to keep from grinning or smirking during serious-matter talk), and his drawl is annoying in a prepared speech. In conversational interviews as O'Reilly and Brett Baer did GWB, he was fantastic ..and authentic.

Enter Sarah Palin: She is the best public speaker I've ever heard on a convention platform. This will carry her a long, long way, and so will her good looks and authenticity.

She does not have to FAKE being "one of the little people" outside the Ivory Tower and Hollywood, as Obama does. He is a fake from beginning to end.

MY 'TRUE TO LIFE' TICKET
If I were to compare my family to the way Government 'Should' be, my Proud and Patriotic husband is President and I (his wife) am his Proud and Patriotic Vice President.
As President, my husband upholds our Vows (our Constitution) of values and protects our children(our constituents). Both of us would fight with our lives for for our children and our values.
We would never associate with a terrorist or succumb to terrorists, we would never sit and listen to 'anyone' GDing our Country, we would never knowingly promise what we knew we couldn't do or deliver, we would never travel to foriegn neighborhoods seeking their approval, before staying home and taking care of our own family and community. And we would never 'Ask' or 'Demand' what our Country should 'Do' for us, before standing on our own two (actually four) feet.
It is true we were not 'Elected", but we, like the majority of American families, represent and are an example of, the way our American Government 'Ought' to be.

To Seth:
"or if one of George Soros' representatives simply came to the Obama residence 19 months ago with a suitcase of money in hand and asked Barack if he wanted to be president."

You are 100% correct!! I've been yelling at the TV for months - who is this man? Where did he come from? Who's behind him? Who's pulling his strings?

Of course the MSM aren't going to do any investigative journalism - they're too busy being snowed.

Obama's resume is ridiculous - he's done NOTHING but align himself with America hating people - Michele, Ayers, Jay Wright, etc., etc. He reminds me of the Jonestown guy passing out his lethal cool-aid. No thanks BO - I'll stick with the mavericks.

Sorry Charles - I usually bow to your wisdom, but on this one I think we, the non-Beltway, average Americans, are the ones who see clearly. McCain DOES care first about America, he can change the focus of the Republican party and Sarah Palin is one of us and we know it.

I used to be a political junkie - but became so discouraged with the Bush administration and Congress (even under GOP rule), I lost interest. I knew I had to vote against BO because he's a clear and present danger to my country - but I wasn't enthused. Then along came Sarah Palin - and I'm not only "juiced", I'm ready to part with some of my hard earned cash and even work the trenches for this team.

Don't sell us short Charles - we know the real thing when we see it.

Sorry Charlie..
.as the old Starkiss tuna commercial went!

I too usually agree with your analysis 100%! But ...this time something went wrong! I'm with RCB,Lynne and talent scout! You seriously missed the basket on this one!

I haven't read your most recent prior column but based on all the lib-trolls that 'used' your opinions for their arguments ...I suspected something was askew.

Charles ...with all due respect ...and you are certainly due a lot of that ...You really need to go back over your notes...and review your conclusions when the likes of a 'bryce1' agrees with you!

Chery
You note the big difference between Obama and Palin. She responds to questions with clarity. Obama has to bury his real position and calculate what he wants voters to hear. Often, he chooses wordy obscurity, as when asked when life begins. I don't trust McCain, but his one word reply to the same question was to his credit. The issue will be decided by whether there are more practical voters in touch with reality, or more naive dreaming fools armed only with good intentions.

fishy
Thank you for an upbeat post. Nice way to start the day.

The author ignores logic...
Mr. Krauthammer seems to have decided to read something into the campaign that is not really in evidence. McCain vs. Obama can still be about experience, or Obama's lack of experience.

Palin could become president but Obama would become president.

I don't see how that changes the fundamental experience argument between the presidential candidates.

Obama picked Biden as backup based on experience. If McCain left office the 25th amendment provides for Palin to nominate her own version of Biden and create the same combination Obama represents from the very beginning.

McCain can continue to pound experience and the fact that it is at the top of the ticket in the GOP.

I don't see the problem the author describes.

Krauthammer's 'B' Game??
It is surprising and disappointing to see an article by Mr. Krauthammer that appears to be a knee jerk, reflexive reaction to events instead of the purposeful, studied and insightful assessment that I have come to appreciate. The mile wide, eighth inch deep punditry is uncharacteristic and I wonder if the stakes are just too high for a simple, straight forward, unequivocal analysis without undertones of hedging...

Jerabaub
Obama has no idea what the world is about because to him, it is I I I-ME ME ME.

He has never bothered to learn how our own government works, leave alone the world.

just what IS biden's experience?
Biden voted to cut off funds to south vietnam, resulting in the slaughter of millions after we prematurely left. He voted not to fund the contras. He voted not to send money to the pro-american government in el salvador. He voted against improving our missle defense and against SDI. He voted against the first Gulf War. He said that we should partition Iraq, a sure prescription fo civil war. He questioned General Patreus' integrity and military acumen.

His foreign policy 'experience' seems to be reflexively anti american, the result of which tends to result in much more death than he is trying to avoid. I'll take Gov. Palin's track record of relatively little experience over a profoundly bad one.

Respectfully Disagree
Normally Dr. Krauthammer, you are 100% right on. I enjoyed your speech in Dallas this year as I am one of your biggest fans. But you've got Gov. Palin dead wrong. I appreciate your wary eye in assessing her, but she's got way more experience than Obama and if it were her against Obama, I would STILL never vote for radical leftists. I believe you need to re-think this one...

McCAIN / PALIN 2008!

For Once I Disagree with Krauthammer
There is no reason McCain can't stand on any podium and say he has more experience than Obama. They are both running for president. The only thing they can't say is that Palin has more experience in national politics than Biden. Charles makes it seem that we should plan on McCain dying in office. I mean, come on, he is only 72.

Experience issue still relevant
The first comment on this article is insightful, and right on. I would only add that Obama's experience is open to mockery. His community organizing is laughable and he has no accomplishments of note as an elected official. To this day, his mouthpieces are stopped cold when challenged to cite his accomplishments.

In addition to his lack of accomplishment, he was wrong on the surge and is flat wrong on energy. That last issue alone would probably be enough to put McCain and anyone in office.

Republicans for change
I too have respect for Mr. Krauthammer...,but I do think he called this wrong.

I listened to McCain's speech. Yes...,I know a lot was yadda, yadda,. but the nugget of truth was that he and Palin will set D. C. on it's rear. I think they will.

I Agree ....
The big unknown is how many additional swing voters will swing to McCain because of Sarah. I think we might be underestimating the number of angry young conservative women across the country who resent the way Sarah's family was treated by the elite media. Liberal feminists no longer own the label exclusively.

That Experience Thing
If I were bothered by something--and I am--it's the the idea that "experience" is critical. The Founding Fathers pointed out in the Federalist papers that issues are transitory, and character is everything. Furthermore, like CEOs who move from cola companies to diaper companies to computer companies, those in high office always have advisors. No individual can be saddled with knowing every nuance of everything. Instead, executives use the advice of individuals closer to the given topic of interest, and then work out what the correct course of action must be.

Does a President not have a cabinet? For what is that cabinet intended? See my point?

Yes, I realize that this lets Obama off the experience hook. That's fine by me--the issue is, was, and always has been: character. The man that professes Christ in front of Rick Warren and the Saddleback congregation some months after speaking of small-town folks "clinging to their guns and religion" clearly has some character flaws, and an inability to recognize them.

McCain and Palin appear a lot more self-aware.

Dr. K, I point if I may: Washington needs to change. The party can change itself, it only needs someone to set the ball in motion. If it hadn't changed up until now, it's because Senator McCain was just one voice amid 100. That, hopefully, is about to change.

Whaaaaaa! Spoiled Babies 4 A Change

The young skulls full of mush keep whining about change, and when asked to say exactly what change they want, they haven't got a clue.

Change can be good or bad. If my watch stops, and I replace the battery, and I know it is 4 hours off, I also have to know which direction to make the change, or my watch is still wrong.

These fools often remind me of a nursery, about an hour or two after lunch, when all the diapers are poopy and all they know is they want a change.

Of course, I believe that the mastermind Marxists who are behind all the deceptive slogans are not so naive, and these are the people who need to be exposed for the posers they are, and the end goal that they really have, which is toxic to the United States of America.

ANZUS
Yes, Charles. I prefer your commentary to almost anyone, but on this one the analysis fails the synthesis. Palin is a brilliant pick and I can't wait to see her debate Joe Biden for confirmation of this. With an historical eye, I thought we might get a female Commander-in-Chief in 2020. Recently, we females in Sydney had to explain to an American lawyer the importance of 26 August 1920 when American women first got the right to vote. (Geraldine Ferraro was born on 26 August; Hillary's DNC speech was on 26 August). When Palin "dog-whistled" to Australia with her reference to Harry S. Truman, our ears pricked up. There are 25 million of us down here in the Pacific, and our intelligence agencies do a lot of talking:
McKinley and Roosevelt seems most apt to me.

Thompson's Question
Fred Thompson asked an interesting question that has been on the lips of Conservatives for a long time about John McCain- Can you trust him? There can be no doubt that his personal story is very compelling, but it does not really answer the question how will he govern? Will conservatives get the new John McCain working hard to earn the trust of conservatives by flip-floping on his own positions and even in legislation that he sponsored. Or will they get the bipartison independent unreliable conservative. After all Picking Sarah Palin is not gonna change McCain and Palin will not have the power of Dick Cheney.

He may have launched her national career and found a hero for Far Right Conservatives to rally around, but she will not be in the Oval Office or in the Cabinet.

And if conservatives take the time to carefully listen to what McCain said last night and believe it to be true is he really their man.

Folks
"There have been times when I put my personal ambitions before the public interest" and "I have sometimes placed party allegiance above obligations to my constituents and country"
from John McCain's 2002 memoir, "Worth the Fighting For", New York Times, "McCain Sets His Course, Vowing End to 'Rancor'" 5 September 2008

The elderly McCain, who as Rush would say served in Vietnam, bases his whole campaign on a lie clearly stated above in his own words.

If you want real change - VOTE OBAMA

Dr. Krautmhammer's observations
A thoughtful, incisive though obviously unpopular column, Dr. Krauthammer.

I was flipping back and forth between Fox and CNN on Wednesday night, primarily because CNN aired a few speeches that Fox did not. Every time I switched to CNN, the bottom of the screen was displaying text about either McCain's bouts with melanoma or his age. It was quite obvious that the intent was to make this not a contest between McCain and Obama, but between Palin and Obama.

I personally believe that Palin would make a fine president along the lines of Harry Truman. However, we shouldn't dismiss the fact that she IS relatively inexperienced for someone whose sole job as vice-president is to assume the presidency if need be. It’s guaranteed that the Democrats will waste no opportunity to press this point, if only to take the focus off Obama's own inexperience.

Even if Biden has greater historical
knowlege of past foreign policy and has correct judgement on the future (his past votes do not convince me of that possibility)there is absolutely no guarantee that Obama will listen or ever admit that he does not 'know' better. This to me is far more frightening than having Palin in the second spot with the remote possibility of ascending to the presidency. Obama can not admit to being wrong on anything. Why do people assume he will listen to Biden???Obama does not seem able to clearly state his position on anything other than he thinks President Bush is an absolute failure. Obama has 300 or so foreign policy advisors during this campaign and is still unable to state a clear position and then stick to it.
To me, McCain and Palin represent more love of country and willingness to 'serve' the people and minimize governmental control over our individual decisions. If either Obama or McCain
should die while in office, I would feel more secure with Palin as president than I would with Biden in that position.
We need people who have demonstrated the ability to work with all people in leadership positions and not blindly follow a party line. McCain has demonstrated this many times and Palin had R's, D's and Independents in her administration. It is time to get our country's leaders working together for the good of country instead of holding to a party line in all things.

QUALIFICATIONS
John McCain is arguably the most qualified candidate for the presidency since George Washington. The selection of a complete Washington outsider like Sarah Palin seems perfectly logical. She does have an enviable biography to take on the fight that McCain has been spoiling for.
Her history indicates that she is a quick study and, with the help of a very experienced teacher, will gain the insight and understanding necessary to take the next step up to a capable president in short order.
Please save us from the bitter idealogues and the media. Watch out for this Pit Bull.

IN NO WAY...
.
...does "the case against Obama evaporate."

Vote for McCain/Palin, you get a President with experience and integrity.

Vote for Zerobama, you get a President with thin skin, a thinner resume, and an open invitation to the demonstrated thuggery of his followers.

I did not expect such an educated man as Krauthammer to make this misjudgement.

The One Time I disagree with Charles
Palin is a stunning pick - yes, she is relatively unknown; yes - she has a remarkable record of achievement; yes - she has had a meteoric rise in politics; and yes - she gives one helluva speech.

I think Charles is wrong - for once. First, she is more experienced than Obama - her executive experience as Governor overseeing an $11 billion annual budget and tens of thousands of state employees. She also has a remarkable record of achievement and govt reform. Obama has none of this - he basically has no record. No executive experience, no major legislation authored, not achievements as a community organizer or Constitutional law professor. He gives a helluva speech, but he has no experience whatsoever.

McCain is right - the Dems are 12 points or more ahead in the polls, and McCain would have probably run a competitive campaign that would have lost if he selected the standard VP candidate - Romney, etc. Palin has a record, and it is good. Plus, she has charisma, which is great, and something the GOP and McCain desperately need. She is a game changer, and now McCain and the GOP can win. We'll see, gonna be one helluva race.

Palin...
...is there to give credibility to the completely false idea that McCain will run a conservative White House. He will not.

Palin's speech was written for her by a neo-con. McCain has pledged to follow the Bush (neo-con) policies of endless war and fascism. McCain is on record as opposing "pork" but that is a very tiny part of the budget. He is also on record as a lover of liberal programs. He is a self-described enemy of the U.S. Constitution. He will not govern as a conservative.

Palin may be a Maverick. She may really be opposed to corruption within her party and within government in general, but unless some circumstance leads to her succession to the top of the ticket there will be no reform under McCain's leadership. Palin will not be able to influence a stubborn egotist like McCain. McCain is a dull tool, but an accomplished liar.

Conservatives who like Palin should stop to consider that they are still voting for McCain for President. His record is one of deceit, and betrayal of conservatives. McCain cannot be trusted.

The selection of Palin is a gambit to get votes that were being denied to him. To some extent it is working. McCain is laughing at the gullible fools that are buying into his simple trick.

To talent scout
As Sarah said in her acceptance speech, the presidency is not a "journey of personal growth". Besides, how many memoirs of Obambi can we take?

Why so cynical Chuck?
There are many people who know how the Washington machine works. Our need is for someone with core principles to drive it. If Mrs. Palin is what she appears to be, our future prospects are brighter than they've been for some time. The lack of DC experience means the lack also of obligations, entanglements and skewed views nurtured in the swamp.

See quote above, see McCain flip flopping on issues as basic as terror and see Palin with real ethics prolems now and in her past. The integrity issue is Obama/Biden as is the experience issue when you look at McCain actual record much of his "experience" we can do without.

"Vote for ..., you get a President with thin skin, a thinner resume, and an open invitation to the demonstrated thuggery of his followers."

Thin skin????? LMAO Do you know anything about the elderly senator McCain from AZ? Good grief!

The Left has not shown
this much hatred against a strong woman since the days of Margaret Thatcher.

Need I say more?!?!

McCain's Judgement
Senator Keating, oops, McCain managed to find the only Republican in Alaska not under indictment, arrest, or investigation to pick as his running mate. Oh no, she's under investigation herself. Great judgement call Senator McCain.

I Seldom Disagree with Krauthammer
But this time I do. I'm a Bob Barr supporting, card-carrying Libertarian, but I think Palin brings more to the table than the other three "major" candidates combined. Neither Obama nor Biden has any executive experience at all: ZERO! McCain claims some military executive experience, but claim is tough to envision for someone who was essentially a fighter pilot and then a POW. Whatever additional executive experience he acquired in the military, he has not made the case to my satisfaction that he's executive material.

Palin on the other hand has served as both mayor and governor. Okay, Alaska isn't New York or California, but it is an oil state and has international boundaries with two other countries. She's also helped run a family family business, so she has more first hand economic experience than the other three combined, too. So, no she's not Romney, Huckabee, Ridge, or one of several governors. But she is a bright, feisty, woman with executive experience, and I can't believe some of Hillary's former supporters aren't able to see that Palin has more executive experience than Obama (or Biden or McCain).

Let's hope for McCain's sake that she doesn't over emphasize her anti-choice leanings and lose the Hillary folks.

If she were at the top of the ticket, I might consider voting GOP because she has some real Libertarian leanings, but with McCain at the top I have no problem monetarily supporting and voting for Bob Barr.

YOU JUST DON'T GET IT
Obviously the political left, evidenced by the nasty comments, doesn't have a clue what America wants in government. We want integrity, honesty, conviction, and something different from the President and Congress we now have. We are tired of the few telling us what is good for us. It's time to turn things around and tell the Washington establishment what WE want.

Funny, I can't relate...
I don't believe in creationism, proudly displaying teenaged out of wedlock children, lying, financial mismanagement, belonging and being involved with and supporting an extreme hate America group and possibly (if the National Enguirer is to be believed) marital infidelity. But hey, thats just me.

Absolutely brilliant!
The selection of Gov. Palen was absolutely brilliant.
This is a woman who has more practical experience in governing than her running mate and the two opponents!
She and her family are people all the average people in America can relate too.

A FEW PROBLEMS WITH THIS COLUMN:
1. By selecting Palin, McCain has NOT NEGATED
HIS BEING READY TO LEAD; if we selected
people for jobs based on the fact that they could die in the following months, that would negate anybody for any job. How ridiculous can people get?
2. MCCAIN DIDN'T STEAL ANY 'CHANGE' FROM OBAMA; OBAMA NEVER HAD ANY TO BEGIN WITH. Because some slick talker provides crazy ideals for things that would be different (the ocean tides will come in and a light will shine down from "somewhere" (he can't even give his own God the credit for the light) and the planet will be healed". That is not change, it's fantasy at it's dumbest.
3. You pick one: Lets not vote for McCain because he might DIE and Palin may not be ready to be President -OR-
LETS BEGIN WITH A GUY WHO IS NOT READY TO BE PRESIDENT AND START OUT WITH ALL THOSE PERCEIVED PROBLEMS RIGHT FROM THE START? Where the hell is the logic in that? If dems are so afraid of unreadiness, why put a guy right off the bat in the Oval Office who presents that problem?
IF WE WANTED JOE BIDEN IN THE WHITE HOUSE, WE ALL WOULD HAVE VOTED FOR HIM IN THE PRIMARIES.
WE DIDN'T - SO WHY ARE DEMS MAKING HIM PRESIDENT NOW - IS HE THEIR TOKEN?
3. BUT REPUBLICANS HAVE CONTROLLED THE WHITE HOUSE AND LOOK AT THE MESS WE'RE IN: I SUBMIT THAT IF FOLKS WANT TO BLAME SOMEBODY, TRY BLAMING 19 TERRORISTS THAT EVEN DEMS DIDN'T SEE BLOWING UP BUILDINGS AND KILLING AMERICANS; THEN LOOK BACK AT THE CLINTON YEARS AND ASK YOURSELF WHY CLINTON WAS HAVING ORAL SEX INSTEAD OF KILLING BIN LADEN WHEN HE SHOULD HAVE: WHEN WE GOT REPEATEDLY ATTACKED OPENLY AROUND THE GLOBE. HE DID NOTHING. The difference is that Republicans spent money on security;the dems spent on Woodstock museums. Putting any democrat in the White House is akin to putting a five year old in charge.

Pete
Where you been buddy, for the last 8 years? Oh and I thought the whole experience thing was the fact that Mccains been a Washington insider the last 26 years? Don't you worry though, change is coming.

Ron ROTFLMAO - Card Carrying Moron
Hey Ron, ya really ought to check things out before you go running off at the mouth, If you did you wouldn't appear to be such a moron. As Mark Twain once quipped, "It is better to remain silent and appear a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt."

That "mansion," as you call it, is actually a school in California. No relation to McCain, not owned by McCain, and used by the RNC probably because it shows a typical scene in America.

Does McCain Have Executive Experience?
Of course he does, and I'm not talking about his time in Congress. I'm talking about his time in the Navy. Every Naval Aviator has a job during his career other than his flying job. It may be an administrative job or an executive job. Even junior officers have a "ground job" in things like maintenance shops, scheduling, administrative duties, weapons delivery training, survival training, etc. As a Naval officer, McCain experienced all of these types of jobs and was evaluated periodically through fitness reports throughout his career. After many years of leadership and "executive" evaluation if you perform at a high enough standard you may be assigned to a command position. The most obvious executive job is titled "Executive Officer". That job is the second in command job in a Navy unit. McCain was the Executive Officer of VA-174 in 1975. He was promoted to Commanding Officer of the squadron in July of 1976. The squadron was responsible for training all the replacement pilots and enlisted maintenance personnel who served in the Atlantic Fleet Light Attack Squadrons. It was the largest aviation squadron in the Navy. We're not talking about a few airplanes and pilots sitting next to a shack on an airfield here. This was a job managing hundreds of millions of dollars in hard assets and hundreds of officers and enlisted personnel. Every single pilot flying an attack aircraft in the Atlantic Fleet was trained to specific standards of performance and safety by this squadron. All maintenance personnel were also trained to exacting standards. Commander McCain was in charge of all of these activities and was fully responsible for the results.

Executive experience? Yes, for 22 years in his Navy career. Tell me about the "executive" experience of the other party's ticket. ZERO !
http://eternaledge.blogtownhall.com/

Change at what level?
I believe McCain HAS effectively stolen the "change" banner from Obama. His selection of Palin for VP highlights that. McCain wants not only to change policy in Washington, he wants to change the city itself. I didn't really believe it until last night's speech. McCain put the DC establishment on notice. He's not going to allow Washington elitists to conduct business as usual. Bush allowed that in spades. He didin't care so long as he got policy implemented. I believe McCain/Palin are focused on restoring honor and respect to the process in Washington, not just a new set of policies. They are both qualified to do so. Palin's speech Wednesday got me on board. She sold me on their task. And when McCain spoke last night, he sold me on why THEY need to be in the White House. McCain looked and sounded presidential for the first time I can remember. Listening to him speak, I couldn't help but think, "What if we'd voted for him in 2000. What would have been different?" I have a feeling, a lot would be different. He was absolutely right when he said the Republican Party has lost their way. 2006 was a disaster and the Republicans have no one to blame but theirselves. McCain and Palin aren't going to Washington to get bogged down in the "every man for himself" ideology. They're going there to put Middle America first. That's the impression I got from the Senator last night, and he's got my support.

Charles, Bad Call
Charles, I almost always agree with you. On this one, however, I do not. If anything, the selection of Sarah Palin serves to highlight to an even greater extent Obama's lack of experience. She really is more qualified and more experienced than Obama. Have you noticed how suddenly the focus has turned to Obama versus Palin?

If we are concerned about possible successors to the presidency, why is no one quaking in their boots about the number 3 person in line of succession, Pelosi? Talk about unqualified for anything except maybe babysitting. Sarah Palin's experience is a non-issue. She would make a great commander in chief, and I would sleep soundly with her on watch.

Oback Arama and Executive Experience
I am fed up with you right wing nuts who keep saying that I have no executive experience.

Here is some of my executive experience:

I am the only candidate who has wartime presidential experience. I was President of the Harvard Law Review during the 1991-1992 Gulf War and my opposition to that war brought a quick end to that war when George Bush followed my usual strategy and withdrew the troops. I will use that executive experience to oppose and withdraw things when I become your President.

As an executive community organizer in Chicago, I opposed mid range missiles in Europe, suppported the nuclear freeze, and opposed the Strategic Defense Initiative. My executive opposition to those misguided policies ultimately resulted in the elimination of communism in Eastern Europe and the destruction of the Berlin Wall.

I was the executive chairman of a committee in the Illinois Senate where I courageously opposed and killed a misguided and dangerous bill that would have given children the right to medical care, if accidently born alive during an abortion. This would have been scientifically unsound in that what we are dealing with in this case are simply products of conception. Just because blobs of tissue are breathing, and have a beating heart, is no reason to give them health care. I'm in favor of universal, single payer, free to all healthcare, but you have to draw the line somewhere.

These are just a couple of my executive positions and should be adequate to convince you to vote for me.

I'm Oback Arama and I approved this message.

Krauthammer might be right, but......
Like it or not, I think we conservatives have to hear this. I like Palin; in fact I had hoped he would pick her.

Krauthammer's opinion was not hard to predict, and is unsettling. But we can't choose to hear his opinion only when it is what we want to hear. The man knows Washington and this all really comes down to a question of whether the people are ready truly take this country back or are they just momentarily fired up.

This was a gamble and the ball has no where near settled down in the roulette wheel.

Where I differ with Mr. Krauthammer is how likely McCain was to win if he did NOT gamble. With a bored base and guy who couldn't excite Independents or anybody else screaming Fire! in a theatre, he needed to go out on a limb.

So I hope for the best; that enough people really want to change things. And if this all goes badly; it likely was going to anyway. If people didn’t yet ‘get’ what a lightweight pansy Obama is by now, perhaps they simply did not want to hear or worse, don't care.

Assuming Obama does not completely destroy the country, we have at the minimum have found somebody who stands for very roots of what it means to be a conservative. And maybe that will finally wake up the Republican Party.

Krauthammer’s Myopia.
Mr. Krauthammer,

I am so glad that Governor Palin doesn’t give a fig for what myopic talking heads like you have to say.

This is a rehash of a number of different commentaries I have read here at TH.

Have you been sharing notes, with among others, Steve Chapman?

While you are certainly a very intelligent man, you have proven that you are not a visionary.

The teams are set and there isn’t a darn thing you can do about it.

Now please do us a big favor and get the hell out of our way!

I respectfully disagree with
Dr. Krauthammer. Read Thomas Sowell's article on National Review On line. Here are some talking points:
"No governor ever had foreign-policy experience before becoming president — not Ronald Reagan, not Franklin D. Roosevelt, nor any other governor.
"Senator Joe Biden’s years of service on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is even further removed from foreign-policy experience. He has had a front-row seat as an observer of foreign policy. But Senator Biden has never had any real experience of making foreign policy and taking the consequences of the results."
"Barack Obama’s first response to the Russian invasion of Georgia was to urge “all sides” to negotiate a cease-fire and take their issues to the United Nations. That is standard liberal talk, which even Obama had second thoughts about, after Senator John McCain gave a more grown-up response."

Two Words Charles: Veto Pen.

We’ve gone through six years of filibuster, eight years of obstructionism and a President that seems to have misplaced his Veto Pen. McCain in his nomination address, with good reason, pointedly put Congress on notice; he won’t hesitate to make use of the Veto Pen.

On a separate note. I was somenone that had intended on holding my nose while pulling the lever for McCain. That however, is no longer the case. After hearing about his selection of Palin, I have since contributed to his campaign and plan on volunteering. Palin is a breath of fresh air and IMHO has infused the base in ways no other "more qualified" candidate could. History will record the rest...
