Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- Legacy? What legacy?

There was general amazement when (the now-muzzled) Bill Clinton did his red-faced, attack-dog, race-baiting performance in South Carolina. Friends, Democrats and longtime media sycophants were variously perplexed, repulsed, enraged, mystified and shocked that this beloved ex-president would so jeopardize his legacy by stooping so low.

What they don't understand is that for Clinton, there is no legacy. What he was doing on the low road from Iowa to South Carolina was fighting for a legacy -- a legacy that he knows history has denied him and that he has but one chance to redeem.

Clinton is a narcissist but also smart and analytic enough to distinguish adulation from achievement. Among Democrats, he is popular for twice giving them the White House, something no Democrat has done since FDR. And the bouquets he receives abroad are simply signs of the respect routinely given ex-presidents, though Clinton earns an extra dollop of fawning, with the accompanying fringe benefits, because he is (a) charming and (b) not George W. Bush.

But Clinton knows this is all written on sand. It is the stuff of celebrity. What gnaws at him is the verdict of history. What clearly enraged him more than anything this primary season was Barack Obama's statement that "Ronald Reagan changed the trajectory of America in a way that ... Bill Clinton did not."

The Clintons tried to use this against Obama by charging him with harboring secret Republican sympathies. It was a stupid charge that elicited only scorn. And not just because Obama is no Reaganite, but because Obama's assessment is so obviously true: Reagan was consequential. Clinton was not.

Reagan changed history. At home, he radically altered both the shape and perception of government. Abroad, he changed the entire structure of the international system by bringing down the Soviet empire, giving birth to a unipolar world of unprecedented American dominance.

By comparison, Clinton was a historical parenthesis. He can console himself -- with considerable justification -- that he simply drew the short straw in the chronological lottery: His time just happened to be the 1990s which, through no fault of his own, was the most inconsequential decade of the 20th century. His was the interval between the collapse of the Soviet Union on Dec. 26, 1991, and the return of history with a vengeance on Sept. 11, 2001.

Clinton's decade, that holiday from history, was certainly a time of peace and prosperity -- but a soporific Golden Age that made no great demands on leadership. What, after all, was his greatest crisis? A farcical sexual dalliance.

Clinton no doubt wishes he'd been president on 9/11. It is nearly impossible for a president to rise to greatness in the absence of a great crisis, preferably war. Theodore Roosevelt is the only clear counterexample, and Bill is no Teddy.

What is the legacy of the Clinton presidency? Consolidator of the Reagan revolution. As Dwight Eisenhower made permanent FDR's New Deal and Tony Blair institutionalized Thatcherism, Clinton consolidated Reaganism. He did so most symbolically with his 1996 State of the Union declaration that "the era of big government is over." And more concretely, with a presidency that only tinkered with such structural Reaganite changes as tax cuts and deregulation, and whose major domestic achievement was the abolition of welfare, Reagan's ultimate social bete noire.

These are serious achievements, but of a second order. Obama did little more than echo that truism. But one can imagine how it made Clinton burn. He is, after all, a relatively young man who has decades to brood over his lost opportunity for greatness and yet is constitutionally barred from doing anything about it.

Except for the spousal loophole. Hence his desperation, especially after Hillary's Iowa debacle, to rescue his only chance for historical vindication -- a return to the White House as Hillary's co-president. A chance to serve three, perhaps even four terms, the longest in history, longer even than FDR. The opportunity to have dominated a full quarter-century of American history, relegating the George W. Bush years to a parenthesis within Clinton's legacy.

It was to save this one chance, his last chance, to be historically consequential, that Bill Clinton blithely jeopardized principle, friendships, racial harmony in his own party and his own popularity in South Carolina.

Why not? Clinton knows that popularity is cheap, easily lost, easily regained. (See Lewinsky scandal.) But historical legacies are forever.

He wants one, desperately. But to get it he must return to the White House. And for that he must elect his wife. At any cost.

Why was he out of control in South Carolina? He wasn't. He was clawing for a second chance.

VOTE FOR FRED
Fred Thompson has withdrawn from the race for president. Fred Thompson is still our choice. Fred Thompson, a young attorney working for the justice department, hand picked by Ronald Reagan, helped defend some of our choices to vote for “the Republican,” Richard Nixon. Fred Thompson, as a senior Republican diplomat, left us with a coherent interpretation of our conservative views. Fred Thompson gave us a conservative focus that allowed us to find a new interpretation of ourselves as Republicans. Fred crafted thoughts and opinions into simple effective coherent statements and published those, point by point on his website as a primer to assist in finding our way as a nation. Fred has set an example and laid the groundwork for the next generation Conservative.

Vote your principals, GIVE FRED DELAGATES IN THE CONVENTION, no need to waste the signs, keep them up as a symbol of principal. We now have a responsibility to choose again, as for me, I’m going to vote for Fred if his name is on the ballot.

Sticking to our guns and strength and standing by Fred now costs one vote. The campaign for the White House was about us, not Fred. The campaign for the White House was about who we chose to lead, not the available choices. Give Fred the delegates in the convention to symbolize our conviction to our principals, not for Fred, for us.

The right to choose cost some of our fellow citizens, countrymen and family the ultimate price. Our price for our right to choose based on our principals is one vote.

VOTE FOR FRED…

Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost.

What
amazes me is that Hillary would even want the White House with Bill still around. She must really wear the pants.

As a bad case of the green apple hops!
" ....that this beloved ex-president ..." Clinton? I like him as much as a bad case of the green apple hops! If you do not know what that is, then you probably love Clinton!

Clinton had his chances
Bill Clinton had chances for greatness in Somalia, Bosnia and even in Iraq. If he had taken decisive action in all (or any) of those three events he might have kept 9/11 from ever happening.

Bill Clinton's choice was between being liked and doing something that mattered regardless of popularity. He chose to be liked.

new_ed
You hit it on the button. Pres. Clinton will never be seen as great because he was never decisive when it really counted. He generally took the easy way out.

I don't think that Pres. Bush will ever be relegated to parenthetical status, even if the Clintons win the White House in 2008. Pres. Bush has made more consequential decisions and received more flak for them from all sides than the Clintons ever will, because he does what he thinks is right, not what he thinks will make people like him better.

Bill Clinton's Choice?
"new_ed" writes at 7:56am: "Bill Clinton's choice was between being liked and doing something that mattered regardless of popularity. He chose to be liked."

I disagree. Bill Clinton's choice was being a President or grabbing all the power and money he could. If he had not tried to grab all the power and money he could, if he had tried to be a President, he would have a wonderful legacy. He would be remembered by history as being the leader of the most powerful country in the world during a time of peace and prosperity.

Instead he will be remembered by history as a power-grabbing, sex-crazied pervert. In a 1000 years, he will be compared to some of the Roman Emperors like Nero and Caligula.

Bill is and always will be a little boy
Bill Clintin is and always will be a little boy.
Charles is right on in this article. He was playing President instead of Being President. Now he is having to face that reality. And it must gall him to have to run behind Hillary's skirttails to get attention. Good ridance to both of them.

Bill ought to go the way of Gore
In the absence of having lasting meaning in history- a legacy- from his role as president, Bill ought to apply what celebrity he has to milk another avenue. Al Gore considered human nature, appealed to feeings and fear, and created a legacy for himself in the world of environmemtalism. While man-made global warming is a hoax, it doesn't matter. Al has a high profile, irrevocable place in history. Al went from being spent, fat, scraggly, and irrelevant to a Nobel Peace Prize winner using only puppets, smoke, and mirrors. Bill needs to take a lesson, but that is impossible for a narcissist.

Bill still reminds me of Senator Palpatine, the evil emperor from Star Wars: wheezy, haggard, shallow, cutting, clever, and malevolent.

BC
even had Binladin caught (and released him)

Oldsocialworker: Why wouldn't you call
what Bill did for blue dresses and cigars a legacy?

legacy?
It's funny. I have to continually fight my own pride and selfishness for my legacy's sake ( our 5 children). Yet, Clinton clings to his childish narcissism and his legacy crumbles like a sand castle.

Charles is partly right.
Some of Bill Clinton's boorish behavior is frustration at being (properly) relegated to irrelevance. But mostly it's just his own true self. His organization has always fought viciously and ruthlessly whenever he has been cornered or down. They destroy other people's lives before breakfast (Billy Dale, Kathleen Willey, Linda Tripp, etc., etc.) and don't bat an eye.

Democrats are shocked -- shocked! -- to see such behavior, but they rationalized or excused it away when it was directed at their common enemies. Now that Billy is focusing his scorched earth style on the Democrat's new JFK-wannabe, they finally see what kind of person he is and always has been.

But they will forgive and forget come the fall when Bill drags out all McCain's dirt.

You're right, elko.mike
I didn't think about that. I still look before I touch when it comes to dealing with blue dresses, and Bill Clinton can be thanked for that! He's just nasty. I do not understand women who find him handsome.

To elko.mike
About ten years ago in the train station in Zurich, Switzerland I saw a big wall of ads for some airline. It had a poster for each of half a dozen cities they fly to and beside each city's name was a picture of something that city is known for. Beside "Paris", the Eiffel Tower. Beside "London", Big Ben. Beside "Los Angeles", a roll of film. Beside "Washington DC", a cigar.

Bill Clinton's "Legacy"
There are at least two types of Presidents. One type is motivated by the desire to get certain things done; get them accomplished for the good of the nation. That was pretty much Ronald Reagan. Unfortunately, the other type of President is an individual who wants to be somebody. This person wants the pomp, privileges, power, adulation, etc. If this isn't a description of Bill Clinton, then I don't know what is. So it is that his "legacy" will be an old mattress, a red light, and a cash register.

Clinton Agonistes
Charles, as usual, has insightfully pinned the tail on the donkey. Clinton may not have been the worst president, but he is surely the worst person ever to have been president. (Quiz: who is the worst person ever to have been first lady? Ans.: Unanimity is rare in American politics.)

Clinton is the American version of the dictators referred to in the press as "kleptocrats" - men such as Zaire's Mobutu who used their office to loot their country. Clinton was a moral kleptocrat who degraded the adulthood of every person in the entire country.

Consequently, though it is inadequate recompense for dragging the country along in his slime trail, it is delicious to contemplate the Clinton's recognition of the Shakespearean in Charles' thesis.

In "Amadeus" as Salieri ages, he is aware that his music is fading from public consciousness, as Mozart's is being regarded as, well, Mozart's. But Salieri is also aware of his comparatively modest musical gifts - he wanted Mozart's talent to properly glorify God, but is apostatically enraged when he recognizes God has favored Mozart. Unlike Salieri, Clinton undoubtedly thinks he has political talent greater than Reagan's - which must only amplify his torment. Good.

Perhaps Clinton can console himself in the glories of his epic adulteries, but even then he suffers in historical comparison: Monica may have her allurements, but she is no Marilyn Monroe, and by his own admission, the sex wasn't memorable.

RIght on
Thanks you Dr Krauthmamer for yet another brillaint insight into the presidential election. I am one of the many real republicans depressed, angry, dispirited (choose the adjective) at the thought of McCain heading our ticket.

I'm in good company and pray that 1) McCain loses on Tuesday (unlikely), 2) Romeny wins enough on Tuesday to remain relevant up to the convention and at least force McCain to define himself in a true conservative mold (possible) or 3) picks Romney or an other passionate conservative (obvisouly NOT Huckster) as VP (hope burning strong).

Whatever the rises and falls of the above 3 points you have finally given me a reason to get behind the "republican" even if it is McCain. We must defeat Hillary not to prevent Hillary from ruining the country, but to prevent Bill from ruining history.

EXACTLY
Dr. Krauthammer, this is your finest column in recent memory. Incisive. Insightful. Revealing. Rings of truth like bells in cathedrals across the country.

Also, XiangXiang, you hit it on the head too. I may agree with every anti-McCain person out there but my passion to deny the pres to the Clintons supercedes all.

Clinton's Legacy
This from a speech Bill Clinton gave Wednesday, Jan 30 in Colorado,

"We just have to slow down our economy and cut back our greenhouse gas emissions 'cause we have to save the planet for our grandchildren."

It seems he is following the Gore model. We need a long term recession and for lots of people to be put out of work for the grandchildren. All based on junk science. Careful Bill, that house of cards built on sand may not stand up well historically. I will still vote for you in November though if McCain is the republican nominee. I do not want to see the republican party blamed for the demise of this great nation for doing the same crap the democrats do. There is a clear moral difference between the communist and capitalist agenda. If the republican party is going to continue moving to the left, I will no longer support it and will instead support the real communist party in order to hasten the day when the electorate wakes up and smells the coffee.

Boy, if the right didn't have...
a favorite whipping boy like Clinton they would actually have to talk about their party going up in flames. Can anyone say Whig? ROTFLMAO

Differences between McCain and Clinton
After the most recent debate, I see none. Juan McCain proved himself a liar. He exhibited the same trait I detest in Clinton, namely that he knows best and us peasants should bow down before him. I was outraged at his condescending attitude and smirks as well as his outright lies. I cannot support this man. Two days ago, I was resigned to holding my nose and voting for him in November. I can no longer do so.

Clinton is not going to immediately withdraw from Iraq. She is simply pandering to the base. She will stay the course in Iraq, let the generals do their job and move the country two clicks to the left politically. McCain will do the same thing minus one click. The best hope for the conservative movement is more communism since too many republicans are now socialists. Only by confronting the reality of true communism under Hillary will they perhaps see the light. If not, we are doomed either way.

Ron... inhaling the party smoke ....

Robert
I do not always agree with Ann but, she is correct. HRC wears her totalitarian wishes on her sleeve and is upfront with us about her desire to return the planet to the pristine state it was in before nasty humans came along.

McCain believes the same thing but, claims his time spent in Hanoi will make it more palatable to the population.

Both of them, having spent most of their lives in Washington have developed the dreaded I am right and everyone is wrong mentality common to tyrants.

I am not laughing about this state of affairs, however.

Hitchhiker...As someone who usually...
Always agrees with the wonderful Anne...
I agree with your point about Washington Mind washing. also have you heard that Bill Clinton has come out advocating recession in the USA as a way of ameliorating global warming!

I hope that little slip up gets lots of air time :)

Agree with Xiangxiang and The Fab Timbo
Being a registered democrat, I am totally sick of the Clinton "entitlement" attitude. Hill is so condescending and Bill is desperate. The sad part of this whole affectation is that the both of Clintons have the idea that WE, the voters, can't see the sham. Dr. Krauthammer has once again exposed the reality of the situation! I personally think the Kennedy endorsement and Left saying that Obama is the supreme socialist [my words] is a facade to make Hillary look centered to hide her socialistic plans for education and medical platforms. Being a veteran, I personally admire MCcain; don't always agree with his policies, but like the idea he stands by his convictions. I never thought voting would be so difficult, for the first time in my voting life, I struggle. Thank God for the Krauthammers who can discern reality!!!

Ron
I pointedly used the word always since I usually agree with her also. Did you miss my earlier post about Bill's recent speech? I am sure it will get plenty of air time on McCain ads between the convention and November. I doubt if any MSM outlet cares. They agree with him. It is not over yet, but the washington establishment and the MSM have chosen and they usually get their way. Will we see a revolt against McCain ala the immigration fiasco? No, the alternative is a Mormon and that will keep enough evangelicals on the McCain ticket.

I still want to see some discussion of Guiliani. Did he plan to give up at the beginning and endorse McCain? Did they have a deal from the beginning? How can a guy who polled as the front runner earlier give up after one primary state and not even bother to campaign in the earlier ones? Very strange. Very smelly.

Hitchhiker ...I am seldom prone to ...
Conspiracy theories...
But I totally agree with you and have the same questions.

It is just too strange and it continues to be! :)

Robert
writes, "I am so tired of the radio right, the childish creeps who cant win elections anymore but are curlish and loud in their loss...They are losers."

I don't listen to them but, I agree with them most of the time. Yes, you are correct. It appears we have lost again. With your side winning since 1992, how then to explain all the dissatisfaction in the country? We want change. We want change. What they really mean is, We want more presents Santa, We want more presents Santa. History is on your side. That does not make it right. I perfectly understand how so many people simply want more stuff and don't care if they have to borrow from future generations to get it. It still does not make it right. If McCain is crowned republican nominee, the public will get exactly what they want and deserve.

Robert
Bush Derangement Syndrome has been explained by many as the result of one political party simply opposing the other for no other reason than that they think that is their job.

I have another explanation. Bush is sending all our presents to Iraq and Afghanistan, stop him.

Another Brilliant Piece From Krauthammer
I put Krauthammer in the same league with Thomas Sowell. Consistantly brilliant.

Is he being too kind to Clinton? Isn't Clinton sociopathic in addition to being narcissistic?

Is it too early for predictions?
2009: HRC or OHB is CIC (Claus in chief)

All is now right in the world. We negotiate with those who want to kill us. Through the power of other people's money, bulldozers and backhoes will be employed to make the hole we are in as deep as possible. A gay interior designer will be employed to make the hole pretty with some nice drapes and furniture.

Juan McCain is CIC

We kill those who want to kill us. We employ illegal immigrants to dig the hole so it will not be quite as deep. He hands out presents to all the good boys and girls who helped elect him and is puzzled when they still hate him. When he leaves office he is still puzzled about this. Nobody told him that everybody knows Santa Claus has a D after his name not an R.

The radical radio folks and their followers still stand on principles and say, I told you so. We have another election to decide who will be Santa Claus for the next four years.

Btw, in a previous post, I implied that the liberals (in both partys) have been winning since 1992. It should have been 1988. I did not mean to imply Bush Sr. was a conservative.

Shock for the sake of shock.
____The legacy, and driving force of the left. While the Clinton's, and Carters, of the world will never have a proud legacy to draw on, they will always have the shock factor enabling the creation of legacies. For, following in their footsteps, have always been responsible leaders, who guide a nation through times of turbulance, with a working nation. A republic facing, and overcoming, the turbulent situations embraced by the left according to there shock value, and the personal gain, to be had, concerning the shocking situation. The left mind is in awe of shock, and will run to its call like an arsonist, who sets a fire for the sake of its destruction. The arsonist, who enters the seen like a hero, to save a life, or to be a part of the real heros saving the structure. We see their groupies all the time on the MSM broadcast, or read their rantings in the daily MSM propaganda. If you want, you can even go to some of their sites on the web, and watch their kids playing with matches. Excited little arsonist setting their own little blaze to see how big the fire can grow before those of legacy put it out.

kapahulu,
The terms sociopath & narcissist are simply euphemisms for psychopath. Psychiatrists just keep coming up with new ones because they have neither the guts nor the integrity their clients that their beloved bratlings have been spoiled to the point of becoming monsters.

Rotten to the core
The National Republican Congressional Committee said Friday that it has contacted the FBI about possible financial improprieties at the committee. Without providing details, the NRCC released a statement from Chairman Tom Cole (Okla.) that said:

"As part of our ongoing efforts to institute and strengthen financial controls at the National Republican Congressional Committee, we learned earlier this week of irregularities in our financial audit process. Since these irregularities may include fraud, we have notified the appropriate law enforcement authorities. We are aggressively and thoroughly investigating the matter and, while we determine the details, we have terminated our relationship with a former employee who was engaged as an outside vendor." 'nuf ced

But its sure looking that way

Even Ann Coulter is gonna bolt the party, you gotta figure the smoke is starting to get to her. ROTFLMAO

Insightful and incisive, as always
Superb writing and analysis, as always from Mr. Krauthammer.

Some excellent comments from others as well, particularly "Al":
"Clinton may not have been the worst president, but he is surely the worst person ever to have been president."
and "Hitchhiker":
"Juan McCain proved himself a liar. He exhibited the same trait I detest in Clinton, ... Two days ago, I was resigned to holding my nose and voting for him in November. I can no longer do so."

My only quibble would Krauthammer's:
"[Clinton's] major domestic achievement was the abolition of welfare"

I didn't realized welfare had been abolished.

thanks Wolfie
Ya, I didn't get the memo on that either. I did hear it was toned down somewhat.

I have written more on my decision not to vote for McCain if nominated on a couple other columns today. I am really disgusted right now. I understand Ann Coulter's frustration. She can lash out when she's mad can't she? I still agree with her.

if only Clinton had...
pursued Soc Sec reform - he'd have a decent legacy. He ignored the advice of his own blue ribbon commission for one reason - democrats wanted the issue more than a solution.

The legacy of Clinton
is that of being the President with the least character and honesty in our nation's history.

Sword of Light
"because he does what he thinks is right, not what he thinks will make people like him better."

Well, I am glad to put in that word "THINKS" is
right.

Voting with Ann
Ann is right, if we support McCain and he wins, we get the same government we would have gotten with Shillary, but the RINO's would have the blame. If we elect Shillary we get the real deal and the Demorats can take the fall.

Jimmy Carter gave us Regan.

Two more days until...
I get to vote for Ron Paul. Why 'yellow dog' the primaries? Vote your first choice candidate; NOT who 'they' say has the only chance to beat the other party's nominee. That is the only way that either party stands a decent chance of getting quality Presidential candidates. If either McCain or Hillary gets elected, they would make expensive Presidents. Ron Paul would be a more economical & sensible minded President. I want a President who could leave the country in better financial shape than the big spenders who can't figure their way out of Iraq. They don't care how deep an economic hole they are burying us in so long as troops are left Iraq indefinately for whatever twisted agenda there is for remaining there.

Krauthammer The Ungrateful
Dear Mr. Krauthammer:

Beats me why you keep beating up on Bill Clinton when you should be grateful.

Remember, if it weren't for Bubba's insane involvement with Monica Lewinsky, George W. Bush would probably be clearing brush in Crawford, Texas rather than spreading his good will in Iraq and environs.

Speaking of which, how come you're not upset that Pres. Bush, before he took us to war in 2003, promised to "plan carefully" and then use the "full might" of our military to gain swift victory in Iraq?

Why doesn't it bother you that had Pres. Bush kept his pledges in 2003, the "surge" would not have been necessary in 2007 and at least one thousand of our brave military might still be with us?

Summation: What Clinton did to Monica Pres. Bush and his team have done to the country.

DaveF

Re: Krauthammer the Ungrateful

"Remember, if it weren't for Bubba's insane involvement with Monica Lewinsky..."

...his unbelievably corrupt actions would not have been overlooked.

Ironically, the magnitude of the Lewinsky story pushed his corruption to the back and probably saved him from being removed from office for LYING under oath.

Hopeful
If (gag) Hillary is President I look forward to her filing for divorce the day after the election is confirmed.
A woman scorned...(wicked laugh)

For Big 10BB:
"Ironically, the magnitude of the Lewinsky story pushed his corruption to the back and probably saved him (Bill Clinton) from being removed from office for LYING under oath."

ANY President who lies to the people, under oath or not, should be liable for removal from office. That means Bill Clinton and his successor, Pres. Bush, who promised to "plan carefully" before taking us to war in Iraq and who promised to utilize the "full might" of our military when the war began. Pres. Bush failed to honor both those promises, resulting in untold casualties for our brave military in a never-ending war which is sapping the resources and resolve of our country.

As Rich Lowry, Town Hall columnist and National Review editor has written: "A vigorous blame game is still the only way to keep government failures from being conveniently ignored."

Clinton was Dangerous
It is so nice to hear someone else call Clinton a narcissist. I have always contended this not just off-handledly...but clinically.

When 9/11 happened he was simply upset it had not happened when he was in office. I'm sure it drove him crazy.

He thought he was truly getting the chance to get back into office. He even publicly said, "When I'm back in office."

He was dangerous. His narcissistic behavior put our country in jeopardy DAILY. What a nightmare he was.
