Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- When the Democratic presidential candidates pause from beating Hillary with a stick, they join in unison to pronounce the Democratic pieties, chief among which is that George Bush has left our alliances in ruins. As Clinton puts it, we have "alienated our friends," must "rebuild our alliances" and "restore our standing in the world." That's mild. The others describe Bush as having a scorched-earth foreign policy that has left us reviled and isolated in the world.

Like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, who insist that nothing of significance has changed in Iraq, the Democrats are living in what Bob Woodward would call a state of denial. Do they not notice anything?

France has a new president who is breaking not just with the anti-Americanism of the Chirac era but with 50 years of Fifth Republic orthodoxy that defined French greatness as operating in counterpoise to America. Nicolas Sarkozy's trip last week to the United States was marked by a highly successful White House visit and a rousing speech to Congress in which he not only called America "the greatest nation in the world" (how many leaders of any country say that about another?) but pledged solidarity with the U.S. on Afghanistan, Iran, Lebanon, the Middle East and nuclear nonproliferation. This just a few months after he sent his foreign minister to Iraq to signal an openness to cooperation and an end to Chirac's reflexive obstructionism.

That's France. In Germany, Gerhard Schroeder is long gone, voted out of office and into a cozy retirement as Putin's concubine at Gazprom. His successor is the decidedly pro-American Angela Merkel, who concluded an unusually warm visit with Bush this week.

All this, beyond the ken of Democrats, is duly noted by new British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, who in an interview with Sky News on Sunday noted "the great change that is taking place," namely "that France and Germany and the European Union are also moving more closely with America."

As for our other traditional alliances, relations with Australia are very close, and Canada has shown remarkable steadfastness in taking disproportionate casualties in supporting the NATO mission in Afghanistan. Eastern European nations, traditionally friendly, are taking considerable risks on behalf of their U.S. alliance -- for example, cooperating with us on missile defense in the face of enormous Russian pressure. And ties with Japan have never been stronger, with Tokyo increasingly undertaking military and quasi-military obligations that it had forsworn for the last half-century.

So much for the disarray of our alliances.

The critics will say that all this is simply attributable to the rise of Russia and China causing old allies to turn back to us out of need.

So? I would even add that the looming prospect of a nuclear Iran has caused Arab states -- Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, the Gulf states, even Libya -- to rally to us. All true. And it makes the point that the Bush critics have missed for years -- that the strength of alliances is heavily dependent on the objective balance of international forces, and has very little to do with the syntax of the U.S. president or the disdain in which he might be held by a country's cultural elites.

It's classic balance-of-power theory: Weaker nations turn to the great outside power to help them balance a rising regional threat. Allies are not sentimental about their associations. It is not a matter of affection, but of need -- and of the great power's ability to deliver.

What's changed in the last year? Bush's dress and diction remain the same. But he did change generals -- and counterinsurgency strategy -- in Iraq. As a result, Iraq has gone from an apparently lost cause to a winnable one.

The rise of external threats to our allies has concentrated their minds on the need for the American connection. The revival of American fortunes in Iraq -- and the diminished prospect of an American rout -- have significantly increased the value of such a connection. This is particularly true among our moderate Arab allies who see us as their ultimate protection against an Iran-Syria-Hezbollah-Hamas axis that openly threatens them all.

It's always uncomfortable for a small power to rely on a hegemon. But a hegemon on the run is even worse. Alliances are always shifting. But one thing we can say with certainty: The event that will have more effect than any other on the strength of our alliances worldwide is not another Karen Hughes outreach to the Muslim world, not an ostentatious embrace of Kyoto, or even the most abject embrace of internationalism from the podium of the UN. It is success or failure in Iraq.

So the "cowboy diplomacy" does work
Another great article Dr. Krauthammer! You da' man! Thanks!

I always thought when Clinton said: "we have "alienated our friends," must "rebuild our alliances" and "restore our standing in the world."" she was talking about what a joke America became under her husband, Bill's, diplomacy during his Presidency! :-)

By the way
Pardon the typos; but I make no apology for a complete lack of respect for the NeoCon punditry.

Let me tell you something slice, I served active duty reserve Marine Officer from '82-'03, spent a year and a half of my life overseas and don't owe you squat.

If you expect your troops to hazard everything they hold dear at your behest, then as commander in chief you ought to put the sovereignty of this nation and the welfare of its citizenry at the top of your priority list, without equivocation. If you can't figure that out, then you ought to resign in shame.

I am conservative as the day is long and then some, but I am most assuredly not drinking the Kool Aid.

We are broke flat out. The Chinese own enough of our debt to twist until we scream and what are we going to do about it? Our childrens' futures are already mortgaged. Strategically this nation is in pretty poor shape, meaning we are as vulnerable as we ever have been, and we have done it to ourselves. Robert McNamara has absolutely nothing on Donald Rumsfeld. (Don't pay for the same piece of real estate twice.) And that ain't me speaking its men who wore the stars. Anthony Zinni was and is a Marine's Marine and has been pretty outspoken on all of this. For such he and other warriors were taken to task by the aforementioned NeoCon P.ants and feckless politicians.

What I am saying is that it is time for the cheerleaders to put done the pom poms and don some kevlar. Our intrepid troops have performed magnificantly and are worthy of every and any accolade we can give them.

Still, a Cobra Pilot voiced his concern a few months back about the lack of meaningful training and the the time away from home. War without end, Amen, Amen, the NeoCon theme song ain't getting it. Mission accomplished, remember?

I know my hymn Bubba and I earned a title no one will take from me: United States Marine.

An equal and opposite reaction!

"All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing". Edmund Burke

This explains the formula, "Every action has an equal and opposite reaction."

For the leftists to have their brand of evil spread, they need the U.S. to withdraw. For them to succeed they need us to fail. For their lies to be the truth, our truth must be lies.

"Honest men may disagree..." Thomas Paine Common Sense.

There is no disagreement with the dishonest.

A few basic truths
... about national security.

1. You don't have allies because you need them. You have allies because they need you.

2. You don't win wars and maintain national security by being prepared to die, heroic as that is. You maintain it by being prepared to kill. Dying is not EFFECTIVE. Killing is.

3. Being ready to die is not a good reason to start or join a war. You should only go to war over what you are prepared to kill for.

4. The less you are perceived, by other nations, to be prepared to kill, the more you will have to.

Bot-feeders delusions
No one would have said the old Soviet Union wasn't a super-power. Yet their economy was never more than one fourth of the US economy, and that is presently a Russian admission.

What makes a country a super-power is its massivemilitary wherewithal and its willingness to use it in defense of itself and\or its allies.

Ron Paul Endorsed by Barry Goldwater, Jr

RP-Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul today gained a public endorsement from Barry M. Goldwater, Jr.

“America is at a crossroads,” said Mr. Goldwater. “We have begun to stray from our traditions and must get back to what has made us the greatest nation on earth or we will lose much of the freedom we hold dear. Ron Paul stands above all of the other candidates in his commitment to liberty and to America.”

“Leading America is difficult, and I know Ron Paul is the man for the job,” he added.

Alienated friends?...Our alliances were never in tatters. Our allies KNOW they need us far more than we need them.

Consider the percentage of our allies economies that would be required to be spent to match us dollar for dollar on military spending. Then pick one that would have a military the exact same size as ours because the leftists would allow that money to be spent.

Consider the countries that have no real power in the world if they are not standing at our side. The pick the one that has a mature enough political structure to handle that position in world affairs.

I think the answer is "none". I think that if you can you do, if you can't you teach and if you can do neither you complain.

Alienated friends?????
"As Clinton puts it, we have "alienated our friends," must "rebuild our alliances" and "restore our standing in the world." That's mild. The others describe Bush as having a scorched-earth foreign policy that has left us reviled and isolated in the world."

The problem with our Evil Leftists is they believe the propaganda of Europe's Evil Leftists.

C'mon Dems. Try a little harder to understand how much sheer, raw firepower America has. NOt to mention airlift capability, communications and reconnaissance supremacy, and strategic and tactical expertise. When we go to war, we include other nations as allies as a courtesy.

Our alliances were never in tatters. Our allies KNOW they need us far more than we need them.

SteveL
We pretty much use Germany as a transit station for our Air Force. Think about how often Ramstein is in the news and why. Most of the rest of our forces were withdrawn years ago. As such, Germany is still useful to us.

Foreigners are showing more good sense..
...then Democrats. They're far more scared of terrorists and tyrants than of the United States of America. With Democrats, it's the reverse.

And foreigners fear the withdrawal of America much more than its purported hegemony over the world.

Most Americans KNOW that America is the good guy in the tough neighborhood better known as international relations.

Will Dems get the message in time for '08? The Magic Eight Ball says the answer is hazy.

From the halls of Montazuma to the shores of Tripoli. Somebody had better listen to their own hymn. If you imagine that our children will have to pay off the debt, then we must have won the war. If we lose, then it will be wholly irrelevant what the debt is. If you had any sense then you would know the key to the issue is, "stop spending".

If you want to stop spending, stop on the things you have no right spend on in the first place.

If you are against the war, want demonicRATs to run the country or just want to display your convenient, self serving rationalization, you are hopeless.

The "misled" factor

Now when someone asks why you did what you did and you have run out of good excuses you will have good practice at telling the truth. The leftists need practice.

Every cheese eating.......

Tonto: What do you me "we", pale face.

What ever the demonicRATs mean when they say "we", I'm not included. I have been in a lot of countries that love America, hate leftists and will be our allies until the leftists take over.

So we lose England and Gain France, big deal. Analyst are scared we are entering another cold war with Russia and China walks all over us.

Asked in an interview with The New Statesman magazine if the atmosphere between the two men was "testy", Sir David replied: "It's not as close yet [as relations were with Tony Blair]. Personal relations of that kind don't develop in the same way but you'll find a regular pattern of consultations. Life dictates they'll have to get close."

Sir David, who leaves in the autumn, made it clear however that personal closeness did not always guarantee openness and clarity from the Americans.

He told the magazine that Mr Blair never wanted to "go by the military route" in Iraq and was misled by Washington about its plans to rebuild the country after the invasion.

Sir David, who was the former Prime Minister's foreign policy adviser in the run-up to the war, said he was convinced that Mr Blair genuinely believed there was a diplomatic way out of the stand-off with Saddam Hussein.

Now
If we could get the Neocons and their progeny to enlist or obtain commissions and fill the ranks of our military. That would be the ticket.

The dollar is soaring on world currency markets. Public and private debt is at historic low levels in the U.S. Most importantly, nations who would mean us harm, hold virtually none of our insignificant debt.

Our sense of ourselves, our national unity is impregnable. Our citizenry lives secure in the knowledge that our national executive has no higher goal than perpetuating the sovereignty of this country and securing the blessings of liberty for our people.

Rolling along into year seven, invade the world, invite the world, be in debt to the world is working splendidly. Bravo Zulu.

True, for 1929 historically, but the stock market has been a harbinger otherwise. It started coming back 6 mons. before GNP figures supported an end to the 70s recession in 1983.

Black Monday of JFK's administration also predicted an ec. slump, which Kennedy responded to by cutting taxes.

The "crash" of 1987 pre-dated the real crash in that decade's real estate market.

Today's Real estate and housing financials have been in trouble since the summer, yet the current stock market has not taken a real hit. My point is that the US ec. is still more robust than the doom sayers predict.

I think it must be terrible to be the Dem. Party and pray for military humiliation and ec. disaster for elections.

1929
The market that year was stabbed in the a*s by Hoover when he announced he would sign Smoot-Hawley. Over the next four years the Federal Reserve presided over the disappearance of one third of the money in America. Government at work for us. They are doing it again only this time it is going to be through bankruptcy as a result of entitlements.

Part of the fallout from the last go round was WWII. Wonder what it will be this time?

Renny's Stock Market
I don't disagree with EVRYTHING you wrote, but I must point out that the U.S. stock market of 1929 had been built up for years on credit, fraud, and over-production of durable goods. It has little in common with the market of today.

Dr. Krauthammer
Gerhard Schroeder as Putin's concubine???

That's the best line, EVER!!!!!

After all the anti-American sentiment I dealt with while stationed in Wuerzburg, I'm glad to see the slow thawing going on over in Germany. My friend was of the opinion that Germans were shooting themselves in the leg when they yelled for the 1st ID to leave. She now tells me the economy in the area has tanked, and people don't want the rest of the drawing down to go on. Money makes the world go round, as does nuclear strike capability.

I too was with the 1st Infantry in 1954-1995; also stationed in Wurzburg. We weren't too beloved then, but the Germans sure like the money that the GI's spent. It never changes.

Krauthammers article is right on! I personally believe (strongly) that history will vindicate President Bush; just as it has for Truman and Lincoln. I was there when Truman was reviled; he has been recognized for his role in stemming the RED TIDE! (Not to be confused with the BIG RED ONE.)

Most Americans do not know the anger and hatred shown agains Lincoln; even by some of his Traitorous generals. It would enlighten most of the American people to study the life of Lincoln.

God Bless America; land that I love!

Finish
GNP is still running 3-4% which is better than average, even though predictions keep being made that the ec. will slow down.

Inflation is low and the feds just cut the interest rate again. Exports are high, and taxation has brought in more money than ever in this year, but now that Congress is adding another trillion to the budget, pressure is being applied to the high tax payments.

iEc. is not down the tubes
but in danger.

During the Carter economy oil was over $30 a barrel, considered a horror then. And gas prices doubled. Today oil is c. $100 a barrel and in some places gas is c $4. A danger zone.

Inflation was double digit under Carter (the 18% credit card was invented) partly because deals had been made with Europe and the then USSR to sell tons of wheat and corn. Prices at the supermarkets soared. Today, ethanol production is artificially inflating corn and food prices.

Recession of 7% unemployment nationally and 10% in places like NJ plagued the Carter admin. Today we have a crash in housing and mortgage-loan debacle that is resulting in major layoffs in the building industry and pressure on surviving among some financial institutions.

If someone is elected who lets the Bush tax cuts lapse (worth $2500 to a family of 4 earning $60,000) and engineers much greater taxation that puts a damper on the economy, another recession could occur. The busines cycle tends to rise in mid-decade and fall at the ends of decades.

But currently, the stock market of 14,000 is still booming, and in 1929, it was a major indicator of the Great Depression to come. Carter's stock market never hit 1000.

Employment is still under 5% (considered "full employment"), at 4.7%, and the ec. is making c. 150,000 jobs a month in those industries that Labor monitors--it doesn't usually publish records on businesses under 50 employees or self employed occupations.

Despite the housing problems. 70% of Americans own their own homes and that percent won't change even with large numbers of defaults.

I heard some of Sarkozy's speech
It was awesome! I don't think Columbia University is going to invite him to speak anytime soon.

Now that some European leadership recognizes that socialism leads to scarcity of resources and shared mediocirity and sees Islamic terrorists for what they are- a threat to the western way of life; I wonder who those determined to undermine the west will choose to exalt romanticize about?

Yes, and what happens when we are no longer a great power, which will be the case in short order thanks to our economic system that is based on the notion that you can print money up the yin yang to finance unlimited consumption without having to produce anything except some paper with pictures of ex-presidents on it.

economy going down tubes

too many words to post. just check the article at financialsense.com

(Peter Schiff's article of 16 November)

no economy no superpower

The notion of "America coming back" is an appealing one, but a pipedream.

Our economy is headed down the toilet, and when the United States becomes a 3rd rate economy, we will no longer be a first rate military power.

You cannot be a military superpower without being an economic superpower.

I just read this piece by Peter Schiff about the economy and in my view it is a brilliant assessment of why our economy is headed down the tubes.

By the way DO NOT SHOOT THE MESSENGER.

I do not want the economy to go down the drain. But I believe the facts say that it will. You can't turn a weak country into a strong one by waving your flag harder.

The libs. have been reading their own

If not for us, today France would be Germany. As I have friends and relatives in the Fatherland, I know many people never agreed with the cold shoulder to America.

America is it. Those that never studied Rome or the British Empire live in LA-La Land where their lives and freedoms are always protected and they have to do nothing to preserve those circumstances.

The truth is the Greek philosopher Heraclites said, "The worst that can possibly happen can happen to you." The white flag wavers some day will have to decide what is more important: spouting endless and useless bilge at their perceived enemies in America and the West or would they rather live under real tyranny, where people can't just blog at whim, where you carry passes everywhere go and have to show them to gun-toting militias?

The world's civilizations are not carved in stone. Someday, the US will not be the global economic power and military power of today. Where will the haters turn then? What beliefs and practices will their anger support when Western freedoms are history?

Coventional wisdom is just that. Bush has tossed conventional wisdom on its head as the country is now divided on the issue of who is best suited on issues of national security. Iraq may or may not have some national security value downstream, who knows? We may feel good at some point in the future for kicking the dictator out - but as far as having any great impact on our own national security, it may be two years, or five or ten before we know the answer to that one. It's fallen into the same hole Korea fell into. Once Clark retook the peninsula, the public wanted it resolved. The majority then and now lack enthusiam for these long and expensive third wold wars.

Democrats
Conventional wisdom is that you look to Democrats for social programs and environmental programs and you look to Republicans for a strong economy, a strong showing in U.S. interests abroad, and a strong military. What amazes me is how Democrats can, on one hand do everything they can to sabotage the U.S. military and American interests abroad (in order to give a defeat to the Republicans), but never come to an understanding of WHY Americans don't trust them with national defense.

The Dems felt entitled
To win the presidency the last two times, and they will never forgive George Bush for not allowing that to happen. I doubt they ever do. They seem willing to destroy the country to get their own way.

Charles Krauthammer
Another great column. Clear, insightful, reasoned, and informed. Thanks for putting things into perspective!

You ROCK!

BDS
Reid and Pelosi have such a severe case of BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome) that they would allow the entire country to go down the flusher as long as they could blame it on George W. Bush.

BDS
Reid and Pelosi have such a severe case of BDS (Bush Derangement Syndrome) that they would allow the entire country to go down the flusher as long as they could blame it on George W. Bush.

Fact
Historically the Democrats have been in favor of development of weapon systems but they oppose fielding of systems. Under the Democrats programs have consistently been cancelled after several billion dollars were spent developing them. In recent years the Republicans have not done much better. This is the old "Guns and Butter" argument. The use of that comparison needs to be permanently changed to "Guns and Socialism" or better yet "Guns and Constitution Bastardizations". There is no room in our Constitution for Socialism--there never has been. Maybe the 1st Amendment should have read: " Congress shall make no law or take any action to stop a citizen from voting money out of the pocket of other citizens for the purpose of converting it to his own use". That WOULD put Socialism in our Constitution. BTW how have you enjoyed paying motel and cruise ship stateroom rental fees for those folks displaced by Katrina? Out of your pocket into theirs and no one even stroked you.

Union Dude
Excellent Question.

And what would an increased army have done for us under a Kerry presidency anyways? Besides sitting at home, of course.

Back to Basics
The voters of France gave us Sarkozy. Perhaps we should thank them directly - as his election had nothing to do with US policy, given those same voters remain opposed to our actions in Iraq. We have the same conditions in Germany. This rapproachment, as it were, has been fueled by a complete make-over of the Bush Foreign policy team, and of his reversion to the practices of his predecessors. The doctrine of pre-emption has evaporated, and the doctrine of spreading democracy in the belly of a tank has gone along with it. The world never left us - we simply left the world. Now were back to the way it was - not the way Bush originally intended it to be. What he discovered was that he could not defeat terrorism alone, and that nation building in third world countries is expensive, uncertain, and rarely generates the results one would like. This was the conservative position on foreign policy prior to Bush's ascendence. Stay out of nation building. Bush had no choice but to go back to basics.

When the whole world can see success.?.?
Are Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid on the take from some Terrorist organization? Or is it that they hate the military and freedom so much that they will sacrifice anything to get their way. This is past the point of normal disagreement on any sane level. They are into some type of mental disorder, or they have joined the enemy and are now themselves terrorists with a small (t). It is beyond the point of fantasy to not see and accept the success we are having in Iraq. Why else do they want to surrender to the enemy? Is somebody paying them to be so obtuse? Does it require a psychological examination to be a Congress or Senate Person? My gosh, we require it of a person becoming a police officer, if we don’t now require it, perhaps it is time to start a mandatory Psychological Examination of these elected positions and people! I expect that we will witness Pelosi and Reid crying as they jump up and down yelling "I want my way because I hate George Bush so surrender to the enemy?"

Arrest This Man!
How dare you accuse W of competence! Dont you watch the Daily Show? Werent you watching the Democratic Debate? Bush is responsible for our Depression-like economy and our North Korea-like isolation in the world. As for any talk of 'victory' in Iraq the enemy has launched a new counter-offensive; terrorist forces in the US Congress (aka Democrats) have moved to cut the funding for the troops they support and the effects will be felt very soon. Free Health Care U Akbar!

Question SteveL
Since we have a volunteer army how was Kerry going to get those 40,000 troops?

What an amazing concept
Self interest plays a role in relationships? Chirac was making big bucks off of Saddam, but it was George's Bush's 'demeanor' that was to blame for France's refusal to ally with us in 2003. Ditto for Germany. Hmmm.

When Hillary is president and can't get someone to cooperate, I think Bill won't attribute it to her personality, but to nonalignment of interest.
His "alienation" statement is quite disingenuous therefore.
If she is president, however, I think it won't be overtly obvious when there's nonalignment. She'll follow her husband's lead and simply kick the can down the road, as he did, rather than confront it. The dirt's under the rug, but he remained "popular", which is what motivated him. What motivates her is a chance to get her hands on domestic policy; she'll therefore deal with international problems as if they don't exist (when Mahmoud tells her his nukes are for energy purposes, she'll accept that and get back to the business of handing out money). The president after her will have to deal with it mahmoud's peaceful nukes.

SteveL
My article defends no one. Any shortcomings in the military at this time rest at the feet of the current administration. Though all I have heard from the Democrats have been complaints and let's bring the soldiers home or now let's play chicken with their lives by withholding funds. The Democrats are Socialist by platform and the Republicans are Socialist by stealth. Neither party has read or understands our Constitution. If they had and made an effort to comply with its provisions we would be far stronger militarily and far more prosperous. Unfortunately, our Legislators are more interested in buying power for themselves than in protecting the lives and well being of those that pay our national bills (The People). Understand, Bush cannot spend money from the treasury unless that money is first appropriated by the Legislative Branches. Congress is not clean or even slightly soiled; they are down right filthy, muddy, and nasty to the bone in relation to our ability to continue the WOT. Congress and the Senate represent no one unless that entity or individual are approaching them with big pockets and large hands dragging a extra large suitcase all of which are full of money to buy favors and bend wills. Our system is broke and I see no one who has demonstrated the drive to fix it.

SteveL
I totally agree about getting out of Stadt a looooong time ago. Every time we FRG ladies went on shopping trips to Poland and Czechoslovakia invariably we ran across many people who wondered if we (the USA) were going to open bases in their country. On one trip to Poland, I had the pleasure of meeting a Polish officer, who's only wish is to see an American base in Boleslawiec before he dies. Another young man hopes to have an American base there, because he "loves what America stands for". WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR????

for YLG
YLG writes: "My friend was of the opinion that Germans were shooting themselves in the leg when they yelled for the 1st ID to leave."

We should have pulled our troops out of there a long time ago. The Cold War has been over for 17 years, and NATO's eastern flank has moved eastward as former Soviet bloc nations became Western allies. Western Europe has become a bunch of glorified welfare recipients, able to survive on pacifist policies while trading actively with enemy nations like Iran, solely because they can always count on Uncle Sam to bail them out if things get rough.

We can set up bases in other countries, including some Central and Eastern European countries where America is more highly appreciated and where the threat from Russia feels closer.

During the Cold War, it was said that the real purpose of NATO was to "keep the Americans in, the Russians out, and the Germans down." That's all moot now.

for Warrior

In 2004, Kerry (a DEMOCRAT) ran for President on a platform to increase the size of America's army by 40,000 men. Then SecDef Rumsfeld (a REPUBLICAN) said he was flatly opposed to expanding the Army.

Ever since 9-11, Rumsfeld stood in the way of expanding the number of "boots on the ground." After 9-11, Bush could have gone to Congress and asked for funding at least two or three more army divisions. Thanks to Rumsfeld, Bush did not do that.

By 2006, it got to the point that the Democrats were stronger advocates of a stronger army than the Bush Administration was. That's yet one more reason Rumsfeld should have been fired long ago.

YLG
I think he been reading Ann Coulter columns. I think that line is better then most of hers though.

Dr.

Lilly why
Do you need to be spoon fed so?
You "I read every word of this article and don't see anything in it about the balance of power returning to the United States."

Open wide, its a big spoon.

Mr. Krauthammer wrote:
"It's classic balance-of-power theory: Weaker nations turn to the great outside power to help them balance a rising regional threat. Allies are not sentimental about their associations. It is not a matter of affection, but of need"

And all the context around it gives examples of it happening and why. Please, when you read the words, remember they have meaning.

define: comprehension
"Grasping (understanding) the meaning of informational materials."

What Balance of Power, What Returning?
I read every word of this article and don't see anything in it about the balance of power returning to the United States. It's about international relations. Anyone who has remained conscious in the United States since 2000 is more than familiar with Bush II's grab for Executive Power. His whole schtick has been to act like a Divine Right monarch with the excuse that this is necessary for purposes of national security (even though Cheney declared before 9-11 that this administration would expand the powers of the President). That hasn't changed---the Bush administration is still playing fast & loose with the Congress. The title suggests that Bush may have learned how our government is supposed to work. Not so. Krauthammer, down here in townhall we reads English real good. Try again.

Snail Without a Shell
A snail without its shell is a slug. Allegorical for emphasis, nevertheless, after 6 years of the WOT, we have not reloaded or re-equipped as fast as we should. We now resemble a slug--moving too slow, without the armor we need (all categories) for our protection. We need new and improved equipment, large quantities of munitions, more men in uniform, and vast amounts of research and development in armaments to meet new anticipated wartime demands. We worry about the cost, or the Democrats so voice, without moving to satisfy wartime mission requirements. Pay the Doctor's bill or the patient will be left to die. We speak of a WOT that will last 30-50 years and in the same exhale admit we are stretched too thin to defeat a mid-20th century armed foe like Iran. Hear this--money spent on war increases our industrial base and industrial capabilities while concomitantly putting money in the pockets of American workers. The Democrats are so Socialist they would rather give the money away to non-workers in the form of food stamps, grants, welfare, and other Socialist endeavors which does nothing to help in our heavy industry independence. Heavy industry research and development always carries with it huge spin-offs in technology which are transferable to consumer products. Money is fluid, war does not cause deficits. It is the folly of pursuing Socialist programs during war that increases the deficit. Socialist recipients are generally in the bottom 50% of earners and that demographic pays no taxes. They contribute very little to the national coffers.

It scares me to think
I am afraid that with a lock on most mediums of information dissemination in America, coupled with the numerous "moles" within the adminsitrative departments of government and total sway over the publicly educated future generations the Democrats (may as well say neo-Communists) will prevail against reason and take totalitarian control of the USA.
I am keeping my firearms in good working order.

oops
comes to your door. Sorry.

Oh, and by the way . . .
. . . Robert, did you actually read, or have someone read you, Doctor Krauthammer's column?

Thanks to the author
Excellent insights. Cluck your tongues at police brutality and corruption, but when he|| comes to you door, hope that dialing 911 will bring the city's "finest." Or, failing that, perhaps owning a gun for self-defense wasn't such a bad idea after all. Look for the countries mentioned above to devote a little more GNP to their military next.

Yeah, Rocky!
Hillary did beat up on her wimpish dhimmi-cRAT opponents. She is going to be the dhimmi-cRAT nominee!

And then she'll finally have to face the American people, a real opponent, and the music.

You will not be so giddy in 365 days, my friend.

Thanks

It is a sad fact
that opinion defines reality. Not so much about measurements and the like -- rather, the realities of civilization. A wide and contradictory set of behaviours has been defined as normative. Religion or the various manifestations of atheism. (Karl Marx, at the end of his life, donned a prayer shawl and recited prayers learned in childhood.)

Even we, recalcitrant reactionary obscurantist that we are, have been forced to notice that Mr. Bush has used up a good deal of the good will, such as it has been, toward America as it expresses itself through its foreign policy. Cowboy diplomacy, in Hillary's term.

But we know that public opinion follows the news. If news it good, opinion is favorable. Many of us hate-filled right-wingers believe the United States has the most corrupt Media of any industrialized nation. Corrupt not in the sense of bribes and pay-offs, although that will certainly occur, but in the imbalance and self-deception of it bias. Alas, public opinion follows the news, which in the US is leftist.

Leftists have their own trouble with pronunciations. The polysyllabic words aren't so hard for them. As with simple ideas, like duty and self-sacrifice, they get all tongue tied over some pretty simple words. They can't tell the differences between winning and whining.

We lost Vietnam -- the country, not the war, because of a cowardly and treacherous press. Lo these four decades later they would reprise their greatest victory-through-defeat, and lose Iraq. But we're winning.

That's news they don't want to hear, or say. The rest of the world seems to be hearing it. So prick up your ears.

Nothing like a good scare
The Kumbaya Democrats have never understood the one thing that makes alliances work, because they do not understand the entire concept of family. That is, no matter how you and your sisters argue and fight among yourselves, let one of you be attacked or get in trouble from the outside and she can come running home to the others in the full knowledge that the rest have got her back. *Bare is the Brotherless Back* is a well known saying.

In times of lesser danger, people criticize each others taste in clothing, diction and grammar and carp at the lifestyle choices the other guy has made. But when things get tough, the ranks close.

Or if you want to put it in plain English, when the bad guys come calling, you run into the office of the guy who has the gun. Even if you were one of those people pressing yesterday for everyone in the office to be told to get rid of his guns.....

FUNNY HILLARY CLINTON VIDEO ON YOUTUBE
Check this YouTube video out. It's a spoof of HBO's CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM that makes fun of Hillary Clinton and Hollywood liberals.

The world seems
to be coming around but will Democrats? I doubt it. They have too much invested in our defeat and not just in the WOT, but in the economy as well.
