Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- There are three relevant questions concerning the Armenian genocide.

(a) Did it happen?

(b) Should the U.S. House of Representatives be expressing itself on this now?

(c) Was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's determination to bring this to a vote, knowing that it risked provoking Turkey into withdrawing crucial assistance to American soldiers in Iraq, a conscious (columnist Thomas Sowell) or unconscious (blogger Mickey Kaus) attempt to sabotage the U.S. war effort?

The answers are:

(a) Yes, unequivocally.

(b) No, unequivocally.

(c) God only knows.

That between 1 million and 1.5 million Armenians were brutally and systematically massacred starting in 1915 in a deliberate genocidal campaign is a matter of simple historical record. If you really want to deepen and broaden awareness of that historical record, you should support the establishment of the Armenian Genocide Museum and Memorial in Washington, D.C. But to pass a declarative resolution in the House of Representatives in the middle of a war in which we are inordinately dependent on Turkey is the height of irresponsibility.

The atrocities happened 90 years ago. Not a single living Turk under the age of 102 is in any way culpable. Even Mesrob Mutafyan, patriarch of the Armenian community in Turkey, has stated that his community is opposed to the resolution, correctly calling it the result of domestic American politics.

Turkey is already massing troops near the Iraq border, threatening a campaign against Kurdish rebels that could destabilize the one stable front in Iraq. The same House of Representatives that has been complaining loudly about the lack of armored vehicles for our troops is blithely jeopardizing relations with the country through which 95 percent of the new heavily armored vehicles are now transiting on the way to saving American lives in Iraq.

And for what? To feel morally clean?

How does this work? Pelosi says: "Genocide still exists, and we saw it in Rwanda; we see it now in Darfur." Precisely. And what exactly is she doing about Darfur? Nothing. Pronouncing yourself on a genocide committed 90 years ago by an empire that no longer exists is Pelosi's demonstration of seriousness about existing, ongoing genocide?

Indeed, the Democratic Party she's leading in the House has been trying for months to force a precipitous withdrawal from Iraq that could very well lead to genocidal civil war. This prospect has apparently not deterred her in the least.

"Friends don't let friends commit crimes against humanity," explained Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee that passed the Armenian genocide resolution. This must rank among the most stupid statements ever uttered by a member of Congress, admittedly a very high bar.

Does Smith know anything about the history of the Armenian genocide? Of the role played by Henry Morgenthau? As U.S. ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, Morgenthau tried desperately to intervene on behalf of the Armenians. It was his consular officials deep within Turkey who (together with missionaries) brought out news of the genocide. And it was Morgenthau who helped tell the world about it in his writings. Near East Relief, the U.S. charity strongly backed by President Wilson and the Congress, raised and distributed an astonishing $117 million in food, clothing and other vital assistance that, wrote historian Howard Sachar, "quite literally kept an entire nation alive."

So much for the U.S. letting friends commit crimes against humanity. And at the time, the Ottomans were not friends. They were an enemy power in World War I, allied with Germany. Now the Turks are indeed friends, giving us indispensable logistical help in our war against today's premier perpetrators of crimes against humanity -- al-Qaeda in Iraq and Afghanistan. Friends don't gratuitously antagonize friends who are helping fight the world's foremost war criminals.

So why has Pelosi been so committed to bringing this resolution to the floor? (At least until a revolt within her party and the prospect of defeat caused her to waver.) Because she is deeply unserious about foreign policy. This little stunt gets added to the ledger: first, her visit to Syria, which did nothing but give legitimacy to Bashar al-Assad, who continues to be engaged in the systematic murder of pro-Western Lebanese members of parliament; then, her letter to Costa Rica's ambassador, just nine days before a national referendum, aiding and abetting opponents of a very important free-trade agreement with the United States.

Is the Armenian resolution her way of unconsciously sabotaging the U.S. war effort, after she had failed to stop it by more direct means? I leave that question to psychiatry. Instead, I fall back on Krauthammer's razor (with apologies to Occam): In explaining any puzzling Washington phenomenon, always choose stupidity over conspiracy, incompetence over cunning. Anything else gives them too much credit.

The Armenian vote was . . .
clearly political. The hard-core Democratic leftists only want one thing: Humiliate President Bush by causing failure in Iraq. Any life and death consequences to the troops resulting from this act are not relevant.

Since the Democrats always say they support the troops, just exactly how would that legislation have helped the troops complete their mission? At the very least it would have put them in more danger by creating unrest in northern Iraq. The troops would have been further endangered due to Turkey's halting all support to the war effort.

Let's be honest: They were trying to drive a wedge between the USA and Turkey which would eventually lead to failure in Iraq.

Malicious intent
Gotta' disagree with you on option "C" Charles. Believe Pelosi and her like-minded George Soros' mercenaries deliberately raised the issue to undermine current mid-East policy.

Congress
Is made up of little tiny people with huge egos, steeped in a monumental arrogant elitism and a chronic stupidity that is absolutely astounding.

Yhis country is rotting from the inside with a splintered government that, even in wartime, just can't put their petty little politics aside to work together.

Somebody, ANYBODY, explain to me how, in a country with nearly 300 million people, we end up with the likes of George Bush as President, Nancy Pilosi as Speaker, Harry "The war is lost" Reid as Senate Majority Leader, and a host of other dimwits from John McCain to "Splash" Kennedy working incessantly to destroy what made this country great.

Bob C,
as my intellectually deficient brother (tee hee, I'll let the three of them sort that out), there ain't no explainin' it. Just wish there was some fixin'.

Bob C,
as my intellectually deficient brother (tee hee, I'll let the three of them sort that out)would say, there ain't no explainin' it. Just wish there was some fixin'.

Useful idiots
I expect the Democrats under Pelosi to be duplicitous in their efforts to undermine US policy in the middle east but I am appalled at the Republicans who joined them. Among these are the abovementioned Chris Smith (R-NJ) and my own congressman Ed Royce (R-CA). Prior to the blunder of cosponsoring H Res 106 (The Armenian Genocide Resolution) Royea had been a nearly perfect model of Conservatism.

Even a sizeable number of Democrats have removed their names from the list of cosponsors. But, as of this moment, Royce stubbornly persists in remaining in the ranks of the "useful idiots."

While I agree...
...with your assessment of politicians in DC, I can only ascertain that Soros gave then the idea. After all, doesn't Pelosi have a morning chat everyday with his organization? I don't think Pelosi would have thought up this resolution, since she hasn't bothered with any current genocides. She has clearly shown her colors with the company she keeps.

Excellent column as usual....
Charles ...I always enjoy your insightful comments and analysis of current events and in general agree with all of your points including point 'c' ....but as stupid as Nancey Pelosi is ....even she isn't stupid enough as to not know the potential dire consequences of her actions, to our troops in Iraq. After all ...I'm assuming that she can 'read'! There have been a myriad of print columns and analysis pointing out the potential damage this idiotic resolution could have on our troops and the war effort in Iraq. She must have staff members that can read...even if she can't. The idea that she is only trying to 'support' her Armenian constituents is nothing but a sham and a ruse to give her cover for her nefarious actions.

Even in her self-promoting and pompous proclamations about the 'evils' of genocide (which you quoted) reveal there are far more current examples of genocide that she could choose to condemn, if she weren't a monumental phony and hypocrite.

How far are we going to allow these traitorous politicians push the envelope before one of them has the guts to bring charges of treason against one of their 'good friends in congress' (to quote their BS formalities)!

Right om
The only possible fault I found with the article is Charles' trying to give the benefit of doubt as to Pelosi' motives. She is a saboteur, in my opinion and should be prosecuted as such.

Bravo Krauthammer
One would hope that Ms. Pelosi's constituents would hold her responsible for her actions that support the terrorists but unfortunately the residents of San Francisco have long since departed from any sense of being a part of this country. The question is, how can actual Americans who live in places where people care what happens to this country still vote to send their 'moderate' Democratic congressmen to Washington to support the clique of traitors that currently run Congress? Why isnt the Republican Party or some helpful surrogate group doing national issue ads to put these creeps on the defensive? Targeting swing districts will never solve a problem like this, these creeps need to be exposed and linked to every other Democrat.

how's this....
for moral cleanliness?

http://republicansexoffenders.com/

oh the hypocracy!!!

Yes, Charles
I agree, but you give Pelosi et al a pass when none is deserved. Their first clue should have been when Turkey withdrew their ambassador!

This resolution was a coldly calculated move to ignore (and endanger) the troops by p'ssing off a critical ally in time of war.

If it were shown that it was motivated purely to satisfy her large Armenian constituents, it is even worse! Putting her own political needs (re-election and monetary support toward that aim) above the well-being of her country at war is craven (at best) and treasonous (at worst).

Not to mention how hypocritical it is in light of the Liberal memes: We need to enlist the aid of 'moderate Muslims' instead of lumping all of them into terrorists or terrorist supporters, and we need to get a coalition together, etc.

Sort of puts the lie to that, doesn't it.

This is but another example of treachery. If it is, as Krauthammer's Razor indicates, monumental stupidity...the woman (and those who follow her lead) must be among the most intellectually bankrupt persons in America.

My sides hurt . . .
. . . from laughing at "Krauthammer's razor." This is a philosophical gem. How do we get it engraved in marble in the Capitol rotunda? I'll bet even Occam is laughing in his grave. Thanks for starting my day in good humor. Fred

The Razor
An excellent column - topped with the final paragraph. Our only salvation lies with the extablishment of reasonable TERM LIMITS. Enough of these little fiefdoms inhabited by these self-serving, petty people.

It stated out
With Nine Percent Nancy, it started out as greed. Some big Armenian backers waved some cash in her face (Hey, isn't Soros Armenian?}. When she found out if would hurt the war effort, she said to her aids (I'm just guessing, of course) "so much the better. We get the money and the war effort is damaged."

Based on everything I've read about her, she is all surface.

Yes, yes! We must have that memorial! It will be the salvation of our nation. Lets begin the campaign.

BobC
Re your trashing of Bush ... what are you, another idiot wanting instant gratification? You don't have a clue about the war or anything else apparently!

This war to stop Islamic fanaticism will require a long time and be somewhat difficult due to the depths of evil that enemy is willing to use against us! Wake up and get a grasp on reality and quit supporting liberal fools ... or you risk looking like one yourself!

for Bob_C
Bob_C writes: "Somebody, ANYBODY, explain to me how, in a country with nearly 300 million people, we end up with the likes of...dimwits."

Because we have a two-party system, so each party has to appeal to roughly half the country. That means it has to appeal to a wide variety of ethnicities, groups, causes, special interests. So each party has to be bland and not take principled stands too often that might alienate some powerful constituency.

Each party thus represents an AVERAGE of half the country's views. And when you average out a hundred million people, you inevitably get mediocrity--not too smart and not too left-wing and not too right-wing and not too hawkish and not too dovish and so on. Anything truly innovative or radical will be considered threatening to some part of the established order and will be jettisoned.

The only time that changes is when the public becomes so disgusted with Washington that they would be willing to consider a real sea-change despite its risks to their special interests. Those don't happen often: Franklin Roosevelt in 1932, Ronald Reagan in 1980.

Bowing her head reverently, she said....
Amen, and again I say, Amen.

"In explaining any puzzling Washington phenomenon, always choose stupidity over conspiracy, incompetence over cunning. Anything else gives them too much credit."

turkey
The Armenions know how our system works. Special interest groups often have inordinate power over our government. Israel is one example. Why do we give 4 billion each year in aid to israel? We were repaid for that blind support with a 9-11 attack by disgruntled Arabs. Why would an Armenian resolution be any different. Timing of the resolution was awful, no question about that but a voting block was satisfied and an election is coming soon.

answer to the question
1) Yes

2) No

3) Isn't it obvious? YES YES A MILLION TIMES YES!!!
That Pelosi has Armenians in her political district is just a convenient excuse for her to pull another stunt like this.

Why are we still asking this question?

let's put it this way
All those who honestly believe that this stunt was NOT intended to sabotage the war effort please raise your hands.

I thought so

I rest my case

The Armenian motion is treason
It is designed to hurt the US when we are at war.

Arrest them, try them and execute them.

Hillary delenda est.

No Armenians Uncle Max
Pelosi doesnt represent a district with Armenian neighborhoods or any significant Armenian population. Her district is predominately gay and upper middle class and wealthy DINKS who sneer at this country and are angry with her because she's too far to the RIGHT! I'm opposed to the terrorists but if we wanted to have a pilot program to test whether Sharia law works I think Ms. Pelosi's district would serve nicely, as they support it in spirit already.

Where are all of my favorite lefties?
Apparently, even Hal D., Phylo, Lilly et al can't conjure up a strained explanation as to why this symbolic, non-binding resolution was so imperative as to warrant the house's immediate attention, relations with Turkey be damned.

By the way...
...Today's WSJ editorial page puts a big damper on the so called Haditha massacre.

As much as I love CK I think he's is being far too kind to Pelosi and the conniving democraps.

Fantastic column
I agree he is probably being too kind but he probably pities lame-brains.
That last paragraph is going in my blog, but I wish I had the money to send copies to every idiot in Washington.

Pelosi Pholly
I can believe that Pelosi did not think through the implications of the resolution. But I KNOW that Murtha and others did! and they told her NOTHING. Maybe the first shot of a nice civil war amoung the Dems!

OK
I got the blog done, but I have to apologize to the commenters I quoted (badly). I should have made a note of what was actually said...when I got there I forget the wording. Hope I got the ideas right.

skep41
My comment about Pelosi having Armenians in her district was based on my having read that in a few news stories. If I was mistaken - mea culpa.

I live as far from sf as possible - Maine

Grace a Dieu

The woman is STILL a traitor. To think that she grew up in Baltimore and states that she is a good Catholic.

for shame

Pelosi's District
Pelosi's district (8th Ca) encompasses Pacific Heights, Nob and Telegraph Hills, The Presidio and the Embarcadero, an area where $250k pre annum is considered grinding poverty. It also includes the Mission, Hunters Point and the Tenderloin which used to be poor neighborhoods but have been gentrified. This is another instance where the richest districts are sending the most looney congressman to DC. My own district (30th CA) is probably the richest in the country; our Congressman- Henry Waxman. Rich people tend to be left-wing radical Democrats in this neck of the woods.

Don't Forget About Livingston
Former Louisian Congressman Robert L Livingston (Republican), since leaving Congress, has made a career of lobbying for the Armenians, and it's been very profitable for him. Google "livingston armenian lobbyist" or "lobbyist armenian louisian", any such combination, for many hits on the Armenian lobby in Congress. Things don't happen by magic in Congress: often what does happen is that lobbyists push for the action.

ill repute
Nancy Pelosi is seditious ans soulless. I believe she is a madame and her peers represent a House of ill repute. Le'Chaim.

Clinton '08? Hill no!

goofs
If the right can get p.oed about anything, the Turkey thing is small potatoes. I really don't understand how, one the one hand the posters talk about Christianity, and then attack and say nasty things about their fellow Christians.

replies to Rick Strongo and terry
to Rick Strongo: I don't know if I'm on your list of lefties who post, but I think Pelosi is incapable of thinking this issue out in any rational way. Who is she blaming for the Armenian genoicide anyway? The current Turkish government? No, they didn't do it. The Turkish people? Well, yes, they did, but none of the perpetrators are alive now, so is Pelosi blaming their descendants? That's really idiotic. As for the effect of the resolution on Turky's support for the US, yes, I think Pelosi is hoping Turkish reaction will undermine the war effort. I just wish she had the stones to say so.

Now as for terry: I salute you, terry, because you're the first Jew-hater to come out on this subject, in response to this column. I know you Jew-hating conservatives are out there, filled with your usual ignorance and crudeness. I expect nothing less, and I know that people like you speak for lots of conservativs who have been cowed by liberal PC pressure and won't really speak their minds. I can always count on Jew-haters to express themselves with all the clarity and eloquence your post exhibits. I'd tell you to go back to Nazi Germany, but we whipped them already, so I'm not sure where you can go. I do know you'll always find a home among American conservatives.

Bob_C asks....
..."Somebody, ANYBODY, explain to me how, in a country with nearly 300 million people, we end up with the likes of George Bush as President, Nancy Pilosi as Speaker, Harry "The war is lost" Reid as Senate Majority Leader, and a host of other dimwits from John McCain to "Splash" Kennedy working incessantly to destroy what made this country great."

George W. Bush is out in a few months, never to be President again. So, he is not the answer to your question.

The REAL answer is the fact that egotistical tin pot Napoleons (some named above) are allowed to take advantage of the gullability of voters by running for office tiome and time and time again. If two terms are good for the President, it should be good for Senators and Representatives, as well.

IMHO at least 90 of the 100 Senators should wear a permanent sign ohn their foreheads displaying their "best-before" date.

So, to answer Bob_C: lack of term limits.

When you buy tires for your car, unless you are cheap and uninformed, you don't buy retreads. Why do most people buy Congressional retreads??
