Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

WASHINGTON -- The poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko, renegade Russian spy and fierce critic of Vladimir Putin's government, is everywhere being called a mystery. There is dark speculation about unnamed ``rogue elements'' either in the Russian secret services or among ultra-nationalists acting independently of the government. There are whispers about the indeterminacy of things in the shadowy netherworld of Russian exile politics, crime and espionage.

Well, you can believe in indeterminacy. Or you can believe the testimony delivered on the only reliable lie detector ever invented -- the deathbed -- by the victim himself. Litvinenko directly accused Putin of killing him.

Litvinenko knew more about his circumstances than anyone else. And on their deathbed, people don't lie. As Machiavelli said on his (some attribute this to Voltaire), after thrice refusing the entreaties of a priest to repent his sins and renounce Satan, ``At a time like this, Father, one tries not to make new enemies.''

In science, there is a principle called Occam's razor. When presented with competing theories for explaining a natural phenomenon, one adopts the least elaborate. Nature prefers simplicity. Scientists do not indulge in grassy-knoll theories. You don't need a convoluted device to explain Litvinenko's demise.

Do you think Anna Politkovskaya, the journalist who was investigating the war in Chechnya, was shot dead in her elevator by rogue elements? What about Viktor Yushchenko, the presidential candidate in Ukraine and eventual winner, poisoned with dioxin during the campaign, leaving him alive but disfigured? Ultra-nationalist Russians?

Opponents of Putin have been falling like flies. Some jailed, some exiled, some killed. True, Litvinenko's murder will never be traced directly to Putin, no matter how dogged the British police investigation. State-sponsored assassinations are almost never traceable to the source. Too many cutouts. Too many layers of protection between the don and the hitman.

Moreover, Russia has a long and distinguished history of state-sponsored assassination of which the ice-pick murder of Trotsky was but the most notorious. Does anyone believe that Pope John Paul II, then shaking the foundations of the Soviet empire, was shot by a crazed Turk acting on behalf of only Bulgaria?

If we were not mourning a brave man who has just died a horrible death, one would almost have to admire the Russians, not just for audacity, but for technique in Litvinenko's polonium-210 murder. Assassination by poisoning evokes the great classical era of raison d'etat rubouts by the Borgias and the Medicis. But the futurist twist of (to quote Peter D. Zimmerman in The Wall Street Journal) the first reported radiological assassination in history adds an element of the baroque of which a world-class thug outfit such as the KGB (now given new initials) should be proud.

Some say that the Litvinenko murder was so obvious, so bold, so messy -- five airplanes contaminated, 30,000 people alerted, dozens of places in London radioactive -- that it could not have possibly been the KGB.

But that's the beauty of it. Do it obvious, do it brazen, and count on those too-clever-by-half Westerners to find that exonerating. As the president of the Central Anarchist Council (in G.K. Chesterton's ``The Man Who Was Thursday'') advised: ``You want a safe disguise, do you? ... A dress in which no one would ever look for a bomb? Why, then, dress up as an anarchist, you fool!''

The other reason for making it obvious and brazen is to send a message. This is a warning to all the future Litvinenkos of what awaits them if they continue to go after the Russian government. They'll get you even in London where there is the rule of law. And they'll get you even if it makes negative headlines for a month.

Some people say that the KGB would not have gone to such great lengths to get so small a fry as Litvinenko. Well, he might have been a small fry but his investigations were not. He was looking into the Kremlin roots of Politkovskaya's shooting. And Litvinenko claimed that the Russian government itself blew up apartment buildings in Moscow in 1999, killing hundreds of innocent civilians, in order to blame it on the Chechens and provoke the second Chechen war. Pretty damning stuff.

But even Litvinenko's personal smallness serves the KGB's purposes precisely. If they go to such lengths and such messiness and such risk to kill someone as small as Litvinenko, then no critic of the Putin dictatorship is safe. It is the ultimate in deterrence.

The prosecution rests. We await definitive confirmation in Putin's memoirs. Working title: ``If I Did It.''

Charles
I loved this article.
O.J. and Putin maybe they would enjoy a round of golf together, you know, talk over strategies.

Pat Buchanan
did an article exonerating Putin of this assassination. Pat identified possible perpetrators. He talked about people who might want to start a new Cold War, or even a hot war.

Unfortunately Pat stopped short of identifying those people who want to see America in another shooting war with Communist Russia. Now to me Krauthammer's speculation makes more sense than Buchanan's.

The key word here is speculation. Pat doesn't know who did it. Charles Krauthammer doesn't know who did it, and I sure don't know who did it.

We all know that the radio active poison is not readily available. We also know that Vladimir Putin is not mourning the deceased. George W. Bush told us that he looked into the eyes of Putin and knew that he could work with him. The implication was that Bush knew that Putin was trustworthy.

The President didn't tell us how he arrived at his conclusion about the character of Vladimire Putin. I wish he would elaborate on that. I think he looked into Vicente Fox's eyes too, and they have been cooperating with each other ever since. To what end we don't know.

I thought
the President looked into the eyes of Putin and saw his "soul".
Of course, GWB didn't say what he really saw there.
That would have been quite undiplomatic for a president to say to a foreign leader. I don't think GW wanted anyone to think he read crystal balls you know. That would have been embarrassing. To think your president would go to the level of seers and sorcerers. GW should have prayed that day and asked God what he saw in Putin's soul. That's more like it, talking to God about it. I wonder if God answers when he talks to him. Apparently not since GW seemed to stick to what he said about Putin. Nevertheless, it's just pure futility to figure out these guys minds, much less their souls. Gee, I wonder if Putin has a soul.

On their death beds,
people who believe in God don't lie. Why would the prospect of immenant death instill someone suddenly with integrity and virtuous character? Human psychology and dramatic Hollywood endings have only a coincidental congruence.
Revenge is as strong a motive as any, and the thought of reaching out from beyond the grave to undo one's bitter enemy may certainly be tempting.

For my part, I can resist anything but temptation. Good thing not many things tempt me.

This is the reason it is with the testimeny of two or three, that a thing is established.

Chesterton took the idea of the obvious disguise from Poe's "Purloined Letter." Honesty, Mr. Krauthammer, are we to learn police method from fictional characters? Great Scot, Holmes -- you're astounding!

I don't know who killed L. Probably Putin. But the reasons K aduces are insufficently convincing. Fornesic evidence clinches a case; circumstantial evidence merely justifies suspicion.

J
Billy Sunday and Billy Graham and Chuck Smith -- to name a few.

It was happening all through the last century. It's the reason that church attendance is nil in Europe, and switching in the US from old denominations to evangelical churches. It is the cause of American exceptionalism.

But in the very shadow of Sanai, they groveled before a golden calf.

Heritage is no guarentee of virtue.

Hmm. I wonder if there's something people who know how to pray, might do.

polonium
Skip,
Apparently it isn't too hard to get PO210 in enough quantity to kill.

Next we'll hear how Putin is "investigating" to find the "real" killer.

???
When GWB claimed to “have looked into [Putin’s] soul,” I knew GWB was telling us to use our decoder rings. No one else understood that???

Moreover, Charles Krauthammer is an MD – a psychiatrist. Think about it.

It couldn't be Putin.
When George looked into his eyes and saw his soul, he saw a GOOD man.
That should be enough for us, right?
Oh, and as long as we're going to waste heartbeats, anyone who thinks this will ever be linked to Putin, is addled.

Very interesting
Old Vlad is a KGB guy, and avowed Communist who has done all he can to make himself into an elected dictator. It's not that big a stretch for me to believe that he did it...but then I also read a lot of Tom Clancy novels...

Unquestionably, mad-Vlad did it
And, as Peppermint implied, he doesn't HAVE a soul (since soul-deadness was mandatory for rising high in czarist Cheka, let alone NKVD transmogrified to KGB).

Hidden Message
Could it be that Putin was sending a message:

Mess with me and Russia and we will use any means, even radiological/nuclear to oppose your goals.
Although, Putin would never do this directly to the US or it's interests, it may be a sign that he would assist others in doing so.
This may seem far-fetched, but, Putin crossed a new threshold with this assassination with no apparent reason to do so as there are many other traditional and effective methods.
Maybe it is time for GWB to gaze longingly into Putin's eyes and reassess his friend.

svpallava and Peppermint
"rising high in czarist Cheka"--I do not understand the meaning of this statement. Putin was born in 1952 and worked in the KGB starting in 1975. The Czar was history by 1918. Putin is KGB all the way.
Peppermint--I note the impunity you feel when you discuss prayer/God and answered prayer--that is an indicator of where we are in this country morally and spiritually. I can remember when no one would say anything that could be taken as blasphemy toward God--now everyone is a stand up comedian and scorns God and those that believe in him. If God is a joke, you are "home free", if not, you can tell Satan you were lax on your "due diligence".

Putin's No Bush Leaguer
Putin looked into GWB’s eyes and saw a half-wit. I’m sure he also came to understand the meaning of the term “bush league”.

Putin's No Bush Leaguer
Putin looked into GWB’s eyes and saw a half-wit. I’m sure he also came to understand the meaning of the term “bush league”.

GRASSY KNOLL THEORIES?
AN EXCELLENT COLUMN WITH ONE GLARING EXCEPTION. THE SINGLE DANCING BULLET THEORY WITH THE BULLET CHANGING DIRECTION ENTERING AND LEAVING TWO BODIES IS A THEORY THAT IS DEFINITELY NOT A SIMPLE OCCAM'S RAZOR EXPLANATION. WHEN DID SOMETHING LIKE THAT HAPPEN BEFORE IN ANYONE'S MEMORY? I AM SURE THAT SOMETHING LIKE THAT DOES HAPPEN FROM TIME TO TIME. THE POINT IS THAT IT ISN'T COMMON AND IT ISN'T SIMMPLE. A SECOND GUNMAN IS SIMPLE. IN ALL LIKLIHOOD A COMBINATION OF TWO GUNMEN IN SEPARATE INCIDENTS KILLED OVERR ONE HUNDRED PEOPLE LAST WEEK.

IF YOU GOOGLE IT YOU WILL FIND THAT KRAUTHAMMER USES THIS CUTE "GRASSY KNOLL THEORY" THROW AWAY AGAIN AND AGAIN. HE RETURNS TO IT AS IF HE IS PLAYING WITH A BAD TOOTH. ON THIS ONE POINT HE SEEMS TO LACK ANY SELF AWARENESS, MY GUESS IS THAT 4 OUT OF 5 PEOPLE WHO READ TOWNHALL PUT MORE CREDIBILITY IN THE GRASSY KNOLL THEORY THAN THE SINGLE BULLET THEORY.

WAKE UP CHARLES! RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR COLUMN YOU STARTED LOSING HALF YOUR AUDIENCE. PUTTING "GRASSY KNOLL" ASIDE, THIS IS WITHOUT A DOUBT THE DEFINITIVE ARTICLE ON THE INCIDENT.

READ THIS, BE AMAZED!
The media is conveniently leaving two very important things out of the limelight....

1. James Baker and son are operating a law firm in Saudi Arabia...hmmm dig deeper people!!!
Go here:
http://www.homestead.com/prosites-prs/baker_saudi.pdf

2. That Litvinenko converted to Islam, and on his deathbed asked for a proper "islamic burial".
Pollonium is hard to get and hard to handle, he could have been planning an attack on Brit Airways...through handling could have poisoned himself...

Skip, Patriot's Game
"George W. Bush told us that he looked into the eyes of Putin and knew that he could work with him. The implication was that Bush knew that Putin was trustworthy"

Guys, Putin is an ex-spy. He is trained to get people to trust him.

svpallava, "czarist Cheka" is a contradiction in itself, like "liberal patriot". Cheka was a predecessor of the KGB, organized after the Czars were overthrown. It's solders actually executed last Russian czar Nicholay II together with his family (wife and 5 kids).

Tanabear, well, standard liberal conspiracy crap. Why stop there? How's this: Bush also was the ring-leader of 9-11 hijackers and drinks blood of Guantanamo detainees? Maybe, he is the one who poisoned Litvinenko? Has anything bad happened in the last 6 years for which Bush (and us, nasty neo-cons) are not to blame? In any case, please don't stop posting, keep on entertaining us!

This is a no brainer
to me. Putin is ex KGB, probably still is KGB or whatever it's called now.
Why would he worry about getting caught? It cannot ever be traced.
On top of that, he has this new alliance going on with China and Iran. Another axis of evil? Putin is loading up with big guns on his side. His power is escalating with his comrades in evil.

And to whoever said something about me and God, I was writing tongue in cheek. The whole paragraph I wrote was tongue in cheek and it was late and I was free associating.

MacZed
Thanks for standing up for my honor.

Great article
But I there are a few things I haven't heard adequately discussed elsewhere.

The first is that British police have determined that Litvenenko was poisoned when he met with Kovtun and Lugovoy. Apparently it was put in his tea. I find this quite interesting considering that Anna Politskavkaya was also poisoned via tea when she was flying to Beslan to try to negotiate an end to what would be Russia's worst terrorist catastrophe to date. Had she made it, perhaps many of those children would still be alive (Obviously she survived the attack only to be gunned down a few years later).

There is no doubt in my mind that Putin is behind the attack, which seems orchestrated in such a way as to point a non-conclusive finger at his government. Why else would Polonium be used when Ricin would be easier to acquire and harder to trace? Surely nobody is so stupid as to deliberately make things unnecessarily hard.

The cold hard truth is that in all probability this appears to be an incident aimed at terrorizing the Russian emigrant community. By leaving little doubt but no proof that the Kremlin was involved, a message is sent to all those that would stand up to oppose Russia. I know of no better example of state terrorism than this.

Even if we are to give Putin the benefit of the doubt, the fact remains that the Russian government has tirelessly worked to slow down and impede the investigation. A week ago, Putin said "This is not a violent death." And British investigators have been passively hindered if not actively opposed by rules placed on them by the FSB. In short, if Putin isn't sponsoring terrorists, he is at least giving them shelter and safe harbor.

It is time to put Russia on the State Department's list of state sponsors of terrorism before a similar incident occurs on US soil.

Nee
There is question whether Litvenenko converted to Islam. I suspect that if he did, it was to show solidarity with the Chechens.

As for Polonium, it is easy to obtain in very small quantities (unitednuclear.com), but very difficult to untraceably obtain in quantities that would be sufficient to be used in a situation like this. Furthermore, like other alpha, non-gamma sources (liek Plutonium), it is actually quite easy to handle (latex gloves would be a good idea simply because you don't want to accidently injest the stuff later). A glass jar will stop all the radiation from Polonium 210, and even if it doesn't the alpha particles can't penetrate your skin.

For the as yet uninformed: Polonium 210 is an alpha source with a halflife of about 135 days. This means that over a period of 135 days, half of the Polonium 210 atoms will decay, releasing what is essentially a helium nucleus (2 protons and 2 neutrons) without electrons. This electrically charged alpha particle is extremely reactive and can't penetrate much matter. But once it reacts, it tears apart chemical bonds, and creates a chain reaction which can cause severe cellular or genetic damage. For this reason, alpha sources are only considered dangerous when inhaled, injected, or ingested, but handling them is not a problem. Also, if the particle is produced in the body, it causes much more damage than other forms of ionizing radiation.

Hmmm
Wonder how soon the CGI guys from the Harry Potter movies can expect a Polonium shooter from the figure model for Dobby.

my 2 cents
Remove the word "If" from the title of the article.

This is nothing new for Russia - does the name Rasputin ring a bell? Russia has been around for many more centuries than we rookies who have been here for just a few.

Abd Russia has produced some awesome music. Rather they have - Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, etc.

Uncle Max
Oh so true, Rasputin! And what a story that was. I am a lover of Russian history being one quarter Russian myself.

And, Tchaikovsky, how I love his music. I'm more partial to Stravinsky and I saw a ballet, Le Sacre
du Printemps that was just fabulous.

And don't forget Tolstoy, the great writer.

I digress off the topic. Russians are passionate people and have always been known to have many interesting characters. I suppose Putin is just one of many. Even though the man is evil he is somewhat of a fascinating individual.

Occam's Razor
The main quote attributed to William of Occam in this regard is generally translated as "One should not needlessly multiply entities." It is attributed to him as an answer to the question "How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?"

Simply saying that Putin isn't involved, when it looks like the Polonium came from a reactor in Siberia, when it looks like his meeting with the two Russian former FSB members was the time of his poisoning, etc. seems to raise the question: "Why is it necessary to presume that this was the work of rogue elements?" "Why must we multiply entities?" Absent answers to these questions, one must assume that Putin was probably involved.

two more cents
Peppermint - Thanks for the compliment.

Somewhere in my remembrances I remember having heard a story about some terrorists, in the mid-east I think, who kidnapped a Russian diplomat or something like that and demanded ransom for him. The Russian response was to deliver the freshly butchered parts of a relative of one of the captors. The message was received and acknowledged and the Russian whatever-he-was was quickly released.

We in America live a protected and sheltered life, much less than that before 9/11, but we are still better off than anyone. In my opinion we just cannot comprehend the depth of savagery to which our enemies can sink. Not only can, but do.

In a speech in June of this year not long before Hezbollah kicked off the latest round of hostilities with Israel (which they will be doing again soon), Sheik Hassan Nasrallah made a speech on Al-Jazeera TV in which he said, among other things, that one of their strengths was their willingness to sacrifice their children. HE MEANT IT. (Source http://www.memri.org Special Dispatch)

Could anyone even imagine the reaction if one of our leaders said anything like that? In the mid east it was barely noticed. These people form children's militias. These people have no regard for human life and they are savage beyond any measure that we can comprehend.

Uncle Max
I remember that story you told. I can't recall where I read it either. I also heard what Nasrallah said too. Children mean NOTHING to them.
And, you are dead on with your comments. We here in the US cannot imagine the savagery.

Then there was the nun who was brutally killed when the Muslims didn't like what the Pope said.

How about our own soldiers burned, killed, dragged through the streets and hung on a bridge (forgive me I forget the name of the town in Iraq)? Michael Savage had the pictures on his website because he was angry the MSM would not show the pictures. His theory was we all need to see the barbarism for ourselves instead of it being censored. Because some of us just aren't getting it.

Oh, and where was the world outcry over that??
But we are held to a "higher standard" and it is used against us at every opportunity.

For example: Water boarding!!

I would suggest that what was done to our soldiers was far worse torture. I believe they were dragged out of the burning vehicle before they were dead so further could be inflicted before they hung them from that bridge.

Deathbed lying...
... isn't exactly a new thing. Think: Alger Hiss. A man on his deathbed who wishes to have his death (and therefore his life) be meaningful and worth remembering would have every reason to lie. In this case, Litvinenko had motive for lying. Obviously, Putin had motive for the murder, and ultimately Putin "wins", even with the bad press -- the next person will be a bit more hesitant to dig into his government's actions now. So even if Putin wasn't behind the poisoning, he benefits. That's ultimately why I believe he DID do it.

einhverfr,
your posts are very helpful. In fact, it is posters like you who keep me coming back to Town Hall in spite of certain irritants on this site. There are a group of posters who have incredible knowledge on an amazing variety of subjects.

Now I readily concede that I am not qualified to dispute your comments about the substance that killed the ex-KGB agent. In spite of that, I believe and appreciate your explanation of the properties of Pelonium 210.

I don't know your background, and it is not necessary that I do. The same applies to others who post here. The main thing is that because of the participation of some of the regular posters on Town Hall, I enjoy the site and the opinions of some of these regulars.

I would name them but I am certain that I would forget someone who should definitely be on the list. I want to take this opportunity to thank you again, and to thank the rest of the crew on Town Hall. At least the ones I agree with. (Smile)
