Borat looks in the wrong place for anti-Semitism

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WASHINGTON -- ``Borat" is many things: a sidesplitting triumph of slapstick and scatology, a runaway moneymaker and budding franchise, the worst thing to happen to Kazakhstan since the Mongol hordes, and, as columnist David Brooks astutely points out, a supreme display of elite snobbery reveling in the humiliation of the hoaxed hillbilly.

But it is one thing more, something Brooks alluded to in passing but which requires at least one elaboration: an unintentionally revealing demonstration of the unfortunate attitude of many liberal Jews toward working-class American Christians, especially evangelicals.

You know the shtick. Borat goes around America making anti-Semitic remarks in order to elicit a nodding anti-Semitic response. And with enough liquor and cajoling, he succeeds. In the most notorious such scene (on ``Da Ali G Show" where the character was born), Borat sings ``Throw the Jew Down the Well'' in an Arizona bar as the local rubes join in.

Sacha Baron Cohen, the creator of Borat, revealed his purpose for doing that in a rare out-of-character interview he granted Rolling Stone in part to counter charges that he was promoting anti-Semitism. On the face of it, this would be odd, given that Cohen is himself a Sabbath-observing Jew. His defense is that he is using Borat's anti-Semitism as a ``tool'' to expose it in others. And that his Arizona bar stunt revealed, if not anti-Semitism, then ``indifference'' to anti-Semitism. And that, he maintains, was the path to the Holocaust.

Whoaaaa. Does he really believe such rubbish? Can a man that smart (Cambridge, investment banker and now brilliant filmmaker) really believe that indifference to anti-Semitism and the road to the Holocaust are to be found in a country and western bar in Tucson?

Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world.

With anti-Semitism re-emerging in Europe and rampant in the Islamic world; with Iran acquiring the ultimate weapon of genocide and proclaiming its intention to wipe out the world's largest Jewish community (Israel); with America and, in particular, its Christian evangelicals the only remaining Gentile constituency anywhere willing to defend that besieged Jewish outpost -- is the American heartland really the locus of anti-Semitism? Is this the one place to go to find it?

In Venezuela, Hugo Chavez says that the ``descendents of the same ones that crucified Christ'' have ``taken possession of all the wealth in the world.'' Just this month, Tehran hosted an international festival of Holocaust cartoons featuring enough hooked noses and horns to give Goebbels a posthumous smile. Throughout the Islamic world, newspapers and television, schoolbooks and sermons are filled with the most vile anti-Semitism.

Baron Cohen could easily have found what he seeks closer to home. He is, after all, from Europe where synagogues are torched and cemeteries desecrated in a revival of anti-Semitism -- not ``indifference'' to but active -- unseen since the Holocaust. Where a Jew is singled out for torture and death by French-African thugs. Where a leading Norwegian intellectual -- et tu, Norway? -- mocks ``God's Chosen People'' (``We laugh at this people's capriciousness and weep at its misdeeds'') and calls for the destruction of Israel, the ``state founded ... on the ruins of an archaic national and warlike religion.''

Yet amid this gathering darkness, an alarming number of liberal Jews are seized with the notion that the real threat lurks deep in the hearts of American Protestants, most specifically Southern evangelicals. Some fear that their children are going to be converted; others, that below the surface lies a pogrom waiting to happen; still others, that the evangelicals will take power in Washington and enact their own sharia law.

This is all quite crazy. America is the most welcoming, religiously tolerant, philo-Semitic country in the world. No nation since Cyrus the Great's Persia has done more for the Jews. And its reward is to be exposed as latently anti-Semitic by an itinerant Jew looking for laughs and, he solemnly assures us, for the path to the Holocaust?

Look. Harry Truman used to tell derisive Jewish jokes. Richard Nixon said nasty things about Jews in government and elsewhere. Who cares? Truman and Nixon were the two greatest friends of the Jews in the entire postwar period: Truman secured them a refuge in the state of Israel and Nixon saved it from extinction during the Yom Kippur War.

It is very hard to be a Jew today, particularly in Baron Cohen's Europe, where Jew-baiting is once again becoming acceptable. But it is a sign of the disorientation of a distressed and confused people that we should find it so difficult to distinguish our friends from our enemies.

It's safe to be anti anti-Semetic
only in the USA. Try it in France and you'll get put on trial, like the late Oriana Fallaci.

http://forgottenprophets.blogspot.com/2006/03/obituary.html

So the brash antics of Cohen slash Borat pale to a pastel yellow, when we remember that he could have been offensive in some other country, and been killed for his efforts.

One wonders why he doesn't develop an anti-Moslem character? Well, no ... one need actually not wonder. It would be just as hilarious, no doubt -- for all of the three minutes he'd be alive after the character's unveiling. Recall Robert Redeker, the French professor compelled to go into hiding because of his article in Le Figaro, criticizing the intolerance of Islam.

(I had to replace the "e" with *. Did you know one of my comments here was removed as offensive? Some might find this link a bit trying. But it has a point.)

Irony is, apparently, lost not only on the Moslems, but weirdly on the very clever and funny Cohen as well.

The world is full of Hamans. Haman the Agagite -- from the book of Ester, remember? We had thought the Agagites, congenital enemies of Israel, were a people swallowed into the dust. Seems not. And to find the very descendants of Levi, as Cohen would be, silent before such evil, while picking at the mote in the eye of his dearest friend ... well, is this right?

Not so much.

cannot quite agree...
I think Cohen's actual take was that indifference allowed a holocaust to emerge, not that it was the impetus. That's what happened during the 20th century and it helps enable Iran today.

I'm sure he wanted to make money with his film, and the best way to do that is to get Americans to watch it. Americans wouldn't have watched it if he'd made the film in Europe, but he was sure to find latent anti-semitism here (even if it needs a little encouragement). So the US was the venue of choice.

Call me anti-semitic?
"an unintentionally revealing demonstration of the unfortunate attitude of many liberal Jews toward working-class American Christians, especially evangelicals."

I have not seen "Borat" since I prejudged it to be sophomoric, maybe there is more to it than I thought there would be and should see it.

I have been the recipient of the attitude described above and it is not pleasant. There have been times in my life when I have had to cater to American J#ws whose arrogance was overwhelmingly disturbing and so wide spread among them as to seem genetic.

The ADL and others are quick to whine and protest any percieved insult, but never seem to address the behavior of their own constituents whch may be a proximate cause of the conflict. (They have set the example for CAIR by the way.)

I would implore J#wish leadership to address the behaviour of their own before the there is a pogrom born of exasperation. Ever wonder why the holocaust was an easy sell?

I dislike myself for having such thoughts and feelings, but there IS justification.

FOWG
You ask 2 questions in your blog I will respond to.
First, Are you anti-Semitic? Second, Ever wonder why the Holocaust was an easy sell? Here are some facts that will tend to answer your questions but these facts are just part of the whole Bolshevik story.

Here is a small amount of information about just two Jews under Stalin (there were thousands of Jewish Bolsheviks in Leadership positions--even Trotsky was a Jew). In the first instance the words quoted appear in Solzhenitsyn's book. They are not my words.

Jewish Leaders Folder: Genrik Yagoda
Genrikh Yagoda in "Gulag Archipelago" by Alexander Solzhenitsyn
GENRIKH YAGODA
( Alexander Solzhenitsyn, "Gulag Archipelago" )

Alexander Solzhenitsyn is the "father of democracy" in Russia. In one of
his books, the first volume of "Gulag Archipelago," he wrote about how
the communists in Russia, who consisted of only the Jews and a tiny
minority of Russian criminals, amoral opportunists, and welfare rabble were able to
maintain their grip on all of Russia by keeping the Russian majority, which hated them, too frightened to resist.

Solzhenitsyn writes of the period in 1934 and 1935, when the Jewish commissar Genrikh Yagoda headed the Soviet secret police, and Yagoda's
black vans went out every night in St.Petersburg, known then as Leningrad, to round up "class enemies": former members of the aristocracy, former civil servants, former businessmen, former teachers and professors and professional people, any Russian -- any real Russian
-- who had graduated from a university. A quarter of the population of the city was arrested and liquidated by Yagoda during this two-year
period.
And Solzhenitsyn laments that the citizens of St. Petersburg cowered behind their doors when the black vans pulled up at their apartment
houses night after night to arrest their neighbors. If only the decent Russians had fought back, Solzhenitsyn says, if only they had ambushed some of these secret police thugs in the hallways of their apartments with knives and pickaxes and hammers, if only they had spiked the tires of the police vans while the thugs were in the apartments dragging out their victims, they could easily have overwhelmed Yagoda's forces and
forced an end to the mass arrests. But they didn't fight back, and the arrests and liquidations continued. And so, Solzhenitsyn concludes, because of their cowardice and their selfishness the Russians deserved
what the communists and Yagoda did to them.

Lazar Kaganovich: Stalin's Mass Murderer
American Times Today
Lazar Moiseyevich Kaganovich (Kogan), of Jewish descent, was born in Kubany, near Kiev, Ukraine, in 1893. In 1911 he joined the Jewish-founded Communist Party and became involved with the Bolsheviks . Kaganovich took an active part in the 1917 takeover of Christian Russia by Communism and rose rapidly in the Party hierarchy.

From 1925 to 1928, he was first secretary of the party organization in Ukraine and by 1930 was a full member of the Politburo.

Kaganovich was one of a small group of Stalin's top sadists pushing for very high rates of collectivization after 1929. He became Stalin's butcher of Christian Russians during the late 1920s and early 1930s when the Kremlin (jews) launched its war against the kulaks (small landowners who were Christians) and implemented a ruthless policy of land collectivization. The resulting state-organized forced famine, was a planned genocide and killed 7,000,000 Ukrainians between 1932 and 1933, and inflicted enormous suffering on the Soviet Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan.

Josef Stalin (Dzhugashvili) altered census figures to hide the millions of famine deaths when the Ukraine and northern Caucasus region had an extremely poor harvest in 1932, just as Stalin was demanding heavy requisitions of grain to sell abroad to finance his industrialization program which was on top of enforced collective farming of 1929. Stalin is conservatively estimated to have been responsible for the murder and/or starvation of 40,000,000 Russians and Ukrainians during his reign of terror, while the total deaths resulting from the de-kulaklization and famine, by way of Kaganovich, can be conservatively estimated at about 14,500,000.

Stalin had 3 wives all Jewesses and his daughter , Svetlana had 4 husbands--3 of which were Jews. It is now believed Stalin was a Jew from Georgia.
Notice Solzhenitsyn's reference to 1/4 of Leningrad population murdered by Yagoda. The number murdered by Kaganovich, can be conservatively estimated at about 14,500,000. All of Europe knew of these murders. Refugees flocked out of the Eukraine and other parts of Russia to tell of the atrocities and who was perpetrating them. Karl Eisner (Jew) and Rosa Luxemburg (Jew) and Kurt Leibknecht (Jew) had attempted to install Communism in Munich and Berlin in the early 20s. These people were not just faces in the crowd; they were the leaders and they were untimately shot by the Freikorps to put down the attempted coups. Bela Kun (Jew) took power and set up Communism ( after schooling by the Bolsheviks in Russia)in Hungary during roughly the same period. Germans had a wonderful school system and a free press and they have always been very literate and politic. There were newspapers in Germany which wrote daily about the Russian atrocities and reported on the Communist Party activities in Germany with emphasis on the Jewish involvement. At that time all of Europe was anti-Semitic and the holocaust was an easy sell.

Look
If Cohen had gone to an Islamic country and coaxed out anti-semitic drivel, who would find it funny? Islamic nations are widely known to be inherently anti-semitic and don't even pretend to hide that fact. Wipe Jews off the face of the Earth, destroy Israel...all sentiments you'll hear from your average Syrian 8-year-old. No surprise = no humor.

The humor Cohen creates derives from EXACTLY the kind of self-satisfied `we aint got not problem here` obfuscation employed by Krauthammer.

The more nationally recognised commentators get up proudly on the pulpit and say `THEY are prejudiced, but WE are not`, the funnier it is when Borat wanders into an American bar and gets ther whole place singing `throw the Jew down the well`

Incidentally, European attitudes to any social group or race vary from country to country. Europe is not one homogenous block with the same laws and social outlooks. To, say, accuse a Brit of anti-semitic attitudes because a bunch of French anti-semites desecrate a Jewish graveyard in France...well, it would enrage, offend and frustrate that average Brit.

The success of `Borat` has amazed me. I had no idea there was a mass audience for this kind of perceptive and subtly revealing humor.

Can't wait for the sequel.

Truman
Truman assisted in the founding of Israel becausse he didn't want to accept the Jewish refugees from the holocaust here in America. We did not open our borders to them. But we have accepted virtually every other group of refugees since them.

Otherwise, I agree with Krauthammer's column.

Actually, I think what ended the vast majority of American antisemitism was affirmative action. American Christians realized we are all in the same category after all: "whites". :) There is a certain fraternity that comes from being common victims of discrimination.

Krauthammer
You're dispassionate and panoramic intellect is frightening at times, including now.

Warrior
Yagoda looks alot like Cohen, actually.

I Agree With Hank's Post
I saw Borat. I laughed. I cried...but only because I couldn't stop laughing. In the movie, Americans come off as extremely welcoming and patient with Borat, not confronting him on his brash comments out of mere politeness. It's funny. Real life anti-semitism? Not so much.

American Anti-Semitism
I'll accept Krauthammer's comparison of American and European anti-Semitisim. I have no first hand knowledge of European anti-Semitism. That said, I can confirm, from personal experience, that anti-Semitism, at least latent, exists in the US.

Even though my father's family has been Christian for 15 generations that we have been able to document, my surname is one that is commonly thought to be Jewish. My wife's and my two daughters' given names are all of Old Testament origin and help to reinforce our "Jewishness". But just last week, I was involved in negotiations concerning the purchase of a new car and noted a distinct change in the attitude of the sales person when I 'happened' to mention that a major use of the new car would be driving to church on Sunday.

Borat
I saw Borat on Leno or Letterman with the lady (I cannot come up with her name) that was jailed for stock manipulation. Borat was possessed by sexual innuendo and I found him to be repulsive. If there was humor there, I missed it. Admittedly, I am a serious person and laughter sought by contrived situations does not come easily to me.

Europe and Anti-Semitism
Anti-Semitism did not leave Europe. Jews left Europe, by train, to the death camps. The Jews were delivered by the peoples in the conquered countries to the Germans, the Germans shipped them to the destinations designated where the Jews were liquidated. Now the Jews are coming back and anti-Semitism is on the rise. Who is surprised by this turn of events?

Amreican antisemitism
American antisemitism was much more common when I was growing up in the 50s and 60s. I remember a neighbor kid calling me a Christ killer, and once attended a church service where the minister went on a rant about the filthy Jews. It was common for people to speak of Jews as dirty and/or greedy.

Times have really changed. My kids are exposed to nothing like that. There has been a real change of consciousness about group prejudices.

Unfortunately, it is precisely the protected minorities that seem to express the most antisesmitism today (along with Muslims, who are the main perpetrators of antisemitism in Europe today). There are studies of antisemitic attitudes among protected minorities, I believe conducted by the Anti Defamation League. It is quite prevalent, possibly because no one ever criticizes prejudices on the part of protected minorities.

fowg and warrior
Congratulations. Both of you have proven that Mr. Krauthammer is incorrect, and that Anitsemitic rightest are still "embedded" within the conservative family, and need to be spotlighted and rooted out.

Any statistician of Communism could prove warrior wrong. Jews were a minority of communists, and they were persecuted as well. It is also illogical to think that unmartial Jews won the Russian Civil War, or ordered the Dr.s plot. According to you, they deserved to have their babies thrown into a fire?

An Anti-semite, by definition, sees many communists, and focuses on the Jews among them and decides they are all Jews, That Jews are a magical cosmic threat, and have racial/religious traits that are inheritably evil. The modern conservative movement rejects racism, but both of you are potential perpetraitors of the oldes hate. Warrior is at best a neo-nazi, and should stick to his racist web sites.

Antisemitics need to be rooted out?
You mean like the Jews needed to be rooted out in Nazi Germany?

How about a reality check here:

The holocaust has not yet happened (nuclear war); what happened in Europe during WWII was that 1/3 of the people condemened to torture, suffering and death were Jews. They were targeted for being Jews, just as the gypsies et al were targeted for being gypsies et al.

Meanwhile, more Jews were butchered in the Soviet Union than all who died in the Nazi death camps. You remember our good ally, the Soviets?

Yet Borat picks on Southern, U.S. Christians? Why? Well, lessee... heard a good redneck joke lately? Think it would have been difficult or dangerous to tell a jewish joke in Nazi Germany? Jews were allowed to be the whipping boys of every dissatisfied loser in Europe. But the liberal left have labelled Jews, blacks, women (with the exception of blondes) and moslems as "off-limits" to old-fashioned stereotyping. But Southern Christians... well, now... they believe in all those things liberals have been trying to suppress since the cultural revolution (read: 1960s, for those of you not old enough to remember). So they deserved to be picked-on, with their superstitious, backward views on abortion and marriage and patriotism...

Someone once said that generals are always ready to fight the last war. In the effort to eliminate bigotry (a futile, unnatural and harmful effort), liberals (and you pseudo-conservatives) are still fighting the last war.

I read in Kathleen Parker's column where this Borat character insulted the wife of a minister and brought his feces back from the bathroom to the dinner table. He'd have been shown through the door in my household. No, I wouldn't have bothered to open it. If that's antisemitic, then that's what it is...

antisemitism
Is antisemitism alive and well in America? You don't have to look any further than The Huffington Post for that answer.

boar borat
I am waiting for the lawsuits and if I were on the jury I make the McDonald coffee award look like peanuts compared to what I would award his victims. I am not a lawyer, but getting someone drunk and then having them sign a contract is a NO NO.

lazer
You read my blog which contained names and historical descriptions of what occurred. You want to say I extrapolated my opinions based on a preconceived notion that Jews are bad. Nothing in that blog is my opinion, it is all quotes from references provided by searching Google. If you can provide me sites that disprove any of my research, I will be pleased to review them and change my references and report yours. My thrust is not to denigrate any group but to show what occurred in Russia and identify what appears to be a cartel of Radical Communist Jews that murdered millions of Russian citizens. Your comments are not referenced and all I want from you is some references to back up what may be just your hurt feelings smothered in a good layer of pure tripe.

Okay, Lazer!
See the comments by RiverKing. I believe him 100% since I was the salesman for many years in an area where Jews were common and the store was Jewish owned. Whether you care to accept it, or not those in retail have preconcieved attitudes toward certain ethnic groups based on EXPERIENCE. Take the time to find an auto salesman and ask about "Dots". He will tell you he hides when a person resmbling an Asian Indian approaches. If a deal is made at all, it will take all all day with no profit as the result.Ask another and another and you will get the same story.

I ran into a series of Jews and endured the arrogance and disdain with which they treated me until I had to accept that the greater number of them were not worth my time! Working for a man of the Hebrew persuasion subjected me to prejudice in favor of other Jews working in that place.

These are some of my experiences and i resent your challenging me based on some PC concept that 'we are all the same'. BS, culture does make a difference.

I was instructed in my early days by nuns who told me Jews were people of God and had been unfairly treated through history in spite of being wonderful folks. I did not know many while growing up and did not face the prevalent attitudes they often display until adulthood. My conclusions were a result of direct EXPERIENCE. In spite of dealing with some Jews I admired, the pecentage of obnoxious individuals was too great to ignore and forced me to consider them as a group.

It is long past the tme for Rabbis and other Jewish leaders accept the idea the stereotypes have a basis in fact and to instruct their people to get off their high horses and accept other Americans as worthy of respect unless proven otherwise.

Anti-gentilism is a fact and I resent it!

American Anti-Semitism
I'll accept Krauthammer's comparison of American and European anti-Semitisim. I have no first hand knowledge of European anti-Semitism. That said, I can confirm, from personal experience, that anti-Semitism, at least latent, exists in the US.

1 more thing that Borat is
stupid

1 more thing
this is the 3rd th columnist that has seen fit to write about borat.

Can we have a borat break?

After you have paid your hard-earned dollars to see this idiocy does anyone out there honestly think that the people who put this together give a perfumed sh*t about your opinion? Even one?

follow the money

P.T. Barnum was right

and one more thing
to the graybeards in the audience who remember the 60s.

Remember Zap comics?

Remember Flakey Foont asking Mr. Natural "What does it all mean"?

Remember Mr. Natural's response?

It applies here.

For every Jewish experience that rubs
the wrong way, there's one like mine. I was raised by my Jewish stepdad, and unconnected with him, I had a bunch of Jewish friends in highschool. I never once detected a superiority complex among the group.

Admittedly, I never worked for any of them, so I know nothing about that. I would guess that my stepdad would favor Jews in the workplace over goyim.

Thanksgiving
I am a Christian and am profoundly thankful for the Jewish presence in the US. I also believe that our success as a country can be in part attributed to the fact that we have been a blessing to them, in fulfillment of God's promise.
Christians have a history of doing all kinds of things, good and bad. So do Jews.
Most of all, I am profoundly thankful that God sent His Son, the Jewish Messiah who will come again, to take our sins upon Himself.
Even more than we are worthy of blame, He is worthy of praise.

Borat = Dumb
Charles is absolutely right. Did Borat go to Western Europe to poke fun at Europeans? No, Americans are by nature more open, inviting, and friendly. Besides, it was more convenient & easier to run around the US to get cheap laughs at someone else's expense. Movies like Borat are just more evidence of a failing culture. Anyone who pays to see this crap is to blame.

Borat a Wahhabi Ploy???
I have yet to see Borat. I imagine I will see it soon, find it quite amusing, and be disgusted with myself for being amused.

Although I have not yet seen the movie, I have read quite a bit about the movie, how it was made, and how folks duped by Cohen into participating feel about the movie and how they were deceived. While I believe the discussion here has been good about the absurdity of Cohen taking aim at American anti-Semitism versus the much more virulent anti-Semitism found in almost all other parts of the world, I don't think that is the most significant reason to lambast this movie and its maker. This is not to say I don't believe there is no anti-Semitism in America - there most certainly is. My circle of acquaintances contains as many, if not more, Jews than Christians, therefore I see it quite often. Pretty much as often as I see anti-Christian bigotry from Jews. People will be people; bigotry is shared by all religions and all peoples.

What I find so distressful about this movie is my certainty that it will backfire. I doubt that many, if any, will watch this movie and say, "Wow! I should stop being anti-Semitic!" Those who are mildly anti-Semitic will not recognize themselves, those who are happily anti-Semitic won't be phased. Although I have known hundreds, perhaps thousands of Jews, I have yet to meet a single one who matched the "ugly-Jew" of anti-Semitic folklore. That is to say, I have never met Sacha Baron Cohen.

If the anti-Semites want a poster boy for anti-Semitism, Sacha Baron Cohen is that poster boy. In making this movie Cohen seems to have aped all the ugliest myths about Jews ... it almost makes me wonder, is he really a Jew, or is he a false-flag Jew, a Wahhabi trying to discredit Jews?

While few, if any, will give up anti-Semitism as a result of this movie, all across the world there are virulent anti-Semites reveling in this movie, delighted to be able to point to Sacha Baron Cohen as some sort of twisted "proof" that all Jews are similarly dishonest, glorying in deceiving "good solid working people" so that they can humiliate them as Jews line their pockets from the movie proceeds.

Who here doubts that for every one Kazakhstani dissuaded from anti-Semitism that thousands will be pushed into anti-Semitism, and that in America for every one American diverted from anti-Semitism dozens will be diverted towards anti-Semitism.

Me? I think Sacha Baron Cohen is a very sly Wahhabi (or possibly Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels' b*stard son) striking a devious but strong blow for the anti-Semite cause.

FOWG and Warrior
I have to agree with River King. You can tell a jackass by the ears and an anti-Semite by the rant "Jews got what they deserved".

And, since you asked for facts, here's some:

1) For every Jew in politburo, I can give you 3 non-Jews of hand (even more with some research). For example - Yagoda's boss is Yezhov, pure Russian. He was succeeded by Beria, pure Georgian (a small nation in the Caucasis Mountains, no relation to the beautiful southern US state). And the whole country was ruled by another Georgian, Joseph Stalin. Prior to him, it was ruled by a Russian, Vladimir Lenin.

2) Warrior mentioned Kaganovich (pure Jew), one of two perpetrators of genocide in Ukraine. For some reason, he avoided his partner-in-crime, Nikita Khrushev (pure Russian). Kaganovich's wife, a Jew, was sent to GULAG. How did the Jewish lobby allow it? Maybe, it did not exist at all, there was just one iron will of Stalin?

3) KGB, which was originally called TcK, was founded by a pure Polish - Dzerzhinsky.

4) Trotsky - do you know what happened to him? He was kicked out of Soviet Union and later killed in Mexico. Some ruler.

5) Stalin wifes - sorry, buddy, wrong again. There were only 2 of them, NONE of them Jewish.

6) Stalin's daughter - can't remember the number of her husbands, but I think it was 2. Don't know about their ethnicity. But I do know that her first boyfrend, a Jew, was sent to GULAG.

7) GULAG and who got sent there: I have a friend, who is half-Jewish half-Russian. She is from Soviet Union (like me). 2 of her Jewish relatives spent 19 years in GULAG. Each. Arrested and convicted in 1937, released in 1956. None of her Russian relatives went to GULAG, even though her great-grandfather was an arictocrat.

8) I have met some really nasty Jews. I have also met some really nice Jews. And some real nasty and really nice people from other backgrounds. It's just for anti-Semites, like FOWG and Warrior, when they see a Jewish scum, they immediately say: "that's because he is Jewish". If they see a decent Jew, they treat him as an exception from the general "Jews are bad" rule.

9) One last point - Borat. In my opinion, a big scum. He says, he is concerned about Holocaust. But it did not start with anti-Semitism or toleration of it. Anit-Semitism existed and thrived in Europe for the last thousand years. Holocaust started, when it became acceptable to kill a human being for nothing more than his ethnicity. The preparation for it began in early 1930s, when German MSM started presenting Jews as less than humans, spreading disgusting lies.

And that's exactly what Mr. Cohen is doing. He has picked a safe nation for slander - Kazahstan is a moderate country, one of the most stable and economically successful in the former Soviet Union.

You can tell any lies about them: that they prostitute their women, drink animal urine, etc. If he tried to tell something of the kind about Pakistanis, how long do you think he would live? And a lot of Pakistanis are quite anti-Semitic, some of them see no wrong with setting a woman on fire for "insulting the family honor", like running away from abusive husband. It was only recently that Pakistan repealed the law, saying that a rape is not a rape, unless 4 male witnesses say it is? And if there are no such witnesses, than the woman complaining about it admitted adultery and needs to be stoned.

Cohen could have picked an imaginary nation. But no, it's more fun to degrade a real one. After seeing such movie, would you feel bad if you heard that somebody starts killing Kazahs? I doubt it. And if you keep repeating this kind of stuff, that's the way most people would see Kazahstan.

So, my suggestion to anybody who dislikes bigotry - don't go to this movie. Don't support it with your money.

warrior
pro westerner said it all. there is your research.

you look over a field of filth the communists - and find an ethnic Jew here or there, ignore the Russian, or the Ukrainian or Pole, highlight the Jew, and then, by implication, say they got what they deserved.

Implicit is you think all jews are alike, that they hold the same attitudes and goals, and that your cherry picking proves it.

you are the definition of an antisemite, and a disgrace to these pages. You don't belong in any american movement, especially the conservative one. your comments defile these pages.

I am glad you have gotten over your "dislike myself for having such thoughts and feelings, but there IS justification" into your true blue antisemetic rantings. You met some Jews who were decent, you met some who were aragant, so the Rabbis should tell the arrogant ones to get off their high horses. The Jews who were arrogant had it in their culture, according to you, but those who were nice were then not following their culture? what a joad of crap from a deep seated bigot.

When I go out in the world and soe people are nice to me ZI do not credit it to their faith, or vica versa. Each Jew is not an ambassador of Moses, for your consideration, Where you get the right to hate a whole people based on your EXPERIENCE. Talk about arrogant- you are the top. Judge each person as a person, on the basis of the acts,

I was beaten up by people who happened to be of Irish descent when I was young, I was befriended by people of Irish descent as well, I didn't add up their proportions, I have nothing against the Irish, as a matter of fact I love their history and music. I judge each individually, you sick bigot!

not surprising
It is not surprising that Krauthammer would feel the need to take Borat on. After all, what Cohen is supposedly saying (i say supposedly because I don't know that I am convinced he is doing more than making money with in your face comedy) with his character is that red state America still has a lot of thinly buried anti-semitism and tolerance for anti-semitism.

Krauthammer's position for years has been that people who oppose a particular brand of Israeli politics, essentially Israeli neo-conservatism, are really anti-semites, and anyone who supports such policies are the true friends of Israel.

By bringing out evidence that this is nonsense, Borat is in passing making a lot of Krauthammer's past articles look silly. (Of course some of the anti-semetic comments in response to his post make Cohen's point for him and make Krauthammer look rather silly).

On a side point, the Kazakhs are largely muslim. So when you ask when Cohen will do a muslim character or take his schtick to a muslim country, the answer is that he already has. (I should say that he has created at least one. His previous signature character was a rapper named Ali G. I have not seen that show, but based on the name it would not shock me if this is a muslim rapper. So as far as I can tell it is isn't clear that he does any material that does not make fun of muslims). He is not making fun of jews by portraying various groups of non-jews as buffoonish.
