Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The American people bought the media's storyline that from the Bush era's sunset would dawn the Obama age of bipartisan pragmatism and competence. Yet today, American politics is uglier than ever.

The AIG bonus debacle is the latest stomach-turning episode. The political class's bungling of the bailouts has made the scandal not just who knew what when, but who should have known what when, rushing through trillion-dollar spending bills that elected officials—much less the public—hadn't even skimmed. More grotesque than taxpayers funding unseemly bonus packages has been Congress's pitchforked attempt to make up for that misstep. Punitive, 90 percent, retroactive taxes on bonuses are only the beginning of the policy fallout of this political scandal.

Americans gleefully watching the mob attack on AIG executives may soon pay for their schadenfreude. Congress may be coming after you next.

AIG bonuses were the initial target, but lawmakers quickly expanded their sites to any bank that received federal bailout money. Now, the administration is preparing more sweeping reforms of financial sector oversight, which will include limits on executive pay. While the details have not yet been revealed, the New York Times reports that regulations could create pay limits based on company performance and discourage “outsized” bonuses. Financial services companies (including those that haven't received federal bailout funds) will be subject to the new rules, but the administration may not stop there: all publicly traded companies may face new restrictions.

Perhaps you still feel as though you'd never be affected by this kind of government intervention. Yet no one should feel safe. The administration and Congress have already flirted with legislation with the potential to vastly expand the federal role in dictating compensation packages across the economy.

The Paycheck Fairness Act, which passed the House of Representative last year, is one example of how Uncle Sam may soon be at the negotiating table between you and your potential employer. This bill's stated purpose is to root out the so-called “wage gap,” or the differences in wages earned by male and female workers. Never mind that analysis regularly shows that the primary reason that men and women, on average, earn different amounts is because they make very different choices about what kind of, and how much, work to take on. Time and again it's been shown that the claim that women make 77 cents for every man's dollar isn't really comparing apples-to-apples and is a grossly misleading. That doesn't matter to the bill's proponents: They see the employment market as inherently unfair, and believe some jobs pay more because of misplaced priorities and sexism. It's a problem that government can, and should, fix.

The Paycheck Fairness Act would take a first step toward addressing this inequity by tasking the Department of Labor with issuing “guidelines” to give employers a sense of what is considered “fair” pay for different positions. The guidelines wouldn't be mandates (yet) but would be a powerful force for companies that want to stay in government's good graces and avoid potential litigation. Those companies would also have more reason to fear lawsuits since the bill would make employers liable for unintentional, as well as intentional, discrimination, and removes caps on compensatory and punitive damages. Employers would no longer be able to defend differences in pay as based on factors other than sex, such as experience and performance, leaving courts to determine what constitutes a legitimate pay structure.

Given lawmakers' poor handling of recent forays into business management, the public ought to be skeptical about granting government this kind of power. Inevitably politics would affect the perceived value of a given job, with the politically organized and powerful professions trumping those with less clout. The result would be a less flexible job market, shortages in some sectors, oversupply in others, and a less dynamic economy.

Of course, the Paycheck Fairness Act was written before this financial crisis. Now the government has new ways of justifying intervention that goes much further. After all, wouldn't it be an outrage to learn that a company receiving taxpayer money pays male executives more than females (and who really cares about differences in job responsibilities that justify those differences)? And why should taxpayers' interests extend only to bailout money? We should be concerned about the entire stimulus bill—even our entire bloated federal budget. Policymakers can easily make a case that it's their job to ensure that all taxpayer money is being used efficiently and, most important, fairly in just about every sector and every American company.

Sound unAmerican? Of course it does...or at least it did. Yet today's expanding federal government is quickly changing ideas about the proper role of government so that no one is safe from this kind of government meddling.

It's not about YOU
I don't like the "what if it affects you?" routine. Since when did we test the validity and constitutionality of our law by a popular vote of who might be affected?? IT'S UNCONSTITUTIONAL!!

I am grateful to Carrie for pointing this proposed law out to everyone, but unfortunately, it's just the flip side of the ugly populism that is taking the place of what used to be a republic.

Most people will never be accused of murder. Do we scrap murder laws, and then appeal to populist sentiment for their reinstatement, saying, "but what if it happened to you?" How far do you think that would go? What it assumes is that a majority of people will say, "Oh, my gosh, you're right!" But what if they don't? What if they say, "It'll never happen to be, and as for these greedy b@st@rd$, well, it couldn't happen to nicer guys."

NO, what we say is that "this law is unconstitutional. It impermissibly interferes with freedom to contract. It is nowhere in the Constitution's grant of authority to Congress. PERIOD.

Where is the Supreme Court?
In my view, nearly all of these bills and laws being debated or passed by Congress are UNCONSTITUTIONAL! WAKE THE F___ UP AMERICA! Government does not have the power to tell ANYONE how much they can make, how much a company can pay an employee, how much a bonus should be. They also should not be able to decide how much is enough and how much is too much with regard to earnings, compensation or possessions. The Democrats have made a living off playing wealth envy and condemning the rich, even though on average, Democrats in government have more wealth than their Republican counterparts. (There is that ugly hypocracy again). If you allow them to go after those that you think are rich enough to handle it or that you think are greedy and have ben screwing the little guy, those same rules would allow them to go after you too! Don't think it can't happen. Look at the Kelo decision regarding eminent domain and property ownership rights.
You better wake up NOW. Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Frank, and Dodd are irrepairably changing our government into a Marxist state undercontrol of an elite group of annointed ministers and the UN. This is exactly what started the American Revolution in the 1770s. It may take another Revolution to bring us back to what our Founders established. If the Supreme Court does not strike these ludicrous violations of the Constitution down, some of us may have to take matters into our own hands.

If Women Were Paid Less...
...for doing the same job as a man, why would anyone ever hire a man?

Laura61
I have to agree.. the point is one of principle, and ought not be be a narrow consideration of how this might impact 'me' in the future. Though if the more "ego" based line of reasoning gets through to some people who are not astute enough, or interested enough, to understand the Constitutional principles involved; well, we need all the help we can get.

But the point is, we ignore the principles at our peril. And I would take it even further: its not only unconstitutional for the state to act in this capricious manner, it is deeply immortal. The real point of outrage, to me, is this: How -dare- these politicians think they can tell other people what they are allowed to earn, what private companies are allowed to pay, or what contracts may be honored; all without benefit of court? Who are these little Zeuses from Mount Olympus who think that they have some right to deprive citizens of their life, liberty, or property without due process of law?

We are heading for a fully fascistic economy. And I mean that in the technical sense; an economy that nominally respects the idea of private property, but where the 'owners' must depose of the property in a way that is controlled by, and for the sole benefit of, the State or the 'people'.

Some people wrongly believe that the Constitution is just a piece of paper, which should 'live and breathe' so that we can make it "say" whatever we wish it to say. We know better - it is, as it has been, the best defender of our liberty and dignity as free individuals. So it goes beyond disrespect for the actual legal Constitution; we are losing our soul as a nation - the very spirit that was infused into its original drafting. Our children will not know the nation we have known.

Government intervention
It is sad but true; the gummit will be telling you EVRYTHING you have to do, and very soon. America has been gutted and it will only get worse. And once we're so poor we have to live on the gummit dole we won't be able to say no or object. America will become the poor nation to the north(of Mexico and central America).
At least we won't have to worry about illegal immigration; they'll all be here, anyway!

unconstitutional
THAT has not stopped the "lawmakers" in the past. There are so many unconstitutional laws that I think they outnumber real ones.

Controlled By The Left
This entire plot to take control of every asset of our lives was not hatched yesterday. It has been in the works for years and on fast track in the last few weeks.

It is obvious they had plans. No one could tick off one or two NEW plans each day. They were ready for Obama when he came on the scene. The plans are not in our favor.

The left will not be satisfied until they rule us with an iron hand. It is said that 30% are in favor of the government setting a cap on wages. Unbelievable!!

Oops,typo
Every aspect....not asset...well,that ,too.

Write and tell Republicans to keep
saying, *NOOOOOOOOO!!!*

Sen. Reps. defeated card-check and the loss of private balloting in unionizing.

Even the mere 41 of them were enough to stop the union onslaught, where tens of millions have been spent for leg. protecting unions against any choice or disagreement.

Write and say NOOOOOO to the budget, cap and trade, and the theft of everyone's medical records and life's history.

The left never means freedom. The left means starvation in Cuba, running around in pajamas and flipflops in SE Asia, and jail in China.

Write your Dem. reps. and tell them not to stand with Mr. O, who is a radical from the get-go and thinks he can change 200 yesrs' history in the US into a socialist satellite while he is, likely illegally, pres.

Write the Sup. Ct. and encourage them to hear the many cases challenging O's natural born citizenship.

Fight back. Blogging here is all well and fine, but let DC know your feelings.

Send teabags: O is 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, DC 20500; Cong. is House of Representatives, DC 20510; the Sen. is 455 Senate Dirksen Building, DC 20500. Tell them Boston isn't the only place we can have tea parties.

First they came for.........
"First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out--
because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me--
and there was no one left to speak out for me."

"Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler:
"Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler:
The Age of Social Catastrophe"
by Robert Gellately

"This remarkably ambitious book tells the story of the great social and political catastrophe that enveloped Europe between 1914 and 1945. In a period of almost continuous upheaval, society was transformed by two world wars, the Russian Revolution, the Holocaust, and the rise and fall of the Third Reich. Combining a powerful narrative with profound analysis, acclaimed historian Robert Gellately argues that these tragedies are inextricably linked and that to consider them as discrete events is to misunderstand their genesis and character. Central to the catastrophe, of course, were Lenin, Stalin, and Hitler, and this book makes use of recently opened Russian and German sources to explain how these dictators’ pursuit of utopian—and dreadfully flawed—ideals led only to dystopian nightmare.

"In a groundbreaking work, Gellately makes clear that most comparative studies of the Soviet and Nazi dictatorships are undermined by neglecting the key importance of Lenin in the unfolding drama. Rejecting the myth of the “good” Lenin, the book provides a convincing social-historical account of all three dictatorships and carefully documents their similarities and differences. It traces the escalation of conflicts between Communism and Nazism, and particularly of the role of Hitler’s anathema against what he called 'Jewish Bolshevism.' The book shows how the vicious rivalry between Stalin and Hitler led inescapably to a war of annihilation and genocide. The reverberations of this gargantuan struggle are felt everywhere to this day."

take action
Write everyone you know and have them contact their representative. Give them info on the tea parties. They also need to know the facts.
We have given the left free reign. It's time that stopped.
"Evil triumphs when good men do nothing"

I'm sending my teabags tomorrow
to Mr. Obama (I won't call him president),
Mr. Schumer (as big a villain in the bailout mess as anyone),
Mr. Rangel (another tax writer who doesn't pay his own),
Mr. Frank (killer of reform of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae, killer of natural gas storage in MA, and killer of wind farms in MA),
Mr. Reid (land deal scammer of NV),
Ms. Pelosi (Muslim scarf wearer when she s*cks up to tyrants like Assad),
and my own nitwit senators Menendez and Lautenberg, who've both sworn never to allow drilling off NJ's coast (where they is natural gas), altho' they run around in limos like they're royalty.
Monday I will send them from my dead parents as ACORN and shills produce dead voters every election.
Tea party in Ind. Mall in Phila. April 18. Anyone who can go, go while you are still independent and the gov. hasn't taken over your pay and health med. history.

There's a woman
here where I work that was hired two weeks after I was. I was hired for the night shift, while she works days. She has no extra training, experience, or qualifications, yet was hired on at a dollar more an hour than me. Did I mention that I'm a straight white male, and she's a pretty hispanic lesbian? I thought I was supposed to make more than her, seeing as how I'm the man and she's not. Another myth goes up in smoke.

Your Salary
Is between you and your employer. You wouldn't have accepted the pay if you didn't value it more than not working at that location. If you later don't like it, ask for a contract amendment (aka a raise or pomotion) or leave. You do not have any right to getting a government official or union involved to give you what you want, period, no argument, end of story.

Where this will eventually lead is that we will have bureaucrats, because you generating taxable income is important to the function of the economy because you need to work to generate bailout funds, determining the labor mix (gender, sexual preference, race, etc) and handing out pre-determined paychecks for every job in America. Qualifications are no longer important, just find the workplace and paycheck that you personally desire and you'll get it, so long as you fit the quota.

The Government Running Business
The government is incapable of running any aspect of business including setting wages for anyone. We laugh in Nevada because when the IRS siezed the Mustang Ranch (a whore house) they promptly went bankrupt selling sex and booze. Enough said

Financial Terror
When the demoncrats control all monies, will 401K and other savings plans come under Herr Obamas' control??? Pelosi and company have been looking at this for some time. Therefore it is a forgone conclusion that it will happen.
Do the wealthy have 401s or similar plans????
Will federal and local government employees be exempt from said controls???

I suppose that like Social Security, there will be a massive bin full of demoncrat IOU's.

Big Dady
If women are taught how to use their leg muscles by bending their knees and then lifting the heavy object, while they may not equal a man, they come da*m close.

Ask any RN or CNA.

I've heard that it's better to just send the string and tag. The PO may stop the tea bag because of security reasons...anthrax and all that kind of stuff.

Excellent Article, Carrie Lukas!
It is absolutely absurd and scary watching this Administration march towards a fascist set of principals whereby private industires and citizens are subject to iron-fisted Central Control from the State.

Politicians running capitlist industires for votes, instead of Capitalists running capitalist industries for profits, makes no sense at all. "Politically Correct" versus "Profit" is a sure method of killing the golden goose to get eggs. It is as if we have only children in power, working for today's goodies with no regard for tomorrow.

Imagine, the same people, using the same standards for healthcare. After all, if they are paying for it, they get to set the rules! Do you really think that Government supplied healthcare will not come with a cost to freedom?

Already, employers can demand drug tests. Imagine a Government that can demand drug tests of all citizens. As wards of the State, they could do that, just as easily as they can determine paychecks to fat-cats on Wall Steet.

With this Administration, Freedom is over-rated. If a President can call out private citizens for ridicule, causing mob violence and death-threats, how safe are you?

Where Do I Find These Cheap Women?
Holy cow! Great news! Industry can replace all men with women for 23 cents less per hour for the same end?

Hey, how about we split the difference? Come to my factory and I will pay you only 10 cents less and you keep the change? Heck, happy days are here, again! I get rid of the ugly mugs and get a better view at a profit! This is great news! Win - Win for both of us!!!

Somehow, I am guessing, the old saw, "if its too good to be true, it probably isn't true" is at play, here. Obama is a demagogue that enjoys throwing out corrupted truths for political gain and populist support. What a jerk!

Let's not forget
Anyone think our current government structure is free from corruption?

Hand the Congress the right and watch the money flow.

The Congress is making us into a Third world nation. Corruption will be the only way to get things done.

The administration is giving millions to a "community service" agency. Democrats wake up. Take back your government. Who else will Congress decide deserves your tax dollar?

renny . . .
