Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Both the challenges of war and the challenges of politics are challenges of leadership. And both military strategists and political strategists agree that the most basic leadership challenge in both arenas is to know and understand yourself - your strengths and your weaknesses - and to know your opponents and their strengths and weaknesses. While this may seem like basic common sense, it is quite amazing to see how often it is ignored.

The rarity of this sort of strategic wisdom in the public sphere was brought to the fore this week in the political uproar generated by US Republican presidential nominee Senator John McCain's selection of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. McCain's selection of Palin was remarkable because in choosing her from the list of possible candidates, he made a decision that embraced rather than ignored this most basic challenge of leadership.

Given that the universality of the logic that informed McCain's selection of Palin is followed more in the breach than in practice, it is worth analyzing his choice, both for what it tells us about his leadership skills, and about the nature of his domestic opposition. But it is also useful to reflect on his choice of Palin to draw lessons that can be applied more widely by non-leftist political strategists and military strategists throughout the free world.

In the months preceding McCain's announcement of Palin as his running mate, his central challenges as the Republican presidential nominee came into focus. In Senator Barack Obama, McCain faces a young, vigorous and charismatic opponent who has successfully energized his supporters and the powerful US liberal media establishment. Owing to that excitement, Obama has raised unprecedented amounts of campaign contributions. He has also rallied tens of thousands of loyal foot soldiers who have volunteered to serve his campaign. Both the donors and the volunteers are essential for winning voters and bringing them to the ballot boxes on November 4.

Obama's velvet tongue is also a formidable asset. His ability to mesmerize audiences with soaring rhetoric is compared favorably to president John F. Kennedy's eloquence.

Obama's other massive advantage is the liberal media. Since he first launched his primary campaign, the liberal media - which include the major US newspapers, television news networks and two out of three cable news networks - have been actively advocating on his behalf while downplaying his opponents.

But all of these formidable strengths are matched by countervailing vulnerabilities. While Obama's supporters are energized, the drawn-out primary election battle with Sen. Hillary Clinton splintered the Democratic Party base. Whereas most of Clinton's voters will no doubt vote for Obama in the general election, their support is more tenuous in swing states where Obama's cultural cache is less appealing.

And while Obama is a stunning speaker, his record of actual accomplishments is all but nonexistent. The combination of his extraordinary speeches and his ordinary empty resumé engenders a sense that Obama suffers from extreme arrogance.

Then, too, while the media has done its best to project a positive and credible image of Obama, his past political associations with radicals such as Rev. Jeremiah Wright and William Ayres and corrupt influence peddler Tony Rezko call both his patriotism and his honesty into question.

McCain's balance of assets and deficits is almost the polar opposite of Obama's. He has a wealth of leadership experience and demonstrable political accomplishments. His patriotism is massively recognized and respected.

On the other hand, McCain has been unable to generate excitement in his party. His reputation as a maverick has often been earned at the expense of his political base, which is overwhelmingly socially conservative and suspects him of being a closet liberal. This has made fund-raising a challenge, and raised concerns that many conservatives will simply not vote on Election Day.

Moreover, McCain has never distinguished himself as a great communicator. His war wounds, which prevent him from raising his arms above his shoulders, make him appear even older than his 72 years. When compared to the vigorous, handsome 46-year-old Obama, McCain tends to look and sound like an old man.

This age and rhetorical distinction is only magnified by the disparity of media coverage of the two candidates' campaigns. The media have a pronounced and documented tendency to play up McCain's weaknesses and Obama's strengths while downplaying McCain's strengths and Obama's weaknesses.

In light of these realities, McCain's strategic challenge has been on the one hand, to transform Obama's strengths into weaknesses while bringing Obama's actual weaknesses to the public's attention in a persuasive way. On the other hand, McCain needs to unify his own party around his candidacy without alienating independents and Democrats whose votes can be won.

In recent weeks, largely through the well-conceived, satirical use of television ads, McCain sought to meet these basic challenges. By comparing Obama's speech in Berlin to Moses's parting of the Red Sea, he playfully yet effectively drew attention to Obama's arrogance and called the credibility of his rhetorical skill into question. Other ads effectively brought Obama's slim record of actual achievements into view. Still other ads sought to attract disaffected Clinton voters by using her own primary campaign denunciations of Obama's record and radical associations.

Most importantly, in the lead-up to Palin's selection as his running mate, McCain has successfully provoked a public debate about the fairness of the media's support of Obama.

McCain's selection of Palin as his running mate, then, came after he had set the conditions for a strategic assault on Obama by successfully weakening him and discrediting his support base. The surprise entry of a young, accomplished woman with a compelling personal story who was all but unknown to the national audience, placed the Obama campaign and particularly his media supporters in a state of shock. And in their shocked reaction to her selection, the liberal media destroyed their own credibility - not to mention likability - among the general public.

The media claimed that McCain's choice of Palin was ill-conceived for three reasons. First, they argued that the popular Alaska governor has no experience in foreign policy and with only two years in state-wide office, little demonstrable experience in governing. Yet their assertions merely highlighted Obama's own inexperience while amplifying McCain's wealth of experience.

Second, the media insinuated that Palin is unfit for office because she has an infant child with Down's Syndrome. Either she will be a bad mother, or she will be a bad vice president, they claimed. Yet in so arguing, the liberal media merely demonstrated their own hypocrisy. While claiming the mantle of feminism, the media commentators belittled Palin's right to choose - together with her macho, blue collar husband - to serve her country as a mother of a child with special needs. Their harping on her personal family choices angered the vital demographic of middle class working mothers who felt personally insulted by their attacks on Palin.

Finally, of course, there was the media circus generated by Palin's belated announcement that her teenage daughter Bristol is pregnant and engaged to marry her teenage boyfriend. The news of her daughter's pregnancy evoked the ugliest media assault on a teenager in recent memory. Here, too, the media's pillorying of Palin as a lousy mother and her daughter as morally challenged discredited the media while increasing Palin's sympathy with voters shocked by this scurrilous assault on her daughter and her family values.

At the same time as McCain's selection of Palin as his running mate pushed the media over the edge, it profoundly rallied his own Republican base to his side. Palin's opposition to abortion, her membership in the National Rifle Association, her remoteness from Washington, her Pentecostal faith, together with the media attacks on her family gave social conservatives reason to be enthusiastic about the prospect of a McCain presidency.

It bears noting that that the sight of Palin's pregnant daughter appearing happily with her clean-cut fiancé at the Republican Convention on Wednesday served to reinforce the fact that women who are "pro-choice" actually have the choice not to abort unplanned pregnancies. Their presence in the hall demonstrated that embracing the responsibility of parenthood even at an early age can be a source of happiness and personal fulfillment for both fathers and mothers. That image alone no doubt ensured that on Election Day, tens of thousands of volunteers will work to bring voters to the polls for McCain.

Indeed, the value of the image is so enormous that the possibility arises that using his understanding of the media as an adversary and his understanding of his own political base, McCain viewed Bristol Palin's pregnancy as an electoral asset.

In the midst of the maelstrom swirling around her in the days that preceded her address to the Republican Convention, it was noted repeatedly that Palin's performance Wednesday evening would make or break McCain's candidacy. If she failed to present herself in a compelling fashion, she would destroy McCain's chances of election because her failure would serve as an indictment of his judgment. But if she succeeded, she would advance significantly the Republican ticket's chances of winning on November 4.

Many argued that McCain took an unnecessary gamble by placing such an enormous burden on her shoulders. Yet the fact is that McCain no doubt knew precisely what her capabilities are as a speaker. Unlike the media, he claims that he has been watching her political rise for years. He knew that she was capable of rising to the challenge. Far from a gamble, his move was a stroke of brilliance that showed an acute understanding of who Palin is, how he himself is perceived, and what motivates both the media and his own party base.

McCain's undoing of the elite, leftist media provides a universal lesson for contending with the Left. At base, the Left's ideology, whether relating to women's rights, human rights, academic inquiry or war and peace is not universal but tribal. Moreover, when the Left is challenged on any one of its signature issues, because it cannot actually make a case for the universal applicability or even logic of its views, it tends instead to embrace the politics of personal destruction while ignoring the obvious contradictions between its stated beliefs and actual behavior.

Although a necessary component of political warfare against the Left is the ability to expose its hypocrisy, exposing its hypocrisy alone will not bring victory. Leaders and policies capable of supplanting the Leftist elite and their failed ideas are also required. In the case at hand, had Palin been perceived as under-qualified to serve as vice president on Wednesday night, McCain's chances of winning the presidency would have been vastly diminished despite his successful unmasking of the Left's hypocrisy.

McCain's strategic grasp of the requirements for a successful presidential race provide an important lesson for policy-makers and political leaders. To win in politics and war you must be willing to acknowledge both your strengths and your weaknesses, and those of your opponent. It is never easy to look reality in the face. But unless leaders are willing to do so, they will never win. What's more, they will lose.

Balance
Unfortunately, McCain is trying to balance conservatism and socialism. In his speech, he promised to provide community college education for all those who need job training. Then went further and promised to make up part of the difference between one's lost job and a temporary job held until the retraining and the new higher paying job acquisition is complete.

I'm torn. I wasn't going to vote for McCain until Sarah Palin came on the scene. Then after hearing McCains speech, I'm back to not voting for McCain. Help me out here.

McCain Is Unacceptable
Socialism-lite with a side of amnesty.

No thanks.

Palin is a replacement for McCain
As a potential replacement for McCain, it will be like the story of the Roman generals, who when triumphantly parading through Rome after a a great victory, have a slave whispering in their ear "ALL GLORY IS FLEETING".

Sarah Palin's presence is that slave, who hopefully will restrain his excessive liberal urges by reminding him he can be replaced....in a heart-beat.

Can you REALLY imagine the previously disaffected Conservative base warming to Lieberman?

Ms Glick's assessment of McCain's mastery of this particular situation is spot on, Palin knocked Obama off his "great Orator" pedestal in one speech and cemented the election IMHO.

What he believes is right.
Politically, he has never been concerned with the opinions of journalists, pundits, and media in general. Because John McCain truly believes he is acting in America's best interest, these core principles will continue to guide him. No agrees with anyone all the time, but his decisions are unquestionably made with a sense of purpose that exceeds self interest. Sarah Palin's selection will only prove this out and continue to confuse the far left as they struggle to convince us that they actually "walk the walk".

Social Conservatives v Socialism
The chasm between the Obama/Biden socialism (Marx/Engels)ticket is obvious to a Republican social conservative.

Social conservatives believe in promoting traditional moral values and social mores to preserve and improve American society. They have been especially active in taking traditionalist positions on issues involving sexual standards and gender roles.

Social conservatives oppose abortion and gay marriage. They are dubious about affirmative action, arguing it too often turns into quotas. They tend to support a strong military and are opposed to gun control.

Socialism is the politico-economic theory of social organization advocating that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be regulated or owned by the community.

Modern socialism originated in the late nineteenth-century working class political movement. Karl Marx posited that socialism would be achieved via class struggle and a proletarian revolution, it being the transitional stage between capitalism and communism.

Balance
Helping someone get back on their feet temporarily is not socialism at all. If America is to compete in the global economy, we must invest in educating and training our citizens, not simply giving them a handout, which is what the Democrats do, IMHO. If we're training and putting people to work, they've "earned their keep" so to speak. It's like the different between two people standing on the street - one shaking a cup asking for money for nothing vs. someone else holding a sign "will work for food". Republicans ask that they work for food and then feed them.

Ok ...let's wait and see
After watching her (Palin's) speech the other night....I counted three political uppercuts, two political left hooks, and five political kicks to Nobamas cajoles....talk about coming out swinging?...wow....this woman would be a great-commander-in-chief...she takes no prisoners...

After watching McCain's speech....and him thanking God...yes, libs, I said "God" with a capital "G"....the quote that surprised me was McCain said that conservatives have to go back to the basics....and that is so true.....

The next 60 days or so are going to be a media frenzy on both sides...punch and counter-punch....but what is becoming increasingly clear is that the MSM is pretty much finished as a credible entity.

As an independent however, I am still suspicious of his immigration policies....and the defense of our borders. I want that issue to be dealt with on an immediate basis with NO pandering to the Leftists whatsoever...I will wait and see if our military is revamped and SCOTUS judges appointed that represent this nation's principles.

I will wait and see if he can clean out the manure in the old barn that is now D.C.....

OK, Johnny...let's see what you're really made of....put up or shut up...or, step aside and let the pitbull with lipstick lead!

McCain was smart
Before we do any back patting, let's face facts that this is going to be a very difficult election. McCain did what he had to in getting a Veep who sets a postive conservative tone for the Party (hence the reason Rush is calling him McBrilliant and even Mark Levin is happy) and still maintaining his Mavricky centerist stance to try to win over Indies and dissatisfied Dems (who will decide this election).

Now we could just lose and go that route, but does that strategy make sense anymore with Palin in the Veep slot? Jindal doing excellent work in LA? And the chance to actually revigorate and reinvent the GOP. McCain may screw up as President, may make decisions that make you mad, but he is mostly going to get it right and be the transition President for the new generation of conservatives (who will not likely follow him in policy).

This is spot on.
Mccain totally outflanked the dems with his move to put Sarah Palin on the ticket. He caught them unawares and has them in a panic...if they weren't so afraid of her they wouldn't be using these slimy attacks against her.

The party that claims to be for women, has been shown to be a sham, he didn't put clinton on the ticket because she would have shown what a feckless arrogant fool he is.

As much as I don't think she was qualified, he is less so, having to bring biden is to shore up his foreign ploicy creds proved that. The presidents prime job is to protect this country, obama hasn't a clue as to how to do that, Mccain has been practicing for years for that very assignment.

No one since Ike has the qualifications for this office like John Mccain....if you love your kids and grandkids and want them kept as safe as humanly possible, you have no choice BUT Mccain.

After watching ...
Tim Pawlenty speak last night, its pretty clear McCain made the best possible VP choice. Pawlenty was fine, but kinda boring. Sarah Palin is the star McCain and the GOP needed!

Right on
Amen and Amen!

After McCain's Amnesty
You won't have a country to defend.

getting very tiresome

It's becoming something of the consensus even in our party that OK; Hmmm. Palin is actually unqualifed, or under-qualified. Or, leave it to McCain. He'll be Palin's mentor; otherwise the other side is right, she'll fail us in some crucial decision someday.

All of that is ignoring the truth. Obama is never going to be qualified. He's a commie-lib. All his and Biden's "experience" is for the BIRDS!

As for the Veep, they hardly EVER are "qualified" --it's hands-on experience that always brings a vice-president up to snuff. Nobody who's never BEEN the President is ready on "day one." There's always that shake-down cruise awaiting the new president. Whether he came in from running a state government, or from the Senate. --OR ALASKA.

John F. Kennedy was a rookie senator. He barely squeaked in against Nixon; who had been groomed as a vice-president under Eisenhower. Later, Kennedy proved out rather poorly as President. Mind, too-- he had no real crisis other than the Cuban missile thing. Bush had a much tougher baptism of fire in 9-11.

All of them will meet that day of testing. Whether it's Obama or Palin; nothing can really prepare you for the oval office. The BUCK really does stop there!

Genius
By choosing Sarah Palin, McCain made this election a historic vote no matter which party you vote for.

All the people who might have voted for BHO only because he's Black and they want to say they were part of making history, can now vote for either party and say they were part of making history.

It helps that she's the salt of the earth and he's a tower of strength.

A reply to Virginia Peep

His old litmus test got stuck in his throat; now all he does is re-peep it:

"After McCain's Amnesty
You won't have a country to defend."

Let's tell this dufus, it won't be "McCain's amnesty." It shall be AMERICA'S, going through the halls of Congress. And it'll WORK! We'll add up to 9 million new, loyal, tax-paying citizens; a terrific potential gain for this country.

Furthermore, Virgin Peep, get yourself ready for that day--

When America elects her first Hispanic or Mexican-American President! There's nothing to stop him/her.

Myself-- I only want that president to be a CONSERVATIVE Republican Hispanic or Mexican American.

Unless we in the conservative voting majority begin cultivating every Spanish-speaking conservative pretty soon, they'll all remain where they've recently been welcome: the Democrat party! We are STUPID if we don't win over such an important voting bloc. It has to be done!

It won't be done by idiots who keep harping on their white supremacy and daily hate speech. It'll call for good, tolerant and fair-minded Americans of EVERY color & ethnicity to accomplish it. Men and women like John McCain and Sarah Palin! True Americans!

To Virginia Patriot
I only wish that McCain's amnesty would go through. I prayed for it when he wrote it. I supported the nasty comments (from my liberal friends) about President Bush's support of said amnesty.

Your scare tactics about the immigration issue are starting to wear thin people. Obviously, we have a lot of undocumented people in this country. Refusing to pass a bill isn't handling that situation. This partial amnesty is the answer. If the country won't send everyone home - they have to do something so the people are driving with licenses and purchasing car insurance.

Yeah!!!!!

McCain/Palin 08 - The NEW Winning Team

Caroline B. Glick
This is the best summary I have read in a long, long time this politcal season detailing a strategy that will in the end win. I think you hae outlined the key winning strategy details that political pudits will be discussing for years. NICE WORK!

I've thought for...
... some time that McCain is a shrewd political strategist, coming from a hopeless has-been 6 months ago to the spot he's in today. He's most misunderestimated by conservatives.
Now, he should lay out a reform message that steers him between the unloved Republican congress and Dubya- "I know the rascals well enough to kick them out"; and the extremist choice of Obama "Of course, I won't make a point of my opponent being a liberal negro with an Islamic name."

Caroline...
this is one great article! You've put into words very aptly what I've been thinking all week! John McCain is the fighter he professed to be in his speech. This selection was made with foresight and planning...both requirements in a military mind. The libs had completely discounted him as an old has-been...he, on the other hand, will never underestimate his opponent, whether in an election, on the battlefield or in a diplomatic standoff. He is a true leader...and a true American.

Virginia Patriot
Are you really that much of a xenophobe that you think changes to immigration will destroy America? Or perhaps you are one of the thousands of employers currently taking advantage of the status quo - building industry on the backs of the illegals.

Reagan's Amnesty failed because it only treated the symptoms of what is wrong with immigration in America. McCain at least is making an attempt to fix a problem that must be fixed but will require a solution that makes everyone unhappy.

We cannot wish the illegal immigrants away and we cannot continue to allow the abuses of our support systems by the illegals.....and we must level the playing field by taking the illegal labor away from those employers willing to flaunt the law.

McCain is a genius
His pick of Palin shows that deep inside his conervative credentials are a sound. It's time that the executive stand up for any fetus that happens to exist. It's time that we no longer let the liberal media elite rule this country with their marxist nonsense. Obama will hand over the keys to the country to left wing lettuce eating communists who want to teach garbage about evolution. He only wants to make fun of poor people with his elitist ramblings. He's a total snob and way to flashy. That's really mean to the working men and women of this god blessed country.

Excellent Article
McCain is a man of honor and experience. Obama is very far left, a risk we can't take. McCain will always put America first. There is something about Obama that I just don't trust.Palin is a good choice with as much experience as most VPs. We should not get to hung up on the age thing. There are people who are 72 and will live another 20 yrs...and people who today are 40 and won't see tomorrow.
Pray for America that truth and righteousness will prevail.

community colleges
Community colleges are much appreciated by businesses because they provide training in practical skills like accounting, auto or aircraft repair, real estate management, basic English, nurse's aid, dental hygienist, etc., etc.. These days public high school graduates are virtually useless to employers as they are. Academic colleges don't provide such practical skills. So alternatively the employer would have to provide and pay for the training. That's why said employers are enthusiastic about community colleges. For the most part these are paid for by the States out of taxes. Students pay a modest tuition. Is there a Federal role? To a limited exten grants for major eqquipment. You decide whether this is good.

McCain the Batlefield General
Spot on. Obama's grandiosity has naturally caused him to ignore McCain. For some time now McCain has been skirmishing, probing, deploying. And now, as the last week has demonstrated, he has effectively pinned Obama deep behind his own lines.

Dreadnaught, you have reason
You see reality. Thanks!

and Go, Go, Sarah 2012/2016!

And Don't Forget ...
Very good article. Let mejust add one thing to that. It also demonstrates that John McCain can keep a secret. As pointed out by another columnist, it is vital for the president to be able to keep secrets as he will be briefed on matters of national security. John McCain kept his final choice very close to his vest, and the announcement was a big shock to a lot of people, including the media. Contrast this to Obama, who promised that his choice would be sent out via text messages to his supporters first, but the media figured it out and broke the news first. Who would be better at not letting national security information leak out, just based on that? McCain wins again.

very good post, margaret

That's such a good point. Good leaders get things done better by not revealing everything too soon.

It reminds me of a good argument I heard once; against those who demand the Catholic Church ordain women priests.

If we had women priests, think about your confession. God knows a woman never keeps a secret. First she tells her other woman priest pals. Then they relay all (my) sins to their friends --and soon the whole town knows what I confessed in the privacy of a confessional!

It tells us why we'll never have women priests! Lol!

McCain & Strategy, etc
EXCELLENT piece Caroline. I've been remarking to my wife the past 7 days or so the tsunami of %$#@ from the Communist media and their minions underscores the fact they ARE scared out of their wits (sic) of Mrs. Palin and they probably needed a change of "laundry" after McCain announced her last week.

McCain must constantly seek God's help
I hope all conservative political activists read the above columnn and all liberals ignore it. McCain is vastly more intelligent than almost anyone gives him credit for being, or God is working a miracle of guidance for him or both. If he can do his job as president as well as he is running his campaign, he will be a great president, but he will need God's help in enormous power then as he apparently has it now. He must maintain that connection without let up or we all go down the tube, so pray for them both every day if you value all that is good about our nation.

McCain must stay true to principles
I like rivenburg's post. Most people are ignoring God's hand in all this. As He has easily helped put McCain in the likely position of president, He can just as easily take him out "in a heart-beat" thus allowing Sarah to finish out his term if McCain goes liberal or some other goofy on us after the election. I am a theologian, and I see the hand of God here big time, but that cuts both ways where McCain is concerned. What God lifts up, he can also put down...and will if need be.

Not a last minute decision
Yes, it is obvious now that McCain planned this coup very well, and probably made his decision months ago. The brilliant headfakes with Romney, Ridge, and Lieberman were, well, brilliant. Oh no!, we wailed as the media gleefully floated each new rumor, and then, at the end, McCain gave exactly what we wanted and won us over. Finally.

kung fu, political style
Two words: jiu jitsu. McCain has converted all of Obama's strengths into debilitating weaknesses. Obama packs tens of thousands of people into stadiums to hear him speak; pundits shake their heads and say that the race is over, nobody can compete with this sort of phenomenon. McCain then compares Obama to a pop star, and suddenly the "phenomenon" looks like an emotional--and ephemeral--hype, the Latest Fad, Obama's 15 minutes of fame.

By picking Palin, McCain ingeniuosly plays on Obama's weaknesses. How can anyone criticize Palin for lacking experience without at the same time criticizing Obama for the same failing? This is especially true for Democrats who are leery about supporting Obama; Palin gives them a way to act like they support Obama while at the same time undermining him. They can be Good Democrats and attack Palin's lack of foreign policy experience, but by even raising the issue they stealthily stab Obama in the back, whose foreign policy resume is just as thin.

What is even more amazing than all of this is how the Obama campaign is so blind to what's going on. They keep mouthing the platitudes about 8 years of failed policies and George Bush's third term, etc etc ad nauseam--as if they can't imagine that McCain has outfoxed them and that every word they say makes them look mechanical and stupid.

True Grit…Be Informed…

Regardless of which Political Party you prefer, “True Grit” is the answer…be informed. Ask yourself this simple question, “Which Candidates really have “True Grit”? Then seek your answer, but do not look to the mainstream media for your answer. These are troubling times in which we live, so look too History and its troubling times for your answer.

Perfect examples of "True Grit" can be found in people like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, FDR, Winston Churchill, Eisenhower, JFK, MLK, Reagan…to John McCain and Sarah Palin. As a Vietnam Vet, I get chills even now when I remember those times and think about John McCain’s traumatic experience at the hands of the North Vietnamese. It aggravates me that the Democratic Party has tilted so far to the left…I cannot even recognize it as the Party of FDR and JFK. Everyone should understand and deserves to experience what "True Grit" is and what it means to have “True Grit”.

The United States and the next President are going to be faced with some major challenges both domestic and foreign. On the foreign front…a resurgent Russia, an energized China, a global economy with serious problems, to the next chapter of the turmoil in the Middle East and dealing with the Osama bin Ladens of the world. On the domestic front…an energy crisis that spells trouble for all Americans, taxes and spending out of control, legal and illegal immigration that continues to increase, health care and education costs rise as quality is stagnated or declining, a Judicial Branch with self-assumed powers to Legislate, entitlement programs that will bankrupt this country.

What of Mrs. Palin's liabilities? Like McCain, she makes up for, in sheer determination to do the right thing. The intellect and a values system second to none and some good old common sense; there is no decision she or McCain would make, that I could not trust and support; because they have “True Grit”!

Common Sense is not So Common!
This analysis of McCain's strategic thinking is by far one of the best I have read.

Is the "elite" media so stupid that they cannot see beyond their noses. This was a masterful and skillfull check-mate move by McCain which shows his ability to connect the dots between his weakeness and strengths and that of his opponent and more over understand the big picture in the context of where he needs to go next.

This is the mark of a true leader. It's amazing to me that things that are plain common sense the general public, including the media did not get it.

Executive Qualifications
Underqualified?! One might well say that Harry Truman was ubderqualified, and history has proven him to be one of our greatest presidents.

Leadership
Reminds me when Gen. Eisenhower stuck with Gen. Patton when most thought he should be ditched because of his undiplomatic behavior. But Ike stuck with him because he knew George Patton was the right man for the job.

It takes a real leader to understand his or her weaknesses and compensate for them by making the right choices.

...And Obama chose Biden instead of the second best vote getter in his Party....

Mrs. Glick
Who are you and where have you been hiding?

This article indicates an analytical mind and a penchant for penetrating commentary.

I am just not sure that I agree with you that Governor Palin’s selection was entirely the result of Senator McCain’s strategic thinking.

It is very possible that aides and friends provided Senator McCain with a hefty amount of guidance as well as a fair amount of arm twisting so that he didn’t choose another running mate.

That said, yours is an excellent analysis.

How does the VP choice change anything?
Sarah Palin makes inspiring speeches, has a good grasp of the English language, and is a refreshing chnage from the dimwit in the White House who can't seem to get a single sentence out of his mouth without stumbling all over himself.
But John McCain is not Sarah Palin. And he is the guy running for president. Not much more than 12 months ago he and George Bush, Ted Kennedy, Lindsay Graham, and whole bunch of other useless excuses for senators were trying to shove an illegal alien amnesty bill down our throats. Many of you reacted to this event by melting down the switchboard in the senate with your anger. And it didn't pass (It is worth noting that two freshman democrats voted against the bill; Jim Webb of Virginia, and Claire McCaskill of Missouri - so I'm not sure that democratic party affiliation is necessarily bad.)
John McCain has not changed one bit. He has hired open-borders Juan Hernandez as his hispanic outreach guy (he needs an hispanic outreach person?). He was recently quoted on a Sunday morning news show as "I got the message - build the fence first". At the La Raza convention in July he was quoted as saying "When it comes to immigration, it's my top priority today and it will be my top priority tomorrow."
TOP PRIORITY!! - forget about national security, the price of gas, the economy in general.
Unless you expect John McCain to be led around by the nose by Sarah Palin, I cannot see how she makes any difference to his candidacy.
Some other posters are taking heat because they have similar attitudes about Juan McCain. To them I say hang in there...

prayers
For those of you who have faith in God, you know the importance of prayer for the leadership of this country, and the ones who are currently in those offices of responsibility. Vote with the knowledge of what would honor the LORD and the needs of this country to get down on it's knees, and confess their sins to GOD whether at home, in Church or with fellow sinners like themselves, no gossip allowed. Only the heartfelt prayer of a sinner who wants to repent of their sins, and the ones who should be voting for the LORD to lead them in their choice to make on that subject matter. You should know that God will only honor those who will honor HIM . Those who rebel against HIM will pay the price of their rebellion. It is vital that this country have leadership that knows HIM and seeks His Wisdom in all matters. We should pray likewise for those running for office. John McCain, and Sarah Palin, make the choice a bit easier because they at least let you know that they will do their best to protect the family, and keep what is best there. Obama with the liberal left doesn't even speak a straight platform when they are trying to say one thing, and actually do the other. How can you support one who can't speak straight ? The controversy on the 'Jeremiah Wright' issue should have made it clear why there is a problem. It is a dangerous thing to have one who doesn't support life to have an office, that one doesn't care about future voters obviously. In the meantime we should be getting our souls ready for the Return of the LORD. He will come, and for those who don't know Him there won't be an opportunity to make things right when you are already dead. Make that decision while you are still alive !
