If prostitution is the world's oldest profession, then corporate diversity training has to rank as one of the nastiest as well as newest. And it's considerably less honest. At least with a prostitute, a customer usually knows what he's getting in advance. A diversity trainer, on the other hand, is full of surprises -- at least for unsuspecting white employees. And they're not very pleasant surprises at that.

American corporations, contrary to their Far Left-manufactured caricature as bastions of "right-wing Republicans," have become boosters of anti-white racial and ethnic favoritism on a grand scale. Under the guise of "diversity," surely a more soothing and inclusive term than "affirmation action," our nation's largest companies have been busy during the last couple decades revolutionizing their respective organizations. If they remain profitable, that's despite the diversity regime they've forced upon employees, not because of it.

Diversity training and education has become a lucrative racket. At the invitation of their corporate benefactors, the people in this industry, whether working as in-house managers or as outside consultants, see as it as their mission to badger employees, especially white and/or male new hires, into availing themselves of prejudices ostensibly lurking deep within. Anyone doubting that intimidation is the name of the game should read "The Authoritarian Roots of Corporate Diversity Training," a new Special Report published by the National Legal and Policy Center.

Diversity training is a brief, intensive orientation program of lectures, audiovisual materials and role-playing exercises. In tone and substance, sadism rules the day. The training operates on an assumption that employees must be punished for sins not yet committed. CEOs typically openly tout diversity as integral to their respective company cultures. The Chrysler Group's Tom LaSorda is blunt about how he deals with subordinates who fail to promote diversity: "We'll kick their ass. They will be held accountable." Sprint's Gary Forsee, somewhat more benignly, states: "(A)ll Sprint Nextel managers are expected to embrace inclusion and diversity with their teams. This is an attribute of manager quality measured by our performance review process, which can impact bonuses."

Diversity, in the minds of such executives, is a full-time endeavor, something that must be lived, evaluated and reinforced every day, and not just during orientation. A company, wherever possible, must weave the diversity theme into relationships with board members, management, employees, suppliers, and anyone else with whom it does business.

A glossy monthly magazine, DiversityInc, makes sure that every company "gets it." The Newark, N.J.-based periodical each year comes out with a list of the nation's Top 50 Companies for Diversity. It's all about affirmative action and getting the requisite right numbers. "The Top 50 companies," writer Yoji Cole beamed last fall, "average 43 percent people of color in their new hires, while the national average for people of color in the work force is 28 percent. Almost 25 percent of Top 50 companies' managers are people of color, compared to 20 percent of the national work force. All of the Top 50 companies offer domestic-partner benefits for same-sex employees, compared with 49 percent of Fortune 500 companies."

The last thing any CEO or other management personnel wants is bad publicity from DiversityInc. It just might put a hold on career plans.

The Sorcerer's Apprentice for this state of affairs is a retired white elementary school teacher, Jane Elliott. A deceptively influential public figure, Mrs. Elliott got the ball rolling nearly 40 years ago with an exercise now common in schools, corporations, government agencies and other organizations.

On April 5, 1968, the day after Martin Luther King's assassination, she asked her third-grade pupils in tiny Riceville, Iowa, "How do you think it would feel to be a Negro boy or girl?" Pause. "It would be hard to know, wouldn't it, unless we actually experienced discrimination ourselves. Would you like to find out?" A chorus of "Yeahs" went up. She'd clearly planned for this moment.

Without prior parental approval, Elliott proceeded to divide the room up into "blue-eyed" and "brown-eyed" students, proxies for white and black. She subjected "blue-eyed" pupils to a steady stream of verbal abuse, while giving preferential treatment to those who were "brown-eyed," encouraging them as well to taunt their peers. The next school day, she turned the tables -- it was the brown-eyed students' turn to suffer. But she noticed something this time. The blue-eyed students didn't take full advantage of their newfound upper-caste status. Eureka! Here was proof, or so Mrs. Elliott thought, that black underachievement was purely a product of white-dominated constructions of reality. The blue-eyed students had learned to empathize.

About a month later, thanks to student letters to the local paper, her exercise came to attention of Johnny Carson. She accepted his invitation to appear on "The Tonight Show." On the set, she gave a brief demonstration of her exercise. Once back home, she encountered hostility among her fellow teachers. Her children caught quite a few taunts from classmates, too.

The frosty local reaction merely hardened Mrs. Elliott's conviction that white America desperately needed her "training." She continued to push the exercise on her students. ABC-TV took notice, and in 1970 the network aired a documentary, "The Eye of the Storm," showing her in action. Later, in the mid 80s, as she was winding down her teaching career and beginning to apply her reprehensible talents to the corporate sector, PBS television did its own Jane Elliott documentary, "A Class Divided."

The Eighties were the right time to redirect corporate America toward a different path. Civil-rights attorneys, aided by the U.S. Justice Department, were discovering they could rack up huge settlements against companies guilty of allegedly discriminatory behavior. Corporate officials, in turn, saw hiring diversity trainers as a way of protecting their companies from lawsuits.

The industry took off like a rocket, packaged with egalitarian enthusiasm. The early leaders in diversity education, as Ryan O'Donnell noted several years ago, had their origins on the far Left. Marilyn Loden, Elsie Cross, Judith Katz, Mark Chesler, Lillian Roybal Rose, Tom Kochman and Price Cobbs -- all drew inspiration from their experiences in higher education and civil-rights radicalism. The result, not unpredictably, was an upsurge in discrimination and harassment complaints, more than 200 percent during 1991-2002.

A new retailing niche simultaneously emerged. The Jane Elliott training film library now includes such scintillating titles as "Blue-Eyed," "The Angry Eye," "The Stolen Eye," and "The Essential Blue-Eyed." National MultiCultural Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based diversity consultant, aggressively promotes her videos over the Web. So does the Encino, Calif.-based Business Training Media, Inc., which sells "The Essential Blue-Eyed" for $299.99. The company excitedly describes its contents:

Elliott divides a multiracial group of Midwesterners on the basis of eye color and then subjects the blue-eyed members to a withering regime of humiliation and contempt. In just a few hours, we watch grown professionals become distracted and despondent, stumbling over the simplest of commands. People of color in the group express surprise that whites react so quickly to the kind of discrimination they face every day of their lives.

Apparently, there is nothing like "a withering regime of humiliation and contempt" to boost profits. At least that's what many of today's CEOs want to believe.

All of this is rooted in a bitterly anti-white worldview. Here's a sample of Jane Elliott's factually-challenged wisdom in a Web interview circa 1998:

You're all sitting here writing in a language [English] that white people didn't come up with. You're all sitting here writing on paper that white people didn't invent. Most of you are wearing clothes made out of cloth that white people didn't come up with. We stole these ideas from other people. If you're a Christian, you're believing in a philosophy that came to us from people of color.

Move over, Louis Farrakhan, you've got competition from a white woman. That General Electric, ExxonMobil, AT&T and IBM, among other major corporations, have brought her in to personally lead training sessions ought to strike one as alarming. Her standard daily fee, at least as of several years ago, was $6,000.

Every diversity educator in a real sense is ratifying the legacy of Jane Elliott. That includes those who practice their craft abroad. One of her close associates in Great Britain, a black woman named Gillian Neish, has her own consulting operation. "We are committed to anti-racist, anti-oppressive ways of working and to making equity a reality," reads her website, www.neishtraining.com. A disillusioned government diversity specialist recently described the consequences of such rhetoric:

You cannot overestimate the damage to race relations that "diversity awareness" training is causing in this country. It's having the opposite effect to that intended, causing divisions, resentment, and an increase in judgments based on race, where previously such things were actually quite rare. How do I know this? I was involved in putting together a diversity "toolkit" for a government department, and saw first-hand the effect it had as it was rammed down the throats of staff.

Corporate officials point to such training as necessary to the bottom line. For them, diversity awareness "connects" their company with underserved populations. Without it, a firm will be at a competitive global disadvantage with companies flexible enough to reach out.

Many companies thus have created their own diversity departments. The specialists who run them aren't bashful about their motives. Deborah Dagit, executive director of diversity and work environment for Merck & Co., states, "We've been so nationalistic for so long that we don't recognize how we interact in the rest of the world." Company executives are delighted to have such people aboard. A number of years ago, IBM's then-CEO, Louis Gerstner, proudly introduced to his board Ted Childs, the company's new vice president of global workforce diversity, as "the most relentless man I've ever met."

All of this has relevance to immigration debate. Diversity education and evaluation, company officials reason, are a sound approach to accommodating the rising percentage of nonwhites in the U.S. work force. Instrumental to this shift, outside of native-born blacks, has been mass immigration. Our "need" for diversity training in large measure is a product of the 1965 amendments to the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Mass immigration from Third World nations, especially Spanish-speaking countries in the Western Hemisphere, effectively operates as a de facto affirmative-action hiring program, a reality the late Hugh Davis Graham explained in his book, "Collision Course: The Strange Convergence of Affirmative Action and Immigration Policy in America," (Oxford University Press, 2003). Congress made this connection quite explicit back in 1990 when it created the "diversity lottery" visa. The program annually admits up to 50,000 persons to the U.S. originating from nations that have sent no more than 50,000 immigrants over the previous five years. By no coincidence, Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., an affirmative-action enthusiast without peer, led the charge for this piece of legislation.

In this context, it is quite understandable why major corporations have become fanatic about rooting out the tiniest hints of racial-ethnic bias from their respective organizations. It isn't simply that they want to avoid a Justice Department lawsuit. More to the point, they've come to accept the worldview of their Leftist tormentors. Peddling multiculturalism, of which Third World immigration is a variation, can render them as good corporate citizens, while providing a nearly inexhaustible supply of cheap labor.

Until Congress, immigration authorities, and the courts take steps to significantly restrict immigration, corporations will have a never-ending "need" for diversity -- and diversity trainers. Exacerbating ethnic and racial tensions under the pretext of alleviating them is a full-time job. And there are plenty of openings.

"Diversity" training- Puleeze!!!!
I was forced to go to one of those stupid classes.

One of their favorite ploys is to neuter all men who work in corporate America. Explains a lot about corporations!!!

We were shown a film where a male and a female co-workers were on a business trip, and discussing work in the hotel bar.

The man was getting looped and unburdening about his impending divorce, and how lonely he was. Then he confesses to his female co-worker that he has always found her attractive.

Next, the woman suggests that they conduct business in her room "where it is quieter," in spite of the late hour and the inebriated state of her companion.

They go to her room, where the man makes a pass at her, understandably thinking that she has invited him for that purpose.

The woman is inexplicably offended, and files a sexual harrassment claim with the company.

Guess who the seminar leaders said was in the right?

You guessed it.

The stupid woman was right and the unfortunate guy was wrong.

Not according to me!!!

But this is what the activist Left uses to further emasculate the American male.

Why, when this race came to this country after other minorities in smaller #'s do they have the best representation for success in this country?

Hmmm,, I guess all thats left is the small possibility that as a culture the parents and families expect success from the kids. Don't excuse failure (like AL and Jessie). Aren't looking for a handout. They work and study very hard to get ahead.

You only went to one class?? I'm shocked; shocked to find there is a business somewhere that does not take diversity training serious.

Before I retired my company probably averaged one of these classes every two years. They were typically 4 hours long. A minority employee who had spent a week at the corporate home office training facility learning how to teach “diversity” normally taught them.

The sole purpose of these classes is to head off civil suits.

The classes don't head off law suits they just inform workers on how to lie and get someone fired or removed from their job as it had happened to my husband who lost his position as a site supervisor at ESPN a few years ago. It has not caused people to be more appreciative of one another but to look at all the differences and find ways to fault someone to either bring about their own self glorification over someone or to lie about something and have a person they don't like removed.

I also am amazed, this "Carl Horowitz" appears to closely resemble a famous author, patriot, and social critic whose books and articles I have read admiringly over recent years to an uncanny degree. Is it possible Mr. D. horowitz has been forced to change his name to gain access to sites such as this? Whatever, I for one am ecstatic to see his reappearance! As for the diversity training, the sad part is, now people will not reach out to nor share confidences with those of different colors or sex, due to possibility of disagreement, alienation, and potential backlash: better to be thought of as shy then to offend or make uncomfortable. This way we all lose, since among those of competent intelligence and conscience I don't believe bigotry or sexism still exist. Homophobia perhaps, but not bigotry. After all, a behaviour is not something one is born with, is it?

I didn't say that the classes didn't provide methods and opportunities for the unscrupulous to use in advancement and personal attack. I said the purpose of the classes (from a corporate standpoint) is to avoid civil suit. If taken to court by one of these professional race baiting organizations they can point to these classes and say "see how dedicated we are to diversity, we have provided all of these classes at considerable cost. We have promoted x number of minorities to these positions". I used to know one woman who was totally incompetent. She managed to avoid being fired or laid off for decades even though she never successfully completed any project assigned to her. Every time a case was built she would go to the big bosses and assert discrimination in her current work group. She was reassigned numerous times before finally someone wised up.

The diversity classes don't do a lot for the harassment issues. The company I worked for was big on firing people for that long long before it became vogue with the rest of corporate America. In fact, there had probably been more people fired for messing with the women at work than any other reason. And it wasn't because the women complained of harassment. Usually it was because one of the spouses (either male or female) complained because husband/wife was having an affair with coworker. Once the complaint was made one or both were immediately terminated, no questions asked.

I understand the viewpoint that corporations use the classes to protect themselves. I am merely noting that it seems that these classes have only open a can of worms that people use to bate and fish with.
My Husbands case had nothing to do with sexual harassment. It was merely someone who wanted him out of his position and used someone else and their religious beliefs----Jewish---to lie about what he had said. It was upsetting to our family because as Christians we would never discriminate against a person that was Jewish and have many Jewish friends.

I didn't take your comments wrong and I didn't intend for my response to be hostile.

I was just remarking that yes, sometimes people will abuse the system. As a matter of fact, it's a wonder that the system isn't abused more because it is ripe for abuse. It's the age old law of unintended consequences. The Federal Government set out on a course which enabled the lawyers to get paid for litigation in the Civil Rights arena. The courts ruled favorably in most cases even though discrimination coud not be shown. Corporate lawyers counter with "diversity". Dishonest workers use diversity as a crutch to get ahead. In a true world there would be no diversity, no set-asides, and no preferences. Workers would be hired and promoted based strickly on merit.

The effect
From personal experience with this kind of "education" I can honestly say that the training has had the exact opposite effect. In my workplace attitudes changed. Where once the differences were submerged in the need to get the job done and work as a team, now the differences are painfully apparent and clearly delineated. Our "diversity" training destroyed the unity of the teams.

Spending an entire day being insulted for being white pissed off everyone. Being told that working your a** off 60 hours a week and struggling to make ends meet was "white privilege" was the final straw.

Our panel of presenters were a bawling self-admitted lesbian, a mexican, a self-styled black 60s radical, and a professor from the local university. Every one of them was allowed to tell us how much they hated white people. The attitude in the room quickly shifted from a "oh, another meeting" to complete disgust and a very palpable anger.

We were broken up into groups and then our "facilitator" "guided" us through the appropriate responses to the training questions. What was funny was that our facilitator obviously didn't even believe the crap she was told to present to us. The scoring was faked to indicate that everyone bought the BS. The CEO then posted the obviously manipulated scores to indicate we had "successfully" completed our diversity training. No one I spoke to rated the training above a 1.5 on a scale of 1-5 yet the scores were no lower than 3.5 in all categories.

Bottom line, this sort of social manipulation has the opposite effect it was intended to have. Insulting people from the outset of the training through the end of the day did not work. The lame attempt at insulting us into submission and then trying to play on a guilt that very few of us felt did not work. Here is what really happened, anger is what happened! I suspect that anyone who was on the fence about multi-culturalism and diversity came down squarely opposed to both. There has already been a subtle backlash against those whom the "diversity" training was supposed to help.

News flash to all corporations considering this crap! If you want to destroy your teams, insult your people, lower productivity, lose highly qualified individuals, and teach the real bigots how to hide behind this "training", hire a "diversity" trainer.

I have to sit through "diversity" training at least once per year. These "trainings" have done more to galvanize my resolve that liberals are all about keeping people divided because it is lucrative and to simultaneously rewrite their version of history.

The last one I went to began in a dark room with spot light illuminating a huge fat woman in a deep purple mu-mu . "Mu-Mu" "lead" us through a guided imagery , using her magical guided imagery voice saying things like, "Picture...America... Peaceful. Nowww.... picture.... America... when... people... lived... at...one... with ...nature... No...wars... no...fighting... just...peace. Yes, yes. That ...all...ended...when...whire..men...arrived."

The room stirred with agitation, but we were told inadvance that this was mandatory and could lose our jobs is we were found to be opposed to "diversity". This 'training' was linked to our views on diversity/racism itself. Just slightly Marxist. This trainer was paid $3,000.00 for one day.

Much of what is called diversity or multicultural education and training today is simply the theft of what has been produced by those who did not produce it.

I saw this stuff as well, while in the corporate world...a certain minority woman was promoted up the ladder rather that being let go because of incompetance -- because of "diversity". No one was allowed to say that this woman's skills were horribly inadequate, because she was black, so she just got shoved around either laterally or promoted. Unbelievable!

I was a manager of a department, and I was called into HR for "disrespecting" her -- which I never did! I explained myself in a long "rebuttal" of my disciplinary action, and then the bosses decided that I WAS A PROBLEM THAT HAD TO BE DEALT WITH. I wasn't going along with their mind control diversity program, so they ended up hasseling me into quitting.

I now am my own boss with my own home business, and I no longer have to tow the company line. This experience has turned me off of the corporate world forever, but I'm better off for it, and I don't have to cowtow to some jerky boss anymore!

I do wonder, however, how many competent managers have been run off by companies promoting "diversity".

Philosophies are like people
In that they can be accurately judged by the company they keep.

By this standard, "diversity" is simply racism under another name. And that is clearly reflected in the attitudes of its adherents.

Of those listed above, LaSorda from Chrysler is the one I would find the easiest to deal with. He's a schoolyard bully, pure and simple, and thus can be counted on to pick the most brutally-direct, mutton-headed course of action in any situiation, as that does not require actual thought on his part. This makes him highly predictable, and predictable bullies can be sent to the showers relatively easily simply by giving them enough rope to hang themseleves. (In his case, I predict his own tongue- or rather, his own big mouth- will get the job done.)

Forsee from Sprint is the more dangerous one. He is obviously a master of the "pious platitude" method of intimidation, in which he speaks in glittering generalities which can make anything up to and including genocide sound reasonable. ("We're engaged in a realignment of resources intended to diversify our workforce from the standpoint of reduced participation of certain elements that have been over-represented in the past.") With someone who can bury you in contradictory language anywhere, up to and including in court, caution is always advisable. (In other words, get it in writing over his signature.)

As for the architect of it all, Ms. Elliot, her bigotry is clearly exceeded only by her ignorance. While it is true that "white people" didn't invent paper (in fact, historians are still arguing about who did, the Chinese or the Egyptians), cloth as we know it today was very definitely invented in Europe. While flax-based cloth was known in the MidEast (having been invwented by the Sumerians), and silk came from China, most cloth today is cotton-based or synthetic. Both of those were created either in Europe (cotton became common there in the 1500s, as a cheaper alternative to wool after the seeds were brought back from the New World), or right here in the United States (the first modern synthetics were created by DuPont in the 1920s as a cheaper alternative to- you guessed it- silk).

And as for the English language, its origins lie with the Saxon tongue as modified with "loan-words" from the Romance languages (descended from Latin), courtesy of Northern Europe and the British Isles. Hardly the work of "superior" non-European cultures.

What I'd like to know is, how did someone this profoundly ignorant of even basic knowledge acquire teaching credentials in the first place?

I agree with much that has been said here, and have equally been enraged and insulted by silly diversity training programs. But let me ask posters how they think I should have handled the following situation: about thirty years ago when Hank Aaron established a baseball record that surpassed Babe Ruth's (I think I've got that right but am not a baseball expert so forgive any inaccuracies there) I was teaching in a senior high school where about 90% of the kids were white. One day after class when kids were milling around and chitchatting on their way out of the classroom, two boys were standing at my desk, one white and one black. The black boy, a quiet kid and not a trouble-maker, asked me if I had heard about Aaron's new record. His mood was happy and proud. The white boy was angry and then said, "Hank Aaron should have known better than to do that [establish the record] because HE MADE A WHITE MAN LOOK BAD".

Now, when he said that, I saw the black kid's face. It looked as if it had registered a slap. I also happened to know that the white boy's father was an athletic coach at another school, somewhat of a local celebrity.

How should I have handled this situation? (And, let me give some context here by saying that the first rule for any teacher is to maintain an environment that is conducive to learning for all students.)

You should have asked the white child who the adult was that told him to say that. Children do not talkl like that and besides that, the argument at the time wasn't about white/black. It wa about the number of games per season that Hank Aron played vs Babe Ruth.

Diversity Training
Every two years realtors are subjected to "Fair Housing" retraining, as if they'd ever forget that their time could be wasted by government testors who try to find evidence of "steering." And, Heaven forbid if you forgot to offer the black or Hispanic couple a cup of coffee if you had done so for the white couple who preceeded them into your office.

One trainer, who was passionate on the subject, insisted that buyers should not even be allowed to self-select areas in which they preferred to live!

She took pains to remind the black members of our long-suffering group that they were not exempt from government action for steering.

One of the older black men who was getting his license for the first time commented to me as we left, "I don't know if I want to risk being a realtor." No kidding. The grievance collectors are everywhere.

As Solzhenitsyn said in "The Gulug Archipelago," the Soviets had thousands of laws on the books detailing crimes against the state with which to trap unwary citizens -- no one could know them all or avoid breaking them.

Are we just heading to this state, or are we already there?

My suggestion for the white kid would have been to ask him how Babe Ruth could have looked "bad" when he was the first to make over 700 home runs and was head and shoulders above everyone else in Major League Baseball for nearly forty years until anyone even approached his record?

You should have asked him if he believes people still idolize Ruth and hold him up as a baseball great. They still do, even to this day. One man beating the Bambino does not mean he is forgotten. You had a "great teaching moment"- albeit awkward. At times like that, it is useful to invite further dialogue, in this case the dialogue could start with, "That's a curious opinion- that the success of one man can somehow reflect poorly on another. Can you tell me more about why you think that is." From there, you can mediate the discussion of other variables, such as race relations and how those views have come to be shaped. The most crucial element is keeping defenses low and asking leading questions, utilizing reflective listening, and rephrasing what you hear in the most direct translation so the absurdity becomes apparent.

Example: I had a kid come into my office complaining bitterly that someone stole $1200.00 from him at a party over the weekend. I listened for a bit about whose a$$ was going to kicked, blah, blah, blah. My response was "Okay, Jack- let's see. You deal drugs, hang around with others who lie, cheat, and steal on a regular basis. I hear you now demanding honesty and fair play on your behalf. Do you suppose your lifestyle is compatable with your expectations?" Granted, I have a long standing relationship with this kid- but its an example of exposing the incongruity of the belief system and reality- very useful.

The major function of a corp.
A company is established to do one thing, and that is to make a profit for the owner, or a good return for the stock holders. A fact that seems to have been forgoten by modern culture. This is the goal in spite of taxes, unions, local, state and federal laws, that require the hiring and maintaince of unqualified and unwilling employees. Most of the diversity training is just plain silly and non-productive. A good manager knows to treat all employees the same, and build an enviroment around then that allows them to do the very best job possible. The company leaders are just flat scared of any problems that might draw attention in the area or race or sexual harassment, so they bend to the culture.

That's just it, killer
teachable moments are not best handled by making proclamations, nor is improving race relations. The current trend in diversity training is coercive, exploitive, and divisive because it is largely anger/revenge based rather than healing/clarifying based. I have been told my skin isn't dark enough "to know the minority experience"! Where I work, minorities are consistently given preferential treatment and hired over whites- this breeds resentment, as it should.

Some people have a felt need to be victims and dig for entitlements, and these same people now have the keys to the Humvee and are rolling about creating division where it isn't an issue.

Without expressly doing so, Yooper has revealed why the foreclosure rate remains so much higher among "minorities" than among the population in general.

As a real estate salesman, I was encouraged to bend over backwards to "qualify" minority buyers for mortgages, lest the EHO demon come and gobble me up. So, mortgage brokers became coerced into giving loans to people whose credit rating, income, work history or debt ratio should otherwise have disqualified them. A year or two later, they are in foreclosure, and that is blamed on "predatory" lending practices.

If you follow the foreclosure notices in any newspaper, you will see that the newest mortgages are the ones most often in default.


Diversity in the Workplace
A number of years ago (when the diversity nonsense was in its infancy) my mother-in-law received a letter telling her that her small business needed to add some diversity to the workplace. She was told in no uncertain terms that she must hire to reflect the racial population and therefore must hire at least some percentage of minorities. Her business was run from her home. She had one full-time employee who was a long-time family friend and one part-time employee who was her husband. The business was too small to support "diversity", yet she was badgered to include more employees than the business could sustain just to achieve some mythical "balance" found nowhere on earth except in the fevered imaginations of the far Left. Needless to say, she tossed the letter after we all got a good laugh out of it. Too bad corporate America didn't do the same thing.

Follow the money. Any group with "Inc" in its name exists to pursue the profit motive. Acouple of years ago, the ex-mayor of Landing MI tried to bring in a woman reputed to be a leading diversity trainer from DC to conduct a seminar for city employees. I didn't hear if the deal was done, just that some on city council and in the local press raised a stink when they discovered that this "consultant" was charging $20K plus expenses for a one day session and the city govt was, like many, dreadfully short of cash.

Re Classroom Diversity Example
What I actually did was, I called the white boy's father and asked him to handle it. I knew he was also a teacher and would immediately see my position, that no teacher can allow any of his or her students' feelings to be gratuitously hurt by such a remark. The fact that I knew the man was also a local coach of some reputation emboldened me further since the issue at hand had to do with sports. Also, I was working in a school that placed great emphasis on calling parents and involving them---for example we had to call about any unexcused absence from class. So I still think that calling was the right thing to do. If I had had some inkling that Father was a cross-burning nut I would not have involved him and would have asked both boys to meet with me after school for a little chat.

But, back to the subject of this thread, mandatory diversity training: nothing worse. Those workers who are already empathic, decent people don't need it, and those who are already bigoted are just enraged by it.

Although I have to admit that (although seething mad that I had to be there) I learned a few specific and useful things, such as, Asian children are raised to believe it is disrespectful to look a teacher in the eye, while American culture says that not looking a person in the eye is a sign of shiftiness and concealment, so there can be a failure to communicate here if the teacher sees "polite" but perceives it as "shiftiness". That kind of pointer can be really useful.

Back to diversity in the schools, I am often amused by reports that everybody goes ballistic if religion is mentioned because in my experience that isn't true as long as the purpose of the exchange isn't preaching. For years I had the custom---and it became a tradition---in my classes of having a group discussion at our last class before Spring Break, which of course is the season of both Easter and Passover. By the last day before Spring Break the students are half-crazy, having had no major break from work since about January 1, and they don't settle down easily. And since I taught English, which involves speaking and listening appropriately, I used to have the kids move their desks into a circle and ask questions about each other's holiday observances. They had a lot of honest curiosity: Why are jelly beans sold at Easter? What is a Seder? What is Passover about? What is Easter for? What do eggs, lambs, and chicks have to do with Easter? Why do Jewish people eat Matzoth at Passover? Whoever wanted to answer was free to take the question. With varied religious backgrounds and sometimes quite a lot of religious education, somebody always knew what to say. The kids were unfailingly respectful of one another.

Two interesting outcomes: One, I never had the slightest problem keeping classroom order on such occasions. The students were fascinated, asked serious questions, and made very good answers and explanations. Two, more than for anything else, kids remembered this and thanked me for it even years later.

The Spell Is Probably Very Fragile.
I am certain that the vast majority of the leaders of those businesses that accommodate and encourage such destructive and childlike insanity vehemently, in truth, loathe it.

They are simply cowards. Mercenary cowards who would sell their grandmother's soul to keep their trade connected to the mighty sea of 'Dollar Ocean'.

Such practices are, of course, wrong and very unpopular. But, because they are objectively wrong, they are unpopular from a natural and human perspective, not a bureaucratic and political one - and never has there been so great a void between the two.

But the moment that real and objective unpopularity catches up with officialdom and politics - which it inevitably will do eventually - and to a degree that the individual trades and businesses access to their prime sites on the shores of 'Dollar Ocean' are threatened (i.e. when their customers openly and collectively start blacklisting those pitiful enterprises that continue to worship at the pseudo altar of 'diversity') - those same shallow and cowardly business leaders will switch hymn books without a qualm or question.

At the moment the entire insanity of it all is motoring along , unhindered, fuelled by the derv of fear, suspicion and self preservation.

It just needs the voice of one powerful and brave person, or the collective influence of a group of people (namely, customers) to say 'no more' - backed up by a threat of decisive and meaningful action - to end what is effectively a vicious circle in which people are being forced to chase their own backsides in a fit of paranoid frenzy.

And ss far as the collective voice is concerned (which would probably be the most effective), I think that it would be far easier than many people would imagine. We live in an age of mass communication - well, communicate.

If you know any black people older than about sixty years of age, ask them what the employment situation used to be before Civil Rights. It was not unusual then for a black person who had achieved a college degree to have to accept menial work because hiring policies at so many companies were racially restricted. What should happen then?

Maybe you've heard this line from an old song: "If you're white, you're all right; if you're brown, stick around; but if you're black, brother, get back, get back, get back."

The Civil Rights movement happened for a reason.

Thank you Mr Horowitz for writing about what many/most white Americans know in their hearts is true. However they have been browbeat or intimidated to the point of submission and even the willingness to let it go unchallenged. How dangerous for our children and posterity that many white Americans have become sniveling, weak willed, non protectors of our duty, ourselves and families. It is sometimes very hard to believe we come from the men who are forefathers were. We are being sold down the river all for profit, ultimately destruction of America as we know it and a more easily malleable and controllable populous. Why is it that the lady owner surmisses they might steal? Do Black housekeepers steal more often than say others? Why can't you also make this example to everyone out there regarding ASIAN women? Why are they not in your example of a race that is being discriminated against?

When you ask yourself a few questions regarding how society views different races it becomes quite clear that when you refer to the CIVIL RIGHTS movement your referring to some in the BLACK community, Al, Jessie.. these folks are nothing but paid race hustlers.

Time for an end to pervasive white guilt
Diversity training is often nothing more than indoctrination in the Left's one-world, egalitarian, no-borders, utopia where everyone is equal, except whites. Too often, these "training" sessions are mandatory, but you may be surprised to learn that many companies truly have no power to affect your employment status if you refuse to attend. It's a bluff, and too many people don't call it.

A year ago I was teaching at a high school with a high percentage of black students. Someone within the administration thought it would be a fine idea to invite author and lecturer Dr. Jawanza Kunjufu to our campus to speak to the staff. I won't go into large detail about what he's espoused in his publications, only to say that it's usually very negative toward European culture and somewhat so toward whites in general. Feel free to do your own research. Anyway, I sat in the auditorium for approximately twenty minutes while he doled out a healthy dose of condemnation and guilt to the white staff members while reminding us that we were irrevocably harming our black students each day because of our inherent racial bias. On a table before him were samples of his books we staff members could purchase. Titles included: Countering the Conspiracy to Destroy Black Boys Vols. 1-4, The Mis-Education of the Negro, Black Students and Middle Class Teachers (the teacher on the cover is white, and of course, cannot relate to her black students per Kunjufu's thesis), and Hip Hop Street Curriculum: Keeping It Real. I can't make this stuff up, folks.

I'm not sure how long the presentation lasted, because I beat a hasty retreat soon after I was told I was benefitting from a lifetime of "white privilege," even though I've had to compete and produce quantifiable results for everything I've ever enjoyed or attained.

What the good Dr. Kunjufu (and others like him) don't realize or don't care to know is that, like many other whites, I have been denied opportunities because of my race and gender. (We white males are the favorite target for discrimination now, as you well know). I received zero, count 'em, ZERO college scholarships after I had applied for dozens of them, though I had graduated third in my high school class and had honors heaped upon me, both athletic and academic. Minority students several grade points behind me won the scholarship lottery. I went on to graduate, they did not. When I applied for a couple of jobs with the city years ago, I was told to my face that a female, preferably a black female, was who they were looking for, but that I was more than qualified for the job. Later, when I asked to teach an Advanced Placement English course I had my eyes on during the days of my first teaching position, I was told that the teacher needed to be one of color, since so much trouble was taken to "enroll" (see "enlist") students of color in this artificially created class. (The academic dean had to beg and plead for them to enroll in the Advanced Placement program so that the racial percentages didn't reflect too large a white population). I eventually got that job, but only because the black teacher didn't have adequate knowledge of the literature covered in the course! More "diversity is our strength" nonesense in action.

This garbage spans generations, too. My father was passed over for a supervisory position at Eastman Chemical Company after nearly 25 years of service in deference to a much younger black man with fewer than ten years with the company. After my father retired early a couple of years later, largely out of disgust with the company and the direction it had taken, he learned that the department he had formerly worked in had been so mismanaged that corporate people from Kingston, TN had to be called in to fix the mess that "diversity" had caused. However, the black foreman was not fired, but gently reassigned to another department.

So, I walked out of the presentation that day in the auditorium despite prior warnings that attendance was mandatory. Nothing was ever said or done by the administration to those of us who departed early in protest. In addition, our very left-leaning newspaper reported that the staff benefitted from the wisdom and insight of the good Doctor, despite the education reporter being there to see the small group of white staff members, including yours truly, rise and leave angrily after being told we were the cause of the ruin of so many blacks. Why screw up a a good story with facts and relevant details, right?

Ethnic v "Cultural" Diversity
I have no problem with “Ethnic Diversity”. It is what we are: An “Ethnically” diverse nation. It’s “Cultural Diversity” that I detest, as it assumes that as a nation, we’re a Salad Bowl rather than a Melting Pot we were meant to be. It divides and is slowly destroying us. It insures that those who immigrate, whether legally or not, will not assimilate. This includes numerous cultures such as recently arrived Latinos in LA, waving Mexican flags at rallies supporting Illegal Aliens, to 4th generation Hassidic Jews in Brooklyn, who refuse to serve their country in the military for “religious” reasons. These are just a few examples of groups who insist on remaining “Culturally Diverse”, and unwilling to assimilate and become part of AMERICAN CULTURE. As such, America is be better off without them. If America was truly CULTURALLY ASSIMILATED, so called Corporate "Diversity Training" would cease to be the problem it’s become.

Diversity or reeducation camps
I have been through these reeducation camps as a condition of my employment. These classes cause the law suits and discrimination complaints. It is time for white people to stand up and say no more communist indoctrination. Otherwise we are giving up our constitutional rights to equal treatment under the law not to mention a fair shot at promotion and upward mobility.

It must be thirty years or so now since the DC public schools (or somebody, I swear I don't know the details) put out a Dick & Jane type reader that was supposed to appeal to inner city kids since the blond children in Dick & Jane genre books were unrelated to their experience and the theory was that they would learn to read more easily from materials close to what they knew. I don't know about a religion of multiculturalism and diversity. I do know that our nation is a diverse society and always has been. That would be why we wear green on St Patrick's Day and eat spaghetti. I don't see how you can get away from diversity in the United States of America. Isn't it better if we get along pleasantly together?

I am not sure you know the meaning of civil rights in your example with respect to hiring practices.

Civil rights in its original meaning means that people are to be treated equally before the law. With respect to employment it meant that govt jobs are to be done on merit and race to irrelevant.

It does not mean or should not mean that one has to date, have sex with or hire someone of diverse backgrounds.

Employers are to make a buck which entails providing goods and services to those who want to buy them. It should be nobody's business if they want to discriminate on the basis of whatever.

No one has perfect information. Hence, there will always be prejudice based on statisical information and gossip. For example, have heard from many people including black authors such as Sowell that medical schools lower standards for blacks and graduate unqualified blacks, I would not choose a black doctor unless I had an FBI report on him. It is like taking your umbrella when it is cloudy; it does not always rain, but why take chances. Hence, employers are entitled to their prejudices because they do not have the time to do an FBI check on each employee; and like the umbrella on a cloudy day, they make a statisical decision.

The question becomes who should make the decision on who you hire: The govt bureaucrat who could care less about your business or the employer. The govt does not have to pay the price of wrong decisions; the employer has to and his business and other employess have to pay the price.

And if the employer discriminates, others dont and will benefit from getting those good minority employees who enhance their business at the expense of the employer who discriminates and eventually he will learn his lesson.

Where does impinging on private behavior stop? Why not force boys or girls to choose a date or romantic parnter who they consider ugly and boring so prospective partners don't feel bad. Let us say you must have ten dates with such a person. After all, it is only time.

I wonder if anyone's ever done a reliable scientific study to see if "diversity training" ever accomplished anything. Besides lining the pockets of self-proclaimed diversity specialists.

That is just not true. To suggest the "diversity" of Europeans i.e. Italians, Irish, Spaniards, English etc is the same as Diversity of Africans, Chinese and Hispanics is disingenuous if not an outright lie. Up until the late 1950's America was almost 90% white with the overwhelming majority of that makeup European. Such as in Western culture. Only since the 1965 Teddy K immigration change and the Marxist push of multiculturalism and "diversity is a strength" mantra have we been inundated and faced with massive amounts of totally radically different cultures and ideas of society. As we are seeing it does not work and continuing to try and cram the square peg in the round hole will ultimately lead to destruction of our country with civil unrest & possible war as it tears at the very social fabric that indeed made us strong. As it is now, like the article suggest, much of this false society is only accomplished by browbeating, force of gun(law) and fear of losing ones livelihood. Not exactly Liberty loving traits. Muslims don't want to be American. They want to be Muslim and live in America. Likewise most Hispanics particularly Mexicans don't want to be American. They want to be Mexican living in America there is a very big difference. You multiculturalist not only suggest we must neuter our own culture but willing drink the koolaid of destruction. If Mexicans have a right to Mexico and a Mexican culture and Japanese have a right to Japan and a Japanese culture etc then we Americans also have the same right and not some damn multicultural morass. And yes "Multiculturalism" and "diversity" has turned into the new religion. Most proponents of this movement are as bad as any religious zealots I have ever seen.

I am not quite sure who we are talking about here when we use the word "diversity"---I see references to Muslims and Hispanics but other posts seem to be limiting their meaning to black Americans. So I'm not entirely sure about the rules of the game here. Whatever. You mention being concerned about going to a doctor who is (I think you mean) a black American who went to an American medical school since, you say, Thomas Sowell says medical schools have lower standards for blacks. I don't know that to be true, but let's suppose it is.

I just wanted to pose this interesting side note. This spring and early summer my husband was in the hospital twice, was in the Emergency Room, was twice on Intensive Care, and had surgery so we had a lot of exposure to many different doctors. This was at a major medical center. What struck me (and what has struck me on other similar occasions) is how many doctors are now foreign or of foreign extraction. I would estimate that at least half of the various doctors we saw were not Anglo. Some spoke perfect American English and appeared either to have been born here or have come here at a very early age because if you closed your eyes and listened to them talk you would not have known they were of other national extraction. Others had heavy accents and surely hadn't been here long. Some went to American medical schools and some came here to do residencies or fellowships when they had already gotten their MDs in another country. These doctors were from India, the Middle East, Korea, Argentina, Vietnam, China, Eastern Europe, and I don't know where-all, or their parents recently were.

So if you went to the Emergency Room at this hospital, or went in to have surgery, or were on Intensive Care, I am not altogether sure how you would go about getting an FBI report---that is the criterion you mentioned---on every doctor that treated you. And if you refused treatment without an FBI report, I have a feeling you would be sitting in that Emergency Room until your bottom grew roots through the chair.

In any case, assuming you could get that FBI report, it might tell you some things about the doctor's political and personal affiliations but I don't understand how it would clarify his competence as a physician. Ditto if the doc were an American black guy who went to medical school, say, at the University of Wisconsin---how would an FBI report tell you whether or not he was a good doctor? Suppose the doctor in question is farther along in his career and you also know where he did his residency or residencies---does Sowell also say that lower standards obtain for black residents?

So I don't understand what you are saying. But it sounds kind of racist, something like "A black doctor can't possibly be any good no matter where he trained because he was held to a lower standard, just because he was black."


Been there...
I had to attend diversity training about three times while working for a government agency. As part of the training minority employees would be encouraged to tell stories of how they had felt discriminated against. Our proper roll was to nod in an understanding way. Without fail, some white guy who hadn't figured out the rules would get up and explain how he had been discriminated against in some way. He would then be subjected to a whithering hale of criticism by the presenters and some of the minority employees. It was explained to us that only whites could be prejudiced, because they held the power in society. This happened every time in some form. We were the problem. You see, this wasn't about diversity, but rather about using minority status to intimidate and gain power. Most of us learned to sit quietly through the day, nodding when appropriate.

It seemed to me that the presenters were the ones who were racist, but saying so would not have served any purpose.

It is not just diversity training thats crept into companies. It is an environment that fosters helplessness and a lck of initiative among otherwise intelligent men, as I've watched middle managers breathlessly utter the word "change" as if it is something new. Simple stupid books like Who MOved My Cheese created a cottage industry of MOC (management of change) consultants, and most companies have VP level managers of change as employees. Goodness children, what if we took that word out of the language? Politicians abuse it, and companies create moronic robots with it.
Other silliness like the "development" of mission statements and all kinds of acronym driven giberish to me creates a pre-school dependency where employees have to make every move fit a template of silliness.
If shareholders really knew the dollars wasted on everything other than making and selling the products, they'd revolt!

While I was recently in Brazil, was e-mailing Pete Hamill (a super novelist [Snow In August among others] and columnist, whose “Piece Works” touched on several racial issues with excellent sensitivity as they apply to the US) and responded to him on the Brazilian situation. Now, I’ve read some of Brazil’s history and have paid a bit of attention to what I’ve observed; I certainly don’t claim to have any or all answers, and I certainly could be mistaken -- but several things seem to stand out, a lot! Brazil imported SIX times as many slaves as the US (sugar cane, the mines, coffee plantations; city and home help) until outlawed in 1888, almost 25 years after Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation. And, while there have been a few “troubled times” in the past, especially in the Northeastern parts of Brazil, generally speaking, blacks seem to be doing very well in Brazil -- Rio, Sao Paulo and the Southern regions especially. The problems today appear to be economic ones, education (or the lack thereof) and “class.” And that transcends color! Whatever problems they’re having don’t seem to be racial, and I’m not aware of any Affirmative Action either. The reason, as I see it, one word – assimilation. Intermarriage or mixed marriages? There’s lots of that. BUT, blacks in Brazil aren’t blacks, they’re Brazilians – they’ve assimilated! Can’t overemphasize that. And I don’t even know whether the word “reparations” is in their dictionary – it’s certainly nothing you’re likely to hear in Rio. They may have “quotas” in hiring, but they deal with numbers of people, not the color of their skin. But again, that magic word is assimilation – and I don’t have the vaguest idea how to import that concept to the US from Brazil.

So far as those in those hallow'd "Diversity" positions, seems like it's more a case of hiring the otherwise unemployable and "giving them a feel-good sense of worth," ay?

Sorry, didn't mean to ignore you. And I don't know the answer to your question. I guess it's that blacks and Asians are coming from different situations. Blacks have to overcome the stigma of slavery, then a century of lower-class status after Emancipation, then the kind of prejudice they run into nowadays, like Thomas Sowell saying that black physicians are given a pass in medical school so they can get through more easily (a poster told us this last night so I guess it's true). Asians came in as immigrants---some 150 years ago to build the railroads, I think, mostly, and of course many later for economic (seeking work) and political (Vietnam, Hong Kong) reasons. So one difference there would be that Asians chose to come here while many blacks did not choose, they were brought, and maybe resentment over that has become acculturated.

Black culture and Asian culture often have different kinds of emphasis. Asians have done very, very well academically---I would imagine, not only better (statistically---I am generalizing here) than blacks but better than American whites. When I taught high school 30 years ago it wasn't unusual to have an Asian kid come to the United States speaking no English and three years later would be doing Honors work in school. I think their parents are on them quite a bit and the culture is really loaded with teaching responsibility to others ("I must do well or my parents will be dishonored"). While black kids often get no such message, and white kids often think high school is for party time---parents of kids I taught verbalized verbalized this to the teachers, eg "Don't give him so much homework because high school is for having a good time"---no Asian parent I ever met would have said that. Again, I am generalizing in order to paint a picture in broad strokes.

But all of this is obvious to both of us, so what's your post really about? Because it feels to me like an attempt to get some racist talk going against blacks. Am I right about that?

According to Wikipedia, Thomas Sowell got his doctorate (Economics) at the University of Chicago in 1968. It would have been about ten years before that when a black man of our acquaintance spoke with Dean Ceithaml at the University of Chicago about admission to the School of Medicine. He was told that it would be better if that man applied to Howard or Meherry (both black schools of medicine). I know this to be true. Does that sound to you like a medical school that was watering down curriculum to make an easy passage for black students? And, for one thing, up until 1960 that I personally know of, the U of C had accepted only one black medical student and he already had a doctorate in Physiology or Anatomy, something like that, a medical school subject, but this guy was the ONLY black student in the medical school up to 1960 and with a previous doctorate he was highly unlikely to need to have his way made easy. As I recall he was accepted in the last few years of the 1950's.

Possibly you misunderstood Sowell. He might have been speaking of black medical schools per se; for example Howard has been known to cut academic corners. It was maybe in the early seventies when a number of Howard dental students failed the licensure exam and later protested, appealing "prejudice"; this was in the Washington Post at the time, also that a Howard medical school class had failed to cover the entire intended syllabus but the end of the semester.

So that your problem (as you state it) would lie not in getting an FBI report on each black doctor, but in avoiding graduates of schools that don't adhere to stringent educational standards.

My comments on the Success of ASIANS is to display the absolute useless NATURE of Race based Programs..(Diversity training, Affirmative Action, etcc....)

If the Asians (being a minority) are more successful than all other races (including white) then how can race be a factor in discrimination and not achieving success..(all race based programs, AL Sharpton, Jessie, NAACP, EEOC, Democratic Programs etc.. all rely on this premise)

You miss the whole point. We base decisions on the knowledge we have; knowledge is not perfect; hence, we make probablistic decisions.

So, if someone hears about affirmative action leading to lowered standards for medical school and medical school graduation. Hence, until proven otherwise an intelligent person will play the odds based on his imperfect knowledge. My point is that we are not capable of getting an FBI report on every transaction we make.

To call this racist in the sense that we want to lynch the person or take away his rights is nonsense.

Take a bad neighborhood that you know of. Do you want to walk there 3 in the morning. Not everyone who lives there will be mugg you; but a greater percentage will mugg you than in a good neibhorhood. Many minorities populate bad neihborhoods. So your avoiding such based on some higher probability of getting mugged does not make you racist.

The same reasoning applies to choosing a doctor. We are all limited in the informatoin we have and gossip and what we read in the papers etc inlfuence our decisions.

By the way Sowell was referring to good medical schools who lower their standards for blacks and other minorities under the white guilt of affirmative action instead of merit. IT does not mean all black doctors are inferior. IT is just a probability thing.
