Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?


A statue of Ronald Reagan was unveiled last week in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda at a time when many Republicans, and even some conservatives, think Reagan's ideas are passe. Before moving on, Republicans, and those conservatives who don't want to "live in the past," should be asked what better ideas they have to offer.

As the Obama administration and congressional Democrats move quickly with their new power to grab even more power and to build larger, more intrusive and costlier government, they -- and we -- should consider Reagan's thoughts on the "Power of the individual, rather than government power and peace through strength to keep us free." And, "Man is not free unless government is limited." And, "concentrated power has always been the enemy of liberty."

As government acquires the auto industry and seeks to own health care; as it plans to take more money from the productive in order to subsidize the unproductive or less productive; as government evolves from nanny to a cruel and abusive guardian that will rob the individual of incentive and punish those who manage to succeed with crippling regulations and higher taxes, where are the champions of liberty and personal responsibility?

Instead of stories many of us heard as children about people who grew up in difficult circumstances -- alcoholic mother, abusive father, racial discrimination, physical handicaps -- and rose to self-sufficiency, even prosperity, we get messages that say you can't do it on your own and you will never amount to anything unless you place your faith in government.

"You can do it," parents tell their children as they urge them to higher levels of achievement. This sentiment used to be found in popular culture, including feel-good films that inspired people to achieve their ideals. Now we punish the successful and make the pursuit of success more difficult because of strangulating government.

Why must government "fix" health care? Since government does few things well, why aren't better minds than politicians leading the way? We know what works. It isn't collectivism and government bureaucrats telling us what type of health care they will allow us to have, it is individuals employing innovation that will bring transformation. Individuals like the late statistician W. Edwards Deming who developed his System of Profound Knowledge and his 14 Points for Management guidelines, using principles known as "systems thinking," and used them as a consultant to Japanese industry to help several Japanese manufacturers create more efficient workplaces, higher profits and increased productivity. Why aren't more people raising the profile of these proven solutions, which have cut costs and improve d patient care at hospitals that have implemented them?

Some years ago, CBS News correspondent Lesley Stahl reported on a jobs program run out of a Harlem housing project in New York City. These were the hardcore unemployed who either had never had a job, or couldn't hold onto one. All were minorities. The leader asked, "How many think racism is a problem in America?" Every hand went up. He then said, "So what? Your problem isn't racism; your problem is attitude and that's what we're going to change."

He taught them how to dress, how to shake hands and look prospective employers in the eye. Cameras followed one woman to an interview. She got the job and began to cry. She had discovered her value and the power of the individual. Government didn't give her that job; she got it on her own. In fact, government had been sending her checks, which caused her to be more dependent on government.

"There are no constraints on the human mind, no walls around the human spirit, no barriers to our progress except those we ourselves erect," said Ronald Reagan. And, "Government's first duty is to protect the people, not ruin their lives."

As politicians prepare to do things for which government has little experience and even less ability, where are the leaders who will again embrace the power behind Ronald Reagan's thoughts? It was Reagan who said, "Governments tend not to solve problems, only to rearrange them." He warned, "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same."

Government is eroding freedom. It is time to fight, but where are the generals to lead us? Will the public wake up and realize what is being stolen from us before it is gone?

Great column Cal,
And it makes a lot of sense. But as long as people are taught in the public schools that deliberately dumb them down to think they'll always have to depend on the government handout for their existense. We're never going to get them to start depending on themselves.

We need to get rid of the Department of Education and the Teachers Unions that are stifling the people's natural will and drive to succeed.

The democratic party is using money stolen from working people to buy more voting slaves for themselves.

Our young people and our mentally challenged people do not know that they are bein used as slaves. The young will grow up learn and become republicans but the mentally challenged will forever be democrats.

Thinking for themselves is too hard and time consuming so it is more comfortable being someones slave.

start smaller
If the government is going to fix health care, they should start learning on something smaller. Maybe they could fix social security first, or medicare. How about fixing the voter registration office in a small state and allow them to purge the records of dead people, prisoners and people who have moved away.

I wish someone would tell me exactly what is broke with the health care system. We have the best care in the world available to us without a government board playing doctor and deciding who gets what care when. New cures and operating procedures are being made available regularly.

I hope I earn that place in paradise as well but we need strong people in the here and now to stand up and get things in order in the USA. If we don,t, everything we love and cherish about our country will "go to hell in a handbasket".

THAT IS THE QUESTION
How do we get "The One" & his minions to listen to "we the people"? What will it take?

We The People have already spoken. We want a new direction for this country. Conservative were given the chance and their response was to act like drunken radicals.

I'm not sure that Reagan had accepted Jesus as his Saviour, since he was known to have consultations with mediums/soothsayers/astrologers--an act abominable to the Lord (source, LEF retreat message by John Daniel).

For MissAnn, a great deal of prayer is the starting point, especially given the Biblical illiteracy displayed in election of Oblunder (see Proverbs 24:21, which specifically applies, and of which I get reminded on the 24th day of each month since June 2008). (I have another idea as well, but I may need to get a piece of surplus military clothing to implement it)

You are getting the direction "you" wanted. The destruction of America. Under the Republicans, things were stable. Under "your" guy America is volitile - out of control spending, destruction of liberty, socialism on its way, liberty being taken away, higher taxes (for everyone), record job losses & record stock drops. And please spare me the liberal talking points that it's all Bush's fault. At this point that weak argument played out & it's all about Obama. "You" the poeople have spoken and now I speak - God help America because Obama sure isn't.

An Oxymoron for Morons
Reagan was not perfect. IMO he made several mistakes & did things I wish he hadn't. Also, he had an entrenched Demmie House to deal with, & usually a Dem Senate, too. However, his great vision of government in its proper place as the caboose rather than the locomotive of the American economy and society, & esp his belief in the worth, dignity, & ability of the individual people, is timeless & universally applicable. Those things are intrinsic to true conservatism.

IMO if there are indeed real conservatives who think we need to "move on" from Reagan, it would be disagreement on details & specifics, not the basic principles. I fail to see how someone could be a real conservative but reject RR's basics of minimum govmt & individual responsibility. It's almost an oxymoron.

Quite frankly, I believe most alleged "conservatives" who push big government have misappropriated the C-word like the Dems hijacked the noble Jeffersonian word "liberal," just because it sugarcoated their self-interested statism.

As to the Republican Party generally, it is eaten up with statists & careerists. It wasted 2006 & 2008 blowing off the conservative base while pandering to phantom "centrists" IMO simply to keep true mini-gov conservatism off-table at any cost, including losing elections, as they did. If their stupid theories about "moderate" appeal, "bipartisanship," & "centrism" had any validity, McCain would be our PotUS & the GOP'd have 60+% majorities in both houses.

If the GOP & these "conservative leaders," after these repeated harsh lessons, continue on the same course, then they are just selfish careerist statists like the Dems & serve only to obstruct conservatives. Walk out of their holding pen & build a party that will champion conservatism like Reagan did.

Dems say move on from Reagan... How about moving on from Keynesian Economics??? His Ideas are decades old, and simply dont work. FDR tried it, and prolonged the depressions. Carter tried it and caused stagflation. Obama is trying NOTHING NEW.


Look at europe. The Middle class there, is the equivalent of our lower class. Its also funny that Obama want to become Europe. They are now running away from all the socialist policies. They are now seeing that it COSTS to much and doesnt work. In The last election the Labor Party (aka Dems) got CRUSHED.

Achievements:
(*) forced Soviets to halt expansion, by fuelling arms DIRECTLY to Afghanistan's Northern Alliance (belatedly, he had been long hoodwinked by Casey who allowed his personal friendship with Akhtar Rehman to cloud his judgement) which ended in Soviet Union's collapse
(*) Imagine the results if Carter had won in 1980; American hostages (other than those rescued by Ken Taylor) would have probably been judicially-murdered and Carter would have then blathered incoherently to their families. The very fact that Reagan was elected (as they perceived he would have declared war on Iran) forced Iran to release the hostages the same day he was inaugurated
(*) hasted economic recovery of US from doldrums into which Carter had further (than Ford and Nixon) pushed it

Regan's notable failures -- part 2
(*) 1986 scamnesty, for which many potential legal immigrants (such as GC through employment, and spouses of GC holders) are still paying through much delay (a)
(*) Muddle East policies--he sent Marines in half-baked manner (not fully armed) to Beirut (result: Beirut Barracks bombing, 241 dead), and rescued Arafat in 1982 from Beirut to Tunis (result: Achille Lauro hijacking 1985)
(*) implementation of Canada-US Free Trade Deal (transmogrified later to NAFTA) and new visa type WITHOUT training to US Immigration and State Department (specificall Consular) personnel on ramifications (b, c)

(a) I was one of those affected, having approved I-140 in 1997 but unable to proceed any further due to attorney's misfiling of papers as EB-3 rather than EB-2
(b) Proof of non-training of Immigration personnel, I saw at Hartsfield Airport in 1999 (six years into NAFTA) when returning from a trip to London, NOT via Canada
(c) Try explaining to Consular Officers (who are not necessarily NAFTA cognisant at all) about dependent visa for a spouse (relatively "straightforward" if your own primary visa is H1-b--which mine, a TN-1 was not; also I had received the I-140 approval AFTER exhaustion of FY-1998 H1-b quota, so I would not have been able to swap-over the visa to H1-b until October 1998 for FY-1999), especially when your own primary visa has short lifespan (until 2008, TN-1 had 1-year maximum validity; extended to 3-years in 2008)

I know you a Christian as I am. I also was grateful I lived through the Reagan years and admired and loved the man.

But you know people whether in government or not need to be turned to Christ. This one point and that this country has ignored Him has caused, is causing and will continue to bring heartache unimaginable.

You need to go back to your roots in your columns. People will praise you when you praise men they will resent you when you honor God.

Let the praise of men be damned, honor God.

The proof of their turning away from God was most evident last year in the election of Oblunder to POTUS--as there is a Biblical warning about him (due to the central theme of his campaign, "change"--in a way NOT referring to repentance) in Proverbs 24:21.

Obama
Obama has no interest in health care except as a way to control a larger part of the US economy. He can then get another large part of the US labor force on the union dues rolls and use these political jobs to corrupt the voting process and maintain power indefinitely.

If the Supreme Court of the US doesn't start to challenge this gang of political thugs we are all in for a very tough fight.

Government Run Health Care?
If the federal government ends up running health care in this country the way the post office and the railroads have been run, we are in deep trouble.

What am I saying? We are already in deep trouble. Should we laugh or cry?

principles that WORK
Do we throw away the ideas and effective principles of the Greek, or the Romans, or from the Renaissance. No, of course not.

When ideas are true and effective, we embrace them. Reagan embraced great founding principles of individual liberty and limited govt and applied them to our modern day needs.

And it worked. Brilliantly. That's why he is still relevant and why we recall him. What he did WORKED.

Most of the young people in this country, those under 40 (esp. those under 30), haven't got a clue what this country is. They've been brainwashed by their deluded hippy parents and/or the government run schools with their history revisionist text books to believe every word that comes out of Obama's mouth.

I think RR brought a lot of hope and change to the table when “hope and change” was needed. However, I am not a bipartisan kind of guy. I do not believe in the old paradigm of, "two steps forward one step back", an attitude that has prevailed in our Government for the past 50 years. RR brought the conservative values to the table in a time when the status quo of the Great Society was failing miserably. Former men and women with Good Intentions, yet poor ideals. We have been moving in the wrong direction since the Korean Conflict. Now we are about to face our enemy again, but this time it could have atomic consequences. How long will it take America to realize you can't appease your enemy’s? You can integrate oil and vinegar until it desegregates by it’s own nature. It may take a nuclear exchange to bring us to our senses. I hope I'm wrong.
