Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The Republican Party of late has been on a listening tour, asking people for recommendations about what the party should do to revive itself after the last two disastrous election cycles. Former Secretary of State Colin Powell has offered his opinions and in the process may have done more to further divide the party he claims to support.

Appearing last Sunday on CBS's "Face the Nation," Powell said if Republicans "don't reach out more, the party is going to be sitting on a very, very narrow base." Powell said his "model" for this outreach effort is the late Jack Kemp, who he said, "was as conservative as anybody" and "a man who believed in inclusiveness, reaching out to minorities, reaching out to the poor, sharing the wealth."

Kemp did, indeed, believe all those things, but his efforts did not bring enough new voters to the party to make a significant difference. That's because Democrats own "compassion."

A question that host Bob Schieffer should have asked is, "General, you are for more government, abortion and affirmative action. What distinguishes you from Democrats and their positions on these and other issues and if you take the same positions as Democrats, why should people vote Republican?"

Powell said that while he voted for Ronald Reagan twice and the two George Bushes twice, he had also voted for John Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson and Jimmy Carter the first time. But in 1976, Powell's definition of a good Republican, Gerald Ford, ran against Carter. If Powell wanted a Republican who was a practical secularist who seemed unconcerned with big government and who believed that "every state should have a constitutional right to control abortion and ... that such laws need to recognize and provide for exceptional cases," Ford ought to have been his man.

Another question Schieffer should have asked Powell: "Republicans tried your go-along-to-get-along strategy for 40 years in the House of Representatives. They were docile and ready to accept whatever the Democratic majority doled out to them. It was only when Newt Gingrich began contrasting the two parties that Republicans started winning. Aren't you recommending a failed strategy that would again doom Republicans to permanent minority status for the foreseeable future?"

Here's another unasked question: "You think Republicans should go after the Northeast liberal vote and embrace their concerns. But wouldn't that lose them the very Southern vote that has contributed to so many GOP victories in the recent past? How do you win elections when, even if you could win the Northeast, you lose the South?"

Powell was correct when he rebuked Republicans for not living up to their pledge to reduce the size and reach of government. He said what Americans want is not "just slogans, limited government. They want effective government; government that works..." By definition, government that works will be limited because government will not reach into areas in which it has no constitutional business.

Powell had a chance to test his theories by running for president, but in 1995 he announced he would not do so. Powell has never run for elective office. For Republicans to take his advice on how to win elections would be like Powell taking advice from an Army private on battle strategy.

We have two main political parties because there are people who take opposite views on important issues -- from taxes, to the size of government, to abortion to how the Constitution should be read by justices of the Supreme Court, to the best way to defend the country. Candidates win elections by making their case on these issues and persuading a majority of voters that they are right and their opponent is wrong. Parties can't win elections by watering down their positions and accepting into the party those who don't believe in its foundational principles.

Democrats don't accept Powell's doctrine. There are no small government, low taxes, right to life, strict constructionist Democrats in leadership positions in their party.

Powell's doctrine is a prescription for more Republican losses. The GOP has been declared prematurely dead before in 1964, '76, '92 and 2008. It revives when it remembers its principles, not when it abandons them or pretends they no longer matter in the pursuit of a self-defeating "big tent."

Powell had a chance
To support the very sort of party he recommends in John McCain.

He said Rush was destroying the GOP as he voted for the democrat.

I bet Rush at least voted for McCain and not the obama as Powell did.

This man stinks of hypocrisy

Powell , The Black Arlen Specter !

Powell didn't even vote for McCain ,as in McCain-Kennedy,McCain-Lieberman,McCain-Feingold,Gang of 14.

Instead He Voted Black , for An Alinsky Socialist with A Questionable Racist Background.

Get Lost Powell, You Bullcrapper Hypocrite !

another benedict
Powell certainly does resemble Specter in some ways Tim. Why the heck is he still in the spotlight is what I want to know. He's a mix of McCain's daughter and Specter. Shut up and go away coward!

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

While Cheney is a vocal supporter of gay marriage (his only Libertarian position and based on the sexuality of his daughter), Powell drafted "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."

While Cheney is pro-life, Powell is pro-choice even though the African-American has an extraordinarily high abortion rate.

While Cheney believes in lower taxes so that you can have economic freedom, Powell believes that people "want to pay much higher taxes" so that they can get some benefits from the plantation master.

Interestingly, he made that statement on the Sunday before California, just said "No."

While Cheney has been consistent, Powell has been an opportunist.

Powell voted for Carter, then voted for Reagan (for whom he worked), voted for Bush I (worked), voted for Dole (left political life), voted for Bush II (worked), and then voted for Obama.

Powell: Don't tell. Trust us, we will not ask.

Go, fight, win
on the battlefield Mr. Powell. Stay out of dispensing political wisdom. I don't really believe that he has ever gotten his nose back in joint after his speech at the U.N. became questioned due to the absence (not a real one) of WMD. It was never about anyone but him and his reputation.

Do big tents work
We've heard that the Republican's needs a bigger tent, well Notre Dame tried just that when they had President Obama as a speaker. Never mind the cancellations of other speakers. It was more important to have the President there to give a speech then it was for Notre Dame to stand on his principles. Father Jenkins chose to abandon the principles of Notre Dame for one day just for President Obama. If Father Jenkins did it once, he'll do it again and again until Notre Dame has inclusiveness based on the speakers they have. Did Notre Dame suffer because of the decision of Father Jenkins, sure it did. Abandoning principles for one day, one week, one month is tearing apart the foundation in which Notre Dame is based on. Should the Republicans tear apart the party principles just to have a party that resembles the Democrat party. If the Republicans did as Powell suggest, we wouldn't know this country anymore. The Republicans are the line in the sand. Without balance, our society would be titled so far left nothing would be prohibited. No one would be held accountable, no one would bother to ask if this is right or wrong. Powell needs to remember what this country would be like if everyone was like the Democrats. The Democrats tents are big and are getting bigger all the time. It's getting bigger and bigger because it doesn't require principles at all. All it ask, is that you abandon yours.

Mighty Morphin Powell Ranger - I
Republicans want lower taxes and small government and the Democrats want big government with high taxes and lots of goodies, but along comes Colin Powell with this:

"I believe that citizens want to pay much higher taxes so that they could get a few goodies from then government." - Colin Powell

I am trying to figure out where he could have come up with a crackpot idea like that. Seriously, if you were only going to get a few goodies, would you want to pay a lot more in taxes?

Is that what he calls being a moderate Republican or is it someone, who really doesn't understand comprehend reality?

Maybe, it is from his years in the military where government spending and "goodies" live in an alternate universe?

So, what does he want? The GOP got beat up for being "Democrat-Lite" and spending, although the GOP never had a budget deficit of more than $400bn year. Obama's first year budget deficit is going to be, at least, $1.9tn and the Democrats call it "investment." Investment in what?

The GOP can never outspend the Democrats, who are going to bankrupt the country. An interesting point on this is that the interest rate on a 10-year bond jumped up 3% yesterday alone, which is a strong indicator of coming inflation.

Mighty Morphin Powell Ranger - II

And, what would he do about the Supreme Court?

The Democrats warned the GOP yesterday that they wanted Sotomayor on the Court no later than August 1, but Democrats usually Bork (he withdrew), Thomas and Roberts nominees, and take forever. Plus, Schumer said, "I fully expect her to get a good deal of the Republican vote"; even though, no one in the Senate or their staff have read any of her decisions, writings, and speeches.

It always like that. When a Republican does something, the Democrats scream, holler and force him out; however, how many Democrats have had scandals and are still in their positions?

Powell's "Me, too, Republicanism" would guarantee him a permament seat on a back-bench.

The General Who Deserted
Granted Powell may know something about winning wars but a loyal soldier he ain't. Presidents Reagan, Bush Senior, and Bush Junior made his career but he demonstrated his gratitude by voting for a rookie with no executive experience whatsoever. One wonders if as Army chief he would promote a private, without any experience, to general.

The truth is that Powell is more of a politician than an Army officer. He voted for Obama and yells across the chasm between the two Parties, "I'm still a Republican."

Yeah, right! The GOP needs the general like we need a virus. He made a terrible choice and perhaps sometime in the future he will realize that.

Remember MacArthur's admonition: "Old soldiers never die; they just fade away." It's time for Powell to follow MacArthur's advice.

Republican Powell
My guess is that Powell has been a Republican all of his life because early on that was the party that provided him with the opportunities to get where he got. My guess also is that Powell made his intentions known early and then voted for Obama because he would very much have liked to have been given a Cabinet position, perhaps Secretary of Defense. Head of the Pentagon--wouldn't that have been yummy? Or maybe Secretary of State. My guess is that he hoped for a reward from his "brother."There is no question in my mind that race factored into his selection process. That and self-interest

Powell was a mediocre officer
who Reagan apparently liked well enough to groom for higher things, much like Clarence Thomas was. Nothing wrong with that, it's common practice in the Beltway. The difference between the two is that Thomas has a brilliant legal mind and can stand on his own, where Powell is nothing extraordinary, BUT, knew who to kiss up too.

I used to like him, but I now certain that the people who promoted and backed him were the actual brains, like Cheney, for example. Compared to General Myers and Petraeous, Powell is pretty tepid.

As a Republican, Powell makes a good dhimmicrat and he should join with Arlen Specter to sing cume by yahs with the other side. Maybe he's like Goldwater, whose liberal wife "beat" him into submission in his declining years when he started making statements that young Barry never would have uttered.

Just another retired General, trying to be relevant and failing. Maybe he and Weasley Clark could form a club or something and leave politics to the pros.

Well Said
Great article. The only way the GOP will regain it's prominence is to "change" back to it's conservative principles.

If Republicans want to be like Democrats, and they have been acting like them for years, they are doomed to never win another election.

reaching out
The republican party has been reaching out...and grasping at a poor set of values...the party is no longer one of conservative values. If the republican party is to survive, it will need to get back to conservative values that this country was founded upon- most of which originated with the values set forth in the ten commandments.

Powell's vote
All those who castigate Powell for voting for Obama need to step back a bit and realize that he can vote for whomever he chooses. There's not a rule that says you have to vote foe whoever your party slaps on the ballot; I mean how many registered Republicans refused to vote for McCain and either did not vote or voted third party? I may not agree with their vote, but it is just that...THEIR vote to be cast in any manner they wish.

The problem here is that Powell is not in any position to lecture the GOP on anything political. His public career has been one that smacks of political opportunism, and since he's never deigned to actually involve himself in a political campaign, he has no credibility. Having never even run for a political position, never having really stated a concrete position on the issues of the day, where does he get any political credibility? Why should anyone ever listen to his ideas, which are simply the same RINO/DNC ideas that would supposedly help the GOP thrive? He has no personal honor after the Plame affair, and his political thought process is shallow at best. Powell is the very definition of the word "hack" and he proves it more with every public pronouncement.

Democrat Mole
or idiot, you decide.

Just Who is Powell Working for?
Anyone have the thought that perhaps Powell, who does nothing unless it will be beneficial for Powell, might be working for Obama. What better way to neutralize the GOP than to have Powell pander to the RINOs and attack those who are furthering the conservative goals that once made the party a winner? I'm just sayin'

Powell , RIP, h.e.o.s.
No one would even talk to this guy if he was a real Republican.

He is only on TV because he knocks the GOP.

He is supposed to be some spokesperson because he is black, and claims to be a Republican? Get lost man.

Do us a favor, join a country club and play golf everday. Get drunk on scotch afterward and pontificate to anyone who will listen.

Powell Was Wrong
Edamon50, why did Powell feel the need to hold a press conference to announce his very public support of Obama during the election? Obvously it was meant to sway votes. I would not care what he does in the privacy of the voting booth, but I strenuously object to his injurious grandstanding.

I think we should reach out more for the Hispanic vote. Most are hard-working folk with traditional family values. Most are Catholic with strong religious ties. I think most would support a strengthening of immigration laws, but I might be wrong.

Colin Who?
Excuse me, on just what theory is Colin Powell a leader of the Republican Party, with authority to speak to & on behalf of the GOP leaders or membership?

For that matter, on what theory is he a Republican at all, other than the fact his career has been based on the favor of Republican administrations, which he seems not to appreciate?

Even more so than John McCain, his status as "leader" & "spokesperson" has been a popmedia-concocted-&-hyped fiction. The cult of moderateness is just the latest of anticonservative bandwagons on which he has jumped. He's just more static from the noise machine & deserves to be roundly ignored.

Powell
Was not a great general, Swartzkopf was.

Alabama Roadrunner
Agreed re Schwartzkpf v. Powell. My impression of Powell as Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff was that he was basically the Armed Forces' bureaucrat-in-chief, not in any sense a strategist.

Liberal is as Liberal Does

Politics is like a box of chocolates, you jump up a quota prince and you never know what your going to get.

Turncoat
Benedict Arnold was a general also. He became a traitor like Powell is.

As a Vietnam veteran, I respect Powell..
...he lost my respect, however, when I found out he could have saved Scooter Libby by publicly announcing that it was HIS associate, Armitage, who leaked the Plame info to the press. He could have ended the entire stupidity of the investigation.

Powell, the politician, is a waste, to be kind.

A failed doctrine
Conserative principles will save the GOP.It is their failure to stay with these principles is why they are in the minority. They deserted their base.Reach out to the base and get back to conservatism and they shall prevail.

The REAL story behind Powell!!!
This is a MUST read...seriously! http://theblacksphere.blogspot.com/2009/05/colin-powell-pr ison-tale.html

This is one of the most educational, yet satirically funny revelations about Powell on the internet!

Unfortunately
Unfortunately conservative views won't save the Republican party. It will be the incompetence of the Democratic party which is unfortunate because people could actually learn from this horrible situation. Instead people will flock back to the Republican party and both parties will have entrenched their power more because of Obama and company. Look at Washingtonian Republicans response to the Tea Parties. They are more afraid of conservatism than the Democrats because their only real threat is conservatism. National parties and conservatism is antithetical. National parties want more power, their sole purpose is the accumulation of power. They can temporarily alter their course, but they will never seriously adopt conservatism. Why would they? It's suicide.

Powell double-talk
Isn't John McCain the type of Republican Powell thinks the rest of the party should be? But Powell supported Obama instead of McCain!

Let's remind 'the Colon' that the GOP nominated a 'Powell Republican' and Powell supported a far-left Democrat instead.

Powell is for Powell
Powell is a smooth talking blue blood who is really interested in being a good guy for everyone. A pox on Powell.

Powell reminds me
Of this man.
Emperor Norton

Self-proclaimed His Imperial Majesty Emperor Norton I, was a celebrated citizen of San Francisco, California, who in 1859 proclaimed himself "Emperor of these United States"

For Powell and his admirers this is the connection.

As Emperor Norton proclaimed himself "Emperor of these United States" and the people played along with his imaginary world and bowed to him and addressed him as the Emperor, its what Powell is doing calling himself a Republican.

The imaginations of the mind once believed takes on the image from delusions.

Colin Powell is a delusional fool of a man.

Frankly my dear, I don't give.....

I really don't care if Powell wants to drag the GOP right or left.

The GOP blew it. They had their chance. They could have balanced the budget. They could have passed a flat tax, fair tax, consumption tax or whatever would get rid of the IRS.

They could have fixed Social Security. They chickened out.

They could have repealed oppressive Gun laws, They backed down.

They could have fixed immigration laws. They got cold feet.

Leadership means you lead. You come up with a plan and sell your ideas to the american people.

It takes a little work. It takes some time. It takes committment to ideals and principles.

The GOP is not willing to work, spend time, make the committment and live up to your ideals then you might as well be democrats.

Grow government

That's the ticket. We need to try and out democrat the democrats. Out commie the communist. We can have two government worshiping parties who put conservatives in a taxation without representation position. These uppity scum should be put in their place anyway! Let them eat their guns and religion.

The constitution is a wrinkly old peace of paper written by unenlightened white bigots. Everyone knows nobody but politicians and criminals have any rights.

We need government to take over every aspect of our lives. Tell them scum what they can wear and what to eat. Dictate what they watch or listen to. What kind of light bulbs they can use and cars they can drive. We can even choose their doctors and take over raising their children.

Like our beloved Soviet Union, we can hold elections to fool the people into thinking they have a choice, and we can then feather our nest and solidify our power with what was their money.

DC knows best. Let freedom ring(wink wink)...

The GOP did blow it
For myself, I will never believe John McCain won the party selection honestly.

No way did this know RINO get the nod in an honest vote.

Of course the details will not be investigated anymore than all the illegal votes ACORN is responsible for or the tons of illegal money that poured into the obama campaign from all over the world

We do not have honest elections
Any longer.

Our elections are rigged and anyone with a honest bone in their body knows this is the truth

Our elections are rigged and anyone with a honest bone in their body knows this is the truth - TS

===============

So are you saying Obama shouldn't have been elected?

Jo asks:

So are you saying Obama shouldn't have been elected?
========================
No he should not have been elected, or in the very least confirmed without documentation.

He has never been vetted by a single State or the Congress.

Its KNOWN he received ILLEGAL campaign contributions from foreigners and distribution of sums of money through individuals in many different leftist organizations like ACORN.

We all knwo ACORN is rift with FRAUD.
Yet the US Government REFUSED to investigate the votes or the money.

Wake up folks, we have been lied to and its a continual cover-up

talent scout
Sorry to get you going.
I asked - tongue in cheek.

Jo
You did not get me going.

You did ask me a question though.

Don't ask questions of me if you do not want a response

Crossover Vote
There's this: if Colin Powell ran for President, he might get a significant crossover vote. He sounds like a strong, centrist, wise leader. I am a committed Democrat and I think I might very well have voted for him, depending who they ran against him. And I think that might be true of a lot of Democrats. As long as the GOP runs extremists, you will lose masses of votes. And I give Sarah Palin as an example of "extremist". She had no schooling appropriate to the office of President and her TV dismissal of the debate format, substituting a campaign appearance and blowing kisses, showed us that she was unwilling to follow rules and traditions. In her speeches, her specialty seemed to be whipping up resentment and anger, mocking the opposition---not qualities that would lead or bring together the country as a whole.

If you have a big church supper and you serve a mainstream food like meatloaf or fried chicken, more people will come and buy dinner from you. But if your dish is one that has a narrower appeal, no matter how passionate an appeal, like roast opossum or lutefisk or chitterlings, you'll get fewer customers.

Forgive me, Lilly

I must tell you the truth.

You're being a hypocrite. Everything you say about Sarah Palin is hypocritical. You don't hate her on account of your wish to "bring our country together."

All you liars on the left; especially feminists, hate Sarah Palin because she's Pro-Life and a mother of five; and she has courage. She gave birth to her Downs Syndrome son.

This galls all of you in Selfishville. You hate a real WOMAN who believes in God, and stands up for what she believes in. She's ten times a better man than Obama, who now looks distinctly like an empty suit.

HE'S outta here in 2012!

Powell wrong still
No one knows what he espouses on any of the issue, He just goes around wanting a big tent. Maybe the circus would give him one. He is such a clown.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?

Powell admits that he voted for Jimmy Carter. Last time I checked, Carter was a democrat. Powell admits that he voted for Bill Clinton. Last time I checked, Clinton was a democrat. Powell admits that he voted for Barack Obama. Last time I checked, Obama was a democrat.

And Powell claims to be a republican? Are you kidding me? How can you be a republican and vote for democrats? SOMEBODY please explain that.

Here is the truth. Powell is and always has been a democrat. He is a mole who CLAIMS to be a republican, but what is he actually doing? He is causing division and has started name calling in the republican party. He is trying to divide the party. He is bad mouthing those in the party who are conservative saying republicans can't win with them and that conservatives do not represent what the party stands for.

So here we have a man who admits to voting for democrats and who is stirring up trouble within the republican party. How in the hell can anybody really believe this guy is a republican when he si doing EVERYTHING he can to see them defeated and admits to voting for the democrats? GIVE ME A BREAK!!
