Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

LONDON -- There are titled people in Britain and then there are people who consider themselves entitled. The current scandal here is that the entitled are not the growing number receiving benefits from government, but the many members of Parliament whose highly questionable expenses are jaw dropping, even to the most cynical observer.

In a series of front-page stories last week in The Daily Telegraph, members of the majority Labour Party -- including Prime Minister Gordon Brown and several cabinet ministers -- had their expense vouchers published. The newspaper paid an unidentified source for the information, which was due to be released for free this summer.

Ordinarily, one might expect those who have been identified as milking the taxpayers for dubious personal expenses to express shame, or at least embarrassment, but instead the members are unrepentant and fighting back. Given the nature of the expensed items, it is doubtful they will persuade the British public, which continues to struggle financially.

Barbara Follett, the minister of culture, creative industries and tourism, claimed 25,000 pounds in expenses for security because she doesn't feel safe living in the Soho district. Follett's husband is the best-selling novelist and multimillionaire Ken Follett. It apparently didn't occur to her to ask him to pay for her security detail, or move from a neighborhood she regards as unsafe to one in which she feels more secure.

Immigration Minister Phil Woolas expensed women's clothing and toiletries, including tampons and diapers. Parliamentary rules allow expenses only for items that are "exclusively" for the MP's use. Unless the married Woolas is holding something back, it will be difficult for him to explain how tampons are for his personal use.

Members are allowed expenses for second homes. Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling, however, switched his second home designation four times in four years, claiming the second home benefit each time. Darling recently proposed to increase the income tax to 50 percent. Perhaps he needs the money to help underwrite his expenses.

Margaret Moran, a parliamentarian from Luton South, expensed 22,500 pounds of taxpayer money, just days after she switched her second home designation, to repair dry rot at her and her husband's seaside home, a home located 200 miles from her constituency. Dry rot seems to be a useful metaphor for the condition of Parliament.

As if the outrageous expense claims were not enough, what the Telegraph calls "begging letters" from parliamentarians whose expenses were rejected expose the grip the entitlement mentality has on many politicians.

One Labour MP appealed a ruling against him this way: "From a natural justice perspective I feel a justifiable exception would be the fairest manner to deal with the current situation." He wanted a 3,100-pound reimbursement for a 40-inch Sony TV.

Here's another: "I object to your decision not to reimburse me for the costs of purchasing a baby's cot for use in my London home. ... Perhaps you might write to me explaining where my son should sleep next time he visits me in London?" And another: "I would be very grateful if (the expenses) could be paid in the last round of the year on Friday. Otherwise, I might be in line for a divorce!"

Like relatives who overstay their welcome at holiday time, consuming food and drink and soiling your home, politicians in Britain and America come to believe they are entitled to other people's money simply because they win an election. When the relatives leave, the owners usually give the place a good cleaning. That's what Parliament (and Congress) need to do.

The Labour Party might have handed the Conservatives a powerful issue if the conservatives had not also been feeding at the public trough. The Telegraph is following up its stories on Labor with similar reports on the Conservatives. In addition to the second home reimbursements, one Conservative, Cheryl Gillan, the shadow Welsh secretary, claimed an expense for dog food. (She at least promised to reimburse the government). David Cameron, the Conservative Party leader and potential prime minister, (he leads in the polls) apparently escaped embarrassment as his claims have been called "relatively straightforward" by the Telegraph. This might allow him to take on the role of reformer in the coming election campaign.

Conservatives should bring real change to a system that allowed one Labour member to expense the cleaning of his swimming pool. That might be defensible if the member could walk on water.

Any Real Difference?
Between the Parliment of whores on the Thames and the one on the Potomac?

Back to the basics
What we need in this country is a reverting back to the American ideals of liberty, free markets, and personal responsibility.

You HAVE to check out this awesome column I found on that very subject: http://robbymoeller.blogspot.com/2009/05/free-free-markets -part-i.html

Similarities
I am a Brit who has been in he US since the middle of April but I have followed events on line and whilst on the one hand I am not surprised, on the other I am apalled. The plain fact is that in any socialistic society those at the top espouse equality and fairness but it never applies to them. Do you think that in Stalin's Russia uncle joe and his cohorts ate the fare of the Russian Peasant - not likely. Sharing the wealth only applies to the wealth of others NOT themselves. As Margaret Thatcher observed the trouble with socialism is that sooner or later you run out of other peoples money.

In our case we have discovered and exposed what is happening and hopefully David Cameron will clean things up, time will tell. The problem in the US appears to be you already know (Pelosi's private jet, sweetheart deals on mortgages for Dodds, campaign contributions for Franks from Fannie & Freddie, etc. etc. and the Republicans are not exempt, and then of course there is the pork in the "stimulus bill") but it appears you have no-one prepared to clean the place up. Your new President talks a good fight but in this as in much else he appears out of his depth and in thrall to the left wing of the Democratic Party.

Good luck America both countries are going to need lots of good luck.

And
prayers Frank, lots of prayers. My Mom was a Lassie from Lancashire so I have a connection with Britain. Actually on both sides, since my Dad's parents came over seperately as children.
So did my Mom with my grandparents and her siblings. I pray for England often as well as my own country.
Doesn't matter where they are from, seems the parasites gravitate to the free lunch as if because they are elected we owe them.

Read this HILARIOUS blog...
This guy covers all the issues and makes you laugh your head off! The wit and satire makes this a MUST READ! http://theblacksphere.blogspot.com/2009/05/obama-provides- comic-relief.html

HILARIOUS!

R.H.I.P.
Rank Hath Its Privileges.

It is only right that the ruling elites be entitled to the privileges of the treasury. Having to govern millions of slaves is a tremendously tiring endeavor and the pay scale for this job is ridiculously low. We cannot expect to attract the best and brightest to have dominion over us.

The rules of feudalism are quite clear. We stipulate we are unable to live our lives because independent decision making is beyond our meager abilities. We demand that our rulers make the sun shine every day. We demand they feed, clothe, house and cure us, tell us where and how to live, what to own, and who we can hire, fire, promote, demote and with whom we can associate. Our president now has to instruct us on how to cough - on our sleeves, not in our hands.

Shepherding is a tough, thankless task. It is only proper that our overworked shepherds be afforded some occasional perk or surplus from the royal treasury.

Please do not criticize them, because that would displease them and might cause them to withhold their expertise. How would we function without them? Have you thought of what life would be without their wisdom and sage advice? Be very, very careful not to offend them.

Where are the watchdogs in America?
Too bad we can't get our media to do their jobs and reveal the indiscretions of ALL our politicians

responsibility
It is glaringly clear that those with power have lost sight of the axiom of, That with power comes responsibility, and with great power, and even greater responsibility.
At present the only thing that is " owed " to those in power is a hard and swift boot to their posterior.
We Americans have cried, begged, and pleaded with those who hold high office, but alas to no avail. It seams that when we elect one or two new faces who talk a good talk, that as soon as they reach the office for which they have been hired, those who are still entrenched corrupt & convert the "newbies" to the status quo.
Being of the most limited education, { my own fault by the way } it seams to me that there is but one way that we might be able to undue the harm that has befallen us, and that is to have a clean sweep of both houses and all that is now in office. To put into place new restraints to help ensure that we do not fall prey to their likes ever again.

Yet another argument against C. Powell
Business and executive decisions are best made by those whose own money is on the line. Always remember the $320,000 for the pretty picture of NY.

The Monarchy must take the lead
What Britain needs, quite simply, is for the Monarchy to declare that all welfarism and Third World immigration -- they are linked -- are hereby null and void. It is time for the Queen to be truly powerful.

Rule Britannia!

Welcome to my America, Frank!
And a pretty fair take on what -- in the shape of our feral gummint -- ails us all.

But just a couple of small corrections:

The Saul-Alinskyist-Svengali-operated sail-eared simpleton glove-puppet presently be-squatting and be-manuring our once most hallowed house might raise to the job description: "pretender to the presidency," perhaps -- but with ... shudder ... Plugs Biden, Nazi Pelosi and the recidivist, treasonous lying, looting, thieving mass-murdering, co-serial-rapist Missus Cli'ton all in line to succeed the mobbed-up murtadd Muslim Mussolini-modeled modified Marxist our beloved fraternal republic has no capital "P" President just now.

And oh that any one of them was but in thrall to the left wing of the Democratic Party.

Instead every last of them is stuck whatever Charley Dickens/Karl Marx/Saul Alinsky/Clement Atlee and/or other Euro-peon wanker-inspired delusion he has been frozen into ever since he long ago (or in the case of O'Zero: yesterday) took his one 1960s-styled suck of the bong, LSD and/or coke trip too many.

Re: Kuddos!!!!
I don't think that anyone can really get the grasp of this aritcle because it is pointed toward a hinden topic and that is the people in this country that are "Titled", gov. buerocrates and what not and then there are those that think they are "ENTITLED." These are those that ClownBama worked with in Chicago and now thinks that they are the ones that are the rightful owners of the wealth of this country!!! This is KUDOS for the writer, but lets don't hedge and himhaw, lets be very clear, the "Entitled" in this country are those that have sacrificed for this nation in military service and are not disabled(in my case, and can't work) and the disabled on SS!!! Those who feel that they are entitled and sit on their duffs and have kids and use the system are those who are-LAZY, DO NOT WANT TO WORK,WANT TO HAVE EVERYTHING HANDED TO THEM!!! AND YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE IF YOU ARE READING THIS, THEY ARE NOT ENTITLED TO NOTHING AND SHOULD NOT BE ENTITLED!!! This system if done right and worked in the right way to benefit those WHO ARE TRUELY ENTITLED would be cleaned up and cleansed of these free loaders who feel that they have been riped off by this gov!!!!

Thank You Cal
For this absolutely spot on description of the European socialism soon to grace our existence here in the states. Then no doubt to be absolutely overdone by our marxists, who no doubt will see an increase in their benefits as well.

The spell checker says I'm supposed to capitalize the word marxist...

In every socialist and communist system
the "rulers" have every good thing, while the "people" (in whose name EVERYTHING is supposedly done) get fleeced.

BAAAAAAAAAA.

Response to deltagreen's 01:15
Yes, there is; the one in DC obfuscates much when asked about eligibility/citizenship--with forged documents, high-pricey law-firms, ...--while the one in London has been open on those scores.

Not Sure Why:
I'm not sure why the entitlements of those in England should be aired here but it is nice to know that our politicians aren't the only ones who feel that all the money they collect in taxes belongs exclusively to them.

Frank
Well said!

Joel off-target
In an otherwise fairly okay post, Joel includes "atheism" in his list of progressive movements because, like every other 'ism'..they actually believe...that God does not exist."

Gee, does that include "theism"?

"Atheism" literally means "without theistic belief." Atheism is not a "belief," it is the absence of one type of belief. It tells you nothing about what a person does believe. One might as well define you as an "abunnyist" if you don't believe in the Easter Bunny.

If you have evidence acceptable to science or a court of law that God exists, please present it for examination in those forums, and if you succeed you will become justly famous as the undisputed greatest philosopher-scientist in history. Failing that, you ought to reconsider your own "true belief" in the absence of anything approaching credible evidence. Rationalization, no matter how fevered, is no substitute.

BTW, the overwhelming majority of leftists are theists, mystics, or both. Check out the politics of the World Council of Churches. Many atheists are conservatives/libertarians. Amusingly, Eric Hoffer, the author of "The True Believer," was an atheist - as was Ayn Rand, who you also "liberally" crib from. :o)

(no) Tacitus X writes:
"Atheism" literally means "without theistic belief." Atheism is not a "belief," it is the absence of one type of belief.
=======================
How silly

It does indeed tell what it believes.

You even say it in your own way of denying it all the while you clearly say what they do believe.

"it is the absence of one type of belief."

Defined by this narrow definition.

Their belief is there is no God.

1. Disbelief in or denial of the existence of God or gods.
2. The doctrine that there is no God or gods.

This is their faith and belief.

They are very religious about their beliefs there is no God.

You're confused

For those of us who
understand history, this is no surprise.

This is precisely where socialism inevitably leads, which is why conservatives oppose it so vigorously.

There were numerous stories that came out of the former Soviet Union describing how the working people stood in long lines for basic necessities, while those running the country dined on the finest caviar and Russian vodka.

All the talk from politicians about caring for the poor and underprivileged is only a ploy to get those people to give their power and support to government. Once government gets that control, it uses it to enrich itself. And that enrichment goes far and beyond anything that "greedy capitalists" ever dreamed of.

Where companies are concerned, the people do have recourse, even if that recourse may be difficult, because people give their money to business voluntarily. Where government is concerned, there is no recourse because money and assets are seized involuntarily.

How do you fight an entity that makes the laws and has the power to imprison dissenters?

Legislative expenses
While the column expresses a certain disdain for Parliment's payment for personal expenses of the legislators, the reality is that it is not uncommon for Government to pick up some of the living costs for those doing the Government's business as representatives.

The problem in Britain is that they're picking and choosing (to pay for a child's cot or not, that is the question). This is shear stupidity (a common commodity among the legislative class).

In California (hardly a state with an excellent legislature) our representatives are paid a standard "per diem" while the legislature is in session. This is intended to pay the cost of living away from their home district while in attendance. As a separate issue is the provision of a state-owned car and/or other transportation expenses.

The per diem approach gives the legislator a sum to pay for the child's cot (or for tampons) as they see fit. They get the same amount regardless and the same as every other legislator.

You'd think the Brit's might have figured out something like this by now... after all, they've been at this a whole lot longer than California has.

Across the pond
The American politicians exercise the same arrogance as their British counterparts.

The Enemy on This Side of Pond!!
I could care less what they are doing "Across the Pond." The Brits have caved to Muslims in their country and have abandoned their own history because of Muslim Threats. The Brits have become a nation of cowards.

What I am concerned about is the Aristocracy In our Own Congress and Executive Branch. These fools are spending money at a rate that is so large, that above and beyond our current tax collections, they are having to fund their lavish spending on creating a permanent government bureucracy that will keep them in powwer by borrowing 46 cents of every dollar they are squandering.

And, they are borrowing this 46 cent of every dollar they squander from our Enemies, the Red Chinese Communists, the Midddle Eastern Terrorist Nations, and from the Japanese who have long had as their aim, the destruction of our economic system.

We have Met The Enemy, and the Enemy is Barack Obama, The Liberal Democrat Congress and the MSM that has aided and abetted this Coup De Etat that the Liberal Democrats have pulled off.

talent scout routed
Your post is a low-level example of the reification fallacy (aka hypostatisation or the fallacy of misplaced concreteness) - i.e., the elementary fallacy of assuming the absence of something is another kind of thing.

The confusion is all yours: lack of belief in God does not equal belief in no God. By analogy, one is quite justified in not believing in invisible talking unicorns absent adequate evidence. One is not required to first scour every inch of the universe throughout all eternity to "prove" there are no invisible talking unicorns. Belief in invisible talking unicorns is not the default position!

Intellectually, you keep bringing a badminton racket to a gun fight . . .

Politics
POLITICS -- is a combination of two words -- POLY and TIC. "POLY" means "many" and "TIC" is a "parasite". So "POLITICS" is the same as "MANY PARASITES".

Whether it be the British Parliament, US Congress, or any other political body they are all a bunch of blood sucking parasites. It is we fools who keep electing the vermins.

Well done The Telegraph!
I think we should say "well done" to the editor and staff of the Telegraph newspaper for having the courage to publish this information.

The Telegraph is a relatively unfashionable newspaper and frankly this is the best thing it has done in a generation!

The feeling among ordinary people on this side of the Atlantic is one of shock and disgust! We always knew that British politicians were corrupt but nobody could believe the extent of the greed involved (one member of parliament claimed 2,500 pounds for the cleaning of the moate round his castle!).

In the last 20 years the media has cuddled up to politicians in good times in order to maintain their access to the people in power - Now the gloves are off and good journalists are putting the boot in on the politicians who would cheerfully live off us like an army of parasites!

Now it's America's turn - let's see your media expose the greed and arrogance of those who would willingly rule over you and have you enrich them for the privilege of doing so!

Regards,
Eddie McCann
