Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Conservatives have a point when they criticize President Obama and his fellow Democrats for not calling the mission in Iraq a “success” or a “victory.” But if they are right about that — and they are — they cannot now withhold praise from President Obama for the flawless rescue of Captain Richard Phillips from the hands of terrorists masquerading as pirates. (More about the misuse of nomenclature in a moment.)

One can be sure that had things gone badly and Captain Phillips had been killed, or if the president had gone to the United Nations for a resolution condemning the kidnapping, or if the ransom was paid and the terrorists escaped, conservatives would have been all over the president, claiming they were right when they said during the campaign (as did Hillary Clinton) that Obama is too inexperienced to be in charge of America's national security.

Will conservatives now hide behind the excuse that it was the Navy Seals, the FBI and the bravery of Captain Phillips that were solely responsible for the success of the mission and that the president played only a supporting role, at best? One could make the same argument about Iraq; that the troops and not President Bush should receive sole credit for toppling Saddam Hussein and planting the first seeds of democracy there.

We have become so polarized in America that one side cannot bring itself to praise any job done well by the other. In fact, the idea of "sides" further divides us in ways that are not beneficial to the country. Polls will now be taken that will probably show a rise in public confidence about Obama's ability to handle our national defense. Would someone argue if he had failed and his numbers declined that somehow an improvement in Republican poll numbers would make us safer? The last I checked, terrorists were equal opportunity killers.

The hijacking of the merchant ship and the kidnapping of Captain Phillips are two more pieces in the much larger combat operation against terrorists (or as the administration has suggested calling it, "overseas contingency operation"). What comes next is equally important.

The United States should start calling these "pirates" by their true name. They are Islamic terrorists who make millions in ransom from ship hijackings and kidnappings. They don't buy fancy cars and big houses like members of some drug cartels. Instead, they use the money to finance terrorism around the world. Our notion of pirates is of a "Peg-Leg Pete"-type with an eye patch, a parrot on his shoulder and a cup of rum in his hand; more of a character than a killer. That's not the profile of Somali pirates.

There is word from some of the terrorists that they plan revenge. On Monday, a few of them fired mortars at the Mogadishu Airport just as Rep. Donald Payne's plane was taking off. Payne, (D-NJ), the highest-level U.S. official to visit Somalia in years, was in Somalia to meet with the country's prime minister and other Somali officials to discuss ways to combat the growing pirate-terrorist problem.

The Obama administration is reportedly going to help Somalia form its own Coast Guard so that it can defend itself from terrorists and lessen their threat to merchant ships. This, as well as a plan to put marshals on the vessels to deter future ship seizures, is a good start, but why wait for these goals to be accomplished? Right now Somali terrorists are believed to be holding more than 200 hostages from other nations. If they won't agree to release these people now, how about a little military intervention? Let us demonstrate in no uncertain terms that America is not to be trifled with.

There was a time when few would dare harm an American for fear of retaliation. In recent years, that fear has subsided and now some terrorists may think they'll get a free ride with President Obama and his party, which is too often seen as preferring dithering to decisiveness, hand-wringing to neck-wringing; U.N. resolutions to American resolve and purposeful action.

The best thing the president could do for the country -- and himself -- is to prove he is not a milksop. And if the president takes on the terrorists, he should have the full support of all Americans, conservatives included. We can argue about the Left's hypocrisy later. When it comes to combating terrorists, we are all in this together.

Muslim terrorists killed by Obama
Couldn't this be considered torture? I mean, they probably would have let him go... eventually.

After all, only one was holding a gun to his head, the others were probably just along for the ride.

I also thought we were against capital punishment especially for teenage offenders....

Really, you are right I am glad the "Pirates" are dead and the captain was saved, but this is so hypocritical of Obama.

so we should praise obama
for not sabotaging a rescue? i think not. the decision to allow the military to do the best they could do was a no-brainer. anything else would be reprehensible.

All praises due.................
If you absolutely MUST praise him to convince yourself that you're not a racist, praise him for taking a few weeks less than that georgia puke.

The only person I give credit too
is the captain, who jumped off the raft not just once, but a second time before the jackasses not ready the first time got the job done.
If the president has to even be consulted on such a thing it is an utter DISGRACE to me and all my fellow lifetime US citizens.
It is the reason the multi trillion dollar war machine can't get ANYTHING done.
"permission to fire, sir,. sir, sir ?" " one second, or rather make that a few hours or a few days or some weeks rather, we're checking with the international lawyers "
" sir, sir ? "
" well, you can't do it, so uhh... you'll have to wait until a gun, preferably a large one the tards want banned, is at his back, with the trigger being squeezed - just make sure everyone knows the lines we need "
"sir ?"
"I'm calling the press, to confirm the reporting would be uhh. favorable"
"sir ?"
"you can't just shoot the enemy, son, war never was about shooting the enemy, we need a political solution !"
"sir, the captain is in the water again"
" G^#$#$D@^% soldier I don't know if we can sink or swim on this one ! "

You said:

I challenge you to properly document that the Captain jumped over board a second time!. I am retired from the company that owns that ship and know many of the players up to and including the President and CEO of Maersk Line, Ltd. I have followed this story probably more closely than most and have found no credible evidence that the captain jumped overboard a second time.

BLOCKADING SOMALIA,IRAN & TAKING A STAND
The President has to start showing gumption and Somalia is the place to start as it is more than just a haven for pirates but for radical Moslems in bed with Iran. While we cannot invade Somalia as head of an international force, as I naively proposed, we can, as others are suggesting, blockade Somalia's ports from which the pirates launch their attacks and Islamo-nazi terrorists operate. This will serve as a warning to Iran that blockading their ports and the economic strangulation of their country could be next. Obama should go to the UN and propose a Somali blockade and failing that he should then do what George Bush did in Iraq: organize a coalition of the willing. France, Britain, Poland, whoever will join to protect the high seas and rid them of the pirate scourge.

He Gets Credit For Being A Zero
Showing gumption is easy when hanging around Washington playing with the dog all day and being available at all times for the camera. Does he do any work? Or is is an all-the-time have fun and play?

I have to admit
that Obama got this one right. I hope it wasn't an aberation.

Credit Is Definitely Due
"We have become so polarized in America that one side cannot bring itself to praise any job done well by the other. In fact, the idea of 'sides' further divides us in ways that are not beneficial to the country."

Great column, Cal. Thanks.

i usually agree
I have to part ways with Mr. Thomas when he acts as though Obama somehow deserves praise for allowing the SEALs to do what they train for...protecting American lives and sovereignty. The fact of the matter is that Mr. Obama had no other choice in this situation but to allow the SEAL team to take action; the world was watching and it would have been disastrous for him politically to take no real action and allow the standoff to continue. What would impress me was if he came out and made it clear that this is not the exception, but the rule and any more piracy aimed at American flagged vessels or American interests will be dealt wtih the same way that Jefferson dealt with the Barbary pirates.

Cal
Thank you for having the grace in giving Obama credit for this act. I saw Goldberg yesterday did too. There is something noble about being honest.

On the other hand, though, we have Rush Limbough, who, IMHO, said something that should make every red blooded American mad..

"They were kids. The story is out, I don't know if it's true or not, but apparently the hijackers, these kids, the merchant marine organizers, Muslim kids, were upset, they wanted to just give the captain back and head home because they were running out of food, they were running out of fuel, they were surrounded by all these US Navy ships, big ships, and they just wanted out of there. That's the story, but then when one of them put a gun to the back of the captain, Mr. Phillips, then bam, bam, bam. There you have it, and three teenagers shot on the high seas at the order of President Obama."

Captain Phillips
A sea captain was held hostage while it took our president days to try to find a politically correct solution. Finally, he authorized use of deadly force. There is something mighty wrong with our command structure when warships have to stand by helplessly because our commanders in the field are being micro managed by POTUS.

Terrorists?
Somali pirates are not "Islamo-terrorists" any more than Columbian drug lords are "Catholi-terrorists". They're criminals who operate out of a broken nation, they're emboldened because their experience in the nineties is that the USA doesn't have the stomach for violence, and most of their money goes to procure a lavish lifestyle and pay for boats, arms, etc. Their contributions to Islam consist of payoffs to local sheiks and clan leaders. They're thugs on boats, and that's all.

The right decision
Sure he made the right decision. Kudos to him for that. What I want to know is why he took so da-mn long to do it. Five days after the fact, when half the country was asking "Why the HE!! aren't these pirates dead yet?", he finally stopped dithering and made a decision.

Origins
If Somali fishing rights had been protected from illegal trawlers 10 years ago, far fewer fishermen would have turned to piracy and we would not have the problem we have now. Expect it to grow, rich pirates will not have a problem recruiting starving people.

Torpedoes away,
Torpedos prevent putting any lives in contact with the pirates. Will the Chinese, French or English have to use them before the Obama administration remember they are in the arsenal of the United States Navy.

I agree credit were credit is due
how ever we at this time do not know if any credit is due obama. The Navy could have been operating under thier standard orders since the founding of the country. I.e. better to ask for forgiveness than permission. In a years time if the LT CMD has been promoted then we will know he was acting under presidental orders. If however as I think is more likely he is sent off to a backwater desk job or forced out of the service entirely then we know he was acting without presidental orders and against presidental wishes. Come back in a year and then give credit were it is due.

As for the cause of the sea terrorism only those without any understanding of history can claim it is due to modern day conditions. The world has been fighting sea terrorism in that area since the beginning of time. The first two major military conflicts the USA fought were against sea terrorist in that region.

Taft daft
Obviously, Limbaugh was doing a parody of the type of criticism usually meted out by libs when the shoe is on the other foot. "Merchant marine organizers"?! Hilarious stuff for any "red-blooded American"! One of Rush's funniest satirical comments.

Dean
Columbian drug lords are not "Catholi-terrorists" because they are not Catholic. They are socialist/communtist and are in fact communtist-terrorist. Socialism/communtism has been their religion for 50 years. The sea terrorist are in fact "Islamo-terrorists" because their religion is Islam.

Just because they have found a way to make money off their terrorism does not change the motive for that terrorism. The Columban drug lords main motive is socialism/communtism the sea terrorist main motive is Islam.

Praise Him, Praise Him!!
I don't think so! The American People and those captured American People were in agony for days. It was like waiting on the police to come to protect you from the bad guys when they are standing in your living room with AK-47's. And also you have your nerves calling these "Man Caused Disaters" Islamic Terrorist, I will bet DHS/Napolitano will have you on the list today.
FYI...Hillary has a much better way to resolve this problem. She is organizing a Donor's conference that will make the money she paid Hamas in the Gaza Trip look like chump change.I believe Hillary understands that the "Man Caused Disasters" are no longer satisfied with Millions. It is called "Punitive Taxation" CAL, the same "Punitive Taxation" Democrats use so effectively to punish the American People "They don't like very much". Hillary will agree to pay Billions now Cal,in principle, and Obama will sign off on it, for the wrongful killing of these "Moderate" young men who were mislead just like Hillary was by President Bush, to capture an American ship and it's crew for ransom.

Disagree
Bush's practically lone support for the Surge led to the turn-around in Iraq. We don't know, however, what Barak ordered or advocated in the case of the pirates. Nor has he clarified what his thoughts/orders were.

I suspect, however, it was not impressive. That the Navy did NOTHING the first time Capt. Phillips jumped off the boat and swam away from his captors, however, I think points in one direction: why didn't the SEAL snipers fire then? Why did the USS Bainbridge tolerate pirates shooting at it two times? It all sounds like a no-fire order to me--and who might have ordered that? And when you top that with an FBI negotiator being sent into a war zone, concern for Barak's orders mount.

Cal, you're a reporter. Why don't you ask Barak or his folks what their orders were each day of the crisis. Was there a no-fire order as I suspect? What was the point of an FBI negotiator? Was there something to be negotiated? What exactly? If all these issues are clarified to my satisfaction, then I'll give him the props or further criticism he deserves.

just enough but too late
My problem with his handling of this was two-fold:
1) He had NOTHING to day publicly for days when an American citizen was taken hostage by terrorists (lets call'em what they are) as did his VP. His Secr't of State was caught on tape laughing about Pirates and Somalia
2) He sent the FBI to negotiate/arrest the terrorist like this was a polics action and not the military situation it was.
3) To me it is simple - we have to make the cost of terrorism prohibitive to these terrorists - 3 dead bodies is a place to start. Attack an American ship and we will kill you...simple as that...

He handled the situation like he should from the standpoint that the Navy should have handled this, but his inclinations are very troubling...

Well shucks I gave him credit
On my website. So did Bernie Goldberg who wrote the book excoriating the media for their "slobbering love affair" with Barack Obama. To Sean Hannity he noted "liberals would not give President Bush credit for *anything* and I don't want to be like that to President Obama". Well said.

You are exactly correct and IF that day ever comes, I will support his efforts completely. Rhetoric does not count. I seriously doubt that day ever comes. It would not only go against his nature and everything he has believed until now but, it would be political suicide for a leftist. Before one can wage a battle against a determined enemy, one must first be convinced of the moral superiority of ones' own nation to those it would battle.

With the growing threat of failure of the global warmism agenda on the horizon, Islam offers the last best hope of subduing and organizing the entire world. For Obama, there is nothing more abhorrent then unorganized people doing what they wish.

Law of averages michigander
Of course, Oblunder's actual part in the rescue of the captain was about the same as erstwhile Canuckistani PM Joe "Who" Clark's in 1979 "Canadian Caper" rescue of some Americans from Iran--inactive, but as top-boss approver. The difference is that Oblunder lacks even the humility of Joe "Who" and will take the undue credit.

Credit to Obama?
Gee, I wonder how long this would have played out if Ronnie were in office! Give BO credit for what exactly? You must be joking Cal.

reply to Joe (#22)
I remember reading that it actually took 17 separate meetings for President Obama to reach the decision to give the "kill" order for the Somali Islamo-terrorists.

Well said, Mr. Thomas.
Obama did good on this one.

Why does Obama want Jesus' Cross Hidden?

Georgetown University Hid Religious Symbols at White House Request

Would the libtards give credit
if it were Dubya who gave the order? Suuuuure. We'd have heard nothing but the endless tales of woe about the poor black muslim teenagers murdered by the evil Bush.

Pirates
you are an idiot mr. thomas....Obama told the navy to stand down and leave the pirates alone so he could 'deal' with them ....if it wasn't for the navy seeing what a stupid move that was and took it upon themselves to take whatever opportunity they had to take out these fools the good capt would not be with us today....No Thanks to Obama!!! He didn't NOT give them the order to take out the pirates....

I pass on the credit
No skin off Bobo's ears and no credit - these pirates are from a country with no permanent government. Who's gonna give him a hard time? The Pirates Union?

Let's see how he handles a *real* enemy such as Iran, N. Korea, and Russia.

Mr Thomas must have been dreaming of TV
... cameras when he attempted to draw a comparison between Mr Bush's successful prosecution of the Iraq phase of the terror war and B Hussein 'Training Pants' O'Zero's recent near-total-screwup of the floating terrorist whackings.

But he got it right about calling the terrorists by their names.

For they are no less terrorists than is Osama bin Laden and are Ted Kennedy's favorite candidates for ACORN and the "Democratic" potty's electoral roles: the cowardly, little-old-lady and baby-bombing, bank-robbing, gun-and-drug-running epidemically-alcoholic, Stalinist gangster basta*ds who'd rather be called "the i r a." And, for far too darned long, have been.

Dean rabbits on about Somali ...
... "fishing rights" and that a supposed lack of "protection" from "illegal trawlers" some years ago caused fishermen to turn to piracy and "the problem we have now." We should, says Dean, expect the problem to grow given that the "rich pirates" will not have a problem recruiting starving people.

Close, Dean -- but no Christmas box. Not fish: grains.

The roots of not all that long ago net-agricultural-produce-exporting Somalia's starving go all the way back to the richly Soviet-agent larded "administration" of the traitor, Roosevelt.

Farm subsidies introduced by that gang caused the United States to build massive mountains of unsalable produce, much of which USAID then dumped around the world as "food aid."

Such were the quantities dumped in Somalia that its farming industry, unable to compete with "free," was bankrupted.

USAID then pulled out to go play elsewhere around the world and the consequence of that pullout was the mass starvation that caused the G H W Bush administration to send in American forces to provide relief.

Mr Bush's gormless goodwill gesture was turned by the Cli'ton Crime Family into one of its couple of score of military fiascoes and the consequence of that abject screwup is the failed state that now exists.

All courtesy, via successive "Democratic" potty "administrations," of Uncle Sam!

Bad news Cal
" Having spoken to some SEAL pals here in Virginia Beach yesterday and asking why this thing dragged out for 4 days, I got the following:

1. BHO wouldn’t authorize the DEVGRU/NSWC SEAL teams to the scene for 36 hours going against OSC (on scene commander) recommendation.

2. Once they arrived, BHO imposed restrictions on their ROE that they couldn’t do anything unless the hostage’s life was in “imminent” danger

3. The first time the hostage jumped, the SEALS had the raggies all sighted in, but could not fire due to ROE restriction

4. When the navy RIB came under fire as it approached with supplies, no fire was returned due to ROE restrictions. As the raggies were shooting at the RIB, they were exposed and the SEALS had them all dialed in.

5. BHO specifically denied two rescue plans developed by the Bainbridge CPN and SEAL teams.

6. Bainbridge CPN and SEAL team CDR finally decide they have the OpArea and OSC authority to solely determine risk to hostage. 4 hours later, 3 dead raggies

7. BHO immediately claims credit for his “daring and decisive” behaviour. As usual with him, it’s BS."

I guess that is so much exactly what we really expect that I definitely believe it.
Your opinion on this completely SUCKED and I knew it at the time.

Cal...
How amny years do you have to see what the libs do in order for it to sink in ?
You keep hoping it isn't true, but change is not coming in that area my friend. They are what they are, down to every last tree hugging detail.
