Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Entering the West Wing reception area for my last interview with President George W. Bush is a surreal experience. There is no one there, other than two Secret Service agents, a White House police officer and a receptionist. The place used to teem with people eager for a moment with the commander in chief, now people speak in hushed tones. A small TV set in the coatroom is tuned to Fox News. That will soon change. The news anchor is talking only about President-elect Obama. With two weeks to go in the Bush administration, it's all about the "O," not the "W."

Inside the Oval Office, I sit in the chair opposite the president's desk, the one reserved for visiting heads of state, the one, no doubt familiar to television viewers.

President Bush compares the fighting between Hamas and Israel in Gaza to what occurred in Iraq after the toppling of Saddam Hussein: "As this young democracy (Iraq) was taking hold, terrorists, suiciders, killers did what they thought was necessary to shake the will of the people ... to stop the advance of a free society. And yet, over time the Iraqi situation has gotten better and democracy is beginning to take hold."

The president remains optimistic that a Palestinian state can be created that will live in peace with Israel: "The definition of a state was being negotiated by (Israeli) Prime Minister (Ehud) Olmert and (Palestinian) President (Mahmoud) Abbas."

I ask him if the Palestinians in Gaza did not express their will by electing Hamas to lead them? He acknowledges they did, "in a relatively close election. But just remember, that vote wasn't on whether or not it was going to be war or peace. That vote was on who best can provide health and education. And I view that vote as a repudiation of the previous Fatah leadership, as well as a vote that said we are sick and tired of corruption, non-transparency, and we expect to be treated better."

The president is convinced that the way to defeat the "propaganda" coming from the extremists is to create free societies and "better efforts on our part to clarify what our position is." I still think this ignores a fundamental and doctrinal difference between the West and Islam. They believe we are prisoners of secularism and hedonism and that they are truly free within the bonds of Islam. But we move on.

Bush defends himself against a charge by a member of the Republican National Committee that he has behaved like a "socialist" because of his massive bailout spending. He says he still believes in less government spending, but when Henry Paulson, secretary of the U.S. Treasury, and Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Federal Reserve, tell him that if he doesn't act, the result will be worse than the Great Depression, "you can sit there and say to yourself, 'well, I'm going to stick to principle and hope for the best, or I'm going to take the actions necessary to prevent the worst.'" He says the bigger deficit about which Americans should worry is the one he tried, but failed, to fix: Social Security and Medicare.

The president disagrees with his former secretary of state, Colin Powell, who has said Republicans should abandon the social issues, if they want to win again. "I have ... been a strong ... defender of the culture of life. And I believe that's an important part of our party's future. I will be the first to concede that laws change only after hearts change." And yet he clearly believes that a GOP committed to conservative social values can help change hearts and, thus, laws.

President Bush suggests that Barack Obama will soon find that he must shift some of his positions from campaign rhetoric, particularly on the Bush doctrine of pre-emption: "I think the new administration will take a sober look at the world in which we live and come to the conclusions necessary to protect the homeland."

Do attacks by Democrats like Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid bother him? Reid last Sunday called Bush, "the worst president in history."

In the closest he comes to rebuking his critics, Bush says, "I believe there's a way to conduct ourselves in public life without resorting to name-calling. And ... so I won't. I tend to ignore that." He chalks up criticism to his "doing things" and having "an active agenda."

President-elect Obama has not asked him for advice, but Bush is "impressed by his demeanor and impressed by his love of his family. And I told him I'd be available after the presidency if he cared to ask my opinions. ... He's going to have to choose whose voices are most credible, as he sorts through these different issues that he'll face."

President Bush says he hasn't decided whether he will deliver a farewell address. He will, however, write a book. He regrets not tackling immigration reform before Social Security reform.

Saying he has been "strengthened by prayer" -- his own and those of others -- the president added, "...some days are happy, some days are not so happy, every day is joyous."

With that I leave America's greatest house, as will President Bush soon, to await the judgment of history. I suspect that judgment may be better than many now think.

An inner light

President Bush the first talked about a thousand points of light, his son is one of those lights. We,as America will miss his light, he believed and stayed with his beliefs.

When he veto the stem cell research bill and gave his reason,America should have been proud of his stance. To celebrate life, no matter how small, that is what we should do and as America much of that belief has been lost.Abortion is a sin that America has embraced, and with that the respect for life has been dimished.

President Bush has kept America safe for over 7 years, but that seems to have been lost on many. The dignity with which he has handed this transition is also lost on the MSM. They would absolutley die before they would actually give an ounce of praise to President Bush. Look back to how the Clinton admistration handled the transition to the Bush admistration was anything but honorable.

History will prove that the decisions that President Bush made and stood by were the right ones. Yes there were mistakes but no admistration is perfect. President Bush took his job of keeping America safe as his greatest job, and he accomplished it well.

I didn't vote for the President Elect, but I wish him well.To want anything else would be stupid. The new President will have many hills to climb, and we need to pray every day to give him the strength and wisdom to make the right decisions.I believe the Republican party and the people who call themselves Republicans have shown more grace and respect than the Democrats ever showed President Bush.

God bless President Bush his family and all those who have helped to keep America safe for the last 7 years. You will be missed.

President G. W.Bush
President Bush is a good man. Sad thing is when a good man goes to Washington DC is like putting your best hunting dog out in the middle of I66. Chance of survival is slim to none. Congress, the networks, the lobbyist, your own staff all have knives drawn and ready to stab and slice. Character is key for us all. George W. Bush has it. He will leave with several scars and wounds still dripping with fresh attacks from the jealous. But though it all, his faith has been a light for me. God be with Him and us.

President Bush
Why do the American people have such a low opinion of this President? To listen every night to the evening news and the talk shows about politics, there is no doubt that no person in public life could withstand that assault without a low approval rating. We have learned to take our cues from the "talking heads" since we have no direct knowledge of the inner workings of the government, and when it is all negative and criticial, that's the impression that is formed without questioning their motives or politics. I have lost respect for the current news media, because they have lost respect for anything but their own opinion, and in so doing have ruined honorable people, ala the President of the United states and anyone who does not suit their fancy!

A Sad Day
It will be a sad day for me when Bush steps aside and Obama becomes President. After all the vicious attacks he is still conducting himself in an honorable way. I don't know about everyone else but I was angry over the shoe throwing incident in Iraq, yet the press treats it as if it were a joke. If something like that happens to Obama, the outcry from the press will be deafening. When he retires, I hope that he comes back to the country that loves him: TEXAS!!!

Ditto
On reply #1, reply#2 and reply #3. I concur 100%. I can only add when the true legacy of this President has been judged by the light of history and not by the leftist media and the rabid liberal blogs his honor and integrity will be held as an example of true service to and love of our country.
In the face of the most dishonest, despicable and vicious daily attacks by far less honest and honorable foes he has maintained a humility, grace, and kindness toward his detractors that is beyond the abilities of and alien to those who unfairly malign him.

Cal
"...And I told him I'd be available after the presidency if he cared to ask my opinions. ... He's going to have to choose whose voices are most credible, as he sorts through these different issues that he'll face." ..."

Credible???? LMAO Cal, Bush the torturer is most likely destined for the Hague charged with crimes against humanity. He has already admitted his guilt. This individual has damaged the nation, sullied the reputation of the nation and crashed the economy. Reid was being kind when he called Bush the torturer a failure.

Here we go
I don't agree with everything Bush believes (bailout, Palestinian state, federal funding of education, foreign aid) but I think he's a very good and decent person, and I'm going to miss him.

And Hal, those SOBs in Gitmo are lucky I am not in charge of them. A week with me and they'd be begging for Bush and Cheney.

The Truman Fantasy

The impotent shell shuffling around the Oval office wondering when the American people will finally realize his greatness stands only to become more disappointed with the passage of time. Truman, while marginally competent generally acted in what he felt was the best interest of the average American and eventually the American people honored him for that. In contrast the Bush family has always acted in behalf of what was their personal interests and the in interests of "their class". Over time the invasion of Iraq will be viewed as simply the Bush family insuring their personal security while their cronies took advantage of a golden opportunity to plunder the public purse. The Bush record on domestic issues is one of consistently expanding government while importing millions of illiterate wage slaves. Bush will be remembered in the same light as a past Democrat president, but it will be Carter not Truman.

Hey Hal and OParker
Have you been attacked lately? Have you had your head cut off? Have you been the victim of suicide bombers? Are you know forced to practice Islam?

No....................then shut up and be thankful we had George W Bush in the White House.

I disagreed strongly with President Bush
on his handling of the immigration issue.

That said, this interview shows again what a fundamentally decent man has been at the helm for the last eight years.

If future historians are as intellectually honest as Paul Johnson, President Bush's light will shine brighter through the years. If they're like the average of the current lot, of course, it won't. But thanks to Pres. Bush, there will at least still be an America in which they can scrawl their rantings.

For Elkiejg
First, let me congratulate you on your erudite defense of the Bush family. Second, I guess over the last 7 years I missed the press coverage of the overwhelming evidence linking Iraq to the September 11th attacks. Third, let me thank you for your sacrifice because I can tell from the passion of your comment that you, your son, or grandson have spent three tours in Iraq so Paul Bremer could float lucrative contracts to the appropriate Bonesmen. George Bush may superficially appear to be a classy guy, but he has done a tremendous disservice to those who elected him

Death of the WASP Establishment
One wonders with Barack Obama assuming the presidency and George W. Bush leaving is this the twilight of WASP ascendancy in American politics? I believe both Bushes are good men and I also believe that Richard Nixon was basically a good man trying to do his best as president except he oversaw some "dirty tricks" and didn't realize only Democrat presidents can get away with "dirty tricks," case in point being William Bligh Clinton.

I believe the WASP establishment did more good than harm in the nation but obviously the aristocracy is no more. Instead we have the Democratic rootless climbers whose roots are not in the Protestant ethics or old line aristocratic wealthy eastern establishment but in a new populist elite of con men and women whose main asset is their belief in "giving the voters what they want as long as they give us power." The old Protestant ethic and principles are dead. The new ethic: "Anything goes as long as we are elected and stay in power" reigns.

God save the Republic!

President Bush
I miss him already and he still has 12 days left in his presidency.

I wish I could be there when he returns to TX to welcome him and thank him for what he has done for this country.

He's made his share of mistakes, but to maintain his sense of humor and sanity in these trying times is indeed special.

There will soon come a day when we all will wish he was back in office, and I fear that day will not be too far off.

May God be with him and his family, and grant him a peaceful retirement. If anyone deserves it he does.

Jeanette
"Date: Jan 8, 2009 - 9:29 AM EST Subject: President Bush ... May God be with him and his family, and grant him a peaceful retirement. If anyone deserves it he does."

Not certain about deserve but I can agree with you wish as long as Bush the torturer is in the Hague

Hal Donahue
You are so impressed with your stupid comments, but you are such a fool. That puts you in the majority in this "once great" nation. Continue to rant about the poor innocent prisoners and act like our treatment of them was anything different from how we handled them in the past ( other than the fact that they probably are treated much more humanely than they were in the past). If you are so sympathetic to them, why don't you adopt one, because no one else wants them, especially their own countries.

Shallow Hal
Hal Donahue: "I have little fear of terrorist attacks and Islam is not much different than christianity."

This has to be the dumbest comment I've ever seen on Townhall.

I haven't read about any Christian suicide bombers lately but, hey, I don't read everything.

Hal the incompetent
Hal,

One of the reasons there are people in Gitmo who could be released but haven't been is that if we did release them to their home countries they would be tortured or even killed. So much for your foolish 'Bush the torturer' canard. You have obviously never been hazed. The whole point of hazing is to eliminate unworthy candidates and I guarantee you what I went through was probably worse than the poor mistreated Gitmo detainees suffered at the hands of our interrogators.

You amuse me in small doses, more than that and you are nothing more than a buzzing gnat.

Thank you Mr Thomas.
For having the moral courage and honesty, to say what many of us feel for this wonderful but misunderstood president... Who kept us safe for 8 years even against the nincompoop Democrats who instead admire Clinton, who gave us Bin Laden in the first place..and whose actions in the White House during and after his administration were less then honorable. I have no doubt also that President Bush will not become an Arch millionaire from shady dealings overseas and books penned by someone else!

But as you say history might be kind to Mr Bush, i hope so..and as they say around here: "From your mouth to God's ears!"

Pierrette.

Farewell.
History, hopefully will be kind to Pres. Bush. Most of us have forgotten that we have not been attacked since 9/11. I have never been so ashamed of our politicians as I have for the past eight years. Let us wait and see how they treat Obama when he blunders, or will anything that goes wrong be the fault of Bush?

Terrorists are criminals using Islam as justification for their acts. They are not "Islam" and more than the IRA was "Christianity"

President Bush
will be missed by Americans very soon. He is a man of stellar character, a man with principals. Above all, he is a man who did not shirk his duty to protect America, regardless of poll numbers and never ending attacks from liberals in the media and Hollywood. Watching the never ending position changes of our President elect, one is forced to wonder if he has any principals from which he will not deviate. One also is forced to wonder just how much of American liberty he is willing to sacrifice to retain his "savior of the world" persona.

Give me a break will ya!
As far as our treatment of the prisonners in Getmo, may I remind the bleeding hearts.. that unlike the Muslims, we never put a man on televison like Daniel Pearl and cut off his head while he was forced to say " I am a Jew!" This for the whole world- (including his parents and his pregnant wife)- to see...Where were you that day?

Pluuuze give me a break..and open your eyes, before the Radical Muslims brainwash you...as they seem to have already!

are we talking moral relativism here? I am not talking just Gitmo I am talking all prisons we hide our suspects in. I am hardly a bleeding heart. I was watching the sad affair on TV

"...Pluuuze give me a break..and open your eyes, before the Radical Muslims brainwash you...as they seem to have already!"

My opposition is that is harms the US and helps the terrorists very simple oh and doesn't work

re: Hal Donahue
Just curious what has Bush done that is against international law? Actually per the Geneva Accords on the treatment of prisoners signed by this country we have the right and duty to summarily execute any combatant on the battlefield that is not in uniform. We have the duty to summarily execute any combatant and any commanding officers who use civilians for cover. We have a duty under international law to summarily execute anybody who uses a non-combatant structure such as a school or religious house of worship as cover. We have a duty to execute any combatant that is intentionally targeting noncombatants. Every detainee in Gitmo should by international law but executed. I would say you'd have a tough sell trying to prosecute Bush for violating international law because he chose to interrogate prisoners and treat them humanely rather than execute them as international law proscribes.

Pres. Jorge focused on wrong bad guys

I voted 2x for W, but I am sick about it (though Windsurfer and public traitor Cohen-Kerry was NOT a real alternative). The war in Iraq was a profligate war of choice against the wrong Islamics; Iraq had NOTHING to do with 9/11, WMD's were irrelevant to the U.S. anyway, and Saddam and Osama were opponents.

We will have spent $3 TRILLION all-in, with thousands killed and maimed-- all because the neoCONS then manipulating the Bush W.H. (Perle, Wolfy, Feith, Libby, and Wurmser... and their fellow pan-Israeli allies braying incessantly in the media--> Krauthammer, May, Kristol, Kagan, Prager, Gaffney, Barone, Medved, Prelutsky) wanted permanent American bases in Iraq for Israel's protection-- the dirty little secret.

Meanwhile, near-clueless Presidente Jorge believed in open borders, so he failed to uphold his most fundamental oath-- to defend and protect our border. Like Amnesty John, he had made a Faustian deal years ago for employer lobby $ and Hispanic votes, but both quislings failed to get the latter, even as they sold out America to the indigent, ignorant ILLEGAL alien invasion... which will likely leave a legacy of an America morphing into a third world welfare state as ILLEGALS are enfranchised and vote it in.

Finally, RINO Jorge spent $ and grew govt. like a born-again 'Crat in order to buy loyalty for funding his misbegotten war-- swell job there, Jorge Bush!

God bless President Bush and his family
He was President during the toughest times in American history. He did keep us safe for 7+ years.

I wish no ill-will against Barack Hussein Obama but, due to his lack of experience, he will not have a clue as to how to effectively protect the nation once Secretary Gates leaves. Panetta will likely slash CIA funding and Gates' successor in a year or so will likely do the same for Defense. Obama is already about to spend more than Bush and the media is heaping praises on the brilliance of more Bush economic measures-but more!

Bush is a brave man and he plays it cool.

I also think Cheney was probably one of the best Vice Presidents we ever had. Gore had almost no role whatsoever in the Clinton administration. Biden is making noises about reducing the role of the VP and that is up to Biden. The thing I liked most about Cheney is he had no desire to be the next President and that made him one of the most useful and helpful people in the world to hold that office.

God bless both Bush and Cheney and their families.

Thanks, Cal
Thanks for an honest and fair column regarding President Bush, so rare to read these days.

I have not agreed with all he's done but he's an honest man, a praying man, and far, far, FAR, above his detractors. After eight years of constant assault by the media and democrats, who have done everything possible to destroy the Bush administration, regardless of the damage it would do to the country, he has held his head high, knowing that history WILL exonerate him. The same useful idiots who tried to destroy Bush and managed to get Obama elected will live to regret what they've done.

Many of them should be brought up on charges of treason. But they won't. They will get away with what they've done-in THIS life, but not in the next. They will pay when they stand before God. And they will. Everyone will.

Having said that, I have committed to praying for Mr. Obama and I truly hope that he does turn into a good president. I refuse to lower myself to the actions of those who tried to destroy George Bush.

Dear Al..about moral relativism ..
What does "moral relativism" has to do with anything? what was moral a 100 yrs ago is still moral today! May I remind you that in court jargon they say that "The Lawyer who is not ready to use his opponent's tactics in the courtroom has a jackass for an Attorney!"

Having being born a Christian many years ago amongst the Muslims in North Africa, I can vouch for the fact that Arabs regards all kindness and compassion as a woman's trait..and thus they laugh at us when we try to be decent, and moral.. and are surely laughing now about our dilemna about Gitmo! when I think of all the problems our country is facing today, that should be the least of our worries, trust me.

President Bush
Despite some of the policies I disagree with, I have always admired and had great respect for President Bush. He is a man of character. it is too bad that so many people are brainwashed and blinded by meaningless hatred by media and evil leftwing activists that they cannot see the truth. What an unhappy and sorry bunch.

God bless President George W Bush and his family. We will miss you. And, God help the rest of us with Obama administration.

Just curious what has Bush done that is against international law?.."

Certainly, he admitted personally ordering the water boarding (torture) of three individuals and state admits over 30 individuals dying undergoing "enhanced interrogation" either one of those is enough to charge with with crimes against humanity

"...Actually per the Geneva Accords on the treatment of prisoners signed by this country we have the right and duty to summarily execute any combatant on the battlefield that is not in uniform..."

What was the uniform of Taliban forces? But I won't even argu Geneva with you crimes against humanity is better and easier to convict

"... We have the duty to summarily execute any combatant and any commanding officers who use civilians for cover..."

Really how did I miss that "duty" hmmm

"...We have a duty under international law to summarily execute anybody who uses a non-combatant structure such as a school or religious house of worship as cover..."

Same thing I wonder what book of duties you are using that throws "summarily" around so lightly

"... We have a duty to execute any combatant that is intentionally targeting noncombatants. Every detainee in Gitmo should by international law but executed..."

Stop right there immates at Gitmo have been proven innocent and more than a few were kidnapped right off the streets. So you are simply wrong or are you stating an "opinion"

"... I would say you'd have a tough sell trying to prosecute Bush for violating international law because he chose to interrogate prisoners and treat them humanely rather than execute them as international law proscribes..."

Water boarding is torture even the US prior to the Bush Regime said it was and prosecuted folks under it.

that is my point exactly about torture is was nor moral 100 years ago and it is not now

"...being born a Christian many years ago amongst the Muslims in North Africa...is facing today, that should be the least of our worries, trust me."

perhaps it is a gender thing but having lived traveled and worked with them I strongly disagree my expreience was the exact opposite

Great President
I voted for George Bush because he was a Christian. I believe him when he defended him self for being a Christian. I believe in all that he did was what he thought keep our country safe and was right for the people. I haven't gone alone with everything he did but i think he has had more on his plate them any other president we have ever had. I think the biggest thing were he went wronge was the bailouts. But remember Peoski & Reid was the biggest support They wanted the Bailout right then. Immigration and the bailout was what was his two biggest mistake. But I am sure he thought he was doing the right thing. In four years from now we will look back am wish we had he back. To me he is a great president.

GW
There are no words to assuage the injustice done to this humble man. I pray that God will continue to guide, enlighten and comfort him. For the sake of an undeserving citizenry he held the line against another terrorist strike on the U.S. proper. Personally, I am grateful to President George W. Bush. My grandson proudly served under him amd died for the ideals that shaped this nation - and are held dear by the president. He has not deserved the raw hatred that has been spewed at him. But, like a true Christian, he forgives and will sevenfold over and over. His is not a character that can be explained simply. I am proud to have called him (my) President.

President Bush worked with the Texas
Democrats, which was fine because they were honorable Texans.

But working with the National Democrats,
he was dealing with savages.

Bush Kept the Bloodshed on Their Soil
President Bush isn't perfect, but he kept the war and blood shed on enemy soil where many of the foreign immigrants have lived in violence since time began, but now that Obama is about to take office, groups of foreign immigrants have taken to the sidewalks and targeted American Jews while holding their country's flags and wearing masks and using our public sidewalks to espouse hate and violence and threats at American citizens on American soil. Why are they here? Obama is silent on these serious issues and how far will this be allowed to grow before those who are here and hate Americans and aren't true Americans and hate the Jews and Christians, be allowed to remain here without being held accountable by law enforcement? Foreign immigrants shouldn't be allowed to act out against our citizens on our soil. Anyone who shouts hate crimes and states that they will dominate and subvert our constitution and force our citizens to accept their political aka religious agendas need to be deported to their own country because they didn't immigrate to the U.S. honestly and to assimilate and follow the laws of the U.S. of America but are living here under false pretense to do our country harm. Americans must fight back against foreign immigrants who think they can trample on 200 years of freedom and abuse our laws to attack our citizens and laws.

The Hague
I notice that twice Ferdinand E. Donahue
stated that Dubya should be sent to The Hague.

"The Hague" is getting to be a popular refrain these days amongst members of the wannabe class.

Of course the Hague has no jurisdiction over these United States but they are not ones to let a little reality intrude upon their fantasies.

Why the emphasis on "The Hague"? Simple. In the second place they have no way to arrange a trial in American courts and in the FIRST place they know good and well that among 12 American jurors, some NOT GUILTY votes are actuarily certain. They simply cannot abide the thought of our principles having legal sway.

The exit interview
I'll one up this one.

How about Harry Reid is the worst senator in history.

Agreed
I do too.

Moral relativism
Al, working with Arabs is not the same as being raised amongst them! For instance any boy knew that one on one no Arab kid would attack him, but given two of them, you had better run!
What this world is facing for this Century is not Economics and unemployment, that will be fixed...But the Muslim menace hanging over all of the Western world is here to stay, unless we are willing to face reality and act accordingly, President Bush made a good dent at it and all he got for it is incomprehension and disrespect!
This brou ha ha about Abu greib is so ridiculous it defies the imagination. For when you are facing an enemy willing to send his woman and children to implode themselves to kill others... you don't retaliate with a broom...or moral relativism!!
I only pray our new president will have the moral courage to do what is needed now to safeguard us, as Bush did for the last 8 yrs.
