Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Most children have probably finished their Christmas lists to Santa Claus. Some elected officials, however, are still compiling theirs.

Close behind Detroit's wish list comes a long one from America's mayors.

Last Monday, the U.S. Conference of Mayors sent its list of wishes to the political equivalent of Santa Claus: Congress. The mayors apparently figure with all the talk from President-elect Obama about infrastructure repair and job creation, they might as well try to pile onto Santa's lap, too.

The mayors claim the economy will be stimulated if their wishes are granted. What do they want? The National Taxpayers Union (NTU) has analyzed the 72-page list. Here are some of the lowlights.

-- $1.102 billion in projects involving sidewalks;

-- $1 million for annual sewer rehabilitation in Casper, Wyo. (emphasis mine);

-- $6.1 million for corporate hangars, parking lots, and a business apron at the Fayetteville, Ark., airport.

-- 15 projects with the term "stadium" in them, including a $150 million Metromover extension to the Florida Marlins' baseball stadium; and

-- 81 projects mentioning "landscaping" and/or beautification efforts.

Kristina Rasmussen, NTU's director of government affairs, offers more analysis of the mayors' report on NTU's blog: "Total cost of the wish list is $73,163,299,303. They claim this will create an estimated 847,641 jobs in 2009 and 2010. Divide that out, and you get a cost to taxpayers of $86,314 per job. Not exactly a great deal."

No, it is not a great deal in that sense, but it is a great deal ... of money, not that this matters these days with hundreds of billions being tossed around as if it were confetti. But who's counting? Certainly not Congress; Congress has opened the purse strings faster than a bank teller faced with Willie Sutton's stick-up gun.

Here's one proposal I especially like: $1,500,000 for an initiative in Dayton, Ohio for the "Reduce Prostitution-Off the Streets Program." The proposed spending would "connect individuals involved in prostitution with resources to leave a life of prostitution." I guess Ronald Reagan was right when he observed, "It has been said that politics is the second-oldest profession. I have learned that it bears a striking resemblance to the first."

The Beach Boys might like this one: "$6,000,000: Ventura, Calif., Water Surfers Point Improvements." "This project is to protect the beach with natural buried cobble stone, create sand dunes over the buried cobble, relocate, and rebuild the State Owned Omer Rains beach front bike path, and construct parking lot and drainage."

Where in the Constitution is there authorization for such spending?

Government can always find new ways to spend our money. That's because it's not government's money. Does government ever ask if the public approves of such pork barrel spending? Does it ever ask us if we have enough money? No, government tells us how much of our money it intends to let us keep. Instead, shouldn't we be telling government how much of our money we will allow government to spend?

Democrats, especially, used to talk about "mortgaging our future" by irresponsible spending. Now the Congress is behaving like a bank gone wild, handing out money to almost anyone that asks for it with few strings and no sense attached.

The so-called "jobs" the mayors claim will be created will only last for a brief time. Then what? Those who take them are likely to be back where they were when the projects are finished: out of work and waiting for the next government rescue.

Read the entire wish list here.

Congress should say "no" to the mayors. Given the attitude in Washington these days -- and a Democratic president about to take office with a bigger Democratic congressional majority -- that is unlikely to happen.

The question ought not to be how we get prostitutes off the streets in Dayton, but how we retire them in Congress.

...if Santa Claus were a thief
The big difference between Democrats and Santa is that the Dems have to take from some to give to others. Being good will most likely get you penalized when the Dems want to hand out gifts.

Spending pork on prostitutes - very stimulating.

My niece says thanks, Politicians -

"Total cost of the wish list is $73,163,299,303."

For spending her wealth away, you scum! Hey Arnold in CA, why don't we liquidate your savings and start bailing your state out with those funds first! Sleazy, sorry slobs. You people are freakin' AWFUL.

I wonder
What it will take for a Taxpayer revolution.
You know, we the people, are the ONLY source of government revenue. If we banded together and refused to pay our tax bills, it could cause real problems for our congress critters. The only problem with that would be coordination. It would take millions of us to organize to pull it off. If enough of us would do that, they wouldn't be able to put us all in jails, because they wouldn't be able to fund the jails or the federal officers for enforcement....

Holy Smokes! West Hartford, CT?!?!?
One of the richest towns (pop. 64,900, mean household income: $75,000, mean house value:$299,000) in the richest state in the union wants $68.95 million!? They're all millionaires there! To create 1510 "jobs" (@$45,662 per)? Nobody from West Hartford is going to do any of those "jobs" - they're all millionaires (did I mention that?). Just another 1500 illegal aliens in town - just what the good citizens want.

And here's the Head Checkwriter:

A noted psychiatrist was a guest speaker at an academic function where Nancy Pelosi happened to appear. Ms Pelosi took the opportunity to schmooze the good doctor a bit and asked him a question with which he was most at ease.

'Would you mind telling me, Doctor,' she asked, 'how you detect a mental deficiency in somebody who appears completely normal?'

'Nothing is easier,' he replied. 'You ask a simple question which anyone should answer with no trouble. If the person hesitates, that puts you on the track.'

'What sort of question?' asked Pelosi.

Well, you might ask, 'Captain Cook made three trips around the world and died during one of them. Which one?''

Pelosi thought a moment, and then said with a nervous laugh, 'You wouldn't happen to have another example would you? I must confess I don't know much about history.'

She's 2nd in line to be POTUS folks.

I have a novel ...
idea and I know it will work. How about not taxing the people white in the first place and leaving the money at home and the local citizens could do with the money as they wish.
Sure, the guys in big government at the top would have less power and the government agencies would shrink .... but all of those people love America first, don't they? True the EPA and OSHA wouldn't get tipped off to every sidewalk that was built locally and there would be enviromental impact ....
So if you understand my drift, you realize that nothing can be different than it is and everything is exactly as we want it. Quit whining and lick your masters hand. He might take pity on you and grant you some spillover.

What about this idea, Cal?
How about we take away the tax exempt status of those evangelical churches you so often shill for?

Evangelicals ain't no slouches when it comes to taking advantage of Santa Claus government.

Don't get me wrong.

I know most churches and religious institutions accomplish many good deeds(and that includes evangelicals).

But, Cal, if you are so disturbed over the prospect of tax funds being used to build and maintain an infrastructure here in our Beloved Republic, I submit that forcing religious institutions, "regrettably" even those evangelical institutions so dear to your heart, would be an ideal way to come up with the funds necessary to repair our ageing and decaying infrastructure.

And Cal, I am sure you would be delighted to learn that those funds, available by removing the tax exemption from the churches, could be used in lieu of having to raise taxes on hardworking American men and women.

Do I hear an "amen"?

Mr. Thomas
touched on a point that I've been thinking about since Obama put out his tax payer funded make work projects. After all the light bulbs have been changed and sidewalks fixed, won't everyone be unemployed again? Wouldn't it be better to lower the tax rates so companies that actually produce things and employ people can expand their businesses and actually make more business and industry?

jerabaub

Why jerabaub, I had no idea you were so anti religion. In your world, there would be no tax deduction for giving to a church. Would this extend to the United Way and other charitable organizations with religious ties? You wish to elbow out any private giving at all in favor of only public taking? Is there any funds out there you do not condone the taking of for the greater good?

You take my money when I earn it. You take my money when I spend it. You take my money through various fees on things like licenses to drive, licensing my vehicle, licensing my occupation, etc. etc. If I have enough left over to eat and give some to my church, you want to take it away from the church and give it to Congress to spend? Your true nature is showing through jerabaub and it is ugly.

hitchhiker
I am just trying to come up with a viable solution to remove the excessive tax burden on the citizens of our Beloved Republic.

I am being patriotic.

Please explain
Jerabaub:

Please explain your statement that, "Evangelicals ain't no slouches when it comes to taking advantage of Santa Claus government."

My church does not receive one red cent from the government. My church also pays property tax to the government on the portion of the acreage that we have that is not specifically used for the ministry on a regular basis.

I am sure that if the government decided to take away the tax deduction for charitable contributions, the giving at my church would not decrease. The Bible says to give your first fruits to the Lord. That is what our congregation members do. Getting a tax deduction is a nice perk, but no one I know gives to the church strictly for the tax deduction.

Mayors, my foot
All this proves is that mayors, like corporations, federal government agencies, Senators and Congressmen, Wall Street, Main Street and state governments across America wanrt to deficit-spend at an astonishing and alarming rate -- and they want us, the taxpayers, to pay the ENTIRE bill both today and tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow.

I guess the ONLY people, the ONLY entity, expected to live within their means is/are: US, the taxpayers. Those people who bought WAY MORE HOUSE than they could afford -- whether they did so out of greed or out of stupidity -- get no help at all. But Wall Street gets help by the billions. Detroit is lined up. State governments have their hands out and now municipalities do too.

I share GarryB's (reply #6) frustration. I WANT to revolt, but all that a one-person revolt will do is land me in jail. Letters and emails to Congressmen go unnoticed. I hear people say again and again that we can change the system -- but no one truly says how that can happen.

MD/MG R# 11
You are being way too logical for the politicians we have nowadays.

IMO you are spot on, just way too logical.

Pathetic, isn't it?

Rocko
I did not say I was in favor of removing the tax exemption of religious and charitible institutions, altho when they engage in politiking for various parties and candidates I think it should be examined.

I simply was offering my modest contribution to assisting Cal Thomas regarding his outrage on so much tax money spent on our infrastructure, and to that end, I suggested a possible idea to reduce the excessive tax burden on hardworking Americans.

It was half in jest.

garryb R#6
I've had the same thoughts myself. Good post.

Problem is, " we the people, are the ONLY source of government revenue" is not accurate in my mind. The powers that be simply print more monies and pffffft goes the value.

No one can compete
With the enviros. Millions of tax dollars plus millions more in lost production have gone to protect a mouse in Wyoming & Colorado. Cats are forbidden outside, wheat cannot be grown where they MIGHT want to live. Now enviros are suing to "protect the whitebark pine" from global warming.
If there is a way to waste what we work for the government and do gooders will find it.

Response to Kathryn @ 00:44
You wrote "if Santa Claus were a thief...The big difference between Democrats and Santa is that the Dems have to take from some to give to others"

Actually Dhimmicruds, like most socialists work on more of an Andy Capp approach--they ROB Peter to pay Paul and then don't pay Paul (editted from a 1980's Andy Capp strip in which Flo described Andy as one who "BORROWS from Peter...").

Plus, if Santa were a thief, he'd still lead the Dhimmicruds on honesty front (pilfered and editted from Walter Scott's "Ivanhoe" from description of Normans de Bracy, Bois-Guilbert, Front-du-Boeuf and Malvoisin brothers by Friar: "oppressors they always were, and never a fraction so honest as many thieves of my acquaintance").

May I add?:

How about the Count of Monte Crisco and the Laird of Lard? Just a thought.

How do we retire them in Congress...

By finding, supporting, and voting for politicians that will do the “right thing” instead of the “politically correct thing”. Americans have created an aristocratic, self-serving, and corrupted political class that no longer represents the will of the people. Our only options are to send them home and install a truly elected government that does represent the will of the people. The only other option is too revolt against this corruption; however, under our Constitution that would be very difficult and would possibly bring about the anarchic mayhem we all fear.

The question then becomes; “Which is worse”? Do nothing…or take actions that will bring America back from the brink of a disaster that is over-taking it.

A Modest Proposal
The city of Dayton wants $1.5M to get prostitutes off the streets. How about they send the street prostitutes to DC to replace the elected prostitues in congress?

At least the street prostitutes don't claim to be any better than they are.

...and when the party is over...
We need not worry about the plight of those who are hired to do these projects. When the projects are completed, ten years after they were due to expire and at 25 times the projected expense, these good people will have become indispensable public employees.

Thus it always is with government projects.

We Are Hypocrites
We are hypocrites is the answer. We say we don't like this wastful spending, or what we think is wasteful spending when they spend the money somewhere where we do not live. But most of us, love it when that spending is spent where we live. As long as that attitude is in play, the politicans win, and "we the people" lose.

Santa Claus Government
Agree in chief with 16 December. To be fair, must point out that the proposed expenses for Fayettville airport will probably come from a trust fund which has been funded by aircraft owners and operators, aircarrier passengers and shippers. Just wait until the new admin tries to raid such trust funds, such as unemployment insurance, highway safety, etc. etc.

Thanks, Mr Thomas, about Mayor Mayhem!
Your column has a lot of info I didn't know about. Isn't it crazy because most of those projects sound like cosmetics! Strictly for show. I think that many people like myself feel a sense of powerlessness in doing anything to stop this. Who is listening to us?

Should patriotic conservative citizens sit around waiting for our day to come? I think we will have to "seize" it with meetings, marches, demonstrations, letters, phone calls, protests and bans. There is no time for sitting on our hands. Our motto might be like one of our country's early banners: Unite or Die! and Don't Tread On Me!

So it is with the case of protesting the Scotus not even caring about whether the PEBO is or is not a natural born citizen.

We have stupidly elected many greedy squatters who are living off the public trust, and who don't know the meaning of the word "trust" themselves.
Their pride must be laughed at, made fun of and ridiculed. Being nice, quiet, polite, and obedient citizens hasn't been working lately.

I have a Wish
You cannot “conserve” what has already been lost. Conservatives must abandon the defensive mindset inherent with traditional conservatism and take the initiative because no one can win a defensive war. It is time that conservatives become “progressive” in their thinking and their strategy to reclaim their nation..

Karl Marx said: “A nation without a heritage is easily persuaded.” Any genuine solution must involve helping the American people rediscover who they are and what set them apart as a people and as a nation. Our goal must be nothing less than to generate another great awakening in America, much like the first one, as remembered in the poem “Awaken” by Lawrence Tribble:

One man awake, awakens another.
The second awakens his next door brother.
The three awake can rouse a town,
By turning the whole place upside down.

The many awake can make such a fuss,
It finally awakens the rest of us.
One man up with dawn in his eyes,
Surely then multiplies

Above all may we not be so proud as to think that we, through our feeble efforts, can successfully redirect the course of our nation. In all likelihood as a country, we have progressed beyond the point of no return. We must place our hopes entirely in God's willingness to intervene for His people remembering that “With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.” Matt 19.26. Likewise our attitude must reflect the simple truth expressed by John Quincy Adams: “Duty is ours, the results are God's.”

For cryin' out loud
Haven't politicians ever heard of tightening their belts when times are tough?

Oh yeah, they're trying to perpetuate their jobs. They're exempt.

jerabaub
1. Your point about churches is too silly for a response.

2. I'm sure Cal has no problem with spending tax money on infrastructure. What Cal has a problem with is the silliness or stupidity of the infrastructure projects.

If the Florida Marlins want their stadium improved, have at it. Just don't ask us to pay for it.

None, don't be so sure
Many of us, I believe, have written to our representatives and told them NOT to bring home the bacon. At least I have. I believe that for many conservatives, the value of a good elected official is how SMALL he can help make government, how SMALL he can help make public spending, how SMALL he can make government intervention in problems that are essentially state problems. And I have no problem writing to all my elected officials and telling them how I want them to vote -- and it's not FOR pork.

Pay Taxpayers Back For Public AIrwaves
1. Did the U.S. Congress and or the FCC violate the tax laws related to public air waves when they allowed cable companies to high jack the public airwaves for-profit?
2. Until the 90s, American people could plug in their TV sets and watch local channels and public TV because Americans pay taxes supporting public air waves, but today, we can't plug in our TV's and watch television unless we pay up monthly fees to private corporations for-profit.
3. How did the cable companies obtain the rights to public air waves and the right to charge Americans to pay for local television stations and public TV produced on public air waves that are paid by the taxpayers?
4. Why are we paying taxes for public air waves that have been high jacked for-profit by private corp's which is like having an imaginary gun to our heads - pay up or don't watch TV. In my opinion, the U.S. Congress and or FCC has allowed the violation of public air waves but continue to collect taxes for public air waves knowing that the American people aren't provided with the services that those taxes have been ear marked to provide.
3. Where have the billions of tax dollars gone that have been collected and are collected for public air waves and isn't this leading to contolled media?
4. The U.S. Congress or FCC need to explain how and why they continue to collect taxes for services not rendered in violation of public air wave regulations. They need to inform the public where the billions collected for public air waves has been used. In my opinion this could be an alleged fraud on the people and alleged conflicts of interest.

jerabaub: No amen's for you
How do you get comparing pork projects from tax exemption? The two are not comparable.

Tax exemption is the government conceding that they in fact do not have the right to take your money.

Pork projects are the government handing you the money they seized from me.

The two are uncomparable.

Stupidity in government!
I have lived long enough to remember the tail end of the depression of the 1920's into the 1930's!
Never, have I seen such Stupidity in Governmnent as what i am seeing this year! I am sure the Constitution does not give the right to the Government to spend our money and with inpunity throw the entire Nation into a depression with their "Bail Out" stupidity1 it did not work in the 1920's and it will not work in the 2009's!

history is provided to us to learn from, not to repeat, hoping for a different outcome!

Wise up or face the Voters Ire in the next several election years!

When taxpayers,
will cry out, enough.
Those who work hard and are playing by the rules are being punished.
Finally taxation without representation.
