Who's Influential?

Poll
Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Time magazine has published another one of those silly and meaningless lists some in the media occasionally and irritatingly compile to validate their self-importance. It is the 100 "most influential people in the world." I didn't make it, but then I don't make other lists like People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive," which must be an oversight.

Time never tells us what qualifies these people as influential. Dictionary.com defines influence as, "the capacity or power of persons or things to be a compelling force on or produce effects on the actions, behavior, opinions, etc., of others."

Who on Time's list fits the definition of "influential"? Not Tim Russert, who is a terrific interviewer, but how much influence could he have at 11 a.m. on a Sunday morning when millions are in church? "If it's Sunday, it is 'Meet the Press'" he signs off every week. No, if it's Sunday, for more people than watch his program, it is church.

Why is Mayor Michael Bloomberg on the list? Most of the world's people don't live in New York City, though on Friday afternoons while trying to escape by plane or car it sometimes seems that way. Maybe he's influential because of the high taxes and high tolls over which he presides.

Tony Blair? I haven't noticed an increase in fish and chips consumption since he was Britain's prime minister.

George Clooney? Chris Rock? I think Chris Rock is one of the funniest men alive, but I usually switch channels when he comes on because his vocabulary seems limited to a vulgarity that describes the sex act. That isn't talent, much less influence, unless Time wants to credit him with the dubious distinction of increasing the public utterance of the F-word.

Oprah Winfrey? For a lot of women, I suppose, but surely not a majority of women. Does anyone watch her show in China?

I'll grant the influence label to the head of Saudi Arabia's House of Saud, only because he continues to take more of our money by raising the price of oil. Real influence, though, would be American political leadership vowing to make us free of Saudi oil and its influence. I might vote for such a leader, especially if he (or she) came up with a slogan like, "Let Œem Eat Sand."

Rupert Murdoch is on the list and he is one of the few who qualify as influential, as his media empire grows and decides what programs will entertain us and what news to give us (disclosure: I am a paid Fox News Channel contributor).

I wonder why Jesus of Nazareth never makes the list? Over 20 centuries, uncounted numbers have testified to changed lives upon meeting Him. Changing a life from what it was to something better is real influence, isn't it?

What about the mother who influences her children by sacrificing for them and giving them opportunities she didn't have? I never see her on the list. And the couple that stays together and works out their problems, rather than seeking a "no fault" divorce? Don't they influence others?

The business leader who puts principles and ethics before profit and corner cutting surely influences his or her employees. Too bad we don't read more about them in the major media. Covering only the sleazy and corrupt is a form of influence because it contributes to the general cynicism about everything from politics to capitalism. And speaking of politics, there are honest politicians, but you rarely hear about them, as much of the media prefer to focus on the crooks.

John McCain, Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are on Time's list of the most influential, but only the one who wins the election will have a chance to influence us. Even then, presidents only marginally influence our opinions, most of which we already hold before they are elected. Presidents rarely influence our actions or behavior, except when we don't like what they do.

Time's newspaper ad says these "most influential people are changing the world and making history." Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie? I don't think so.

Question to All
Just curious guys.

Do any of you, and I mean IS THERE EVEN ONE OF YOU, who gives a rats a__ what Clooney, Jolie or Pitt have to say about anything?

Obama is Immoral
"The Nazis are well remembered for murdering well over 11 million people in the implementation of their slogan, 'The public good before the private good,' the Chinese Communists for murdering 62 million people in the implementation of theirs, 'Serve the people,' and the Soviet Communists for murdering more than 60 million people in the implementation of Karl Marx's slogan, 'from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.' Anyone who defends any of these, or any variation of them, on the grounds of their 'good intentions' is an immoral (NOT 'amoral') enabler of the ACTUAL (not just the proverbial) road to hell." -- Rick Gaber

Just Don't Know What To Say Joe
Those 1,300 to 1,500 or so super elites running the world are causing all the trouble, huh? And here I thought Robert and Hal were the big problem. Goes to show you what I know.

Here are the elites ruining this nation!
Pres. & V.P. 2
Members of Congress 535
Cabinet Heads 12
Supreme Court 9
Joint Chiefs of Staff 5
State Governors 50
Party leaders Dem & GOP 100
University Presidents 75
Business Leaders 100
Big Bankers 75
Union,other NGO leaders 75
MSM 75
Internationalists Bigs 100
Other world leaders 100

Total Elites 1,313

That's it folks, 1,300 (maybe 1500) or so elites who are running the world and deciding whether or not America remains a free and sovereign nation, or just another cog in the new world order/one world government socialist utopia.

Are we going to vote the lesser of two evils again or will this be the time we stand up to reclaim the inheritance the elites have stolen from us?

Please visit my website JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG and find out about a dozen independent candidates who can and will do a better job of serving "we the people" and the nation than any of the elites from either party will ever do. Thanks, Joe

People magazine is a "yellow" magazine published by...TIME!

For Georgetwin, Nam65-66, JAG CA
Time CAN, in a way be used as TP--as in lining for a squat-over toilet (perfectly meeting Georgetwin's 14:47 post).

Good column Cal
The previous weeks' Time front page of the historic planting of the flag on Iwo Jima and replacing the flag with a tree was an insult to the truly heroic marines who gave their lives in defense of this country. Only a truly pathetic lib would equate their "fight to save planet earth" with the honorable soldiers of this country. If you cannot find true evil to fight in this world you invent a cause to fight for!

Oil companies and evil republicans who love to see little children starve must have started to use live ammunition and I just do not understand the horror of it all.

As Gerogetwin says the only proper use of such a rag is toilet tissue=crap and crap!

Nam65-66
Think of the poetic nature of it, Crap on Crap :)!

Mark Twain once walked past a tombstone on which was written "Here lies a politician and an honest man."

"Heavens," he said, "two men buried in the same grave!"

Speaking of Times Magazine ...
There used to be a good news magazine called Insight. It was completely different than most because it actually reported the news fairly. Very little editorilizing at all. They just told you what happened and let you make up your own mind.

Time Magazine bought them out, primarily because they made Time look very bad in contrast. I had about six months left on my Insight subscription but decided to let it ride since it was too much trouble to cancel. Two months later the magazine cancelled. In return for my remaining four month subscription, Time gave me a three year Time subscription.

It just shows the real comparison of Time magazine to real news.

Honest Politicians
The definition of an honest politician is one who STAYS bought.

Time magazine...
...is much too slick to be used a toilet paper. That is an insult to the Scott Paper Company.

TIME Magazine
Is only useful if youe have an occupied bird cage or are out of toilet paper.

A list of
influential magazines would not include Time. Who cares what they write?

influence
I laughed when I saw Time's self serving list (I get it free, and it still costs to much). The people closet to us influence us in more ways than we know but I still seek to be influenced by Jesus, but I am a hard case. R 10 for once I agree with you about most of the world not caring about this silly list.

Agree with Cal, Upland William and AudiR
Time Magazine. A waste of time (no pun intended) and money but still slightly better than Newsweek.

Notice how slim those rags have become? The Sunday funny papers are thicker for Pete's sake! By the way, both magazines should have the folllwing disclaimer: "This publication is owned and operated by the Democratic Party".

I guess this is the column we put...
...our likes and dislikes in writing.

After all,it is our likes and dislikes that have the most interest to us.Audi and William have posted theirs and here is mine:Beer.

Stops at the Shore
One of the advantages of travel is that it shows Americans that the world does not end at American shorelines and that stuff like NA$CAR and Baby Bumps of Celebrities are really NOT of any interest to the vast majority of the world.

Just for one example, every four years the entire world is focused on World Cup Soccer, except for the people in the USA who remain focused on watching armor plated 1960s vehicles hurtle round and round hoping that most of them will crash.

In June of the last World Cup year, Zinadine Zidan was far more influential in the world outside the borders of America than anybody on Time Magazines silly list, even though nobody in America would know him if they were, um, head-butted by him.

Hardly anybody in the world cares about 99 of 100 people on that list. Americans do not even know who is on the list of the world.

Definition
I stopped reading Time years ago so I have no fist-hand knowledge of this list. From the examples given here, this list seems to be about those people who are in the spotlights of media attention. It's just one more example of the navel-gazing that reigns in the media world.

Cal's examples of those who influence at the core of life, one person at a time, are spot on.
