Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

WOODSTOCK, VT. — The Wall Street Journal, no left wing publication, reports that Republicans may soon lose the votes of some economic conservatives. In part, it’s because of the unending war in Iraq and social policies they don’t like, but they might swallow hard and continue to vote Republican anyway if GOP fiscal policies did not mimic the Democrats when it comes to the deficit and spending.

Maybe what the GOP needs is a fall foliage trip to Vermont where there is an oasis in a desert of fossilized ‘60s liberalism. You might not think so at first glance because here, someone seems to have pushed the “pause” button on the Age of Aquarius.

A trip to local bookstores is like visiting Democratic National Committee headquarters. No, that’s not quite accurate. It’s more like visiting MoveOn.org headquarters. Buttons that say “Impeach Cheney First” compete with bumper stickers with messages like “Freedom of Religion Means Freedom FROM Religion” and “Never Have Sex with a Pro-Lifer.”

The most conservative book I could find was one by Jimmy Carter. There are “EmbarrassMints” with a picture of President Bush on the lid of the confection tin. I bought an Elvis Impersonation Kit just for fun. You get the idea.

President Bush has avoided Vermont during his presidency, but he might want to consider leading a pilgrimage of Republican candidates back to a little hamlet just down the road, which produced a Republican president with ideas his party desperately needs.

That hamlet is Plymouth Notch and that president was Calvin Coolidge. Today’s Republicans seem to have an identity crisis. Their focus groups and pollsters have been unable to tell them what they believe. Sen. John McCain is an Episcopalian who wants to become a Baptist, but won’t “convert” until after the election, lest it seem like opportunism. Rudy Giuliani is pro-choice, but promises to name judges who interpret the Constitution as written and doesn’t care if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. Fred Thompson believes the opposite of what he said he believed a very short time ago. Ditto Mitt Romney. Those GOP candidates who have been consistent in their convictions — like former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, Sen. Sam Brownback and even Rep. Ron Paul — are back in the pack. Does that say more about us than it does them?

The president ought to visit Vermont and Coolidge’s birth and burial place. It looks pretty much the way it did when Coolidge lived there and visited as president. The state and private contributors (including me as I serve in an unpaid advisory capacity) have kept it that way.

Coolidge has received a bad rap from historians like Arthur Schlesinger Jr., comedian Will Rogers and the columnist H.L. Mencken. But his wisdom survives precisely because it transcends generations. At a time when people are busy looking for “new” ideas, Coolidge — whom historian Paul Johnson has called the last president of the 19th century — speaks immutable truths.

On taxes, how could any modern Republican improve on this pearl from Coolidge: “Collecting more taxes than is absolutely necessary is legalized robbery.”

In a rebuke to the “progressives” who engage in class envy and class warfare, while seeking to redistribute other people’s wealth, Coolidge instructs: “Don’t expect to build up the weak by pulling down the strong.”

There’s something for the “law and order” crowd that might reduce the prison population and improve neighborhood safety: “I sometimes wish that people would put a little more emphasis upon the observance of the law than they do upon its enforcement.”

One of my personal favorites is: “Industry, thrift and self-control are not sought because they create wealth, but because they create character.” Ah, character. It was taught in Coolidge’s era. It has been largely abandoned in ours.

Maybe that’s why Coolidge warned in his July 5, 1926 speech on the meaning of the Declaration of Independence about the consequences of forgetting things that matter most: “we cannot continue to enjoy the result, if we neglect and abandon the cause.”

Yes, President Bush should lead his fellow Republicans to Vermont to study the thoughts and principles of Calvin Coolidge, though they might wish to stay out of the bookstores.

The Green State Turns Red
I used to be proud of Vermont and its rock-ribbed citizens who, although never affluent, displayed independence and an old fashioned integrity that represented the best of the American spirit. Unfortunately, pot-smoking refugees from the Sixties and Seventies took over the Green Mountain state and turned it into a socialistic, atheistic backwater, some of whose citizens are actually considering seceding from the American union. One wonders how it would survive as an independent country when environmental wackos prevent most industries from moving in and when many of its citizens receive Social Security payments from the federal government. Cal Coolidge must be spinning in his grave at this once proud state reduced to a commune for environmental wackos and pathetic pot-smoking socialists.

Northeast Kingdom Nutroots
Vermont has been trying to seceed(sp.?) from the US for years. They're actively making that bid again.I recommend the Mothership be fired up and take these folks to a universe Far Far away.(one can only hope)

Thanks for this article
Good write up on Calvin Coolidge whose life was filled with character unlike the republican elects who seem not interested in taking stands on important issues.

the beauty is only on the surface
The once ruggedly independent Vermonters have been replaced by NYC, Connecticut and NJ liberals. These transplants have reshaped Vermont into a liberal bastion. Enacting legislation that prevents the type of ingenuity that gave Vermont it's character. It is no longer the state of my youth, with it's strong willed and deeply patriotic people. Oh, the physical beauty is still there, but the beauty of it's people is only a fading memory. Jerseyvet is right, if Vermont seceded from the States, it would flounder and disappear into oblivion. For that is the tragedy and legacy of liberalism.

Read my mind
Cal, you read my mind. Coolidge was also one of our most intelligent presidents. He loved animals too.
One of your points has been something I have been contemplating for some time. Why are Ron Paul, Sam Brownback and Mike Huckabee always called second teer? They are top drawer to a lot of Americans. I am supporting Ron Paul, because he is truly conservative. Last night ABC did a nice positive story on him. It was great to see the facts
and not a slanted hit piece.
The GOP is slowly becoming the Whig Party, an elite bunch presenting someone other than the average American. The last time this happened, the Republican party started.
Time for another history lesson?

the United States of America
has outlived its "united"; it is time to let the dividing begin. I'm sure the core states of the CSA would not only do so but build a very successful nation in short order. If the Liberals of the Northeast who keep electing US-haterz like Ted Kennedy and those of the "left coast" who can't manage more than Pelosi and Boxer want to join with Mexico (or allow enough of the third world in this hemisphere to walk up without any regard of national boundaries and overtake their new Liberal "Edens"), then let them and more power to them in their new paradise!
If the USA divides, there will be many offshore oil riggs on the Mass and Calf coasts before the ink dries!

Vermont must be the Watermelon State
Green on the outside, Red on the inside.

Green Mountains polluted by libs.
__You are reading the title of my post from a Vermonter born of the blood, sweat, and tears, of true Vermont. The liberal left moved in, and took advantage of its population that, would bend over backwards to help a person in need. Real Vermonters do not have a voice in that state, has it allows non-resident college students, to have a voice in local elections. I have also heard the voice of, out of state, second home owners, having an impact on local ordainances, and regulations. Vermonters are being unduly taxed for the la la crowd to have their own vacation resort state. The natural beauty of Vermont is still there, has out of state interest insures there is no growth, unless they allow it. The beauty, the strength, and the independance, Coolidge voiced, and Vermonters lived, is long gone. Polluted with the ben dover, and take it, while I get mine, grease my palms, liberals.

RE: CAT
Blue STATES might be what you claim, but blue VOTERS are not.

According to Gallup polling data, conservative/Republican presidential candidates have won the majority of the college educated vote EVERY election except for 1 (JBL's re-election landslide) since they started such polling (1952...the average margin is something like 60% of college educated vote conservative/Republican). Also, conservatives/Republicans have won the vote of those who make more than the median income in every election except for the LBJ re-election since 1952.

On the other hand, in EVERY election since 1952, Democrats have won, OVERWHELMINGLY, the vote of those who never graduated high school (average something like 80% vote Democrat), and those who are the lowest income earners.

Oh, and my personal favorite, according to every survey ever conducted, somewhere between 70% and 95% of all convicted felons would vote Democrat were they not prohibited from voting (Google "If Felons Could Vote" for an example).

So how does it feel to consistently win the votes of the stupid, the useless, and the criminals?

CATastrophe-leftoid talking point bigot
“The Blue ‘Staters’ are generally more intelligent and better-educated and in“ … That sentence speaks 'staters' for itself. “Rednecks with outhouses,” seems to be race based myopic, And CATastrophe would appoint our next President and first lady, how thoughtful. And I suppose you would tell the GOP who live in Blue ‘staters’ up north, to move to the southern 'staters' where they belong? That's so like you.

Bush
Bush doesn't have a clue. He grew up rich and spoiled and never had to exhibit those qualities. He has no clue what it would take to succeed without his inherited advantages, nor does he care what effect his policies have on us humble middle class citizens. We're all toys to him, just as we are toys to the left wing ideologues.

It's sickening to have to choose between being a rich boy's toy and the toy of a utopian maniac.

And what are we going to do with this crop of candidates?

Just the facts
Although much of what the Democrats want is beyond the Constitution (a largely forgotten document), they are at least faithfully representing their constituency...people described above as the stupid, the useless, and the criminals. Republicans don`t represent much of anyone. Those of us who believe in God and the rule of law, the traditional family, those who serve in the military, the productive citizenry, we have no political party. If we don`t get one soon, we won`t exist and neither will America. We are incredibly naive if we believe otherwise.

__The liberal ideologs are an island of themselves. An ideology withdrawn from fellowship, communion, or association with the principles that enabled this Republics prosperity. A secession dividing the unity of this nation for personal passions, and pleasure. We hear their factitious voices, defending their factious actions, that seek to undermine "We the People" They find their security in the right of personal behavior, personal pleasure, and personal prosperity. An island supplied, and maintained, by others, with mother government making sure the supply train continues.

Fiscal cons. should be reminded
Bush' tax cuts have lowered the deficit under 2% of GNP. If his policies continue through 2010, it's possible that the def. will be zero against GDP. (That is not the nat. debt.)

Giuliani cut NYC taxes 20% and halved welfare. To continue Bush' economs., the Reps. need to nominate Giuliani.

Dems. have already created another/new $500 billion in spending since Jan., altho' no way to implement the "programs--whatevers" since no spending leg. has passed.

Reps. since they forgot the Contract with Am. and "leading" under Bush have spent enough all on their own. Another dose of 60s' liberalism with Clinton-Obama and a Dem. Congress should finally work up enough steam to simply bankrupt the entire country.

The greens and enviros would support that. They don't want energy use. They don't want to drill for oil or build nuclear anytjing. Am., the greatest eco-financial-military-industrial nation the world has ever seen, can finally achieve negative carbon footprint status and give up history to the Chinese.

Movealong. and the Daily Krap would be ecstatic, until the elect. went off and their web servers died.

goin' to Vermont
I'm going to VT in a week and a half. Thank's for the Coolige tip.

The Free State Initiative was started a few years ago by libertarian-minded folks. Their goal is to find enough people of like mind to move to a state with a population small enough that they could affect the politics of that state.

They ultimately chose NH and a few thousnd people have actually moved there. Unfortunately, they are competing with liberals who are moving up from MA. The same thing is happening to my state, Colorado, as liberals flee CA because of its high taxes and massive Third World migration (white flight).

Liberals cannot lie in the beds in which they shat, so they find clean sheets to soil in another bed.

renny, + the survivors
__We watch the factions, enviros, greenies, move-off not on.org, etc., blather their self passions, and those with the wisdom to see the results of their actions await. Survivors they are not. I would love to see some of those people live without the personal luxuries they enjoy. They won't come knockin' I my door, 'cause they will not be eating off my table.

What part of 1% support don't you understand? You still haven't told me when the last time the GOP nominated a sitting House member or when the last sitting House member was elected as president.

You enjoy supporting lost causes do you?

As a Mississippian I get a little weary of these constant digs such as "rednecks with outhouses". Many of us are college educated and live in nice surburban type homes. Where I live in Northeast Mississippi we have economically boomed in the last 20 years due to good local education and the community working together to bring good jobs to the area. Also many of us read well and keep up with current events. So please enough of these low class stereotypes.

It is time for a history lesson. We can start with examining how we got into this mess and learn that "we the people" have been duped. We have been sold the big lie over and over until it became accepted as the truth.

That lie, pushed by the DEM/GOP/MSM propaganda machines is this: Only "they" can be elected, only "they" have wisdom and knowledge and experience. We have no other choice, nowhere else to go, we must vote for the lesser of two evils.

It is because of this that the two parties have managed to accrue a virtual lock on power for themselves. Instead of leadership, we get partisanship.

There is only one way out, only one way to break this hold on power by these two elite parties, deny them that which they desire above all else, the Presidency! That will get their attention right away.

If you would like a further explanation and description of this situation, how we got there and how to get out, visit my website, JOEOLIVAFORPRESIDENT.ORG. Why not, what's to lose? These hypocritical, elite aristocrats have already stolen our inheritance. but you should believe we can reclaim it, because we can! Thanks, Joe

Wilson54, you aren't going to convince
the Catastrophe (perfect name for it) as it has a closed mind and does not listen to reason or facts. The tin foil blocks out all rational thought.

Georgetwin...
Here in KY, we have something along the lines that you described in your 11:58am post. The same political party has controlled this state since the jurASSic period (reference to the mule party intended). The really sad thing is that our local liberal rag, the Lexington Herald-Leader, complains about how backward the state is yet continues to endorse the Democrats that made it this way. Sometimes I'd like to slap 'em upside the head, ala Bugs Bunny to Elmer Fudd, and shout, "WAKE UP!"

Waste of time
The GOP may as well suck up to San Francisco. Vermont is talking about seceeding. Some of us think that's a good idea. The people up there are so nuts that they protect child predators. Let them become part of Canada. There would be that many less nutcases in the Country.

FROG
I grew up in West Virginia, home of Senator Looney Bird. NOTHING has changed in YEARS and now he votes WITH THE ECO-LIBS against the interests of HIS OWN CONSTITUENTS! I Live in Maryland now, the MORONS here just elected a CLINTONISTA (Martin O'Malley) who plans to raise taxes ACROSS THE BOARD. The EXODUS is starting here. As soon as my pension is vested, I WILL JOIN IT!

Lolo, are you in Michigan?

In the 80s, under john Engler, Michigan's economy was the model for the country. We had low unemployment, large growth in small business, low property taxes, and good environmental policies.

Under our wack-job former canadian governor, we're now the laughing stock of the nation.
Unemployment is twice the national average, Businesses are moving out in mobs. She threatened to shut the state down to get her latest crippling tax hike through. And while democrats are supposed to be the "Environmental" party, our illustrious governor is Raping our state forests to pay for her socialist programs.

Across the road from my house used to be pristine forestland. Now it's a huge field full of stumps.

I told my wife on Nov 8 of '06 that in about 6 months the people of this state would wake up and say,"What the hell did we do in november?"
Well I was a couple months off. And we have 3 more years for her to Really screw things up!

Want to see what America will look like if the dems get full control? Take a good look at what they've done to Michigan!

Maybe a liberal state, but...
In Vermont, you don't need a permit to carry a handgun for self defense...at least they got that part right.

Vermont allows prisoners to vote
Right there is one example among several of why the state has a problem.

I'm all for allowing convicted felons to vote after they've done their time (that should please some of the outlaws in the family tree), but by allowing just about anyone who crosses the state line to vote, Vermont has really shot themselves in the foot.

There are many places that Republican candidates ought to visit if they want to reconnect with what conservative voters believe and want to accomplish. Vermont and New Hampshire's hamlets are a good starting point, but most of the fly-over states and Alaska shouldn't be ignored. Alaska only has three votes, but presidential candidates shouldn't assume they will always be Republican. We are one of those states that have flirted with the idea of secession because we feel that the US government allows the rest of the country to treat us like their frozen "banana" republic, taking billions of oil and giving back only small advantages. A conservative candidate that actually addressed our concerns would go a long way.

Neither should Republican candidates ignore conservative sections of "red" states. California has many conservative voters, they just don't live in the cities. My MIL who lives in NH, but has friends and family in Mass, says most of Western Mass is conservative, church-going folks. Republican candidates should be speaking to all of us, trying to find out what we really want. I think they've lost that feeling. Maybe they never had it and they were just faking it. Regardless, as a registered non-partisan conservative voter, I am under no obligation to vote for a Republican candidate unless I like what they represent. I'm still waiting!

Error! I mean blue not read
Today is an error-filled day.

nomopetz you are correct
__Gun issues do raise the ire of real Vermonters. I believe even ex-gov queen Dean knew better than to ruffle the feathers of gun owners in Vt. It has always amazed me that they let developers build, and destroy, game habitat, and those tree huggers, living in them, wonder why they see no wild game. Then they blame it on the hunters, and post their lands, in an attempt to create their idilic playground. Vermonters have paid dearly for accepting neighbors with open arms. The citizens of America can either sit back, and watch our Unity of state be destroyed, or start using that big stick we carry. We are the boss of politicians, and not their puppets. The Constitution of this nation gives us the authority, and government reps are obligated to that authority. It's a permit that gives law abiding Vermonters the authority to carry without a special permit.

Old Vampire Dude
So this guy goes to Vermont, walks into a bookstore, quotes a little Coolidge, and then tells Republicans to visit Vermont. Wow, what a great story.

If the author needs examples of how fed up people are with Bush, go stand on the corner.

Jackpine Savage
I hear nothing but horror stories from my Aunt who lives in Clinton Township. It's really bad there. I'm a big Redwings fan and I read the Detroit News this morning about the game last night. They didn't even have a sellout. Some people attributed that to the bad economy and the fact that alot of people can't afford to go to the games anymore.
I think I mentioned that Rush Limbaugh even had a piece about Michigan.

sheepdog
Yeah, Granholm is slowly turning Michigan into a "Worker's Paradise", I figure that by the time her term is up, we'll have a Hammer & Sickle in our state flag. Other than Detroit, Michigan is a Red state, I sure wish they'd seceed along with vermont.

The running joke in the state anymore is "Would the last person to leave the state, please turn out the lights."

So far Granholm has chased about 20,000 jobs out of the state, but she celebrated the fact that she bribed Google to locate an office in the state and created a total of 1000 new jobs.

How deluded do you have to be to Celebrate a total loss of 19,000 jobs? Of course her answer to the dilemma is to Raise Taxes! "gee, our state is hemhorraging jobs, business is leaving as fast as they can load the trucks, I know, Let's Raise Taxes!

TGIE Thank God I'm (self)Employed!

You Ain't seen Nuthin' Yet
Believe it or not Granholm ran on the above statement and WON! How retarded are the UAW members in this state???

Her actual quote is "If you like what I've done so far, You Ain't Seen Nuthin' Yet"
And she has been proving that statement right.

Hey a democrat that actually keeps her promises!

It's pretty sad when the once great state of Michigan, the home of General Motors, ford and chrysler, has become nothing more than a Warning to everyone else in the country. :op

Vermont should secede
Vermonters do have the right idea regarding secession. Since the days of Lincoln, the federal government has taken on more and more power with each administration, until today we have a totally out-of-control monster in Washington, DC.

Individual states have every right to secede from the Union, despite what the tyrant Lincoln said and did. Just as they had the right to accede to the Union (by approving the Constitution), so they have the right to secede if they find the central government has become tyrannical.

The best way to return power to state and local governments is to have states secede and go their own way. Will Washington accept this? Not at this point. If Vermont seceded at 8 AM, the federal troops would be in Montpelier by noon. But this would not happen if Americans had the discussion about secession and approved the concept in overwhelming numbers, as well they should.

Paolo is Right!
Paolo is absolutely correct. New York, and Virginia both reserved the right to regain their natural independence if they believed that their rights were being trampled under the government of the Constitution. We hear a lot about this being a free country, but you are not truly free unless you can leave. The only effective counter to usurpation is leaving the union. Vermont and the Free State Project in New Hampshire are to be applauded at applying good old fashioned Yankee ingenuity to the growing problems of an out of control, overly consolidated national government.

Wonder if they'll find better politician
Will they be stuck with Giuliani or Clinton for their President if they succeed at seceeding? If they get to elect candidates they like instead of somebody they don't want to vote for, might be worthwhile to move up there! What if we all got to do this 'secede' thing? Possibilities....

Interesting article
I must say I know little about Calvin Coolidge, but this article made me want to learn more.
