Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

With the House debating this week how much "non-binding" grief to lay on President Bush about Iraq, I e-mailed a soldier friend of mine for his impressions of the increasingly amplified protests.

Army Sgt. Daniel Dobson, 22, of Grand Rapids, Mich., is on his second tour in Iraq. I asked him what he thinks of the growing opposition to the war. Writing from Mosul, he says he appreciates the freedom Americans have to protest, but adds:

"The American military has shown a stone-cold professional veneer throughout the seething debate raging over Iraq. Beneath that veneer, however, is a fuming, visceral hatred. We feel as though we have been betrayed by Congress."

Sgt. Dobson believes the military is being hamstrung against an enemy with no reservations or restrictions:

"It is our overwhelming opinion that we have not been allowed to conduct the war to the fullest of our capability; neither do we feel that we should pull out because of a lack of results.' War is not a chemistry set with predetermined outcomes or complications. With a great army matched with an equally cunning enemy, we find ourselves in a difficult, but winnable fight. We do not seek results; rather, we seek total and unequivocal victory."

It's been a while since anyone spoke of "victory." Critics ask war supporters to define the word. Sgt. Dobson makes an effort: "That victory is close at hand. With nearly 80 percent of all terrorist and insurgent activity within 50 miles of Baghdad, the sheer thought of not taking out this stronghold is madness. If we can eliminate 80 percent of terrorist activity, the war is nearly won. To throw away a battle of this magnificent importance would be to waste the suffering and the sacrifice of American service members."

What of the effect on the troops from anti-war remarks on the streets and in Congress? Some assert it doesn't hurt troop morale. Sgt. Dobson disagrees:

"The question has been posed to me recently what congressional resolution hurts troop morale the most. No doubt we would be happy to come home tomorrow. But the thought is bittersweet. Most service members would tell you the same thing: there is no honor in retreat Š and there is no honor in what the Democrats have proposed. It stings me to the core to think that Americans would rather sell their honor than fight for a cause. Those of us who fight for (peace) know all too well that peace has a very bloody price tag."

To make his point, he tells a story: "An army once marched on the great city of Rome. The emperor, fearing for the future of the Roman Empire, sent the Empire's greatest warrior to the camp of the general to negotiate the cessation of hostilities. After several hours with the general, he asked the warrior just how much he loved Rome. Without thinking, the warrior rose and walked to a fire and stuck his right hand in the flames until it was completely burned away. This,' the warrior said is how much all Romans love Rome.' The general, struck with fear, said that if all Romans should have the same spirit as this warrior, he could not afford war with Rome, and so retreated back to his homeland.

"I fear that when questioned of their love for country, many Americans would shy from the flames. It breaks our hearts to see our nation, which was more of a Union on Sept. 12, (2001) fall to such petty bickering. No longer are we (one) out of many, but have fallen from one into many. We on the front lines long to see the white-fisted, purple-faced, raging hatred for our enemies that we saw on the morning of the 12th. We long to see America seeking victory as much as we do"

Sgt. Dobson has another wish beyond the desire to come home and a successful ending to the conflict:

"We need to drop the politics and get back to what really matters: Our nation and its future. The question, therefore, lies in what will leave scars on our national spirit; a war in Iraq, or a war between Americans..."

To the recurring question about patriotism and policy, Sgt. Dobson replies: "I would never presume to call anyone's love for country into question I ask the same of you. Truly our nation's honor is at stake, and we have been given the opportunity to put our hand to the flame. Should we now, in our moment of testing, shy from it? When asked how much we love our country, should we call retreat? No, we stand at a moment of great truth, let us now show our enemies just how much we love America and our way of life. Let us show them our love of country is as great as it ever was."

Pro, or anti-war, you've got to admire Sgt. Dobson and the other virtuous and committed young men and women our military attracts.

the dark side has clouded their vision
three cheers for the sgt!
he and some others here get it.
and if congress doesn't get it's act together soon,
we are effectively done as a nation.

the people of islam are not here to integrate and make nice. their goal is total world domination.
it says so in their 'holy' book.
it's a take no prisoners, kill them if necessary, fight to the end. and the only end they will stop at is complete elimination of 'the infidels'.

that is, if you don't already know, you and me.
christians, jews, hindus, buddhists, mormons,
zen freaks, pencil woirshipers, etc.
it doesn't matter, if you don't bow to allah...
off with your head.

i would like just one news anchor, commentator, or politician to get off of the pc soapbox and speak the truth (although they probably don't know it).
there are a few out there that do; such as hal lindsey, brigitte gabriel, walid shoebat, ann coulter.

this is a fight to the death.
the muslims will not accept negotiation, partial victory, or defeat. they will do anything including flat-out lying to abtain their goal as mohammed did to capture mecca.

this country is going right in the crapper with the anti-american filth spewing out of the likes of jihad jane, bill maher, nancy 'i'm the speaker now' pelosi, jack 'surrender' murtha, cindy ' how long can i milk this party out' sheehan, john 'flip-flop' kerry, and a million others.

wake up america!
the sgt is correct, we must win this war.

Their are marathons...
1legwarrior

Glad to hear that your attitude pertaining to your disability is very positive.

Congratulations on doing the NYC Marathon, and no matter where you finished, I consider you a winner just for participating. More proof that a good man cannot be kept from being competitive. Your words and attitude kick butt and always remember that you have a friend, somewhere in America, who feels that you are a very special person. Thank you and all the other vets who paid a dear price for Liberty and Freedom!

Over the years, those who care, pick up the price tag and while trying to read that paid price, find thier vision is impaired by so much blood on that tag, and trying to focus is made even more difficult because of tears in our eyes and pain in our heart.

Bless then all, Bless them all,
The long and the short and the tall...

Let Congress read clearly, the old Nam observation. "All gave some, but some gave all!" This time you numb, dumb and brain dead twits, try not to do more damage than you already have. Take the muzzles off the Dogs of War and get the hell out of their way! Try the new American saying, "Git 'er done!"

Re: Out of One, Many
Reading Sgt. Dobson's post brings back memories of attending lectures from a prof I once had who was a Viet Nam vet. Even in front of a largely San Francisco class, he was treated like a rock star and viewed as a hero, respected not only for the contributions he made with his post-military career, but also the sacrifices he made over a quarter of a century ago. It was almost like if you appreciated his life in the moment you were compelled on some more primal level pause and reflect on what it meant for all those who served to risk their lives in the name of a cause greater than themselves.

I guess what I'm trying to convey is that even with the country as divided politically and culturally as it is, your contributions are valued and appreciated . . . your are in my prayers - God Bless!

Legitimate or Bogus War?
As a Staunch Conservative Christian Republican do I hear it said that you fellow conservatives wish America was a dictatorship? It seems like you are more and more the echo of this words spoken so long ago? "Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide". By John Adams (letter to John Taylor, 15 April, 1814)

However, this one quote: "Overgrown military establishments are under any form of government inauspicious to liberty and are to be regarded as particularly hostile to Republican liberty". By, George Washington. Dwight D. Eisenhower spoke similar words in his farewell address. Both of this men would die immediatly were they to rise and find America's horrendous war machinery cirlcing the entire globe, while America has been invaded in the meantime without firing a shot and actually aidded by millions of so called good America patriotic citizens in complete violation of laws, by another nation where its language is now equal to English.

Nobody, but nobody, will ever prove that the present war meets the Founding Fathers expectations, period! It is the bogus war of all wars ever. Unless America quickly takes a 180 degree turn around, it will remain on the same strange road as all previous Empires did, including the British, creating suffering and misery etc. Maybe God Himself may stop America with his second comming. America might have been God's last experiment with humans to make this a better world, but find it completely on the devils side once again.

Just one more issue: Was it moral for the USA to go to bed with Saddam, as pictures dated Dec. 19-20, l983 show Mr. Rumsfeld shaking hands with this criminal he was already at that time? Yes, or No, Mr. Thomas, may I ask of you? God will never forget this evil by America no matter how dep it is now under the rug. God will be especially hard on the likes of you Mr. Thomas for not airing this, but instead airing less weighty matters.

Nee
I've heard of the group you talk about. I'm not running yet, but I'm working on it. I don't think I will ever run a ten miler though. I didn't like to run before. I'd rather do a marathon on my handcycle. I've actually done the NYCMarathon 2 times.

Loyal Democrat, Sgt Dobson,
and all of you who have served and are serving our country, thank you for your sacrifice. My son and daughter-in-law are both in the military and my son recently returned from his second tour in Iraq. My husband, father, father-in-law, sister, and all my brothers-in-law are veterans and I am so honored to be able to say so.

Like many of you I am sick and tired of some politicians' careless and dangerous attitudes toward the people fighting this war on terror. I'm tired of their refusal to take this war seriously. We need to make sure the people in Washington who "represent" us truly know how we feel. We need to be louder and more persistent than the jihad jane types. (thanks for your counter-protesting, nee).

Thanks again to all of you fighting for our freedom.

A few Comments and Observations
First let me mention that Sgt. Dobson wrote the words that many of us feel in our hearts, and we do indeed mention them frequently to friends, writing to politicians who never seem to havet he time, or inclination to write back. As you can tell, I also use blogs, petitions, forwarding of many messages and a lot for a 76 year old vet.

Old Sarge says it true, if only the politicans would stay the hell out of the way and let the war be fought to be won, our nation would not be considering entering the policies of a third world nation!

There are many of the old vets, that cannot fathom that wars can be fought without the thought of victory. This is like placing boxers ind a ring, and forbidding them to punch hell out of each other. Note that while Truman did wrestle with his conscience, he dropped the bomb to save at least a million lives, on both sides of the battle. How many of us would take on that kind of responsibility and tell them to drop Little Boy and Fatman?

I back our troops all the way! I support my country, no matter who is President. Naturally, I am more pleased with some Presidents and Congresses than others. I am neither Democrat or Republican, but an American. I love and support my country and for those of you who do not, know that my American fanny is awaiting the warm caress of your kiss. I want the war done and over with, but only when it is won, not capitulated. Are we going to lose more American boys? Of course we will, one cannot fight war without incurring casualties. This war is about many things, a couple of which are patently obvious. 9/11, and the terrible chemical deaths imposed on people in his own land. He and his sons were everybit the equal of Hitler and his Nazi thugs. The prison death camps were evidence of their brutality and atrocities. If we did not swear, "NEVER AGAIN", at the end of WWII, and against after each war, it is only more proof that the world might not be a perfect place, but someone had to clean up the mess left behind by the politicans of yesteryear. One son is trying to correct the sins of his father now! I went into Military service to give evidence that our country does care about the liberty and freedom of other nations. Assk France, a two time recipient of the blood of our American boys, along with those of our allies. Yet they badmouth the United States. at each and every opportunity they get. Let me remind the arrogant French, that if they can speak French in their nation today, they can thank Allied troops for that blessing.

Sgt. Dobson, please accept the humble thanks of the patriotic Americans, and do not doubt for a nanosecond that we do not feel our deepest gratitude for your sacrifices. We pray for your survival and those of you who can come home with the heads held high, for they have supported all the principles that has made America great for so many years. God bless all those men and women of all the allied nations who stand shoulder to shoulder with our troops. If Iran comes into the war, I wonder if they are going to use some of the WMD that Saddam gave them for safekeeping or did he transfer them all to Syria? Thank you for all your wonderful posts, and you know who you are!

Out of One, Many
When I originally wrote this, it was in an email to many of my good friends, and this was the original title. Although Cal covers all of what I originally said, I don't think that I really said everything that I, and for that matter, many of my fellow soldiers feel. The most disheartening thing for all of us is seeing our nation ripped apart by this war. And mind you, not entirely unwillingly. I see people, Liberal and Conservative alike, taking active steps in alienating the other half. Frankly, as horrible as September Eleventh was, the day after was a beautiful day for the American Spirit. Never in my life had I seen a Nation so united and strong. I wonder, what happened from the Twelfth of September to last Novembers' Election that caused us to fall so far from each other? Politics are politics, but I see Americans that hate Americans as much if not more than they hate our enemies, on BOTH sides of the political spectrum. Born of that American infidelity to Americans was cowardice. Sometimes it seems to me that the only sane people with citizenship are the people in uniform. I know this isn't true, however, I'm sure the point is made. I know we all love America. Never would I question that love for country. I am quick, however, to question the love for countrymen.

I ask you now, what I asked in that email. The spirit of the twelfth. Regardless of politics, let us return to an unquestionable love of country, an unwavering commitment to our national honor, and above all, a love for our fellow Americans.

I must leave you now, it seems there actually is a war here that demands with all urgency my undivided attention. God Bless you all, and God Bless America.

.
Wow, I have to admit it's kind of shocking to hear a troop say he's got a "fuming, visceral hatred" for Congress - but I respect and appreciate the honesty.

As a voice from the left though I have to be honest that his premise that those of us who are against the surge wouldn't have the guts to put their hand to the flame is just plain wrong. Like, he's basically saying he feels doubted by Congress and thinks it's because they're probably weak and if they were strong they would see that strength will win the day . . . to those in favor of the surge who believe it can be won if "we can eliminate 80 percent of terrorist activity", just how how many terrorists are there? Is it only the people with guns? Well then what if they change tactics and 'melt' into the crowd by signing up for the Iraqi army and then use their insider status to raid compounds, kidnap and behead soldiers instead? Oh wait, they already did. Well what if they 'melt' into the crowd by loading up their truck with dynamite instead of crops and use their body as the weapon instead of a gun? Oh wait, they already did that too.

The unfortunate reality seems to be that the oil gives these warring factions in Iraq less incentive to try and get along as all democracies require - both the Iraq study group and Gen. Petraeus have acknowledged that. You can't make people do something they don't want to do - nobody has that power over others unless they're willing to rule with domination and fear the way Saddam did (like comply or die). It just sounds to me like maybe this soldier doesn't agree with this assessment . . .

Folks?
Did you ever think for one minute that we may be grinding down our military while building up the terrorists? In may experience all balls and no forehead just makes casualities

Vic
On the road this week. Updated the blog and comments. Looking like a busy busy spring and may be traveling a lot. Probably have to switch to a night attack on the moonbats and club them while they sleep.

Also, good to see that BrianR is back. His rips on the libs are stuff of legend.

Thanks, Lynn,
for some very thoughtful posts, here. I don't know why, I still get amazed at the Democrat thought processes.

I really don't understand why some of these calls for shutting down the military aren't prosecuted. Freedom of speech doesn't go there. Freedom of speech carries responsibility. I can get pretty bold with the things that I say, but, I won't say things that will cause physical harm to another. Pretty simple, I think?

Here's an idea: let's let the Sgt Dobson types run the Congress, while the Congress . . . takes the front line!

Second thought: I don't want my life in the hands of the congressman on the frontlines! hmmm.... beginning to see how it feels to the real warriors.

Thank you, Sgt and all those with you. I stand in awe of your courage. I stand in great gratitude.

Don't let it be too cold...I'm a-going...somebody's gotta, right. And contrary to my monkey posting, I can actually "peacefully protest" the Sheehag. First, I get out my signs, club gitmo shirt, and eye protection. Then, I go and stand, silently while all the monkeys screech and begin spitting. I am always prepared...I don my o-d green poncho and keep on keepin' on. Then to really tick them off, friends and I will sing every single patriotic song we know...ah, free speech. Don'tcha love it!

Ah GunnyG
I've been wondering where you've been today. Yes, I saw just one time too many Bush lied posts. it set me off. I hope the weather is miserable for them. It was pretty good here today. Got up to 70 before it started raining in the afternoon. I worked out in the yard some.

Vic
Libs can't help it amigo. Their one-track mind keeps them stuck on dumbazz!

On a lighter side, liberal anti-war vermin are gonna protest in DC, with Freezing Rain in the forecast. Scuttlebutt has it that to defrost the, the Marine Corps is sending up some flamethrower crews from Quantico!

flaming moonbat shis-kabobs.

To Lynne
Yes, that's what we need. They should be required to type "Bush Lied Mantra" in the subject header so we can just scroll right past it. Also, the site will need to be programed so that it will automatically limit the posting to 50 words so it will not take long to scroll past it.

How many ignorant libtards
are we going to have to listen to who continue to spew this disgusting lie. This tired Bush lied chestnut has been disproved over and over and over and yet insane beyond any touch with reality nutcases continue to repeat it to infinity. Listen people with this nauseas spew, we are tired of hearing it. There is absolutely no way that anyone who doesn’t have a pus filled head will believe you.

The problem is......
The problem is...
The main problem is that the President lied to the public. He used intell that he knew was bad to stir up the public and when we found out that he lied to us, we no longer support his expensive adventure. We are also horrified that a man would lie the public into war and have the balls have his political spinsters say that we don't support the troops. His lies put the troops in harms way, his lies killed and maimed thousands of soldiers, his lies destroyed support for the war. You don't hear people saying that Afghanistan was a mistake, why do you think that is?

The problem is that you are so full of hate that you couldn't see the truth if it hit you in the face.

The whole world believed the "intell". There was ample evidence. We found evidence that it had been there. There is strong evidence the Russians helped move it to Syria.

Even so, with or without mistakes, which happen by the way in every conflict, war, natural disaster recovery, etc.

I like Professor Reynolds comments in a post on Iran's killing of Americans: "This has been obvious for a long time anyway, and I don't understand why the Bush Administration has been so slow to respond. Nor do I think that high-profile diplomacy is an appropriate response. We should be responding quietly, killing radical mullahs and iranian atomic scientists, supporting the simmering insurgencies within Iran, putting the mullahs' expat business interests out of business, etc. Basically, stepping on the Iranians' toes hard enough to make them reconsider their not-so-covert war against us in Iraq. And we should have been doing this since the summer 2003. But as far as I can tell, we've done nothing along these lines."

This guy gets it!

And Sgt. Dobson is right: "The question has been posed to me recently what congressional resolution hurts troop morale the most.

I've listened to some of the House debate(?) on the non-binding resolution declaring the cowardice of the United States democratic party and it is enough to make you vomit. How we've allowed the Kerry's, Kennedy's, Murtha's and their ilk to remain in congress is beyond me.

We learned this lesson in the early days of our nation when we tried paying the muslims a ransom when they were attacking our trading ships along the barbary coast and then had to go in and show them we were not going to take their crap anymore and went in and got their attention by killing a bunch of them.

We haven't learned anything from Vietnam. Wouldn't it be great to have a Patten about now?

Mosul
from Cowboy's link...."won plaudits for working closely with local leaders to stabilize the northern city of Mosul, getting involved in everything from privatization to local elections."

As I mentioned in my first post in this article, Mosul has been the scene of ethnic cleansing of Assyrian Christians and Kurds by Arab Sunni fundamentalists.

http://www.christiansofiraq.com/etcleansing.html
In the shadow of the reports and the focus on what is happening in for instance Falluja and other parts of Iraq the Islamic fundamentalists are conducting a systematic and well thought out campaign to drive out and dislodge Assyrians from the Mosul area in Northern Iraq. Assyrians in Sweden and in the rest of the world are receiving daily reports about atrocities. Assyrian women are raped, Assyrian men are decapitated, Assyrian children are kidnapped, and Assyrians are chased out of what has been their homeland for thousands of years.

http://www.truthout.org/cgi-bin/artman/exec/view.cgi/37/15011
"We never demanded that Mosul be integrated into Kurdish territory, even though Kurds have lived here for several generations. Now, the terrorists are attempting a planned strategy of ethnic cleansing there," hammers out Kak Ismet Ergushi, the big boss of security services in the Kurdish capital, who asserts that the situation is all the more difficult in that "many fighters are arriving by way of nearby Syria." In northern Iraq, an ethnic war that does not speak its name is raging.

http://www.christiansofiraq.com/Newyork%20.html
In northern Iraq, protests have repeatedly broken out over the past few days in several cities where officials claim that hundreds of thousands of citizens, many of them Kurdish Christians, were not able to vote because balloting materials arrived inexplicably late.

Stabalized? Ethnic cleansing including voter fraud is stabilized?

a grateful attitude
Just before Katrina hit with all "her" destruction, I was working in higher education. A new student just released from the military and his tour in Irag, related how elated he was just after the Iragi election. Three men approached him with tears, and shoving their finger in his face, said "Thank You" in very broken English. I can't imagine what our brave soldiers go through each day, but defeat in not an option.

another view
"Pro, or anti-war, you've got to admire Sgt. Dobson and the other virtuous and committed young men and women our military attracts." I concur 100% but add that Sgt. Dobson is but one of many. If you want another example, a few months ago I was at the local VFW when a young troop on leave from Iraq (his second tour also)was asked by the folks what they could do for him and his troops. His reply: "Get us the ***k out of there." I asked him if that view was reflected by all his mates and he said nearly half and most of those on their second and third tours. The blame for the Iraq fiasco must lie with the commander and chief no one else. It is time for drastic change in the Iraq war and time to get back to fighting the war on terror.

What makes sense?
How does bombing and killing our Kurdish allies make sense? How does that help us toward victory, when we marginalize those who believe in our mission in Iraq?

Please explain how these ROE in any way make our soldiers safer, or make the region stable.

Now explain to me why anyone would accuse me of not making sense. You're an embarrassment to intelligent people everywhere.

To george w bush
It doesn't matter what you heard someone say. The senate investigation of the intelligence leading to the war has a different timeline for the CIA and the statement about the 16 words. As a matter of fact, everything in the 16 words was true.

Victory and Defeat.
I am sick of everyone whining about bringing home the troops. Lets take a short history course on victory and defeat.
Mexican War. . . Victory. Results – Annexation of the south western part of the United States.
Spanish American War. . . Victory. Results – Annexation of the Philippines and San Juan. The Philippines were a US possession for decades; San Juan remains so today.
The Great War (WW I). . . Victory. Results – Punitive and vindictive terms of surrender forced upon Germany, the fall of the Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empires, the redeployment of all Allied troops to their home countries, thus leaving fascisms to emerge from the ashes of war. Thus WW II
World War II. . . Victory. Results – The division of Europe into East and West with the occupation of the Axis countries. US troops are still stationed in Germany, Italy and Belgium today. We also continue to keep forces in Japan today.
Korean War. Stale-mate. Results – A cease fire that has remained in effect since 1953, thus a state-of-war technically still exists between North and South Korea. US forces, again remain station there today.
Vietnamese War. Defeat. Results – After getting the assurance of a Democratic Congress that the US will fund South Vietnamese, the US forces were withdrawn, only to have the Democrats betray the word of the USA bring disgrace and shame upon this great nation as the US ambassador fled from the embassy via a UH-1 Iroquois Helicopter. “Nixon’s War” which was started and escalated by President Lyndon B. Johnson, DEMOCRAT, was brought to a disgraceful defeat. No US forces remain in Vietnam. The atrocities and massacres occurring afterwards were completely ignored by the MSM.
Lebanon Peace Keeping Mission. Defeat. Results – After the death of 241 US Marines who were sent to Lebanon to maintain peace, the US quickly pulled out giving Hezbollah a great victory. No US forces remain in Lebanon today.
Somalia Peace Keeping Mission. Defeat. Results – After the disaster of Blackhawk Down, the US quickly withdraws all US forces leaving the country under the rule of tyrannical warlords. No US forces are in Somalia today. This was also the event that inspired Bin Laden to attack the US homeland, thus causing the death of over 3000 US civilians in the worse attack ever on the United States.
What will victory look like? With the successful completion of the mission, we will remain in Iraq and continue our support of the fledgling democracy as it grows in prestige and power until the Iraqi government thanks the US for our help and says they can now stand on their own against the tyrannical leaders of Iran, Syria and the other dictatorships of the Middle East. Thus, US forces will be in the area for decades.
What will defeat look like? The US will have run away, confirming Bin Laden claim that we are weak coward who run when faced with a determined enemy. A massive massacre will sweep across Iraq. This will be completely ignored by the leftist MSM. A few fortunate Iraqis will escape to relative safety in America until the Islamo-fascist bring the war back to our homeland.
It is time we stop talking about when are troops come home and start talking about victory.

Several Comments
SGT Dobson:
HOOAH!!!!!
Very well said. It is humbling, and yet very rewarding, to know that the Army from which I retired has no need of me; it is clearly well supplied with great Americans!

Utah.
In re:Un-restricted war
The incident you point out has a great deal more to do with targeting accuracy and combat ID errors than it does (necessarily) with ROE. Nothing in what you provided convinces me that the ROE were not followed to the letter. The assh#le flyboys who took out the two Blackhawks in the No-Fly zone followed the ROE and requested and received a confirmation order to shoot down our helicopters; all based upon a faulty visual ID.

ROE do a lot to help troops under fire make decisions with morality and ethics considerations built into them. But when ROE begin to elevate all other considerations over the protection of our troops in contact, the leadership is trying too hard to do things other than win. When the ROE are briefed as legal absolutes, the violation (or misinterpretation), of which will be met with adverse judicial action, the commanders simply need to grow a pair and refuse the mission until they are given ROE their soldiers can use to accomplish missions, not merely execute them.

LD, good post!
ROE in Vietnam were less restrictive due to the foliage and the designation of free-fire zones.

I do sympathize with our troops in the field who have to operate under politically-correct ROE. There have always been politicians who don't mind sacrificing our troops in exchange for political advantage.

One thing I have never been able to understand about this war is the lack of publication of enemy casualties. A cursory look at the press releases leaves one with the impression that the only people dying in Iraq are US soldiers and Iraqi allies. Never a mention of enemy captured, wounded or killed (unless it was a high profile guy like Hussein or Zarqawi).

Can you shed some light on that policy?

George Bush
It is easy to say that someone lied, but there are certain consequences that follow that bold statement. Do you suppose that his entire administration, including Colin Powell (who's been critical, but never claimed a lie was used), was in on it? Was Bill Clinton, England, Egypt, Russia, and our CIA all in on the lie? Was Hillary, Edwards, and Kerry all in on it?

I understand your frustration with the President and his policies. Call them misguided or poorly executed, but to commit yourself to the mantra that a "lie" was used on the American people is not what you really mean...i hope.

We need a quick, strong end to this war to send a message to the radical Islamic world that the United States is not afraid of a fight and will not back down when discouraged. Whatever your political affiliation may be, this is paramount. You MUST recognize this. It is a winnable war. Optimism is the hallmark of the American experiment in democracy. Freedom is more vaulable than "being right" about Bush's mistakes.

Letter From Mosul
The sergeant is quite correct when he wonders about a fight between Americans. We are beoming progressively alienated from each other in a political, cultural and spiritual sense. The government is becoming the enemy and is taking away our freedoms, one by one e.g. McCain-Feingold bill on campaign financing. In order to get this country back to one based on our founding documents, I am afraid it may take another civil war. I see extremely few in Congres, on both sides of the aisle, who truly abide by their oath or understand what the constitution says or means. To have and not utilize the power that we have at our disposal when it is necessary will eventually lead to our demise.

nee- so once again its all the liberals
fault.

first, what about all the republicans who have come out against the surge. are they ruining the countr?
and the 70% of the american people against the surge are they ruining the country?

if bush had prosecuted this war correctly we would not even be having this conversation. but you supported him all the way without ever questioning his tactics.

lets even examine the surge.
according to Gen. patreus own insurgency plan we would need a surge close to 200000 to do the job right so again it seems as if bush is the one who does not want to win.

by the way what will victory look like?

finally, liberals are not the enemy unless you are a blame america first whiner.

ROE
The rules of engagement are set by the military powers, very true. They are currently too weak to sustain a victory. Why? Because there are those in our government and military without the stomach to do what is necessary to win. We worry so much about being PC that we handcuff our soldiers. In WWII, a letter was sent to the Pope to advise him that should the Germans hole up in a church, the church was a target. Note, he wasn't asked for permission, we informed him of what would happen.

In this I disagree with George W. When we had the Sadre(sp) forces in a mosque after the disemboweling of the soldiers (Three years ago?) he should have ordered the destruction of the mosque and all inside. NOW, anyone holding a rifle or arms of any kind, who have not been vetted to the military or police, should be considered a combatant and killed (or captured). If we don't treat it like a war, with the penalties of war, we have doomed ourselves to defeat.

I think the following two questions should be asked of EVERY Presidential candidate:

1) Do you want the U.S. to win the war in Iraq and terrorism?

2) If so, how far are you willing to go to do it?

I'd like to add one more: If you were the enemy, how far would you be willing to go to defeat the U.S.; shouldn't we be just as dedicated?

I ruin this country?
Where did I say it was an unjust war? Where did I say I didn't want the US to win this war?

What does my difference in opinion on ROE have to do with any of your ridiculous post?

Talk about guano. Take it up with Gen. Petraeus if you have a problem, but spare me your

I ruin this country nonsense.

Lynne
Thanks, and I will do that.

Old-Sergeant,
You said it well. Thank you.

Cal, you can tell Sgt. Dobson that there are people here who DO know what is at stake, who support the mission, and who have a great, great sense of gratitude. Just as the media mis-report what is happening over there, they mis-report the level of support back home.

But you will always hear about a lack of support back home because there are enemies of our country here as well.

Utah...
It is preciseley people with that attitude who ruin this Country. I heard somebody ask a libdolt "Do you want the US to win?" And the BIG pregnant pause told his answer. It was asked again and the idiot answered,"We don't deserve to win an unjust war." 'splain that one, Lucy, except you can't. ANyone with a "right" brain understands that the libs want us to fail. Well, I would put my f-ing hand in that fire, would you, if it means death to our way of life u-mor(m)on?? Would you? Please spare me the load of guano. I know the answer.

1LEG...
How are you??? Are you indeed a 1Leg Warrior? I asked once before but you may not have seen it. I run the Army Ten every year since we went into Iraq. There is a team that runs called MPIA. Missing Parts in Action. I take my hat off to them because they still kicked my two-legged a**!! They rock and so do you! Thanks...

Loyal Democrat
Airborne!! I enjoyed your perspective as well, MSR Tampa was a pain. I honestly can't remember being on it but I know many that were. Being in a BFV wasn't even that fun on the roads, even they are succeptible to RPG's, hence the screen name. My time was in Baqubah and TUZ (right between Tikrit and Kirkuk near route 1 I believe)

jerabaub
Yes the administration is responsible for the ROE. But the reason that they get put into place is because of what is percieved as the public opinion and what is spouted from places like Congress and the Armed Forces Commitee. The commitee provides oversight, and when congressmen and women on the commitee put pressure to change the rules, then the rules change. They are changed because they know if they do not then there will be investigations onevery last one of our soldiers who fired a shot and killed someone that the locals say was innocent.

utahnotmormon, you totally miss the Old Sarges point.

OUR HONORABLE MILITARY
THANK YOU SGT DOBSON FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY. I AM VERY PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN AND HAVE THE BEST OF THE BEST SERVING SO I CAN REMAIN SECURE AND FREE TO GO TO WORK AND RAISE MY DAUGHTER WITHOUT FEAR. I THANK GOD FOR ALL OF YOU, I PRAY FOR YOU, AND I PRAY FOR COMPLETE VICTORY. I DO HAVE A VISCERAL HATRED FOR THIS ENEMY, THEY ARE COWARDS AND MURDERERS. THEY ACT JUST LIKE THE BIBLE SAYS THEY WILL IN GENESIS 16:12, "HE WILL BE A WILD DONKEY OF A MAN; HIS HAND WILL BE AGAINST EVERYONE AND EVERYONES HAND AGAINST HIM, AND HE WILL LIVE IN HOSTILITY TOWARD ALL HIS BROHTERS." THEY CAN'T EVEN GET ALONG WITH EACH OTHER IN THE SAME CITY, YOU SEE IT ALL OVER THE MIDDLE EAST. THEY HATE EACH OTHER AND THEY HATE US BECAUSE WE ARE INFADELS. IT MAKES ME SICK TO MY STOMACH THAT THE SAME PEOPLE WHO OPPOSED THE VEITNAM WAR ARE THE SAME ONES WHO ARE IN OUR GOVERNMENT NOW, THEY GET ALL THE ATTENTION ON THE MEDIA, THEY HATE AMERICA AND THEY ARE THE BLAME AMERICA CROWD. ITS TIME TO GET RID OF THEM FOR GOOD. WE NEED PEOPLE WHO ARE PATRIOTIC, (YES I SAY THEY ARE NOT PATRIOTIC) AND STAND FOR WHAT IS RIGHT NO MATTER THE COST TO THEIR POLITICAL FUTURE. WE ARE HUNGRY FOR THE TRUTH AND WANT SOMEONE TO LEAD THE SAME WAY. AGAIN, I THANK ALL THE MILITARY AND THEIR FAMILIES FOR THEIR SACRIFICE SO I CAN WRITE THIS WITHOUT GETTING MY HEAD CHOPPED OFF!!

Excellent
This should be sent to all 535 members of Congress.

Roger that, Old Sergeant
My youngest is heading over there with a Marine Motor-T license to run supplies between Al-Asad, Fallujah and Ramadi. Here's hoping the re-write of the counterinsurgency manual recently performed by Generals Petreaus and Mattis goes a long way towards unleashing our guys to do what they're trained to do.

utahnotmormon
Didn't miss that class - took it in RVN 68-69. It didn't work. To provide security, you KILL terrorists. You don't have time for browsing some rule book when you're getting your A** shot off. This ain't some X-Box game, people get killed in war and that's the ONLY job combat soldiers are trained to do - kill the enemy. It is stupid to train soldiers to kill then ladle on complex ROEs to hamper their job. Yes, there are ethics that need to be considered but you can't expect someone to do this awful job (the pay sure isn't enough) while adhering to some twinkie lawyer's idea of how to conduct operations. Either kick A** and kill them there or come home and wait for them here.

Thanks
to all the brave men and women who serve in the military. Not all of the citizens are so blind that we do not realize what you are doing for our nation. May God protect you and the good Iraqi people as you fight to assure the future of that nation and of ours. Pray that the power hungry in congress will see the error of their ways and decide to honor their oath to uphold our Constitution and provide for the protection of our nation.

Cal and Sgt Dobson
Current ROE need to be corrected. Our men and women will bring victory if our policitican let them do their job.

As far as the weasels on captiol hill, they will not win this debate if WE keep their feet to the fire. Call your Congressman and your Senators and let them know your true feelings. It's time we take off the gloves in both Iraq and halls of Congress. I am ready for a fight. Our brave men and women are fighting for their lives. We need to take the fight to Congress. We owe them that much.

Cal, keep up the good work. Failure is not an option and I refuse to give up.

Old Sarge
Say what you want about me, but the new head of our military in Iraq, Gen Petraeus, is a proponent of the those ROE, so maybe you should direct your venom at him.

Counter-terrorism requires support from the population, providing them security and earning their trust. Maybe you missed that class.

cal's article and lt dobsons remarks
I believe the most powerful voice that can be heard today is that of our military who have served or who are serving. I would like to see some of our wounded and some of our military who are in the D C area visiting the halls of congress daily while this BS resolution is being argued(15 days for a piece of nothing)and not protesting, but by their action of being there show that they are being hurt by the actions of these very very stupid people who cannot connect their actions with the damage being done to the bodies and morale of these honorable young people. This would be ignored by the press, with the exception of Fox but Fox' presence would would be all the more powerful by showing this.

Un-Restricted WAR
utahnotmormon - OK, put rules in place - restrict return fire and hamper those conducting operations to the point that your own guys are in jeaporady. Know what happens next? These guys will go into "survival" mode and just try to get home - no more aggressive patrols - no more taking the lead in fire-fights. Just survival. This mode enables the enemy, kills our own guys and ensures our defeat. People like you ought to stay at home - play on your laptop - yak on your cell phone and drink your latte's. Leave fighting this war to people that know how. You're what's wrong with this country today.

Thank You
Thank you, Sgt. Dobson, and all your brothers in the military. You are truly our best and are in our hearts and prayers on a daily basis.

It shames me to see the sacrifices you, your comrades in arms, and your families make on a daily basis to accomplish your mission; and then to compare this effort to the mewlings and whinings from many back in your own country, safe and comfortable in their homes. It is humbling that you are able to maintain your professionalism, not only in the midst of a brutal war, but lacking support from a small, yet equally fanatical ragtag band at home.

We want you back with us, but understand your dedication to your calling. We point toward the day you return with your heads held high, as they should be, coming back to a hero's welcome.

God bless you.

Un-restricted war
There are reasons for ROE, trying to avoid incidents like this:

BAGHDAD, Iraq— U.S. forces accidentally killed eight members of a Kurdish security force in an airstrike and injured six more who were manning an observation point in the northern city of Mosul, Iraqi officials said yesterday.

Angry Kurdish officials said the airstrike on one of Mosul’s main roads was inexplicable.

"We don’t have any explanation for what the Americans did," said Kabir Amir Koran, of a local Kurdish party.<

In addition, ethnic cleansing of Kurds and Christians has been going on in Mosul for the past three years, with roughly 100,000 refugees from the city seeking refuge in the nearby confines of Dohak, Kurdistan.

So, I question Sgt. Dobson's claim that victory is close at hand in Mosul. Arab Sunnis have entrenched themselves with Saudi, Syrian and even Turkish support.

Sgt. Dobson
Eloquently stated Sgt.Dobson. Because it is difficult, does not mean we give up with a whimper. It is a pathetic statement that other agendas are being played out rather than all thoughts be aimed toward victory. We need all your stiff backbones to make up for the spineless. Please, keep on keepin' on!

Un-Restricted WAR
Quit the crap and conduct WAR. I endured rules such as this in Vietnam and you see the outcome. Congress - that includes donkeys and elephants - needs to decide whether this country is worth saving or not. If it is, then stop the whining and pandering to the liberal defeatists and support the military and get it done. If it isn't, then continue doing what you're doing now and we'll take a giant step toward third-world status. I hold the opinion that most of these morons in congress ought to be tried as traitors. Levin, Durbin, Murtha, Reid and the rest of their ilk are despicable losers.

rules of engagement
I understand the clamor to lay all the blame on lack of support for our military on congress.

But on the issue of ROE(rules of engagement), does not our military, in conjunction with this administration and its civilian planners within the department of defense, conceive the rules and conditions under which our soldiers engage the enemy in combat?

If these rules are too restrictive and place too many limitations upon our soldiers, then whose fault is that?

From history we know during Vietnam that LBJ himself placed limitations upon what targets our pilots could strike.

I know some here are simply incapable of assigning ANY blame to this administration, regarding the rationale for, and implementation of, this war in Iraq, preferring instead to make a bogeyman of congress.

But unless someone can clearly and specifically delineate where congress, and only congress, conceived restrictive rules of engagement for Iraq, then presumably the rules emanate from our own military and this administration.

And I suspect it is the administration, not the military, that has the final word on this issue.

To snooper
The question is "Why isn't Jihad Jane in a grave?"

A Letter from Mosul
To moniker a sentiment from Pappy above, I would like to say to SGT Dobson that even though you hear disparaging comments from our retarded malcontents in DC, the American people think of you and pray for your success daily.

In the words of Winston Churchill, "Never, never, never give up". As soon as these idiots in DC are exposed for what they are, power mongers, by the success of this surge and most assuredly through the leadership of the new Commander(s), you shall have your just deserves.

God bless you all.

A Letter from Mosul
WOW. What is it about the Leftinistra that drives them to such levels of subversive antics?

Why isn't Jihad Jane in prison?

Why isn't 90-proof Kennedy in prison for his 1983 subversive antics with the USSR's Andropov?

And why are the current cadre of democrat leaders(?) exactly the same as the northern democrats of 1863?

What part of "we must win this war" do they not understand? Do they want us to lose this war like they caused us to lose the Vietnam War?

This letter from Mosul is quite a jolt and the contents confirm data I received from a Marine in Al Anbar right after the last SOTU.

Those that speak of retreat and "let's let the President know we don't agree" (like the world doesn't know already...give me a break) is enabling our enemies...JUST LIKE IN VIETNAM, imagine that.

Political posturing for political gain is a disgrace and a laughing stock for the world to witness.

Good job...NOT!

The definition of "freedom to fight".
Just to provide a little more detail on just what is meant by more freedom to engage the enemy, I offer the following:

Late on one April night, I was part of patrol that was running down Route Tampa, the main supply road in Iraq. The misson was typical, but our rules of engagement were not. Due to an increased emphasis on reducing the potential for unintentional kills, our ROE had been modified to the point of ridiculous. Our specific orders forbade us to engage any target that was greater than 100 meters distant, and then such an engagement could only occur if the target could be taken out with a single shot with a 100% guarantee of accuracy. As our gunners were aremed with 50 caliber and 240B machine guns, the single shot possibility was out. Blend in the traveling speed and the darkness, and you have a situation that essentially eliminated our ability to return fire.

As it had been our luck to be hit by an IED on an average of one out of every three missions, we were pretty adept at determining the most likely spots where a trigger man or spotter would be hiding, at least for the command detonated varities. After we took a hit, we could lay down an effective supressive fire, thus avoiding secondary hits. This practice had managed to keep my platoon from being nailed by a secondary for the prior 11 month period.

On this night of the new ROE, I was in command of the second Humvee in line. Our column had spaced out, as was the practice at higher speeds, and as such I was able to witness the massive explosion that took out our scout Humvee. During normal times, I would have ordered my gunner to direct fire at a location that was very likely the trigger site. However, with the promise of a prison sentence for any stray shots still ringing in my ears, I did the unthinkable for a soldier: I ordered my gunner to hesitate unless a clear target emerged. I was due to rotate home in a few weeks, and a murder trial would take the fun out of the return. The result of this unprecedented delay was a secondary hit on a truck to my rear.

We were lucky that night. Though the first blast knocked out the scout truck, the other vehicle was only lightly damaged. But with our new ROE, the potential for trouble was dramatically increased. Soldiers need to have the freedom to fire back. We weren't in the habit of laying down indiscriminate fire, but out supressive fire had taken out many a trigger man or spotter, and we had never lost anything to a secondary - until the rules changed.

That is the kind of limitations that frustrate soldiers. That is what is meant by freedom to fight. I personally experienced the downside of the limitations set forth by politicians that curry favor with the enemy in an attempt to discredit their domestic opponents. Let our soldiers fight. There will fewer soldiers killed, and the tide of the war will turn.

Or is that what worries certain ambitious politicians?

Lack of Statesmen
I must point out to Sgt Dobson that it is not just Democrats providing fuel to the terrorists, it is Republicans as well.

Just ask Virginia Senator Warner what outcome he hopes for with his version of a "non-binding" resolution, other than re-election.

I salute you Stg Dobson, you and all your colleagues fighting with honor for the good of many.

Keep the Faith Brother, only American politicians despise you, America's people do not.
