Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Once upon a time, Santa Claus was a very popular figure around this time of year. Edmund Gwenn even won an Oscar for portraying him in a movie. But along the way, it was Scrooge who kept gaining in favor. His role has been played by a galaxy of stars, including Reginald Owen, Albert Finney, Kelsey Grammer, Tim Curry, Walter Matthau, Fredric March, John Carradine, Ralph Richardson, Cyril Ritchard, George C. Scott, Alastair Sim, Jack Palance and Basil Rathbone. I guess the allure of the role is that Ebenezer Scrooge goes to bed a mean and nasty creature, and by morning has undergone a dramatic epiphany and found spiritual redemption.

But time has taken its toll on his story, which first saw the light of day in 1843. These days, Scrooge strikes us as nothing more than a slightly eccentric old codger. His constant refrain of “Bah! Humbug!” suggests he’s just a little bit cranky, sort of like the loveable old grouch who lives down the block and grouses every year about fire crackers on the 4th of July and trick-or-treaters on Halloween.

I’m sorry to say that Scrooge’s day has come and gone. Which means we’ll probably never get to see Brad Pitt, George Clooney or Leonardo DiCaprio in the role.

But, really, how can Scrooge hope to compete with the ACLU and like-minded idiots who have a hissy fit at the mere sight of a Christmas wreath, who insist that the holiday doesn’t really celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, but is merely a recognition of the winter solstice? I’m not even a Christian, but wishing someone a merry winter solstice not only sounds lame, but to my ears sounds pretty darn sarcastic.

I’m not sure just when a handful of self-righteous biddies decided to make an annual tradition of attacking Christian symbols and traditions, but this year the flash point has been the state of Washington. That’s where Governor Chris Gregoire has permitted a group of atheists to post a sign that reads in part “religion is a myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds” in the capitol rotunda next to a Christmas tree and a Nativity scene. The governor claims she couldn’t object because of the First Amendment, but that merely confirms she wins the prize as 2008’s biggest Christmas fruitcake. It is, after all, the atheists whose belief system constitutes an extremely rigid religion of its own, and one that surely hardens hearts. Speaking as a Jew, I doubt that if there was a Chanukah menorah in the capitol rotunda, the goofy governor would have given the American Nazi party a thumbs-up if they had wanted to display an autographed copy of “Mein Kampf.”

But even Ms. Gregoire isn’t this year’s meanest grinch. That title belongs to Bernard Madoff, the man who managed to fine tune the Ponzi scheme to such an extent that he was able to steal 50 billion dollars from banks, charities and individuals.

Theoretically, such financial shenanigans are not supposed to be possible in this day and age. After all, there are all sorts of federal safeguards regulating the stock market. I mean, these are some of the same eagle-eyed bureaucrats who have seen to it that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac toed the line for all these years, thus serving as shining examples of financial integrity to the entire world.

None of this is intended to take the onus off Mr. Madoff, a man who should be roasted over an open fire and served up with an apple in his mouth.

Years ago, when my son was still at an impressionable age, I told him that even though movies often depicted thieves as charming, witty and glamorous, in real life they were scum. But I also told him that at least bank robbers risked being shot down in the process of trying to take things that didn’t belong to them, whereas there was no lower or more cowardly form of animal life than a con man. I pointed out that he was the most contemptible of thieves because he stole by pretending to be someone’s friend, simultaneously taking their money and betraying their trust.

I admit I know next to nothing about making, let alone investing money. For me to even be in the running for the Nobel Prize in Economics, roughly seven billion people would have to die. So how is it that even I know that when a financial investment sounds too good to be true, Prelutsky’s one and only rule is to grab your wallet and run, don’t walk, to the nearest exit?

Good job Burt, the Mirriam-Webster people will be calling in the morning to discuss "rights and royalties" with you.

Right on Burt!
And so.. the Liberals elect as their president perhaps the biggest con man of all time! Ovomit!

That pesky first amendment
Yes, how much better life would be without that Scrooge-like first amendment permitting people to voice their contrary views...

Scrooge
The first Scrooge I ever saw was Giba-Giba, the puppet on "The Sandy Becker Show." How could you not mention Mr. Magoo?
If religion hardens hearts, how come so many of the Righteous Gentiles, the people who risked their lives and their family's lives to save Jews from the Nazis, were devout Christians? How come the United States, the most religious of the Western industrialized nations, is also the most generous?

Dear Mr. Brian Westley
People can voice whatever views they like, just not necessarily six feet high in the Capitol rotunda.

Madoff
You're right about con men being scum, particularly, in my opinion, con men who prey on the elderly. That's my objection to the film THE PRODUCERS. Why, when con men cause so much devestation, do so many movies treat them as lovable scamps? You realize how much harm Madoff has done? How many people are going to be hiding their money in mattresses, rather than investing it, if big, prestigious banks and investment firms can be taken in by something as old-as-the-hills as a Ponzi scheme?

Happy Chanukah, Burt
The secularist's are not attacking Christmas they are celebrating Festivus, which as we all know, begins with the airing of grievances.

The Modern Scrooge Story
How about a modern 'Scrooge' story where the protagonist is a young, happy, handsome, eloquent black man who promises everyone free Christmas dinner and unlimited presents. Let's call him Ebeneezer Hussein Scrooge-job.

He goes to bed on Christmas eve and is visited by three apperations.

The first, the ghost of Christmas past, shows him the cold truths of a war on an evil entity bent on the destruction of the US.

The second, the ghost of Christmas present, shows him the realities of a dimwitcratic party wrought with scandals, corruption, and self-serving politicians.

The third, the ghost of Christmas future, shows him life in the US under socialism, unchecked open borders, and policies based on global warming. It looks like your typical third world dictatorship, much like his native home of Kenya.

Ebeneezer, having been presented with reality of his ways, wakes up a grumpy, bitter, old man who decides that the best solution is to continue the full court press on the war on terrorism, listen to the conservative voices, let true capitalism be the impetus for getting us out of this financial crisis, sealing our borders, prosecuting criminals (including those within his own party) and telling global warming delusionalists to STFU.

Do you think that could happen on Jan 21, 2009?....NAAAAAAAHHHHHH

Corndog
Great update for Dickens' classic. Sadly, i think its a Naahhhh, too. There are a couple reasons for cockeyed hope. Obama is a quick learner, and the job makes the man. He has shown a remarkable ability to remain unfathomable, based on his cabinet. The guy's ability to keep his supporters happily justifying every move is uncanny.

5 Stars Burt!
I wonder if these kooks will be embracing atheism when the S.H.T.F. beginning Jan. 20?

I submit when our economy and way of life goes right down the drain then many folks will once again seek solice in our creator regardless which flavor they subscribe to.

"there are no atheists in foxholes"

Keep up the good fight Burt.

Burt, pretty good, but Madoff is speck
compared to Social Security!! We should be so lucky that SS would only cost us $50Bil. It will be more like $50Tril.

"None of this is intended to take the onus off Mr. Madoff, a man who should be roasted over an open fire and served up with an apple in his mouth."

Goshawk, I agree, but what would you expect from a party of con-men. Too bad that the Republicans have more than their fair share of con-men too, mostly RINOs.

Christianity Celebrates The Individual
Increasing the freedom of the individual has been the thrust of Western Civilization and as such is antithetical to the collectivist mindset of the left. Liberals wish to see people only as members of some group and to dole out goodies according to the standing of the group.

While the history of Western Civ. is filled with a cast of bad actors and horrible deeds, as are all civilizations, the move towards more personal freedom and individual responsibility has produced great prosperity and equality, more so than any other civilization. Christianity has been at the core of this movement and deserves to be celebrated for the good that has been achieved.

Only an unrepentant Scrooge would insist on concentrating on the human failings that have marred our journey to this point. To see the teachings of Christ as a cause of those failings is to see only the worst in what has been a remarkable story of human achievement. The left must deny those achievements and the underlying philosophy in order to create a collectivist society. Destroying individuality is at the core of collectivism.

Trulib
You are a little off topic, but great observation nontheless. Your connection of individual responsibility and Christianity vs collectivism and atheism has a lot going for it. Though hardly invariable, the idea has a lot going for it. Another factor is that Christians and conservatives see values external to themselves, proven by history, like honesty and responsibility. Atheists and collectivists insist that their own internally chosen values are just as useful. If these values have been demonstrated to fail, its irrelevant, because other people and history are irrelevant.

Rich not wealthy
Good point. Mark Levin on his radio program last week, suggested that the largest ponzi scheme ever is our social security system. We pay and pay and pay into this fund and they keep pulling money out and using it to pay for purposes other than its original intentions. That fund is now in debt to the tune of 55 TRILLION dollars. And yet, where is the all the anger for this government rip-off?

The Scrooge of Dickens'...
... original story deserves a reconsideration. Increasingly, he seems like a thoughtful, wise character besmirched by Dicken's original propaganda treatment, and all the subsequent movie versions (let's face it - he seems far less interesting and more pathetic after his awakening). Will someone please write a defense of Scrooge?

Apples & Oranges
The ACLU and other such Grinches seem to me to be missing what I think is an important point; the difference between government and culture.

Contrary to the assertions of so many, display of Christmas decorations in the public square is not necessarily governmental advocacy of a particular faith. It is, rather, an governmental acknowledgement of a cultural phenomenon. It is PUBLIC space. To prevent a group of citizens from using such space to celebrate their religious culture would be offensive to the 1st Amendment. Nor is there any Constitutional requirement to present rebuttals of those celebrations, as did that idiot in Washington. Those who wish to celebrate other religious cultures, such as atheism, may do so in a way that does not impinge on Christians' celebration of their culture.

Unfortunately, we have far too many groups and individuals who refuse to accept that others have equal rights to public space. I include among those a lot of my fellow "christians", who get their knickers all in a twist when faced with any other belief system.

Lawyers
"...at least bank robbers risked being shot down in the process of trying to take things that didn’t belong to them, whereas there was no lower or more cowardly form of animal life than a con man. I pointed out that he was the most contemptible of thieves because he stole by pretending to be someone’s friend, simultaneously taking their money and betraying their trust."

Sounds like a description of a lawyer. My favorite line in "The Godfather" is the one by Don Corleone: "One lawyer with his black briefcase can steal more money than ten men with guns."

Burt Is A National Treasure
I am so glad to see Burt Prelutsky on Townhall.com - he is a national treasure... refreshingly honest, straightforward and down to earth. His success as a writer is a testament to his talent, but more importantly, IMO, he has the unique ability to cut through the faux glorious and selfish agendas of the Hollywood pinheads, the ultra left, and organizations such as the ACLU. He not only strikes right at the heart of the matter, he lays everything out in terms that anyone can or should be able to understand, which is most gratifying.

And Your Point?
"Burt, pretty good, but Madoff is speck
compared to Social Security!!

Too bad that the Republicans have more than their fair share of con-men too, mostly RINOs."

Are you saying that you are personally unaware of the social security deduction taken from your paycheck? Your Social Security/Madofff analogy is ridiculous. Are you saying that the despicable acts of con men are party-aligned and politically, not selfishly motivated? I will never understand the convoluted thinking [sic] process of liberals!

Will Rogers said it Best
"I would much rather be the guy who purchased the Brooklyn Bridge than the on who sold it to him."

Good article Burt.

Scrooge gets a bad rap
Madoff was no Scrooge. He was a crook. Scrooge would never invested with him. Scrooge would not have been duped by *buying into an exclusive club* or accepted non-explanations for how the Madoff investment scheme worked.

Scrooge was debt free,
owed no mortgage,
never took government money for private practice,
didn't spend frivolously,
didn't boost his ego by shopping,
saved the world from MGW by refusing to add more coal to the fire,
recycled relentlessly because he never used anything up or threw anything out,
was still a devoted friend to his partner Marley and vice versa even though M. had been dead seven years,

AND with a little spititual enlightenment,

Scrooge saw his way to generosity, the embrace of wider family, and charity for all, especially Tiny Tim, who famously said,

God bless us, everyone.

Now what on earth do you think a lock box should be? Do you want to place a billion $100 bills in Fort Knox? What would you do with the excess collection of Soc Sec taxes in the years up to now?

The excess Soc. Sec payments were “loaned” to the government, not “given” to the Government. All that money sits in US Govt. Bonds, and will have to be paid for, including interest, when they expire, just like all other US Bonds.

Go to http://socialsecurity.gov/qa.htm and read
“Frequently Asked Questions About Social Security's Future”

First thing, raise the cap on the amount of income that you would pay Soc. Sec. taxes on. Bill Gates pays Soc Sec from 12:01 AM Jan 1, until 12:15, Jan 1. Since the amount one collect depends of what was payed. I would violate one of the orginal principals of the system, and limit the amount a person could collect at retirement.

millions of Jews are wonderful people

When someone identified as a Jew does a wonderful thing, he is praised to the sky, and we hear all the good things that are done by Jews, just because that’s the way Jews are.

But when Madoff steals billions of dollars, much, or most of it from other Jews, not a word about, that’s the way Jews are, even though that’s what they have been accused of, back to, and beyond “The Merchant of Venice.”

Now my question is, and has been for decades, why do we have to be told he is a Jew? What does that have to do with anything?

I just now read an article in the Herald Tribune, and the word Jew appeared 32 times.

A day old AP story uses that word 23 times.

My question is, does Madoff and his actions, have any connection with all the stories told over the centuries, which describes Jews a money grubbers, people who will steal money from anyone.

Of course millions of Jews are wonderful people, but for some reason when you mention anything even slightly negative about a Jew, you are called anti-semitic.

But what do Jews call a Jew who steals billions of dollars from Jews. I bet that if Madoff was not a Jew but did steal all that money by targeting, and acting friendly to Jews, he would not be treated so kindly. You did notice is is not in jail right now.

Not much danger for that one.

About 40 years ago I was on the phone talking to the Manager of my Bank of America branch. He queitly told me that, We are being robbed. I said go for it, but he said I am doing exactly what I am supposed to do, keep talking on the phone, and look like I am paying little attention to him.

He said, someone already hit the alarm switch, but every employee here is supposed to continue what they are doing, including quietly handing the robber the money. Now he is heading for the door, I can see the police cars already in front of the bank, and now they have him.

Not much danger for that one.

Have you ever heard of a Programmer that could solve a problem without making a mess of things?

They would rather do it their way, forget the user. That's been going on since th invention of computers.

Maybe it partly my fault, as I trained some of the first 1,000 who ever used a computer.

The Writer Responds to Jim
I don't know where you've been, but his fellow Jews have made no secret of the fact that Bernard Madoff is Jewish. That's one of the reasons he has been universally cursed by Jews. After all, it was mainly from robbing Jewish individuals, hospitals and charities that he got most of his ill-gotten gains.

I happen to know that it is not only gentiles who are accused of anti-Semitism. In my own experience, when I have written pieces in which I pointed out that anyone who claims to see a moral equivalance between Israel, an ally of America, a democracy that guarantees rights for women and freedom of speech and religion, and Israel's enemies, I can expect to receive a number of e-mails from anti-Semites attacking me as a shill for Israel. However, when I take American Jews to task for voting 80-90% of the time for liberals, I know that some of my co-religionists will be calling me a self-hating Jew.

But, Jim, to suggest that just because Madoff is Jewish proves that the anti-Semites down through the ages were right in condemning Jews as money-grubbers displays the same kind of thought process that blames women when they're raped. And, no, Jim, Jews have never used the blood of Christian children in the making of matzos.

Regards, Burt Pretsky

Soc. Sec. was once lockboxed
SS was set aside as a separate fund to itself, not exactly the insurance it was billed because it was still Ponzi'ed--money in paid for money out, but in 1968 Pres. Johnson and his Dem. Congress voted and signed the elimination of the lockbox and the intermingling of SS deductions (taxes) with general revenues. We now have a $39 trillion SS unfunded obligation. The SS fund gets IOU's from our gov't to itself. As the US entire GNP for 2007 was $13 trillion, I don't see us making up that shortfall in SS in my lifetime.

Up until 1986, SS was generally not taxed, and then a Dem. Congress and Rep. Reagan voted and signed into law the treatment of SS as taxable income--altho' if SS is someone's only source of supprot today, it is not taxed by the feds.

The idiot system likely run by my former students last month sent my SS check (I do not have direct deposit) to some account at JP Morgan Chase (with whom I do not have an account), and now I have to wait for Treasury to locate and recover my Nov. check before I can receive it. Luckily, I am not a widow with six starving children. But it would have been a great help in paying my Nov. municipal taxes.

I guess I should be glad we don't have universal health care and it wasn't my heart transplant that they sent to JP Morgan Chase or anywhere else the bureaucrats' hearts' desire.

Also, Burt you didn't mention
the American version of Scrooge (fictional), Ben(edict) Slade, played by Henry "Fonz" Winkler around 1979.

Missed Scrooges
Burt, you missed Michael Caine who turned in a wonderful adaptation of the character in "Muppet's Christmas Carol". The basic story line is as close to the original story as I've seen, but the addition of some cute and nice songs have turned the elitist's heart to stone.

The Jim Responds to Writer 1 of 2

Burt: I don't know where you've been, but his fellow Jews have made no secret of the fact that Bernard Madoff is Jewish.

Me: That was no secret, I mention that “I just now read an article in the Herald Tribune, and the word Jew appeared 32 times. A day old AP story uses that word 23 times.”

Burt: That's one of the reasons he has been universally cursed by Jews. After all, it was mainly from robbing Jewish individuals, hospitals and charities that he got most of his ill-gotten gains.

Me: And that curse is as it should be.

Burt: I happen to know that it is not only gentiles who are are accused of anti-Semitism. … … anti-Semites attacking me as a shill for Israel. … … my co-religionists will be calling me a self-hating Jew.

Me: I have seen that in your articles on TH, and many other places.

Burt: But, Jim, to suggest that just because Madoff is Jewish proves that the anti-Semites down through the ages were right in condemning Jews as money-grubbers displays the same kind of thought process that blames women when they're raped.

Me: No that is exactly what I was not saying. My point is that down through the ages complaints against Jews were both untrue and deserved, and usually that is just someone’s hate for a Jew, because of what he heard that some other Jew did.

The Jim Responds to Writer 2 of 2

My main point is - Why did Madoff, his investors, and the organizations he stole from, even need to be identified as Jews? I think that identification is made today, because of imagined and actual happenings in the past.

Why do we care, why must we know, that he and the misfortunate in this case are Jews. I don’t care to know that, and I wish I didn’t. Don’t you agree that comments and information about Madoff will just solidify the negative stories we have been told down the years?

I would think no better and no worse if the perpetrator of this scheme had been an Indian, an Iraqi, a Saudi Arabian, a South American, a donkey or a Hollywood Liberal

Remember, the word Jew, Black, Homo, Female, Male, and each and every one of the descriptors, are the identifiers. What you do or think next, depends on what you have experienced and heard about, other people with that same identifier. No negative identifier, no problem.

Burt: And, no, Jim, Jews have never used the blood of Christian children in the making of matzos.

Me: I have no idea what that means.

Burt: Regards, Burt Pretsky

Atheists? or Cowards?
Atheists seem overly willing to attack the Christian or Hebrew faith because these are religions of peace and they can do so without fear for their personal safety but every Atheist seems to cower in mortal fear of Islam.
Is it really cowardice or do Atheists see Islam as their friend and Ally because they too wish to destroy American culture?

TownHall is so much the better as a conservative site because of Prelutsky's witty attacks on the lame and the left (ok, somewhat redudndant); he's a great antidote to the somber pieces. I particularly liked the image of Madoff open-spit roasting with an apple in his mouth. By the way, none of us should give up on the Nobel in Econ--if Krugman can win win it for the drivel he delivers then we all have a shot.

Many families go outside and turn their faces upward to watch fireworks.
It is extremely rare for one of them to be injured. It's been a long time and such an incident is long overdue.
It is very hard to find the person who fired a particular bullet into the sky.
Spent bullets tumble and loose velocity. They are more likely to maim than kill.
How would you know for sure that it was not your tumbling bullet that blinded a small child or crippled the child's grandmother?
Do you care? Would you like to spend the rest of your life wondering if that was one of your bullets?

The horn on your vehicle will wake just as many sleeping neighbors.
It will sustain noise much longer and your neighbors are less likely to call the police.
You don't need to go out into the cold, you can use your remote from inside where it is warm.

Yes, the 1st Amendment gives us the right to present contrary opinions and it should continue as such.

However, that sign constituted fighting words, put a few feet from the Nativity scene. The Nativity scene is a passsive display of hope that you can draw whatever message from you want. Ditto the menorah. The atheist sign's first sentence made a statement of faith - I'm okay with that. You want to believe there's no God, etc., you'll find out in the end you're wrong and regret that belief, but that's your choice. The second sentence, however, basically accused all people of faith of lack of compassion and either lunacy or idiocy.

One symbol is a gentle message of hope, the other is a verbal slap to anyone who believes that message of hope. They are not equivalent and fighting words never deserve 1st Amendment protection. The sign was inappropriate and should have only been placed with the second sentence removed.

christrmas vs the hatist kooks
ouit of curiosity how many of those who oppose and hate christmas also boycott any office parties that celebrate the christmas season.

Do these modern day haters also stop putting up trees with lights and ornaments and do they avoid exchanging presents.

My guess is a vast number of them want the public attention but still celebrate.

But this is more the tail wagging the dog. Seems like the leftists/libs/kooks love to p!ss and moan how someone is infringing on their rights to be haters but catering to minorities seems very anti=democratic where the majority not only celebrate the holiday but also support having all the symbols on public display.

Too bad the courts side with the haters and the kooks

the real cactushead
The real question is how many turn down there Christmas bonus and refuse the day off with pay!

collectivists like glory not shame
If someone identifies himself primarily as a member of a group/tribe and swells with pride at accomplishments of other members in the group, using these to promote the group in the larger society, then in all fairness, that person also has to "own" shameful acts by less illustrious members.

Therefore Jews who broadcast flattering statistics about their group like number of Nobel prize winners now have to take their lumps over Madoff.

It is unfortunate and unfair to those individuals who do NOT play upon their tribal membership to receive benefits like reflected prestige or trust, that they get lumped in with the collectivists when someone in the collective does something bad.

The Jewish community gives rise to both collectivists and rebellious individualists like Mr. Prelutsky but the former seem to be overwhelming the latter as judged by more than 80% of American Jews voting for and financially supporting the Democrats and their increasingly socialist policies.

The ACLU was originated by communists and is still disproportionately manned by Jewish liberal lawyers today. That specialized Jewish collective is out to weaken Christian presence in the public sphere. It is not antisemitic to note the source and origin of these attacks nor even to resent them. It is mere self-defense against a group of Jews with the poor judgment to ignore the Muslim threat to themselves and other non-Muslims and instead expend their energies on paranoid fantasies about Christians.

Pesky First Amendment?
Ah yes.

That would be the same First Amendment that guarantees all of us, including Christians, I presume, freedom to practice our religion without atheists and others taking it away from us, and without government interference, correct?

Just wish more people would study a bit and wake up to the fact that there is NO SUCH THING AS A "SEPARATION CLAUSE"! The First Amendment was meant to keep government out of religion (so they would not establish a state church), NOT to keep religion out of government (and every other part of our lives).

You are so right.
A case of liberals repeatedly misusing the meaning of separation of church and state until people believe it. So many don't get it.

note
"I’m not even a Christian, but wishing someone a merry winter solstice not only sounds lame, but to my ears sounds pretty darn sarcastic."

Perhaps that's due to your religious biases, but it certainly would not be to a Wiccan. So, a happy belated Yule to you.

Also, there is a menorah, but it's on the Ellipse.

Madoff was Jewish but so were many of his victims. How does that say anything bad about Jewish people?
Con men often go to those within their own group, because they can gain (unmerited) trust that way. This is also true in Evangelical and Catholic circles, etc.
I feel sorry for Madoff's victims and pray that this will be an opportunity for people in many groups to gain new perspective on their priorities.

How much is our national debt again?

Our government is he biggest Scrooge...unfortunately, they are not misers as old Ebeneezer was. If they had been we'd still have a ton of money at Ft. Knox for Social Security instead of a lock box filled with moths and a big IOU. And I sincerely doubt they will ever see the error of their ways and return the money they have stolen from the working public.

As an aside: Favorite Version of A Christmas Carol: Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol. It just isn't Christmas without it!

Seperation bah humbug
Victoria,
You're right of course.
Thomas Jefferson wrote about "separation of Church and State" in a letter he composed to the Committee of the Danbury Baptist Assoc. on Jan. 1, 1802.
No where is it included in the Declaration Of Independence or the Constitution.

Actually in the VA. act for establishing Religious Freedom of 1779
He also wrote:

Be it therefore enacted by the General Assembly, That no man shall be compelled to frequent or support any religious worship, place or ministry whatsoever, nor shall be enforced, restrained, molested or burdened in his body of goods, nor shall otherwise suffer on account of his religious opinions or belief.

In this, we also can conclude that while no NATIONAL religion is established it is also correct to to conclude that no person should suffer for having religious beliefs.

Atheists, pagans, and, non-believers are trying to destroy this country by attacking the very foundations of our Constitution and the principals that this country was founded.

ALL the founding fathers intent was that while no specific religion was to be established, all religions were to be respected and that it's worshippers were free to practice their own way.(except human sacrifice which is murder)

Example: George Washington issued an order that no effigy of the pope was to be burned on popes day in his camp so the Catholics weren't offended. yet, it was allowed in a private area, well away from camp.

"For me to even be in the running for the Nobel Prize in Economics, roughly seven billion people would have to die."

Priceless! Best line of 2008.

Oh Washington
Lovers of T-ball were at work four years ago, letting Her Highness Christine G. keep swinging until on the third try the magic majority was found to elect her governess. In keeping with the Dickens of a theme, perhaps an apparition will visit her and she will relinquish her post. But, I think that her allowing the athiests a chance at rebuttal may have closed the door to such a redemptive visitation. Alas, the T-ball game has devolved into a Franken-stinesque dream. Tell Tiny Tim that there won't be any Christmas next year, nor an untainted election for a long long time.

Birds of a feather
I've seen Chri.stian Ponzi schemes - (ones that were prosecuted, as they should have been.) The press took note of the faith-claims of the perpetrators, as well as the faith of the victims.

But as for Madoff, he proves a point that's visible in the African American community: blacks are more likely to be victims of people of their own race and/or culture.

In other words,
Birds of a feather lose their feathers together.

My investment advice, Mr. Prelutsky: don't invest in a culture, race or assumption based upon what you think is common ground. First rule in business: invest in your own business.

Con Men
They're trivialized because there is a romantic, Marxist notion that their victims are always betrayed by their own greed. So why feel sorry for Madoff's victims, right? I am not saying that; I am saying what a lot of Hollywood writers and printed literature writers are saying. Thank you.

PONZI-CREW
How could one man without the knowledge of employees, auditors, IRS get away with this? The money is hiding somewhere. Weren't there charities where he was the sole supporter? I'm guessing quite a group should be going to prison.
