Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Now that a certain amount of time has elapsed, I am prepared to look back on the Academy Awards calmly and rationally. At the time they took place, I was simply too giddy. You see, once again my wife and I had made our annual 25-cent wager covering the 24 categories and, thanks to my having guessed that the perfectly awful “No Country for Old Men” would be chosen Best Picture and the geeky Coen brothers would cop the Oscar for Best Direction, I managed to eke out a last-second victory.

For openers, I thought Jon Stewart did a good job of hosting the show, although I still think it’s a dumb idea to insist that a comedian be at the mike. That’s especially true of a comedian who, aside from possibly watching them, has nothing to do with the movies. I understand that the sponsors and the network hope to attract younger viewers, but the kids are far more interested in watching the Emmys, the Grammys and the People’s Choice awards. Most normal teenagers would rather be doing homework than having to spend an entire evening watching the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Tilda Swinton and Javier Bardem, collect statuary.

I mean, unless they also have bets down with my wife, what do they care whether a bunch of foreigners they never heard of win awards for performances they have no intention of ever seeing?

The main reason that the Academy feels they require a comedian is simply because Bob Hope was the host for so many years. If it had been Bing Crosby, I guess Harry Connick or Barry Manilow would have landed the gig by now. It would actually make more sense if they broke with tradition entirely and just hired a person with some natural wit and charm, and maybe even a couple of Oscars on their own mantel. Michael Caine, Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks, all come to mind. And if it weren’t for the requisite wit, charm and Oscars, I’d volunteer to handle the job.

Many years ago, soon after George C. Scott had been nominated for “Patton,” a magazine sent me to Spain, where Scott was shooting a turkey called “The Last Run,” to interview him. He had garnered a lot of attention because he announced that if he won the Oscar, he’d refuse to accept it. He said it was unseemly for actors to compete for awards.

When we got together in a hotel bar on the Costa Brava, I broke the ice by telling him that his statement was a lot of hooey. For one thing, he’d already been nominated twice before and had never objected. I suggested that because he had lost both times, he was now simply covering his bases. If he lost again, he could always claim it was because he said he wouldn’t accept the Oscar. And if he won, as I and everybody else assumed he would, it would merely show that even after renouncing the competition, they had no recourse but to give him the trophy because he was just so wonderful.

Furthermore, he didn’t seem to have any problem accepting Tony awards or even showing up in New York to hand them out. The only difference, so far as I could see, is that whereas millions of people around the world knew who won or lost in the Oscar Derby, only about 83 gay people in Manhattan knew or cared about the Tonys.

And, finally, I pointed out that actors don’t really win Oscars, roles do. That’s why the same 10 or 20 actors aren’t competing year after year. That’s why so often a person who wins an Academy Award -- even people as talented as Yul Brynner, Simone Signoret, Ernest Borgnine, Ginger Rogers, Ray Milland, Martin Balsam, Donna Reed, Gloria Grahame, Dorothy Malone, David Niven, Frank Sinatra and Jimmy Cagney -- not only never win another Oscar, they never again even get nominated.

In parting, I assured Scott he wouldn’t have to worry about getting nominated for “The Last Run.” He wasn’t. In fact, he never was again.

You also have to take into consideration that the Academy voters place such a premium on drama that Katherine Hepburn, in spite of winning four Oscars, never won one for a comedy role. Cary Grant was nominated twice, but both times it was for a drama. Fred Astaire was nominated just once, and that wasn’t for a musical comedy, but for a turkey called “Towering Inferno.” Steve Martin, for God’s sake, has never even been nominated and never will be, unless, in his dotage, he does “King Lear.”

But to get back to this year’s ceremony, I was reminded once again that they should have retired the Best Song category years ago. There was a time when great songs were commonplace in the movies, but in the words of one of the best, that was long ago and far away. On those rare occasions when a decent song comes along, it should be acknowledged with a special award. But it’s just silly to go on pretending that there are five decent songs to choose from in any given year.

To be fair, this year’s winner, “Falling Slowly” wasn’t as terrible as a recent winner, “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp,” but, then, neither is scarlet fever. The problem is that the team of Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, had three of their terrific songs from “Enchanted” in the running, and, as a result, “So Close,” “Happy Working Song,” and “That’s How You Know,” clearly canceled each other out. It was fairly predictable that it would happen. After all, in 1935, Clark Gable, Charles Laughton and Franchot Tone, of “Mutiny on the Bounty,” were all competing for Best Actor, and, so, Victor McLaglen won for “The Informer.”

In 1954, Lee J. Cobb, Karl Malden and Rod Steiger, were all nominated for Best Supporting Actor for “On the Waterfront,” which was why Edmond O’Brien won for “The Barefoot Contessa.”

It was 65 years ago, when composer Harold Arlen had the bad fortune to have “Happiness is a Thing Called Joe,” “My Shining Hour” and “That Old Black Magic,” all competing for the Oscar, Harry Warren got to take home the gold for “You’ll Never Know.” And just last year, Henry Krieger suffered a similar fate when three of his songs for “Dream Girls” were nominated, thus allowing gay activist Melissa Etheridge to snag an Oscar for her contribution to Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth,” the very forgettable “I Need to Wake Up.”

So, while it was to be expected that Menken and Schwartz would go home empty-handed, I thought it showed a remarkable lack of class for Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, when accepting the Oscar for their rather pedestrian tune, “Falling Slowly,” not to have taken a moment at the mike to acknowledge that if Menken and Schwartz had written perhaps one less song, they, Hansard and Irglova, would very likely have ended up with two fewer Oscars.

The winners are never who they should be
It is a long standing tradition with the oscars to nominate only films and songs that those PC people who are on the committee like or would pay to see.

Have you ever noticed that in the past dozen or so years the movies that do best at the box office are the FAMILY FARE type movies that any parent can take their youngest children to see without fear?
Yet these movies never, or rarely ever at best, seem to even get nominated for any awards.

The reason is simple, Hollywood insists on foisting it's Politically Correct anti-America, anti-family, anti-religion PAP on us year after year so when that PAP BOMBS at the box office, the Hollywood know it alls, who after all are much smarter than the average movie goer, shows us how smart they are by nominating those same box office failures for Academy Awards with usually the biggest if the box office bombs getting nominated for "Best Picture."

And sadly it's also the one that wins, every time. Because the voting for the award is by the same people that nominated the stinkers to begin with.

Hmmmmmmm
I did not know there were still people who watch these self aggrandizing shows on TV.

After all, if one of the PC actors/actresses as, Marine Dad above calls them, doesn't win an Academy Awards award, they can hang around and win an Emmy.

If they don't win an Emmy, then they have a chance at a People's Choice Award.

If they don't win a People's Choice Award, then they'll win something else.

Seems there is enough "awards" to go around so that every actor that was in a movie for any given year will "go home" with something.

I would much rather watch TV Land re-runs of Andy Griffith.

I do not go to the movies anymore as I do not want to give any support to any of the current day actors such as Sean Penn, Susan Sarandon and failures such as them.

Thanks, but I'll stick to The Beverly Hillbillies, rather than waste my money on Hollywood and the likes of Alec Baldwin (is he still in the USA or did he make good on his promise to move?).

Well, Bman
That makes two of us who don't watch the shows.
but you still can't help knowing who won and who didn't as it's on the news for days before and after.

I very rarely take my family to the movies, and I always make sure that the biggest PC whackos in Hollyweird have nothing to do with the movies I do go to, or take my family to.

As for Alec Baldwin, he's a typical liberal LIAR. Of course he didn't keep his promise to move out of the country.

Marine Dad
I should not have wasted my time keying in Alec's name. For I should have been able to answer my own question above.

I will ask though, if we conservatives avoid the movies that the whackos are involved in, doesn't that eliminte about 98.99% of all the movies made now?

All the "good ones" are now dead, too old or can't get a script because they are considered one of those dastardly republicans.

SEMPER FI!!!

Haven't deliberately watched...
--
...the Academy Award programs since 1970 (when Scott won - deservedly - for *Patton*), but my wife always does.

Well, hell. She also watches dog shows.

So occasionally I get exposed to subclinical doses of that bilge while strolling past the living room on my way from my home office to the jakes.

It really is possible to avoid this festival of Tinseltown self-abuse if you're really determined to E&E.

And you don't even require a survival knife or Louisiana hot sauce to accomplish the mission.

--

Hollywood can go to Hades!
Why does anyone still care about stupid talentless narcissists giving each other awards for the idiotic crap they create?

Don't give any of them your money!

The H*LL
with the limo libs. They can take their lack of morals and patriotism and pound sand. The pablum they put out wouldn't make a pimple on the a** of a movie like Ben Hur or shows like the Twilight Zone.

BTW ALL,

THIS WEEK, the SCOTUS had BETTER rule for us in regards to the Second Amendment and the highly illegal gun ban in DC!

Swing by the BEST Blog on TH or better still, BOOKMARK IT:

http://noliberalspin.blogtownhall.com/

We're playing, GUESS THE COMMIE PIG and an in-depth essay on the Second Amendment. So clear and concise, even a dumba** libsquirt can understand it!

Don't wait. Do. It. Now.

Burt you said it all
when you described the award for best song. A gay activist gets the award for a song in the Inconvenient Lies movie of Albore. You can follow the awards every year by looking at what the current hot PC topic in LA is.

The Academy Awards have now become a meter stick of which movies I avoid. In other words, if it wins and award it is most likely to be a piece of PC cr*p not worth watching.

As for the show itself, I quit watching the show decades ago even before I quit watching network TV. The show itself had become supremely boring with endless awards for meaningless areas. The awards have become like the closing credits now, everyone and everything must get a credit and an award.

Burt
I did not catch the awards show this year do to the spider catching a fly in my kitchen window. That was much more entertaining. But, my pup did watch it! That might explain his getting sick that night!

wobbie: Doofus, don't be too sad that you did not get nominated for "Fuitloops on the Barby"! I though it was grand!

The low ratings of the Oscars tells
the whole story.

Hollywood has been taken over by the radical Left, and even moderate liberals like Steven Speilberg suck up to them just to try and win an award.

The average person just wants to be entertained, and perhaps (dare we hope?) uplifted. They don't want to shell out their hard-earned cash in order to have a load of radical Left Wing garbage thrust down their throats along with the overpriced popcorn.

Contrary to what many think, the powers that be in Hollywood know EXACTLY what you and I want to see.

You would think that if they are in the business to make some money, they would give the public what they want. But the Hollywood elites despise the average American and deliberately withhold what we want to see.

They believe that it is their duty to reeducate Americans, and since they are not able to set up gulags and reeducation camps, they feel that controlling the stories in the film industry is the next best thing.

The plummeting ratings are of no concern to them, since they have an almost religious zeal to convert the rest of us over to their side.

As I have said before, they remind me of the guy who stole a bulldozer in order to knock down his ex-wife's house. He did not care that he destroyed the machine in the process, as long as he got his pound of flesh.

In the same way, the Lefties in Hollywood don't care if the business is destroyed, as long as they can use it to deconstruct American society.

My favorite Oscar show...
...years ago when they were broadcast live,David Niven was accepting a lifetime achievement award.A male streaker ran acroos the stage behind him.The live audience gasped.Niven simply said "You have to admire a man who is not afraid to show his shortcomings in public".

He brought down the house with that,to say nothing of my living room.

I don't think I have watched an Oscar show since.

I don't remember the last time I even

watched the Oscars... or any of those "Hollywood Circus" shows.

And I get really annoyed with being deluged with Joan Rivers' red carpet fashion critique.

Heck, I'd rather watch "South Park"... well, maybe not South Park... but close!

Burt
Yes, I must agree with you completely!

On what planet does a former juvenile delinquent beat Paul Simon for best song??

And four of the five doctumentary entries were anti-American, thus preserving a lock for them.

This show is just an excuse for these limo libs to rub each other, and I don't mean a pat on the back, either.

Five stars!!

Walk out, ask for your money back
If you mistakenly go to a Hollywood movie and find it too violent or sexual (which most are) go to the manager and ask for your money back. You sign a little slip indicating what your reasons are. Don't just walk out, make a stand, get your money back (like with a bad product) and go have a nice cup of coffee. Let them know what you think!

SSGT
Good morning!

Funny you mentioned that. I decided to watch my grass grow.

Last year I re-caulked my bathroom.

;-)

and that's the way it was....
at the Oscars 2008. Glad you fared well on the bet Burt!

5 stars!

The Oscars...
...like the Nobel Peace Prize and the Olympics has turned into a joke.

When, in 1990, "Dances With Wolves" won over "Goodfellas" I knew it was going downhill fast.

But then, when "Titanic" won over "L.A. Confidential", "As Good As It Gets", "Good Will Hunting" and "The Full Monty" I realized that it had simply become a joke.

Today, these entertainment types have gotten ridiculous, clustering together to make political statements under the guise of giving each other useless awards. I've always thought entertainers are like whores. All you want is to pay some money to be entertained for awhile. I really don't care what a whore thinks any more than I want to listen to the musings of people who pretend for a living, or who makes pretty sounds for a living.

Hollywood makes great movies.
I could really just rest my case with "Juno," which is sweet and about flawed yet likeable people in a situation that everybody could find themselves in. See also Transformers, which as far as I could tell was a 90 minute ad for the Air Force and 30 minutes of Robots beating the crud out of each other.

These movies were nominated for Oscars. And so was Lord of the Rings, which cleared out the Oscars just a few years ago. Just last year, Helen Mirren took out Best Actress for an uncannily accurate portrayal of the Queen in a movie that merely showed what it was like to live in her family, with her pressures, in a modern world that she never quite got used to.

All brilliant performances. None of them liberal leaning in any way whatsoever.

You find conspiracies where there are none. The Lead Actor Oscar went to a man who portrayed a story that is the quintessential american dream. And you say the Oscars are bad?

YLG
morning!
What color was the caulk? LOLOLO

Wacky
We're not disputing the fact that occasionally Hollywood produces fine films. I, at least, am arguing that the Oscars are going to crap ("No Country For Old Men") as opposed to fine films like "Juno".

SSGT
Dude....

White, of course. Clear silicone wouldn't look so pretty.

It sure beats watching the self-grandizement that passes for entertainment these days!

YLG & SSGT
Boy, y'all lead exciting lives.

I opted to watch my toe nails grow...

YLG
I'd rather clean the pups ears than watch TV. Of course, that "??? eye for the ??? guy" almost had me hooked! Like a hook thru my eyeball that is!

BmanIII
morning dude. Hope the weather is a little better than over the weekend. Of course, the fog we had on saturday (again), was more exciting than the Oscars!

Mountain Rose
"In the same way, the Lefties in Hollywood don't care if the business is destroyed, as long as they can use it to deconstruct American society."

Outstanding assessment of the way liberals think.

SSGT
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who never watched that show...

Of course, given the choice between the Oscars and "Qu**r Eye", I would have gone with the latter.

One always knew when it would end.

;-)

Bman III
We're having light to moderate incoming with the chance of a missile shower later! haha.

Bob_C- Olympics???
I agree with all about both the Oscars and NPP. But the Olympics? What do a couple of agenda driven popularity contests have to do with one of the few remaining events in the world, sporting or otherwise, where the name on the front of the jersey really does mean more than the name on the back?

Wacky
There is no doubt that Hollywood, on a rare occasion, produces a good movie.

Yet, over 95% of all that is produced is crap.

In formal logic, the exception proves the rule.

Gunny
mornin'

So should I take that to mean wobbie & Hal are in your vacinity?

Moderate incoming of what - Spitballs? Missiles made of "used balloons" if you know what I mean...

Just read your blog (http://nolibralspin.blogtownhall.com) re: the SCOTUS ruling on the 2nd...

I hope they realize what they are getting themselves, and "WE THE PEOPLE," into.

There are a lot of cops, etc that will side with "THE PEOPLE" should they decide to rule the wrong way.

Utter chaos will ensue....

Are you locked and loaded??

And I'd hate to see YLG get Joaquina out. Not a pretty sight to imagine.

YLG
Qu**r Eye????????????

You have got to be joshin' us.....

I would rather stick pins in my eyes...

Bman III
Thanks for the kudos. Learned a lot doing the reading for that essay.

From a historical standpoint, the DC gun ban doesn't have a leg to stand on.

As far as Burt's article, here's a question. When was the last truly GREAT movie produced? One of my all-time favorites is Ben Hur and WHAT modern actor could pull that off like Heston did?

GunnyG
....here's a question. When was the last truly GREAT movie produced? One of my all-time favorites is Ben Hur and WHAT modern actor could pull that off like Heston did?

How about a Heath ledger movie? Nope, he brings it up from the rear. Besides never seen any of his movies.

A Ben Affleck movie? Nope, he's so inept he's claiming he hasn't heard Obama's preacher's rants . Kind of like Obama himself. What was that "production" called Gigli or something?

I know, I Know, Senn Penn - oops, sorry, (the sound you hear is Bman slapping self on forehead repeatedly)

"Wobbie And Hal does Will(ie)?"

I give up - who?

A question for you - The democrats have been in office since Nov '06. What are the markets doing today? What are their DIS-approval ratings? 89%

And didn't the Gov. from N.J. head up Bear Sterns before becoming the Gov. and getting banged up because he wasn't wearing his seat belts as the law dictates?

Entertainment???
Hollywood, for the most part has been engaged in propaganda for the left for years. Most entertainment shows on tv ,also.I have no desire to waste my time.

Almost every show I have tried to watch, has a liberal slant.Sometimes it is not evident ,unless you expect it (which I do). Some do not even try to hide it.That is better .At least they are honest.

The Oscars lost revelency for me years ago.The "faked surprise" of the winners.Winners who win for political reasons, not for merit.Totally irreverent.

THE OSCARS

.....A gathering of effete snobs and over/under dressed women milling around, patting each other on the back and giving each other awards ...

.....Put the show opposite American Idol and it would not be able to get sponsors .....COLOSSUS

Burt
You watched the Oscar's??? Should we send hazardous duty pay??? Just how many malignant narcissist love fests does Hollyrude need anyway?

As to Best Song category it reminds of people who eat bugs or bird spit and call it gourmet or a 'delicacy'.

Hollywood is going to continue to make their anti-American gutter moral movies because they make all the money they need shipping them over seas.

I do remember when they weren't so bad such as when Vanessa Redgrave gave her "I hate Israel" speech and got booed off the stage. I think that was around 1977 or there abouts.

GunnyG
I have been enlightened once again! Your blog today is "OUT-STANDING"! I wish I could be at the proceedings with the SCOTUS this week.

Lolo1
morning Lolo! When I think of Hollywood greats, "Land of the Lost" comes to mind!

Bman III
Yep, the Dhimmis been running the show since Jan 07 and the crap is hitting the fan. As I've stated before, they have the "fecal" touch.

LeftRudyRight
The spectacle of watching "Dream Teams" made up of professional players beating the crap out of amateurs is the height of absurdity.

Just me. Suit yourself.

BMan- Corzine
Corzine was the head of Goldman Sachs, preceding Henry Paulson, not Bear Stearns. Say what you will about his political ideology, but his performance at GS was nothing short of stellar. And the domestic markets are surprisingly flat today, for now.

I haven't watched the Oscars
since Fargo, a violent and bloody precursor to There Will Be Blood, was nominated and won. It was, again, a movie three people in a basement in Soho had seen, and no one particularly liked.

Crash followed the same pattern. It was first billed as a comedy starring Sandra Bullock, but then when audiences realized Bullock wasn't in the movie five minutes, they changed the previews to a black satire on America race relations. As long as it has black, race, satire, and America in it, the Oscars goes nuts. Crash was a dreadful movie displaying nothing but vile prejudice, mindless violence, and depressing situations.

Even ignoring the quality of the nominations, the Oscars presentation on tv is an over-bloated mis-production that instead of promoting its industry is adding more nails to theatrical films' coffin. Young people are not going to the movies. They are watching them alone on iPods and cell phones.

We could see the end to the movie palace in my lifetime. The Academy should be concerned about pleasing the public and drawing audiences, but they are busy gazing on their green navels.

What was Steve thinking of?
Steve Martin should never win an Oscar, even if he does five movies in a year and they are the only nominees. Why? Three words (The Pink Panther). What the hell was hw thinking? Next thing you know he'll do Sgt Bilko...oh wait.

However, I do like a lot of his movies. I was wondering though, does anybody else on the thread not find his old comedy funny? I still wonder how the heck he was voted funniest man in America in the 70's. Am I wrong or should i just say Excuse Me!!!

Bob-C- Olympics
While I agree that the introduction of professionals has somehwat dampened the 'integrity' of the Olympics, I still prefer watching them to most other sporting events. That being said, if the 'Dream Team' represents the best that we have to offer, so be it. I want to see our best against their best, whether its pros or amateurs. And the introduction of the Dream Team has actually helped to advance basketball as a sport around the globe. Look no further than the Olympics in 2004 where the Argentines won the gold medal against our Dream Team with a team made up of Manu Ginobli and bunch of guys you've never heard of. Honestly, I prefer to watch the lesser sports that only get coverage during the Olympics. Most of those athletes will never be able to make a living off their sport (quick, name the last Olympic marathon winner), but compete for the love of the sport and the honor of representing their country.

SSGT
Thanks.

What is amazing is that I came to those COMMON SENSE conclusions w/o the benefit of a Haaaavard Law degree.

LeftRudy
Thanks for the correction.

I will admit that I was not sure of which firm he headed up.

I will admit, however, that I would not have wasted my time to find out.

Except I do know that he is the typical liberal. Wonder why he wasn't wearing his seatbelt like a good liberal would have been doing. Especially while flying down the road at 100 mph.

And it wasn't even a valid government function he was going to.

JR
Never thought he was funny. Still don't. He's an uber-lib and they promote their own.

JR
You
are
excused!

Bman III
"Wonder why he wasn't wearing his seatbelt like a good liberal would have been doing. Especially while flying down the road at 100 mph."

"Some pigs are more equal than others."

or as Chappaquiddick Teddy says:

"Do as I say, not as I do."

Gunny
..."Some pigs are more equal than others."

Oink!!! Oink!!!
And he has the scars to prove it...

Still no incoming balloons???

Bman III
No doubt the resident libstooges will show up soon. It's only 1135 EST and most liberals don't roll out of the rack until noon.

Better relearn the traits of the lib moonbats amigo, hunting season opens on Independence Day!

Gunny
I figure they are all gathered around the pool table down at the local pool hall. Helen Thomas is spread eagle about now...

Burt
Your usual frivolous topic and treatment. MSM in their lust, sloth, pride and avarice believe they are influential in American life. Fear is the tactic used by the rebellious to shock, outrage, startle, and depress the law-abiding, moral public. Those who watch the Jerry Springer shows, read the gutter tabloids, laugh at adolescent humor enjoy the pain others. Why we continue to pay to see these immoral, deceitful, irrational purveyors of filth is beyond me. The talk shows are one big movie commercial. Why not, they are owned by the film industry. That's Entertainment! The American public is patient, but they are wising up.

Shalom

Entertainment
All of you who, justifiably, hate the Hollywood tripe....please send your dollars to your local community theatre. There are some good ones out there! We always work on a shoe-string, and the actors perform because they love it, not because they're up for an Oscar or Tony.

Nothing compares to Live Theatre. That's why I do it! Don't condemn all actors for the big-budget narcisists in Hollywood.

Some of us think the value of telling a good story and touching the audience with laughter and tears is worth all the hard work.

Check out a local theatre near you. Support the Arts where it counts. Not every actor (or director:me) is worthy of condemnation.

Gunny G, BMan et al.
Good morning. I hope you are having a good day.

Actually, I think the worst BEst Picture winner was "Unforgiven." My Dad and I walked out after the movie saying it was a massive waste of our time and money. We kept expecting it to get better, and all it got was worse.

Mountain Rose - Making money
--
Mountain Rose had a good point above:

"You would think that if they are in the business to make some money, they would give the public what they want."

The objective of any industry is to get return on investment, but today the various entertainment companies "package the product" in so many different ways, taking profits (if they can get 'em) in many forms at various levels.

It's not only how a movie performs in the U.S. market (for example), but how it does in various countries overseas. Then there are "downstream" potentials for on-demand access, DVD sales (now flattening out), cable "package" programming, and eventually broadcast commercial TV.

Not to mention "spin-off" stuff, chiefly in the kiddie market, for clothes, toys, games, what-have-you.

What Mountain Rose (and most of us) consider to be "the public" - the theatrical release movie audiences who actually buy overpriced popcorn to sit in big darkened rooms where our feet stick to the floor - is not the only market the producers are trying to satisfy, and we may not even be the *primary* market their Pointy-Haired Boss management boobs are focused upon.

Somehow, even disasters like *No Country For Old Men* (to which I was dragged, retching and writhing, by my brother-in-law [who is otherwise a pretty nice guy]) have some kind of profit-making purpose toward which they're aimed.

God knows, they didn't spend anything on a background score or an orchestra to record it, so there's one expense completely eliminated right there.

Good morning to you....

I can't remember the last movie we went to see in a theater.

And it will be a long long time before I go back...

GunnyG-YLG-Ssgt-Bman-Lolo-Others
It is called Show BUSINESS, not Show ART! Yet the more money a Film makes. The LESS CHANCE it has of winning. Liberal Logic=Winning is Losing, Losing is Winning.

BTW, found this on Foxnews.com for Wobbie The Coward:

Manufacturer Pipedream Products has sold more than 100,000 celebrity blow-up dolls (including models of Paris Hilton, Pamela Anderson and Christina Aguilera) and just last week "inflated" the lineup by adding Eva Longoria, Lindsay Lohan, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Simpson and Jessica Alba.
While "Herbie: Fully Loaded"-starlet Lohan is designed to "Rev Up Your Sex Drive," "Daisy Duke"-dame Simpson supposedly makes you feel like "Crazy Daisy" and "Desperate Housewife" Longoria "Loves to Play."
The company also plans to add Britney Spears to the bevy of beautiful blow-ups.

The last two movies I went to a theater to see were "National Treasure: Book of Secrets" and "Alvin." Neither got any awards , but both a sh!tload of money. Both were either PG or mild PG-13. I guess people want to see movies hey can take the kids to.

knuckle draggers beware
Your best picture complaints might come back to haunt you.

With all the babble about how horrid Hollywood is, you folks seem to be supporting Hollywood to an extent I can't afford. Your collective knowledge on the merits of individual films is truly awesome. On a fixed income, I can't afford the luxury of a "theater experience".

If these movies are so bad, why don't you biblicals / wannabe conservatives do something better? Why don't you make the great american film? OOps, although not mentioned, they've tried before, in commie atheist tinsel town:

The Robe, The Greatest Story Ever Told, the referenced Ben Hur (twice), Quo Vadis, The Ten Commandments, Samson and Delilah, Demetrius and the Gladiators, et al. You folks seem really fixated on the crud produced by Hollywood.

There is a reason Hollywood makes what it makes: money. In good capitalist fashion, the objectionable crud they produce makes money. Frequently they make very good stuff and occasionally Great stuff.

Would you, as faithful acolytes of Ayn Rand, compel Hollywood to make money losing pictures? What an interesting conundrum for biblicals and conservatives.

"You would think that if they are in the business to make some money, they would give the public what they want."

Same question could be asked of the NY Slimes and other liberal rags. When the masses get laid off from these pubs, its' the little guy that suffers, who by the way, libs supposedly care about. However, Pinchy, Maureen (I can't find a man and I'm the only one who doesn't understand why) Dowd, krugman and the rest of the elites still collect their checks. Unfortunately, ideology trumps truth and we all suffer for it with a corrupt media.

Actually, it's the other way around. I've yet to meet a liberal with an ounce of guts.

A note about Ben Hur
I'm waiting for a film to come along with the sheer excellence of Ben Hur. It is my all-time favorite film for many reasons.

It has been a while since I have seen a film that takes a great story and tells it with brilliance in every measure of film-making like Ben Hur achieves.

It is brilliantly:
directed
acted
filmed
edited
and the musical score is one of the most beautiful ever written.

For sheer entertainment, who could fault this film? I first saw it when I was a child and I vividly remember scenes from this film...no other film ever made such an impact on me before or since. I usually watch it at least once a year. It is about time to bring it out again. It never gets old. It is so rich that every time I see it I notice another nuance of story-telling that is profoundly well-crafted.

Those of you who look at it askance because it it a moral story, and (good heavens!) deals tangentally with Jesus and Miracles, are missing a wonderful film.

Bleeding heart liberal
as usual, you don't even have facts right.

Prince Harry was not "outed" by Drudge but the report on his fighting with British troops in Afghanistan came from Australia.

And why is that relevant to the movies?

The three best movies almost no one has seen are
The Milagro Beanfield War directed by Robert Redford but not his usual liberal drivel

Moon Over Parador with Richard Dreyfuss
and Let It Ride with Richard Dreyfuss.

Was it the outfit?
Aside from not thinking Steve martin is funny, I also never thought Linda carter was attractive. I think it was the outfit. heather graham wore it in an episode of scrubs and i didn't think it did anything for her, and overall I think she is quite stunning. Why am I even contemplating this? help!

Not to worry, BHL.

In mid-May, you'll get your $300 "stimulus" check from the feds and then you and your family will be able to have four nights at the movies, with $20 left over for a stop at Dairy Queen on the way home!

And I seriously doubt they can buy the theater.

It is probably owned by one of those large chains of theaters, owned by a bunch of libs.

I mean, why else would they show the crap they do.

And arguing the merits of one film over another?
You are kidding, right?

I'll take a poll:
Who thinks that arguing the merits of a film is even remotely important. Unless you:

a) Sell tickets and need to answer a question from one of the guests

b) Sell popcorn and need to answer a question from one of the guests

c) Sweep the floors and need to answer a question from one of the guests

We are going to spend Christmas in Branson so thanks for the tip I will add it to the list.

ModMark
Nope. Didn't go to see Sweeney Todd. I have seen the stage production a couple of times. One time I hated it, once I really liked it. It all depends on how it is handled.

It is just not my favorite musical. If it is handled with an eye toward dark humor I think it can be very effective. If it takes itself too seriously it is abismal.

Just my cut at it. I haven't really seen too many clips of the film version, and as a rule I like Johnny Depp as an actor, but the few clips I saw made it look like the director went for the blood and guts stuff and not for the twisted humor that elevates this from a screamer.

Have you seen it? What theme did it embrace?

I gotta say....
That I saw No Country For Old Men last week and it was damn good.

I didn't see a political message in it, I just appreciated it for what it is. A rare good movie these days.

Underwear Is Important!

If you don't laugh out loud at this one, call the morgue and reserve a tray, because you are dead!

Always wear clean underwear in public, especially when working under your
vehicle. From the Northwest Florida Daily News comes this story of a Crestview couple who drove their car to Walmart, only to have their car
break down in the parking lot.

The man told his wife to carry on with the shopping while he fixed the car in the lot. The wife returned later to see a small group of people near the car. On closer inspection, she saw a pair of male legs protruding from under the chassis. Although the man was in shorts, his
lack of underwear turned private parts into glaringly public ones.

Unable to stand the embarrassment, she dutifully stepped forward, quickly put her hand UP his shorts, and tucked everything back into place. On
regaining her feet, she looked across the hood and found herself staring at her husband who was standing idly by. The mechanic, however, had to
have three stitches in his forehead

The Writer Corrects a Corrector
ModMark--I said Cagney had won an Oscar. I had him listed with all the other winners who had received no other nominations, making my point that it's the role that gets nominated, not the actor.

Regards, Burt Prelutsky

There WERE some good movies
I never watch the ceremonies but I do pay attention to what was nominated, not just what won. If you look at that, there were some EXCELLENT movies this year. Use the list of nominees to order them from Netflix.

It seems like most of the people posting here and talking about how much they dislike the Oscar nominees this year didn't really see very many of the films. In fact I think a few did brag that they don't go to the movies or see the films but they still feel somehow qualified to trash them.

I can understand how "No Country for Old Men" and "There will be Blood" may not be everyone's cup of tea. Though I will say I saw both movies and liked them both. But, fine you didn't like them.

What about Julie Christie in "Away from Her". Anyone over the age of 30 or who has aging parents or relatives they care about and watches that movie without being affected by it must not have a pulse.

What about Phillip Seymore Hoffman in "Charlie Wilson's War". What a tremendous character actor. What an incredible range Hoffman has. He brought that picture to life.

What about George Clooney and "Michael Clayton"? No matter what you think about Clooney, that movie was a great story, well written, and all of the actors in it were pitch perfect. But that had to be the best dramatic performance Clooney has delivered and one of the best portrayals of a disintegrating, sleazy scumbag lawyer confronted with the consequences of his and his firms actions ever on film.

Just because YOU didn't like it...
... Don't assume it was not making someone a lot of money.

Some folks seem to think movie makers are losing money on these acadamy award nominated films... Comments like

"You would think that if they are in the business to make some money, they would give the public what they want."

"the Lefties in Hollywood don't care if the business is destroyed"

"We could see the end to the movie palace in my lifetime. The Academy should be concerned about pleasing the public and drawing audiences..."

As other folks have pointed out, they make plenty of money on these films and a lot of it is not from people going to theaters for the few weeks your average film is on the big screen.

There are also some fairly good film critics. Pick one or two you like and agree with and pick the films you see or rent based on what they recommend. I have no sympathy for someone who goes to No Country for Old Men or There Will Be Blood and is surprised by the content of the movie. There were plenty of reviews of these movies and LOTS of word of mouth.

There is no shortage of good films, no matter what your taste is. Get a good home theater system with decent surround sound and a 40 inch or better plasma, LCD, or rear projection monitor, a blue ray player. Then get a Netflix subscription. You can read the reviews past and present, get virtually any movie still in print and watch them until you figure out something better to do with your spare time.

The Golden Snicker Award
"Most normal teenagers would rather be doing homework than having to spend an entire evening watching the likes of Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Tilda Swinton and Javier Bardem, collect statuary."

PS, I cannot answer any orange trivial persuit questions--so most of this article went over my head. But,

"And just last year, Henry Krieger suffered a similar fate when three of his songs for “Dream Girls” were nominated, thus allowing gay activist Melissa Etheridge to snag an Oscar for her contribution to Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth,” the very forgettable “I Need to Wake Up.”"

I *did* sense something nefarious going on in this article.
