Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Every so often I hear from a self-anointed right-wing commissar that I'm not really a conservative simply because he's disagreed with something I wrote. The most annoying aspect of being called on the carpet is that it serves to remind me that some of those on the right can be every bit as dogmatic and self-righteous as the pinheads on the left.

So, I will now list my core beliefs and you can all decide for yourselves whether when I claim to be a conservative, I'm guilty of misrepresentation.

For openers, I'm in favor of capital punishment. The sixth commandment, by the way, doesn't really say that thou shalt not kill. When correctly translated, it states that thou shalt not murder. I can not imagine how anybody can argue that a person who commits cold-blooded homicide is entitled to out-live his innocent victim by 40 or 50 years.

Next, I do not understand why a so-called civilized society allows pedophiles to run loose. It always confounds me that so many on the right seem so much more concerned with the safety of embryos than they are with protecting actual children. I, for one, do not regard electronic monitors or court orders dictating how many yards from schools, parks and playgrounds, these perverts are allowed to come, as appropriate safeguards. What I regard as appropriate would be a dungeon or, better yet, a cemetery plot.

Speaking of the legal system, I do not believe that criminal defense attorneys should be encouraged or even permitted to invent any number of implausible theories as a means to confuse juries unless they swear on a Bible that they themselves actually believe that the rape or murder was committed by members of a Colombian drug cartel, an Albanian albino or a gang of Martians.

Furthermore, as a conservative, I believe in school vouchers. I can't be the only person who's sick and tired of listening to liberal politicians praising public education to the heavens while, at the same time, they've got their own children safely ensconced in private schools.

I am opposed to foreign aid. There are only a small handful of nations we can honestly regard as allies. Why on earth should we send billions of our tax dollars to the rest or underwrite the U.N., a haven for thousands of scoundrels who definitely have no business living in a glass house.

I wish I didn't ever again have to listen to people prattle on about the mortality rate in this country, implying that we'd all live much longer if only we had socialized medicine, otherwise known as universal health care. The only reason we don't all live to be 100 is either because we are cursed with inferior genes or because we eat and smoke too much. Heck, when you factor in drugs, booze and the way most of us drive, it's a wonder so many of us even survive our twenties.

As a conservative, I know what my position on abortions is supposed to be, but, frankly, in this day and age of the Pill and all the other readily available contraceptive products, I have no idea why it even remains an issue. It just seems to me that unwanted pregnancies, like AIDS and other STDs, are easily prevented, and it's high time we simply moved on.

I am for doing whatever it takes to close the borders and for utilizing nuclear energy. The former would go a long way to improving the quality of life here in America and the latter would free us of our dependence on places like Saudi Arabia and people like Hugo Chavez.

I oppose the federal government's misguided attempts at social engineering and I would do away with dual-citizenship and bilingual education. While I was at it, I would place the ACLU on the attorney general's list of terrorist organizations.

I would make English our official language, and I would out-law all those things that require you to hit button #1 for English, #2 for Spanish. Is there, I ask you, a single Spanish-speaking nation on the face of the earth that employs similar devices?

I would acknowledge that a state of war exists between Islamic fundamentalism and the civilized world, and I would do whatever is required to win it.

Before signing off, I wish to make it clear that I'm explaining my credentials as a conservative, not as a Republican. There's no reason at all to boast about belonging to a party that saw the Republicans in Washington trying to suck up to the Democrats for the first six years of Bush's administration. Just thinking about John McCain and his Gang of 14 is enough to make me gag.

The only reason I have for voting for people with (R) after their name is because those with (D) somehow manage to be even worse.

Finally, because I'm not just a conservative, but a dog-loving conservative, I'm disgusted that Michael Vick, a vile thug if ever there was one, was allowed to plea bargain his way out of the sentence he deserved. Forget prison. If it had been up to me, he would have been driven to the local vet to be fixed.

Abortion vs. dog fighting?
come on Burt, ain't it time "we simply moved on."
I don't get it.

3 More For You
God is real. Animals are for eatn. And, global warming is bs.

Good one, Burt!
Batting a thousand.

The only inconsistency, harking back, is your acceptance of Giuliani. I don't think we'll ever see eye to eye on that, my friend.

Burt wrote:

"... in this day and age of the pill and all the other readily available contraceptive products, I have no idea why it even remains an issue."

Abortion remains an issue with me because there are still people who don't have enough common sense to prevent pregnancy; so unborn babies continue to be murdered every minute.

The massacre and torture of human beings, or animals, doesn't belong in any civilized country.

I don't have a problem with dual-citizenship, but I agree with you on everything else.

Five stars.

here here!
"I can not imagine how anybody can argue that a person who commits cold-blooded homicide is entitled to out-live his innocent victim by 40 or 50 years."

exactly!

If only we could vote you directly in to President, sir.

i do agree with I41say though. we are still averaging 4-5000 abortions a day. (I'm tempted to add, though, it's mostly liberals who are aborting their spawn. less nutters for our many conservative children to deal with i s'pose)

I can't believe
that nobody here is calling Burt on the phone thing.

Scholarships, not Vouchers
I'm reading "Words That Work" by Dr. Luntz. It makes me feel smarter, like when I read Burt's columns. We should call them "Scholarships" instead of vouchers - and talk about "Equal Opportunity in Education."

I like the Spanish-language deal at the ATM, because it makes me feel like 8th grade Spanish wasn't a complete waste. Whenever I accidentally choose "Espanol", I just go with it. It's kinda fun!

That last line about taking Vick to get "fixed"...HA!!!

Dunno, Bert...
--
Many of your preferences make it clear that you trust government (as an institution) entirely too damned much.

But that's definitely "conservative," all right. Political roots about as deep as those of Great Birnam Wood (ambling along to Dunsinane).

Every year strengthens my impression that if it were 1775 again, I'd see most of today's "conservatives" cheering on the guys in the red uniform coats.

"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen."

..-- Samuel Adams

Espanol, por favor?
"#1 for English, #2 for Spanish. Is there, I ask you, a single Spanish-speaking nation on the face of the earth that employs similar devices"

Uhm...Spain?

Fact is, just about every other nation in the Western World and quite a few outside it has English as an option on atm's and such. It's called "Customer Service" and it's actually a very free market thing to employ.

I agree Burt
you are a true conservative. I agree with everything you said and have agreed with the part about voting for the lesser of the evils when the Republican candidate was not a true conservative. That was in the past. The last time I got to vote for a president who I actually liked was the second term of Reagan. I can't do that anymore Burt because I think it's detrimental to the Republican Party and the long term interests of the country. We have to stop the continued slide to the left. If the Rs move left to capture more of the idiots who can't decide which side of the fence has the least number of splinters to put in their butt, then the Ds will move even further to the left so they can't point out the "meanness" of the Rs.

What results is a country moving further and further into socialism and communism. Sure we may have to live with a Hillary for 4 years but if that is the price to pay to wake up the people and stop this drift, then that is what we will have to do.

Nicely done, Burt...
Abortion's probably the only issue where I part company with you. With Islamist nutters lurking in nearly every shadowy corner, we're gonna need all the warm bodies we can get to bear arms, liberal nutters or no. Thing about most of them libs... plunge them into a combat situation with these hounds of hell, and they ain't liberals no more. Guaranteed.

BTW, I've got a question for you:

How do you REALLY tick off a militant Islamist?

Burn a copy of the Koran? Nope.

Vandalize a mosque? Not even close.

Insult his mother? Are you kidding?

The answer is... CALL HIM A SLAVE!

Good column
There seems to be almost no middle ground on the subjects Burt brings up. One pretty much agrees with all, or disagrees with all. The whole thing highlights why the country is so polarized. There sems to be almst no overlap in positions on these issues. Where is the overlapping middle ground, voters who support vouchers, fiscal responsibility and the death penalty, who also support affirmative action, free abortion on demand, and amnesty for illegal aliens? Ones position on any one of these issues is a dead giveaway to the position on all.
The definition of liberal and conservative may be vague, but positions on these issues are clear.

Vic
With BrianR, and a few others, i believe that if we are going to have a leftist in office, better a D than an R after the name. This gives a clear label to the policies that will be shown as failures. Approval of congress is at an all time low as Dems find themselves on the inside trying to simultaneously implement and dodge the promises they made to get elected. With leftwing foolishness rampant as in the Johnson/Carter years, the door is open for another 1980, or 1994. Possibly the third time will be a charm, and the people elected will not be conservative in name only.

Burt said:
"I would make English our official language, and I would out-law all those things that require you to hit button #1 for English, #2 for Spanish. Is there, I ask you, a single Spanish-speaking nation on the face of the earth that employs similar devices?"

Every nation in Europe has ATM:s that will service you in English regardless of if it is the official language or not. It's customer service. You can find that kind of ATM's in Spain and Portugal too.

Now are you suggesting that a BIG governemnt dictates to naks and other service providers that they can only use English in their services? How "conservative" is that.

About death penalty. I have two words for you: Randall Adams.

Van
You have a good point about #1 for English. Its the market, and there is no good reason for govt to interfere. I admit i am not charmed with the thought that the American culture is being diluted, especially by illegal aliens, but taking action against pushing #1 for English is hardly where the govt needs to take action.

As for the death penalty. Presumably, you are against it because without doubt, innocent people have been executed. Compared to what? About half of all homocides are committed by people who have already been convicted of murder and released. The average sentence served for murder in this country is about 7 years. Releasing convicted murderers results in hundreds, perhaps thousands of innocent deaths every year. Randall what's his name seems a small price, tragic as it is, to pay for saving these innocents.

Sgt Relic
McCain/Feingold trashes the first amendment and a googol of infringes trashes the 2nd. Your use of the word absolute is timely. Those folks afraid of firearms come up with all kinds of non-reasons for infringements, but they are unconstitutional.

Burt, pretty good job,
but for the #1 for English is something that the government should have no say in, as much as I sympathize with your frustration. As was said well enough, it is a private business and their decision on how to serve their customers.

While I agree that abortion should not be an issue with all the birth control methods available, it seems that there are way too many people who are too stupid not to get pregnant when they don't want to. I say that if you want to abort a child, you should get your punishment for Vick and be fixed so that we don't have to pay for another and another and another, etc.

your no conservative
First, let me commend you for making the distinction between CONSERVATIVE and REPUBLICAN. Unfortunately, you my friend, are a REPUBLICAN! I am a conservative.

You wrote:

"For openers, I'm in favor of capital punishment. The sixth commandment, by the way, doesn't really say that thou shalt not kill. When correctly translated, it states that thou shalt not murder. I can not imagine how anybody can argue that a person who commits cold-blooded homicide is entitled to out-live his innocent victim by 40 or 50 years."

How about those we have MURDERED that were not actually guilty? With modern DNA methods many wrongly accused have been freed.

you also wrote:

"...unless they swear on a Bible..."

Are you suggesting that those of other faiths are not to be included in your brand of conservatism? Sounds Republican to me.

Also:

"I would acknowledge that a state of war exists between Islamic fundamentalism and the civilized world, and I would do whatever is required to win it."

There is no war between Islam and "civilization". There is, however, a war between immoral money changers (Bush, Cheney, etc.) who have sold out the idea of democracy to line their own pockets. Why on earth do we support despotic and apartheid states like Israel, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait? OIL AND NO BID CONTRACTS!

Get real and think for yourself. THAT is what REAL conservatives do.

Rich L
While agree that government should have no say in whether or not a business posts in multi-language format, the federal and State governments are the worst offenders in this area.

#1 for English
I also agree that this should be narrowed down to gvt. services. I would also like to point out that on the phones the choices may be between English and Spanish, but on gvt. websites info is available in anything from Arabic to Vietnamese.
Take a look:

http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/multilanguage/multilang.htm?urlnet99

Okay Burt
You may define your conservatism any way you like, but it does not make you right.

The death penalty is too much power to put into the hands of government employees. Political appointees, and hires, tend to be perversely incentivised. Those of us concerned with justice should think carefully about giving life and death power to politicians.

Vouchers are only a little better than what we have now. Government rebate programs do not address the basic problem with government schools. The power inherent in molding our children's minds for 12 years is the core problem with our education system. Vouchers promise only a bandaid, not a solution.

Independent Minded
Bravo Burt!

I agree regarding most of your points, and am prochoice. I do not want my tax dollars supporting an unwanted child, who may become a violent criminal.

How about hydroelectric power instead of nukes?

#@$%! Foreigner
I thought the definition of conservative went something like this:

I know I am not the smartest person in the world.
I doubt you are the smartest person around.
I think it would be vain to suggest that the smartest person ever to grace this earth must be alive today.

We are, unfortunately, unable to benefit from what future generations are going to achieve and we are therefore limited to draw upon the wisdom and achievements of past generations.

Now, no one will argue that we should relie upon 200 year old medical advice. There are many areas where there has been measurable progress.

However, human nature appears to me to be pretty constant and therefore I can think of no reason to reject customs and morals that have shown themselves to work and instead chase after the latest fad.

SJ Doc writes:
'Many of your preferences make it clear that you trust government (as an institution) entirely too damned much.

But that's definitely "conservative," all right. Political roots about as deep as those of Great Birnam Wood (ambling along to Dunsinane).

Every year strengthens my impression that if it were 1775 again, I'd see most of today's "conservatives" cheering on the guys in the red uniform coats.'

What you wrote needed to be emphasized. When a person allows a single label to identify them they are in trouble. The concept of conservative has been hijacked to imply less government and more people friendly. But, for me, conservative means don't rock the boat if it is kind of working.

Our country has had so much leftward slide that conservativism is not the answer. You need to inject the antithesis of Socialism to make a correction. I believe that correction is Libertarianism. But we shouldn't go totally down the Libertarian road. Some how we need to find that middle ground between total Socialism and total Libertarianism. This will never happen as long as the discussion is about conservatism vs socialism.

"Official" English
The idea of making English the "official" language is not conservative, it is reactionary. What Americans should object to, is the use of tax money to publish official documents in languages other than English.

Individuals and companies can use any language, or languages they like in the course of their daily business. They correctly have the freedom to do so. That should not be interfered with.

Laws always come with unintended consequences. Any law regarding the mandated use of English will ultimately lead to "language police", and horrible injustices in the name of language purity. No true conservative should ever support such foolish, and unnecessary extension of political power.

My one concern is your position (or non-position in this column) on abortion. Sure, contraceptives would supposedly make abortion a moot point, but what it comes down to is a question of whether or not you think a woman's pregnancy is a "fetus" that can be regarded with the same rights and status as say, a bug, and squished as the woman chooses because of a right to her own body, or if you regard that pregnancy as a person, and that person is thus granted rights.

You say we should move on, but how? Are you saying to ignore the issue and give up on it? I would hope that for someone as concerned with justice as you are on the points of pedophilia and the death penalty that this would be just as much of a hot-button issue with you as those are. It's once again a question of human rights and justice.

That said, the other credentials you list are solidly conservative. It's part of the reason I scratch my head at your support of Giuliani, who seems to match up with so few. Now that Thompson's getting in September 6th, will your support switch yet again, or are you committed to Giuliani?

Hank
And "your" an idiot.

Nuclear Power
It's nice to see someone else out there who understands the benefits, nay, the necessity, of nuclear power. That's one thing France does right...maybe THE one thing.

aspacia
Hydro would be wonderful if there were any good locations left. Most of the places that were being considered before the enviro-nazis shut them down were marginal from a cost/benefit standpoint to begin with. In order to have a viable hydro unit first you need a river or large stream, then you need a gorge or valley that has a substrata of firm rock. Finally these must be located in areas of relatively light population. You can get by without all of that but as you move further from it the less beneficial it becomes. When a project is already borderline and the enviro-nazis start tying it up in court and costing you huge gobs of money with delays you can not complete the project.

Burt, you missed one
I read all the way to the end hoping that you would address gun control in your "why I'm a Conservative" column. With the Parker case, the McCarthy semi-auto gun ban and the Virginia Tech shooting high on the radar, I just expected you to mention it.

Marc
http://www.SaveTheGuns.com

A fine point
Those who argue that pressing #1 for English etc. is free marketing are correct. Where I agree with Burt is that the GOVERNMENT is mandating bi-lingual (heck, multi-lingual) accomodations. Thanks Clinton for your Executive Order (can't remember the number) that instituted that fiasco.

Burt is also correct on the abortion debate. He cleverly side-stepped saying how he felt about abortion...just that he failed to understand why it was even an issue anymore. Unfortunately, it is still an issue, and until the conversation changes from "pro-choice" meaning access to abortion to "pro-Choice" meaning control of one's body (contraception/abstinence...take your pick) we cannot ignore the issue.

I am amazed that this article on his "core beliefs" has been contrued to an advocation of more government intervention. I didn't get that from his writing.

He seems to share a conservative viewpoint to my eyes. I would only add Limited Government, No Gun Control, Property Rights (overturn Kelo), and Low Taxes.

Great idea to divest ourselves from most foreign aid as well...we seem to be handing it out pretty well locally to the illegal aliens...Why send it out when they can come here and help themselves?

One More about immigration
Nice list Burt and I agree with you on all of them. I would add one more element, though.

I want a reasonable and sound immigration policy. I think that immigration should proceed in a fashion similar to the NFL draft. We should seek only the best and brightest and allow a good number of them to come here. We really don't need tens of thousands of migrant farm workers if a team of 30 engineers can design equipment to do the same job. (Oh, and the reason that this has not been done is because your fruit and vegies don't cost enough to justify the capital expense.)

Let's not forget that this country was built on the immigration of the best from many nations. So, everyone who wants in with an advanced degree - come on in. After all, if we don't let them in, the work will migrate "over there." (Offshoring) We already compete on a global scale, and I would rather their income taxes be used here to improve our infrastructure, not their's.

Thank you and on with the discussion.

WRT the Vick case ...
... was it Gilbert and Sullivan who said, "Let the punishment fit the crime"?

He should be put in an arena and made to fight to the death with another pin-head guilty of a similar crime, complete with cheering crowds.

"Your no conservative"
Hank,

OH PLEASE!! If you are going to rail on someone in a public forum, PLEASE learn the difference between "your" and "you're"! It makes you appear no more intelligent than Rachel in "Friends".

But as to the points of your rant:

Innocent people being killed: Yes, it is a tragedy when an innocent person is killed by the state. But I believe it is much less common than innocent people that are killed by people that should have been killed in the first place.

Swearing on the Bible: Like it or not, this country was founded on Christian principles, and draws much of its former strength from that. There is no reason to shy away from having people swear on the Bible. And no, not all religions are created equal. Some are absolutely barbarous, leading to slavery, mutilation and subjugation of women, and the killing of innocents in its name. Which leads me to your third point.

War on civilization: There is not a Muslim nation that is at peace with its neighbors or even with itself. The nations of the middle east stopped developing some 500 years ago, and encouraged by Christianity, the West has left them behind. This has made fundamentalist Muslims jealous and angry and has NOTHING to do with Bush, Cheney or any of the other red herrings you care to throw up.

Burt
Will you run for President? We need a crotchety old coot like you in the White House. Someone who does what is right, and the rest of the world bedammed!

Why I am conservative
Because to be a liberal:

1. You have to be against capital punishment, but support abortion on demand.

2. You have to believe that businesses create oppression and governments create prosperity.

3. You have to believe that guns in the hands of law-abiding Americans are more of a threat than U.S. Nuclear weapons technology in the hands of Chinese and North Korean communists.

4. You have to believe that there was no art before Federal funding.

5. You have to believe that global temperatures are less affected by cyclical documented changes in the earth's climate and more affected by soccer moms driving SUV's.

6. You have to believe that gender roles are artificial but being homosexual is natural.

7. You have to believe that the AIDS virus is spread by a lack of federal funding.

8. You have to believe that the same teacher who can't teach fourth graders how to read is somehow qualified to teach those same kids about sex.

9. You have to believe that hunters don't care about nature, but loony activists who have never been outside of San Francisco do.

10. You have to believe that self-esteem is more important than actually doing something to earn it.

11. You have to believe that Mel Gibson spent $25 million of his own money to make The Passion of the Christ for financial gain only.

12. You have to believe the NRA is bad because it supports certain parts of the Constitution, while the ACLU is good because it supports certain parts of the Constitution.

Or Leo...
...we could say it is a shame the fetus aborted wasn't you. You are in favor of such practices, it would only have been fair.

Why Are Labels Important??
You believe what you believe, why is it important that you (Burt Prelutsky)want to be labeled a conservative and belong to the group? Why do you have a need to defend your conservatism? Why is this label so important?

Here is why....

Conservatives are obssed with labels. It seems it clarifies for them where people are coming from. It makes things simplier to label someone conservative or Liberal. Then you know who the good guys and bad guys are.

Conservatives want to belong to a group. Religion, Military, Nationalism are defined in their image and used to impose conformity and control. Organizing conservatives is like herding sheep. Organizing Liberals is like herding cats..

Hey Burt
You are compelled to be conservative, you have no choice in the matter.

In order to be Liberal you would not be able to use constructive analysis and good judgement in your thought process, as we witness by some of the Left postings above.

Your opinions may not always reflect my own but your reasoning for reaching them always strikes me as well thought out. Another trait you would have to abandon on a Leftward jouney.

Stedes
Here, we'll educate the liberals

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk7yqlTMvp8

stedes
Labels like:

Bigotted Christians
Neo-Cons
Bushitler
Racist
Homophobes
Evangelical extremist

These are labels that seem to be important for Liberals to use towards people who do not share their ideology.

Also I'm rather curious, would a none organized governing body, as you say Liberals are like herding cats, be preferable to an organized government. Without organization you have no government, you have anarchy.

When it comes to citizenship - Part I
As an Australian who has lived in the US for 11 years now I can't give up my Australian citizenship, and I have struggled with the idea of becoming a US citizen because of the "Oath of Citizenship"

I can't "absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen". Everything else I am in 100% agreement with.

I have friends that have said this for citizenship, but I am struggling with it. I may still say it but, I don't know many Americans who would entirely renounce allegience and fidelity to the US.

More qualifiers than necessary
Burt, I'll say I'm a conservative because I respect the written language in the Constitution and let it go at that. The real distinction between Conservatives and Liberals is their interpretation of the Constitution. Conservatives, like Thomas and Scalia, believe in stirct adherence (if we don't like what it says, amend it). Liberals, like Ginsburg and Souter, believe that it's a living document to be changed whenever it doesn't suit the Liberal agenda. For example, Liberals decided that "public use" really meant "public benefit".

On that basis alone, one can be proud of being Conservative and ashamed of being Liberal.

Skiddles
It's OK with me if you keep alligence to both. Australias and Brits are our best allies in this world, and as far as I'm concerned, brothers and sisters to Americans.

Still Sane
Why I am a Conservative. I am seventy-three. Grandfather. Volunteer US Navy (Korean War)
I am a conservative because everyone else that is left over is insane.
Jordan Alexander Orosz, The Old Sailor, San Diego Ca.

When it comes to citizenship - Part II
I wish there was a concept of "Resident Ally" whereby I could swear allegiance and fidelity to the US in the same measure as I have for my homeland.

I would fight to defend either, and since Australia and America have always fought on the same side I can never see a time that this would not be the case.

As I am married to a wonderful American girl and have 2.1 kids who are American, I assume I will die and be burried here one day.

When it comes to citizenship - Part III
There are only a few things I lack as a permanent resident. One I plan on never needing, that is immunity from deportation. The second is the right to vote, which is a BIG thing for me.

In Australia, you can be fined if you fail to turn up to vote. I have always considered it my duty to vote, and I miss that privelige.

Burt you might be a
social conservative, but you clearly do not love liberty. You favor using the coercive power of government to impose what you think is right upon the rest of us. That makes you no better than a Democrat. You would ban businesses from dealing with customers in whatever language they chose. You would prevent defense attorneys from vigorously defending their clients. This last point is particularly scary when coupled with your firm support of capital punishment. And, you would "close the borders" preventing free trade. None of this favors small government or maximizes personal liberty.

The problem with your approach Burt is that it only works so long as your friends are in power. Once the power of the government grows it can be readily hijacked by whomever is in power. Today, you limit a defendant's right to a defense because you don't want to coddle criminals. Tomorrow, you could be dragged to jail with no opportunity to mount a vigorous defense for committing a hate crime by opposing the gay agenda. Who is going to protect you when the "other guys" take over. What are you going to do when they come for you Burt?

Burt
Another great column!

Why are Labels and Groups Important?
leory - you are right. But I am not talking about name-calling and attacks, but self-labeling.

Back to my original premise, why is it important for a conservative to label themseleves a conservative, as Burt seems defensive. Why should he care?

If a person is truly an independent thinker and intellectually honest and forms their ideas and opinions objectively, why does the label matter?

We have conservative and liberal think tanks, commentators, web sites, publications and other groups and organizations. All to promote a one-sided thinking.

I think they are all intellectually dishonest. Moveon.org and Littlegreen footballs. A true independent thinker is willing to change views and explore other ideas. To be as objective as they can. Not to be attached to an ideology. We have to recognize we are imperfect human beings. We cannot always be right.

Sometimes liberals are right, sometimes conservatives are right, but we will never admit it.

We have lost intellectual honesty in this country (I accuse both sides equally) and it is divisive.

Leo
You are a prime example of someone who feels far too much and thinks far too little.

Life is a tragedy for those who feel, and a comedy for those who think.

Skiddles
I respect your dilemma, but you worry too much. Welcome to American citizenship.

stedes
So then why do sports teams, business' etc. also label themselves? Why do armys' wear distinctive uniforms? For many reasons, not the least of which showing some backbone and taking a stand. It is also self identification. Why do we call women, 'women' and men, 'men'? Get over yourself. It isn't the label so much that is the problem. It is when people try redefine the English language and what the label means.

Bill
Are you another one of those "I'm more conservative than you!" types? When a vacuum exists it will be filled with something. Liberals will be more than happy to fill it with more taxes, restrictions, and govt. Burt is talking about using the govt. to remove restrictions not impose more.

Bi-lingual everything
For those who think that all this bilingual junk is a free market principle you are right, however not all free market principles are good. You are confusing the two. Much of the immigration problems we see today, like the lack of assimulation and the arrogance is our own fault. We have created far too many crutches for immigrants so they don't have to assimulate. We have ham strung them. Because of that you have the advent of advocacy groups demanding more. It is basic human nature. We will go for the crutch every time because in the short term it seems easier. If I were an immigrant I wouldn't put in the sweat equity either if I didn't have to. Since we have bilingual everything, including ballots, ESL education, why bother? Where's the incentive?

Great Work - missed a few
Fair Tax - Eliminate IRS. Earmark Transparency. Line item Veto. Outlaw Fair Doctrine completely. Penalize States who violate Federal Law - no funding. 100% support of laws - including Legislatures, Lawyers. Incorporate Tort Reform. Term Limits-City, Country, State, Federal, & Judges. Recall Capabilities at all levels. Repeal McCain/Feingold. Outlaw Insurance Companies from closing policies which violate the concept of Insurance. Address Internet scams and off shore illegal activities within USA. Outlaw all non-citizens from Citizens rights for Social Services, same rights in our courts-we don't need to provide a lawyer - let his Country of Origin provide their lawyer, this doesn't say tat he does not have right to fair trial. Initiate Equal (not free-but equal)Trade Laws. A lot more here America, let's add to it. Go to americansolutions.com and get involved.

Lolo2
You should read Bill's comment again; you completely missed his meaning.

Jimmy D, wow!
You may have established a new record, for the most wrongheaded ideas ever packed into one post.

Lolo2,
how does limiting a defendant's ability to defend himself in court; preventing businesses from dealing with customers as they wish and barring free trade remove governmental restrictions on liberty?

stedes
We all define ourselves in some fashion on nearly every asspect in life:

I'm a Chey guy, my brother-in-law is a Ford man.

In few instances, except for extremes, given two alternatives is one always preferable to the other.

Even in your own writings you all but label yourself as an Independant. You will always identify with something, if not a person is not involved and to be involved you must find identity, one does not exist without the other.

Burt and Pedophiles
Burt said:

"I do not understand why a so-called civilized society allows pedophiles to run loose."

This is an issue that baffles me to the core. For every pedo, there are ten libs ready to stand up for them.

Bill O'Reilly is very hard on child predators and the judges that are soft on them. His stance on the issue has earned him scorn from liberals across the country, and they act as if he's some Nazi for wanting pedophiles to be locked up for most of the rest of their lives. I would like to think that 100% of America would agree with O'Reilly's stance, but it appears they don't.

It amazes me. This shouldn't be an issue where it's only traditionalist conservatives that are outraged. I cannot begin to fathom what is going on inside somebody's head when they can bash us for wanting to see pedophiles put underground.

Of course, these are the same folks with "free Mumia" stickers on their Volvos. Disgusting. I'm just waiting for the day that it's legal to deport them to France, Mexico, or anywhere else where they can get "free" medical care, gun control, etc. There has got to be another place where the libs can have their "Utopia" and they can leave the rest of us alone. Either that or let us Americans mow them down with Ma Dueces.

The execution of "innocents"
There are costs to all social policies. If truly innocent defendants were ultimately executed -- and I'm not aware of any actual cases in which that's happened -- then tragic as it is, it's an unavoidable cost of that social policy.

A policy I happen to endorse, incidentally, as I'm pro death penalty.

I'm also pro 75 mph speed limits on freeways, a social policy for which we pay a much higher cost in truly innocent lives each year; thousands of people die annually on our freeways. Most if not all those lives would be saved if we lowered the legal speed limit on the freeways to 5 mph.

Leroy:
I always considered myself an independent when I was younger, that is, I liked Mopars.

But I've grown, matured, so to say. Fords are better.

On bi-lingualism
It seems we've determined some imperative to have ballots and other legal documents available in multiple languages. Why is that?

A requirement of naturalization is the ability to understand English.

In order to get a pilot license, you must demonstrate the ability to speak, read and understand English, and all radio communications are mandated to be carried out in English.

I served on jury duty on Wednesday, and one of the requirements for service was the ability to understand English.

So why are ballots required to be printed in other languages, hmmmm.....?

Bill
As to your defendent comment I can only say "What?" As to your free trade comment, just because it's free trade doesn't necessarily mean it's totally good. Think outside the box. This type of free trade has done alot of harm to alot of immigrants and to society as a whole. When free trade erodes the very society it is trying to benefit it is no longer good, and it won't remain free trade very long. As you can see it has eroded principles away and we are constantly seeing a very confused society becoming increasingly more dependent on govt. I absolutely believe in free trade but it needs to be practiced within a certain set of priciples. It like most things in life can go too far.

LOL, Burt
Here you wrote a beautiful column defending yourself as to why you truly are conservative, and it seems you'll have to write a Part II to further defend yourself again!

Your point is made: Just because us readers may not agree with everything you state does not make you less of a conservative than they would like to peg you as.

As an observer, I see mostly who will jeer you for not thinking in link-step with them. It's the libertarian fan club of "He Who Shall Not Be Named" that is running for president. I didn't say it, but you know who I'm speaking of.

English phone buttons
Here's a very great link, to a very cool song on that topic:

http://www.youtube.com:80/watch?v=sEJfS1v-fU0

It's called "Press One For English"

Watch it; you'll love it.

Burt :
Thanks for another great article . You have become my #1 must read on TH . The way you combine common sense with humor never fails to put a smile on my face . This is very much appreciated .

Language.
I agree with the intent, but not with the method of:

"I would make English our official language, and I would out-law all those things that require you to hit button #1 for English, #2 for Spanish."

I would prefer phone numbers with "Language Prefixes". That is, if you wanted to do your business in English you would dial, for example, ***-**1-9999 instead of ***-**2-9999. Any number with a "1" at the third digit would always get you English and any number with a "2" at the third digit would get you Spanish, and so on. I wouldn't make English the "official" language, but I would make it the "default" language and let those who wanted to serve the customer (or the taxpayer) use other numbers like the example above to serve them. In time, Americans and immigrants would all know (or accidentally discover) that a "1" at a certain position in all business/government prefixes of non-residential numbers will be in English.

If a person is smart enough to get to America, they're smart enough to learn what prefix digit of the phone number will get them service in their language.

Abortion and bilingual phone menus
I disagree that we should just move on on the issue of abortion. As far as abortion is concerned, just banning the practice is not enough, but rather, we need to get us back to a morality in which people would not put themselves so readily into a situation in which abortion is the resolution. That is, people need to take more responsibility for themselves and not just rut like rabbits, without thinking of the consequences. If they were more grown-up about it, the question of aborting a baby wouldn't even come up.

As for bilingual phone menus, I agree with the other posters, if a bank or other business chooses to offer a blingual menu, because its customers speak other languages, I don't have a problem with that, let the market decide. I do have a problem with any government, be it the federal, a state or local, mandating that any such business or organization must offer it. I think that is more truly conservative, than to offer a thinly veiled zenophobic statement that it should be outlawed.

Other than that, I agree pretty much with BP's points.

Hillary delenda est.

Sorry, typo
I meant "xenophobic", not "zenophobic". Eye reelie du no hau too spel.

The Writer Responds
Shoot, I went to sleep at about 2:30 a.m. and read four messages. Then I awake at 9:00 and spend the next hour reading 76. The only problem is that it makes it difficult to respond to all the readers. That'll teach me to sleep past dawn on Monday or Friday.

First off, I am not surprised that a few readers took me to task over one item or another. So be it. By and large, they're the same folks who led me to write the piece in the first place. I've discovered that the only people more dogmatic than liberals are those conservatives who they can walk on water.

I should make it clear that when I objected to those buttons requiring people to choose English or Spanish, I wasn't really referring to businesses. I don't care what they do, just as I don't care if business signs in L.A.'s Chinatown or Koreatown or Armeniatown are in their native language. What I object to is having federal, state or city governments employing them or having ballots, as we do here in California, in dozens of foreign languages.

Skiddles: I understand your dilemma, but you chose to leave Australia and settle here in America. That's like divorcing one woman in order to marry another. Nobody is asking you to hate your homeland just as you're not compelled to despise your ex-spouse, but you are not entitled to commit bigamy.

As for my supporting Giuliani, I am not saying that I won't switch to Fred Thompson. When I wrote the original piece, I said my problem with Thompson was that he was too big to convincingly portray a coquette. I liked the fact that Giuliani wasn't standing on the sidelines, but was engaged in the battle. The bottomline is that I will support anyone opposing Mrs. Clinton in November of 2008.

Shell: I know who you're talking about. His initials are R.P. and, like that other R.P., Ross Perot, he seems to have his heart set on playing the spoiler in 2008.

Multilingual, multicultural, *mulch*
--
Gotta use "mulch" because the vulgar term for that which is most commonly thought of as compostable automatically blocks posts on this forum.

Oh, well.

I really don't mind the modern trend for supporting immigrants' continued use of their native tongues (particularly Spanish). My reasons are entirely selfish.

1) They'll never advance economically.

This means I won't have to compete with exclusively Hispanophone candidates for any skill position in the economy (unless the goddam government forces "preferences" on employers). They're a bunch of cripples right from the git-go.

My grandparents on both sides, fresh of the boat from Italy, *forced* their kids to speak English, and my parents only dropped into pidgen Sicilian at the kitchen table when they wanted to gossip over matters that they didn't want us kids to hear.

How d'you think I learned Italian? All the *good* cussin' and such was couched in the patois of Palermo, not "Amerigan'."

2) It makes me feel arrogantly superior.

Here's proof that I'm better, stronger, and smarter than a whole bunch of people (in *spite* of my in-laws' opinions of me).

Even at my age, I;ve shown that I can learn Spanish well enough to diagnose and treat these folks when they can't even speak enough English to tell me where it hurts.

Case closed.

Okay I had to laugh out loud at your post! I have one set of grandparents that did the same thing! My grandfather was Italian but grandmother wasn't. He taught her Italian so they could talk without sending everyone out of the room! I guess we can put a check under the column of why sometimes bi-lingual is good!

Why am I a Conservative?

Full Disclosure, I haven’t been one for very long, in dog years, I guess you could say I’m still a puppy. I can’t put my finger on the day I became full-bore, but I know the day that started the process – 9/11/01. That was the day I think we all changed a little bit, some more than others, but for me it was monumental.

On 9/18/01, after a two year engagement I married my wife, two weeks after that I adopted her only child (his father died when he was two). That four week time frame took me at warp speed from a forty something, nonpolitical, carefree kind of a guy, who, at one more times than not, found himself on the opposite side of whatever argument my very old fashioned, conservative father would make to a principled, steadfast, patriotic American dad.

There’s an old saying that time changes everything. That may be true, but in my case it was events on the ground, a sense of pride in my heart and duty to fulfill that redirected my course and now guides me.

Dear Burt
Thank you for reinforcing every single reason I am proud to be a liberal.

I only agreed with you on one thing- Michael Vick- and seeing as PETA falls on my side of the fence and not your's, and also that most conservatives here are only disagreeing with you on that very same subject, I would say that's the only issue for which you've made a logical analysis.

But, thanks again for listing the numerous issues toward which conservatives remain largely brain-dead.

Great Article Burt
English in California?
English is the Official State Language of California.

All we need do is find a way to force our Legislature to enforce the State Constitution, Article III, Section 6

We can sue, but who has the money to take that bunch on?

Boromir
Welcome to the club. It feels really good to shed the PC crap and not be afraid to stand up for what is right, doesn't it? My conversion from a non-political to a staunch conservative took about ten years but was cemented by the birth of my oldest child. In that instant, seeing the miracle of birth, the creation of life, feeling the blessing of God more acutely than ever before in my life, I knew that everything would change. And it did. Now I understand, as you do, what my father was always talking about. Congrats.

lolo
At least your grandparents spoke a different language. My Mother had to try to convince us that my Irish grandfather wasn't cussin' whenever he said "shite" or "arse". When you tell a 7 year old that a word isn't a curse word (and it is) bad things happen!

Would somebody PLEASE explain to Hank...
that Halliburton has never benefitted from a US government no-bid contract.

They have performed the same functions for the government for the last 30 years, winning the contract each time it came up for renewal, except once. That one time, the President overrode the bid process, and awarded the contract to Halliburton (This is where the liberals scream, "AHA!!!!!!"). The President who overrode the bid process? William Jefferson Clinton.

A Random question: Why do hard core liberals always sound so anti-semetic?

Mr P
Well, this article had about the opposite effect of what it intended. Totally predictable. Too many people are fixated on one issue or another. Here is the one issue that we all need to be concerned about because, if we don't take care of it, none of the rest will matter. We need to keep Hillary out of the WH, even if it means choking down a vote for Rudy. Ron Paul (there, I said it) may not be electable but he appears to be the only candidate on either side that actually reflects many of the positions supported by true-blue conservatives. I am not necessarily voting for the guy, but he does what he says he will and has demonstrated more principle and resolve than any of these other fools. But he should bow out if he does not get the nomination (we don't need another Ross Perot). Another great column, BTW.

CVN65
Thanks. It does feel good. I guess my own blindness allows me to commiserate with the left, but the stakes are so high today because of the Islamic storm approaching, I feel our time is limited.

Well, my time is limited as well, gotta go make some hay to cover the dinner table - thanks again for your post :)

BURT, I AM SO ANGRY
that I was unable to read your column earlier, when I would have been able to comment earlier as well. Now and then the trappings of living take me away from the confounded "confuser," as one of the old talk show hosts in Chicago used to call his computer.

My comment's short. This whole column could have been written about my own views -- particularly the last paragraph.

I would be surprised if your views didn't comport with the majority of most citizens here in these United States. (And I have not read one other comment yet -- no time.)

CVN65
ROFLMAO!!!! that was too funny!!! i can imagine the rioting that caused!!!!

Is that all you douches have! Your arguments are so vacant that you have to focus on spelling? This coming from those who speak in tongues on Sundays.

This speaks to the sad state of your party today. YOU'RE losing in '08! Have fun spanking YOUR snakes at church.

Did I ever mention Halliburton? And, are you kidding? Of course they benefited. And I'm the liberal? I'm not the one who loves throwing welfare around, whether it be to anchor babies or your beloved oil companies. Difference between you snake handlers and us REAL conservatives is we can read our constitution. We learned REAL good in that there school house.

Do you know we could have sent every qualified child of college age in the US to university FOR FREE, if we hadn't gone in to Iraq? But, then again, I can see education isn't your top priority.

The Writer Returns
Hank: It really didn't bear repeating.

It really does confound me every week when liberals post their rude and ignorant remarks. I would have imagined that non-conservatives posting at TH would go out of their way to be polite and persuasive. But I suppose if they were bright enough to take that approach, they wouldn't be liberals in the first place.

Totally b man.

Seems that big brother is looking in again given they don't have to check with the FISA court.

Oh burt
Did the truth hurt your feelings again? Maybe you should try Dems. they are the party of hugs and lollipops.

independents like me are here to bring a dose of reality back to the party that believes George Bush is a "good Christian man".

It takes a little more than faith to formulate an effective foreign policy, as we have seen over the past seven years.

hank
Are you just pretending to have some regard for American children or do you really want them to have an education?

Do you support School Vouchers and Boy Scouts & everything good for children?

That is really novel for a Liberal.

Myopine
I am so sorry you folks can't recognize a TRUE conservative anymore. Have you ever even heard of Jefferson or Goldwater?

No, I don't support vouchers, just as I don't support tax exemptions for religious organizations.

It violates the first amendment of our constitution:

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

Until we vote to get rid of the representative democracy set up by our forebearers, I am content with allowing them to make our laws and pay the price at the ballot box.

By the way, I WAS a teacher in our public schools and I know well how entrenched they are in old ideas and methodology. That is why I quit. My plan is to start my own school (sans religion).

I will not rely on public monies to serve parents and students. Instead I am soliciting donations from local businesses to set up an endowment for those who cannot afford the tuition.

So it can be done.

But, the biggest hurdle to educating kids is family. Many of my former students grew up neglected and/or abused and that is why we are offering boarding options for our most troubled students.

Does this answer your question?

Lemme Guess
Hank...

You're a Ron Paul fan, right? Just a simple yes or no would suffice without the links and copying and pasting if you are.

My Opine
Oh Joy! Another I am more conservative than you are so there! Might want to point out that Jefferson was more of the original libertarian and Goldwater was a true libertarian.

Shells
Why is it Libertarians always think they are the true conservatives and really holier than thou about it?

hank
That long winded tap dance raised more questions than it answered.

How could any sane person confuse universal school vouchers with Government dictating a specific religion?

How could anyone with such a severe reading comprehension problem possibly teach school?

You a "true Conservative" ?

Bingo lolo!
Yes, REAL conservatives formed the Libertarian party in 1971 as tribute to Goldwater. They saw the snake handlers were taking over the party and they formed a more pure party based on REAL conservative values.

opine
Unfortunately for you, our forebearers set up a REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY. That means we give our congress the responsibility to pass laws on our behalf. Like I said, until a revolution occurs or we vote to change our constitution we are stuck with it.

Vouchers represent anarchistic principles:

http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/anarchy

Like I said, If you can muster enough votes to change our constitution into this type of system more power to you.

Until then I will work with the system we have.

Good luck!

Lolo2
In America you can think anything you want to and call yourself anything you want to.

Remember awhile back when we had a loonie cult that committed suicide so they could ride a comet?

We have all sorts of people in America and they are entitled to have any whacky ideas they wish as long as they do not harm other citizens.

LOLO
I suggest you and Shells, start your own political party that stresses your evangelical "values".

If you are so confident that most Americans would agree with you it should be a slam dunk. It worked for the Taliban!

Absolutey Opine!
How about that Ted Haggard fellow or David Koresh? God Bless America!

Let me guess shells...
You are a Ted Haggard fan.

Until it reaches 100% I will always have doubts. Hope you can sleep at night knowing the state has possibly MURDERED innocent citizens in your name. Even just one makes my stomach turn. It could happen to any of us.

I suggest you watch "The Thin Blue Line" by Errol Morris.

hank
You see my point exactly.
You are entitled to act as foolish as you want to.

I do wish you would be a little less arrogant about it though and try to control that ego of yours.
That ego is going to carry you away like a hot air balloon!

opine
DITTO! You speak Limbaughnese, right?

hank
Did you learn that cute little comeback from some little girl in school?
You going to recite the "Rubber& Glue" thing next?

If they let people like you teach in our schools I can understand why our children are being so poorly educated.

Hank
I think you're missing the point on school vouchers. Our public schools are a mess,as I think you already alluded to.The teachers unions have a stranglehold and this will not change without the voucher system.I don't recall anyone stating that vouchers should only be used for a religious education. If a voucher system were initiated,I believe all sorts of private schools would emerge to provide a superior alternative to public schools. As it stands our tax dollars are just being wasted with the teachers unions constantly screaming for more. After all,it's for the kids.

Hank....Hank...Hank....
See, this is what happens when a true libertarian drinks too much pop before bedtime.

Pace yourself....

As far as my evangelical values, why don't you help me out there, I'm a Jew and wouldn't know where to begin.

Yes Lolo2.....These libertarians are really freaking me out, for want of a better word. They are tenacious, to say the least, but they seem almost brainwashed and cult-like with their fervor and righteousness. There's no middle ground. Frightening.

burt
you have it all wrong. Commonsense ideas don;t work for libs. n their world generalizations can't take in all the exemptions they always find for every solution to problems

burt 2
my suggested punishment for vick. He serves his entire sdentence at the local pet shelter cleaning all the pet cages, with his tongue

TO ALL
I think we need to focus on the things we can agree on. I think we all agree that our current school system is defective.I think we can also agree that the execution of an innocent person is tragic. The wonderful thing about this country is that it is comprised of 50 states. We can try different methods in different states and figure out what works best.Hank, let me ask you this,do you believe that someone who is guilty of murder, beyond all doubt, should be executed?

CR
I'm just saying how our country spends the tax dollars is not up to the individual. That is called ANARCHY.

I think this war is a crock of sh!t. Maybe Congress should allow me to pull my money from the government and spend it on my pet projects. Sounds good. Unfortunately, until I can convince others of the wisdom of this policy I gotta go with what we have. And I'm sure like you voucher folk I am far from close to that reality

Regarding schools. NEWS FLASH: It isn't so much the schools as it is the parents. Unfortunately, blue collar wages aren't once what they were because of offshoring and illegal immigration.

So, most of us have to have two earners in the family to just barely scrape by. What is the result? We neglect our children out of necessity. This is the REAL problem with education.

A caller made an interesting point on a radio show I heard the other day regarding merit pay for teachers. Which, by the way, is being advocated by the Obama campaign.

He said something to the affect, 'what if we payed dentists on a merit based system? They may do a fantastic job of cleaning your teeth and filling cavities, but they can't control whether you brush and floss at home.'

That pretty much sums it up for me. Teachers can only do so much. It is the parents responsibility to make sure Jenny is doing her homework and reading enough.

Too many of us rush into having children without being prepared for the financial strain. And frankly, too many of us simply live beyond our means at the expense of family time.

That is why I think vouchers are a moot point. Unless you are unhappy that Bible verses aren't being read in the classroom, then vouchers are not the answer.

Hank..
both Hitler & Stalin would be proud of you...

There you go splitting hairs. Let me guess...you just love Benny Elon.

Yaaay! Here comes the antisemite police. I can feel a good guilt session coming on. This is what the snake handlers do when they have run out of ideas

I had no idea I was an evangelical, but if hank says so it must be true because you know he is so much more conservative and all knowing.

hank
You make the standard Communist comment about Iraq.
Are you just playing Liberal Talking Ape or have you bothered to study that situation?

That war is centuries old.
During that time I am sure other "Feel Good" wishful thinkers like you have wished it to end.

Regardless of who started it or how we came to be in it;
I doubt WE will live to see the end of it.

Iraq is the present battlefield.
We have only 2 options.
1 We can continue to take the war to the enemy in Iraq.
2 We can retreat, surrender Iraq and wait for the enemy to bring the war to us in Hometown USA.

Think 9/11 before you scoff.

hank
What in the heck do vouchers have to do with bible verses? Are you really as anti-religion as you seem?

Lolo2
Atheists are not the same as Agnostics.
Agnostics simply do not believe in a supreme being.
Atheists want to deny YOU the right to believe in God.
He is not just anti-jew, he is anti-religion.

He calls you a "Snake Handler" while he tries to trample your rights to freedom of religion.

And he thinks HE is fit to teach YOUR children!

My Opine
I know it, but I just couldn't connect his dots about vouchers and bible verses. Forgive me.

If He's a Conservative ...

If He's a Conservative ...
Why is he backing a liberal 9Rudy the RINO) for President?

Well Burt, you could do better
than this. I like to argue with a columnist, but this time I can only say you weren’t tough enough on the abortion and death penalty.

I think an abortion should be permitted only if requested by a female who is pregnant. And the idiot who made her pregnant should be castrated.

As for the death penalty, let’s speed it up. Here’s a letter to the Editor I had published years ago, with an added comment at the end.
-------

If you think the death penalty doesn’t work, next time the doctor prescribes medicine for a serious illness, don’t take it, just put it on a shelf. Occasionally look in the bottle, shake it, and after 15 years of suffering, take the medicine. Then you’ll say, “That medicine didn’t work.”

On February 15, 1933, G. Zangara attempted to assassinate President-elect Roosevelt. He killed the mayor of Chicago instead, and was executed a month later, March 20, 1933. The death penalty was swift and effective. Zangara never killed again!

Both medicine and the death penalty work best when used immediately, not 15 years after the fact.
-----

And if you find you have executed an innocent person, you then execute the lawyers involved. When is the last time you heard a lawyer say the word “Justice.” The reason they call it a Legal System rather than a Justice System is self evident.

Even the so-called ethics course is taught at a Law School by a lawyer. How could that be.

lolo
on a more serious note I have never understood why the libs always attack persons of faith. Having a moral compass is nothing to be ashamed for but then the libs seem incapable of understanding what that means. Society would truly benefit if more people clearly understood right vs wrong and conducted their lives in that manner

wildwest
I could write a thesis about why they attack. this space however is not long enough. How's the new grandbaby?

My experience around babies is limited but my wife being a nurse has seen hundreds. One question about wine. We are going camping in utah in another week. we are planning on taking a box of wine. Does that indicate a lack of class on our parts.

lolo
In fact, I do have my own faith. I just keep it out of my politics. When I swore to uphold our constitution many years ago, I knew that meant the ENTIRE Constitution, not just the parts I find conveniently fit into the world view I have developed for myself.

Unfortunately, that is what has happened to the Republican Party. A few opportunists (Rove, Cheney etc.) have divided us along religious lines by cherry picking this document. Do you think they are religious men? Hell no! They just saw what was left of the Dixiecrats and scooped them into this new make believe party at the expense of the core values of fiscal conservatism and market economics. These guys have taken the faithful for a ride in the interest of picking your pockets.

HANK, THE SCHOOLTEACHER
Let's see. Is "forebearers" something like "pallbearers"?

Great Shells! Thanks a lot! LOL

Now you've gone and done it!!!!!!!!

"You're a Ron Paul fan, right? Just a simple yes or no would suffice without the links and copying and pasting if you are."

Geeze, now there will be ronniepaul fanatics crawling all over this thread. In fact, maybe all 917 of them. Yikes! "-)

Then we'll have to scroll past all of them. Ugh!

Opine
Yes, I have studied it. I have my Masters in History. Actually, the problems that we face today began with the Brits and their involvement in WWI and their meddling with traditional tribal borders.

Read any number of Biographies on T.E.Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia. My personal favorite "Prince of our Disorder" by John E. Mack. "Seven Pillars of Wisdom" by Lawrence himself is also enlightening.

In a nutshell, the English made many promises to the Arabs in return for their help in defeating the Turks. Some kept and many broken, but the real point is they never promised DEMOCRACY.

Then after promising the Palestinians a country of their own, they came out with the Balfour Declaration which promised part of Palestine to European Jews (the Zionist movement). This is where it gets ugly. Those Palestinians who shed blood for the British effort against the Turks were angry. Whoops!

So after years of trying to keep the peace in Palestine between the Zionists and the native Palestinians the Hebrew underground terror cells began to attack the Brit forces trying to keep peace. In 1946 one such group, the Irgun, disguised themselves as Arabs and planted bombs in the King David Hotel. Later they detonated the bombs killing 91 people, (most of them staff of the the hotel: 28 British, 41 Arab, 17 Jewish, and 5 other;plus 45 people were injured).

Eventually the Brits, sensing an intractable, civil war, dropped out.

Who filled the vacuum? Good old Captain America.
We did it just a little more than a decade later with the French in Southeast Asia. And we are doing today.

I suggest reading McCullough's "Truman" for more details.

Similar stories can be found throughout the ME. All of them based on Colonialism's aftermath.

Dig a little deeper than the FOX "news" talking points.

1 We can continue to take the war to the enemy in Iraq.

Think 9/11 before you scoff."

No wonder people are jumping off the burning ship of republicanism so quickly. It is full of complete simpletons who have never read anything their minister didn't recommend.

How about options 3 and 4?

3.Get out of Iraq and stop supporting undemocratic regimes in the interest of a steady oil supply.

4.Get off of foreign oil.

For the half trillion we have spent in Iraq and Afghanistan, I'm pretty sure we could do that in less than a decade.

Not to mention we simply keep creating more Jihadi babies like the Russians did with their occupation of Afghanistan in the 80's. Are you even old enough to remember that war?

Try and dig a l

I actually had to read a little to discover these truths for myself. OOOOOH!

Nice one frigg!
What a brilliant pun.

I love how you geniuses simply "scroll past" those who disagree with you. Talk about cut and run!

got to go now guys.
Have fun agreeing with each other!

So Burt, umm --
Why were you ever a LIBERAL?

Just wondering, I guess I should just get your book.

Apart from being a gynecologist...
--
...what is it that starches the collective Townhall boxer shorts about Ron Paul, anyway?

I haven't spoken to the man for about twenty years, but he seemed no worse than any other guy on the surgical side. Not a golfer as I recall, so at least he didn't come across as the kind of fella who'd bore you out of your skull.

He told me that he'd gotten interested in politics after reading Ludwig von Mises' massive tome *Human Action* (over 900 pages in the edition I bought for myself 30 years ago), but that sort of "jumping in the deep end" approach is typical among surgeons.

(I'm just a GP; failing to find anything with a lot of Frank Netter illustrations, I sucked it up and started off with Henry Hazlitt's *The Conquest of Poverty*.)

He's the only one of the Republican candidates I've met in person, and the only one with policy statements anywhere near being congruent to the U.S. Constitution (and that includes Frank Thompson).

Moreover, I suspect he's just the kind of blood-on-the-shoes knife artist who scares the living hell out of Hillary and Obama and the Malpractice Lawyer simply because he's got precisely nothing in the way of personal failings or dirty dealings on which they can attack him.

Jeez, he even refuses to accept Medicare or Medicaid, so they can't dig through his nonexistent HCFA/CMS records to find any "profiting-on-the-suffering-of-others" stuff with which to hit him.

And unlike all those RINOs in the race, Ron is willing - hell, he's *salivating* at the prospect! - to discuss issues that Democrats and RINOs have "bipartisanly" agreed to treat as unmentionable.

Nominating anybody else is going to leave us with yet another 1996-type "Who Gives a Damn?" presidential election.

Putting Ron Paul up there at the presidential podium, though....

You think Mommie Dearest wants to confront *this* guy on health care issues? Har-de-har-har!

hank
I see why they fired you as a School Teacher.

You CUT&RUN Leftists can't seem to get it through your hard head that you can't just call a war over like you do a football game.

This war will NOT END without victory for one side or the other, regardless of whether or not it pleases whoosies like you.

Like it said before;
How this war started or how we entered it is irrelevant at this point.
Your ancient history and your insane compulsion to cast blame are also irrelevant.

The only relevant factor at this time IS TO KEEP THIS DAMNED WAR OFF AMERICAN SOIL!

Idiots like you seem to be trying your best to bring the war to America.

If you had ever seen the results of a prolonged war you would not wish that horror upon America.

Civilians ALWAYS are the majority of casualties during wartime due to lack of training and being unarmed.
People it our major cities with their silly anti-gun laws would be slaughtered like helpless sheep!

I am probably wasting my patience with you.
I doubt you are capable of learning anything other than your Liberal rhetoric!

SJ Doc: Yours is probably the one

logical, well written, reasonable post about ron paul that I've read on TH.

And, you did it without listing 13 urls to ron paul sites and columns. I'm impressed!!!

I DO like ron paul's Conservative stance on many issues.. small government, etc.

But, here's the thing! Ron paul shot himself in the foot, and fell off my radar (and I dare say fell off the radar of many) when, during the first Republican debate, said "...they attacked us because we were over there, we've been bombing Iraq for ten years...."

That told me that ron paul really doesn't have a grasp of foreign policy, and radical Islamics.

And, if you take a look at the poll numbers (not the staw polls) you'll see that the majority of Republicans agree... ron paul is off the radar.

hank: Failed to understand, yet again!

See, we've all read all the condescending, patronizing, ron paul posts... oh say, the first FIVE HUNDRED times they were posted.

No one needs to be beaten with the same rhetoric time and time and time again.... so, we now just scroll on by.... just like we're beginning to scroll by YOURS. :-)

MyOpine: You gonna make me read that one

aren't you??? :-)

Okay. I'll be right back!

MyOpine: Uh oh! I can hardly wait to

find out how the pauletts are going twist that earmark issue.

One thing is for sure, it'll be fun! :-)

Black Prince,
excellent post!

Leo, what an idiot you are! Unbelieveable!

If this is conservative
Then I am SO glad that I'm not one. What a desperately depraved way of looking at the world and our country. It's no wonder that the GOP is going down the drink, never to be the party in power ever again - and rightly so.

talisman: Did you have an intelligent

point to make????

I didn't think so.

anne
i think it was mark twain who once said the reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated

You have come to the right place for help.
We just need you to answer a few questions in our survey.
Then we will know how to help you.
We understand we are dealing with a mentally defective extroverted ego who flagellates himself by coming to TH to read articles he knows in advance he will not like and to insult anyone who does enjoy the articles.
To help you we need to know more about you.
We need to know if you also read books you don't like?
We need to know if you listen to radio shows you don't like?
We need to know if you watch TV programs because you don't like them?
Do you suffer through movies you don't like?
Do you take any medication for this strange disease?
Are any other members of your family afflicted with this same mental illness?
This illness must be related to the disease that causes Liberalism because I have never seen a Conservative behave in such a strange manner.

BLACK PRINCE
GREAT POST!

HANK
YOU'RE NO CONSERVATIVE....YOU'RE A LIBERATARIAN! MASTER IN HISTORY???? I DON'T THINK SO.

BURT
YOU SPOKE FOR ME. WELL SAID!

Anne, look at it this way
--
Ron Paul is correct in his..they attacked us because we were over there" statement to the extent that al-Qaeda has let it be known that their attacks against the USA began because of Saudi King Fahd's decision in August 1990 to reject bin Ladin's offer of his Islamic nutcase mujahideen (who had fought in Afghanistan) to defend Saudi Arabia against Saddam Hussein's forces invading Kuwait and instead opted to allow U.S. and allied forces to deploy on Saudi territory.

This enraged bin Laden, who ranted that the presence of foreign troops in the "land of the two mosques" (Mecca and Medina) profaned sacred soil.

The continued presence of U.S. military forces in and around the homeland of Wahhabism (modern Islam's most spectacularly whackjob strain of religious bigotry) keeps those flames fanned.

From my perspective, U.S. military intervention in the Persian Gulf from August 1990 has been a necessary evil, chiefly brought on by the failure of Bush Senior's State Department to have made it clear to Saddam beforehand that his invasion of Kuwait wasn't going to be received as a fait accompli.

Maybe Bush Senior should have allowed the contents of his secret National Security Directive 26 (2 October 1989) leak a little in the direction of Baghdad. Oh, well.

Dr. Paul holds - reasonably - that a change in overall U.S. foreign policy would help to keep situations like the present Islamic nutcase war on the United States from developing (thus making the "War on Terror" - what an Orwellian idiocy! - unnecessary).

If it looks to you as if Dr. Paul dropped a hemostat on his foot, bear in mind that it may seem an error to you only because none of the other Republican candidates for the nomination have the guts to pick up an instrument and get in there to clamp the bleeder.

And the hemorrhage is going to continue unless somebody does.

"BLACK PRINCE
GREAT POST!"

=========================

That was going to be my line :-) BP, I liked it!

Hank (many posts)
Before you open that school of yours (minus religion, of course) check out some Grammar and Spelling workbooks and study them well. Learn the difference between Affect and Effect for starters.

I am sorry you are so turned off to people of faith. Your anger seeps through every sentence you write...my thoughts are that someone really did you wrong in the past and you can't let go of the hurt. Just a guess, but, fella, you are full of pent-up anger!

P.S. Thank heavens you have left the classroom. The benefits of not having a teacher full of anger and hate will perhaps allow some students to develop in a more normal fashion.

Good luck in the future...and try to forgive yourself. Once you do, things will start turning around for you. It's amazing how others will begin to like you once you like yourself.

SCHOOLTEACHER HANK
That was no pun.

I'm with CapeConservative.

You need to get some remedial assistance with your English, spelling, punctuation, grammar, composition, imagination, etc. Inasmuch as you're a teacher (and I use the term loosely), you might have a good idea where you can get the help you need.

Good luck.

Reading itself can help -- especially the conservative writings of such authors as Burt Prelutsky and many others here on the "pages" of Townhall. You might try William F. Buckley.

Frigg, get a job
That all you got smart guy? I have bad punctuation?

Your ideas are as barren as your party. You clowns don't have a chance in '08. And talk about punctuation! Your writing is totally incoherent. At least I have the ABILITY to improve.

I am really sad for the party I used to call my own. It is peopled with cultist zombies who believe the earth REALLY is 6000 years old.

Maybe Romney will all take you back to his home planet where you can spank it to reruns of Ronald Reagan speeches after you lose the election.

cape
Spare me the "christian" routine. You guys are the biggest bunch of phonies. You deadbeats only care about yourselves.

Fortunately, it isn't I who need saving. I've already made peace with my God.

It is truly sad how insular you folks are.

hank
why are you a deadbeat if you carfe carfe of yourself. Why do the lib/dims promote programs that tell those receiving the benefits that they need take no personal responsibilities for their lives and no matter how many poor choices you make we will always rescue you. It is compasssionate to help those with mental or physical disorders that can't take care of their needs. It is quite another to enable able-bodied people to live of tax-payer largess merely to increase the voting base of the dims.

Very true Wild
Are you asking me to defend silly giveaway programs? I can't speak for the dems. I can say, however, that the republican party is every bit as bad. Some call them subsidies. I call it corporate welfare. If these corporations can't make it they need to be allowed to fail, end of story.

This IS market economics.

Grateful....Burt .... whatever
I know your version of history is based solely on what your minister tells you on Sunday, but when you get an advanced history degree you have to read a lot.

Hate to break it to you, but one can be conservative in philosophy and not be republican. I was once a republican. It was only after I discovered how it had become the party of the American Taliban that I had to break ranks.

I am an independent. We like to study issues and base our decisions on which candidate best represents our philosophy.

HANK, HANK, HANK
And the same back to your "forebearers."

Again, Hank, I state
you need to find peace WITHIN yourself to get rid of the intense anger you exhibit in each of your posts. It can literally make you sick! Your writings do not reflect one who has "made peace with God" as you state in the post below.

PS This isn't a "christian routine" nor am I a "phony" - try it, you just might find it to your liking (and well-being, to boot :-)

PPS Nowhere in my post did I mention caring only about "myself" - and I am definitely NOT a deadbeat!
