Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Tuesday was Earth Day, the highest holy day of the year for practitioners of shoddy journalism.

No subject, not even Barack Obama and the New Camelot, inspires reporters to drop any pretense of balance and objectivity like the Environment.  Green is the only way to go. Global Warming is likely to wreak havoc on your flowerbeds by the end of next week, it’s all the fault of that parasitic species, Industrial Man, and anybody who disagrees is either a hopeless simpleton or a paid agent of Big Oil.

Gaia can be a fickle goddess, as Earth Day celebrants in Canada discovered this weekend.  But the irony of an April blizzard driving an Earth Day celebration indoors, in this age of global warming, seems lost on reporters who have swallowed environmentalism hook, line and sinker.

For the past week the media have promoted Earth Day incessantly. Story after story tells us how to live green, how to eat green, how to change our lifestyles to save the planet.  ABC’s Good Morning America embarrassingly ran a countdown (only 58 hours, 37 minutes to Earth Day!) CMI Director Robert Knight has written a column detailing the recent excesses of media Gaia worship (see “My Big Fat Green Wedding and Other Media Nonsense” ).

The fun continued on Monday evening when NBC’s chief environmental affairs correspondent, Anne Thompson, took NBC Nightly News viewers on a field trip to Sweden.  Diabetics beware, this story is about to get downright syrupy.

NBC anchor Brian Williams’ introduction:

Have you ever noticed whenever you see those stories about which people are the most contented around the globe, whenever they profile the Swedes they always seem to be so happy and beautiful.  Now there’s another reason to be green with envy about the Swedes, we’re told they’re living green lives, showing kindness to the planet and saving a ton of energy in the process. Here is our chief environmental affairs correspondent, Anne Thompson.

Thompson:

Sweden’s official colors are blue and yellow but it lives green. From the citizens who can eat the fish from the waterways in Stockholm to King Carl XVI Gustaf, who rules the land and drives an ethanol-powered car.

Question then posed to Gustaf:  “Can the rest of the world learn from Sweden?”

Gustaf: “If you’re willing to, yes.”

This isn’t journalism, it’s advertising.  Free advertising, because the Swedish tourism industry didn’t pay a nickel for it.

Thompson:

A city of nearly 79,000, Växjö is a pioneer in green living, cutting carbon emissions by 30 percent per person in 15 years while still growing its economy. The crown jewel: its power plant that once burned oil.

We learn that Växjö’s power plant runs on wood waste, and that Sweden plans to free itself from imported oil by making synthetic gasoline out of wood.

Thompson:

Wood waste goes from truck to conveyor belt to boiler. They need 30 times more wood waste than oil but it only costs 1/5 the price and produces near zero carbon emissions.

At this point an attentive journalist might ask, “Thirty times more wood waste than oil?  How many trees does it take to generate as much energy as a barrel of oil?  Where will all that wood come from?  Is it realistic to think we can replace oil energy with wood waste energy on a massive scale?”

But raising questions about green energy production isn’t the purpose of this story. Not when uncomfortable questions might interfere with reducing carbon footprints, minimizing the so-called greenhouse effect and feeling good about ourselves.

To her credit, Thompson is willing to acknowledge that making a green omelet means breaking a few eggs.

Thompson:

Even here in Europe’s greenest city, some ways of life are much harder to change, like trying to convince people to ride on two wheels instead of four. The mayor thinks he knows how.

Mayor of Växjö:

You live with the whip and the carrot. The whip makes it more expensive to use fossil fuels and the carrot to make it inexpensive to use alternatives.

This environmental frenzy is getting downright dangerous.  A column in USA Today, “Might Our Religion Be Killing Us?,” suggests that religions are promoting overpopulation and thereby bringing environmental calamity. Going childless may become the new sacrament to the earth religion.

The media need to bring balance and objectivity back into reporting on environmental issues, before the politicians needlessly start cracking whips on us all.

High gasoline prices
High gasoline prices are enough of a deterent for me to be wasteful with fuel. Are the prices now artificially high? What is going on?

Whenever people start worshipping nature instead of the Creator babies are sacrificed.

Zero carbon emissions??????
How can you get energy from wood and not get CO and CO2 emissions?

From ME to you
If you just keep telling yourself that it is true it is....

From Me to you
That was going to be my question too. It's been a long time since my college chemistry, but the basic reaction is that you take some hydrocarbon (C-H compounds), combine theim with oxygen, and get H2O and CO2. It doesnt' matter if the hydrocarbon is coal, petroleum, or wood cellulose.

Maybe the Swedes just had their Parliament repeal the laws of chemistry. After all, they don't pay much attention to the laws of economics, either.

The Media
Actually, the fact that a reporter would say such complete nonsense confirms something I've been thinking for some time. Most reporters are either: (1) really stupid, (2) bald-faced liars, or (3) both.

Stop Global Warming in One Weekend
The earth rotates from west to east. If on a particular date and time, every human being in the world, all six billion of us that are able, were to begin running as fast as we could toward the east the rotation of the earth would increase from the squirrel cage effect. My associates who hang with Al Gore all assure me that the benefits of a faster rotation would be immense: first the day would become shorter, second the earth's orbit would increase in diameter vis a vis the sun, increasing the length of the year, and the net result would be less solar warming, which of course would offset man made global warming. Presto!
I plan to begin a lecture tour and would like TownHall readers to contribute $ 1.00 each toward a time share Bombardier Lear jet, and help me take the message to the masses. If Al Gore can do it so can I!

Good Points, everyone--
Sort of like looking at a world overtaken by the "chicken little syndrome"--the sky is falling...oh, and isn't the new buzzword "climate change"? I heard somewhere the world actually got a degree cooler last year...so now we need to panic about CHANGE...say, "CHANGE"--where have I heard that word before?

Why wood is better than oil
GG-AZ wonders why isn't oil like wood.

The idea is that the CO2 already in the system is not a danger. The trees take it in. We use it. More trees take it in.

But CO2 from buried carbon (oil in the ground) puts extra CO2 into the system.

(IT is totally unclear that it actually makes a difference. Long term data suggest that rising CO2 FOLLOW and don't lead global warming. I am not saying the Politically Correct Wisdom is correct, just saying that is why the King is proud.)
Old Doc J

I've asked before
and will ask again:

1) What is the ideal temperature supposed to be at any time, during any season, anywhere on Earth?

2) Who gets to decide?

I compared yesterday's ten-day weather forecast with today's. As of yesterday we're supposed to get rain on Sunday. Today, however, that has changed. No rain. For a long time.

Would the eco-idiots please do a rain dance so we don't all burn up out here?

HotPat your suggestion is priceless!! Made my day!! :)

DocJ et al
My biggest question about 'Global Warming' has always been: "Was Greenland named that as a joke??" The answer is NO!! The vikings found a very fertile, very green land and named it so. Villages were settled and many lived ther year round. The retreating ice is revealing a once vibrant culture and that the inhabitants had to leave the area in a relatively short period of time (100 yrs) because the climate changed. The winters became longer and eventually the ice and snow pack remained year around. Note: There were no SUV's or manufacturing smokestacks to 'pollute' the air with excess CO2. The amount of human activity at that time could not have produced such a drastic change in climate nor is it having any great affect now.

Xerxes
Legend has it that the Persian Emperor Xerxes sent his men out to whip the waves in order to stop the tide from coming in. The Gorons want us to repeat that folly.

We don't know how much of the warming in the last century was natural or how much was man-made. There is every reason to believe AT LEAST 2/3 was natural (probably more) and little reason to believe carbon emissions are the driving force behind climate change.

The Gorons don't want to investigate how much of the warming was natural and what caused it. They want us to dive head-first into reengineering our civilization to match their ideals. They don't really care whether these draconian measures actually stop or slow climate change; what matters is we live according to their ideals. The high priests, of course, won't have to follow the same standards as a poor, ignorant peons.

Hot Pat
Love your idea about speeding up rotation of the earth. In addition to contributions from TH readers you should get a generous gov grant for you great insight. Talk about thinking outside the box!

Carbon Offsets
Does anyone else think the idea of Carbon Offsets and credits sounds...well...stupid?
Every time I hear about this stuff on the news and people trying to reduce the amount of carbon they are emitting it just sounds...well...stupid. I find it amazing that people are falling for this. They were talking last night on the CBS Evening News (I like to watch it for a good laugh) and they had a report on people getting together to reduce their carbon footprints, etc. The groups are called CRAGS or Carbon Reduction Energy Groups or Action group if you want the acronym to work. Unbelievable. Here is a link:

Serious fighting of gobal warming
Start harvesting all old growth forests and replacing them with young trees that use more CO2.

Force everyone, except the elites, to live in high rise buildings within walking distance of their work.

Only allow the government to determine how hot or cold any residence can be.

All lights out at 10:00PM.

Restrict hours of electronic usage.

Now that is how you approach a climate emergency.

if you really
want to be 'Green',I mean really, do this:
Stop busing kids to school.
stop sports teams flying all over the world.
lights out at ten.
faze out small business, Walmarts distribution system is far more efficient.
no recharging cell phones.
leave superfund sites alone, it takes tons of energy to move dirt, and dredge rivers.
build a nuclear plant on every military base.
windmills in Teds backyard. etc etc etc....

Teachers, especially in the elementary
school level are great perpetrators of the religion of greenness and environmentalism. Only affluent nations can be so dedicated. Unfortunately, silliness goes with this dedication.
