Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

The surrealism of celebrity pop culture erupts when a major celebrity dies. The sudden, mysterious death of Michael Jackson caused a near-total eclipse of the real news. The cable-news channels blurred into 24-7 wailing walls for the so-called "King of Pop." Television ratings surged with a big ka-ching.

So much for the "news" business. On Friday, for example, just 24 hours after the death news broke, anchors like NBC's Brian Williams fit the "news" of Congress, the recession and Iran into a neat thimble of snippets so they could devote most of the newscast to continued mourning of the man with the glittery glove.

But what, exactly, is it that Michael Jackson brought to America that was so essential? An alien arriving from space would find him celebrated for dressing in shiny socks and dancing the "moonwalk." His music broke sales records and sets dance floors hopping, and his videos made people say, "I want my MTV." But all this happened a long time ago, when MTV was a music channel.

That is not how Michael Jackson dominated the pop-culture news scene for the past 15 years or so. What about Michael Jackson, the man? Was he, in the end, a good man? It seemed no one asked. Everyone wanted to celebrate the mystique of Jackson, but no one was comfortable focusing on the real Michael Jackson -- a wretched degenerate if ever there was one.

On NBC, reporter Janet Shamlian stayed vague about the "eccentricities" of Jackson: "In 1993, facing allegations of sexual abuse from a 13-year-old boy, he settled out of court. Soon after, he married Elvis's daughter Lisa Marie Presley in a union that would last less than two years. In 2005, criminal charges of sexually abusing a teenage boy, and more bizarre behavior. He would show up in court in pajama bottoms. In the end, the jury said he was innocent."

The coverage was an ocean wide -- and an inch deep.

Some hinted at a much darker celebrity inside the bubble. They reported Lisa Marie Presley wrote a letter. "I wanted to save him from the inevitable, which is what has just happened," Presley wrote. "I became very ill and emotionally / spiritually exhausted in my quest to save him from certain self-destructive behavior and from the awful vampires and leeches he would always manage to magnetize around him." This man was disturbed, addicted -- and perhaps to some, he was evil, not just eccentric. Whatever he was, he never seemed to grow up completely. Presley said Jackson feared he would die of an overdose, but he never seemed to take full responsibility for himself.

Farrah Fawcett died of cancer earlier in the same day. News of her death was swamped by his. To many boys of the 1970s, Farrah Fawcett was the "it" girl, the ultimate hottie. Her star burst with the debut of "Charlie's Angels" in 1976, and her poster in a red swimsuit and all her feathered blond hair and perfect teeth was a massive seller. Despite several very serious (and even critically acclaimed) dramatic turns, she never won a major award for acting.

Many feel she saved her best for last. In a documentary called "Farrah's Story," Fawcett took her embarrassing diagnosis of terminal anal cancer and made it a cause. The sweetheart with the perfect smile insisted on filming the horror of her illness even as she vomited through treatments. The lady with the world's most famous head of hair insisted her shaved head be displayed. All pride and vanity was put aside. What was left was the stark wreckage of a disease-riddled body. In the end, Farrah Fawcett never looked lovelier.

In the special, played on NBC, Farrah displays a disarming optimism based on faith in God: "There's no room for despair," she exclaimed. "The devil makes you sick, God can heal you. I believe in Him, His power and His infinite wisdom. I know I must do my work also, but I cannot do it without his help. But I must never forget how blessed I have been. He has given me gifts and happiness beyond any of my simple expectations."

In numerous scenes, she is seen wearing a rosary; she clutches it in rough moments. Going into treatment, you could hear her whisper her Our Fathers.

Farrah Fawcett did everything humanly possible to save her life, while a deadly disease systematically destroyed her body. Staring death in the face, she used her one remaining asset -- her celebrity -- to help others, even if it meant humiliating herself on national television.

In the end, all of Michael Jackson's manifold blessings were squandered while he systematically destroyed himself.

It's Because It Is Uniquely American...
Before I start, I have to get one thing out of the way: I'm more of a Prince fan than a Michael Jackson fan.

Having said that, however, I'll tell you why the death of Michael Jackson matters: It's because it is a uniquely American experience. If you want to tout American exceptionalism, you tout Michael Jackson because nobody else in the world except America could spawn a person that uniquely. I learned this as I had thought previously to myself, Why should I care about a self-destructive person who did nothing for humanity except entertain? Farrah Fawcett did much more for her cause then anything "Whacko-Jacko" did. While listening to the Phil Hendrie Show I learned why: It's because people wanted him to destroy himself. When predatory lawyers convince confused children and their parents on how to take a piece of this man because they resent that he had to work hard to get to where he was: the most popular music man in the world with some pretty savvy business acumen, as demonstrated by outbidding Paul McCartney for half the rights to the Beatles catalog. They wanted to destroy that by making him destroy himself since he was essentially a man-child who had never really grew up.

It sort of mirrors The Tragedy of Darth Vader (which is essentially the entire Star Wars film series): Anakin Skywalker was a nine-year-old boy who possessed great potential, but as he grew, he couldn't learn to let go of his childhood belongings (his mother, his first true love Padme) And because of his desire to keep everything the same, he let outside forces manipulate him, and ultimately, it transformed him into the monster he became, Darth Vader.

In a sense, Michael Jackson wore, in a way, a white Darth Vader mask hiding his true self because of the damage done to his body. What is saddest of all is that his children were not grown up and able to fully redeem him the way Luke Skywalker redeemed his father.

What Have We Become?
I remember reading somewhere an opinion that "this country went irrevocably wrong when Wonder Bread was invented". I had a moment like that the other evening when I turned on ABC Evening News only to hear Charles Gibbs say, "Tonight we will be devoting most of our program to the death of Michael Jackson." So I tried NBC, CNN, FOX, and MSNBC, and all I found was: Michael Jackson. Iran was still exploding, the health care debate was raging, and all the news people could come up with was Michael Jackson? So I gave up on TV and came to TH, where I found a post suggesting that Michael Jackson's face should be put on the twenty-dollar bill because "most of us don't care anything about dead presidents". You-all can keep Michael Jackson and Wonder Bread: I'm going to look for a better place.

The 1984 Grammy Awards.
On the night of Michael Jackson's (and more importantly in truth,) Quincy Jones' great accolades for the "Thriller" album, there was one serious 'discord' heard in the audience.

Wynton Marsalis, upon taking both the Classical and Jazz Grammy's that year, (a feat he'd accomplished the year before as well) said with a cutting intensity and disdain to Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones,
"I am proud to belong to a music form that is beyond enforced trends and bad taste."

How true it was. The jazz prodigy speaking of his great "Jazz" and casting down his gauntlet before Mr. Jackson, that dared not pick up that 'glove.'

Before anyone careen into oblivion over Mr. Jackson as an artist, think a moment of that Grammy Ceremony 24 years ago and Wynton Marsalis.

The media
has become just as demented as Michael Jackson was.

Jackson's circus was disgusting and so is the media speculation and feeding frenzy on his death.

@ Bozell:
We cannot determine what kind of a man he was because the vast majority of us did not know him personally. He was as cool as hell back in the day, and the music he made is still good. That is what counts, and it is his music that will be missed.
What kind of a "man" he was will be determined between him and his Creator.

Idolatry in its worst form...
I agree with Oakley that the media became (is) just as demented as Michael Jackson in its portrayal of him following his death. Yes, he had a significant impact on music...over fifteen year ago. But his career fizzled due to his eccentric life and perverse behavior.

Let the man go and PLEASE move on to another news story worthy of our time.

Breaking Story!!

Michael Jackson is still dead.

(From Glenn Beck)

Thank you, Brent...
...for once again revealing the shallow tendency of the media to focus on the train wrecks that pass for celebrities in America, while simultaneously ignoring the true heroes all around us.

So far, every post about this column has fallen right into the predictable pattern of discussing the death of a man who has already been obsessed over every day since he died, and in truth, his whole life.

Ms. Fawcett, who died the same day, is the true hero here, and the one deserving of our attention. She actually tried to make a difference for others, even in the face of terrible adversity.

The "king" of pop? Except for some of his music, what did he leave behind?

As far as some kind of example to anyone who wants to actually do something worthwhile with their life - not a thing.

Simple Amusement...

...for simple minds.

It's always baffled me why people idolize, to the point of stupidity, those in our society who are good at the most trivial things.

Michael Jackson made pretty sounds, A-Rod can hit a small ball with a bat, 7'1" Wilt Chamberlain could put a large ball into a basket situated ten feet off the ground, OJ Simpson was good at carrying an odd-shaped ball down a football field and David Letterman can elicit laughter by making stupid, sarcastic statements to audiences full of morons. They're paid stunning amounts of money for doing things that in the great scheme of things amount to diddly-squat. Their talents do absolutely nothing to improve the human condition. They simply distract from it.

Not only are people like these idolized, but are forgiven deeds which a carpenter or nurse would be villified, prosecuted and jailed.

Focus of the News that day
I had to turn off the news that day. I don't even have TV, but I have satellite radio. Even Fox news ignored the fact that the US House of Representatives (I use the term loosely), was passing the biggest tax ever, in spite of the fact that people have been and are on this fourth of July, giving up their BBQ's in favor of another tea party to protest high taxes.
I'm afraid that even Fox has been seduced by the dark side. Hmmm, do you suppose someone maybe had a hand in Jocko's demise??? You know, just to divert our focus as a nation???

Just How I feel About MJ
I have the same feelings. He was a great performer but had serious issues.

http://www.onebigdog.net/michael-jackson-anti-semite-child- molester/

It's OVER!!
MJ's death sold a lot of newspapers and the TV networks,(The main ones) were busy hiding the corruption that BHO and the anti-Americans in Congress were carrying out to destroy this nation.
MJ. contributed nothing to real music and dance except to distort it in sensual and disgusting ways.
The real crisis in his life was that he had no relationship with Jesus Christ else he wouldn't have acted like he did.

Song -the world will seem a better place
Bozo's writing: "The sudden, mysterious death of Michael Jackson.." Next: "Jackson -- a wretched degenerate if ever there was one.." The first item - sudden and mysterious - was not. Most ordinary people could easily guess MJ was a nut and die at his own hand. What was so puzzling about it? Mysterious??? The second quote - wretched degenerate - on target but that was most of his latter life. Pajamas to court - and was not thrown into jail? Whoops, sorry judge, I got up late and my umbrella was temporarily misplaced. But I kinda hurried in to the court after I had to wave to my fans while on top of my auto - now judge, can we get on with this show?

When?
"Lilly" writes, "You-all can keep Michael Jackson and Wonder Bread: I'm going to look for a better place." Many have been waiting for this!!!!!

Not a Jackson fan, but...
I have no interest in Michael Jackson's music; my musical tastes lie elsewhere (I lost interest in current-day pop music starting right around the time Jackson became a superstar). And I agree that the news emphasis on his death is vastly overblown at the expense of more important topics.

On the other hand, I think the censorious Mr. Bozell's conclusion that Jackson was "a wretched degenerate if there ever was one" may be too harsh. In particular, I think it is inappropriate to automatically assume Jackson was in fact guilty of sexual abuse charges of which he was acquitted, or which were never pursued to a conviction. (Does Bozell also think it is appropriate for leftists to presume George W. Bush guilty of "war crimes" of which he has never been convicted?)

From what I heard of the events surrounding the Jackson sexual-abuse cases, it seems credible to me that his behavior with children, such as having them in his bed overnight, had to do with wanting to recapture a normal childhood he never had, and wanting to pretend he was a child himself, rather than wanting to sexually exploit children. And that his accusers may have wanted to exploit the situation for financial gain. At best, this means that Jackson was sadly confused and stunted in his development as an adult person and that he had very poor judgment in putting himself repeatedly in a suspicious position. At worst, maybe he *was* guilty of sex abuse. But if the rule "never speak ill of the dead" doesn't apply, at least the rule "innocent until proven guilty" should.

Incredibly talented...
Incredibly flawed, and I fear that he wasn't guilty of sexually abusing children, the way O.J. wasn't guilty of murder. He stands now, before his Maker for the final judgment, and we'll never hear the verdict.

All that said, the wall to wall coverage of his passing was absurd, but it speaks volumes about us, as seen by the media. Congress was busily playing games with legislation that will alter all American life (and taxes) as we know it, while we watched helicopter shots of a hospital parking lot.

We deserved better.

What is pathetic
is how people will contort facts in an attempt to make sin into anything else. If you don't tell someone that what they are doing is wrong(sin) then how will they ever confess, repent and be made whole? Excusing someone else does not exonerate self.

What I don't understand is why
networks devoted to news will devote whole days to one single story. The preceding week, whole days were devoted to the people in the streets in Iran, also as if nothing else was going on in the world. Granted, that was a very important story, but was it the only one?

Then, to devote whole days to Michael Jackson?

I thought it was a great misfortune for the families of Farrah Fawcett and Ed McMahon that their loved ones died in the same week as Michael Jackson. Frankly, perhaps because I never spent a dime to obtain any of Michael's music, I was rather surprised at the total ecliple his death presented the other two deaths.

I never had any animosity regarding him, and I don't know whether he was degenerate or merely immature, but I always felt a bit of pity toward him, despite his millions and the allegations against him, especially after his last facial surgery.

celebrity fascination
it remains truly pathetic how many losers get caught up in the daily goings on of the vapid celebrity culture that exists in this country.

Perhaps this is another reason why the msm is held is such disregard. Rather than focusing on events that actually effect real people they instead bore the country with the empty lives of talentless mega millionaires

But what is most telling about these celebrity parasites is their constant need for adoration from the public and the never ending award ceremonies where they tell each other how important they are.

While bubba infested the white house there was a steady stream of hollyweird types invading the lincoln bedroom. At that point it was almost difficult to understand which parasites was sucking life out of the other but most likely bubba wanted the hollyweird types as much as they wanted him.

However with flap ears in the white house, their is no stream of hollyweird types making a pilgramage to the white house.

This time around we are stuck with a president so full of himself than no one else is needed to fill the galxay he infests.

But what is telling, other white celebrities have recently died as well as other americans defending this country and flap ears can only find enough time to send a note to the jackson's. No doubt the note also included a signed phote of the messiah himself. Afterall even his presence means more than little michael and his passing.

But then again for many of us, jackson like flap ears means very little to us and the lives we live.

While jackson was a walking freak show, flap ears is a walking disaster that unfortunately is doing more damage to the country than watching people try to imitate the moonwalk

pop culture
...pop culture the risk that you take when trading the god of the bible for the god of the stage...sleep well

MJ's music
Whenever I hear or think of Michael's music, I thankfully cannot remember any of the words. It always seems to morph into one of Weird Al's spoofs. Thank God I can't think of the original lyrics!

Mysterious Death?
Michael Jackson took too many pills. No mystery about that

Oh the conservatives alive now?
As Bozell writes, every word he writes, in essence is self-condemnationl, while conservatives did do nothing to counter and basically, not by government intervention, but by example do it.

No question, an may I suggest, that this garbage was also enjoyed by conservatives. As for myself, I never spend a minute watiching it and neither did I spent a penny for it. Can every other Conservative do the same and condemn it at the same time?

Michael Jackson and..
Farrah Fawcett. Beauty and the beast. Guess which is which?

Bozell is a Wretched Degenerate
Bozell, operative words are important. They help distinguish opinion from fact. You don't seem able to make that distinction.

I am not great fan of Michael Jackson, so I'm not coming from that angle. I like some of his stuff, don't like some, and prefer the Jackson 5 to Michael Jackson.

Having said that, I will defend him from judgmental idiots like you. It is one thing to say you THINK he's a degenerate. It's quite another to state it as fact.

I think he was weird. The operative word is "think". But judgmental idiots like you take it a step further and declare it as fact. Because Jackson chose to do things that you consider out of the ordinary, you've decided he's a degenerate.

At this point it's necessary to remind you that he was AQUITTED of child molestation charges. In other words, his accusers brought all their evidence to bear, and a jury found it unconvincing. He was not a child molester. He was accused, and found innocent. That is a fact. Can you understand that? Or does the US justice system only count when you agree with it?

However, since you're throwing labels around, Bozell, and ignoring facts, I suppose I'm entitle to do the same. Therefore:

Brent Bozell is a filthy, child molesting degenerate. He is also a liar, a thief, and a homosexual. He eats human flesh, and is unfit to live on the planet. He's a space alien, birthed in a test tube.

There. Facts are facts.

WHAT DID MJ LEAVE BEHIND?
Three damaged children and a family fighting over his money and debts. So, he has left more societal wreckage behind him. Hardly worth mythologizing.

A Stark Contrast
I will never remember Farrah as anything but beautiful. In the end, her beauty truly showed it was from the inside out. Michael Jackson is another matter entirely. He started out lovely in his young life, but ended up a freak show. Still, the death of both is a tragedy for their respective families and I wish them privacy during their time of grief.

Jackson coverage
This is just over the top. We still have Ted Kennedy and Elizebeth Taylor to go. Both drug abusers and one a killer. We are a country of "sick Puppies". I'm just watching the food channel. I've had it. I'm not even watching Fox at this time.

In MHO I compare this to
Al Gore being awarded the Nobel Peace instead of the courageous Irena Sendler of Poland.

I recently watched Jaywalking which is Jay Leno's version of asking questions of people he picks at random on the street. Although humorous it is sadly also a display of total ignorance. One guy is asked what countries border the US, and he replies with Australia...when that doesn't work he comes back with Hawaii...

and we wonder how a freshman senator became our Monarch!

Michael Jackson
believed in God too.

LeftUSA NY
Yes, and OJ was AQUITTED also and we all know he is innocent!

It started long ago...
I was talking to my mom last night and she said "When Elvis died they did the same thing". I thought about that for awhile and then said "No I don't think so." Yes they did go overboard when Elvis died, but nothing like this. The change has happened slowly at first and has picked up steam over the years. Surely, celebrity journalism has always existed and over the top stories have as well. But now there has been at first a "blending" and now an absolute take over of hard news with celebrity stories. Our president is a celebrity and our newscasters are celebrities and our pastors are celebrities and this creates huge problems. Celebrities by nature "need" to keep in the public eye- need to be seen and heard and need to be in the limelight no matter what- its their life blood. This of course means the first thing to be cheapened is of course "truth". Truth is secondary to celebrity and fame. Even money can take a back seat at times to fame. When young people have been asked in surveys what they would prefer most- they all say FAME. This is not only sad, but dangerous because truth and humility and virtue die as a result and hubris and conceit and self interest overtakes the soul and society pays a steep price. It started years ago and we are seeing the reaping of what our society has sowed.

Fairness Man
So you're saying you KNOW MJ was guilty?

With guys like you around, why do we bother with trials and courts? Think of the money we could save.

You sure you're name is Fairness Man, and not Ahmadinejad?

LeftUSA
Oh yeah, that out of court settlement with the boy in '93 shows Jackson was innocent!? You know I agree with you to a point- I don't know if Jackson was a child molester or not- but I also seriously doubt the veracity of our judicial system- what with 1 year prison sentences and such coming down against convicted molesters of 5 year olds and younger. So while I will not be Jackson's judge- (there is a JUDGE he is in contact with now) I certainly won't utilize the present American judicial system as an arbiter of truth and justice- it just doesn't have the track record lately. Plus with $ and prestige and dream teams- what are they arguing? Truth or technicalities of the law?!

With whom would you share a beer?
Farah.

LeftUSA
I think you make some legitimate points. But I still have little faith in the judicial system. You are right about not making rash comments such as Bozell made- that really is out of place- without solid evidence. By looking at his patterns I certainly wouldn't put my own kids around him though. But overall I think you are correct.

Jackson's "music"
Yes, Michael Jackson was a child-molesting pervert. That is my judgment, not a known fact. If you make another judgment, I judge you to be a blithering idiot.

But I tire of those who praise his "music." The reality is that Michael Jackson, along with Madonna, destroyed American pop music. Before Jackson, American pop music was largely (not totally) the province of male singers. I cannot recall a single male superstar in American pop music since Jackson's heyday -- except those that are older than Jackson.

Country & Western continues to crank out stars; pop music is dead. Why? Because Jackson and Madonna both hit on the same formula at the same time: you don't have to be able to sing; just wiggle and act perverted on stage and on video, and you can sell a lot of CD's and concert tickets. Before Madonna, being good-looking was important to female singers, but being able to sing mattered, too (think Linda Ronstadt, for example). Madonna couldn't sing a lick, but did a good striptease and pranced around quite well in underwear. After Madonna, we don't get good female singers; we get "wigglers" like the pathetic Britney Spears.

Similarly, after Michael Jackson, we no longer have male superstar singers producing pop music. He became the biggest star of his generation by wiggling and grabbing his crotch on stage. People with real singing voices were pushed aside -- permanently.

Michael Jackson was a drug-addled pervert in his private life and ruined pop music in his public life. Yuck.

LeftUSA NY
Who would really care what you think. Your online name tells all the good TH folks everyting they need to know about you and where you are coming from.

Georgann
You've never been a conservative or a Republican in your life.

It's the oldest and most transparent trick in the book - a flaming liberal coming on here or calling talk radio and trying to pretend that they are conservatives.

Get real.

Every post....
...but two so far have droned on about the degenerate drug addicted 'king' of pop, obsessing over him to the point of the absurd.

To the two posters who graciously mentioned Farah Fawcett, a way, way better human being than MJ could've ever hoped to be - thank you.
This is what Brent's column was essentially about - America's obsession with celebrity train wrecks, while we're basically silent and apathetic about noble and decent people who tried to make a difference for good.

There is a spiritual component to this phenomenon, and it doesn't bode well for America's future.

Nothing new under
the sun. Go look at the Valentino funeral, Monroe, James Dean.

Whale--you are truly an idiot
"I cannot recall a single male superstar in American pop music since Jackson's heyday -- except those that are older than Jackson."

Really? Justin Timberlake? Billie Joe Armstrong? Will.I.Am? LL Cool Jay? Usher? Prince? Kanye West? John Legend? Josh Groban? Marc Anthony? Ricky Martin? Springsteen? Jon Bon Jovi? Steven Perry? Sammy Hagar and/or David Lee Roth? Steven Tyler? Michael Stipe? Kurt Cobain? Eddie Vetter? Beck? Moby? Jack White? Jay Z? Tupac? R Kelly?

Georgann
If you ever actually were a conservative, I'd like to thank you for jumping ship and going leftist.

You've managed to raise the average IQ of both sides.

coldplaylover
I admit that whale's comment was somewhat confusing, but most of the people you mentioned aren't known for "pop", but rather, rap, hip hop, or rock.

Pop is an entirely different genre, and it's the genre MJ was in.

And Sammy Hagar? He's been on the scene since the days of Montrose, and predates virtually everyone you referred to......

ann fan
'pop' is Kenny G or Neil Diamond or Barry Manilow or Celine Dion, not Michael Jackson. Prince and Justin are huge superstars in the Jackson mold. Usher and Kanye and Legend and Groban and Anthony and Ricky Martin are all Jackson types of performers. As are the others. Jackson was already a has been, more a celeb like Liza or Liz Taylor than an actual performer. He committed suicide by pills because he knew he'd never make it thru to the concerts, and he didn't want to go out an even bigger failure.

But to claim that he's the last pop superstar is nonsense. Not surprising that TH people have no idea what popular music is.

annfan
Wrong. "Pop" is a generalization. Rock, Hip Hop, rap, etc, are subsets of Pop.

And Whale was just plain wildly wrong. That list could be a lot longer

Ho hum,

[I, LeftUSA,] remind you that he was AQUITTED of child molestation charges. In other words, his accusers brought all their evidence to bear, a jury found it unconvincing. He was not a child molester. He was accused, and found innocent. That is a fact. Can you understand that?"

Please, Mudhen. He settled out of court with his first victim. He parted with a king's ransom, keeping out of JAIL. I say he dodged a molestor's bullet. Not that I give a hoot.

BTW; Jackson was a hyped personality of dubious worth for a musician. You might call him an entertainer; Winton Marsalis truly is a great musician. Without any hype.

With all the revenue and notoriety; aided by technology they didn't even imagine in the 1920's; the unrivaled STAR of our 20th century was Al Jolson. He dominated radio, movies, music, Broadway stage and all the world of entertainment. His music still sells today! Jackson will never approach such star power.

When Valentino died; also suddenly, the entire world mourned! Sorry to go back in ancient history, but all this is FACTS. And our publicity mills and TV weren't even locked and loaded! Jackson benefited by modern technology and HYPE. I actually feel sorry for him; he died a ruined man.

tgwWhale, let it all hang out
I think tgwWhale is quite right in everything he says of MJ, Madonna, that oddball bunch. Their sh!t has about killed popular music.

You can get entertainment out of YouTube better than that class of idiocy.

I've seen better singing by James Brown there; and other, infinitely classier music. Yesterday YouTube videos of Birgit Nilssen singing Salome! HARD TO BELIEVE!!!

Flamenco dancer Eva La Yerba Buena-- stupendous; Jackson's "moonwalk" is tame by comparison!

ONE guy on You Tube who's right there in Jackson's level of entertainer is Emo Philips. Check Emo on YouTube! He's a scream!

I have the suspicion Michael was hoping to be a ringer for Emo, getting all that bleaching & plastic surgery. Don't believe me? Check!

Dread
Jackson paid no one a king's ransom. $15 million when you are worth $500,000 million or more is chump change. I bet a bunch came from his homeowner's or umbrella policy too. Those parents were pimps if they settled and Jackson did anything to their kid. The DA was incompetent, or he had no evidence, either time. And the first case was a civil one, not criminal.

It is Wynton Marsalis, btw. And he has lots of hype...he's everywhere. He even put on a class in jazz with his family members at the WH recently. He's a superstar.

And you're trying to diminish Jackson's talent. Typical TH. You hate modernity and you refer to Al Jolson.

coldplay as a lover?

"Jackson paid no one a king's ransom. $15 million when you are worth $500,000 million or more is chump change."

OK. Next time you're on the hot seat for child molestation; find $15 million and stay out of the pokey.

As for talent; sure. Jackson had enough for one ridiculous punk. He rode in limos. But what was he? A sickie!

Al Jolson, FYI, had more talent than any other man alive, WITHOUT any help from whole teams of marketing and publicity. Jackson became what he was by BUYING fame.

Nobody will remember him in 25 years. EXCEPT for laying with boys. That's how he'll live in memory.

You recall John Wayne Gacy, don't you? On account of what? Being a p e r v e? That's all. People don't forget things like that.

Michael Jackson--American Success Story
He was born a poor black boy and died a rich white woman.

drednaught
Before I came on this thread, how did I know it would be liberals who were celebrating this bizarre, drug addled pedophiles sorry, destructive life? I must be psychic.

Pass the Jesus Juice
Gawd, there is nothing as insufferable as people who don't know squat about music and its evolution acting like they KNOW music just because they happen to like mindless pablum, with catchy hooks and nonsensical words (usually written by someone else) - especially while incorporating heavily choreographed professional dancers into their lip-syncing videos. Oh, and when, pray tell, did "rock" become a subset of "pop"? And the poster whose name says it all - coldplaylover - I feel sorry for you that you have to consider that minimal talent list of people, "superstars". You have truly led a sheltered and inexperienced life and in several years will probably look back at such comments and be embarrassed.

Michael Jackson
The day before the destructive Cap & Trade Bill passed the House, what did the tv news concentrate on? Michael Jackson's untimely death! Hours and hours of not news, just rehashing the same stuff.

Even FOX News shows were taken off the air and replaced by Michael's passing. I could not believe the only channel I can depend on for fair and balance news thought that was more important than a bill that will decimate the middle class if it passes.

Let's face it,folks. It is all about entertainment now. Those who want to be entertained win the day. Very soon now, they will see the real world, thanks to our dictator in the White House.

Thank you, Captain Irrelevant. You may now go back to the land of Grandiosa, from whence you came.

"pop" music
Those who criticize my claim that there are no more male superstars in pop music (1) forget that people like Springsteen are older than MJ -- and I qualified my claim by excluding those older stars; (2) rap is not pop music -- in fact, it is not music at all, but is doggerel verse and nothing more; (3) R&B is not "pop" music, either, at least in the normal usage of the word (and similarly, country & western isn't "pop," either); (4) Justin Timberlake is not a superstar, but a joke. Elvis was a superstar; the Beatles were superstars; Frank Sinatra was a superstar. And Michael Jackson was a superstar. Justin Timberlake? Get real.

Your definition of "superstar" is so loose that just about every idiot with a best-selling CD counts as a superstar.

To be a superstar, you pretty much have to get as much press as Britney Spears, and do it over a quite long period of time. And I can't stand Britney; but she is a "superstar." In other words -- EVERYONE knew who Michael Jackson was, just as everyone knows who Britney is. That's the definition of "superstar."

What's worth talking about?
The media's incessent "coverage" of Michael Jackson's death is so overdone that the press makes a mockery of itself. To the detriment of other news reporting, the Jackson overload is filled with worthless information that a retional person cannot really care about. But the media seems to think it is important..The only reason it gives us such a full court press on Michael Jackson is to make money. The more we watch and read about Michael Jackson's death, the higher fees they get from advertisers. But in the end is it really worth taling about? Nah! Now you know.

Excellen, Mr. Bozell
5 rating.

Why do so many chose to ignore or minimize the sick, perverted aspects of this twisted little man, who USED to be the biggest pop star in the world?

Must be Obama voters, all of whom have an aversion for reality.

Two little caveats are needed to better your definition of what it means to be a "superstar"...

1.) People, the VAST majority of people, must like you personally. Many may not like you, but the foolish majority MUST fawn over you with adoring love (youth & adults). Elvis, Michael Jackson, the Beatles, and Frank Sinatra all fit. However, Britney Spears does not. Spears is not adored by adults, nor is she loved by a majority of the folks.

2.) The MUSIC of a true "Superstar" must also be respected by the majority of the folks and by people who know music (even if they themselves are not big fans of said star)! Again, Elvis, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Frank Sinatra all qualify here. However, again, Britney Spears does not. Her music is an utter joke and it was her sexy school girl act that allowed her career to take flight. Serious musicians would scoff at the notion of Britney being anything more than a vagina shot on the cover of a popular tabloid. Her music is weak enough to toss her in with Timberlake. They are indeed "stars", but they are definitely NOT "superstars" IMO.

Give me Bach,
I am sure MJ's music won't matter a whit in another two hundred years. That said, I am very sorry for the fact he wasted his tremendous gifts-and they were granted to an extraordinary degree. I do like some of his stuff, though have never seen anything but bits of his vids.

What is really scary is that the 'devoted' fans I saw on TV are also eligible to vote! :(

Hero Worship
If he had made a run for president,he would have received millions of votes. Probably many of the same who voted for Obama would have voted for him.

This is the problem today, illiterate, naive and uninformed non-taxpayers, voting. There should be some standards to measure before a person votes. If you are a government parasite, you have no business voting.

This man could have been a inspiration for something besides his musical talent.Instead he led many astray with his crotch-grabbing and his relationship with young boys, among other negatives.

Of Course Coverage of Jackson Was Huge
The Media should have spent more time covering Congress, the recession and Iran? Covering what exactly? We've been 'talking' about Iran for 30 years, so we need to hear about it some more? We need to hear the latest thing Obama has to say about Iran, when he is not going to actually say anything?

Or perhaps we needed to hear more about the recession -- of which we haven't shut-up about for the last year?

I was actually glad to see all the Jackson reporting. I think it was a well deserved break from having to see Barrack Obama's face on TV every 3 1/2 minutes of the day, or hearing someone blabbering-on about the "economy". The news coverage is total BS. But at least with the Jackson coverage, I got to enjoy that circus and side-show.

Conspiracy
There has been a sudden rash of celebrity deaths, jackson, farrah, ed mcmahon, billy mays, travalinna, karl malden especially at a time of great importance as the government debates health care......could it all be a distraction as the government seeks to take over a huge portion of the US economy???????

Ratings...
Even I can't stop watching any story about Michael Jackson; so the TV networks are having a fiesta with their high ratings because people just can't get enough. It was very UNEXPECTED.

n, whatsamatter you?

N--

You left out Kung Fu Carradine, who got himself strung up in some kind of dominator harness and ball-breaker love-knots. Goodbye, Guru.

He's no Michael Jackson, but so what?
