Notre Dame Pacifier?

Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

President Obama came to the campus of Notre Dame armed with all his usual arrogance. Despite his radical abortion record -- which includes championing a policy in Illinois wherein aborted babies who manage to survive are tossed aside, to die -- he posed as the national moderator of "common ground." And he did it by plugging a yellowed old tale from his campaign memoir "The Audacity of Hope." All he left out were the words "Order now on Amazon.com. Just $16.50 in hardcover."

Obama is loaded with nothing more than audacity. His speech no doubt pleased liberals, who love to pretend they're for all the mushy inclusiveness Obama pretended to favor -- "Open hearts, open minds, fair-minded words." This from the politician who spent 20 years listening to the rantings and ravings of Jeremiah Wright? This from the politician who unleashed more than 100,000 negative ads on John McCain?

Not unexpectedly, the networks embraced Obama's pose as the pragmatic pacifier of the "culture wars." On Sunday night, ABC anchor Dan Harris proclaimed: "Today President Obama walked right into the heart of the abortion debate and essentially told both sides to lower the volume." NBC anchor Lester Holt framed the controversy as "President Obama today stepped squarely into the middle of what may be this country's deepest cultural, religious and political divide."

It's outrageous enough to give Obama credit for showing his face at Notre Dame. He certainly wasn't going to stop campaigning for the votes of liberal Catholics. He saw the Notre Dame speech as an opportunity to confuse the public about his abortion extremism on the cusp of his first Supreme Court nomination, sure to be on the radical left.

But it's not just outrageous, it's also ridiculous to place Obama anywhere near the "middle" of the abortion debate. His actual record and his policies as president belie any notion of Obama disappointing the abortion lobby in any way.

In the first 100 days, Obama delighted people like Cecile Richards, the head of the Planned Parenthood abortion empire. On the Huffington Post, Richards announced there were "champagne corks popping" over Team Obama's early record, adding, "there is no way to overstate the revolutionary change that is taking place."

Her list included how Obama lifted the "global gag rule" to allow aid to international abortion advocates, "restored affordable birth control for women and girls," supported the stripping of funds for abstinence-based sex education, and lifted any restriction on the over-the-counter sale of Plan B "emergency contraception" for "women 17 years and older." He also placed fierce, feminist, in-your-face favorites in the important abortion positions, like Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State and Kathleen Sebelius as Secretary of Health and Human Services. That's not to mention the pro-abortion extremists appointed in the sub-cabinet ranks.

Continuing the outrage, we are told that Obama's position is one of "humility." In a bizarre column headlined "Conciliatory Fighting Words," Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne insisted Obama's opponents want to "reignite" the culture wars and "see theological arguments as leading to certainty. He opted for humility."

Abortion advocates like Richards have hardly been humble in their ongoing campaign to increase the availability and government funding of abortions. They've never shown a lack of moral certitude, either, even as they lie on government documents to hide their intentions as their nasty clinics are built. Their war for "choice" and profit has never needed to be "reignited."

Obama infamously bowed before Planned Parenthood as a presidential candidate and promised to sign the "Freedom of Choice Act" -- a radical bill that would crush every state regulation that would attempt to restrain untrammeled abortion. Only nine percent of Americans support this hideous venture. How on earth can Obama be both an advocate of FOCA and the man calling for "common ground"? He can't. But his pliant press corps doesn't dare to point out the schizophrenia of his rhetoric and his record.

His forthcoming Supreme Court nominee inevitably will support the infallibility of Roe vs. Wade, which in itself was not a "common ground" initiative, but a top-down federal order used to scrap every state's ban on abortions. There was certainly no judicial humility in Roe: The liberal justices acted like legislators without shame, and imposed their will with great haughtiness.

Obama's liberal arrogance extended to suggesting to American Catholics that the real Catholic tradition is to serve as those "common ground" moderators, to show theological "humility" and work together on common social problems. He came to Notre Dame not simply to speak, but to attempt to help liberals redefine Catholic teaching and Catholic tradition. That's a pretty audacious position for a man to take when he never dared to object to or redefine the sulfurous gospel of Jeremiah Wright in 20 years in the pews.

When it comes to abortion
Obama shows that evil does exist. This man has been an advocate of the most extreme forms of abortion,up to including infanticide. (Opposing the infants born alive act.) He is a monster.
I offer a challenge to the libs that are sure to spew their anti-child filth here in the coming hours. You all say you are against torture, but you want us to be able to get info to protect our country. Let's use the methods used to achieve a partial birth abortion on the terrorists. You have no problem with those procedures. We can even call it America's "right to choose" security over terror.

a relevant difference
An anlysis of whether Obama's speech at Notre Dame was a humble approach to the issue of abortion would require actually bringing out the content of that speech. E.J. Dionne, who is perhaps the best op-ed writer around, did such an analysis of the speech. Bozell, who is not interested in things like arguments and telling the truth, did not. I expect many people might prefer the Bozell approach anyway.

What does Bozell gain by lying about Obama's position in Illinois? I suppose there might be 10% of the country driven so irrational by the abortion debate that they accept Bozell's characterization. But don't arguments have to appeal to more than the rabid 10% who already agreed with one going in.

To everyone else, the first paragraph above would seem to be more like Bozell wearing a clown nose while giving a speech.

Correction
When a vote came up in the Illinois Senate on a law making it illegal to kill the live-born product of an abortion, Obama voted no. His reason for this vote has been widely published and, among Conservatives, consistently ignored and distorted. Obama voted NO because we already have a law against killing live-born infants, and, by policy, he does not vote to duplicate a law already on the books.

By that measure, if the next day a law had come up prohibiting UPS delivery couriers from murdering FEDEX delivery couriers, presumably he would have voted against that one too since we already have a law that keeps one adult from murdering another. But no doubt then Conservatives would have been bleating "Obama wants delivery couriers dead! What a monster!"

You people think in National Enquirer headlines.

So, ignoring the facts about Obama's vote, Conservatives continue to talk about infants being "tossed aside" and "thrown into a dumpster" and "left to cry in a cold laundry room" and "abandoned to die alone".

Obama and Conciliation
So Obama is the great conciliator and will bring us all together on abortion-- what exactly has he done to cause anyone to believe him.
Would the liberal posters here name one law he has voted on that would limit abortion in any way whatsoever? Would they like to suggest what parts of the pro-'choice' doctrine they would give up to compromise with people who wish to restrict abortion in any way? No, the pro-abortion lobby has fought even the smallest restriction on abortion, right down to full-birth abortions, third-trimester abortions, parental notification, and every other restriction. They have never compromised. So why should we believe they wish to do so now?

lilly
"Obama voted NO because we already have a law against killing live-born infants, and, by policy, he does not vote to duplicate a law already on the books." Rather disingenuous, aren't you! This was not a law about killing live-born infants, but neglecting them to death. This law required that all steps be taken to preserve the life of an aborted infant born alive. It's a more than a little bit different-- it's totally different. Just for giggles, let's say you're correct. Obama is a political genius, or so say his acolytes. Surely he must have foreseen how this vote would be interpreted, so it would have been politically wise in the very least to make this meaningless vote to avoid the accusation we make. No, he voted against this instead of his usual 'present' because he believed it was bad for the pro-abortion cause. Or is he a political idiot? That's the alternative reading.

lilly
I'm not sure what you are talking about in your 3:54 p.m. post, but if you carefully read the Illinois legislative record, you will see that you are wrong.

At the time, Obama, in his own words, did not talk about another law on the books. He voted "no" because the term "pre-viable fetus" was not defined to his liking.

He also was concerned about possible lawsuits against abortion doctors.

Speaking of National Enquirer headlines, you probably need to quit reading them.

lilly and Lon
1. If abortion is a right, and there is nothing wrong with it, then why does President Obama want to make it "rare"?

2. If there IS something wrong with abortion and we want to make it "rare," then why would the President support something he feels is wrong?

lilly/Lon
If you think Obama's stance on abortion is somwhere in the middle then there should be plenty of action and proof to present in support of that.

I suppose you are under the impression as well that no political leader would ever come up with a spin on their voting record to rationalize on why they voted a certain way.

Husker
"He voted "no" because the term "pre-viable fetus" was not defined to his liking"
-------------
Ah yes and this was BEFORE he got any political heat on the issue. Once his feet started to get a little warm his staff suddenly found themselves back in the spin cycle.

Lilly
By your logic, Obama will definitely not sign any "hate crime" legislation then because we already have laws outlawing violent crimes against another human outside of the womb.

Husker
Like many of us who support the right to abortion, President Obama wants to make it "rare" because 1) other forms of birth control are less expensive for everyone and less dangerous for women, and if people were better educated about and more consistent in using them, we would need fewer abortions, and 2)he recognizes the opposition to abortion from many people of good faith, and if we could reduce the number of abortions it should make those Americans feel that he/we have listened and take their concerns and perspectives seriously.

The challenge here will be for those who oppose abortion to not oppose those actions that will improve the education about, access to, and consistent use of other forms of birth control. Unless of course their real goal isn't reducing the number of abortions but something else.

Not what I call a "principled stand"
On Sunday night, ABC anchor Dan Harris proclaimed: "Today President Obama walked right into the heart of the abortion debate and essentially told both sides to lower the volume."

Assuming for the moment that this characterization is not merely spin, it's speaks of an attempt to portray himself, as usual with this guy, as a neutral observer above the fray, who has done nothing to fan the flames of the controversy.

Hardly what I'd call "humility", Mr. Dionne.

"...it's also ridiculous to place Obama anywhere near the "middle" of the abortion debate. His actual record and his policies as president belie any notion of Obama disappointing the abortion lobby in any way."

Great point, Mr. Bozell, and an astute analysis of the performance at Notre Dame.

A more undesereved honorary degree I cannot imagine.

Bruce
And what about the real goal of Planned Parenthood?

Abortion is a business, plain and simple. Places like Planned Parenthood and others who work in the abortion industry make hundreds of millions of dollars every year off of this gruesome butchery usually at the expense of the poor.

Whenever capitalists or conservatives are involved in a business venture of this magnitude, those on the left always point to the profit margin as proof of moral dishonesty.

It’s funny to me that leftists don’t give a hoot about the exorbitant profits being made as long as it is the abortionists making all the money!

Bruce
When you write, "The challenge here will be for those who oppose abortion to not oppose those actions that will improve the education about, access to, and consistent use of other forms of birth control." you are arguing something that has no basis in fact.

Our children today are exposed to far more sex education and contraceptive education than ever before. Birth control measures are sold in every store in the country. Yet, the number of unwanted pregnancies continues to be out of sight.

This is not an education issue. It's not an exposure issue. It's not an access issue.

It's a morality issue.

Abortion is murder.
Liberals can try to spin, distort and rationalize abortion all they like, but the fact remains that abortion is the murder of an unborn human child. It beggars the imagination that we live in a time and place were people feel no shame about championing infanticide. Abortion is the evil product of a godless society that is totally obsessed with personal gratification. Abortion is murder.

Notre Shame
On Sunday night, ABC anchor Dan Harris proclaimed: "Today President Obama walked right into the heart of the abortion debate and essentially told both sides to lower the volume."

Obama "told?" "told??" Wow, i didn't see where in the Constitution where he has that power. I will send an email to ABC to complain, for all the good that it will do, but once in a while, even the lamestream media sees their left-bent.

In the meantime, all orthodox Catholics and other pro-lifer, boycott Notre Shame by not sending and discouraging your kids, grandkids, neices and nephews, friends' kids from enrolling. I know there are some excellent pro-life profs there, but the fish rots from the head, unFatherly Jenkins.

Krauthammer crushes Dionne
Lon wrote: "E.J. Dionne, who is perhaps the best op-ed writer around,..." Lon, glad you wrote the weasel word "perhaps," because you are trying to get off the hook. Dionne writes nothing except trying to divide the Catholic Church, hierarchy and faithful orthodox laity, versus him and his lib pseudo-Catholics. The word "heresy" derives from dividing the Body of Christ. In fact, the word 'diabolos,' devil, diabolical, comes from the Greek 'dia,' through, 'bolos,' throw, to throw between, to divide. anyone ever seen Mr. super Catholic dionne in Church? If so, ever seen him receive communion? If so, does he say "amen?" amen to Jesus at communion means 'I believe in you, and everything you taught, including the sanctity of all human life, born and pre-born, as you have handed it down through the Church through the centuries." His amen would thus be a lie.

Bruce--
"The challenge here will be for those who oppose abortion to not oppose those actions that will improve the education about, access to, and consistent use of other forms of birth control."

Pro-abortionists are NOT pro-choice. The proof of this is that the education you speak so highly of isn't given in the abortion clinic. Where is the information that the woman may suffer for the rest of her life with depression and regret? Why isn't all the information given to her regarding the very real ramifications of her killing her child? Why can't the information (in the abortion clinic) include a picture of what her baby looks like at the stage of development it's at? So much for your education position. I oppose abortion, and I am supportive of education about what abortion really does to a woman. How about you?

Notre Shame and Obama the Deceiver
Notre Shame

The president deceitfully spoke about "stem cell research," pretending that all his opponents are against all stem cell research, when he knows that Catholics and others are only against Embryonic research, not adult or umbilical cord, both of which have proven of more practical use so far. Catholics and others are against embryonic stem cell research because it uses, it instrumentalizes, one person for the use of another person, and that first person was not able to give consent.

The prez also spoke of "reducing unwanted pregnancies." Do you think he meant chastity until marriage for the ND kids, or artificial contraception, which is against Catholic doctrine even if it is used by the majority of Catholics?

Plus, he spoke of the pro-life and anti-life positions as being "contradictory and irreconcilable." If they are contradictory, then one is right, and one is wrong, the manslaughtering one.

Notre Shame.

No Reason to Exist
Notre Dame no longer has a reason to exist. It has betrayed its supporters, violated its very charter, and fraudulently accepted contributions as a Catholic institution. No longer a Catholic institution, it should not be permitted to continue as a secular university either, since it exists based upon the contributions of its founders and those who have continued its mission up until recently. It has no right to violate its bylaws and continue to exist as an entity in violation of them. Universities close all of the time. Start the process. Sorry about that, students and faculty, but there are consequences for organizations losing their way.

Nshame used to exist for football,
but now it can't even do that right. Knute Rockne, along with all the orthodox, founding Holy Cross priests, must be rolling over in their graves.

Mr. Bozell, just one more angry white
man who likes to spout off about women and their right to make their own decisions about all aspects of their lives, every step of the way! Get over it! Abortion happens, legal or illegal. You, sir, do not get to make decisions for me, ever!

President Obama's speech was clear, calm and consillatory to his distractors. He didn't loose his composure at all! His support for women's rights is being respectful of the majority of people in this country (51% of whom are female), not to mention his wife and two daughters. The American people voted for change; 53.4% of them voted for Obama and he is giving them change. Maybe not always the change we wanted, but he is making the best of the bad situation that was left to him by the repugs and their infamous leader, Dubya.

As for Notre Dame; like most universities, ND has a long history of allowing those with differing opinions to speak. That is how one learns about the world and its people; by hearing about other pov. Any university that can manage to get the POTUS to speak on commencement day is doing alright! I commend the administration, faculty, students and their families on their bravery and choice of speaker for this most special day.

Catholic institutions
for a very long time have betrayed their mandates (assuming one knows that that is). All one has to do is really look at the way women have been treated over the course of the Catholics Church's history, the recent scandal with priest abusing kids and now the revelation that the Catholic Church hide and continues to hide all the abuse in the Irish Reform Schools.

All the "outrange" over a pro-choice, woman-respecting POTUS speaking at the graduation ceremony at ND seems insignificant and sad and just a case of misplaced anger by people with way too much time on their hands.

Above picture of Obama answers the age
old question "Who cut the cheese?" For once in his life Obama fesses up, raises his hand with the usual sheit eating grin on his mug!

Obama and Conciliation
So Obama is the great conciliator and will bring us all together on abortion-- what exactly has he done to cause anyone to believe him.
Would the liberal posters here name one law he has voted on that would limit abortion in any way whatsoever? They have never compromised. So why should we believe they wish to do so now?
I posted this before and nobody said they would be willing to make any real concessions to come to a limitation on abortion we could get together on. I can only assume that they don't want any limitations on abortion whatsoever. So much for conciliation.

T
You nailed it. I was going to ask lib "Lilly" the same question about hate crime laws.

Alice
Those darn Catholics and their disdain for women.
They have to pray the Rosary all the time. You know, " Hail Mary, full of grace; the lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. All that women hatred comes right out (sarcasm).
Leave your bigotry at home. All those scandals you talk about is because the church reached out to homosexuals and look what happened.

Alice
I love how women insist on describing the murder of unborn children as "their right." This seems an unusual right, to say the least.

People like Alice are a perfect representation of the radical self-centeredness of our society. She has no concern at all for the rights of unborn children, only her own. Indeed, Alice seems to conclude that the unborn have no rights at all. After all, the American Left has been telling us all for years that infanticide is nothing more than a "women's rights issue." Pathetic and tragic.

The constitution grants
citizenship rights when one is born, not unborn.
The Constitution also allows one to NOT come to the assistance or be required to aid another for any reason and vice versa. That is why one cannot be forced to give blood, make an organ donation, register for a tissue bank, or die/become disabled for another against their will. No one is a warehouse of spare parts for another to use. Women are not incubators and force childbearing is a form of slavery or servitude, which is prohibited by the Constitution. If any of you do not like abortion, or blood donation, or contraception, or sterilization, or even organ donation once you are dead, then by all means, do not volunteer you body for anything.

As for me, I support life by working in healthcare (hospitals, nursing homes, dialysis, outpatient clinics, etc). When people come to me, the presumption is that they want to improve some aspect of their life and have come for assistance. It would never occur to me to try and "force" someone to do that which is against their will. . .as I have said before, no one makes decisions for me. . .not any of you ever. Get some respect for others or you may find yourself not getting the respect you want when you realy need it.

Commendable, Alice
You are indeed doing much for people in need. However, in abortion, there are two bodies involved, not one. And that is the difference.

Alice
You can rationalize all you want, but you can't change the fact that abortion is murder. Nice try, though, with the "constitutional rights" argument. I'm sure that bit of legalism comes as a big comfort to unborn babies as they are being killed.

Don't you feel even a little ashamed of championing the death of unborn human babies?

Alice
I also liked your little jab about people needing to give you "respect." How about if I give you the same amount of respect you seem to have for unborn babies?

By the way, the Constitution does not differentiate between the born and the unborn. That is merely a half-baked way to rationalize infanticide.

Alice
I hate to keep harping on this, but...

Your post is a perfect example of the kind of self-centeredness I was talking about. You seem very concerned that others are trying control you or force their will upon you. But can't you understand that abortion is about more than just you? There is another human life, just as valuable as yours, that must be considered.

Brent, thank you
for this eloquent piece. You paint BO as he truly looks to Catholics like me; an insincere politican beholden to the abortion industry.
And you are so correct about Reverend Wright (Wrong). BO sat there for 20 years listening to hate and claims to be a Christian? Audacity alright.

Not our president
The illegal alien mass murder of US children.
.
This is what we're dealing with, 50 million dead babies since their insane death cult took over from DC.
There's no chance to respect those people at all.
They're just like the worst dictators of the world. MURDER MURDER MURDER - and it's ok and legal because they say so.
LOL
They score an absolute zero - they are a living hate crime on humanity.

His Daddy Stormed An Abortion Clinic...

As William F. Buckley looks down from Heaven towards his spoiled brat of a nephew, I imagine that he's saying, this isn't the tone in which to pusue our cause."

Catholics? ? ?
The Catholic church teaches that birth control is immoral and a sin

yet Notre Dame not only invites a pro abortion politician but confers an honorary degree on him.

Responsible birth control is still a sin.
but partial birth abortion is now okay?

What's up with that?

Joel-De Oppresso Liber
I am so happy and relieved that I am NOT your daughter, your wife, your sister, your mother or your niece and definitely not your girlfriend or next door neighbor. You give men a bad rap.

Obama's "irrational" abortion stance?
Gag rule:
Under the Bush executive order, it was illegal doctors at US funded international aid organizations to inform a pregnant woman dying from her pregnancy that abortion was a possible option. That's right, the "gag rule" didn't just prevent the doctors from performing lifesaving procedures on the dying woman, it forbade the doctors from even telling the woman that a life-saving procedure existed. How on earth can you justify the US from preventing a doctor from informing their patient of a life-saving procedure, despite the fact that abortions are perfectly legal WITHIN the US. This was religious grandstanding by Bush and should never have been tolerated in the first place

GOP and small government
The GOP believes that the government should be small, just small enough to fit in a woman's uterus.

Gag Rule - The Facts - please check them
The details of the Mexico City Policy are spelled out in an official handbook issued by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which is available on request from NRLC (in PDF format).

Basically, the policy required grantees to refrain from performing abortions

***(except to save the life of the mother, or in cases of rape or incest),***

or lobbying to legalize abortion, or otherwise promoting abortion as a family-planning method. The policy explicitly allowed responding to questions about where abortions may be obtained, in countries in which abortions are legal.
