Ads Gone Bad

It's a topic of conversation that's become all too frequent among parents and non-parents alike: What in the world is going on with these disgusting new ads?

It was bad enough that parents have to shield their children from what Hollywood calls entertainment. Now they have to be equally vigilant with the messages and visuals put forward by the advertisers who sponsor that filth.

Parents can become discouraged by the sheer intensity of the commercial manipulation of sex. It's everywhere. Reporter Matt Spector of ABCNews.com recently underlined how the hypersexualization of teenagers in advertising is intensifying. A Greek print ad for previously owned BMW autos features a clearly teenage-looking girl shot from her naked shoulders up, her blond hair splayed around her head across the page. The ad's come-hither sentence: "You know you're not the first."

Ads for American Apparel underwear are so suggestive they seem like a "homage to pornography." That is no exaggeration. They've actually used porn actresses in their print ads. Spector reports that in one ad, a girl wearing only American Apparel underwear can be seen crawling between a man's legs. In the next shot, the model is licking the crotch of the man's underwear, glancing seductively at the camera.

Liz Perle, editor-in-chief of the group Common Sense Media, said advertisers are selling more than a product. They are marketing a complete sexual lifestyle. "Kids are exposed at younger and younger ages to more and more sexually graphic material. When you show an ad that showcases shortcuts to those things, you're not just selling underwear or T-shirts, you're selling whole ways of being."

Perle is correct when she insists that hyper-sexual ads using teenage models (or twentysomething models that pass for teenagers) creates a template for what could be considered normal behavior for a teen, and she insists that advertisers shouldn't be allowed to use teenage models (or younger) to peddle that message: "I'd just say to the creators of these ads, Put your 12-year-old girl or boy in front of them and see if you repeat them' That should be the sanity check."

Spector also focused on the new print ads for the teen drama "Gossip Girl" on the little-watched CW network. They drew attention by using the disapproving words of TV critics to sell the show. One features a teenage girl character with her eyes closed and her mouth open as a man nuzzles her neck, with the Boston Herald's verdict: "Every Parent's Nightmare."

Another ad features a topless girl in a pool passionately kissing a boy with his back to the camera. The critical words came from the New York Post: "A Nasty Piece of Work." Get this: Ad Week magazine revealed a new trick on CW's part: The ad is racier than the show. In the actual scene from the show, the girl is wearing a bikini. So network promoters have (SET ITAL) fewer (END ITAL) scruples than the networks they're promoting.

A third ad by the CW network marketing department promoting "Gossip Girl" features two teenagers in bed, and it triggered this critique from the Parents Television Council: "Mind-Blowingly Inappropriate." This was the ultimate spit in the face to parents. The message sent to their children: You should watch this show upstairs in your room while your nerdy parents aren't looking.

Marketing consultant Tina Wells took on this campaign in The Huffington Post with an interesting twist. To what degree are the show promoters on the CW network really just perpetuating their own kinky stereotypes of teens, instead of reflecting the real attitudes of their target audience? Advertisers see young people as nothing but sex-hungry bags of hormones. "It's what they want kids to be, but I bet when they're sitting in that room coming up with the show's concept, there isn't a person under 20 anywhere in the vicinity."

Wells goes to the numbers. "Gossip Girl" has been hailed in the media as a hot place where teens go to watch the pretty young things display the latest fashions (at least before they take them off). But it's not true. Wells suggests these smutty new CW ads are "an act of total, irresponsible desperation," since the show "averaged 2.6 million viewers per new episode, and only about 500,000 are teens, the show's supposed target market." By comparison, MTV's "The Hills" blew "Gossip Girl" out of the water in terms of popularity among teens, and it's a reality show produced on a fraction of their budget. CW's problem? Their teen scenes aren't seen as realistic.

In the final analysis, the irony of all this advertising is that it's actually the opposite of boldness or daring to try and exploit sex to sell goods. It's become the most hackneyed trick in a yellowed old book. Those executives signing off on this garbage are little more than dirty old men. And women.

I mean, that's the impression I got from the MRC's report entittled "Huffington's House of Horrors." Oh, wait: If it's politically advantageous to you, then I guess it's "Sign me up and call me Jimmy Carter!"

The one I hate
is the Bud Light *Mr. Bag of Marbles* ad. While watching the 4 hour presentation *Race to Mars* on Discovery channel I saw this ad FIFTEEN TIMES.

Had I been favourably disposed toward Bud Light before that, I would have sworn off it forever long before No. 15.

Personally I never buy anything because of its ads.

Erectile Dysfunction Commercials
Ellen, could the real problem be your personal discomfort when it comes to discussing sexual matters, and not the appropriateness of eight-year-olds being exposed (heh) to ads for erectile dysfunction solutions?

You come across as the sort of person who wouldn't say "p*nis" if she had a mouthful. (I had to Bowdlerize the spelling because the Townhall.com software was apparently written by people like you; it wouldn't accept the actual word. Which is silly, because it's just a clinical term for a body part, not obscene or even profane.)

As a former eight-year-old boy, I can assure you that eight-year-old boys know what erections are. And you can bet that they already know about sex, as well.

The real problem is grossness, not sexuality, in TV commercials.

One evening my parents had the TV on while they ate dinner. They were watching one of those call-in doctor shows. A woman caller was saying that she had vaginal discharge that "was the consistency of yogurt," and "stank."

Great stuff at dinnertime, eh?

I'm sure Ellen would never talk with her mouth full. It's not polite.

That said, I'm with Brent. The ads here in Los Angeles defy belief. I hate the Joe's Jeans ads more than any in the world: last month they had a huge billboard of a teenage (looking) girl pulling her jeans down to reveal nearly half her behind, crack and all. And they had it right across the street from Hollywood High School.

Joe's jeans routinely have naked butt billboards, I mean full nudity, thirty feet high.

Glad to not watch
It's sad, very sad that it has come to this but it has. We choose to not have television come into our home because of this. I don't want government involved censoring so we censor our home ourselves. We watch movies, via dvd and vhs. Bummer everyone is exposed to billboards. I think the answer is to contact the people. If you do not like the product advertising on a certain program that you like, contact the show. If you do not like the show that a product you like is advertising on, let the product company know and let them know that you will not buy their product if they continue. If everybody voiced their opinions to the right people and really put their money where their mouth is it could actually make a difference. It's all about money. I heard quite some time ago the only REAL vote, the only real say we have is where or how we spend out money. Think about it - it's true.

So you think overloading people's senses with sexuality is responsible for those improvements?

Can anyone tell me that they honestly believe it is an improvement for society to sexualize teens?

And as for 7Sticks - what's wrong with pointing out that even people with whom the author disagrees most of the time recognize that there is a problem here? Seems to me if you have writers on TownHall and Huffington agreeing on ANYTHING as being a problem, there might be some validity to the issue. That would mean libertines like you are the ones with a questionable point of view.

Conservatives and femininsts
It's an awkward relationship that rarely ends in marriage, but when it comes to our pornographic culture they meet and hold hands.

Feminists worry about girls learning that sexuality is their power and that they are objects for male pleasure. So do conservatives, but often their concern is chastity. Both worry about self-esteem linked to sexuality and not personality and accomplishment.

Social conservatives and feminists happily censure. Libertarian conservatives believe they not the government must deal with the problem--some get rid of their tvs.

"The market should not dictate our values, but we should dictate values to the market?" Tough question.

Letting your opinion be known to the business "powers that be" is just that. If enough people voice their opinion they will listen. If enough people stop buying products of which they find the advertising "offensive" or advertise on "offensive" shows it would make a difference. I'm not saying what I think would be offensive to you and vice-versa. Voice your opinion.

Not a sarcastic question here: what is a libertarian conservative? I am conservative, I didn't know there was another adjective to add. Maybe I am. Is it bad?

don't watch
We don't watch TV any more! Some times we watch a DVD movie. Maybe twice a year, we watch a sports event.

We do lots of interesting things like read, walk, sail, internet, family activities. We just don't watch the TV. There is nothing there.

Life outside of popular culture is pretty nice.

What advertising?

Is Bozell really suggesting that getting teenagers to do something by indicating that their parents would disapprove is a new technique? That was old before Bozell was born.
It doesn't sound like the Gossip Girls ads do anything new in this respect.

And while Bozell tries to suggest that the show is not successful, my impression is that it is the most successful on the CW, and probably a decent money maker for them.

Libertarians believe in limited government--very limited government, which in their view makes us more free. Libertarians, if they are consistent with their philosophy would decriminalize drugs (you choose to use or not), eliminate social security (you decide how to plan for retirement), eliminate OSHA (you choose to work there), legalize prostitution (a contract between two self-interested rational free people), reduce taxes dramatically (no social programs)---government only exists for the military, police, the court system, and certain "externalities" like interstate roads or pollution accountability.

Social conservatives agree with small government but believe the role of government has a place to enforce morality--drugs, pornography, etc. Libertarians don't believe in the "paternalistic" state.

Yep, I'm a libertarian. I thought all that went with being a "constitutional conservative. Does that make me a constitutionalist libertarian conservative?

Offshore: ditto! It's riot when my daughters bring their OK and Star mags to the house. We all laugh at how important the mags make "all the latest" seem so. 7 & 3 year old grand kids with us for the summer, I don't let them have their video games either - reading and outdoors is the life for them - they love it!

nd the first three paragraphs I though it was going to be about the McCain - Paris Ads. Everything Bozell wrote seemed to apply to them.

These appalling ad people are so lacking in imagination they have to use porn to attract attention. The companies should be held accountible. I have grandchildren (girls) to which these stupid ads are aimed. Next for me: writing to these idiots and let them know how I feel.

This is where libertarians lose me: They believe environmental pollution is a problem but ignore the damage done by moral pollution. We the people have an obligation to maintain a healthy environment, both physical and moral.

The battle is in defining moral health just as much as it is in defining environmental health.

Libertarians take the easy way out.

Must see ad
The Guiness ad. Haven't seen it on tv, but then, I don't watch much tv. It's a shot of a woman balancing a bottle of Guiness in the small of her back, and then.... well, you'll just have to go to youtube and find out for yourself.

It was LIVE TV

I remember years ago when live TV could be “worse” than the current Ads.

Back in the ’40s, just as TV was getting started, everything was live. During one of the more famous drama shows, a young man, wearing shorts, was sitting in a chair, with a beautiful young lady sitting on the floor between his legs talking to him.

It became very obvious that he was not “acting” he was being a normal young man with a beautiful lady nearby.

He kept trying to move where the “problem” was not so obvious to the TV camera, but as the scene went on, it was also obvious the young lady was enjoying the scene, more than the writer and director had planned.



Sexualizing everything
Dear Mr. Bozell:


I play in cribbage tournaments and belong to a club. For some time I have been addressing the "sexulaizing of the card game." Sexual innuendo is used "about a maneuvre," a card or the pegs. I even referred to the Ethics Committee of the association to have the behavior addressed.

It appears there are any number of people either high on alcohol or drugs who revert to base comparisons as a maneuvre to throw you off your game. This behavior is fed by the advertisements seen in the general society. We need to get back to behaving like "ladies and gentlemen." No where is that more needed than as an example to our young people.

Good observations. Then we wonder why we have so many sexually active teens. Isn't it obvious why?

Stupid Commercials.
I am one who barely tolerates most commercials. Many times,I have turned the channel so as not sit through an ad.

Sometimes I forget what I was channel watching. There are a few ads that are cute,such as the GEICO ad with the gecko.

The ads about personal products are offensive to me,especially when other family members are present.

I suppose I am just an old fogey,but we are heading towards the time when nothing will be held back. Not much is now.

Brent - great column and I agree
with your observations. The sad part is there is absolutely NOTHING we can do about it other than turn off the television...writing letters or making phone calls don't seem to have much of an impact.

I believe writers of movies, ads and television shows are doing their utmost to make their unsavory thoughts and ways of life acceptable to the general public. Money from this household does NOT find its way to these people! No purchases are made because of an advertisement and MANY are NOT made because of an advertisement.

Re: all posters who wish to characterize those of us who choose to keep "personal" matters personal as backward, I much prefer a civilized society, thank you very much! Whatever thoughts, words or deeds you wish to make a part of your life is PERSONAL to you and I would appreciate it very much if it was kept that way - please don't do me any "favors" by including me in them!

Buy a second TV


Since this column is about TV, let me give you a little information that was so worthwhile to me and my Sweetie. I have told this story to doctors and they said they have suggested it to some patients.

Even before my Sweetie became ill, I noticed that when I wanted to watch a ball game, Sweetie would go to the bedroom to watch her TV program. I wanted her right next to me, so finally I got smart enough to solve the problem for only $150. I bought another TV.

Later when she became ill, I had two TVs in the Den and two in the Bedroom. She needed a hearing device anyway, so she listened to her program through an earpiece.

Oh how I wish I had thought of that earlier. Well, I did have that after a fashion years ago. Before Apple Computer Company became the Apple Toy Company, my MAC had a Cable TV plug, and software to make it an excellent TV. I could put a small TV picture anywhere I wanted, and do my work elsewhere on the screen.

Then some idiot at Apple, decided that they only cared about people who would buy a toy, and took the TV off the computer.

Not even close
Bozell is not even close to getting a grip on this issue. The corporations that create these ads and that own the networks are good old American businesses, operating in the free market economy, and catering to the demands of consumers. Libertarians can't criticize the results at all; they've got no basis to disapprove. Social conservatives, however, refuse to look critically at the market. There is, and always has been, a market for sexualizing, as we now call it, or just plain old sex. So, what exactly can conservatives do about it? The only thing they can do, which is consistent with their ideology, is to call for strong government regulation. So, c'mon Bozell--put your cards on the table.

Dirty old men
Your APA wrote a report called "The Sexualisation of Young Girls in the Media" that expresed concerns about how girls were viewed in adverts and shows that, as Bozell indicates, are commissioned by executives whose teenage days are long past. ("Dirty old men", we call them over the river.)

The title of the Australian report was even more succinct. It was called "Corporate Paedophilia".

Remember a few years ago they were setting up huge ads in their stores in black and white showing 10-13 old girls in thongs so skimpy they looked more like G-strings? As if girls that age NEED to stroll on a beach in ANY kind of thong.

The Lolita Ideal
This is what Hollyweird and most "progressives" are trying to norm. Between 30-something ad men pushing near nudity at the beach for 11-14 year old girls and the "Brazilian wax" craze I wonder about some "men".

A lightweight actress, famous for playing a vampire slayer for many seasons and marrying ANOTHER Hollyweird lightweight, went on Stern's TV show and waxed (pun intended) over her Brazilian treatment. About how thorough it was and how her husband liked it. Show me a guy who gets off on that and I'll show you a closet pedophile.

Maybe you're old enough to remember when prominent feminists Catherinc MacKinnon and the late Andrea Dworkin allied themselves with Jerry Falwell to work for local ordinances to ban pornography. Both sides agreed that pornography was harmful to girls and women.

What annoys me about many conservatives is their completely undocumented belief that feminism somehow or other promotes the sexualization of girls! I guess the conservative logic is:

We don't like the sexualization of young girls and pornography.

We don't like feminists.

Therefore feminists promote the sexualization of young girls and pornography.

All, right conservative logic-choppers: Name the logical fallacy exemplified here!


Hyper sexualized teen ads
Haven't seen the ads referred to by Bozell, but, going by his description, it strikes me that the creators of the ads are expressing their own pedophilia. What the teenagers shown in the ads actually want is irrelevant--it's ad creators' fantasies that are being displayed.

These children
and I MEAN children were shot nude from behind but for an minimalist thong that looked more like Brazilian buttfloss than a bikini bottom! In WHAT world does THAT belong on bus ads, store signs and billboards? We're talking no older than 13-14 and many younger.

Kids used For Sex & $
It's up to parents and government and ad agencies to stop using children for sexual and grown up ads for profit - But, if judges and politicians are watching porno with kids involved and disrespecting women then what can you expect from a country whose morality has fallen into the toilet while kids are at risk.

As a former contract executive at the Screen Actors Guild, I cannot tell you how many parents begged me to let their under age children work these shoots.

These parents do not give a damn about their own children.
