Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

When the news broke that Dan Rather was suing CBS News for $70 million for somehow destroying his reputation, the most noticeable reaction came from the media establishment itself. From the first story in The New York Times, it carried a different tone between the lines of the breaking news. Rather's former colleagues think he's lost his marbles.

The Times story by Jacques Steinberg said Rather's career came to an "inglorious end" and now he's taking "vehement issue" with CBS's soft-scrub internal investigation. Rather claimed "to be reduced to little more than a patsy" in the story and now works for an "obscure cable channel." The implication between the lines? Gunga Dan's picked one battle too many.

Almost no one outside the vast expanse of Dan Rather's ego thinks this lawsuit is a good idea either for CBS or for Rather. Even people who were fired for helping him produce the despicable phony-document stunt against President Bush in 2004 said he had gone off the "deep end" by portraying himself as a clueless narrator who was too busy covering Bill Clinton's heart problems to obsess over George Bush's National Guard records. Contrary to Rather's insistence that he was a patsy, his co-workers said he pressed hard on the story, chewing over every line.

The legal brief itself was Rather's ego on parade, right from the first lines introducing the plaintiff as "Dan Rather, one of the foremost broadcast journalists of our time." He was the earnest Uncle Sam of journalistic integrity: "Throughout his career, Mr. Rather has promoted, championed, and been emblematic of journalistic independence and journalistic freedom from extraneous interference." Vanity, thy name is Rather.

Rather added to that hootenanny of chutzpah by appearing on CNN's "Larry King Live" to declare, "We have to somehow get back to integrity in the news." Next we'll hear Bill Clinton on that network promoting abstinence.

In Rather's fevered brain, he is the populist against Big Corporations and Big Government in collusion, a vast right-wing conspiracy on steroids. He is the idealist in the middle of an Oliver Stone movie who keeps the red, beating heart of democracy alive. He declared at the top of the Larry King show that he sued CBS because "somebody, some time has got to take a stand and say democracy cannot survive, much less thrive" in the current era of corporate-government collusion.

Rather was not the victim of this episode. The wronged man in this story was President George Bush. Before you even engage Rather on his so-called "facts" in his disgraced story, there was at its very beginnings a glaring partisan double standard. Dan Rather never demonstrated an investigative journalist's ardor to explore the draft records of Bill Clinton, but Rather and his enabler Mary Mapes dove into Bush's records. He went after Bush's military record during the 2004 campaign, but had no time to investigate the scandal surrounding Kerry's Vietnam record.

Democracy is not synonymous with whatever hatchet job Dan Rather bravely pursues, but with each citizen's input in the electoral process. The bloggers and reporters who picked Rather's story apart? That was democracy in action, too. Even the liberal media quickly discovered in their probes that CBS had no checks or balances in their one-sided war on Bush, and rightly denounced them. That was also a free press doing its job.

What CBS put on the air in September 2004 was not "independent" journalism -- it was partisan hackwork, dependent on Bush-hating Democrats to secure the phony documents. Mapes was pressed to put her document-leaker in contact with the Kerry campaign in a quid pro quo for the allegedly important papers. In the end, the proper I-word for Rather's journalism on this story isn't "independent," it's "indefensible."

Dan Rather does have prominent defenders who are as loopy as he is. Rosie O'Donnell wrote Rather one of her trademark lower-case poems: "it has to shift / dan rather / saying there is a man behind the curtain / that he will not pretend / at one time being a journalist meant something / when we had a free press in this country."

On the Bill Maher show on HBO, leftist comedienne Janeane Garofalo gave Dan her support: "I have no doubt that there were executives at CBS that folded under right-wing coercion. ... It doesn't seem like it's a democracy at all when you let that happen."

Garofalo is a pitch-perfect Rather ally, a woman who took to the little-watched MSNBC network and proclaimed President Bush was "unelectable, in my opinion" -- on the night of his second inauguration.

The Rather Fan Club requires its members to be just like their idol -- in complete denial.

say goodnite danny
someone needs to put that rabid dog rather to sleep

Dan will be verrry rich
What's interesting to note here is that if Rather's coverage of how Bush went AWOL from National Guard duty during the Vietnam war (while other, better men fought and died in his place), he would've been able to show that Bush's disregard for his duty to this country would've cost less-connected shirkers time in the brig. Instead, we are now saddled with the worst president to ever come down the pike - partly due to the fact that a bunch of basement keyboard bozos stormed CBS with claims of amatuer sleuthing that had no basis in reality.

Dan the Man
Mr. Rather lost touch with reality decades ago and should have fired for gross egocentricity as well as general stupidity before Dubya was even known. The man, in his own colorful words IS dumber than a sackful of hammers. (citatation: appearance on the O'Reilly Factor)

Come on, Talisman...
...you can dump on Bush or love Rather, those are matters of opinion. But any honest person that actually looked at the evidence Danny-boy was using in his hack job story could easily see the gross and glaring discrepancies.

Maybe Bush took the easy road during the Vietnam war by going into the national guard but he wasn't AWOL. All evidence shows otherwise. BTW, do you have a problem with Kerry coming home and defaming the 'better men fighting and dieing', or is that ok with you? Gee, at least pretend to be consistent.

BDS redux?
Will the same arrogant Bush Derangement Syndrome posters appear here as several days ago? Talisman is already showing that there are many who actually do believe that the messages were real and it was poor faxing that made the memos miraculously transform into something done on MicroSoft Word rather than the manual typewriters in use at the time. Bandicoot found a priceless link for us on the last story: Mary Mapes writing about the episode. If you have the stomach for it (and enough willful suspension of disbelief), check out

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mary-mapes/courage-for-dan-rather_b_65257.html

Sorry for the link length, but remember: only the major news media can be trusted. Bloggers are only make-believe experts.

And they wonder why their ratings are dropping.

Bush? Worst President?
Now -- I don't happen to like Bush --

But I can't see how anyone can call him the *worst* president we've ever had!

Maybe the worst *Republican* president - - -

;-)

Talisman
So if Rather had been allowed to broadcast the anti-Bush "facts" knowing they were false, we would have been saved from the awful regime of George W. Bush. These are the ravings of a person who so badly wants the world to go away and not bother him with facts. The world is not round, George Bush didn't really win the 2004 election, the records really were genuine - oh, if reality weren't so harsh! You really are worse than Dan Rather, if that's possible. Go back to sleep, it will all feel better in the morning. Good night, Chet!

FOWG
Personnaly I liked this one about Kerry:

"In southern states they beat him like a rented mule."

Unca Alby
I would say Nixon was worse given his economic policies, creation of new federal agencies and the fact that his Watergate actions set us up for Mr. Peanut, the guy that was the worst president ever, except maybe for LBJ..........

I guess Bozo was tired of being a clown!
Bozell's last ten or so columns have actually been pretty decent. It seems he's temporarily stopped calling for the federal government to censor all media, which is welcome (he's still a big government CINO, so I don't expect this to last).

I guess big government isn't so appealing when our guys aren't running it, huh?

Worst president
Think Carter

Oldred
No doubt about that!

Talisman writes:
"What's interesting to note here is that if Rather's coverage of how Bush went AWOL from National Guard duty during the Vietnam war (while other, better men fought and died in his place), ..."

Tell us Tali, did you have any problem with Bubba's draft dodging, or is this just another product of Bush Derangement Syndrome. How many brave men died in Bubba's place???

How many deferments did Kerry get before his number came up, then decided the best option was to enlist in the Navy.

I seem to recall the MSM blew off the Bubba draft dodging because, " that's all in the past, we need to move on"

When Liberals Eat Their Own
Punch my name to read my September 22 review of Rather Delusional's new TV mini-series, a courtroom drama of biblical proportions.

My favorite result of this whole thing is that if CBS management agrees to Rather's accusation, they get to pay him a chunk of money (and all of them probably get fired in disgrace). However, if they fight Rather's accusation, they have to prove this whole story was bogus.

For Conservatives, it is a "Win-Win" senario.

Sick of Hyperbole
Talisman and hosts of others on the left - do you even think about your sound bites as you repeat them ad nauseam? We hear this all the time now - that GWB is the worst president ever. Tell me, o erudite one, can you even name 20 US presidents? And without using Wikipedia, can you then give me a 1 paragraph summary of their administrations? No? I didn't think so. I can't either, but then again, I don't keep repeating asinine phrases about the worst this or the worst that ever.

Excellent column!

I actually watched 3-4mins. of Blather on King's show (Yes, I shocked even myself that I spent that much time... !) and I was pretty sure that I heard Blather blame CBS for this AWOL fiacso.

And now he's suing CBS because they what... destroyed his reputation?

Blather did that to himself a long time ago. How many years did he anchor the lowest rating evening news show?????

Blather has a daughter who should be saying... "Okay Dad. It's okay. Let me help you back to your room and I call the nurse to get your meds."

Talisman
Poor widdle wiberal dweeb Talisman....go back to DU where you belong!

talisman

" a bunch of basement keyboard bozos stormed CBS with claims of amatuer sleuthing that had no basis in reality. "

It was actually the basis is reality that sank the good ship Lolly Dan, CBS.

Bloggers noted the inaccuracies of the documents, that the document used technology not available in 1972 ( Word 6.0, etc. ), and called the MSM's bluff.

PS as a member of the Air National Guard, it is possible to get deployed.

A superb column . . .
Dipsy Dan's concern about the "government-corporation" partnership comes right out of chapter one of the "Communist Manifesto", by Karl Marx. He doesn't seem to be aware in the least of the partnership between the MSM and leftist politics.

The "fat lady" sang for Dan a long time ago. It's really sad that Mr. Blather can't hear. As someone said earlier, whether CBS or Dipsy Dan wins this law suit, it is a WIN-WIN for conservatives (those who brlieve in traditional values).

Mildly curious!!!
I haven't commented much... actually nothing... about Pres. Bush and this Nat'l. Guard duty, and this whole supposed "AWOL" thing. The whole thing was just stupid... and not worth anyone's time.

Kerry made a big issue over it because he was in Viet Nam (for a few days, :-) and, as we know, shot himself in the foot!)

But I am mildly curious about two things.
1. How much time.. broadcast and research man hours, was spent on Pres. Bush's Nat'l. Guard time?

2. How much time.. broadcast and research man hours, was spent on Clinton's military time?

OH YEAH, I FORGOT... CLINTON DIDN'T SPEND ANY TIME IN THE MILITARY...

Clinton was a D-R-A-F-T..D-O-D-G-E-R!!!!!!!!

talisman writes:
"Instead, we are now saddled with the worst president to ever come down the pike - partly due to the fact that a bunch of basement keyboard bozos stormed CBS with claims of amatuer sleuthing that had no basis in reality."

The fact is Rather used a forged document to attemt to swing an election. Kerry on the other hand has kept his military records hidden and it took the Swift Boat guys to expose his phony service where he awarded himself a PH for a self inflicted wound in the rear. Maybe Rather should get a PH for shooting himself in the foot. When you have to use fraudulent documents as a basis of your theory maybe the theory is wrong. Just a thought.

Talisman does not believe what he says.
He just writes comments to rile people up. How else do you explain "the fact that a bunch of basement keyboard bozos stormed CBS with claims of amatuer sleuthing that had no basis in reality."

If there is merit to the story why did it end the way it did? If the documents were genuine how could a bunch of basment bozos derail the story and destroy the reputation and career of such a great "journalist"? My understanding of the "facts" are that the documents were printed in a font that did not exist in the 60s and was developed as part of Microsoft Word.

Another thought that comes to mind is that this was not the first time Rather tried to influence an election - isn't he the same guy that incorrectly called Florida for Gore even before the polls had closed? The guy is the southbound part of a northbound horse.

Worst President ever is Jimmy Carter - in a landslide!

SteveM
John F-word Kerry did not enlist in the Navy. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve. He did so in the hope that he could gain military cred while staying stateside. His unit was called to VN.

GWB's Texas ANG unit could have been called to VN just as easily as JF-wK's USNR unit was.

Worst president? That's easy
Jimmy Carter, hands down. It was his ineptitude that began our "Muslim terrorist" problems and he guided us into the worst economy since the Great Depression. He is also the worst ex-president in living memory. He makes Nixon (who really wasn't as bad as the left claims) look like Lincoln.
Speaking of Lincoln: when he was in office it was claimed that he was the worst president. He was accused by the Democrats of being stupid, dishonest, incompetent and taking us into an unnecessary brutal war that could not be won---sound familiar?

Worst president?
That's easy---Jimmy Carter hands down. His ineptitude led to our current "muslim terrorist" problems and gave us the worst economy since the Great Depression. He is also the worst ex-president in living memory. In comparison he makes Nixon (who was never as bad as the left would have you believe) look like Lincoln.

Speaking of Lincoln--while in office the Democrats accused him of being stupid, buffoonish, dishonest, incompetent and taking us into a brutal unnecessary war which could never be won. Sound familiar?

I got a grade I didn't like
Does that mean that I get to now sue the school? I didn't study as well as I should have, but it must be the school's fault right?

Dan Rather is a clown and a jerk who did something that he could not defend, so he does what all good leftists do---blame Bush!

Shrinque: And he did that only after he

was denied yet another deferment! :-)

And, back to you, Blather!

Of course there will be some idiot attorney who will take this case... but what a fool.

If Blather wasn't so reprehensible, this would be almost funny. But the problem is, there is nothing that will give Blather back his "good name" since his name hadn't been that good for some time.

talisman
It must be another well written, truthful article by Brent because talisman seems to rise to the occasion on articles that are undeniably correct. Another stake in the heart of the nutcake talisman. Talisman you must overcome your destructive behavior, this need to show your lack of intelligence and common sense goes too far. take a pill

Rather
I guess admitting that he was wrong would be too much for him.

3 Liberal Girly Men and George W. Bush
Dan Blather – A small minded, hater who tries to bring down those who DARE disagree with his worldview. I remember my father laughing UPROARIOUSLY when Dan Blather got knocked on his can at the 1968 DNC.

Bill Rodham Clinton – A Gutless, Dope Addled, Liberal, Girlyman, Liar of a Cheating Coward! Despises America and left the country rather than serve in The Military. A Disgracefully Poor Excuse for a Human Being!

John Heinz Kerry – Took the LEGAL OPTION available at the time and joined The National Guard. Probably needed the extra money because there wasn’t a rich widow available at the time. His National Guard Unit was called up, he was scratched in combat and applied for a PH. Back in America, he testified AGAINST the US Military. A Backstabbing Traitor, Long Winded Obfuscator, UN Lapdog and an America Hater!

George W. Bush – Took the LEGAL OPTION available at the time and joined The National Guard. His National Guard Unit was NOT called up. Any Vets, correct me if I’m wrong. I seem to recall Johnson and or McNamara putting the kibosh on defoliating North Vietnam for fear of civilian casualties. However, this foliage allowed The NVA & VC to operate with impunity. Had Johnson allowed defoliation to take place, more Air Power would’ve been needed and GWB likely would’ve been called up. I KNOW, it was a CONSPIRACY to keep GWB from going to war. I don’t always agree with GWB, but I ALWAYS respect him. By the time an impartial look at his Presidency takes place, we will all be dead!

talibanman
you must have worked for rather. Last week you claimed that john heinze-kerry got swiftboated because america wants to destroy it's cpngressional medal of honor winners. I again ask you for the details of how kerry was awarded the congressional medal of honor and where the attacks came from to deny your hero his glory. It would seem that while you were dating mary mapes you might have been able to elicit her help to remedy kerry's distress. For the record, the rest of us thought kerry was too busy misfiring rpg's in his haste to get his three purple heart's so he could escape viet nam after 3 months while others served a full 12 plus months.

clusiana
Rather claimed to have served in the USMC. He was in the USMC for about a month before they let him go. Not sure, but I think he could not adjust to military life. Rather done himself in. He's a first class whiner. He's manufactured news stories since VN.

Clusiana
George W. Bush served two years of active duty. (It takes a lot of time to train to fly an F-102.)

Talisman is right!
I have seen pictures of Bush during his supposed Guard service. He was actually bar hopping and cavorting with known criminals. Of course the pictures of him doing these things were penned in crayon by Dan Rather's grandchildren ...but I trust the validity of my sources!

All sarcasm aside folks, don't take anything Talisman says seriously. The guy is more bitter than day old german beer.

Georgetwin...
...like your father,I watched Blather get knocked on his butt and had the same reaction: Laughed uproariously!

Gee,do you think I might be your father?

JUST KIDDING! HONEST!

WildWest
It makes you wonder HOW MANY OTHER stories were MANUFACTURED by Rather/Cronkite/etc.

Nam65-66
NO PROBLEM! My Dad would laugh the LOUDEST!

Nam65-66
i had 2 cousins in Nam in that period. Do Michael Clutter or Jerry Clutter ring a bell?

georgetwin
it seems the legacy of hosting cbs news is upon retirement senility sets in. It is merely a matter of time before rather joins cronkite in the corner where you generally place the drooling old uncle while he eats his strained carrots.

If only Dan were one-of-a-kind...
"Dan Rather, one of the foremost broadcast journalists of our time."

"Throughout his career, Mr. Rather has promoted, championed, and been emblematic of journalistic independence and journalistic freedom from extraneous interference."

Try it this way:

"Bill O'Reilly, one of the foremost broadcast journalists of our time."

or

"Throughout his career, Mr. O'Reilly has promoted, championed, and been emblematic of journalistic independence and journalistic freedom from extraneous interference."

To be fair to Rather and O'Reilly, you could insert the names of ANY news "talent" and be convinced that this is their TRUE opionion of themselves.

TV journalism ISN't journalism at all... welcome to the future.

Kerry's medals

like all libs you can't get away from the past when it concerns repubs. You always ignore the clinton's past as though there is irrelevant. Saw you other comments about camping. I was under the impression you were part of that crew rudy got rid of when he cleaned up times square. I guess you found another part of the city that panders to perverts "casmping out" in the porno district

Lack of substance
as shown through the lack of reasonable discussion of topics that are important.

TH has been full of tripe now for about a week. Honestly, if that's all you've got, the conservative movement is dead.

NYC DOGG You wrote....
"manufactured? That Bush went AWOL from his draft dodge was well known. That he was incompetent as an airman is well known"
*************************************************
Well known? Really? What is your source? Oh, I see, same as Rather's.

Unca Alby
He started ok, but he is fast becoming the worst see: illegal immigration and law of the sea treaty. You will see he does NOT have America's Borders or best interest at heart!

NYC HOG
Does Soreass pay you according to the number of words you write, according to how many LIBERAL LIES you tell or by HOW STUPID your posts are? Whichever way it is, you have a BIG CHECK coming?

NYC DOGG: "Well known?" By whom?

Actually, it's "believed" by those who hate GWB, and WANT to believe anything negative about him.

It's "believed" by those who can't get over the fact that GWB not only IS the Pres., but has been elected TWICE!

It's "believed" by those who have a fixed false belief that is resistant to reason or confrontation with actual fact, and that is what makes the "delusional."

You people
sure about john (never shot a duck in my life) kerry getting deferments? My understanding was he went to have it to add to political resume. Of course he got the scratch, shot an unarmed 16 year old and then came home and lied through his teeth with jane (never met a NVA or cong I didn't love) fonda. At least this is what I have read on the subject.

NYC Dog

You didn't refute Carter's failures , only listed Bush's.

The subject was Carter. You need to adress the subject instead of demonstrating your BDS.

Bush definitely has his failings , but worst, I don't think so. Like with Lincoln or even Truman , the historians will be the ones to make the call and write the books.

anne
you know that old story about the broken record that can't move on to the next line, well that describes the dogg. He has two reccurent themes, attacking the president and going down on the clintons. Yesterday he actually came up with something new. He compares conservs camping vacations to brokeback mountain. His experiencing camping was limited to time spent outside the porno stores in times square before rudy cleaned things up so I guess that expalined his brokeback reference.

NYC DOGG
thats funny because it was CLINTON who refused to take custody of OBL back when embassy’s were being bombed and he did NOTHING to prevent 9-11, well other than some cigar tricks!

This is just too funny for words!!!!
Couric: Slams 'Sloppy' Dan Rather, and now reads minds...

http://kevinmccullough.townhall.com/g/11b47495-9a8b-40d7-9ba0-48119cafd546

Doc: From what I'v read

(and I'll try to find the link) Kerry already had at least one, or maybe two deferments, and wanted a third to (if I recall correctly) to study in Paris...

But, when his second or third deferment was turned down, he decided then that he'd use the military experience on his resume.

No bias, no brains
My complaint is not that each and every TV news Anchorman has a bias, as all reasonable, intelligent humans have, but that most of them deny it, year after year. They brag that they are registered Independents. Sure they are.

Who would want to hear from a person who had no bias, that means they have no brains

People spend billions of dollars each year to go to a theater to see a lift of an eyebrow, a shrug of a shoulder, the curl of a lip, a change in the inflection in voice tone — all those things that are considered the art of acting.

For many years, many Anchormen do those very things while reading the news, but still deny any bias. Anyone who watches and cares knows who the liberals are, so why don’t they just admit it?

Cronkite admitted it, but only after he left TV news.

Anne
Kerry asked for one deferrment and didn't get it according to this article from a lib paper.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/03/07/wkerr07.xml&sSheet=/news/2004/03/07/ixnewstop.html

just the facts m'aam + questiones
1) Before danny boy went on the air with the "report" he was told by C BS "fact checkers" that they COULD NOT VOUCH FOR THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE DOCUMENTS ON WHICH THE "REPORT" WAS BASED.

2) He did the "report" anyway.

3) It didn't take more than a few hours for the "report" to be labeled a fraud.

4) Question - why are we still talking about this?

5) Has anyone contacted Sean Penn and Barbra Streisand for the views on this earth-shattering controversy?

60 If not - why not?

Thanks Anne
Whenever i badmouth sombody with the truth, i like to know the whole story :)

NYC dogg = non-sequitor = doggie doo doo
quote: "...Bush went AWOL from his draft dodge..."

Is it just me or does this make no sense? If he was "Away With Out Leave from his draft dodge", doesn't that technically mean he never tried to dodge the draft? And if he never tried to dodge the draft, what's your point, dogg?

And I thought BUSH was inarticulate... LOL.

Goodnight dan
Didn't we all see this lawsuit coming? No, he wasn't a scapegoat - it was just time for his to go. He never reported the news - his show was always "I, Dan Rather, see it this way".
I shall always remember danny hanging on a light pole somewhere in Florida during a hurricane. I really can't get past that!

Definitely Jimmy Carter wins first prize as the worst president ever!

Doc 12:23PM Post "You people."
This was post graduation deferment request...

http://johnkerry-08.com/patriot/quagmire.php

Implicit in Kerry's warning, however, is the notion that he, himself, volunteered for service in Vietnam. Remember Bill Clinton's repetitive "Send me" paean at the Demo Convention? Try again. Kerry's anti-military sentiments were well known when he was a student at Yale. After graduating, Kerry petitioned his draft board for a student deferment so he could study in -- where else? -- Paris. His deferment denied, Kerry then calculated that he could avoid Vietnam by joining the Naval Reserves rather than getting drafted into the Army or Marines, where he would, likely, see combat. Kerry's service record indicates that on 18 February 1966 he enlisted in the USNR under "inactive" status -- and was moved to "active" status after a slot opened for him in Officer Training School.

Thanks Anne
I reckon you’re never too old to learn. I had no ideal what he was up to, I figured him for a glory hound wannabe politician, but I had no ideal how early he started! Guess i am just PO'ED for what he did to our POW's and Vets!

dan the liar
dan showed that he's nothing more than a lying political hack. why didn't he care that kerry lied about his war record. because he's only about hurting republicans and helping the evil ones....btw, rather lied prodigiously about the vietnam war to turn public opinion against the war

Doc: Actually, you have me confused

Are you being somewhat sarcastic????

Can't tell.. :-(

Sorry no Anne

Rather chokes up, and hunkers down
September 26, 3:01 PM
http://www.examiner.com/blogs/Yeas_and_Nays/2007/9/26/Rather-chokes-up-and-hunkers-down

"I'm not in this -- mostly -- with anybody else."
Rather also grew emotional when he revealed that many of his family members and "people who love me very dearly" had urged him not to file the lawsuit.

--------------------------------------------------
This man sounds as though he might be close to a nervous breakdown. I do hope no lawyer takes the case.

Doc; Okay! I think I luv you! :-)

I feel the same way!!!

It was the "Whenever i 'badmouth' sombody with the truth..." that had me confused....

To me, the truth is NEVER badmouthing.

Unfortunately, the left can't quite tell the difference... but...

But another thing (among many) that has bothered me about kerry is that apparently he made it very clear while at Yale that his goal was to be pres.

I could be wrong, but I am very suspect of anyone who, from a young age, has such "goals." That to me is self-serving, opposed to a calling (for lack of a better word) and we know what a great guy clinton was, and he decided as a young kid that he was going to be pres.

Self serving is never a good thing.

Not exactly the same thing as some young kid who decides that he/she is going to be a doctor, or whatever, to help people.

Doc: Just got this in an email... don't
know how to get this to you.....

WASHINGTON, D.C. — "American pilots do not conduct air-raids on villages, killing civilians, nor are our troops cold-blooded murderers or terrorists," said retired Air Force Col. George "Bud" Day, America’s most decorated living veteran and former POW. "But, if you believe some current members of Congress who have accused our men and women in uniform of all that and worse, you would have to conclude our military is a barbarian horde, just as John Kerry had previously said."
"It was a lie then, and it’s an even bigger lie today," Day continued. "The truth is that some in the U.S. Congress and their mouthpieces in the media now represent a much bigger threat to the lives of our men and women in combat, and our national security, than any foreign enemy."
Among his many decorations from World War II, Korea and Vietnam, Col. Day is a Medal of Honor recipient and a combat pilot held captive for more than five years in the infamous Hanoi Hilton prison. He is also the Chairman of the Vietnam Veterans Legacy Foundation (VVLF) which has been embroiled in litigation with Kerry campaign aides since Kerry’s failed Presidential bid. Those lawsuits were recently withdrawn, and the VVLF is now able to reveal the results of its research and investigation efforts. But the VVLF needs your help.
"We were forced to spend over $1 million to defend ourselves in these frivolous lawsuits. In fact we still owe over $250,000 in legal bills. We paid the price of freedom 35 years ago to protect the basic liberties of all Americans, and now we’re paying all over again, to protect our own freedom of speech," said Col. Day, a practicing Florida attorney.
"Unfortunately, as former Prisoners of War, we do not have the money that MoveOn.org has. Nor do we have the ability to obtain special discounts from the New York Times to run full page ads. That is where you can help."

Doc: Just got this in an email... part 2
Col. Day and several other POWs, including the wife of a POW, were sued numerous times by Kerry campaign associates after they participated in a 2004 documentary, "Stolen Honor: Wounds that Never Heal." In that film, Day and other POWs detailed the direct impact Kerry and his fellow anti-war activists, including many U.S. Senators, had on their survival in captivity and even the eventual loss of the Vietnam War.
The producer of "Stolen Honor," Pulitzer Prize-winner and Marine combat veteran, Carlton Sherwood, was also sued in a vain effort by the Kerry Campaign to prevent the documentary from being broadcast or even shown in theaters. It was eventually released in the closing days of the 2004 campaign, primarily on Northern Ohio cable outlets where, according to most post-election news analysts, Sen. Kerry lost his presidential bid.
"Our brave soldiers were and continue to be sold out today by many of those same people, abetted by a new crop of politicians and journalists," Col Day said. "They may say they ’support the troops,’ but they have nothing but contempt for those serving in the military. The reality is many in Congress and the media are hoping for, and invested in, America’s defeat in the Global War on Terrorism just as they forced America’s defeat in Vietnam, years after the last U.S. military combat units were withdrawn."
Col. Day continued:
"The problem is that it was all a lie, staged theatrics, choreographed by the Communists and spoon fed to the American public by unconscionable, ambitious politicians and the press. We now have the hard evidence to prove that. We have obtained documents, records, eyewitness accounts, even the CONFESSIONS of those who originally made those despicable accusations and have now recanted ever witnessing an atrocity, much less committing one. The facts are incontrovertible and compelling."

Doc: part 3
"Our findings prove the accusations made against our military in Vietnam were pure enemy propaganda used by American turncoats to advance their political ambitions and agendas, all trumpeted, by an unquestioning, complicit media," Day said. "Today, other phonies have taken their place, people like Jesse MacBeth and Scott Thomas Beauchamp, whose slanderous accusations against our men and women in Iraq made world-wide headlines even though those reports were baseless, the accusers frauds. Then, as now, the media has been all too eager to hand the microphone over to anyone who wishes to defame America’s soldiers, whether it’s an ambitious politician or a wannabe who never spent a day in uniform, much less a combat zone.
Col. Day said his VVLF organization plans to release its findings once they secure funding to do so.
"This is not over," said Day. "Now we are able to reveal the results of the research and documentation that we acquired. This material will reclaim once and for all the good name and good reputation of a generation of servicemen. It will help make sure that the brave men and women fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan don’t have to go through what we did."
Armed with these testimonies and documented research, the VVLF plans to demonstrate to the American public the truth about those who accused our troops of atrocities and war crimes and those who promoted those falsehoods. The former POWs also intend to show the motives of those responsible and the media propaganda that lead to an entirely false history of Vietnam, just as the press is doing today in Iraq. That is where we need your support.
To present our findings to the American Public, the VVLF needs your help. It is critical that we reveal the truth before Congress repeats the mistake it made over 30 years ago.

Gray Ghost of 8:11
Hadn't thought of that. Priceless. Lose/lose. Schadenfreud is a dish we Americans of German extraction particularly appreciate. CBS and Dan perfectly deserve one another.

I turned off CBS in 1985.

The "show" -- "60 Minutes" -- ran an "episode" concerning the "poisoning" of Americans by our dentists via fillings.

I am not a dentist, but I worked in the medical field for 30+ years and knew first-hand that their information was fabricated to sensationalize. It was, as my mother used to say, "yellow journalism".

I stopped watching CBS News (any variety) that day. Subsequently I have ceased getting my news from any of the old big three networks.

It doesn't make any difference
Rather against CBS is a joke at best. Rather's ego & CBS desperation to obtain recognition, good or bad attention is the object. No one actually cares as both the adversaries have been discredited long ago. The only hope in this case, is that people will have the opportunity to see & hear the dirty linen to erase any doubt of the duplicity of both.

CBS & Kerry
I gave up on CBS News and Dan Rather with their report on the death of President Nixon. I tuned in a couple of minutes after the start of the broadcast and it was all about Watergate, very critical of Richard Nixon and seemingly reporting it as a new event. When I changed channels to a less hostile report I then learned that Nixon had died.

I am and was no fan of Richard Nixon and voted against him every chance I had, but I felt the CBS broadcast was rude and hateful. Whether you liked him or hated him -- there doesn't seem to be much middle ground -- there was a lot more to Richard Nixon and his public life that Watergate and CBS chose to relegate that to the tale end of the report. I have never voluntarily watched CBS news since that time.

Kerry's military service became an issue in the 2004 election because his campaign and the Democrat party made it an issue. In my opinion, if his campaign had not presented him as such a war hero, the Swift Boat Vets complaints would not have mattered -- certainly not to the extent that they did matter. His refusal to release all of his military records also would not have been an issue.

Whether or not Kerry earned his medals, I doubt that he was the first person where the worthiness of his medal was in doubt and he wasn't the last. One specific example, I know of a B-52 gunner who received a Distinguished Flying Cross for " delaying bailing out until over friendly territory." How do I know that? I was present at the same presentation ceremony where I was presented the Air Medal. (It took 35 combat missions to qualify for the basic medal and I had 43 combat missions.)

"What's the frequency, Kenneth?"

I think that Dan Rather has been delusional for many years.

Now it seems he is also suffers from dementia.

sorry...
