Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Conservatives often ponder why more young conservatives don't go into journalism. Here's one easy reason: The path to prizes and prestige doesn't come from fierce investigative probing into liberal sacred cows or sharp-eyed conservative commentary. It comes from pleasing liberals with stories that advance their agenda.

The 2007 Pulitzer Prizes must have been a sad affair, what with no major prize for exposing and ruining an anti-terrorism program, and no major natural disaster like Hurricane Katrina to blame on President Bush. But that doesn't mean the Pulitzers weren't typically political. After all, the panels of judges are stuffed with longstanding figures in the liberal media establishment.

Let's start with the Commentary prize, which was awarded to Cynthia Tucker of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The official Pulitzer Prize Board's press release hailed Tucker's "courageous, clear-headed columns that evince a strong sense of morality and persuasive knowledge of the community." Translation: She's liberal, and she hates George Bush.

Stephen Spruiell of National Review quickly found one recent column that complained: "There are plenty of unindicted liars walking the halls of the Bush White House. ... The Bush team knew they could never have sold American voters on an invasion of Iraq just because Saddam had illicit weapons. So they decided to distort, dissemble and lie."

What precisely is noteworthy in that? Hasn't that been said by every radical left-wing blogger with a modem?

What is noteworthy, perhaps, is the Pulitzer Prize committee standards. As with every other radical left-winger, Tucker can't deliver a shred of evidence to support the accusation of a presidential "lie."

Any conservative student who aspires to be a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist should really try another line of work. Here's the list since George Will won in 1977 and William Safire won in 1978: Charles Krauthammer in 1987, Paul Gigot in 2000 and Dorothy Rabinowitz in 2001. That's five conservatives in 30 years.

Three of the last five winners -- Tucker, Leonard Pitts and Colbert King -- were leftist black columnists. William Raspberry and E.R. Shipp have also won. But the Pulitzer Prize glorifiers have never honored Thomas Sowell or Walter Williams, or other black conservatives.

Since 1992, eight of the 16 Commentary prize winners have been women. Rabinowitz is the only conservative. Anna Quindlen, Maureen Dowd, Eileen McNamara and Shipp are on the liberal list. Mary McGrory (1975) and Ellen Goodman (1980) also won that prize. But there's been no Pulitzer for Mona Charen or Michelle Malkin or Linda Chavez or -- the Pulitzer people will faint -- Ann Coulter.

There's never been a Pulitzer for Bill Buckley or Pat Buchanan or Cal Thomas or Robert Novak. Need we say more?

Perhaps the strangest award, the one revealing the typical liberal attraction to the edgy and anti-American, is the Feature Reporting award given to Andrea Elliott of The New York Times for a three-part series lauding the Brooklyn-based imam Reda Shata.

Let's once again consult the gooey Pulitzer press release: They hailed Elliott "for her intimate, richly textured portrait of an immigrant imam striving to find his way and serve his faithful in America" -- even though Elliott glossed over and made excuses for how the imam and "his faithful" support the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas as a "powerful symbol of resistance."

The press release kept underlining the judges' liberal agenda. The National Reporting Prize was handed to Charlie Savage of The Boston Globe, "for his revelations that President Bush often used 'signing statements' to assert his controversial right to bypass provisions of new laws." This indicates that heavy usage of a story on left-wing publicity machines like Air America and the Huffington Post apparently wins you major Pulitzer considerations.

The International Reporting Prize was awarded to The Wall Street Journal "for its sharply edged reports on the adverse impact of China's booming capitalism on conditions, ranging from inequality to pollution." It might seem odd that this seemingly capitalist newspaper, "the daily diary of the American dream," is winning prizes for muckraking through the social evils of "booming capitalism," but it is certainly some flashy Pulitzer bait.

So when you hear a liberal-media person crow about someone's excellent journalistic qualifications, such as their Pulitzer Prize, it's fairly safe to assume that hallowed journalist wrote something that would make a Hillary Clinton smile from ear to ear, and would make a Rush Limbaugh grimace.

Maybe
Did it ever occur to you, Brent, that maybe "liberals" are just better journalists than "conservatives"? I'm sure you guys will sweep the talk radio awards, don't worry. Oh, no, it's all a vast left-wing conspiracy ... haha. Oh, the right makes it so easy these days. Thanks!

Meaningless
Brent does a great job of stating what has been thought and felt by many for a long time.

The Pulitzer Prize, like the Nobel Peace Prize and the Oscar, and especially Time magazine's goofy "Person of the Year" (You??? ...pfft...cop out) has been rendered meaningless.

Reporters are hardly "brave" for reporting what can be easily heard in their own liberal echo chamber. New insights are nonexistant in liberal opinion blathering, and news generation is formulaic rather than groundbreaking.

Negatvity, indecency and destruction are rife - and these win awards?

Rather than rag on China exclusively for their capitalistic shortcomings, why not report on successes in industry, environmentalism and social progress and hold them up as the ideal? Why focus on only the failures except to destroy a bugeoning economy and attendant wealth-building?

The media has done this to Iraq as well. The successes are numerous but rarely reported, the failures are few but harped on day and night.

The media has become a byword, the latest joke being that no matter what sorry thing happens in the world, the liberal press is able to connect it to their favorite boogiemen: global warming or President Bush.

Pricey

You said it better than I could.

I'm not a fan of Brent, but his points are well documented.

So you get a Pulitzer for saying Bush lied, people died, vast right wing conspiracy led by George Bush?

A conservative will never get another Pulitzer if that, it appears, is the criteria.

concord2123
Liberals are not journalists. They are propagandists. Honest journalism went out the window after Watergate.

Liberal journalists are better!?!?
Right, Concord. What an idiotic statement. Pulitzers are going almost entirely to liberals because they're better journalists. The fact that the judges are liberals and the prizes have become politicized have nothing to do with it.

And pigs fly too.

Thanks for exemplifying the kind of keen, insightful logic that demonstrates why all those libs are making a parade to the awards table.

What's most amazing is that all these allegedly superior journalists can't sell any books, while the vastly inferior Michelle Malkin, Mona Charen, and Ann Coulter not only kick out bestseller after bestseller, but force libs to literally stay up at night trying in vain to refute the evidence they provide for the conclusions they draw.

Didn't Rather get a Pulitzer?
And wasn't his Pulitzer specifically awarded to him for lying about George W. Bush's service record at the Air National Guard?

The only thing that's surprising here is that Bozell, or any other conservative would even care about getting a Pulitzer. How can it mean anything with the way these libclowns are determining who gets it?

Darwin
Kind of like getting one of those coveted Darwin awards.

Concord 2123
Have you ever read Cynthia Tucker? Thought not, or you wouldn't be talking about good journalism. That's just embarrassing.

I do think we have to note that the nonfiction prize went to The Looming Tower by Lawrence Wright, so at least on the book side it wasn't a complete sweep for the left.

Tucker won?
I read the AJC yesterday, which included Cynthias column> her blatant lefty vitriol made almost vomit. But it is our 1st amendment that must be honored.

Rush for Peace
Pulitzers, Oscars, and the Nobel prizes are such a joke, I don't know how any of the people who participate in these shams can keep a straight face. Every one of them are awards for highest achievement in Bush bashing, the most virulent anti-war screed, the stupidest global warming idiocy, or the victimization of evil. They don't fool anyone, except themselves and they look like the fools and buffoons they are.

At least Rush gives me a good laugh everyday, campaigning for the Peace Prize that he has about as much chance of winning as a snowball in he11. Algore will win because he's been pre-selected just like Jimmy "Jew hater" Carter was. Alfred Nobel would be so proud.

conservative journalism
I saw this crap at Syracuse University 30 years ago. Profs used their positions to ridicule conservative students' beliefs...I dropped one jerk's class and complained to the liberal arts dean...the jerk was tenured, so nothing happened. Same thing with a history prof...allowed no other opinions...downgraded term papers etc. I usually agree with Brent. We need to stop the liberal bias in almost all journalism. I was in the USAF (69-73) and apparently the rights I fought for have been denied to me and other fair thinking conservatives. Keep the fires burning, Brent.

Schools of Journalism
One reason why more young conservatives doing go in for journalism is simply because the college kids with the lowest SAT scores gravitate to the schools of journalism (along with education; what a surprise). And does it ever show; i.e. dumb = liberal/leftie. We see it here every day.

Then Again
I am as disgusted as anyone by the liberal slant of journalism in general.

However, I do have one question for Mr. Bozell:

Given the incredible prevalence of liberals in journalism, especially prior to the rise of the alternative media, isn't it statistically inevitable that libs would win the majority of awards, simply by filling a huge majority of the positions of prominence. After all, if no one gets to read your columns (as was the case with most conservatives until recently) you have no chance of winning.

Of course, it is not a good thing that the left so strongly monopolized the media, but I think it is a bit silly to complain the left won all the awards when they also provided all the candidates to win those awards.

In short, if the media is 99% left, why wouldn't 99% (or even 100%) of awards go to the left?

andrews
Read Bozell's column again. He provides plenty of examples of widely disseminated, competent conservative journalists who have no chance whatsoever of ever getting a Pulitzer Prize from the leftist totalitarians comprising the rewards committee. Does your statistical "argument" also hold for the Nobel Peace Prize?

What about PBS & NPR rackets?
Hello Brent,

I never cared that much for the Pulitzers or what they meant to the journalist community.

However, this year, as a resident of Atlanta, it irked me no end that a dishonest, unintelligent and biased person like Ms Tucker was given this award. It sickens me that in a conservative state like Georgia, our biggest city does not have another newspaper to express opinion right-of-center.

I sincerely feel that were Ms Tucker not a "female, African American", the Pulitzers would not have cared a damn for her. However, the powerful combo of her gender and race is too irresistible for liberal organizations like the Pulitzers.

The same applies for news organizations like NPR and PBS. I just don't think that conservatives are tough enough on either NPR or PBS for their biased news and opinion. Conservatives must get together and boycott NPR and PBS till corrective measures are taken to address balance in their coverage. Only if opinion makers like yourself start this movement, can we act tough with "public stations".

Buzzkat
I was thinking mroe of the 1970's and 1980's. Of those Mr. Bozell mentions, most did their most prominent work since 2000, or since the mid-1990's at the earliest. Except for Buckley, Krauthammer and Will, there are few he lists who were doing much prominent work in the 1970's. (I am thinking primarily of commentary here, as many conservatives have slaved away in thankless factual reproting jobs for a long time.)

My point was that, especially in the 70's and 80's, the "star" slots were almost entirely held by the left, and so, of course the left won the awards. the guy who writes below the fold for the Podunk Gazette will not get a Pulitzer no matter how hard he works, or how good his writing. The guy with an NYT by-line very week obviously starts with a leg up, so it is no surprise if he wins.

I think you are telescoping your vision (as is Mr. Bozell) into the current decade, while complaining about 30 years of lack of recognition. Prior to 2000 (or 1995 at the absolute earliest) there were few who were both conservative and in a prominent position to win.

And, please, go back and read again yourself. As Mtr. Bozell clearly complains about awards "since 1977" and "since 1978", so he is talking of the 1980's and 1990's when my point is perfectly valid.

Buzzkat
Also, you seem to think I am defending the Pulitzer people. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

I think the Pulitzers are awarded on entirely political grounds (think Duranty and Ukraine here), and I think the media in general is highly slanted to the left.

My entire point is, prior to veyr recent times, the left owned the media, so, of course they got all the awards.

Here is a comparable example: almost every oscar in the 70's, 80's and 90's went to a leftists. It isn't that the oscars are necessarily politicized (they are somewhat), but that almost every actor in Hollywood is a leftist.

So, my point is, Mr. Bozell is complaining about the inevitable. (And, as he has done far better articles, I think wasting his time on this is a bad idea.) The left runs the media, occupies almost every position of prominence, so of course they get all the awards. I think complaining about that is just a bit silly.

Far better to attack the left for monopolizing media in the first place, as that seems the root cause of the problem. Once the right has more prominence in the mainstream media, awards will come to them, or they won't, and we will have proof of a definite bias. But while the left occupies almost all of the prominent media positions, complaining that they win awards seems a bit silly to me.

Also, to be honest, who cares about Pulitzer prizes? Saying "A Pulitzer prize winning writer believes..." has as much influence on most opinions as saying "Miss America believes..." or "The winner on American Idol believes...". No one cares. (And if they do, they really, really frighten me.)

Pulitzer for Tucker?
As Pricey has stated, the Nobel Peace Prize and Oscar are meaningless (Time Magazine's "....of the Year" was meaningless from the start).

How about give the Pulitzer to a poor uneducated child from Patna instead (as aforesaid child could probably write almost as well as Tucker--without even trying)?

The left is determined
To remake the whole world into their dream world. Their view is not only possible, it is mandatory, and they will tolerate no dissension. How else can one explain holding concerts, burning tens of thousands of gallons of fuel, to reduce carbon? Or explain driving hundreds of miles to protest drilling a well, or their determination to get farmers and ranchers off the land to "preserve habitat"?

Pulitzer
When ever I read about the Pulitzer Prize I'm reminded of Mark Twain's comment about complements.
"If you can't get a complement any other way, pay yourself one." Ergo Pulitzer Prize.

Marion
My favorite is the left going out into a pristine field, dragging along tens of thousands of concert-goers and all the related filth and garbage, to hold a concert, completely destroying that "pristine habitat" to raise money for environmental awareness... Great plan guys! Why not hold a baby seal clubbing fund raiser for animal rights next?

YMML is a TOOL
I can't quite emulate his wonderful penchant for random capitalization, but here is a reply:

perhaps conservatives don't go into media because they put ideology above the truth? Think again. The left owns the schools of journalism and puts their partisan views above the truth. Thuis not only is it hard for a conservative to make it through a school of journalism, but who would want to? I avoided studying economics at some universities because I knew I would ahev to regurgitate false Marxist dogma to graduate. Same with many who would otherwise be journalists. If you have to seel out your beliefs to get a diploma, many will not enter the field.

How is that fact, mist YMML? I know you will not believe it, but prove me wrong. Show me how the schools of journalism (not to mention the employers who hire from those shcools) are not both overwhelmingly left wing and overwhelmingly partisan in their leftist beliefs.

Go on.

Typo
That was "Mister YMML", though, now that I think about it, I don't know if YMML is a mister or a mrs. or a miss or a ms or something else entirely. So, better to just use "YMML" without the honorific.

and they call liberals crybabies?
On a more serious note, Boz conviently fails to mention the Pulitzer prize winning coverage of Bush's misuse of signing letters to bypass the courts and congress.

I want to write so I can win a Prize?
Brent Bozell III

OMG, the Bush white house has lied and lied badly. Why oh why does everything they claim or say to turn out to not be true? Either its extreme incompetence or they are liars. I am more comfortable with the later, since we expect that out of politicians.

How about FOX NEWS start there own literary Prize and give it to some of the great thinkers of our day, Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Hannity and Ann Coulter. Who cares what the Pulitzer does. You get into something because you have a passion for it, not because you want to win a prize. The problem with conservative writers, is they are ALL agenda driven with a dash of hate for liberals or people in general. To accuse others or hating Bush or being Liberal.....what is your point.

I am NOT HAPPY WITH BUSH EITHER. Who could be happy with this President? Who in their right mind thinks there is anything really worthy about this man as a leader. Hey I think he must be a charming man to hang out with, but as a leader, he is the worst president in modern time. He will go down in history as the architect of our nations most disastrous foreign policy of all time.

Who cares?
What does the Pulitzer Prize mean for us? Nothing. It's an industry award to its own insiders, from its own insiders. It's just like the Oscars, the Emmys, the Grammys. None of these awards really reward true skill or quality, they are all highly subjective in their criteria, and so, they mean absolutely nothing, when you get right down to it.

YMML
I am SO HuRT ThaT YoU DOn'T TAkE Me SERioUSly!

By the way
You said spew a few too many times.

Are you Kimbat or Phylo?

YMMwonderhowyoucanbesostupid
Cynthia Tucker has called GWB a liar countless times in her hate spewing columns, which remarkably are similar to your juvenile pap. Leave FACTS to the grownups and go back to your sandbox.

andrews
I can see your point, but the fact remains that there have been a few prominent conservatives such as Buckley and Novak that have been ignored by the leftist Pulitzer Prize committee over the decades. I think, as Bozell argues, that the horse is the leftist committee and the cart is the overwhelming number of liberal columnists, rather than the other way around.

btw, in no way did I mean to imply that you're defending the Pulitzer YMML-jetpilot groupie committee; you're not. Sorry.

Pee-U-Litzer
I came to this realization many years ago. The Pulitzer Prize is so much overblown nonsense just as the Oscars are. The liberals who participate in this are a lot of back slapping folks who are full of themselves.

I find it hilarious when the journalists pride themselves on their skill even when they are only giving half of the story, a distorted story, outright lies, or spew hatred and then have the audacity to call it good journalism. They call it "hard hitting" which is code for "below the belt." They call it "in-depth analysis" which is code for "I made it up." They call it "journalism" which is code for "propaganda."

Their version of analysis would never pass the test from a scientific point of view. They never seem to understand that it is verboten to fit the data to pre-determined conclusions. They always think it's okay to make fallacious arguments just because they want it that way.

Please pass the barf bags.

Where are The Pulitzers For:
The investigators who broke Abscam?

The investigators who covered The Keating 5?

The investigators who covered Chinagate?

The Investigtors who covered the House Check Kiting Scheme?

There are non, because none of the MSM would touch any of those scandals.

Inconvenient Truths
Bozell claims that Charlie Savage's Pulitzer for stories about Bush's signing statements " indicates that heavy usage of a story on left-wing publicity machines like Air America and the Huffington Post apparently wins you major Pulitzer considerations." No, it indicates that Savage is a good investigative reporter who did what good investigative reporters are supposed to do. The mainstream media had largely ignored this important story---one with profound impllications for Americans concerned about the erosion of constitutional governance. Savage and the Boston Globe did us all a service by digging out facts that all Americans---regardless of how they feel about signing statements---should know about.

I suspect that Mr. Bozell's comment about Savage is an example of an unfortunate tendency among some conservatives to ignore or lash out at "inconvenient truths."

Joe Rolled Over in His Grave
When I was a kid, I had a lot of respect and awe for the winners of the Nobel Prizes, Pulitzer Prizes, and Oscars. I watched the latter every year with bated breath. [I also voted for Miss Rheingold] For they were all awards for excellence in my young eyes.

As I grew older [past 12], I realized that there were a lot of somethings wrong with these awards. [Of course, not the Miss Rheingold election---that was one of real consequence.] Reality grew on me slowly---but it did grow. And now, I see so much Liberal crap tied up into these awards---well, they are virtually worthless in my estimation. C'mon now! An award of excellence for Al Gore?

Now, we know that a lot of Liberals get these awards for being Liberal and promoting Liberal propaganda. Can't refute that. Do a little research, and you'll find the processes disgustingly unfair and slanted with just that result.

I've tried to watch, listen to, or read columns and articles by some of these prominent Liberals: Cynthia Tucker; William Raspberry; Michael Moooore; Maureen Dowd; Al Frankenstein; Ellen Goodman; Anthony Lewis; Tom Wicker---and of course those delightfully sensitive whackos on the radio, Don Imus and Howard Stern.] I can't do it. They turn me off very quickly with the misinformation, assumption of divinity, vitriol in their hate of anything Republican or Conservative [or in some cases, common decency], and basically poor or gutter-like writing or communicating skills. And they're often hypocrites. Remember when William Raspberry wrote columns that promoted gun control and getting all guns off the street and out of the hands of citizens? It was shortly thereafter that he was arrested for having an unlicensed gun in his possession---and of course, he was released quickly with a slap on the wrist, and the story was conspicuously missing from the Liberal Press after the first, small print revelations. [I imagine if he had been a Conservative columnist, we'd still be hearing and reading about it.]

Liberal Mantra: do what I say, not what I do. And the mantra is normally written by its propagandists in many forms. I just went over to Daily Kos---soiling my mind---and found little there but the usual vitriol against Bush and the Republicans and---oh yes, some reporting of rumors in an attempt to find someone [other than the shooter] to blame for the VA Tech tragedy.

Yes, Liberals do, as a rule, write nonsense, and they shouldn't be awarded anything for it. Some see an improvement in their grammar and basic skills as the years progress---but most don't. I wouldn't even give them an 'A' for effort because they usually fall flat in truth and reality.

I found out today an Australian scientist claims that cremation is causing global warming [the furnaces, you know] and we should bury our dead in cardboard boxes underneath trees so the decomposing bodies can nourish them to great heights. I can just see Uncle Fred's countenance budding on a hundred branches. Oooohhh! Anyway, isn't there a scientific award just for him? [The scientist, not Uncle Fred.] The Al Gore Award for Scientific Accuracy? Or the Michael Moooore 'Truth' in Liberal 'Science' Award?

One poster claims that, since the left controls the awards, left wing writers should be winning most of them. Well, the last time I checked, being a Liberal [in its current or recent manifestation] was not among the original criteria for any of these awards. As I remember it, the word "Excellence" was always bandied about. And there aren't any Liberals of excellence---or at least I haven't come across any. Propaganda is NOT excellence. So again, why no excellent Conservative writers in the chase? Too sane for the judges?

I once owned a book store, and after Maya Angelou won the Pulitzer prize, I tried to read her book of poems and autobiography. They are unreadable, uninteresting, and definitely not worth the time invested. I found the same problems with other Liberal authors---whose books never sold.

Let's get back to 'excellence' instead of 'ideology' as the basis for awards. And, personally, I think my blog should receive and award from Joe Pulitzer or somebody. At least it's not Liberal.

Boz
Who is it again? You know, the party of victimhood? Try not to bleed all over yourselves.

You make my hysterical
Can't you get a date and go see some smarmy, artsy movie like "Little Miss Sunshine" where the typical family has a porno-loving, drug-using grandfather who teaches his granddaughter the great art of stripping, an uncle who can't successfully commit suicide over being rejected by his gay would-be lover, and a father that --natually -- owns a Volkswagen '60s van which only runs when pushed downhill and get off this site? What a masochist!

Can conservatives even GET the job?
Like university teaching posts, journalist jobs are limited to the applicants' political persuasion.

Because the hiring is controlled by the 'loopy left', no 'rapacious right' applicant will get the job.

And who says there should be no litmus test? Oh yeah, that's the mantra of the loopies - except when it comes to hiring those on (IN?) the right.

Hey, now...
Boy, this thing sure got personal in a hurry. I can't understand the personal attacks. I mean they add nothing to the discourse that is supposed to be going on here.

Let's look at signing statements. One poster implied that they are unconstitutional. Well, are they? Has any court ruled that they are unconstitutional? Has any other president used them? Is the hatred simply because Bush uses them "too much"? If they are unconstitutional, file a lawsuit and bring it to court.

I've read commentary by both liberals and conservatives. Typically if I put the "facts" from both columns together I can come up with a pretty good picture of the truth and where both "sides" come down on an issue.

Unfortunately, there are very few people that present all of the pertinent facts, especially in print. The reason for this is that all of the facts won't necessarily support the position of the writer. I understand this, really, I do. In a debate, I would never give ammunition to the "other side", rather I would hold it back and formulate some rational response in case my opponent brought it up.

I find some of the columns on TH rather trite and irritating, however, I haven't seen anything on KOS or HuffPost that is any better (usually worse). Of course, I do like to think for myself after researching and evaluating the evidence at hand. Maybe that is the problem, too many read too few pieces with an open mind.
