Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The hubbub raised over six Islamic imams being removed from a US Airways flight in Minneapolis for suspicious behavior is the latest in a string of incidents underlining one consistent thread in the war on terror: Muslim terrorists have never given up on the tried-and-true idea of hijacking airplanes and blowing them up to kill and demoralize the infidels.

Police and witness reports suggest a list of suspicious activities and remarks. Some of the imams were discussing in Arabic about "bin Laden" and condemning America for "killing Saddam." Imams asked for seat belt extenders for the extremely obese, for no apparent reason. (Did you know such extenders even existed?) The imams spread out at all exits of the plane, two in front, two in the middle, two in the rear. Between the six imams, they had one piece of checked luggage.

There have been some seriously frightening moments since 9-11. Just a few months later, foiled "shoe bomber" Richard Reid was arrested on board American Airlines Flight 63 from Paris to Miami for attempting to light explosives hidden in his shoes. In court, he declared his allegiance to Osama bin Laden and was convicted in 2003 and sentenced to life in prison.

On March 5, 2003, Fazal Karim, an illegal immigrant from Pakistan, attempted to board an American Airlines flight from Dallas to Houston when screeners found in his luggage 32 razor blades concealed within a box containing a coiled belt. He was convicted of attempting to conceal weapons and making false statements about his immigration status, and sentenced to five years in prison.

On June 29, 2004, journalist Annie Jacobsen complained about the very suspicious behavior of a group of Middle Easterners during a flight from Detroit to Los Angeles. When the plane landed, they were detained, and though the Department of Homeland Security would later report that they were a band of Syrian musicians en route to a gig in Las Vegas, Jacobsen learned that DHS also decided to classify the entire report. Why classify it if nothing was amiss?

On Aug. 10, British authorities thwarted a plot to simultaneously blow up 10 aircraft heading to the United States using explosives smuggled in luggage, averting what police described as "mass murder on an unimaginable scale." Some plotters had already purchased tickets on a flight to stage a test run, with an actual attack planned for days later.

The national media have certainly paid attention to airline security issues since 9-11. But they can't be expected to learn about and report every airline disruption, especially if no real act of terror occurs. Thus it begs the question: How many times, at how many airports, have there been these kinds of incidents that have not made it to the news desks? I ask because I've been a witness to one such incident, from a distance of perhaps three feet, which never made it on the news.

On Oct. 14, I was in Grand Rapids, having boarded United 5832 to Chicago. It was one of those smaller commuter jets with two seats on either side of the aisle. The flight was perhaps one-third full, giving sardined passengers the opportunity to move to the multiple open rows after the boarding process was complete. That's when I noticed the two men, one a younger Muslim, the second an older black man, make their way from the back to the two seats behind the bulkhead on the right side of the plane, one row in front and across from me.

Odd. If they wanted more breathing room, why were they choosing to sit together again in crammed quarters, given all the open rows? Why did they move at all? And if they remained together because they needed to visit, why didn't they exchange a single word? I watched them as they just sat, staring straight ahead. And the plane also just sat by the gate, for a good 15 minutes.

And then the hatch flew open and a half-dozen DHS/FBI agents rushed in, surrounded these two men and, flashing badges, ordered them off the plane.

Now stop for a minute. Imagine you were one of these two, and you were innocent. What would be your reaction if suddenly confronted by a small army of heat-packing federal agents demanding your removal? You might literally jump out of your seat in surprise. What? Me? Huh?! Why? What's going on?! What'd I do? What's the meaning of this? And the like. And that's when it really got creepy.

I watched as the two men stood up and, without a word, without a shred of emotion on their faces, calmly accompanied the agents off the plane. How else to explain this? They were expecting their detention.

The pilot would take to the intercom a few minutes later to explain what he could. Homeland Security had been running background checks on these two, and while nothing had registered on the computers, the flight crew was "just uncomfortable" -- as they had every reason to be.

Something is happening out there. And it's not good.

Pilots should be armed.
This would have saved us with 9-11, and would save passengers hours of indignity with baggage checks.

Pilots and
passengers should be armed. Everyone with holsters on their hips, guns in sight.
Message: Don't mess with us.

Just pass out seat belt extenders
to anyone who requests them, and then teach passengers to stare unblinkingly at anyone who looks suspicious. (People with younger children, please teach the rest how to do this effectively) holding the seat belt extenders in their hands and snapping the buckles suggestively.

Place the nimble on the aisles with unfolded blankets at the ready to fling over the heads of any of the suspicious passengers who makes a sudden move.

Make sure that these people stay in their seats for the entire duration of the flight, by making them too nervous to dare make a move.

There is nothing illegal about this. It could actually be fun.

Airport and Air Plane Safety
These incidents bring to mind a problem that I reported to gate agents at Chicago's Midway A/P a few years prior to 9/11.

While enduring a number of delays and gate changes on a very busy Friday afternoon, I couldn't help but notice a passenger who appeared to be paying extra special attention to his soft-sided valise. The type lawyers use to carry their wares.

This middle-thirties male was dressed normally and looked to be on the academic side of the civilian spectrum. I recall that it was a rather chilly day, so everyone was wearing a heavy jacket or coat.

The subject placed the valise on the floor between his feet. Strangely, he unbuckled and opened it, but didn't reach into it to take anything out. He just peered into it, as if examining something inside, and after a minute or two, he closed it up again.

The first time this action occurred I thought nothing of it, but after changing gates and observing this activity again at the newly assigned gate, I began to pay attention as he began to increase the frequency of this strange activity: opening, peering and closing. Not one time was any object withdrawn from the valise.

After yet another delay and another gate change, I paid specific attention to this individual and positioned myself where I could better observe. Recall, please, that this was prior to 9/11.

At this point, we were into a 90 plus minute delay with little hope of departing the windy city at all that day. We heard the announcement that a new crew had been assigned because the prior crew would have exceeded their daily work-hours. The new crew was scheduled to arrive within 30 minutes after which we would apparently be processed for the flight.

The subject was checking the valise every few minutes and, again, didn't put in or take out anything. Now, this was extremely suspicious! So much so that I made my attempt to get a look inside the valise myself.

Timing my move to coincide with the subject's opening of the valise, I made a quick move when he reached for the buckle. He was seated in the second seat of row that ran through the middle of the gate area, so it was relatively easy to be inconspicuous on my quest.

The object of interest, inside the valise, was an orange colored lump of a putty-like substance. It was as large as a cantalope and appeared to be contained in a plastic bag that was open. Could this have been something a reader of Tom Clancy novels would suspect was Semtex? The Plastic Explosive so common to terrorist acts? I couldn't detect, during my fast pass, anything else: metallic, wires, weapons or clock-timers. But alarms bells went off.

The gate agents and authorities needed to know about this now. Of course, they weren't anywhere to be seen, so I hunted them down and told them about my observations. I also told them that if when the boarding call was made and this individual was permitted to board the plane, I would not stay on that plane.

I didn't return to the gate area until the flight was finally called 45 minutes later. The subject wasn't in the gate area and he wasn't on that plane.

Nobody said anything or made mention of the incident. There hadn't been any raucous or even an obvious police presence to indicate that the subject had been placed under investigation. I didn't get any other information except that a flight attendant said, when questioned, that Chicago authorities were investigating.

Peppermint
Amen!

Islam is a Terrorist Organization
Islam is a Terrorist Organization masquerading as a Religion.

We stupidly, under the concepts of diversity and multi-culturalism, have let this 6th century terror ideology organization supported by the State of Saudi Arabia in direct violation of our Constitutions separation of Church and State to build hate spewing America Mosques and Schools. And we Americans are paying for their tax exempt status.

Are we great or what!

We have been infiltrated to the very highest level in our Government as President Bush continues to kiss Saudi A** and deny their world wide financing of the Radical Islamic Ideology.

There is no security
If the security is stopping me and examining my bags, there is no security. You only have people breaking the law (what we used to call the constitution). If I have to undego a through search of my person, there is no security. Why? Because I am not a threat (yet). I do not endorse Islam, I am as much of a WASP as you can get and you can tell from down the block.

So, if security is even looking at me wrong then they either do not know what they are doing or are participating in the sham we think of as airport security. We need people searched and stopped and limited as to what they can do. They are called Muslims because world wide they are the predominent ones responsible for the state of affairs that exist. Everyone else should be left alone as they were in WWII and other conflicts.

Where was Mousaoui
There was to be a fifth hijacking on 9/11 - it was a United jet that pushed back fron the BOS gate, only to return due to a mechanical. When the jetway was attached, three Arab looking men jumped up and ran off the aircraft. this was before any planes had impacted any buildings, so it did not occasion a chase. It is supposed that Mousaoui was to be the fourth member of the cohort, and while he is incarcerated, the other three are still at large and presumably planning a vendetta to absolve themselves of their first failure.

Also, right after 9-11 ...
Our daughter and grandson were awaiting their boarding call at DFW, flying home after Thanksgiving. Our entire family waited with them, and since we were not allowed to go any further into the airport, we sat outside on the floor, cross-legged, talking together to get the last bit of conversation and love into the mix before they left. As we were hugging and talking and laughing, I just happened to look up and there was a middle-eastern man walking down the concourse and he looked directly at me. I looked directly and him and our eyes locked. In my mind, I was saying, "Who are you? Are you my enemy?" His look turned to pure hatred and he walked very slowly before turning his head away.
It was so creepy I have never forgotten it. My daughter said, "Mom, you should have averted your glaze; you're asking for trouble." However, I think he got my message. I think we're all in trouble.

Institute Profiling
Manetta is no longer Secretary of Transportation so we don't have to endure his dogmatic obstruction of racial and ethnic profiling. The simple fact is that profiling is mandated. The high-school level nonsense that air travellers are subjected to now is just an admission that the terrorists have won - the law-abiding citizen is being inconvenienced, humiliated and treated like a criminal - while the logical suspects are treated with religious deference. The time is long past when people should be DEMANDING an end to the political correctness/multiculturalism/diversity mantra that is shoved down our throats. It is NOT a civil rights issue anymore when the only people that engage in repeated examples of this behavior are practitioners of one - and only one relogion - and come from only one portion of the globe.

ARE SEATBELT EXTENDERS WEAPONS?
Can seatbelt extenders be used as weapons? I'm still trying to understand their significance.

JeffreyP
They can indicate the the user has something under his clothes which forces him to use a bigger seat belt. At least that is my understanding,

JeffreyP
They can also be used to choke, strangle, or tie someone's hands together.

Okay, other side of the story
I think we should investigate all suspicious activities by all people on airplanes and I do think that, given the current world situation, we should be monitoring Arabs and Muslims more closely, particularly with regards to transportation.

However, there are people of Arab descent who have been American citizens for generations, who came to this country to get away from the religious persecution of Christians by Muslims in their old countries, who are loyal Americans and would not harm anyone. We need to remember that.

Yes, extra vigilance is necessary, but not hatred, not until someone has been shown to do something wrong. The imans deserved to be removed from the plane because their behavior was scary and inappropriate, but the Arab-looking guy in the airport might simply be reacting to your expression of hatred. If he hasn't done anything wrong, why shouldn't he be angered that you hate him simply for the color of his skin?

Safety on Planes
I recently flew to FL and back (across country) and guess I was lucky, did not really see any arab (muslim) types but it is stupid to check people that are not a threat to this country. I don't mind but check the ones that really look the type, it is time to do some profiling. We have so many illegals here in this country and the dumocrats will make all of them legal including the terrorists. We will never get rid of them because we do no try traitors for treason anymore. Our stupid government will make sure all illegals are legal even though they have broken so many of our laws and they are to be rewarded. That is all BS.

Why...
...were the imams allowed to fly after the incident? It's my understanding that they boarded a Northwest airplane for their return flight. I would think that anyone engaged in such obvious activity would be blacklisted from flying.

Terror in the Skies articles
Annie Jacobsen wrote an outstanding series of articles called "Terror in the Skies" on womenswallstreet.com; she interviewed air marshals, air crews, FBI agents, airline reps, etc. regarding highly suspicious onboard activities on several domestic flights. It's well worth a read to see what the news wouldn't report. In my opinion, it also sheds light on this incident in Minnesota.

Flying - on a Wing and a Prayer
Any flight can be a terrorist's dream.

That is the reason we must not continue worshiping at the altar of political correctness. I was -- and I imagine most of us over 40 were -- brought up to be kind, polite, and to defer to authority when appropriate, which was most of the time.

However, we need to get out of our system the thought that we need to prostrate ourselves before the altar of P.C. to the extent we bend over backwards not to offend a muslim.

Personally, I care not if airport security wishes to wave a wand about my person; I care not if airport security makes a hand search over my clothing (if done appropriately); I care not if airport security paws through everything in my handbag, carry-on bag, paper bag or any other carrier of any items. And I am as far from looking the part of a terrorist as anyone can get -- a grandmother of English-Irish descent -- and my worst weapon may be a withering glance.

This means that I also believe it is appropriate to scrutinize to a fare-thee-well those who do look the part of a terrorist. If we begin to defer to muslims BECAUSE they are muslims, then we have certainly lost the P.C. battle. Let's not do that.
