Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It is beyond easy -- it is mandatory -- to denounce Rep. Mark Foley for his sexually charged electronic mail and Internet messages to teenage males who worked as pages in the House of Representatives. He was right to resign. I hope he's prosecuted.

It is also beyond easy to recognize how the Democrats have decided to make national political hay out of this ugly sex scandal -- as far as we know, a sex talk scandal. On Monday morning, the network news shows were predicting excitedly that this could be a killer issue for Democrats.

"But this is more than just one man's downfall," insisted Matt Lauer on NBC. "It could be a major blow to the Republican Party, desperately trying to hold on to control of Congress in the coming midterm elections." NBC's story then carried angry soundbites from outraged Democrats.

"Any legislative leader that knew ahead of time and did nothing should resign," thundered Rep. Sherrod Brown of Ohio. Then came Illinois' Sen. Dick Durbin pointing the accusatory finger at the GOP leaders: "The fact that they didn't stop him, the fact that they didn't bring in law enforcement -- I think they have to be held accountable." Both ABC and CBS asked Tony Snow on Monday morning whether Republican House leaders should resign.

Stop. Since when have the Democrats ever insisted a politician be held accountable for a sex scandal involving a staffer, let alone the politician's party leaders? Take Durbin. Did he vote on any impeachment counts against President Clinton for perjury or obstruction of justice over Clinton's sexual relations with intern Monica Lewinsky?

Did Democrats -- the party of feminism, the party that hates sexual harassers -- demand accountability when President Clinton was accused of putting Kathleen Willey's hand on his crotch as she asked for a job? Or demand accountability when President Clinton was accused of dropping his pants in front of Paula Jones and asking that state employee to kiss his genitalia?

You know the answers. Let's continue.

Did Democrats -- who must have chortled at the 1996 GOP convention when NBC anchor Tom Brokaw suggested the Republicans don't think much about "women's issues" like rape -- demand answers from President Clinton when Juanita Broaddrick tearfully recounted to NBC in 1999 how Bill Clinton raped and brutalized her in a Little Rock hotel in the late 1970s?

Go beyond Clinton to see the media-Democrat complex and its partisan standards on sex scandals. On Aug. 25, 1989, The Washington Times revealed Rep. Barney Frank's male-prostitution scandal. Frank's lover, Stephen Gobie, ran an illicit gay sex ring out of Frank's home, and Frank fixed his local parking tickets. Did Frank resign? No. Was there a wave of media pressure on this lawmaker with law-breaking going on in his own home? No. He's still in the House today.

The press was equally complicit in the politics of silence. The New York Times and The Washington Post did a few stories on inside pages in August, no partisan disaster. The three networks left a vacuum of silence from Aug. 26 until Sept. 12, when CBS and NBC, but not ABC, mentioned the ethics committee decision in brief, almost meaningless anchor items. Not one ran a full story.

In 1994, news emerged that Democratic Rep. Mel Reynolds had a consensual sexual relationship with Beverly Heard beginning when she was 16. Heard said Reynolds gave her cash at each meeting and supplied her with his pager number and apartment keys. In taped phone conversations, they even plotted group sex with a 15-year-old Catholic high school girl Heard had said wanted to have sex with him.

The infamous Reynolds reply: "Did I win the lotto?" He asked Heard to take photos of the girl's private parts. Reynolds was convicted of criminal sexual assault, obstruction of justice and solicitation of child pornography. The networks barely touched on this story as it broke in 1994, and ended with conviction in 1995, which is why, dear reader, I bet you don't even remember it.

Did the Democrats believe in holding Reynolds accountable? Bill Clinton pardoned him as he left office in 2001. He then went to work as a consultant for Jesse Jackson.

Don't forget 1983, when Republican Rep. Daniel Crane and Democratic Rep. Gerry Studds were censured by the House for sexual affairs with teenage pages (Studds with a male). Crane was defeated in a Republican primary; Studds arrogantly continued in Congress another 13 years.

On July 14, 1983, when the House ethics committee recommended action, ABC's Peter Jennings made sure the viewers at home knew Daniel Crane was a hypocrite, who vowed to stand up for the "God-fearing" people when Congress considered legalizing most sex acts in the District of Columbia. He had no embarrassing old quotes for Studds.

The hypocrisy here is as nauseating as the Foley e-mails.

Waiting for the lefties
to become unglued.

Re: Mel Reynolds. "which is why, dear reader, I bet you don't even remember it." I didn't hear about it the first time.

Hold Dems to account for sleaze culture
Good column. Certainly throw the book at the RINO, because he is a scumbag, but call the Dems to account for the Congress culture that winks at sexual wrongs.

Don't forget the way the media were sympathetic to "Rev" Je$$e Jack$on when he was shown to have fathered a child by a woman other than his wife.

How the Democrats Can End Hypocrisy
La Rochefoucald said, “hypocrisy is the homage that vice pays to virtue.” When hypocrisy disappears, it won’t be because honesty has arrived at last, but because virtue has finally vanished. When nothing is demanded, nothing will be pretended. When there are no more standards to imitate, there will be no more imitations. The end of hypocrisy and the death of virtue are one and the same event.

What a mess.
Yet another conservative columnist/activist to plunge off the cliff.

Michelle Malkin, Bay Buchanan, Tony Blankely and others deserve praise. They haven't done anything courageous by refusing to accept Republican excuses. It's never courageous to stand up for what is right. These conservatives are clearly more principled than Bozell, Hewitt and Limbaugh.

Refusing to acknowledge GOP negligence is costing a lot of columnists their credibility. Downplaying the obvious red flags contained in the EMAILS (forget about the IMs) is a very dangerous indeed.

The Prospective Democrat House Leadeship
The Democrat leadership not only did not force Studds out they elevated him to be a committee chairman. If the Democrats get control of the House Pelosi and every chairman, save one, will have been a member of the House when it promoted Studds.

This is not ancient history. The men who advanced his career are still in charge of the Democrat party. Studds was not just a Democrat leader, he became a leader after his seduction of a page by means of copious quantities of vodka, after he turned his back to the House when his censure was read. The present Democrat House leadership validated Studds' action.

also
Don't forget Little Ted Kennedy and the drowning. Perverted behavior is accepted behavior in the Democrat party.

SWISH!
That swishing sound is the point going right over Buck2's head.

It's okay when libs go wild...
...because they still have the interest of people at heart. Sure, they get media scrutiny...the "light" version. Media must show its "objectivity" but also tires of harping on someone they philosophically agree with.

There goes Kimberly again...
Kimberly

What are you doing on a conservative website? It seems like you are arguing just for the sake or arguing.

Foley the pioneer
In a world where Republicans are rushing to join Democrats worshiping at the temple of secularism, it should not be any surprise that more and more Republicans act like Democrats in their personal lives.

Secularism is the worship of man in general and self in particular. Our country is headed in a direction where Foley will be seen as a martyr for the faith of secularism. Foley embraced the central tenant of secularism, “If it feels good, do it”. Soon people will begin to question whether Foley should suffer for his faith by those “crazy Christians” who are out to impose their values on others.

If it sounds ridiculous to think that Foley could be considered in a favorable light, consider the career of Barney Frank. While Florida is not Massachusetts, each new day brings more converts to the temple of secularism as darkness falls across the land.

Politicians- all the same
Anyone who thinks that politicians belonging to one political party are any less corrupt, unethical, or criminal is either lying to himself or herself or doesn't live in the real world. The biggest difference between the two parties is the image each puts forth. Democrats portray themselves as "sinners, just like you" making it easier to excuse their shortcomings once the news breaks. Republicans love the image of moral superiority that they have created, but that doesn't work so well when a scandal erupts in their ranks. It's a lot easier to go after someone that claims "I'm better than you" when, in fact, they are not. Certainly, the Abramoff scandal touched both parties. It's just a shame that it wasn't a big enough story to result in several hundred members of Congress resigning or being indicted. A fresh start is sorely needed.

Kimberly
Your link and your point are ridiculous. The higher in the hierarchical order is the perpetrator in the scandal, the greater the media attention. Thus, the President of the United States and US Senators will almost always attract more attention than activists, legislative aides, or county commissioners.

The Party of Sleeze is enraged?
I hope they find a way to prosecute Foley to the fullest extent possible. And if it turns out that Speaker Hastert knew about this disgusting stuff further back than just recently he should also resign. Needless to say any future life for Foley is totally ruined whether he spends anytime in prison or not.

The party that proudly stands for abortion, sexual permissiveness (& anything goes) high taxes, government regulation, soft on crime, political correctness, anti-family, anti-religious, anti-Christmas, anti-American, anti-military (cut & run), pseudo-science, pro-homosexual behavior, and anti-basics in education has finally found an issue that may convert to votes in November.

It’s humorous to watch the publicly enraged liberals engage themselves along with their media supporters in their usual pretense of caring for the “children” (Pages) as they make their phony climb to moral high ground. The anti-everything party, (with no solutions to anything), has little else to offer voters other than a political sex scandal, which merely points to their profound desperation to regain their majority. Obscured beneath the expected academy award media performances of the usual liberal spokesman is their real purpose; a return to power.

Hastert never saw even the 2005 emails
After everyone jumped to the conclusion that Hastert did not act decisively after the 2005 emails, Denny clarified with an important point that is being missed amid all the hysteria, even by Tony Blankley this morning.

The PARENTS of the boy did not want the emails released and so NO ONE in Congress saw them initially. Hastert received a complaint from the PARENTS, who declined to reveal the exact content of the emails, but only said that Foley was overly familiar and it made their son uncomfortable and the PARENTS wanted the behavior to stop.

Hastert & Co. asked Foley if he contacted the page. He said "yes". They asked him to stop. He said he would. That's it. No allegations of any other improper contact. No evidence of the exact wording of the email which the PARENTS objected to.

Very reasonable explanation of what happened that will get lost in all the howling and Democrat dirty tricks, aided by a news media that loves hysteria (even Fox).

The real scandal would be if Hastert and the GOP are really hurt by lies and spin but I have faith in the American people to sort out the bs.

Good post Salt
It is good to see someone put the facts out there for all to see, and not rush haedlong into the "Hastert must Go!" camp that seems to be springing up.

And I have one question: Why are we all so suddenly confident of the reporting coming from the MSM on this? I know that the text of the IM's are terrible, but why have we suddenly all bought into the MSM line on the events in question? These are the very people that we usually recognize as politically and ideologically motivated hacks, but on this issue their words are now unassailable? Why aren't we willing to wait and see what really happened before we make up our minds?

Silence
The previous 3 comments may have imposed a long silence from the lefty interlopers.

Kimberly...
Are you really that uninformed or just a typical liberal kool-aid drinker? But you just demonstrated that liberals will go all out to defend sickening behavior when it's a liberal being accused (i.e. Clinton) but become indignant when it's a Republican. Even your ridiculous link was laughable - it would be howe much bigger in describing democrats? 5 times? 10 times?

But for the record, Clinton was found in contempt in a federal court for perjury, disbarred for 5 years in Arkansas and censured from the Supreme Court, as well as settling out of court with this same Paula Jones that "had no case".

RxLady
What Kimberly is doing here is acting as a mole for leftist groups. S/he reads a sentence or two from every column, quickly writes some somewhat german demoncRAT talking points, and then moves on to the next column. You will notice that s/he will not respond to you. S/he does not read our responses.

There is reason to believe that Kimberly and others (e.g. the backwardly-named "Anti-Partisan Righty) are paid moles.

Buck2 and Clarence Thomas
Buck2 stated: "I do believe the Dem's were in fact after Clarence Thomas after allegations of his behavior became public prior to his confirmation. Which means Brent, you might just be a redneck if you continue to think Dem's are the only people capable of hypocrisy. (I would think the Gods and Guns group would be a bit more careful about the friends they choose)."

No, the Dem's went after Clarence Thomas after everything else they tried failed, so they made up sexual harassment charges against him. The charges brought by Anita Hill were ludicrous to the point that Hill was caught several times contradicting her own deposition to the FBI.

The Dem's were not trying to go after someone guilty of sex crimes; they were trying to destroy the reputation of someone who did not agree with them. So who are the hypocrites?

But it is interesting, though, that all these allegations against Republicans always seem to come out right before an election or a confirmation.

Does party allegience really require thi
I well remember the Reynolds case, that resulted in him going to jail for several years. There is a good account in today's Washington Post about how both Republicans and Democrats dealt with the Crane/Studds scandal. That one led to censure.
Except for these cases in which people in power took the charges very seriously, to not laugh at Bozell's account requires pretending that the ages of people involved is unimportant. It is doubtful that he actually believes that it is irrelevant that this scandal involves 16 year old pages under the protection of the House. And yet in writing his column he apparently feels compelled to pretend he does. Does party allegience really require this?

Habeas Corpus
Congress did not suspend habeas corpus for people entitled to that privilege, Kimberly.

Your Al Qaeda heroes are not entitled to the privilege of habeas corpus; deal with it!

Dirt diggers
I will give the democrats credit for one thing, they are very good at digging deep to find any dirt they can against a republican. Then of course revealing that dirt just before an election. Why the republicians do not return the favor is beyond me! The demos must have some excellent detectives on their payrolls to spend full time finding anything negative about a republician politician. If anyone thinks that democratic politicians live at the foot of the cross, I have a bridge for sale rather cheap.

Clean House, NOW !!!
It is now become perfectly clear that the time is now, to clean up our political house. In the upcoming elections, either local, state or national, do not vote to re-elect ANYONE already in office. Period.

If someone is running for office that has never been elected before, vote for them. I don't care if they are republican, democrat or independent. Vote for them, now.

And also, it's time for term limits as well. A maximum of two terms for any one person and then it's someone elses turn. Let's put an end to career politicians. The founding fathers never intended for our government to work that way.

Oh and while we're at it, its time to impeach and remove the Supreme Court justices that voted against the American People and their private property rights in the recent Kelo decision.

come on aboard
Most Dems are hypocrites and so are most Reps. It seems the same can be said for Boswell and most of the commenters. So let’s all take out our fingers and point at the other side. This incident will slowly dissipate until the next incident where it will be brought up in a litany of finger pointing. Don’t ask what Kimberly and the other liberals are doing here. They fit right in with the conservatives like the two sides of the same coin. Instead, ask what I’m doing here.

Abe Lincoln
Hey Abe, Mary Todd just called and said you're late on your medication..............

The Democrats and young boys
The Dems are concerned about the children? The Speaker must go?

Just Google the Boy Scouts of America and Pelosi to see what the Dems think about protecting children from the likes of Mark Foley. They have attempted to destroy the BSA for NOT allowing the gays to be leaders of young boys.
Please! The Dems have one concern - get elected.

Looney Lefties
It would appear from a look at the last several comments that the loonies from moveon.com have arrived.Nothing too subtle about their tirades.

Democrat Party Strategy
RULE OR RUIN

Even if it means destroying the United States as an entity.

This includes sedition and/or outright treason which our present feckless president does not have the huevos to prosecute.

FG
No, we get the subtleties from NRAlifer and basebalder.

Just wait for the implosion....
I can't help but think that this will end up being another Dem overplay, and when all the facts come out, they will end up looking as bad or worse. Then watch how fast this news disappears from the front page, ala:

1. Plamegate
2. Bush rigging high gas prices
3. Forged documents

and so on. Really, these boobs are like my slobbering dog , who in his haste to feed, invariably knocks his dog dish over. Be prepared to hand them the dishtowel so that they can wipe the egg off their collective faces.

One can only hope the truth will be determined in time.

PS.: No, this is not support for Foley!

nors, general macarthur, FG:

Democrats do not see themselves as hypocritical. They, after all, don’t measure Republicans by Democrat standards. On the contrary, they judge Republicans based on conservative values – both real and imagined. When someone in their (Dems) ranks is caught in a moral’s violation – up to and including murder (thank Teddy for lowering that bar) they circle the wagons to protect the perpetrator. Given that Liberal sins can be attributed (by their MSM apologists and others) to illness, disease or some unfathomable nuance, their “indiscretions” at worst are labeled as “victimless crimes.”

OttoZeit your point, “The end of hypocrisy and the death of virtue are one and the same event” is well taken and fairly descriptive of Liberal ideology. When Republicans were made aware of the magnitude of Foley’s misdeeds they wanted the cancer excised immediately. Without delving into the minutiae of what the leadership knew and when they knew it, the fact remains the rank-and-file have agreed with and wanted his removal. In other words, by Republican standards, his conduct was unacceptable and he had to go. On the other hand, Democrats merely hijack conservative virtue whenever it is politically expedient and attempt to commander it into Republican towers. They do not possess a moral compass of their own; their goal and guiding principle is to attain power at any cost.
.

Kimberly:
Apart from every other scandal Billy DropTrou was involved in, his dalliance with Monica was no less egregious. Despite her age, she was nonetheless, an impressionable, star-struck, young female subordinate. Clinton had an opportunity to be a positive influence but chose rather to satisfy his own prurient self-interests. Satiating his cravings ultimately brought ignominy to Monica’s family name and the Office of the Presidency. Find an American (over the age of 25) that doesn’t know what a Lewinsky is? And who can hear the words, “Oval Office” without being reminded of DropTrou’s miscreant behavior and abuse of power? His continued public appearances are more salt in a wound that won’t heal. If he cared half-a-wit for these United States he would disappear from the public arena.

Let's get back on point...
It's interesting, only the first sentence of Mr. Bozell's article refers to the issue, and rather off-handidly at that at: Yeah, go ahead and prosecute him...Now, on to what really interests me...

The rest of his article is devoted to his personal impressions of the political machinations going on on both sides of the aisle. And, unfortunately, he makes that the issue and commits the sin of the media he rails against - deflection. He is guilty of the very nauseating hypocrisy he claims to decry.

It appears politics attracts a representative cross-section of our society - good and bad. Some might argue mostly bad, especially in light of the Foley issue and all the other references to sordid improprieties in Bozell's article. I think the only valid point his article makes is that in a two-party system as ours, there will be alternating occasions for one side to accuse the other side of the very same thing - whatever it is.

Judging by some of the posts to this article, many have already been deflected and caused to respond with knee-jerk rhetoric. This is unfortunate as the real issue artfully dodged by politicians at large is the moral decay and decrepitude of this once great nation - and, yes, that includes every one of us.

Look over your own posts and see the incosistencies in your sentiments, the convenient and uneven moralizations and your fact-less and rigoristic arguments.

We are at fault for voting these clowns into office - Republican and Democrat alike. We are guilty of moralizing when, in fact, we accept what we consider amoral as a practical manifestation of our culture. We insist on a rectitude in our political candidates which we privately could never hope to emulate. We accept what we hear and see without much discerning and are willing to let others tell us what to think, or think about.

Now, there's hypocrisy!

RxLady,
Kimberly is not arguing. She's mindlessly repeating the Dem talking points that she self-indocrinated herself with. Shrinque is right; she rarely responds to anyone. The very few times she has, it was just to repeat more talking points.

Confused!
Boy am I confused! The liberals bash the boy scouts for not letting gay men go camping with little boys and now they are all up in arms over two gay guys ( one 16 years old and one 50 years old) having perverted chats over the internet.

Spot on again
Can someone please tell me why these incidents are not positive arguments for the position of the Boy Scouts? But the dim-witted media are incapable of putting a few stories together and at least confront uncomfortable information and conclusions...it would get in the way of their agenda. They slam the Scouts as being homophobic for taking pre-emptive actions, and slam Hastert for doing nothing. It's so consistent with them. We have too many reporters who are not up to the intellectual demands of their jobs, quite frankly.

Dim-witted media, or...?
Jimbo, I wouldn't be to quick to call the media dim-witted - on this point anyway.

If we take your argument to its logical conclusion we would have to isolate ALL adults from ALL under age children (let's say 16) in settings where their parents are absent. And then what?

In this particular case, and in your post, the reference is to gays. But let's not forget that there are plenty of instances of heterosexual misconduct - e.g. mature adult male v. under-age female. Why let any adult camp out with under age children?

There is also an important distinction between the Foley issue and the boy scouts, which you did not mention: In the case of Foley it appears something DID happen; in the case of the boy scouts it's, so far, supposition. There's a big difference.

camping
I think the confusion with regard to why democrats object to Foley's behavior and yet oppose excluding gays from the boy scouts may be that some people don't realize that camping is not itself perverted. Responsible adults, whether gay or straight can actually spend time with adolescents without acting sexually towards them. In fact they do it all the time.
The general democratic position is that it is wrong for adults, whether male or female, to make sexual advances towards children, whether male or female, particularly when they stand in a position of power over them. It is increasingly (and more disgustingly wrong) as the age of the children decreases and the age of the adult increases.
The mentoring of children by adults, where it is not sexual in nature, though is not a bad thing. Again the sexes of the adult and the child are not particularly relevant here as long as the adult is mature enough to not act sexually towards the child.
Is that really so hard to understand? Attacks on democrats that miss this rather obvious point seem to reflect poorly on the attacker rather than the attacked.

Is anybody there?
Lon, it seems we may have dampened the dialogue by suggesting rational arguments.

Is anybody there...?

what?
Lon writes, camping is not a perverted activity, so does this mean being an intern or page is considered a perverted activity? Perverts are perverts whether in congress or as BSA leaders.

Calm Down Anti-Muhammed
You are obviously angry. Please don't get personal and stick to facts.

You got it backwards: the overwhelming preponderance of abuse cases is of the heterosexual variety.

"In 1992, two physicians reviewed every case of suspected child molestation evaluated at Children's Hospital in Denver over a one-year period. Of the 269 cases determined to involve molestation by an adult, only two of the perpetrators could be identified as gay or lesbian. The researchers concluded that the risk of child sexual abuse by an identifiably gay or lesbian person was between zero and 3.1%, and that the risk of such abuse by the heterosexual partner of a relative was over 100 times greater."

This from the journal Pediatrics, 94(1), July 1994, pp. 41-44.

And be specific: What judge wants to lower the age of consent to 12 so that younger pages can be raped?

So I guess that settles that!
Once we get past the bombast and the vitriol, and the knees have stopped jerking, we can calmy, rationally deal with the facts and get back on point:

Republican or Democrat, Mark Foley's conduct is reprehensible. It is also his personal conduct and not a reflection of the morality or values of his party (at least I don't think so).

However, the real issue is the fact that with, at the very least, suspicions swirling about Foley and his conduct since 2001, he was urged by the Republican leadership to seek re-election for at least the last two terms, and was made Co-chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children Caucus!

And then, why do so many of you defend a passel of incumbents that is at least disingenuous, certainly incompetent and ignoble?
