"Little House" of horrors

Students of history know that over the millennia, great civilizations crumbled not from without, but from within. The Visigoths may have crushed the Romans in A.D. 476, but long before the Roman Empire had begun to disintegrate internally, its social fabric slowly shredded apart -- and ultimately it became a paper tiger unable to sustain itself. In our own lifetime, it's quite apparent that we are witnessing an increasingly rapid and equally worrisome descent in the moral mean.

Here's one spectacular, depressing example. In the 1970s, one of the most celebrated family shows on TV was "Little House on the Prairie." One of NBC's most durable series, its audience would trounce today's television "hits" because back in those days, "family" TV shows were watched by the family, not just the youngest offspring.

The lead role was played by Michael Landon, but the show also gave rise to another star, the gawky, pig-tailed child named Melissa Gilbert as Laura Ingalls, or "Half-Pint," as she was lovingly called by Pa Ingalls. In recent years, she has starred mostly on family friendly shows like "Touched by an Angel" and "7th Heaven."

Perhaps this is a classic example of how pathetically low our society's morals have fallen in 25 years: Melissa Gilbert just guest-starred on the FX cable network's grotesque show "Nip/Tuck." Are you ready for this? As a woman needing to have a nipple replaced ... because her dog bit it off ... during sex.

I'm not kidding. I wish I were.

It was somehow not enough to have a little light fun of sex with a cow (ABC's "Boston Legal"), or sex with a horse (on Fox's "Keen Eddie") or even violating a parrot with a finger (on the aptly named UPN show "Shasta McNasty"). Now it's bestiality with the family dog as the punch line. Lassie and Rin-Tin-Tin, be glad you're dead.

Gilbert's husband returns home from Iraq to discover his wife is enraptured with a whole new definition of "puppy love." He screams at her in disgust that he failed to expect she would turn into a "faithless, demented whore," a special breed of floozy to be sure, given she used peanut butter to seduce the family pooch into the sack.

To complete the circle of sleaze, the husband vengefully dumps the dog, now a lifeless heap, out of a duffel bag in front of her. This being a graphic show about surgery, we see -- we have to see -- Gilbert's bare breast (albeit covered by a plastic wound) as they prepare her for a new nipple.

Why did she do this? Is the "wholesome" tag such a scarlet letter in today's Tinseltown that it requires this level of penance? Perhaps there's even more to it. Until recently, Gilbert was president of the Screen Actors Guild, which has fought proposals to strengthen protections against televised indecency. Gilbert couldn't have taken a more public stand (in this case, in the prone position) than this disgusting stunt.

"Nip/Tuck," television's most overwrought sleazefest, is beginning its fourth season of plastic surgery and gaudy immorality with a load of new guest stars clamoring for seats on the bandwagon, but the same perverse drive to shatter every barrier of good taste. It's so graphic, violent and sexually repulsive that one prison banned its inmates from watching it. But it's available to millions of impressionable children on the cable or satellite TV systems in their homes.

And TV critics continue to applaud every new outburst of wickedness. The Hartford Courant has raved that "no show has been as consistently audacious, finding the very edges of taste and acceptance each week and using every power of its extended cable status to leap beyond them." The Palm Beach Post lovingly described it as a "shocking, sexy, graphic, funny, wildly over-the-top, I-can't-believe-what-I'm-watching drama."

They aren't looking for artistic excellence. They are looking for the fastest path to subversion, a rollercoaster ride to the depths of excess. "Nip/Tuck" can meet them there with great enthusiasm.

Up next on "Nip/Tuck" is Rosie O'Donnell, and it wouldn't be worth the guest-starring role without Rosie's character having sex with Dr. Christian Troy, the show's stud muffin. TV Guide has already spurred O'Donnell to recount the filming of the "absolutely hilarious" sex scene, how the actor playing Dr. Troy was naked except for a sock and she decided to go topless, and how her lesbian partner loved watching every minute.

And Hollywood's loving it. "Nip/Tuck" creator Ryan Murphy is popular enough that he's preparing another project for FX called "4 oz.," named for the average weight of a flaccid penis. It's a drama about a transsexual sportswriter with a wife and two teenage sons. There's no cast yet, but he claims his phone "is ringing off the hook" from A-list stars who he says shall remain nameless. The wages of preposterous sin are rich indeed in today's Hollywood.

Okay, I get it...
...you don't like Nip/Tuck. I don't either, but I also do not spend my time following every depraved storyline and guest star on the show.

Did you ever stop to think that if you didn't bring the show up so much, that maybe some of the publicity would die down? I mean, it isn't the greatest threat to the republic that we face right now...so lets stop pretending that one show on cable television is the death knell of the republic, okay?!

Oh yeah, maybe Melissa Gilbert decided to do a guest spot on the show because she is tired of being seen as either the Lifetime movie victim, or as little Laura Ingalls. I have to think that after a while it has to get a bit frustrating to be seen as a character you played when you were eight!

No shame
When we were a mostly Christian nation, our public pursuits centered around an elevation of what was true. We might have disagreed with each other about which religious or political ideal was best and true, but we did agree that truth was important.

We have a new principle driving our society today. We care less for truth than we do for feeling good. The pursuit of feeling has many forms. This pursuit has one characteristic whose name is taken from one type of this pursuit, the “narcotic” effect. Essentially the narcotic effect says that to get the same level of stimulation, you need increasing frequency or intensity to produce the same effect.

When people get habituated to some level of perversity, they will seek out more perverse sources of stimulation. This path is well established by those who pursue alcohol and drugs. It should not be surprising that those captivated by TV would be led down a similar sexual path. What is tragic is that it is the youth of our country whose parents have abandoned them to public school and television that are being led by the Pied Piper of sexual perversity.

There is no governmental program to fix this problem. Western Civilization arose out of the moral filth that filled the world back when people started turning to Jesus 2,000 years ago. Now that we are so quickly turning our back on Him who saved us, we are returning to that natural state of immorality and decadence. However, there is still hope, the light of the world is Jesus.

Maybe not the biggest, but still big
Some wise person said,"The problem with Capitalism is capitalists; the problem with Socialism is Socialism." What that means to me is that while Socialism is systemically wrong, capitalism require virtue on the part of capitalists, just as our polity, as Adams said repeatedly, requires virtue of the citizens.

Flagwaver, no offense, your complaint sounds just a little like the Dems saying the War on Terror is responsible for terrorism. When corporations decide to compete for ratings by celebrating depravity, when actors compete for a chance to expose and disgrace themselves, and when the public at large responds to this with a yawn, that's when we get presidents who sodomize the hired help with cigars and a party of his supporters whose only unshakable principle is that no one should interfere with their alleged right to commit infanticide.

Bozell (and Medved, et al) do a good and important job of letting us know how the self-appointed formers of the culture are trying to rip the heart out of this country and turn our daughters into tramps and our sons into lascivious perverts. I don't blame the burglar alarm for burglary or Bozell for calling our attention to this filth.

what the muslim terrorists embedded among us think of us when they see this kind of garbage? They probably think that what they are doing is what we need and deserve.

As for the point about us destroying ourselves from within - sad but true. Those who do not read history are doomed to repeat it.

But if you are watching mtv all the time and the teaching of history is no longer compulsory what can you really expect?

as a survivor of the 60s and as a c.o.f. (certified old f...) I cannot help getting the impression over and over that we are reaping what we sewed in that decade. We went too far - way too far.

"Boundaries were broken.!" Very true, but maybe there were boundaries that were there because they were SUPPOSED to be there. They were there because they were NEEDED.

I fall into the same catagory...born in the 40's ...blah, blah....I couldn't agree MORE! I am a female even though my blog is bennyboy. My husband and I feel the same re these 'depraved shows'. We just don't watch them.

WE JUST CAN'T BLAME HOLLWOOD
Yes it is easy to blame Hollywierd for these type's of shows and the sick topics that are covered, but equally guilty are all the sickos who actually spend their time watching these programs. The even sicker side of this story is that parents are probably watching these mindless programs with their children sitting right next to them. If your one of these parents who are guilty of this, knock it off!

Freedom of CHOICE
As several posts have mentioned so far, if you don't like something on television then don't watch it. The last thing anyone here in America needs to be doing is telling another adult what they can watch, read or listen to because someone finds it offensive. And as far as kids go, I really don't care what is on television since it is up to PARENTS to determine what is appropriate and monitor exactly what their children are watching. And parental locks have been on cable boxes for a decade. If parents are unwilling to perform these duties, then they have no one to blame but themselves.

I in no way have tried to blame Bozell for bringing attention to the show. I simply pointed out that Brent seems to be just a tad bit...obsessive about this one show.

Like I said before, I personally don't care for the show but it is not my job to tell everynes else not to like it, or to condemn an actor for appearing there. If an actor chooses to appear there, they will deal with the negative or positive consequences of it.

I still say that Nip/Tuck is not the end of the American society. I am old enough to remeber when people were making the same charges against "The Simpsons" and "Married With Children"; how they were corrupting the youth of America and coarsening our character. What people need to realize is that if thre was no market for these shows, they wouldn't be on the air! The shows are not shaping society so much as they are reflecting the changing tastes of society. Maybe we should be spending a bit more time trying to figure out why people are so accepting of the shows, what has happened to our culture instead of blaming Nip/Tuck for dragging us down. The show is not dragging us down, it is simply reflecting where we already are!

As for the constant complaints about how entertainment media is debasing our society, didn't the English aristocracy say the same thing about the works of Shakespeare? Now, i'm not saying that Nip/Tuck is comparable to the Bard of Avon; but I am saying that no amount of entertainment media can destroy our nation. If our nation falls it will be because we did not take responsibility for ourselves because we were a bit too busy blaming others for the breakdown of society.

Brent and Medved do a good job in combating the bad influences, and pointing out how the media influences society. But when it comes down to brass tacks, it is our responsibility to live clean, moral lives and give a hand to those trying to do the same. It is not our job to force people to come along with us if they don't want to. To do so seems a lot like the liberal strategy of enforcing the rule of the minority over the majority.

Liberty has become license
"The price of liberty is eternal vigiliance"

That phrase has commonly been used to denote attention to defense against threats from outside our borders.

But I think it also applies to threats from within, particularly those that would destroy us through cultural degradation or social divisiveness.

That does not mean I'm advocating censorship, particularly over such puerile drivel as this show. But application of social and economic pressures, such as shunning or boycotts are, I think, appropriate.

Further, instilling of values in the next generation is paramount. A check of the historical records will show that most of the great civilizations of the past (Greece and Rome come to mind) ultimately failed because their cultures lost cohesion, suffered a decline in values, and became weak, leading to their ultimate downfall.

To use another quote: "we must all hang together, or we will surely hang seperately".

I have only a limited experience with
this brand of TV programing as it is not shown on my home TV. Nor will it be.

But I can't watch Lifetime "movies'" either. They are such adolescent repetitive scrip junk. Equally insulting to the mind as Rosie O'Donnel's sad life. [Just looking at her expressions tell me the story of her personal and unfortunately not private agony]

So I suggest you let your mind relax and your sense of Justice renew itself. Watch "COPS" and "Forensic Files". If those get into reruns you can turn to the Military or History channels. Although you will still be subjected to the now terribly annoying twice hourly Countrywide Home Loan commercials on every channel, your spirit will be lifted.

Somehow watching the, sometimes terminally, stupid, criminal, evil and dictatorial of our world get their fanny kicked to the dirt refreshes my Soul.

In a recent episode of COPS a DUI stop was made and the defendant was asked if he had anything to say. His response was "I need a beer".

How can it get any better than that?







As it was in the days of Lot...

The mantra of
-the sweaty-palmed, glassy eyed hippies of the 60's was, "if it feels good, do it." Drugs were cool and community sex made a a mockery of the biblical urging to love thy neighbor. The exemplar of that philosophy was a draft dodger who was elected President of the U.S. in '92 & '96, was impeached, and despite being a convicted perjurer and stealing the silverware when he left office, walked away with a 62% approval rating.

The sad thing is that if he were eligible to run again for the Presidency, he'd win in a cake walk. That should tell us something about what we've become as a nation.

Take it easy on Mr. Bozell!
Several commenters have told Mr. Bozell that he has the option of turning off the show if he doesn't like it. However, Mr. Bozell is simply doing his job as head of the Media Research Center, alerting the country about the level of depravity out there. So I recommend that readers of his column appreciate what he's doing -- he's not just a griping busybody. And if you don't like it -- just don't read the column!

How times have changed
As a railroad history nut, I was watching a DVD about the transition from Steam Locomotives to Diesel Locomotives.
Fascinating stuff for me.
But what struck like a sledgehammer was the fact that UP UNTIL THE LATE 1960s ALL NEW AUTOMOBILES WERE SHIPPED IN OPEN TRI-LEVEL AUTO RACKS.
You could get sneak peeks at the new cars before they hit the showrooms if you stood by the tracks long enough late in the year when freights were roaring by with trainloads of new cars.
NOW, THANKS TO THE PRECIOUS LITTLE BRATS WHO CAN DO NO WRONG AND LBJ'S "GREAT SOCIETY," WHERE EVERYBODY IS A VICTIM AND NOBODY HAS ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANYTHING, ALL AUTOS ARE SHIPPED IN ENCLOSED CARS DUE TO THE LITTLE ROCK-THROWING YOU-KNOW-WHATS.

Now I know why I've never watched the show...and never will! Thank goodness we have the Discovery and History channels - I'll even watch someone redo a home or garden before I'll turn to the so-called reality shows...what a joke! If that is reality, then we are, indeed, doomed!

Look within, conservatives
First, I don't watch any of the garbage mentioned by Bozell or anyone else who has posted. In our house, the History channels, Discovery, Science Channel, and a very few comedies are our common TV fare.

Second, we have to face facts. The companies that profit from TV shows are run by businessmen and benefit the shareholders. In short, capitalism is at work here. A consumer demand exists, and the corporations respond with a supply of products. These shows would not exist without an audience. No one is coerced into watching, and no advertiser is coerced into running ads for his products on the shows. In all this, Milton Friedman could not want a better demonstration of the free market at work.

Conservativs, your real argument is with the fact that the free market is inherently an amoral market. Serious thought should provoke a critical look at the naive faith in capitalism shared by almost all conservatives. Capitalism will not preserve traditional morality, and guardians of this morality--which conservatives are and ought to be--cannot simply endorse the free market as they so often do.

I agree with the basics of your argument as to how we got the TV we are getting now and it's an amoral market indeed.

However this conservative/libertatian lending guy never dreamed of a naive faith in a "Moral Free Market." In fact just the word free suggests, implies, indicates, signals, and denotes open choice.

Just as a youngster you quickly learn that life is not 'Fair', nor is it moral. And you cannot force it to be. However you can choose to be moral in your life, or not.

While conservatives appear to be in the lead of running moral lives, it is by far not a universal trend even among them. However if you do not endorse a free market then you leave open the not-so-free market. Ultimately becoming the Nanny State or Orwell's 1984.

I'll chose the TV I watch and pass junk by. But I do think the public airwaves are making a lot of folks a lot of money and it isn't for the public benefit. Put aside the insulting gross junk, you would think we could at least limit the minutes of ads per hour to 6 minutes!








Turned off after 2 minutes
I had some facial surgery a few years back and was intrugued by the name of the show...sat down and was expecting something entertaining but realized REAL soon that this was not a family show or even something you would watch alone.
Dark and nevarious is what I called it and turned it off 2 minutes after understanding what was going on. That on/off switch...it is a BEAUTIFUL thing!

The No Talent talents in Hollyweird
It is no surprise that there are shows like "Nip/Tuck", and "Temptation Island" [fortunately gone from the scene]. After all, it is easier to jump out of the 117th floor of the Trade Center and arrive at a conclusion rather quickly, but darned harder to do a human fly and get to the 117th in the same amount of time. So with Hollyweird's writers, directors, etc. Making Nip/Tuck is easy; sleaze comes quickly to the natural man. creating a series showing people struggling with life's issues and solving them by some higher means than sex is difficult for people whose god is their bellies.
Most of these people have no idea of what a man like Laura Ingalls' father was really like, or, for that matter, John-Boy Walton. And they don't care. They think these people lived by rules that have been, thankfully, discarded as some troglodyte from the 19th century. They think jumping from one bed to another, one wife to another, is normalcy. They are incapable of making shows like these and especially in the 21st century where pleasure is the guiding principle.
I refrain from watching tv shows whose only goal is sexual titillation. It is sad that Melissa Gilbert felt the need to be on this show degrading herself below sewer-level with bestiality as the soup-de-jour. Another casualty of the sexual revolution is Charlotte Church, who has become nothing more than the queen of sk**k-dom, and an anti-Catholic bigot. Strange to say, but Britney Spears looks like Mother Theresa compared to these two.
Is it any wonder we smell bad to the devotees of the religion of peace?

I am tending to agree with Tombo777. My opinion has long maintained that the "other" half of the world hates us for the very reason he states...the Madonna's, and Britany Spears' of the world appear to the others as the norm for American life. I feel that they do not speak, or in any way are they like, myself and my family. Unfortunatley, the good wholesome youth of this country gets very little 'play' to the rest of the world. GOODNESS does not sell at the box office...I have been watching some of the OLDER movies on the TV and come away with the sorrow that we, as a society, indeed have decended into a whirlpool of filth and demented young. THe news, this week, has centered itself around high school shooting of horrible proportions. This is all coming from what these young people watch on the tv, listen to on the ipods and, this is a big one, the lack of a caring family to come home to. Dinner and conversation with the family hardly exists and so our young content themselves with the degenerate garbage they are assaulted with daily. We have messed up our young by allowing the TV to baby sit...there is, surly, a TV in every room of the house. I am no scholar, but those are my thoughts...someone with more power than we have here needs to step in the improve what we allow on the screen..but then what will the ACLU start yelling about...freedom of_________(fill in the blank.) We are in a mess, ladied and gentlemen..we are in a huge mess.

Gay ideology is the problem

The filth you talk about can be attributed by the acceptance of the Gay Community in America as Normative. Most of these filthy shows have Gays writing, producing and directing them. I knew it was coming but bestiality already is scary.

I draw on my premise with a foundation of a pamphlet promoted by Gays and given to Brookline Mass. Students not long after Gay Marriage was approved. Gays I presume will push the limits to sex with infants.

Nip/Tuck
Now I am a fan of this show, say what you will about me. I can understand most of your feelings for nostalgia for time gone by, but the world is a different place thant it was 40 or 50 years ago. It seems to me that alot of you are afraid of change, you want things to stay how they were, but that is not possible in todays 24/7 environment. You as consumers have the right to choose what you do and do not watch as well as control what your children watch, the fact is there are more people who would like to watch this show and those like it than there are of you who despise this show.

Thru the progression of time all things must change and so do peoples tastes as far as entertainment. Is the show sick and depraived yes but that does not mean there is anything inheirntly wrong with it. After all it is ONLY tv it is fiction just a story thats it. I mean in Hamlet for example there was just as much depravity as there is in most shows today. You have adultry, murder etc, yet that is some how viewed differently it is some how not as vulgar to your sensibilities.

While some of you may view me as some kind of god-less liberal I am in fact a conservative, a libertarian to be exact. I see nothing wrong with movies and music and tv today, yes I am young 27 to be exact and things have greatly changed in that time as I can tell from watching cartoons and afternoon programing when I have time off but the biggest problem today is not the music or the movies or the media it is the parenting.

You can not blame the entertainment industry for putting on things you find offensive since you are within your own rights to watch or not watch what ever program you find offensive just like I can read or not read this column. Besides there are a lot of much worse things out there than this one show and while you or I may not like it we have no RIGHT to stop people from producing it.

I agree with you totally. Homosexuals hate everything that reminds them that they are living in contempt for God.
They seek to destroy society by brainwashing people, especially our youth, against the relationships ordained by God, the nuclear family of one man and one women, MARRIED, and rearing offspring together in a manner ordained by God.

Spot on
Bozell, fast becoming one of the writers I must read every week. He discusses varying, insightful topics every week, all with the hint of morality and values that I share. Laura Ingals on Nip Tuck was a disappointment for me, but Hollywood is in a race to the absolute bottom. They may not portray Muslims in a negative light, but they should not deny that their contribution has led to hatred of the West and its decadence. Michael Landon once told Melissa Gilbert that she was the one co-star who might amount to something...I wonder what he thinks of what she's amounted to now?

That statement is hogwash! No, it's just plain ol' B--- S---!! What you see, read, hear, and taste changes the tastes of society. You can't change your taste for a fine coffee until/unless you taste a coffee you like better.

A correct statement would be: "The shows are not reflecting the changing tastes of society so much as they are shaping the tastes of society as planned."

Planned by the commies many decades ago and carried out to perfection. There is a manual named: BRAIN-WASHING A Synthesis of the Russian Textbook on Psychopolitics. I know no date of publication but it was used by American Communist Cells in the 1930's. The following was taken from this manual.

The Communists planned it -- and they did it!

I wish Bozell would get with Communist history a little bit. Ann Coulter did for a while but for some reason she seems to have dropped it.

You're so right Brent! Little House on the Prairies, the Waltons, I Love Lucy, Jackie Gleason would win "Hands Down" against the current menu on network TV. Those were shows that everyone could watch without plugging their ears, covering their eyes, or sending the little ones off to bed.

I'm in my 60s and I can't stand the junk! The Parent's Television Council has done alot to clean up but more needs to be done!

Children only say what they hear and so do their parents!
