Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Someone should tell Madonna that her Catholic-bashing, Jesus-exploiting shtick is getting old, as old as the recycled Abba tunes she's putting out as her own music. As old, almost, as she is.

It's the kind of exploitation that makes you want to ignore her, instead of protest against her. By protesting her endless profaning of what many people -- 85 percent of Americans qualifies as "many," I think -- hold to be sacred, do protesters only put more gas on her fire?

Make no mistake. At 48, she may be old enough to be Grandma, but Madonna's latest "Confessions" tour, the one in which she mounts herself on a mirrored cross and dons a crown of thorns as she sings, is still a commercial bonanza. It's being touted as the top-grossing concert tour ever by a female "artist." Reuters reports that in the past six years, Madonna has sold a staggering $400 million worth of tickets.

Numbers like that haven't escaped some TV executives. Her latest benefactor is the NBC television network, which announced in July that it would air a two-hour special of her concerts at London's Wembley stadium. Would they include the infamous mock-crucifixion in her song "Live to Tell"? In August, NBC executive Kevin Reilly declared: "She felt like that was a cornerstone of the show. We viewed it and didn't see it as being inappropriate."

Notice that Madonna insisted her stunt as Jesus in a blouse and skirt could not easily be edited out. She said it was crucial, and in a way, it really is. Without religious controversy, she is merely an aging drama queen in an overpopulated crowd of heavy-breathing pop divas, all playing prostitutes for the wealth and infamy.

Now it appears that NBC is rethinking the endorsement. Clearly, it committed to her without feeling the public-relations need to sniff before it bought this smelly package. In the wake of an outpouring of objections from the likes of the American Family Association, the Catholic League and others, NBC is backpedaling. The network now states it is "awaiting delivery of the special, and once we see it in its entirety, we can make a final decision."

For those of you keeping score at home, it seems that over the last few weeks NBC is attempting to create a new public campaign to insult Catholics and evangelicals alike, as if NBC stood for Notoriously Bashing Christians.

They picked up the wildly successful, biblically based "Veggie Tales" animated series for Saturday mornings, but executives ordered the cartoon makers to excise the Bible verses and the God stuff. And they began the new drama "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" with a plot about Christians ("a psycho religious cult") ruining television today.

Nobody who cares about the state of the culture has missed how NBC never has an ounce of this "courage" or a throbbing urge to take a stand for "freedom of speech" when the faith in the spotlight is Islam. In February, when Muslims were violently protesting in the streets over comparatively mild Islam-mocking cartoons in a Danish newspaper, where was NBC? Cowering in a corner.

NBC's Campbell Brown announced on an NBC weblog that when it came to that religion: "After some discussion in our editorial meeting, we have decided not to show the cartoons explicitly. We are trying to treat this issue with care and sensitivity while still bringing you the story." They edited it out in a spirit of multicultural outreach to a tiny minority -- a spirit they can never seem to locate for the majority of Americans who revere Jesus.

So why not also edit out the Madonna crucifixion insult?

In 2004, the Parents Television Council released a study analyzing the treatment of religion on television and found that of all the networks, and by an overwhelming margin, NBC's treatment of religion was the worst. In fact, NBC had 9.5 negative treatments for every positive treatment, the absolute worst network by far. (Put in proper perspective, Fox came in a distant second-worst with 2.4 negative treatments for every positive.) In 2005, a dreadful NBC sitcom called "Committed" -- that unsurprisingly expired within weeks -- carried a whole half-hour plotline mocking Catholic reverence for the Eucharist. Madonna would have loved it.

In 1992, NBC was the network that aired the one-hit wonder Sinead O'Connor on "Saturday Night Live" ripping up a picture of Pope John Paul, shouting, "Fight the real enemy." Executives were genuinely outraged and apologetic at the unplanned display. Twelve years later, we have Madonna's circus act coming to town, at NBC's invitation. This time, NBC's executives are publicly proclaiming that the planned mockery of Jesus Christ himself isn't seen as "inappropriate."

well now
Why don’t you tell her? You’re someone. Otherwise, Madonna is just another trite entertainer working for a profit. You made her true point loud and clear: Reuters reports that in the past six years, Madonna has sold a staggering $400 million worth of tickets. And she did it without breaking the law. That she is offensive to many comes as no surprise. She does nothing for me. I find Pat Robertson offensive and I wonder how much money he’s racked in with what I sincerely consider a “Jesus-exploiting shtick”. In the end though, I would never try to stop Pat from doing his shtick, and I wouldn’t stop Madonna either.

Ignore her, indeed!
Bozell writes:

"It's the kind of exploitation that makes you want to ignore her, instead of protest against her. By protesting her endless profaning of what many people -- 85 percent of Americans qualifies as "many," I think -- hold to be sacred, do protesters only put more gas on her fire?"

That is exactly the point. Ignore her. Don't write any more columns about her. She was already irrelevant shortly after she burst onto the scene, and she is less relevant today. Don't pay any attention to her, and she should go away.

Mike R
Mike, you know when you turn Pat Robertson on, you are looking for religious comfort, to be saved, or see what he is up to at this point.

When our children are spending our entertainment dollars, you expect them to be entertained, not endoctrimented. You probably are not a parent, guiding your child through the maze of trash and garbage reaching out to grab our kids.

Our son is now a parent, and we are cautious, as are our son and daughter-in-law. Mike, if you aim for the lowest common denominator, you will far exceed your target. Remember, if you accept mediocraty, you are achieving your goals every day.

Only Catholics get to be offended
Maybe we should hold Bozell up to the same aggressively touchy standards he imposes upon everyone else. For instance, this column is filled with a regressive, despicable contempt for older women. Bozell has every right to be insulted by Madonna's crucifixion act -- that's kind of why she's doing it, smart guy -- but even he must realize his argument's thin since he attacks her in the cheapest possible way: hey, guys, she's middle-aged! Middle-aged women can't be hot! He even goes and tags her as "old enough to be a grandmother." At 48? Do the math: Does Bozell even approve of a 48 year grandma? Or is he just desperate for a jag? Throughout, he provides no evidence that she's even trying to act like a teenager in her show. He just assumes that, because they're on a stage, they're trying to be sexy. Because why else would a chick want to be on a stage -- am I right, fellas?

Gurky
Actually I am a parent and my youngest is a sophomore at York and a beautiful girl full of life. Folks tend to say that things are worse for today’s youngsters and while there may be some truth in that, the biggest pitfalls are always there. I found that I could successfully imprint much of my taste as well as character on my children and it served well to protect them over the years through public school and beyond. It didn’t always work, especially with my son. He is a stanch conservative and preparing for his second tour in Iraq. I have a profound liberal streak and the last thing I wanted him to do after college was enlist in the Army. Furthermore, he’s an officer and making a career (God help me) of it, while I never went beyond Spec 4 and ran out the gates when my time was up. Go figure. Indoctrination comes in many forms. Influence comes in even more. I endeavored, not always successfully to teach my children to think for them selves and build up a shield or filter for the world’s influences. I stick by my original point, but will add: You are right about Robertson and religious comfort while Madonna is in the world of entertainment. Of the two, I think Madonna is slightly more honest.

Forgive my rambling. I could go on and on about my kids if I don’t hold back

Violence works.
NBC censors Mohammed cartoons but not the Madonna crucifix because they fear violent reprisals on the part of muslims but not on the part of Christians. NBC and other media outlets with similar double standards are telling the Islamic world that it is right to erupt in violence when they are blasphemed, because it is effective. In a way it appears Islam is correct to kill nuns when the Pope criticizes them and to murder people in the streets when cartoons are made about Mohammed. The violence stops the criticism. Peaceful protest simply invites more criticism against Christians, and embolded secularism that knows it can bash Christians without consequence but remains silent on Islam for fear of reprisals. Islam may not be so crazy after all, they just might have the left figured out better than we do.

Flimflamman....
No it is not just Christians that have the right to be offended it is muslims as well. Difference is when Christians become offended and voice their protest they get bashed even more, but when muslims get upset and do what they do when they get offended, people shut up and stop criticizing them and often apologize for criticizing them in the first place.

My question is: Why is this so, and what should Christianity learn about this?

A Veggie Tales note
I've watched a lot of them. How does one remove the Scripture and God stuff without turning an episode into meaningless nonsense? I mean, they're not thumping the Bible very hard, but it's an inescapable part of the message.

I'm just wondering!

this and that
madonna - I just got the word from a blog that the crucifixion scene is NOT going to be shown. There will, of course be cries of "censorship" etc. from the more open minded among us.

Well, duhhh

It's called "economic censorship" ducky, and it is censorship in perhaps its purest form. It's really not too difficult to understand - you show the scene and the economic consequences will be severe. If you feel strongly enough about it as a work of art (gag!) then go for it. (How long will it take before the DVD of the scene comes out if it hasn't already?)

But you will NOT be deheaded. Small comfort I know.

i.e. - follow the money. NBC does seem to have some issues with religion - it doesn't like religion. katy couric covering the Funeral of Pope John Paul II - was that perky or what? Are we approaching the outer limits of absurd or what? Each time I hope they have they break new ground.

You want censorship? Belgian filmmaker Theodore Van Gogh made a film critical of Islam's treatment of women and for his efforts he was stabbed to death on the street. THAT is censorship.

ignoring madonna is good advice. she is pathetic and the older she gets the more pathetic she gets and to say that that is bias against older women is asinine - completely beside the point. she has been pathetic for years and now she is almost 50 and still pathetic. the only way she can get publicity is to do something outrageous - the mouth on mouth with some bubbleheaded young lovely on tv a few years back? (patheticer?) madonna is an idiot but she is smart enough to know that if she keeps stirring up controversy there will always be some (plenty) who are gullible enough to buy (absurdly overpriced) tickets. I'll bet her kids are proud of her. tickets to see cher anyone?

Kathleen Parker - now there, ducky, is a BABE. And she can write good too.

No disrespect intended Mike R and please give your son my thanks but comparing madonna to pat robertson is like comparing guitars to tennis balls.

Moving right along - 'Studio 60' premiered the other night and it is (to quote C.J. Cregg) BAAAD. The premier of West Wing contained a swipe at the religious right, but this whole show is built on it - a skit called "Crazy Christians" was cut out of a show (suspiciously like SNL) and this guy played by Judd Hirsch goes ballistic and ... yada yada yada.

Now if there were a skit called 'Those wacky Muslims" I might look.

I feel better now and my work here is done

afn&tt

one last thing
If you need religious comfort - go to Church. Go to a quiet church and just sit there and empty yourself and just sit there and be still.

"Be still and know that I am God"

I am a practicing Catholic and a Christian and for someone to say that because I am a Christian I am somehow conected to someone like Pat Robertson or Jimmy Swaggart or Benny (hairdo) Hinn is just ignorant.

flimflams flimsy argument
He wasn't attacking 'older women'. He was pointing out that by 48 most people don't run around trying to get attention by doing *whatever* they think will get them noticed.

That behavior starts around age 3-4 and ends (hopefully) around 25.

I like how you tend to engage in group-think analyzing his comment. He cannot just criticize *this* aging pop star. No he is 'attacking older women'.

I don't know if you are a neo-liberal(group over individual) but your complaint sure sounds like you are.

Veggie tales
To aurorawatcher,
I agree with you totally. My youngest son, now 14,had most of the Veggie Tales DVD/videos and I for one cannot imagine how NBC could simply "delete" the religious content of the show without destroying it. NBC should list it as "Veggie Tales...All Chopped Up" instead. Interesting how NBC has no qualms about featuring shows with openly pro-gay, profanity, or sexual messages (often all three at the same time) but heaven forbid they actually mention God or a bible verse. People need to let NBC know that this double standard does not fly.

@ Uncle Max
Theo Van Gogh was Dutch, not Belgian.

Madonna
The one poster has it right. She has always tried to use sleaze and sex to promote her talent. Look at what happened when she tried to entertainment other than that? It fizzled and flopped. No real talent. Ignoring her and not going to her shows and not buying her music will be the best medicine against her. People like her thrive on the adulation of others, don't give it them and they have problems.
Have always thought she was VASTLY overrated.

Still Dead
Theo Van Gogh is still dead, still killed by Islamic radicals for his production.

Modonna has always been a marginal talent, so she changes religions( remember Karbala), mocks religion and values.

Offended?
I'm not Catholic but I am offended by the display and disresect that witch uses for self-promotion. I know a little about witches: My 10th great grandmother, her sister and many of her neighbors were hung in Salem over 300 years ago. And they never got off the ground, until their last day.

NBC- Uses an OId Broad
Why would NBC use an old broad like that to hurt christians, no-one really wants to see an old broken down has been, besides she might need to hang on that cross for her sins and she too tried to stand up and face the music.

Psy 101
For years, Madonna's been desperately seeking the adult attention she didn't get as a kid. I suppose she was ignored by Daddy unless she behaved in some outrageous fashion. Guess it's not easy for a "naughty little girl" to get over her issues when she's being paid millions to keep it up.

Madonna
Isn't she the anti Christ? Oh no. That's Bill Clinton.

As a follower of Christ
I am not concerned about Madonna or Rosie O'Donnell getting away with their politically correct anti-Catholic tirades and stunts. There must have been a "mean, intolerant" nun in the schools that they attended or something, it is pretty apparent that they don't want nor believe that the laws of God apply to them. After all, doesen't He know that Madonna is a STAR? Wow...
I do not know how poor Pat Robertson got involved in this discussion, but the point is lost on me....
No one should presume to know another mans heart or his own personal walk with the Lord.
The God of Creation will judge all, that is His job, not mine.

Madonna's self absorption is USELESS

The way Madonna has lived her life is all about $$ and herself. She is a "star" of what? Hollywood? So, far the road she is taking will end up a dark star -that isn't going to shine anymore. She won't be shining in heaven with the angels because she mocked her Creator.

But one day she will face her Creator and will have to give an account to Him about how she mocked Him and hung on a glass cross looking like a total clown. Unless she changes her mockery attitude she won't be seeing anything except a dead end.

48 year old grandmas
True confessions. I was born the same month and year as both Michael Jackson and Madonna. I took no offense to Brent's comments on her age. At 48 I have long since passed the juvenile desires that Madonna continues to exhibit. She is a child. And her pathetic and juvenile attempts at attention are a disgrace to my generation.

I didn't have my first child til I was 28. He is now nearly 20. Yeah, she's old enough to be a grma. And old enough to know better.

Brent didn't say 48 yr old women can't be hot. But a grown woman behaving like a teen is NOT hot. We are not amused at her pathetic attempts to crucify herself in mock atonement.

Like others have said, the best solution is to just ignore her. ...Either that or we could riot and burn down the NBC studios. I dunno, whatdayathink?

gracious no!
oh, I'm NOT a grma! But if we'd had children a few years earlier....Its not so "inconceivable." :)
BTW, aurora, Veggie Tales are the best. My kids all grew up on them. I'm so mad that NBC is tampering with them in this way. Why do they even bother? Sigh.

HKCindy
Not only is Madonna a disgrace to her generation, she is a disgrace to womanhood. She is a disgrace to all woman. She never did have any talent just like the rest of the so called entertainsment industry. All the females in the industry us sex and showing as much of their bodys totry to prove that they can act. They all look alike blond skinny dodo's.Actors? like t. Cruse are so assinine in there apperances and in trying to push their so called religion? Scientolagy. Madonna with her Kabalaand R.Odonnal with her blasphmy of all religions. No wonder the Islamisfacists think that we will be a push over and be able to defeat us.

Christian offending hypocrites
I am not writing to question Madonna's right to free expression or Rosie O'Donnells right to claim radical Christianity and radical Islam are the same. In this wonderful system in which we live, they have as every right to criticize and offend what people believe to their heart's content (although you have to question the sanity of one who would make a living at it). But if you were to ask Madonna, or Rosie O'Donnell, or the New York Times for that matter, why their criticisms and offensive tirades focus entirely on Christians, I have no doubt that each one would claim to be an equal opportunity offender when it comes to religion in general. Ya, right!

So, why do we never see Madonna offend the likeness of Muhammed? Why do we not hear Rosie tell Muslims that their religion is backward and an offense to civil society as she does so easily with Christians? These people are not stupid. We've witnessed in recent months and years what happens when people do that: The Pope's historical reference causes Muslim riots and a nun to be murdered. Theo van Gogh is murdered for making a movie on Muslim treatment of women. A Danish cartoon causes the Muslim world to go berserk. Yes, people actually die!

Isn't it time to label these so-called bold, religious offenders for what they really are? Since, out of fear, they refuse to leave their safe place - bashing Christians, shouldn't we recognize them as only cowardly Christian bashers? And shouldn't we recognize the claim that radical Christianity is equal to radical Islam is bogus? Their actions prove otherwise.

Ban Madonna's Act
Until she speaks out against Muslim violence and rides a big statue of Joe Smoe Mohhamed

Like a Virgin
Perhaps Madonna should add this act to her show. Get 72 dark eyed young women on stage and veiled while singing "Like a Virgin!" Also, have an actor dressed with a suicide belt on and black make-up i.e. the belt has exploded and have him be the glorious prophet Mohammed. While Madonna is singing, Mohammed could be going up and down the row of "virgins".
My goodness!! Talk about controversy!!

Only Madge's Religion Is Sacred ...
Yeah, just try and ridicule her Kabbalah.

How about we do a comedy skit where red string bracelets are tied to the legs of pigs. Or how about a scene where Kabbalah water is poured down a fecal clogged toilet.

Think Madge would object?

HKCindy,

I was going to address flimflamman's "new math", but you beat me to it.

I too was born the same year as Madge, Michael, (and don't forget Prince, or whatever he's calling himself these days) and am 48, became a parent for the first time at 27, my oldest is 21, and we just celebrated her son's first birthday.

As for Madge, she always has been a circus act, only now it's really pathetic. Her high-top is well-worn and the stench of animals and their residue is quite strong. And these days she has to "prove" something by contorting herself in strange yoga positions.

As far as I'm concerned, she can do the crucifixion mockery ... as long as she does it in full burka.

Jane,

I absolutely LOVE your "act" idea re: virgins and 72 dark-eyed women in burkas. I think it could be worked into the crucifixion stunt I mentioned above.

Cowards only look brave when:
Cowards only look brave, when they battle someone or something else that they know will not fight back. Christians are going to pray and forgive. God is a loving and forgiving lord, and waits for the sinner to change, christians come out to support that healing of change through God's word. If the sinner does'nt choose the healing, God's judgement will be upon them. I pray none of us will have to see the wrath of God, but sometimes once a coward, always a coward.
