Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Conservative author and radio talk-show host Bill Bennett has been a prominent American political and cultural figure since 1981, when he became President Reagan's chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities and later Secretary of Education. The author of 16 books -- including "The Book of Virtues" and his newest, "The American Patriot's Almanac" -- he is host of "Bill Bennett's Morning in America," a syndicated talk show that airs from 6 to 9 a.m. weekdays on nearly 200 radio stations and Sirius Patriot Channel 144. I talked to the man The New York Times says is "the leading spokesman of the Traditional Values wing of the Republican Party" on Thursday.

Q: Was Barack Obama's victory due to his personality or his neo-New Deal ideas?

A: All of the above and more. It was a perfect storm of a campaign for him. He's a terrifically talented political figure. If politics is a sport, like some others, he's a natural. He made very few mistakes. Second, his ideas seemed to be right, given the circumstances. And as you probably have noted, it looks like the ideas of free-market capitalism didn't get a very good airing in the last campaign. John McCain's a great guy. But he never defended the basic principles of free-market capitalism. He talked about earmarks, but never the rationale for free-market capitalism. . Plus, another part of the storm was the economic collapse of Sept. 15. I'm not sure anybody wins on our side after that.

Q: What did the Obama victory tell you about the Republican Party's current health and fitness?

A: Well, what it told me is that we haven't been very good Republicans. I think our principles are fine; I think they need some refocus and much better explanation. One thing that has not been talked about is the "failure to communicate," as Cool Hand Luke said. George Bush is a terrific guy in a lot of ways, but he's not a good communicator. The rationale for various things was never really made in a compelling way, whether it be the war or other steps. By the way, contrast that with a first-rate communicator.

These things also often happen in cycles. There's a kind of schoolyard ethic in America which says it's somebody else's turn. Combine that with the final point, which is ironically Ronald Reagan's teaching -- if it happens on your watch, it happened because of you; and are you better off than you were four or eight years ago -- and you have the result. I'm kind of pleased that McCain got 46 percent. Given all that was against him, that's not really so bad. Byron York has written that McCain was flying into head winds. I told Byron at the governors conference (in Miami) that he was flying into a Category 5 hurricane.

Q: You've no doubt examined the election results. Obama won mainly in the cities. Do you see in those numbers any problems for Republicans down the road?

A: Yeah, there are problems and challenges, but they're not insurmountable. We can do this if we're smart and put our best ideas forward. I keep telling our guys this is not the worst of times for us. This is not Watergate. (Mississippi Gov.) Haley Barbour reminded us in Miami that after Watergate that there was serious discussion as to whether we should drop the name "Republican." We're not there (laughs). It's not that bad (laughs).

Who knows what will happen in the next four years with Barack Obama? It looks like a pretty strong Democrat majority -- maybe a filibuster-proof majority, or close to it, in the Senate -- and a majority in the House. So they'll have their way. And when they have their way, there are the laws of physics and the laws of politics and sometime they look the same: There's reaction and there's counterreaction. We shall see what they do.

But we have work to do. But I'm not worried about talking to people in the cities. I'm not worried about talking to blacks and Hispanics. There are plenty of good ideas that Republicans have if we just present them. I'm very impressed with the book "The Grand New Party: How Republicans Can Win the Working Class and Save the American Dream" by Ross Douthat and Reihan Salam. We have some good young talent and these are two of the brightest young talents. The book is really quite good. It's sort of what (Minnesota Gov.) Tim Pawlenty talked about -- the Sam's Club party rather than the country club party.

Q: Do you think conservatism's core values have been forgotten over the last eight years?

A: Yes. The crazy spending. And again, no defense of these ideas. Tom Wolfe has a great phrase: He talks about the "great relearning." We need to relearn some of these things we've forgotten -- about why we believe in freedom, why we believe markets should have the dominance in our economic system. The current circumstances are very scary, because we've swallowed a ton of government very quickly and we aren't digesting it very well. We'll see, but one thing that may come out of this is a very strong -- I'll say the word again -- counterreaction.

Q: What do you think it's most important for Republicans to stress from now until 2012 -- social conservatism and value issues or fiscal issues?

A: Solutions. Pragmatism. Getting the job done. Fixing things. One is encouraged when you're around the governors: They have real jobs -- they've got to pick up the garbage and educate the kids.

I think that's where we go. People are nervous. They're worried about "losing ground" -- Charles Murray's phrase. They're worried about their kids not succeeding, not advancing the ball, the next generation not doing as well as the last. And that's what Republicans need to address. We're a party that can get things done. We're not blinded by ideology. We believe in the American dream. We believe in individual enterprise and individual responsibility. That's an amalgam: That's partly values, partly business ethic.

Q: Do you think that it is time for some younger conservative Republicans to show up on the scene and carry the ball?

A: Exactly. I actually was calling for all of our guys to step down -- (House Minority Leader) John Boehner, (Senate Minority Leader) Mitch McConnell, everybody. I like them both. They're capable people. But I think the British have a good idea here -- when you lose like this, you step out of power. You're gone and other people step in. I love our bench. I love the Eric Cantors and the Paul Ryans. Some of our governors are terrific. (Louisiana Gov.) Bobby Jindal was on our panel -- I had the honor of being on with him. I mentioned Pawlenty. We have a terrific bench. We have great talent up there.

Q: What is the most important step conservatives must take -- starting now -- to begin their comeback?

A: Well, get their heads up. Darrell Royal, the old football coach (at Texas), said the only time you should look down at your shoes is if you have had an accident. Morale is important. If you believe in these ideas and principles, then act like you do and let's get to work. We lost the game here. But I think morale is very important. I don't want to say it's time to go off in the wilderness, but it's time to think, and think things through. Prepare your stuff. Some discipline like the Contract with America would be a very good idea, I think.

maverick - Oh, are we?

Writes maverick:

"We are Republicans first, Conservatives second."

Not a goddam bit. If you're "Republicans first," you're conservatives not a friggin' little bit at all.

What's been demonstrated is that when the Republican Party governs and campaigns on policies readily apparent as "Socialism Lite," they can't count on their usual-and-customary appeal to bigotry (homophobia, xenophobia, and religiotic dumbphuckery in general) to "energize" the conservative base in their support.

True American conservatives (as opposed to the "social pseudoconservatives") are sharply focused on the constitutional restraint of civil government, particularly with regard to restrictions upon taxation, spending, and counterfeiting.

And counterfeiting - also known as "currency inflation" - is what the Federal Reserve has been doing at an accellerating rate all throughout the Republican Party's control of Congress and the White House.

Hell, in 2005, the Fed announced that it would no longer be reporting the M3.

That figure - the M3 - is *the* most valuable "quick read" indicator of the rate at which the money supply is being expanded.

How the currency is being inflated.

How the value of the dollar in your pocket, in your paycheck, in your savings - is getting hammered by our Republican Party government.

The Republican Party is *NOT* conservative.

They're a bunch of grafting, thieving, bribe-taking, toilet-stall-fumbling, counterfeiting, earmarking, pork-sucking sonzabitches.

And until they clean house - with a flamethrower - American conservatives aren't going to support them any more.

Got that message, maverick?

We've haven't been very good Republicans
Thats been the problem all along. We are Republicans first, Conservatives second. Republicans are the party we belong to. All we hear is this, I'm a Conservative not a Republican. What? It's the Republican party not the Conservative party. Let's get something straight. The Conservatives can not function and live as a third party without the Republicans. Let the Conservatives attach themselves to the Democrats the way they have attached themselves to the Republicans and let's see how far they get. Time after time the Conservatives has pulled the rug out from under the Republicans with their fail strategies months before an election. Remember those words shut up and sing. Well the Conservatives ought to practice what they preach months before an election and shut up and vote Republican. The Conservatives principles can follow later after we win the election. There is no such thing I'm a Conservative and not a Republican. Being a Conservative along without being a Republican has no existence in the world of politics.

MESSAGE FROM A FOOT SOLDIER
Apathy is what’s going to kill the conservative movement and ultimately be the demise of this once great country. This country is about to see the most left leaning, liberal government in our history and what do we conservatives do? Nothing. What’s at stake? The Right to Bear Arms, socialized healthcare, The War on Terror, I could go on and on. We whine and moan on blogs, we threaten to leave the country, we try to analyze what went wrong, but we don’t take any action against the forces that work against us. You must ask yourself, what kind of country will I leave for my children through my inaction? I have and I am trying to do my small part against one of these forces at http://stopthepresses2.blogspot.com Will you join me.

What's Left?
Well, since the Republican ticket lost women, african americans, hispanics, young, urban, educated voters, all that's left for the republicans to lose are older white men.

Put Palin on the ticket and next go-around you'll lose even the old white people.

Stealth Conservatism
Here is a blog I did on getting to the base.
Needs lots of work to work.

Bill Bennett
It would be good if the new RNC Chairman could enlist conservative philosophers like Bill Bennett to write out some tenets of good conservative governance.

No Government will save us
We keep looking to DC for answers...and we come up empty.

Maybe we need to start looking elsewhere?

an intelligent response is found here:

Bill's part in the Republican collapse
The loss of 2008 started in 2004, and it was what the so-called "conservative base," lead by Bennett, that pushed the party down the slippery slide. Bush won a close election, and he announced his plan to use his "political capital" for the good of the nation. He pushed for two things: a wise, conservative economic solution to the social security coming collapse and a wise, compassionate solution to illegal aliens. In both areas, the Bennett conservative base opposed him. So, we lost the senior citizen vote and we lost the Hispanic vote, and we lost the White House and any hope of holding back the Congress. Thanks so very much, Bill!

Bomb Throwers
Why are there so many freakin' bomb throwers on Townhall? Trolls. No other reason, I can't think of any other reason why there are so many posters who overty despise conservatives and the Republican Party. Has to be trolls from DU spamming the site.

They wouldn't last 5 minutes on Free Republic. First because their IQ is too low and second because the Mods would zot them and they'd be gone. Townhall has become a cesspool more interested in marketing than providing a forum for intelligent, civilized debate.

Don't worry...I won't let the door hit me in the a**.

What About Supporting Israel???
Christians recognize the biblical mandate to support Israel. What did the GOP do to support Israel??? THEY HAVE DIVIDED THE LAND OF ISRAEL SINCE 1991, OPENLY DISOBEYING A STERN WARNING OF ALMIGHTY GOD AGAINST SUCH IDIOTIC BEHAVIOR!
Then they have the audacity and incomprehensible Biblical ignorance to wonder why such horrible things as Katrina, Andrew, Hugo, 911, the Northridge eqrthquake, the Midwestern floods, the Midwestern tornadoes, and the unstable economy and government are happening to America. What has the GOP ever done about getting the useless UN out of America??? NOTHING! Like Kumbaya Liberals in DC, they support the UN and cared not one iota about letting Hugo Chavez and Ahmadinejad embarrass our nation on American soil. What has the GOP done about prosecuting blatant TREASON at the New York Times? NOTHING! What has the GOP done or said about the murder of Christian missionaries in Muslim countries including Saudi Arabia??? NOTHING!

GOP - Useless Idiots!
What did the GOP do about Jamie Gorelick's infamous Wall between the Justice Department and the CIA and FBI that led to obstruction of justice, subpoena denials, and ultimately 911 or Bill Clinton's patently illegal China Scandal??? NOTHING! What did the GOP do about gay marriage??? THEY COULDN'T EVEN PASS LEGISLATION TO OPPOSE GAY MARRIAGE! What did the GOP do about making English our Sovereign language??? NOTHING!!! What did the GOP do about un-Constitutional judges who choose to legislate from the bench??? NOT ONE IMPEACHMENT! What did the GOP do about Pelosi's TREASONOUS act of visiting with a sworn American enemy, Syria??? NOTHING! There's nothing really Conservative at all about this party; they are merely a bunch of Corporate Socialist Wealth-transfer Representatives in Washington training for their future careers as lobbyists down the street. What did the GOP do to oppose the Fairness Doctrine? THE GOP SUPPORTED THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE; Trent Lott threatened to pull the plug on talk radio! With friends like that in DC, who needs enemies???

Communicating is only Half The Solution
You have to walk the walk; today's GOP is not following the US Constitution or free-market principles of Capitalism. Hypocrisy will get you absolutely nowhere. 1994 brought the Contract With America; the GOP talked the talk and made all sorts of promises to the American People. CHANGE was in the air. Within 2 years, they revealed that they never intended to walk the walk of Conservatism one iota. Did they address the systematic brainwashing of America's children and young adults in the public schools and universities??? Sure, by giving more of our taxpayer money to these PC indoctrination and babysitting centers to support the opposition party?!?! DOES NOT COMPUTE!!! What did the GOP, the Grand Ole Pathological Liars, do about the Fair Tax, the Simple tax, or repealing the 16th Amendment??? NOT A DAMN THING! What did the GOP do about repealing Roe vs. Wade or curtailing Abortion??? NOT A DAMN THING, except partial-birth Abortion legislation! How did they limit government spending? BY EXPANDING THE INDIVIDUAL WELFARE STATE AND THE CORPORATE WELFARE STATE TO UNPRECEDENTED PROPORTIONS! How much of the Contract With America was ever fulfilled??? ZILCH, ZERO, NADA!!! Did the GOP listen to, a.k.a. "represent", the overwhelming number of American People who vehemently opposed bailouts??? NO! Did they care that 80% of us vehemently opposed Illegal Immigration? NO! Did the GOP follow the Constitutional mandate to "avoid foreign entanglements"? NOPE! Did the GOP keep its promise to avoid the un-Constitutional practice of nation building? NO! Today's GOP is a joke! DC is a welfare state jobs bank for lawyers and Liberals, ad nauseum. It is a Socialist cesspool of college-brainwashed, Ivy League political nuts, Corporate lobbyists, and think-tankers, most of whom have never worked a day in their lives, and neither party is an exception to the rule.

COMMUNICATION
I hope I spelled that right. : )

That's what we need. Bennett's right. The standard bearer(s) for 2010 and 2012 not only need to be effective messengers, but they have to LIVE and BELIEVE in the message.

That's why the governors are poised to be the future. They actually work. They deal with payrolls. They need to believe in Reaganomics, and freedom, and believe it deep down.

They can't be wishy-washy compromisers (no more Dole's or McCain's). That's my one issue with Pawlenty--he's great, but he's a Global Warming guy. When it comes to Global Warming, or any issue that is dominated by the dems, we simply can't compete--they're better at BS than we are.

I still think Palin's a player because she IS a communicator and she believes her stuff. I'm curious to see what she could be without the McCain (mis)handlers.

What I Believe
By acting upon our values, we will succeed again. In business, we succeed because we provide a good product.

This is the why, and the when, that we succeed in politics. When our message is strong and we believe in it, it will come across as the natural 'common sense' that it is.

As soon as we try and play the liberal game their way, we will lose. This has been proven handily in the last two elections.

Remember what you believe and why.

I believe in free market capitalism because it has worked to build my success and the success of others.

I believe in Judeo-Christian values because it has worked to help up my neighbors to success, even when they fall upon hard times.

I believe in ethical treatment of others because it ensures a smooth and functioning transition between the very cycles that we all experience in life.

What do you believe?

Obama not a NATURAL BORN US Citizen!
Hey folks don't you think arguing about "obama policies" is a bit presumptuous?

HE'S NOT EVEN PROVED THAT HE'S A NATURAL BORN U.S. CITIZEN! And the truth is HE CAN'T because he was BORN IN KENYA and he doesn't have a certificate of LIVE BIRTH for the State of Hawaii, only a "certification" for FILE purposes only and of which would not even allow a person to get a drivers license.

Here’s Chief Justice Clarence Thomas’ fax#, write him TODAY - if you don't know what to say, use mine as a sample. OUR COUNTRY IS CALLING ON YOU – PLEASE DO IT TODAY! It’s not too late, he is not president YET.

http://moniquemonicat.wordpress.com/2008/11/09/%E2%80%A2-si gn-obama-petition/

Good column
I liked Bennett's comment about capitalism not getting a fair airing. It would be very hard for someone who did not believe in it to explain it and sell it to others. With the economy melting down, Obama boldly declared where he wanted to go. It is the wrong direction but, the alternative was a guy standing at the Y and dithering about which way to go and not really caring because he doesn't understand economics and just wanted the cool office digs.

I don't
believe it's over for this country. It's easy to be pessimistic but let's not forget where we came from as a nation..we were born out of prayer way before there were colonies, and then through the intervening decades. Our Constitution was written after prayer by our Founders. We can argue all day about their spiritual beliefs, but that doesn't negate the fact they couldn't get anything done until I believe it was Ben Franklin that suggested they
start with prayer. It's the founding of this
country that makes us exceptional, no other nation on Earth has been founded
as a direct result of prayer and the faith of our fathers, at least any other gentile nation.
I do believe we will be in for some judgement,
we've experienced increasingly stronger warnings for decades, and even 9-11 couldn't wake us from our spiritual slumber for long.
I don't think 2 Chr. 7:14 was just for then but
is also for now, and it is telling the Church
universal to get out from under it's pews and on it's knees in repentence. We definitely need another Great Awakening if we are to survive. We have 35 years and 50 million executed babies, the "least ones" Obama failed to mention when he cites Matthew. The "least" that God cares so much for their angels are forever before His throne..their blood is crying out for justice.

The Cat's out of the proverbial bag.....
so to speak. When a majority of Catholics, who are PRO-life vote FOR an abortion proponent such as Obama, not much can be done. When a majority of Jewish voters vote FOR someone who says they will side with the Muslims if push comes to shove, not much can be done....when the demographics of the country are manipulated through permissive immigration policies, not much can be done....it's all about numbers now, and the deomwits have the numbers on their side.

The only hope I see for conservatives is if the demowits screw things up so BADLY, that a re-awakening will occur with most people in this nation. Other than that, not much can be done.
