Republican Revival?

Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

The Republicans have a chance. Not that they deserve it. Not that they won't blow it. Still, a chance who'da thunk it back in those parched and yellow days of November 2008?

The chance the Republicans have, in the winter of 2009, was eminently predictable, stemming from human factors such as -- ahem -- misunderestimation, by the Democratic victors, of the difference between pointing to problems and actually addressing those problems intelligently and usefully.

In politics, no matter how good you say you are, you probably aren't that good: maybe not even half as good. Having learned as much about and from the Republicans, voters have the chance to rediscover the adage applies to both parties.

The Pelosi team in the House, seemingly, isn't one tenth as good and brilliant as they let on during the campaign. Nor -- let us strive to put this charitably -- has the Obama team, including its No. 1 member, moved with the grace and sure-footedness that member led us to expect. Hardly anyone but the House Democrats thinks the -- ha-ha-ho-ho -- "stimulus" bill has more to do with stimulus than with the enactment of boilerplate Democratic goals, chief among these being the distribution of pork. The Democrats shut the Republicans wholly out of the process -- and received not one House Republican vote.

President Obama, without having stepped directly into the kitchen where this gastronomic mess was prepared, gave the concoction his top Michelin rating. Now the Senate is considering a do-over that the Republicans, if they stay united, can force: less spending-for-the-sake-of-spending, more tax cuts aimed at job creation.

We'll see. Meanwhile President Obama, feeling the need to redeem some of his more dicey campaign promises, decides to close Guantanamo Bay's terrorist detention camp, with no plan in hand for dealing with the inmates. He appoints to the Cabinet two top Democrats whose tax policy is to ignore payments they don't care to make. Ex-Sen. Tom Daschle, nominated to head up health and welfare policy, never suspected he owed taxes on a car and driver that a client provided him absolutely free? Ah, the good life in Washington!

If Democrat Tom Daschle's cheerful disdain for the obligation to pay taxes doesn't cancel out Republican Jack Abramoff's freebooting lobbyist career, still it can remind voters that claims of moral superiority from politicians of any cast aren't especially becoming.

Yes, Democrats, too, have feet fashioned of clay -- a problem afflicting the human race since Adam. Even if Republicans aren't constitutionally any smarter, here is their chance to remind voters -- aha -- that the Second Coming didn't occur a few days ago, in Washington, for all the ballyhoo that surrounded the occasion.

Are the Republican smart enough to pick up the balls their opponents keep bobbling? We first have to find out:

* Whether Republicans really believe their own rhetoric about pork. Unless they try seriously to slice big hunks of the stuff from the "stimulus" bill, there's no reason to take them seriously as an opposition party.

* Whether Republicans are as resourceful in debate as are the Democrats. What? Can't show ordinary people how mega-deficits cramp the economy and undermine job creation? Go home. Find some other line of work.

* Whether the "economic" wing of the party understands the desirability of an alliance with "social" conservatives as well as the socials understand -- and practice -- it. I rarely hear the socials griping about the free market; I hear free enterprisers all the time blubbering over what they mischaracterize as foolish fixation on the pro-life and gay "marriage" issues.

* Whether Michael Steele, the new, black national chairman, can figure out how to show minorities the blessings of a life consecrated to freedom, not government servitude.

And that's for starters. It goes that way in politics; one day up, the next day down, then up again. Of course you have to know what you're doing. That's the trick on which today's Republicans didn't exactly write the textbook.

Run Right, govern Right
Fiscal conservatives are an increasingly marginalized element of the Republican Party. The core of the party consists of social conservatives, and social conservatives are, with few exceptions, religious conservatives. I think it is time for these conservatives to stand up and figure out what they really want--a hard Right Christian party. That's the only 'reform' of the Republican party that is viable. Your new RNC head Michael Steele is, as far as I can see, a RINO/CINO. He is not at all what you need to rise again.

A truly Right-wing party must purge all who don't agree with its principles. It needs to become serious about developing conservative criteria for belonging to party organizations, running under the party label, and holding positions in the party.

A new, genuinely conservative Republican party must exclude at least the following:
a) all gays: Make the Republican Party America's straight party.
b) all atheists and agnostics. Republicans must be religious. Evangelical Protestantism is to be preferred, but conservative Catholics and Jews are welcome.
c) abortion: No pro-choicers in the Republican Party. Period.
d) Creatinism and ID: no Republican may believe in evolution.
e) Opposition to social programs: The Party should oppose all domestic social programs enacted by the federal government going back to at least the late 19th century. Individual Republicans should be encourage to drop out of or refuse to support any and all such programs. How can Republicans expect to persuade other Americans to take their ideology seriously if they still live as parasites, collecting Social Security, benefitting from Medicare, education loans, research grants, and other forms of welfare? Credibility should start at home.

Republicans can comeback. The irresponsibility and ridiculousness of the "stimulus" doesn't sit well with sensible democrats, republicans, or independents who voted for Obama.
The fact people are saving rather than spending like crazy shows a desire to not dig a deeper hole.

There will never be
a Republican revival until they become the party of fiscal responsibility, fighting for not only tax cuts on those that actually pay taxes, but also for spending cuts. Balance the budget, stupid!

GOP Now a Big Govenment Party Also
The ideologically exhausted Republicans face a complex set of challenges. While many will pay lip service to the values of small government, free markets and deregulation, there is the undeniable realization that large-scale government participation in the economy, in the near term, is a foregone conclusion both in public spending and financial regulation.

The real debate across the aisle revolves around cutting taxes vice spending but most economists come down on the side of spending, as tax cuts, while quick to enact, don’t necessarily create immediate economic activity. Consider the Bush tax rebate of last summer, 80 percent of it went to pay down debt or into savings thereby creating little in the way of a spending stimulus. Building public works creates demand for construction materials, puts people to work who in turn spend and the end product is a public good that lasts for generations. On the other hand, outside of tax credits for equipment or facilities, businesses will not necessarily expand output due to receiving a tax break unless they see a demand for their goods or services. In the final analysis, Republicans on Capitol Hill have reverted in form to the role they played in the era before Ronald Reagan, that of advocating a better way to mange government as opposed to being the purveyors of policies that guide the country to the right.

PresidentialBalls.com will tell you.
See the Pelosi Pig.

Silver Lion
We got Bingo! It was Abraham Lincoln, a REPUBLICAN, who laid the groundwork for an income tax.

Reply to Zapdoodat...
I like a person that can counter....lol...so, this must be what you're talking about.....note the last sentence!

"In 1862, Abraham Lincoln signed a bill that imposed a 3% tax on incomes between $600 and $10,000 and a 5% tax on higher incomes. The bill was amended in 1864 to levy a tax of 5% on incomes between $600 and $5,000, a 7.5% tax on incomes in the $5,000-$10,000 range and a 10% tax on everything higher. This bill was repealed in 1872 and declared to be unconstitutional."

Until 1913 of course.....

Silver Lion
It was Republican Abraham Lincoln who first imposed and income tax from 1862-1865.

Dude, wars are expensive and it was the only way he knew of, to come up with the tremendous amount of money needed to pay and equip the Union Army.

Reply to Zapdoodolt....

and it was that illustrious DEMOCRAT Woodrow (woodpecker) Wilson that gave us the Federal Income Tax in 1913.

The ol' "schoolmaster in politics"..I like this quote:

"His domestic program expanded the role of the federal government in managing the economy and protecting the interests of citizens."

(government expansion - size and power)

"His foreign policy established a new vision of America’s role in the world."

(revised imperialism)

and of course this:

"The administration sponsored Espionage and Sedition Acts that outlawed criticism of the government, the armed forces, and the war effort. Violators of the law were imprisoned or fined, and even mainstream publications were censored or banned."

GASP ! Could this be a DEMOCRAT? Censorship?

anti-war folks imprisoned?....GASP! Could this be a Democrat?

Perfect foundational background for ensuing Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover to succeed eh?

Daryl
In all sincerity.

You should be ashamed of yourself voting for the Republican party.

It took three terms of consecutive Republican presidents (Warren G. Harding;1920, Calvin Coolidge; 1924, Herbert Hoover;1928) to drive my beloved and proud country to its knees more than 70 years ago, resulting in the Great Depression.

When will you learn that the country needs to be run by competent people?

Anyhow, it only took one Republican president, in two terms, to drive this mighty of mighty countries to the brink of financial oblivion. George Bush was the master of 'cut taxes and spend even more' that has successfully hollowed out our economy.

Let's remember, it's not about spreading the wealth, or creating wealth, but it is about the DESTRUCTION of wealth, Republican-style.

I hope you are proud of yourself and will NEVER vote Republican again.

OnTheEdge

In Bill Murchison's column on the 3rd, a typo sneaked in and Michael Steele was identified with a different last name.

This column was pulled, along with all the comments there, and the revised column posted.

The same column on the 4th, now has the name correct.

Thanks for the fun stuff.
Talk with ya later.

You did a good job of making my point.Thanks.The more that spending is cut the smaller the amount of taxes that need to be collected.I'm sure that there are several governmental departments that aren't really needed for the life, liberty and pursuit of happiness thing that we should all be enjoying.I refrain from calling names so that no one accuses me of not being able to string more than two thoughts together without being rude or crude.Appoligy accepted.

Michael Steele,blacks enslaved by Democr
.....blacks....freedom.....government servitude....I feel a speech coming on...is there someone in the party capable of giving it? An "Obama moment" for a Republican hopeful?
A black; an Asian? Sarah?

Daryl
" up.After spending is cut to the point of having a surplus."

What are you smoking???

It was six years of Republican 'cut taxes and spend like drunken sailors' attitude that led to this debt bubble implosion.

Spending more than you have will surely lead to disaster.

It was Republicans who spent more than the Democrats. They increased pork barrel spending from 3,000 to 14,000 projects a year, NOT PAID FOR.

They have engaged in a five and half year social engineering project in the Middle East that costs $120 billion a year and may well last another 100 years, NOT PAID FOR.

They have added another layer of entitlement spending that costs $50 billion a year called Medicare Prescription, NOT PAID FOR.

Mandated $4 billion a year in ethanol subsidies, as well as drastically increased cotton, sugar, soybean, corn, wheat handouts, NOT PAID FOR.

Doubled the size of the Department of Education, NOT PAID FOR.

Daryl
"should have to pay some taxes in a graduated manner according to income."

They do, you Moron! Everyone starts paying 15.3% tax on their first dollar earned. It called social secuirity and medicare taxes.

Estimated receipts for fiscal year 2008 were $2.66 trillion. The top three sources are:

* $1.25 trillion - Individual income tax
* $927 billion - Social Security/payroll taxes
* $315 billion - Corporate income tax

You may casually dismiss Social Security taxes as not a "real" tax, but $927 billion is a real number, and EVERYONE pays that on their first dollar earned.

You'll notice that the taxes paid by individuals is nearly 7 times what corporations pay. What do you think about that?

Might I suggest.

Since there is a new RNC Chair why not have him meet with all the Repubs in DC and work on an amended package that includes spending cuts and tax payment adjustments.IMHO everyone and I do mean everyone making a taxable income should have to pay some taxes in a graduated manner according to income. There's no sound reason for 40 million income earners to pay no tax,the tax burden should be shared from the bottom up.After spending is cut to the point of having a surplus then cut personal and corporate taxes as needed. There's no sound reason for the current STIMULUS package to even be considered. There are much better ways to get the economy moving than SPEND-SPEND-SPEND what we don't have.An old simple minded conservative Vietnam Vet.

I hear from so called
"fiscal conservatives" who want to throw social conservatives overboard. People who are socially conservative tend to be fiscally conservative as well. It would be a big, big mistake for the fiscal conservatives to think they can throw us overboard and win elections.

Republicans

Not to worry they (republicans) will find a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. And !!! they are very good at it.
Example: before all is said and done they will stand in line with the left and approve much of the spending (pork) the left has placed in the stimulus bill. As a rule, they lack courage and their moral values are equal to the low road the left takes.

Rat
Are you talking about the Comments being taken back down to zero? I noticed that much!

Ratassamoni,
...I'm still waking up here,on the edge. What's the point about the "exchanges"? I'm not very computer-savvy,AT ALL,...did I miss something? If you're still hungry, you can always have a bowl of cereal! Bon apetit!

Four years
I predict it will take the American public four years to figure out the Dems. The GOP hurt themselves so much that even if the libs cause hurt in the economy, they won't be blamed for the next election cycle.

Republican Revival?
I have a fabulous idea. How about we actually elect some honest to God Americans for our elected leaders. The Repubs and Democraps are one in the same, eh? The idea here is to put us all in poverty,,,,,and we are laying down for the thugs. The time is here, fellow Americans, to overthrow and rebuild our government.

What is happening ?

This is a copy from Bill Murchison's previous column of one day previous.

Strange, it has the exact same title. ???
