Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Just what we need right now -- war crimes trials for top Bush officials. Don Rumsfeld, say, or even Dick Cheney. Stick 'em in the dock. Make 'em confess the awful things they did to protect America. Slather on the tar and throw a bag of feathers their way. Just what's needed to launch a new administration pledged to bring Americans together.

Sigh. They just don't get it, over on the political left, whence issues the cry for vengeance against any who authorized or participated in "illegal" offenses directed at routing out post-9/11 terrorists and thwarting their ability to harm us.

On MSNBC's Morning Joe, an editor for the Financial Times can't see why there's any problem with showing how moral we are by going after those connected with the waterboarding of terrorists. Congressman John Conyers of New York, chairman of the House Rules Committee, is whomping up an inquiry into the Bush administration's interrogation and confinement policies for terrorists. Michael Ratner, president of something called the Center for Constitutional Rights, is the party who says he has evidence for war crimes trials.

What fun -- show the world what a nutty place America really is: executive and congressional power changes hands, and it's off to the courthouse to put away the losers in a nice quiet place. Nothing, huh, like showing your country's enemies how much your human side sympathizes with them! The wonders that this approach to abstract justice would do for the economy and national unity are almost indescribable.

Barack Obama, displaying a maturity larger than his campaign rhetoric sometimes suggested, told George Stephanopoulos on "This Week" that he isn't much in favor of the lynch party's aspirations, preferring as he does "to look forward as opposed to looking backwards."

Indeed. Why, he asked, would he want CIA agents "to suddenly feel like they've got to spend all their time looking over their shoulders"? Why -- an equally central, if on this occasion unremarked concern -- would America want to make atonement before its enemies did? To what end? That they might call off the whole jihad?

Obama indicated, further, he wasn't even going to rush out and padlock the Guantanamo Bay detention center, springing, in one way or another, "a bunch of folks that have been detained, many of whom may be very dangerous who have not been put on trial and have not gone through some adjudication."

Barack Obama, only a few days away from taking over the White House, is impressing conservatives more than he is some of those barely able to acknowledge George W. Bush's membership in the human race. You almost wonder if he planned this month as a good-cop, bad-cop routine: Work with me, Republicans, or I'll throw you to the loonies!

We probably may assume no Bush administration official is going on trial for Jack Bauer-like zeal in defense of the country: one reason being the admiration that hard-nosed, Bauer-like attitudes toward bad guys command in the real America.

That conservatives would yearn to beat terrorists within an inch of their lives is high-grade malarkey. It's indisputable that they make room in their worldview for certain harsh necessities -- killing enemies, for instance -- in defense of life and limb. By contrast, liberal ideologues like Michael Ratner live, to all appearances, in Never-Never Land. First they seem to suppose no malign consequences from accommodating enemies. Second, they seem to suppose normal Americans, as they watched those accommodations take shape, would smile patriotically and nod.

The times are out of joint, and not just economically. Who would have supposed, after 9/11, that the hunters of terrorists would command, in some quarters of American life, less concern than the poor, persecuted lambs they hunted to the ends of the earth?

Barack Obama's contribution to American history could consist in saving us from ourselves, and some of our grosser stupidities. On which view he'd better get started. There's a heap of saving out there to be done.

lets
see what the 'one' does on his inauguration day. I hope he will step up to the plate and fight terrorism without Pelosi's or Reid's idiotic ideals. In this I'm saying (I HOPE).

I guess
you can dream Eric. I don't believe a word he says nor any words from this dictatorship now
called the U.S. Congress with it's huge approval rating of ....9% and falling. These people are so brain fried from their 60's drug fests they don't have enough brain cells to connect together. They remain the eternal teenagers they were when they first discovered the euphorial drug escape from their terribly
hard lives. And they are criminals..what a joke
Conyers going to hold hearings..wonder when there will be hearings on HIS criminal activities. I'm beginning to think that 90% of our electeds should be indicted under RICO.
These druginfested clowns (probably still imbibing on the sly) would have more American's killed rather than stand up and defend this Country. Maybe they should try and really make
the majority of American's day. Obama may just be saying not now guys, wait til after 2012 and i'm reelected.

ISLAM IS A C@NCER
ISLAM IS A C@NCER AND A BL1GHT ON THE WORLD. This pan load of cr*p made up by "Mohammed" is the most prolifically dangerous, and expansionist BS "religion" to EVER exist in the history of man. The "HOLY QURAN" says to convert ALL infidels(thats all the billions of people NOT already infected with this disease)or put them to the SWORD. I DO NOT see Christians blowing themselves up, and committing unspeakable acts of TERRORISM, on dailyt basis. I don't see Buddhists or Hindus or the JEWS. Committing acts of TERROR. The West and indeed the world need to wake up, and quit being PC about "ISLAM". They won't stop EVER under we are under their heel, or we are dead. Well some of your are going to say, "what if they thought the same about us", guess what - THEY ALREADY DO. 95% of the "ARAB" and MUSLIM world already think THEY are in a holy war against the WEST and specifically the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Wake up Americans.

Obama's Enemies
The world is going to find out who the real enemies of Obama are:

1. Al Qaeda
2. Republicans
3. Liberal nutcases such as Move-on.org

I would opt for #3 but PE-O may have to find out the hard way.

Three Times the Show
They seemed to take like 10 minutes to post - my bad.

Tea Party
I don't know what the hell Obama is for. He has flip flopped on so many of his ideas that it makes my head spin.

I just hope that he isn't still for closing Gitmo and being 'nice' to terrorists. This day and age to many people forget to think and would rather follow emotions. (I was not born until the 80's, and unlike most young voters, I actually looked into the candidates.

Actually Eric (@ 14:32), rather simple
0bama represents Barack Husein 0bama--everything/everyone else is peripheral, to be used/abused/chucked as bh0 deems necessary!

TeaParty
You insulted drug infested clowns by comparing them to P-Lousy and Co.

John,
I'll forgive your triple post. It happens throughout Townhall. Of course, your statements regarding the "religion" made up by the power-hungry pedophile in the 7th century ARE correct.

question
hey regular posters I've got a question for you.....do you think PE O is trying keep some of his campaign promises to "bring the country together" or do you think maybe he got a dose of the hard reality of terrorism from the man who's waged this war and kept us safe for the past 8 years, and the great one is now pi$$ing in his pants from fright? I must say some of O's actions of late have got me wondering........

Those Poor Poor Terrorists
If you're interested in how things will work out, just look at all the Terrorist attacks during the Clinton Administration and the swift and weak response it delivered.
Terrorist cannot be treated like common criminals because they are not. They are dedicated to our destruction. Can anyone blame Israel for going after Hamas when they daily rain missles down on Israel without discrimination as to what they target. Sounds a lot like the V-2 rockets coming out of Germany in WWII. Fire them off and let Allah determine where they hit.

Obama's Strategy With Hamas?

Hey, O, you want a successful, low-level policy regarding Hamas? Send in the Bloods and the Crips as delegates, which would also help increase employment here.

Arabs have been fighting with one another for over 1,000 years. The issue of "Israel", while dire to both sides, is not the real point. If all of the Jews abandoned Israel, would the "peaceful" Islamofacists love us? Would they disengage from their aim of turning England and the rest of the world, for that matter, into radical Islamic countries? When Bush leaves office, will they become more conciliatory? Please. Even Madonna, who hates Bush, has been targeted for decapitation by Islamofacists.

pEBOLA, if you want to be named "Worst President Evah", then open discussions with terrorists.

I don't think that most Americans were hoping that you would give creed, harbor and abeyance to terrorists. Also, "hope" and "change" do NOT exist in the many countries that believe they are still living in the 7th Century.

Torture is morally wrong
There is never any justified use of it.

Against any human being, no matter what he's done, no matter what he knows.

It's that simple.

The sooner we conservatives unreservedly acknowledge this truth and move on from the mistakes of the Bush administration, the sooner we regain our integrity.

Hey Allen
Torture is morally wrong? Are you fv*k1ng kidding me? If they make some poor bloodthirsty killer, choke on a little bit of water, leaving no physical scars or deformities, H3LL I WILL PAY FOR HIS THERAPY. Poor...poor terrorist killer @s$h0le. Waterboarding has SAVED LIVES, kept this country safe, and thwarted more T-E-R-R-O-R-I-S-T attacks. Am i getting through to you. This isn't Vietcong style bamboo under the fingernails, cutting off body parts, or even physical beatings. I also say fv*k integrity in this regard, T-H-E-Y torture and cut off the heads of people they capture. You can call yourself a conservative, but even YOU have to give on this one.

Bush and Cheney Criminals.
Absolutely! They had no right to protect us from our enemies after 9/11 and to prevent further attacks on us. They should have done nothing and let our enemies overrun us and take control of our country and force us all to become Moslims. We have no right to be a free and independent nation! For saving us from our enemies and carrying out their oath of office to protect their country Bush and Cheney should be locked up and the keys thrown away!

That's the real reason why the left want to put Bush and Cheney and other members of their administration on trial. They hate this country so much that as far as they are concerned, Bush and Cheney are criminals for doing whatever was necessary to protect us. And if we made a few cowardly terrorists who, when placed in direct danger hide behinde women children, uncomfortable, well boo-hoo. I hope that when we get attacked during Barack Hussein Obama's presidency, and it will happen and I believe in the first year if not the first six months of his presidency, I halfway hope some of the casualties are loved ones of these America-haters on the left. They cannot stand the fact that Bush and Cheney's tactics in preventing further attacks on us were successful.

Actually Allen
when all Americans acknowledge that torture is beheading, cutting off body parts, or otherwise maiming people and stop thinking being harsh constitutes torture we'll be better off.

We should wonder when we became a nation of crybabies worried about hurting the feelings of those who would destroy us.

Allen in MT(!) writes
"Torture is morally wrong
There is never any justified use of it.

"Against any human being, no matter what he's done, no matter what he knows."

Suppose that you know that Mustafa knows the location of a suitcase nuke in some densely populated region. You also know that it is going to be detonated in 1 hour. Are you really willing to explain to the relatives of potentially thousands of dead people that they died so that you could preserve your integrity by not waterboarding Mustafa?

"The sooner we conservatives unreservedly acknowledge this truth....."

Yeah, you and McVain, and Lindsey Graham are all fine conservatives....

Jim

(Sorry if this posted twice -- an error occurred when I tried to post the first time)

Next four years will be on Obama's watch
Our security will take a major hit.
His Justice Department Lawyers believe in internal legal constraints of the Executive Power.
There will be total restraint on war on terror.
Therefore, the accountability of any terror attack will be Mr. Obama's.

Allen, Schmallen

Allen, all I can say to you is that I hope you don't live in Boston when AQ strikes AGAIN.

Personally, I would nominate Jack Bauer for the CIA, FBI, and Defense. Shoot first; ask questions later

Of course, AQ took NOLA off its most wanted list. Why decimate a city already decimated?

The audacity of steep learning curves
I may be wrong, but BHO's recent announcements that he will not rush to close Gitmo, of measured suport for Israel and of not wanting to hold a witchhunt against those who have kept the free world free and defended civilisation from Muslim barbarians suggests that BHO is that now rare thing, a moderate Democrat who believes in American exceptionalism.

If this is right then this is wonderful news for the entire free world. He may be able to place a brake on the loony left in the USA and in the process reincorporate the Neo-Conservatives, who were never anything more than Democrats who supported interventionist military policies, back into the Democrat camp. This would both keep the Democrat loony left under control and allow the Republican party to put forard a distinctive platform based on Reaganite values once more. And then perhaps we could have a Republican administration which didn't support illegal immgration, big government, lurches towards socialised medicine and calamitous budget deficits, even if Democrat adminisrations still follow such disastrous and short sighted policies.

Bill
Your scenario is stupid, and so are you.

As for your uncivilized name-calling, you might want to be careful, sport. You have nothing to worry about from me, because I don't believe in violence and I follow the rule of law above all, which is a fortuitous circumstance for you, because, without knowing anything about you other than that you are crude and ignorant and a brutish bully, I know enough about me to suspect that the most likely result of a physical encounter between us would be that you would get your butt kicked, kinda like the last guy who thought like you, didn't realize that even Atticus Finch had limits, and was carried, beaten and bloodied and handcuffed, out of my house by the local authorities.

If your principles don't stand up to difficult situations, then you are a weak and amoral man. You can put me in the "give me liberty or give me death" camp, where I will watch over and protect people like you down the hill in the "give me liberty as long as it requires no sacrifices and doesn't put me or my loved ones in danger" camp.

As long as we're namecalling . . .
Anyone who would sacrifice their principles for physical security is a coward.

You would-be torturers are filthy, pathetic cowards.

I thank God that our nation's history has been made by those who were willing to do what was right no matter what the cost. That people have existed from the time of the revolution up to the present who knew that it is the principle that matters, that wrongful means are wrong regardless of the ends to be advanced thereby.

People like you are disgusting.

Yes, I know. It is human to be angry at those who have and will hurt us and our loved ones, and to want to strike back at them. But it is not right. That is why we have due process, law, police and prosecutors, rather than vendetta code.

Of course, torture isn't even effective, which is one of the reason these silly doomsday scenarios don't hold intellectual water.

Kudos to Bill - Reply #1
A PERFECT response to Allen, the self-annointed goodie two-shoes enlightened moralist.

God bless you, Bill, for serving our country.

When dealing with liberals, I remind myself of this truth:

Liberalism is a mental disorder
