Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

This has to be the Entitlement Age, because nobody I know of would call it the Age of Common Sense.

You take these two, I suppose you call them, ideals -- entitlement to blessings and benefits on the one hand and shrewd appraisal of the way life works, and you find, I think, they match poorly, if at all.

Take the driver's license flap -- the one that arose when Hillary Clinton couldn't or wouldn't come out and say what she thought about New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer's proposal for the issuance of driver's licenses to illegal aliens. From the media Mrs. Clinton took a drubbing. She wouldn't say yes and she wouldn't say no; or anyway she wouldn't say either with any conviction, calling into question her credentials for taking charge of the world's still, despite reverses, No. 1 nation.

Put the lady's electoral prospects to the side. A matter worth more extensive chewing is the inability, wherever it exists, to shut off the driver's license argument on account of the sheer unacceptability of such a notion -- i.e., bestowing an entitlement of citizenship on non-citizens.

Let us see why this might be so. We could venture that in general you don't acquire privileges in consequence of being somewhere you aren't supposed to be. If anything, you acquire liabilities. Your job is to rectify the situation rather than reshape it to your own tastes.

Plenty of good arguments exist for rectifying and redrafting immigration policies that presently help no one -- those who come illegally, those in whose midst they take root. Is a grant of driver's licenses to violators of the law -- which is what illegal immigrants are -- an instrument of rectification? Or is it, far likelier, a white flag of abject surrender? Surrender to what? To the notion that racial politics disobliges America from making everyone in America play by the rules established for all.

Common sense tries to interject a couple of points: First, that when illegal immigrants start to receive the entitlements of citizenship, such as the legal right to drive a motor vehicle, it won't be long before they demand, or someone does it for them, new and enhanced benefits. Second, that when you start to break down the urgent distinctions between citizenship and non-citizenship, you debase and trivialize the former. Third, that it's just plain bad policy to break rules when you don't have to.

That's the voice, I say, of common sense: the apprehension of what works and what doesn't work; what one deserves and another doesn't. Common sense says that, even in situations where the maintenance of law is imperfect, you don't engender respect for law by rewarding transgressors.

Ah. But that's common sense -- a commodity that modern politics instructs us not to worry about when large voting blocs want something, or think they do.

Group entitlement -- this I want, so gimme -- rests upon an assumption of inherent rights. Thus, I may not be here legally, but look how hard I work, and what if -- here's the kicker -- some day I get to vote?

The privileges and immunities of citizenship formerly got conferred after some exertion on the part of the newly arrived. It's been a long time since exertion cut much ice with policymakers more intent on playing ethnic politics than with insisting on some degree of performance prior to the conferral of rights. Not even in the public schools is there much sense of a duty, an overriding necessity, to perform on tests in order to qualify for advancement.

As for a driver's license, and what the possession of one signifies in terms of personal responsibility -- shall we just acknowledge that responsibility isn't the point in New York; that vote-courting and -counting is the point?

The present value of denying a request for the automatic fruits of citizenship or the proofs of personal responsibility is so low you have to stoop to notice it. Of course the New York Democrats can always make it lower, with a little help from the voters.

The Common Sense Candidate
Common sense for the common man and woman, Gov Mike Huckabee is the real deal:

http://www.mikehuckabee.com/index.cfm?FuseAction=TruthSquad .Immigration

It's working in 18 states - no big deal
Why don't you talk to the governors of the 18 states that do give driver's license's to illegals? In New Mexico, the program has been very successful, and I'm sure that's the case in other states. Better to have the illegals tested for their driving skills than to have them illegally on the road as well as in our our country. And of course most of the terrorists have come across the Canadian border not the Mexican border so the fence is a big joke in terms of being a deterrent to terrorism. It just makes the United States government look stupid. Let's tear down that wall and make our country respected around the world again.

National ID Card
The way to solve the voting/ social security/ employment problem is to have a national ID card. This should be the only form of ID allowed to vote, board airplanes, register for school, or claim any entitlements. Then the states can issue whatever BS policies they want. Those actively seeking to undermine voting results will be stopped by this and may actually do what is right for the citizens they are supposed to be representing when this loophole is closed.

BrianR is right
This isn't about driving, it's about everything else you can do with a driver's license.

The language aspect (can't read English to take a test or read the signs) doesn't really hold water, if "driving" is the issue. I've driven safely -- and legally -- throughout the world in places where I couldn't even make a WAG at reading the language. Navigated train systems too -- thank heaven for color-coding.

Not having a license doesn't keep anyone off the road in California, believe me. It IS an impediment to fully establishing a convenient, participatory, and thoroughly illegal life in America.

Chopper John
I agree with you, here in Nashville (this is just one case) we had one illegal who had been kicked out, but returned. He had been arrested 17 times for DUI/DWI reckless driving, and once for assaulting a cop. He was finally taken off the streets after killing a couple and and leaving their two children orphans. Don't reward people for breaking the law with a drivers license. There is no excuse for this type of thing, Hillary and most politicians don't care because they don't have to really deal with it. Those blleding hearts that are all for this (I know this sounds cold) need to be personally touch by an illegal in a big, bad way and mybe they will pull their heads out.

LOL, TruLib
Why not?

We pay for everything else for them!

A Way to Avoid This Conflict
The easiest way to fix the illegals driving with no licenses problem without giving them licenses is to hire them all chauffeurs.

foxfire22 + the cheap head of lettuce.
__You are so correct about those employers who are getting rich, while scamming America. You will find property owners, who lease, and rent to the illegals are also scamming America. Those who employ them do not need to pay the fees that every legally operated business pays. Those who house them do not need to claim their rent profit, has illegals do not file income tax returns, or deduct housing expense. These property owners can also let unsafe building conditions to exist, because they do not worry about an illegal complaining. These people are so greedy they will not even use their profit to assist, and sponser, these illegals become legal. It's their own private slave trade taking advantage of them. I think we should call them out, call their names out in public! Expose the slave traders, and their political party donations.

Licenses are a red herring
You don't have to have a state-issued license to drive a car; I'm not aware of any state that doesn't honor legally-issued drivers licenses from one's country of origin.

Just like you don't have to get a Mexican license to drive in Mexico. Your American license is perfectly legal.

However, with that state license, the illegal alien now has photo ID good for boarding a plane, voting (when was the last time you had to produce proof of citizenship, let's face it), applying for a job (even though it's against the law... but so is their mere presence in the country), and other things.

Pretty darn well in So. Cal. go research how much the FBI reports on a drop in crime in San Diego after Hunter got that part of the fence built! AND he only built two layers of the three layers authorized!

BloodABoilin
o.k. have them take a bus or ride a bike, I was just trying to be realistic. My daughter is actually taking drivers training now, and if there was a way to make safer drivers, I'd be for it. Maybe, as you say it wouldn't work. No-one is going to listen to me anyway.

Btw, just how well are those fences working? Its pathetic and we are going to have to be realistic. Bring back some sort of workers program anything is better than the crazy system we have now.

Hillary's answer
I pretty sure Hillary's answer to the question of driver's licenses for the "undocumented" was "I'm for them and against them and it's all Bush's fault." What is so hard to understand about such a postion. Who in their right mind would expect a presidential candidate to not have a nuianced position on such a question?

Why Do They Giving Them A License?
The problem with licensing illegals to drive is not with the skills.
The problem is that states were catching them driving without a license. You can’t do much about dealing with the problem with them driving without insurance if they don’t have a license, so the state decides to give them a license so that they can enforce the insurance issue.

If we can’t put them in jail for crimes, what are you going to do if they kill someone while driving? Well, they deport them. The families of the victim are left with nothing.

It comes back around to the fact that we have let those benefiting from illegal immigration shackle us with these problems, and I for one am fed up.

I’m more upset with those who brought this problem upon us than I am with the illegals.

I hope everyone is enjoying there cheap head of lettuce.

Taft, how does a license make
one a better driver? Teens take the drivers test (after taking Drivers Ed, I might add...) and have the highest rate of accidents.

Does not having a license stop a criminal from driving? Do you want me to believe that someone is going to be deterred from driving because they don't have a license after they have snuck into this country illegally?

And, just for the record...what is wrong with the bus? Or a bicycle? I didn't drive until I was an adult. I took the bus!!! Many, many people I know use public transportation rather than drive. Is this not suitable for illegals? If that is your position, can you please explain why they can't avail themselves of public transportation and need a universally accepted form of identification to get back and forth to the day laborer "shape-up" point while ostensibly automatically making them "better drivers".

What a load of horse manure!!!!!

Politics As Usual
The powers that be only have a year to get this done so that they can get them registered to vote.

The congress has dropped the whole subject of illegal immigration because they intend to legalize them at a later day.

It’s more important right now to play politics and improve there position for the election.
Isn’t that the way government has functioned at least as long as I have been alive, which is a long time.

The solution to illegal immigration is a simple one. It has been restated so many times here that we should know it by heart.

There’s no will to get it done by Washington.

It is obvious that someone in high places is pulling the strings to make this nation part of a one world government, because the way that you make that happen is to destroy your sovereignty. And I don’t mean Bush. This has been going on longer than 8 years. This has been going on since the late 60’s.

We have been tearing down the walls of Americanism for decades.

The idea behind immigration is assimilation of immigrants into your culture.

They’re supposed to learn your language, your history, and laws.

Though they bring there culture with them, it is understood that they are embracing a new homeland, not establishing there own little country in our country.

I’m afraid American citizens have let this creep in the back door and I don’t know if we will ever get it totally under control.

They already demand more now...
"Common sense tries to interject a couple of points: First, that when illegal immigrants start to receive the entitlements of citizenship, such as the legal right to drive a motor vehicle, it won't be long before they demand, or someone does it for them, new and enhanced benefits."

I assume you're making a rhetorical point here, because illegal immigrants already are demanding more with the help of many politicians and others.

Another great article on this subject, too. We need to constantly discuss this issue or the media will just let it melt away and the problem will never get resolved.

No Longer Undocumented
If we start issuing official identification documents to illegal aliens, they are no longer "undocumented." It's a first step towards amnesty and makes it easier for them to vote.

What part of "illegal" is so hard to understand? Illegal aliens don't belong here and have no right to be here. The only rights they have are the right to be treated humanely when we deport them.

P.S. TO SAMMY
Should we not also pat for their car insurance just to make sure they stay covered?

For Our Safety
Taft, you're absolutely right we need to allow them the ability to take the test and get their driver's licenses so that they will become better drivers which will after all make us all safer. Of course we should also subsidize their purchase of cars so that they can buy safer late model cars that will ultimately make all of us safer as well. Also, it would probably be a good idea to have government provided driver's training for the illegals so that again they and the rest of us will be a lot safer. While we're at it we should probably provide a government provided maintenance plan on the illegal's vehicles -- you know for everyone's safety of course.

Not illegal
Come on, folks -- we all know they're not illegal aliens, they're just undocumented workers. Give them credentials like driver's licenses and social security cards, and everything will be hunky-dory here in Canamerico. Then we can recite: "I don't pledge allegiance to ... three nations, not under god, divisible, with anarchy and injustice for all."
Le'Chaim.

Free Ramos and Compean

OK,
I surrender. What the heck, get 'em when you can.

M Sederoff
Why be one sided. All the people hiring them are breaking the law too. The leaders may be corrupt, Mexico has had a long history of such things, but the people themselves, generally, are just as good a person as the next earthling.

Left Policy=Layered Profit
__This license issue is another attempt, by the liberal left, to add another layer of profit. Profit from secured votes, and monetary profit for the increased bureaucracy, along with all private businesses riding its coat tails. Another layer of paperwork, along with its processing time, and fees, that takes away from America, Americans. In every entitlement, regulatory, program the left has sought to control, or gained control of, it has hurt this nation. Their base of workers in the bureaucracy, those receiving benefit of the bureaucracy, and all business, and its workers tied to it, are votes purchased. This license crap they cannot defend, and they waffle on it, has their is no defense.

Chopper John
There are over 20 million illegals in this country and nobody is doing a significant thing about it, it will not go away if we ignore it. Hoaving better drivers in the mean time will possibly save lives. Why not make corporations, the ones getting rich off them , pay for all these entitlements? They even hired illegals to build parts of the fence!

One World
The efforts to create a "One World" society proceede unabated. All the hue and cry over common sense misses the final, long range objective.
If all people have the rights of citizenship, there is no need for nationhood status. Sovrienity is no longer an issue and everyone lives under the same (tyranical) laws created by that wonderful group...the UN.
How could things get any better than that?

Moonbat Exterminator
Making it in English is a great idea.

Stop The Maddness Now
This kind of thing has to stop. By whatever means possible. Every person that I have talked to in resent months are outraged by the fact that these illegals are getting away with this stuff. The people that come have legally have to put up money, jump through the goverments hoops, and they only give them thrity day to get everything taken care of when they come here. Then they see the illegals come in and get all these intitlements. This is just plain crap. Of course I'll be be called racist for not being sensitive. But I don't give a Shat.

Folks,
please, you're driving me crazy! What's this testing junk? When an individual who has crossed our border illegally, or has overstayed a visa, no matter what their country of origin may be, shows up in a local, state, or federal gov't office for whatever reason, as soon as their status is confirmed, THEY SHOULD BE ARRESTED! Further incarceration and/or deportation to be determined later.

AudiR10
You are SO right! You post today is one of the most on target that I have read in a long time.

About 15 years ago, I wrote a letter to the editor of my local paper and placed a lot of the blame for what our country is going thru squarely on the shoulders of Dr. Benjamin Spock. I think his perversion of a whole generation of children and the way he brainwashed parents into thinking their kids were little generals who had to be obeyed is where it all started.

This is such an excellent point
“…you don't engender respect for law by rewarding transgressors. “

And I think the most important issue in the immigration debate. Lawmakers who arbitrarily decide which laws to uphold and which laws to break set an example for the citizenry.

People will decide that if the lawmakers aren’t going to uphold the law, then there is no reason why the common people should either. This is precisely what happened in Mexico. They had corrupt leaders, and so the people became corrupt too. I stated this on an article yesterday written by Michael Barone regarding immigration right here on Town Hall, and he pulled my post.

I guess it hit a little too close to home.

Chopper John
It's one of those "good ideas" the left keeps coming up with.

The illegals will be so happy to get that license! They will overwhelm the DMV to register their cars, and then do the same at t
he insurance company to get coverage.
Then when they ram into some innocent family, of course all will be well.

The left believes that the American people are so stupid that we will fall for this lunacy.

Watch how many illegals will be there to vote.

Taft
Make that test in English only. If someone cannot read the language in which all traffic signs are printed, they have no business behind the wheel of a car. Of course as others have noted, it's all about augmenting the Dem voter base, since there are not enough cemetary dwellers to satisfy them.

Taft

Taft
Are you sipping the Kool-aid? In my state alone the DWI's among those who drive illegally are killing innocent people. And even those here legally and DUI are not speaking enough english to understand driving. Get a freaking clue.
You want to clive here, learn the language. Then to come across the border, take a proficiency test...then maybe get a legal license. Otherwise, stay the hell out. They deserve nothing unless they demonstrate the true desire to be here, pay taxes and speak the language.

Chopper John
I agree, arrest them and send them back. If you have to take a test on US driving laws and regulations, its got to make them learn the stuff, and maybe save lives by being better drivers.

I'm sorry,
I missed it. Drivers licenses will save lives? How?

My question should not be misconstrued in any way as meaning illegals should get a license if it would save lives. Illegals should be arrested and sent back to the country from which they cameth.

IGOTTARIGHT
The Entitlement Society is not merely a matter of legal and illegal aliens; it descends to the level of the screaming two-year-old in the toy store, and of course to his Mommy crying at the security desk in the airport because she cannot take her binkie on the plane. (The saddest person in the world has got to be the sobbing Yuppie being led away by airport security because she refused to turn loose of her lip gloss for the duration of a two hour flight.)

People who have come to believe that they GOTTARIGHT to other peoples property simply by virtue of their continuing to breathe would have no basis on which to judge the right or wrong of awarding instate tuition or driving licenses or free health care or whatever to someone who is in fact here illegally. IWANNITSOGIMMEE is the way they were brought up, and they see nothing wrong with that so-called argument.

Christmas is coming, and with it the crowds of screaming beggars shaking buckets of change at the entrance to the subway (one week last November there were 9 of these organizations in our station -- in one week!) demanding Goodies for The Poor. And they do not want the kind of Goodies we give our own children -- nope, that isnt anywhere near good enough for TheMostVulneerableAmongUs! They want brand new, unwrapped, expensive, anonymous Goodies! And anybody who does not toss coins in their buckets is a racist, a bigot, anti Family, anti Child, and all kinds of other names.

To expect people who were reared to believe that everything in the country belongs to them whether they can pay for it or not, to make the decision that someone else might not be legally entitled to whatever he can grab, is hopeless. First you have to start with the two year old shrieking in the grocery store, work your way up to his mother, and in 10 or 15 years when some of them start to grow up, you can bring up abstract policy matters with some hope of getting through.

Responsibility
Bill Murchison wants to criticize Democrats for being responsible when he knows that its corporate America that is addicted to cheap labor. A drivers license will save lives but that doesn't matter? Lets really fine corporations for their illegal activity,

By the way, as an aside.
"Democrat" and "liberal" are not interchangeable terms, no more than "Republican" and "conservative".

Bush is by no means a conservative, any more than McCain or many others.

Neolibs are big on pragmatism
Pragmatism is, by definition, the practice of applying short-term practical solutions to problems while ignoring long-term effects. For example, a pragmatist might stick a penny behind a fuse or bypass a worn circuit breaker to keep the lights on, ignoring the very real fact that such practices can cause their house to burn to the ground.

Or pragmatists might write an illegal alien amnesty bill instead of shutting the borders down to stop illegals from invading the United States and murdering and kidnapping our citizens in the first place. (The Neolibs do need the illegal alien votes after all, right along with the votes of the departed).

This is the way Neolibs in particular, and politicians in general "think" (and you have no idea how loosely I use that term).

The vast, bloated, redundant, overlapping, outmoded and hugely expensive bureaucracy that is state and federal governments exist on pragmatism. Why do you think politicians sneer at idiologues? To politicians, those of us who believe in a code of ethics, morality and the principles of the rule of OBJECTIVE law are a direct threat to their free-flowing, anything-goes, patchwork quick-fix mentality that causes more problems than they solve.

BillK9 is right
Not only are we to surrender, but we are "greedy racists and bigots" if we don't. Fine. I'm a greedy racist and bigot. Now close the borders and manage immigration.

Stuffing the ballot box
Spitzers (Hillary's) Plan is all about getting votes legal and illegal. They want that Hispanic vote. This is nothing but back door amnesty. The politicians failed to protect the border now they are trying to make the rest us think that we should surrender because of their screw up.

And
along with demands comes the swagger and pugnacious attitude when capitulation is near or complete. Let's avoid that one at all costs.

Where have you been?
Column: "First, that when illegal immigrants start to receive the entitlements of citizenship, such as the legal right to drive a motor vehicle, it won't be long before they demand, or someone does it for them, new and enhanced benefits."
