Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

It’s that special time of the year when American history buffs gain a little extra company as we relish the rich heritage from our forefathers. Each year, as July arrives, I go on a journey in my mind back to 1776 and a humid Philadelphia where my admiration and appreciation are so deeply rooted. Our Founding Fathers gave so generously of their time, talent and treasure so that we could live as free men and women to this day.

Today, we have the luxury of looking back upon their heroic actions, knowing the how the story unfolds. But we lose something if we contemplate the events through the rearview mirror alone and do not take the time to ponder them through the Founders’ real-time deliberations and decisions.

When they began—prior to the drafting of the Declaration—political independence was not a foregone conclusion. Loyalists to the Crown were comfortable with the status quo. Others were fearful of the potential deadly consequences of rebellion. But there were some—exceptionally bold leaders like Patrick Henry, Richard Henry, Timothy Dwight and Samuel Adams—that had a different idea. They had a growing confidence that it was time for the colonies to emerge from the nest and soar like eagles.

They prayed and deliberated, and prayed again. Finally, with strength from God, they moved forward to propose, dispose and then compose what ultimately became our Declaration of Independence.

I have an image in my mind that simply illustrates the democratic principles that they sought to incorporate into our republic. The picture is a hand grasping a two-sided coin: On one side are our collective responsibilities; the other, our personal rights. Both values are essential to our way of life. The hand that holds the coin is none other than the hand of God, the giver of our moral principles.

At any given time, we have a choice about which side to operate from. More often than not, our culture today emphasizes our personal rights—our liberties.

The Founding Fathers chose the side of responsibility. They pledged their lives, their liberty and their sacred honor to one another. They weren’t driven by a need to exercise their individual rights. They weren’t driven by personal profit. They did not seek personal power. They knew full well that they might lose their life for the sake of freedom.

They to chose to be responsible in every way for one another: for the good of their family, their friends and for the nation. In this commitment I am reminded of the famous quote of Benjamin Franklin: “We must hang together, gentlemen ... else, we shall most assuredly hang separately.”

Fast forward to life in America today, 232 years later: We hear far too little about our responsibilities to one another and to country. Tom Brokaw’s book “The Greatest Generation” paints a picture of perhaps the last group of Americans who—in large numbers—understood and appreciated their obligation to their fellow man and to their nation. My father and my mother were part of that generation. They both served their country during World War II with the U.S. Army Air Corps. Needless to say, a sense of duty to others and to country was instilled into me from my earliest years.

Many today treat the Declaration of Independence and the U. S. Constitution as little more than tickets that allow them to lay claim to their individual rights—and they are not ashamed to demand those rights from the highest rooftops. The notions of giving back and feeling a collective sense of responsibility are foreign. Misplaced pride and selfishness are the rule. One wonders how long our nation will continue to prosper when getting—and not giving—dominates our contemporary culture.

The time is now for us to flip the coin back—from the side of rights to the side of responsibility—if we are to fulfill our country’s greatest aspirations. Let’s encourage each other this Fourth of July to regain that sense of responsibility and duty to one another and to God, as was the case with Washington, Adams and others. Let’s talk about it at our weekend barbeques and family gatherings.

It is worthwhile to ponder the wise observations of Samuel Adams this 4th of July:

We have no government armed in power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Our Constitution was made only for a religious and moral people. It is wholly inadequate for the government of any other.

On this 232nd anniversary of our independence, let’s reaffirm our desire to be a “religious and moral people.”

That’s our ultimate responsibility.

The American Patriot
The American Patriot to me is one who loves their Country and wish America no harm for any reason.

The American Patriot is male, female and children of every nationality, race, ethnic background and religion who wish America no harm for any reason.

The American Patriot are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom who wish America no harm.

The American Patriot ia proud of their flag and the Statue of Liberty which "welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed" and wishes America no harm.

The American Patriot takes pride in the greatest Warriors in the history of man - the American Soldier and wish America no harm.

The American Patriot looks at their sons and daughters in uniform with tears in their hearts and pride on their faces as their children goes off to defend the greatest country ever on this planet and wish America no harm.

The spouse and children of the American Patriot with anxiety in their hearts and faces shining with pride watch as their American Warrior leaves to defend America.

The American Patriot lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world.

The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness and the right to self determination and wish America no harm.

The American Patriot does not want to weaken America in dangerous times for political reasons.

The American Patriot does not put ideology first and America second to harm it in hopes it will learn a 'lesson'.

God Bless America and its' Patriots!

The American Warrior
The American Warrior is someone who is walking the hero's path. Someone who can walk into the heart of darkness.

The American Warrior is someone who frightens many people because they live in denial of reality, the American Warrior reminds those people that violence exists in the world.

The American Warrior has the capacity for violence towards those who threaten America and the American way of life.

The American Warrior is a constant reminder that there are terrorists in the land and those that wish to destroy America are already here on American soil.

The American Warrior on September 11, 2001, rushed towards the danger instead of fleeing from it, intent on defending and helping those American citizens in danger. Many American Warriors gave their lives that day and many more were willing to give the ultimate sacrifice for America and its citizens.

Most Americans are glad that they were not on the planes that crashed into the WTC and the Pentagon - the American Warrior wished they had been on those planes because they might have made a difference.

American Warriors were on United Airlines Flight 93 and defended unto death America and its citizens with the cry "lets roll".

The American Warrior waits for the day that they have lived for and trained for their entire life - to defend until death, America and its citizens.

"There is no safety for honest men except by believing all possible evil of evil men." - Edmund Burke

This 4th of July, I salute the American Warrior, both living and dead. Men and women who serve in the Armed Forces, Police Forces, Fire Departments and ordinary civilians who rush forward to our defense instead of running from danger.

The American Warrior who wishes no harm to America - God Bless You!

The Demise Of America's Women ...

America doesn't become a great nation and world leader again, without developing a culture that supports, encourages, and honors women. For now, the demise of America's women and the imminent death of the Black woman continue its path.

warts and all
every time you mention the teaching of history you should, if you are going to be believed qualify it by saying "the truth , warts and all. " read Zins peoped histroy of the united states States as your primary source and you canr go wrong.

MRCMRC - warts and all

From what I can see, based on your postings, you prefer living with warts. Granted, the Founding Fathers DID have warts. Medication can take care of physical warts on the body. But, how do you medicate a country of its warts? Alas for 'liberals', the Founding Fathers gave us the cure for that... morality and religion. Take away morality and religion and the warts fluorish, to our country's detriment.

I do not necessarily have faith in any one religious system since all systems are manufactured by men. As such, religious systems are flawed as man is flawed. Flawed religious systems do not negate the responsibility of truly religious men to seek God on an individual and personal level.

If morality and religion are two requirements for this country to survive, doesn't it stand to reason that religious men and women should promote religion? And doesn't it further stand to reason that standing against immorality and anti-God sentiments is also a must?

morality
pwerceived morality and religion not necessarily actual morality. just look at our behavior, not ncesarily our speeches. we are mostly a moral people which should not be as dificult as we make it because . after all, we invented the moral system. still we fall short. the problem is, as seen in you letter, the insistense thatmorality can only be tied to and come from religion. no, teach our people the truth, that we have arived at a moral system that is very definite on some things , very mushy on others, and, most imoportant and unfortunatelly , subject to change. we are caoable indeed must be copable, of chanf=ging g our moral code whenvver it is felt that by di=oing so we will surbvive beter, or more comfortably, or with a fuller stomach , or whater=ver. much of todays political difficulty comes from those who for whatever reason insist that our moral code come from a tnanscendental source and is therefore immutable. they cant however agree on what that moral code consists of. abortion for example.

Look at our track record.
After WWII our country built eveything sneakers, radio's, auto's, trucks you name it we built it. Look at us today. We have two truck manufactures (PACAR and Navistar). Two auto manufactures (who own's Chrysler theses days?)No one makes a sneaker here now. Can you find a football or baseball glove made here? Most of our clothes are made everywhere else. All this is less then three quarters of a century. How many years before our future generations will be looking to go to a land of oppurtunity? Will our great land just be a stopping off point? I don't think that's what our founding fathers wanted and sacrificed for. And let us not forget our founding fathers wanted freedom of religion not freedom from religion.

The root of prosperity
Can be found in the Homestead Act of 1862 which GAVE away 10% of American land to white male settlers. Many if not most of whom became extremely wealthy and built family dynasties that live on today. Real estate has always been the primary route to prosperity. Know your history and seek the truth. We live in a wonderful country that provides more freedom and opportunity than most but the playing field is far from even. See the following link for more information on the Homestead ACT.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homestead_Act_of_1862

the homestead act?.
actually you havr to trace it back to kansas nebraska to make any real sense out ot it.

Today is Independence Day
and I heard with my own ears, Obama speeking at a rally and he said "it is NOT our MILITARY that makes America great".

He seems to forget if it were not for our MILITARY keeping him safe and free; his sorry a-- would not be able to run for President.

He is not fit to be Commander and Chief.

MRCMRC

Your last post to me concerning morals and religion was slightly un-intelligible.

Would you care to try again? Take your time.

Bill Bunkley
Your column contains a lot of bunk. You scare me sir. You are apparently a member of the religious right that so scares all the liberals and keeps the democratic party viable all these years.

I cannot agree more with your final statement that America's prosperity and security are dependent on a moral and religious people. All your ramblings about the collective and shared responsibilities sounds like code for a theocracy and is interpreted as such by most on the left. While they want to collectivize our economy and greatly lower the standard of living through such foolishness, you want to collectivize our religion and moral code into law which will ensure the destruction of both the religion and the country just as much as the communists.

The two sides of the coin are liberty or tyranny. Our government was established to protect personal liberty. It enshrines a bill of rights specifically designed for the INDIVIDUAL. Patriots do share collective responsibility to defend this great nation from all enemies but that is the only responsibility that is shared among all citizens.

Have you ever read the constitution and the federalist papers?

There are still some out there
I raised my sons that with rights comes responsibility. You can't have one without the other. You have a responsibility to your family, your church, your community, your state, your nation, and LASTLY to yourself.
I showed my sons how to put this into action.
They protected other kids being bullied, helped their teachers and our pastor, they helped the elderly in our community, wrote their congressmen, then when old enough served our country.
This is a nice belief, but it needs to be put into action by more people, not just words.
