Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

Its deja vu all over again. At least thats how it always feels when Israel undertakes a major operation against the Muslim terror groups that surround it. Whether its Fatah or Force 17 or Hezbollah or Hamas, the story always stays the same. First, Israel appeases its terrorist enemies in order to promote peace. Next, Israels enemies do violence to her. Then Israel responds with sporadic outbursts of tremendous force. In response, the international community caterwauls. Finally, Israel retreats. And the cycle begins again.

Thats how it has always gone for Israel. And thats how it will go this time.

When Israel fails to dislodge Hamas and Israel will fail to do so -- Hamas will claim victory. Israel will go back to the negotiating table and make more concessions. And more of its citizens will die.

Clearly the Palestinian Arabs and their allies, all of whom wish that the gas chambers of Nazi Germany had been big enough to fit all the Jews worldwide, are to blame for the endless violence. The Israel-Arab conflict isnt about faux outrage over borders or supposed anger over refugees. Its about the Arab desire to wipe Israel off the map. The Arabs arent concerned about an independent Palestinian Arab state -- after all, theyve been spending billions on rockets instead of working toilets. When Israel handed over the Gaza Strip, including beautiful Jewish-built greenhouses, the Palestinian Arabs promptly razed the greenhouses and elected Hamas. The Arabs are concerned about killing Jews.

So the Palestinian Arabs arent any mystery. The real mystery is the utterly suicidal nature of the Israeli government.

Israel always concedes. Israel always leaves her enemies intact. Israel always stops short. This conflict continues because Israel refuses to end it.

But why?

There are three major reasons why Israel, like Europe, is more interested in appeasement than victory.

First, Israel is filled with tired Israelis. After 60 years of unceasing war, Israels population is exhausted. They dont have the willpower to withstand the constant battering of the Europeans and the leftist Americans and the Russians and the Chinese. They want peace, and they want it now. They dont want to see their children drafted and killed in Gaza or in Jenin.

The Israelis are tired. And because they are tired, they have become foolishly optimistic. Things cant get much worse, the Israelis think to themselves. Things have to get better. Maybe this time -- this time -- if we just give until it hurts, theyll stop hating us.

And so they give until it hurts. Until it agonizes. Until it kills. And they wont stop giving until they have nothing left to give.

Second, Israels governmental system promotes centrism. Even if most Israelis found the intestinal fortitude to push for destruction of their enemies, the governmental system would prevent it. Israel, unlike the United States, has a parliamentary government. This means that every elected prime minister must forge a coalition with those across the aisle in order to maintain power. Every Israeli government is a conglomeration of rightists, leftists, and centrists. That is why Kadima, a center-right government led by Ehud Olmert, has hard-left former Labor Prime Minister Ehud Barak as its Minister of Defense. The moment an administration veers too far from the center, the government falls, and new elections are called.

Third, Israel has never decided on a founding philosophy. Israel was originally established as a homeland for the Jewish people -- but such ethnic and cultural sentiments are considered passe by Israeli policymakers. The post-Zionist movement, which accepts Arab nationalism but rejects Jewish nationalism, dominates Israeli intellectual life. And it forces Israel to apologize for its own existence.

Israel need not apologize for its existence. It must remain a proudly Jewish nation. For 2,000 years, Jews were persecuted in other lands. In Israel, they have a refuge. Not only that -- in Israel, Jewish principles can be promoted. And those principles are worth promoting. After all, it is the Judeo-Christian ethic that underlies Western Civilization. It is the Islamist ethic that underlies the murderous, terrorist-sponsoring regimes in the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Syria and Egypt.

In order for Israel to win its long fight against its Muslim enemies, Israels population must shake itself off and stand together -- proud, unified, and strong. Israel must stop making excuses for defending herself.

Until then, Israel will continue its losing streak. In a week or two, a cease-fire will be declared. Hamas will celebrate victory. Ehud Olmert will go, and Netanyahu will be elected. And a year or two from now the cycle will repeat. This endless conflict will end only when Israel decides to end it.

Another Conservative who forgets before Israel there was a Palastine

ugh
The Israeli case would be better represented if the people making the case were not such idiots.

First, the move from an occupation to a crippling blockade in response to the difficulty of maintaining occupation is not really a peace move. Anyone who suggested that jews should be happy to live under the conditions that Gazas did after Israel pulled out would correctly be recognized as an anti-semite. To think that the Gazans not being satisfied to live under such hellish conditions shows that they hate the Israelis more than they care about the Palestinians is true idiocy.

But Shapiro doesn't even get the Israeli system right. It is true that Kadima is a centrist party which contains elements from the old right through the left. But this is not typical, it is a new development. Previously the system went back and forth between right and left parties with coalition partners who were concerned only with religious control of education, and maintaining settlements on Palestinian territory.

And Israel is not so anxious for peace that it is willing to even enforce its own law with regard to settlers acting to prevent peace.

The problem with this kind of ignorant defense is it makes clear that if Shapiro was arab rather than jewish he would be capable of producing an equally clear (and equally inaccurate) explanation as to why the arabs were all right and the jews all wrong. And so the argument boils down to Israel is right because I'm jewish, the stupidest kind of defense for Israel, except perhaps for the argument that since jews were persecuted in Europe Israel is entitle to land in the middle east.

There have been Jews
living in Palestine for 3,200 years, DARON, albeit in small numbers until a little over a hundred years ago. Since 1891 when Jewish resettlement began in earnest, the Arab population grew from under 500,000 to 3.6 million today, largely from immigration into Palestine from other Arab countries.

history forgotten
Yes Andrea there have been jews living in the region for over 3000 years. But there never has been a nation called Palestine. It is a historical fraud to say there ever was. There has never been an autonomous nation of Palestine and the Palestinians themselves have never had any valid government or society of their own. Only that which was granted to them by the UN. None of the other Arab nations want anything to do with them and never have. The only binding tie for Palestine is the fact that according to the Quran all Jews are enemies and are to be killed. Until the leadership of Israel and this nation grows a pair, stands up for themselves, and puts an end to the madness of never ending war, the cylce will continue until there is no one left alive in Israel to fight about it.
When the Jews came to the promised land God instructed them to kill all their enemies as they came against them. One can see why now. If your enemy wont stop then you cannot. The liberal leftist mantra of lets sit down and talk about it wont work until your enemy has finally had enough or is no more. Israel has a right to live in peace. If her neighbors wont let her then she must ruin their taste for blood, by spilling enough of theirs to make sure that all who may come against her decide its just not worth the cost.

OBAMA, GAZA AND JOHN MCCAIN
Let's cut to the chase: if John McCain were President-elect he would be standing firmly behind Israel in the Gaza War. Obama's silence isn't golden, if he stood behind Israel he would say so. The Clintonization of his administration with Hillary as his secratary of state tells us what Obama plans to do; it tells us he plans to return to the failed polices of the Clinton era on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

If the Gaza War is still raging when Obama takes office he will surely pressure Israel into accepting a cease fire and like Clinton play the ridiculous role of honest broker in the conflict; the role that turned Clinton into the arse of the world when the murdering, Jew hating Yassir Arafat-an evil twisted toxic leopard who never changed his spots-predictably kicked him in the groin, rejected his peace plan and started the second intefada which relentlessly continues today.

Obama's silence foreshadows the errant policies of a profoundly naive and foolish man who is about to attempt an impossible peace and relive the disasters of the past. As Dante said in the Inferno: "The hottest places of hell are reserved for those who are neutral in the war of good verses evil." In wanting to be neutral in the war between evil Palestinians who live and die for Israel's destruction and Israeli Jews who want reconciliation and peace Obama will bring hell upon himself and make the world a more deadly and dangerous place.

Not lost
You wanna see Israel energized? Certainly, they're dispirited, when the American Jewish population would vote for someone who may well turn out to be a Caligula, and voting on the basis of the fear of another Crown Heights.

Certainly, they're afraid, because America is - like the Egyptians in Isaiah - potentially just another "useless Rahab." So many in the world have turned against them! Look at the protesting Muslim woman in Florida, caling for more, bigger gas chambers! Who wouldn't be afraid?

But it is precisely BECAUSE Israel is being pushed against a wall that it will survive - either that, or there will be a very deep blood-filled trench in all the areas of the world where the saw scale viper reigns.

Is this "THE" test?
Is this the test Biden was predicting? If so, it arrived before the President elect can even take office. But I hear that Biden has already been packed off to the Middle East and will miss his swearing in ceremony. Now, if that hypocritial windbag can do anything except threaten Israel with an aid-cutoff then I am a monkey's uncle.

Daron in CA remember this
Before there was a Palestine there was a Judea. Try reading the Read the Bible.

Besides the religous (silly) reasons....
Why do so many arm chair and professionals pundits and policy makers spend so much time worrying about Israel? No other foreign country receives this much attention.

Lobbyist really are amazing...

boodabear @12:21am
My point was that the Palestinian Arabs don't have an older claim on that land than the Jews, despite what DARON and others say. Take a look at the link I posted...it's very pro-Israel.

Now, I support Israel in this conflict for practical reasons, not religious ones. The only way for Jews, Arabs or anyone else to be saved is by trusting in Christ alone. But, it is still important to have a western national presence in the Middle East. As long as the Muslims are busy trying to eradicate Israel, they will have less resources to try and eradicate us.

Shapiro is A Child
He has been writing really juvenile stuff on TH for quite a while.

First off, there is no possible way Israel can eliminate its enemies as Shapiro suggests. Any effort to do that would result the ultimate destruction of Israel. Israel makes deals becuase that is the only option. Period.

Secondly, discussions about the history of the region are a trap. They invariably become a useless spitting matches about who built this or that stone wall 2500 years ago. Just accept that both sides have a legitimate, though irrelevant, historical claim to the land.

What is relevant is the reality on the ground, and that is that Israel exists now and it is not going away. The reality is that there is now a large body of people who are Palestinians and something will have to break loose for them.

Hitlers Followers
The small amount of humanitarian assistance to Gazians and the civilian casualties awaken anti-Jewish feelings everywhere. Jew haters search for any proof to start their program of killing Jews. The same Jew haters ignored when 400 thousand innocent Africans civilians died in the recent Darfur genocide. Jews everywhere have to accept that there are billions of vipers ready to pounce on them and are searching for every chance to do it.

Ultimate Reality
Hamas and Hezbollah are terrorist organizations supported, aided and abetted by Iran, who are dedicated to the destruction of Israel. It is irrelevant to comment on the sub-civilized mindset which supports this goal. The fact remains that it does so. There is a solution - it is painful, but it is viable:
1. Elect Netanyahu
2. Destroy the viability of Hamas and
Hezbollah to the extent possible.
3. Destroy the potential nuclear capability
of Iran.
These actions will lead, more than any action taken past or present, to a greater stability in the middle east. By doing so at an earlier date, it will save the world the consequences of Israel using the "Samson Option" at a later time.

Lon
You said: "Anyone who suggested that jews should be happy to live under the conditions that Gazas did after Israel pulled out would correctly be recognized as an anti-semite."

Indeed so. It's very apparent that Hamas is anti-Semitic. Look at how they've run things in Gaza since Israel unilaterally withdrew. They've hurt their own Semitic Arabs worse then they've hurt neighboring Semitic Jews. If you don't think so, check the number of Gazans Hamas has killed in the internecine conflict with Fatah.

The fact of the matter is, the advent of Hamas is the worst thing ever to have happened to the Palestinians of Gaza, worse even than the current Israeli invasion. The second worse thing was the advent of Fatah under Arafat and the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade.

But wait, the worst thing of all for those unfortunate people of Gaza is to have been born and reared in such a xenophobic, hate-filled, intolerant, murderous society, worse even than being used as pawns by their Arab and Persian co-religionists.

Unless Islam changes from within, the end-game of this conflict is a nuclear conflagration.

happy new year
Unfortunately this eventually will end when one or the other cannot take it any longer. The result will be staggering.

Cold Water
An excellent, incisive summary of the history and the current situation--which throws cold water over one naive American's hopes, MAYBE THIS TIME.

Even we gentiles continue to hope, MAYBE THIS TIME. Israel and America are joined at the hip. We are like twins. But not "identical twins." Especially not after 9/11. Israel is indeed a proud, very great country that can pretty much take care of itself--up to a point. It remains--and I've never heard it put this way--surrounded by Muslim terrorist enemies. Never heard it, that is, till I read this article. I had hoped that this time Israel would try hard, push hard, at the risk of loss of life, WHATEVER IT TAKES...go the extra mile to pave the way for definitive peace treaties.

But you've thrown cold water all over this hope and aspiration.

Youre telling me the Islamists are not interested in a two-state solution.

What then is to be done? Geraldo opines that only American troops over there can maintain any kind of long term peace.

If so, then let's go for it. What are the chosen going to do, just pick up and leave their homeland?

As for these loose canons in the Arab world, backed by Iran, both the canons and Iran need to be dealt with, once and for all.

I disagree
--
A limited set of objectives are reasonable for the Israeli government in dealing with Hamas.

What we may loosely call the "infrastructure" of that organization was carefully elucidated by Israeli intelligence assets.

Much better than Hezbollah was evaluated 30 months ago, and without reposing *any* faith in Israeli Air Force fantasies about how they could do it all from safe altitudes overhead, leaving the ground forces to be suddenly and inadequately mobilized to go in on the ground when the wing-wipers failed of both targeting and effective address of Hezbollah assets in Lebanon.

The character of the initial Israeli operations indicated that this time they had reliable intelligence about the locations of Hamas leadership and technical experts (including where these raghead sonsofbitches planned to go to ground - in hospitals, dressed as medical techicians, or in nursery schools masquerading as teachers' aides - if they were not all targeted and killed at the same moment, in one simultaneous, unexpected, and murderous set of airstrikes.

They also got the major magazines in which Hamas had stored their smuggled military rockets smuggled in from Iran), their Kassam-making materials, their concealed launch pads in residential neighborhoods, and the entrances of the tunnels along the Egyptian border through which Hamas had been bringing in these prohibited weapons, explosives, and other stuff.

Moreover, they did it with inventory largely developed by the U.S. Air Force for use in Iraq and Afghanistan, including the low-yield and extremely accurate small diameter bomb (SDB), which is designed to reduce collateral damage so effectively that Americn troops commonly call them in on targets no more than a couple hundred yards away from their positions.

And then they sent in the mechanized forces, ready to go in as part of a planned follow-on.

Might could work, if only to knock Hamas down to the point at which Fatah can kill them off.

--

Hamas caused Gaza calmity
This assessment is sometimes true. There is peace (cold) with Egypt and Jordan.True Israel has to exercise deterance and if Hamas violates they should be punished as they are now. EU learns though slowly violent Islam. So does USA. USA cannot show weakness and Bush doctrine was right. Hamas terrorists will pay the price as much as Hizballah did. Wht do you think they are not involved now?

"Third, Israel has never decided on a founding philosophy. Israel was originally established as a homeland for the Jewish people"

Right there you have the major reason why the
world is against the State of Israel. Yes,
Israel was originally established as a homeland for the Jewish people. AFTER GRABBING IT FROM THE ARABS AND DISPLACING THEM.

hater
Ben is so consumed and obsessed in his hatred of Arabs he sounds as though he needs to be committed for the good of himself and society. So all Arabs wish that all Jews had been killed by Hitler. Sounds like projection on to Arabs of his own wishes towards Arabs. When he says that the only way that war with the Palestinians will end is when the Iraelis "end it" it sounds an awful lot like the Final Solution to me. Gaza is the modern day Warsaw ghetto, Israel is the modern day Nazi regime, and Schapiro a tinpot Goebbels. In rueing the supposed moderation of the Israeli regime, he sounds an awful lot like Hitler who, in his last days in the bunker said, "History will rue the fact that we were so kind." It just goes to show that Islam is not the only religion that can be turned to the use of justifying one's own hatred and political fanaticism. Why do respectable publications publish this kid?
