Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

It's time for a quick quiz. Who are the heroes, villains and victims in the following scenarios?

Scenario 1: A radio talk-show host, Don Imus, calls the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos." Eight of the 10 women are black.

Scenario 2: Three white lacrosse players from Duke are falsely charged with raping a black stripper. After they are wrongly prosecuted, the prosecutor is brought before the state bar association on ethics charges.

These are not trick questions. The villain in scenario one is clearly Imus; the Rutgers women were victims. The villains in scenario two are the prosecutor and the stripper; the Duke players were victims.

Simple, right?

Wrong. The press has treated the Rutgers women as heroes and the Duke players as lepers.

There is no such thing as a simple victim with regard to interracial conduct as far as the press is concerned. Blacks victimized by whites aren't just victims -- they're heroes. Whites victimized by blacks aren't just victims -- they're quasi-villains.

The Rutgers women are terrific basketball players with bright futures who were insulted by a moronic shock jock. But just what have they done to earn the laurels placed upon them?

Members of the team have played their victimization to the hilt. One stated that she had been "scarred for life" by Imus' comments. Heather Zurich, a white sophomore forward, stated that "all of our accomplishments were lost ... we were stripped of this moment by the degrading comments made by Mr. Imus." The Philadelphia Inquirer calls them "wounded heroes."

Really, now. If these women are heroes, so is every 5th-grader who has ever been called a racial slur on the playground. These women have gotten positive national attention -- attention they otherwise would not have received -- because an idiot called them a nasty name.

Before we label the Rutgers players heroes, let's take a look at Jackie Robinson. Robinson, whose first Major League Baseball appearance occurred 50 years ago this week, faced down name-calling, an attempted boycott by certain teammates, purposeful spikings and an unending stream of death threats. He exhibited the uttermost class and dignity. In going about his job with such quiet courage, he helped shatter the institutional racism that pervaded American society.

Robinson was a victim of the deepest sort of racism -- and a hero in how he dealt with it. The Rutgers players were victims of an idiotic comment -- their victimhood alone does not make them heroes.

It is a stretch to call the Rutgers players heroes; it is an insult to call the Duke players quasi-villains. And yet, that is what the press continues to do, despite the players' complete exoneration. "As students of Duke University or other elite institutions, these young men will get on with their privileged lives," explains Terry Moran of ABC. "There is a very large cushion under them -- the one that softens the blows of life for most of those who go to Duke or similar places, and have connections through family, friends and school to all kinds of prospects for success. They are very differently situated in life from, say, the young women of the Rutgers University women's basketball team." The Baltimore Sun called the false accusation a "bittersweet life lesson for these young men of privilege."

They're upper class and white, so being falsely accused of rape before a national audience won't hurt them too much. They don't deserve sympathy. The Rutgers players were mainly lower class and black, so a single insult should entitle them to the royal treatment.

The press' racial bias becomes crystal clear when we look to the common factor in the Duke and Rutgers cases: Al Sharpton.

Sharpton was responsible for a false race-based rape accusation of his own -- he spread the absolutely spurious, vicious lie that white New York prosecutor Steven Pagones had raped a 15-year-old black girl, Tawana Brawley. Yet there was Sharpton, front and center, accusing the Duke players.

When it comes to race-baiting, Sharpton makes Don Imus look like Rosa Parks. Yet there was Sharpton, the man who incited a murderous anti-Jewish riot in Crown heights, demanding an apology from Imus.

And there was the press, treating the villainous Sharpton as a racial hero.

The press needs its black heroes and its white villains. But sometimes, victims are just victims. Sometimes villains are just villains. Sometimes there are no heroes.

News reporters
I remember a comment from a graduating journalist why she wanted to be a reporter. Her answer was 'I want make a difference". I remember the OJ slow speed chase, Every tv and news radio station in LA was having an orgasm covering it.
If a reporter feels they can hype a story, they will.
As for the Duke players, they were convicted by the press without any evidence. Because of the precived white on black crime, they had no chance.

right on racism
wrong on rutgers women. He asserts that this episode has resulted in these women being called heroes. Well, as I have pointed out previously these women have also been characterized as w****s and cowards by scores of posters to this web site alone. Additionally, they were not taunted on a playground, they were called w****s on a nationally syndicated tv/radio simulcast broadcast to millions. Who the hell is this guy to tell them how they should feel?

No disagreements on his statements about the Duke men though. This was a clear case of racism, sexism, and classism. Also, these young men were more than defamed. They were publicly labeled as racisits by the district atty of the state, publicly harassed and threatened with a criminal trial and jail time. Not to mention they lived under this cloud for 18 months.

Interesting....
An interesting title and concept, but this article fails to make any valid comparison.

There are no similarities between Imus/Duke/Robinson.

And paragraph nine is just a feeble attempt to blame the victim.

Nice try.

my 2 cents
When Imus went on the radio with sharpton WHY wasn't he ready with the counter-attack that sharpton was so clearly vulnerable to? Practically every piece I have read about this silly incident mentions sharpton's racist past - WHY wasn't Imus ready with the same facts to fire in sharpton's face?

When rosie o'donnell goes on record as defending Don Imus you KNOW that somewhere in the universe a screw has come loose.

It's a pretty sad comment on the US today that it took the massacre in Blacksburg to get this silly story off the front pages.

This whole Imus
thing and the Duke rape case are indelible blots on common sense. But, unfortunately, the norm for the times.

1 more thing
quickie quiz

What two things do the following have in common?

1) Tawana Bradley

2) The Duke rape case.

A: al sharpton got loads of ink out of them and NEITHER ONE OF THEM HAPPENED. I really think it is important that that distinction be made every time either one of those cases is brought up because sooner or later reasonable people will have to ask why - the pendulum will swing back.

Won't it?

Lame-Americans and victimhood
These young women may have been inculcated with victim status from childhood and now they have Imus to fall back on for the rest of their lives. I can hope not, but wait til one of them is arrested for drunk driving or shoplifting and I'd wager dollars to donuts that everything will be blamed on Imus, who "damaged" them with a stupid remark which normally wouldn't eclipse a paper cut to a confident and capable person.

White people, especially those with means, are a huge, target rich environment. They owe those of lessor means because somehow their success was at these "victims'" expense. This cannot be proven, but never the less, anything that can bring them down a few pegs is fair game. Lack of evidence or false accusations don't matter, it's the seriousness of the charges.

What lame, little people we've created out of one class and what big targets are another. The example of Jackie Robinson is perfect, but ancient history. Instead of courageous and upright people like him, we have spoiled, whiny, grabby babies, with a sense of entitlement that is totally out of proportion to anything they've earned or deserve.

Lame-Americans are un-American, or at least they used to be.

heroes
Ben,
Heroes come cheap and way too easy today. Real heroes accept the title in silence and pride.

You hit it on the head!
The Rutgers Woman ALLOWED their great accomplishment to be taken away from them. "Scarred" for life, give me a break. The team should have said "Imus, who?" and not given him the time of day. Imus will bounce back and MORE people will listen to him than ever. Black/white relations in this country will only get better when the likes of Imus, Sharpton and Jackson no longer are given the time of day. Sharpton and Jackson are the worst racists of all. We need to all treat each other with respect, regardless of "color" and be above all of this.

Fox whites
Answer: the kids from Duke were heros on Fox from day one. Fox continues to ignore other worthies falsely accused, tried, convicted, and jailed by prosecutors with less than pure motives.

Google Tulia Texas, where a racist Republican prosecutor put poor blacks in jail on phoney drug charges.

Google Wisconsin, where a US Attorney put a staffer of a Democratic state official in jail on evidence that the appelate judge called "beyond thin". Is it a coincedence that this US Attorney was dropped from the firing list at about the time of the indictment?

Google the innocence project, which has freed many from death row, saving the lives of innocents.

lgm
Pathetic. That all you got? So, according to your implication, all the other networks and news organizations with the exception of Fox are carrying the water for the cases you cherry picked. According to your implication, if a prosecutor is Republican he/she is racist. According to your implication, the innocent people in jail are there because of Republican prosecutors.

Do you not think that a problem with the justice system in this country is the possession of too much power by prosecutors and judges irregardless of political leanings? Do you not think that it is a fact of life that the wealthy will get better legal representation than the poor irregardless of political leanings? Do you not think that some prosecutors and politicians of BOTH political parties are corrupt?

I pity you for the pathetic worldview you voluntarily impose on yourself.

hypo-hypocrisy
bitchin' at whites - yes! Everywhere.
AND _NO blog will post any derogatory term about blacks :---[

Racist Villans?
Your column is great as usual! The victim or hero question is one not asked nearly enough. I thought you might appreciate some comments that I had written a few days ago.

The Duke University “rape” case is finally settled, but should it be? There are a few things that still need to be said. The cast of characters in this fiasco are simply unbelievable.
First: The innocent young girl who claimed the attack. A lady with a rap sheet covering several years and a litany of offenses that must take a few sheets to enumerate, three children outside of marriage, a history of substance abuse, no credibility due to past situations, who takes her clothes off in front of drunken men for a living. Outstanding!

Second: The lacrosse team members. Good, reputable, boys. Partying themselves into a drunken haze and hiring a woman to disrobe for them. By reports some were underage drinkers. What is the age limit for stupid behavior anyway?

Third: The DA who decides that evidence doesn’t matter if a situation can be exploited for political advantage. A man who holds back evidence because it would disprove his case and continues a case long after any person with an IQ more than 50 would have given up.

Fourth: The voters who elected this clown after the case’s fraud was public knowledge.

Maybe everybody involved should just be incarcerated in the same cell for a few years.

They deserve each other.

The difference?
The difference between how you treat black victims and white victims is simple, even though most people are too scared to openly admit it; Fact, There is no possibility that the white Duke lacrosse players are going to burn down their own neighborhoods in protest. There...I said it!

Hey, wait a minute!
There is another racist aspect to the Rutgers story that seems to be overlooked, and that is the assumption that these women are poor and oppressed. They DO go to Rutger's, don't they? I never had that opportunity, and I'm a white male.

lg
"Google Tulia Texas, where a racist Republican prosecutor put poor blacks in jail on phoney drug charges."

It appears from the MSM report that at least some of the accusations were completely credible. The fact that the investigator was recklessly ambitious doesn't change the fact that at least some of those he had arrested were involved in drug trade.

OTOH, where did you learn the investigator was a Republican? The Prosecutor doesn't directly investigate. He takes the evidence provided by law enforcement and decides whether it warrants prosecution. Maybe you can cite proof that the guy is a racist rather than just a zealot about ridding his community of drugs?

Judges don't investigate either nor in these cases decide guilt or innocence. These were jury trials any way that presummably would have had black jurors.

BTW, in this small, conservative Texas community, "prominent" whites and their own questions about the justice of the operation have been the turning point.

The behavior of the investigator is definitely fishy... but when I "googled" this town, I didn't see any unbiased info to suggest that the Prosecutor's being a racist was the driver.

BTW
Those cases represent anomalies, not common practice.

But either way, it doesn't justify what was done to those snobby, rich white kids at Duke. They deserve justice because it is right, not because someone else did or didn't get justice.

I want to see justice done in Durham AND Tulia AND LA (where the riots after the Rodney King verdict were supposedly "understandable" though people and property were damaged extensively)... and every point in between.

Heros
Jackie Robinson was a hero. The rest of these people mentioned are just contemporary people living in a screwed up world and failing to cope. Hey Duke players, hey Rutgers players (notice the common point here is that both groups play games) drop to your knees and thank God you don't attend Virginia Tech. Makes your petty little problems seem small doesn't it?

Duke Lacrosse Players = O.J. Simpson
Just because the charges were dropped doesnt mean they are not guilty.

It just means the prosecution couldnt prove their case.

Isnt this what conservatives always say?

Imus/ Rutgers girls
This is a great article that drives home the sickness of the national media. However, I strongly disagree on one point. The Rutgers girls were NOT victims. Being the target of an insult does not make one a victim. To say that it does gives power to the idiot who uttered the insult. Also, it would make every single person on the planet a "victim" at one time or another. I just hate this culture of perpetual "victimhood". The girls, unfortunately, played right along with the media template of their victimhood/ heroism. Scarred for life? I certainly hope not. If they ALLOW this moron to scar them for life, then THAT will scar them much more than he ever could. The joy of their accomplishment taken from them? If this is true, then I fear that any setback in the future will rob them of any joy of accomplishment in life!

LBG
You slander Fox, but just like most liberal Fox bashers, you obviously never watch it. Both sides of this case were debated on Fox almost non-stop for months. In your mind, only CNN discussing the players level of guilt constitutes "balance".

left angle...
I think you are a bit off here.
It's not that the charges were dropped but they might still be guilty. The facts bear out that there is nothing to substantiate the strippers claims. No DNA, no eye witness testimony, no credible character witness - NO EVIDENCE. Zero. As a matter of fact, the only thing that could be proven was that the stripper was there. Other than that, not one part of the strippers story could be proven to be credible.
This is not a case of a couple of rich boys outsmarting a prosecuter with high powered attorneys. This is a case of a woman who has reported rape before without a conviction. This is a case of a woman who made false accusations and a prosecuter who ignored evidence that would have indicated that this was a sham.
The fact is that there was no case to prove.
She had cried rape before, and been unsuccessful. She had been a heavy drug user. She had performed sex acts for money in the past. She had sex with at least 3 men in the 24 hours prior to the alleged rape. People who knew her reported that she had been acting irrationally prior to the night of the supposed rape.
This is a case of prosecutorial misconduct. Simply put, Nifong thought this wouldn't make national news and therefore wouldn't be publicly scrutinized. He used this to appeal to black voters in his district so that they would elect him to office. It worked. But this cost these kids their reputation and their education. This also cost their families their life savings and normal lives. All because Nifong didn't want to follow simple and reasonable prosecutorial conduct. He is under investigation by the state bar association and risks losing his law license for life as well as heavy fines, not to mention his own savings as these students families would be stupid not to sue him.
Had he followed the rules and the defendants hired high priced attorneys that used gimmicks and tricks, I might agree with you. But the fact remains that Nifong tampered with the lineups, ignored DNA evidence exonerating the players, ignored the history of the accuser, ignored the testimony of aquaintences, and spoke definitively in public about the accuseds guilt. There is no question that the fault rests squarely on the shoulders of Mike Nifong.
Lest we forget, this case was thouroghly reviewed by a Unites States Attorney, who determined that these kids were innocent. This is significant because the norm is to state that they are not guilty or that the evidence isn't enough to bring charges. But that's not what they said. What they determined was that it was obvious that these students were innocent.
Unlike in the liberal world, the law world relies on the specifics of language. That is why you can't understand this case! In this case, one needs to understand that the language used IS important. Innocent - Free from guilt. Not 'not guilty', not 'the evidence was inconclusive', but 'innocent'. This distinction may seem small to you, but as someone who has been surrounded by law his entire life, I understand the signifigance of using the words the USA carefully chose.
This is not a case of the 'charges' being 'dropped'. This was a declaration of innocence based on the facts.
But I do love the way you simply can't let a day go by without making a news story into an attack on conservatism.
Perhaps you are right. Perhaps we should have convicted these boys regardless of the facts.
Here's one for you: The liberal justice system must be different than the conservative justice system. In the liberal justice system, one is considered guilty until proven innocent, and even then they are still guilty. The conservative justice system is based on the idea that people are innocent until proven guilty.
Yet another reason to be a conservative.
Why don't you call Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton and try to get the USA fired. He MUST be a racist if he decided against a black stripper.

Left Angle
You have made some bizarre comments in the past, but you may have just typed the most ignorant post in the history of the Internet....no easy accomplishment. Congrats.

Huh?
Since when is Rutgers akin to a community college? Maybe Duke outranks Rutgers, but not by a lot. Rutgers is hardly a lower-tier university. So why are these women at Rutgers so "underprivileged" compared to these Duke players? I

f it had been, say Harvard vs. Miami of Ohio, maybe. But Duke vs. Rutgers hardly seems to have these clear-cut class lines that everyone seems to want to force on this story.

Left Angle: Innocent
LA:
Try to turn-off the "filter" long enough to understand that the NC State Attorney General specifically employed the term "Innocent" WRT the Duke three(3) because there WAS NO EVIDENCE of a crime. No physical evidence. No eye witness testimony. Even the contradictory statements of Crystal Gail Mangum were dismissed as evidence.

How long have you been intimidated by intelligent white males?

You can now return to your neo-Marxist alternate reality.

Stop Being Victims!!!
So much injustice in the world and so little time…….

When will people, groups, nations, races realize that as long as they act like victims they will be treated like victims? One look and listen of the ladies on the Rutgers’s team you know that the comments Imus made was completely unfounded. I was disappointed when these ladies, put into a situation they did not prompt or deserve, chose to be victims instead of taking the opportunity to marginalize this idiot. Instead of giving power to his words implying this will have a lasting impact on their lives they could have focused on his pathetic apology and express pity for an old man who’s mouth is controlled solely by his brain stem.

Unfortunately, there are the opportunists who see a quick payday and whose stock in trade depends on perpetuating this climate. As they pad their pockets they serve no one but themselves. The African-American community has many, many better role models, leaders, and representatives to continue to advance their cause. May I recommend sending the Reverends Jackson and Sharpton to Imus’ ranch to join him in retirement?

Imus and Rosa
I know you're young, Ben, and that your grasp of U.S. history is weak, but making an analogy between Don Imus and Rosa Parks is the kind of thinking that should have had you failing your freshman composition class.

Rosa parks did not simply refuse to give up her seat on that bus; she did so with an agenda. She was trying to create a situation, in the hope that this would offer an opportunity to seek real change.

Don Imus was imply trying to shock some people with his stupidity, which he did.

The two actions have nothing in common.

You are right about the Rutgers players, however: If they have been scarred for life by this idiot, they are unworthy of anyone's attention. It's time these ladies grew the hell up and stopped playing to the cameras for another 15 seconds of fame.

justpaul
You need to reread the article.

Left Angle, please...
Left Angle : re-read what Demosthenes has posted then re-read what Jeffislouie wrote... get back to us when you get an understanding of the English language.

Innocent, No evidence to either substantiate or cooborate the so-called victim's claims.

It was based on lies, and driven by a politcally over-reaching and out of control DA , using the race card to get re-elected in predominately black county in NC.

It's inexcusable, it's reprehensible. The man Nifong should be fitted for his own orange jumpsuit.

There are lessons that should be learned in this. And you should be about the task of learning. Is that possible, left angle?

Victim
What Imus did was stupid... but not illegal and certainly doesn't yield victimhood for these basketball players.

OTOH, being the object of a false accusation most definitely makes someone a victim.

Don't forget the fact that Nifong had political motivations AS A DEMOCRAT for pandering to black voters. He feared he'd pay a price if he appeared to let some snobby, rich white kids off when accused by a poor black woman.

Don't even think for a minute that "no evidence" would have been an acceptable answer. Judging by the deeds by various Knights in Shining Armor (Jackson, Sharpton, et al)... his fears were justified. The vultures would have descended regardless of whether the boys were guilty or not.

I don't think the guy demonstrated character... but he was in a no win situation with this. He apparently decided his best course was to move on prosecution and hope the evidence would turn up in his favor.

Victim
Gee I hope that the Rutgers ladies who are by far a very good basketball team can find a way to overcome being "scarred for life" and compete next year. I for one am a very enthusiastic women's baskeball fan and have found that the women are much better representatives of the sport and their schools. I also find that they have a quiet courage and appreciation for the sport. I am sure that the Rutgers women will compete quite well next year. i just wish that some of them had not, in my opinion, overstated the hurt caused by Imus. They are much better than that. Good luck and best wishes to the Lady Rutgers basketball team.

Imus
A classic study in media/shock jock mentality.. what he said was wrong without doubt, a case of letting the Cardinal mouth overshoot the Wren a**, and paying the price when it goes against "the home team".. he's been the left's boy on radio for so long. I find hillarious to watch them all (the left) either run and hide or come out in droves against him when his name is mentioned. Duplicity in it's finest form of insidiuosness.

It is the the hallmark of the left, I swear it.

As far as the player that said she'd been "scarred for life" by the clown's comments... how perfectly "victim". I'd be wary and watchful for her resume' coming to any company out there. Sounds like the person most likely to invent a discrimination lawsuit, in my opinion.

Once a victim, be a victim forever. She'll make it work for her. The courts and sleaze-bag lawyers offices are full of such cases.

Such is the way of the society with the "correctness" slanted playing field .

To Uncle Max: as long as there is money to made from racism, the pedulum remains still. Driving the wedge between races is economic boon. Forget truth, it doesn't pay.

Results
The better Rutgers players will start their professional basketball careers with starting salaries close to or over one million dollars. The negative results of Imus' slur will last as long as the choose to have them last.

However, the Duke players lost things that can't be replaced. One lost a job that started at $75,000 per year. That is paltry compared to a top basketball player. The other players lost a season of play. That is something that can't be replaced. And a coach lost his job.

Families had to mortage and go into debt to be sure that their innocent sons were not railroaded by an ambitous prosecutor.

However, the Duke players will straighten their shoulders and continue to have a successful life. But girls who are scarred by the words of an old, idiotic white guy, they'll have to struggle everyday to regain their self esteem.

My girls were told when people said by things-Consider the Source. Then put your head high and forget it. I think the basketball coach have conseled her team of stars to do the same.

liberalgoodman:
"Fox continues to ignore other worthies falsely accused, tried, convicted, and jailed by prosecutors with less than pure motives."

Whether or not you're right in that point doesn't take away from the information in this article. The Duke players were falsely accused, and yet liberals act as though they're still guilty...of something, or that they're privileged and not as important as the Rutgers women.

All of the other examples you give sound like they're also tragedies and should be investigated by the law, and hopefully justice served.

But it's NEVER right to say one injustice is okay just because other injustices continue to go on.

And if you're saying that conservatives are responsible for those injustices you mention then you're a loon. Injustices and their evils are done by evil people. Not conservative, liberal, black or white people, but by evil people, period.

And of course some injustices do go unanswered, and that's sad, but we're not perfect. I think the majority of us would end all injustices if we could, but we can't be perfect, we can just strive for perfection.

Al Sharpton and Steven Pagones
How much was the judgement awarded to former prosecuor Pagones against Al Sharpton and how much has been paid?
Has Al Sharpton ever apologized to Pagones for libeling him in the Tawana Brawley case? If so when?
Lastly ,is there a comparison as regards conduct here?

moral reletivism
Until we lose moral reletivism and get rid of the guilt superimposed by the reletivists this will keep happening. As to what liberalgoodman wrote, while I'll agree that those are injustices I see no evidence of them being purported in the name of racism. We desensitize as to what rascism really is when we try to label every single solitary thing as racism.

the Rutgers women basketball players
They are very good basketball players. They are the best in the country as a team among college students. They may have trouble winning against a WNBA team. And I am assuming that they are all passing their classes, progressing to achieving their degrees.

They are not heroes. Heroes receive accolades for actions which save people's lives, often at risk to their own.

Police (although, not all). Firefighters (although, not all). Unfortunately, I have to say not all, because some never get an opportunity to actually save someone or have to place their lives at serious risk. Yes, there are some of our first responders who go a full career without firing a weapon or entering a burning building.

Let's stop calling everyone a "hero" just because they accomplish something. Heroism is not merely having great strength of character. If it were, then the Duke lacross players should rightfully be called heroes, since they have displayed great strength of character through the past year, and with real loss of opportunity in terms of atheletic achievement.

Let's get real and grounded, and let our words reflect that.

liberalgoodman
You can google Wisconsin all you want, but those of us who live here know exactly why the US Attorney went forward with the prosecution and why the JURY FOUND HER GUILTY.

Wisconsin had just experienced vast amounts of corruption cases, resulting in the expulsion of several members of the state senate--both Democrats and Republicans. Some pled (or pleaded) guilty and escaped incarceration; some risked trial and were jailed.

In that environment, even an appearance of inapproriateness was going to bring charges. It's too bad that someone innocent was caught up in it, but not the conspiracy you wish to make it! By the way, it was the JURY that sent her to prison, not the US Attorney.

AND--there were other US Attornies considered for firing who were not fired, so to attribute one non-firing to one case is ridiculous!

Left Angle
L.A. posted, "Just because the charges were dropped doesnt mean they are not guilty. It just means the prosecution couldnt prove their case."

No, that isn't what happened. A prosecutor needs to have a prima facie case BEFORE trial.

The charges were dropped because the NC Attorney General's investigation found evidence that Nifong had withheld exculpatory evidence and that the complainant (Mangum) had made several different and conflicting statements regarding that night. Also, there was NO physical evidence of rape. There was also other exculpatory evidence and a botched photo lineup.

The NC AG used the term "innocent" regarding the Dukies. It's rare that any lawyer or judge uses the term "innocent" in a criminal matter. The AG did it to pound the point home: the Dukies were falsely accused by Nifong and Mangum and there was NO evidence to point to their guilt whatsoever. In other words, Nifong not only couldn't present a prima facie case, he had ZERO evidence that a crime had even been committed!

If you can't understand that, L.A., it's because you simply don't WANT to understand.

Racists...
Sharpton and Jackson are the racists as they have no problem with entertainers referring to female athletes of the Hammite race as "nappy-headed hos" so long as the entertainers are of the Hammite race. When an entertainer of the Japhethite race mimics entertainers of the Hammite race, Jackson & Sharpton accuse them of making racist, derogatory statements. The fact that Jackson & Sharpton refuse to apologize for making derogatory statements about a sub-race within the Semite race proves that they are indeed hypcritical pigs.

Racist Liberals
The patronizing way liberals and the media treat black people is so racist it's amazing black people vote so overwhelmingly democrat. They don't treat blacks as equals but as poor pitiful victims who can't make it without whitey's help. People should be judged by their behavior not race. As I have taught my children that there are only two races of people, the good and the bad.

I blame 24/7 news
How else can you explain the non-stop traction that stupid "news" stories get? What is the eager, breathless scoop reporter going to focus his energy on now? I mean, you just never know what worthless event will turn into a career defining moment for the up-and-coming Woodward or Bernstein. Cable news certainly has become a double-edged sword. Were it not for this, so many of these quasi-news stories would be over in a day or die on page 3 below the fold.

White men are guilty of SOMETHING
White men are all guilty of SOMETHING, even if provably innocent. Riiiiight.

And Al Sharpton who initiated the Tawana Brawley case is called in on TV as an "expert in race relations"?!!?!?

Here is what I wrote to ABC's Terry Moran who had no sympathy for the Duke 3:

"Terry,
I was falsely accused of rape. It's not quite the same thing as being insulted by some radio jock you never listen to, and having to have other people TELL you you were insulted.
Let's compare the two and see if we can't clear up some TINY differences between being insulted and being branded as a monster in wall to wall coverage for a year.
Did the Rutgers girls get handcuffed, in front of friends and families?
Did the Rutgers girls get called rapists? Oh, being called a "nappy headed ho" is on par with being called a RAPIST!?
Did the Rutgers team lose their season, have their coach fired, and were they expelled from school?
Did the Rutgers girls 'who were scarred' get anything besides sympathy from the media and their school? The Duke men were given scorn by the media, with feminazi talking heads spouting their usual drivel and were kicked out of their university.
Were the Rutgers girls handcuffed, figner printed, placed in a cell over night awaiting bail?
Sorry Terry, but your PC bullsh*t is being called on here bubba, and you may have noticed the response from the public to your ridiculous ideas is being met with scorn and disbelief.
Stop being a shill hack writer supporting PC nonsense and start being a reporter.
Oh, by the way, was Lawrence University a haven for "diversity" where many of your professors were not white? Have you written about THAT yet Terry?
L. Steven Beene II"

They could be heros
The girls there at Rutgers could be heros if only they had been given the chance. If they had said "We don't care what some washed up has been on the radio says. If he were worth anything to society at all he'd have a real job" and then turned to the Jacksons and Sharptons and said "Beat it, we don't need any help from the likes of you".

Then they would have been heros. As it stands they are simply innocent victims of both Imus-The-Idiot as well as the Al and Jesse Show.

Response to all....
Did any of you happen to be at the place the alleged crime took place?

If your answer is no then you really dont know WHAT took place there.

and yet...
Even though O/J. Simpson was found not guilty. I'm willing to bet you cant find a single repub/cons that thinks isnt guilty of murdering
Nicole Simpson.

Same with these "innocent" Duke Lacrosse players.
I believe that "something" happened between them and the stripper.

"Did any of you happen to be at the place the alleged crime took place? If your answer is no then you really don't know WHAT took place there."

Uh, were you there? I ask because you claim "that 'something' happened between them and the stripper." How do you know, not having been there?

By the way:
What "something"?
Was this "something" illegal?
Was this "something" racist?
Was this "something" bigger than a breadbox?

Left Angle
Something most definitely happened. A drunken stripper showed up at a frat party.

Imus - Duke
Over the years I have heard Imus many times. Much of what he said and did was okay - intended to be humorous. And he could be funny. I admire his philanthropic efforts - his ranch for kids with cancer, etc.

But our media has gone too far, some - like Howard Stern and Michael Savage - far worse than Imus. Many of our movies are garbage. Some indulge in gross and unnecessary violence. (Several Mel Gibson films are among the worse.) There is constant discourtesy on TV - Bill O'Reilly and Al Franken, for example - where people interrupt and talk over one another. Where is our civility? Not to mention all the porn accessible to kids, the violent video games kids play, etc.

Firing Imus hopefully will scare some of the others. Maybe a few of the worse will lose their spots when advertizers get nervous. Certainly 'gangsta rap' should be put in the trash where it belongs.

The only part of the firing that I regret is that it gave Sharpton and Jackson microphones to lecture the rest of us. Those two are a disgrace to the country and to the ministry. It's tragic how the media make them into Black leaders when they are buffoons and hustlers.

As for Duke, I think the three young men will be okay. Any right-thinking person will know that they were victims, that a crazy woman brought charges. I hope they can pick up money to cover their costs from somewhere. It is disgusting how so many faculty and students immediately assumed they were guilty.

I also have to hope, however, that young fraternity members nationwide have learned that too much alcohol (some under-age drinkers) plus strippers make for a dangerous combination and needs to be avoided.

It's interesting that all three crises that made the headlines within the past two weeks pertained to colleges: Imus' slander of outstanding Rutgers players; exoneration of Duke lacrosse players; and the unspeakable tragedy at Virginia Tech. Time will bind up the wounds caused by the first two. This last one, however, leaves many broken hearts and shattered lives that will never be fully healed.

Something did happen,
A bunch of young kids drinking were watching a drunken stripper. Not smart , stupid, but not illegal.
You are truly a nut case.
Nyfong as a representative of the Durham legal system, I hope it puts Durham responsible for all the legal cost, plus damages for deformation of character.

I also believe Imus shouldn't have been canned for his statement.I believe in free market, if people listen to him he has good ratings, then he should be there.
Like Airhead America, they went bankrupt because nobdy listens. I don't believe anyone should be on radio or tv if ratings and advertising money as not there.

Anti-white racism
The Imus affair was created to divert attention from Duke University while they innocent determination was published. None of the Hate 88 apologized and some even continued their racist remarks. Not even Duke Universtiy President Butthead has apologized. None of the hate mongering media on CNN, FOX, CBS, ABC, or NBC have apologized to the victims at Duke. Instead of apologizing for their very offensive racsim they created the Imus affair to divert attention from their racist hate remarks of the previous year. Sharpton and Jackson also said far worse about the MEN of Duke than Imus said about the women of Rutgetrs, but don't look for racist bigots, Sharpton and Jackson to apologize for their racism.

Anti-white racism, and anti-men sexism is alive and well on all the major media.

Just want to test how far you would go in permitting this free market.

Probably XXX pornography on prime-time TV would get great ratings. Would you favor allowing that?

Perhaps an anti-white or anti-black or anti-Jewish channel could draw a few millions viewers (a lot in the market). Would you want to permit those?

Maybe some rich Saudi Arabs would lavishly finance a channel that pushed Wahabbi Islam, a fanatical form of that religion. Would that be okay with you? They might not get great ratings but they would have plenty of money to do their thing.

And wasn't Imus really canned because of the free market? His advertizers began to run for cover.

right on the money, Ben.
Great article, and right to the point.

INNOCENT
Under our system of justice the state is supposed to bear the burden of proof. Innocent until proven guilty to me means something. It means these boys were never guilty because it was not proven.

Some thoughts
1. Nifong did not have a prima facie case. I strongly suspect that the Dukies' attorneys would have waived a jury trial and motioned to dismiss on the first day, and that the judge would have granted that motion to dismiss.

2. At the beginning of the criminal process there is a presumption of innocence. It is ONLY a presumption and it is rebuttable. That's what the prosecutor tries to accomplish, to a point where no one would have a reasonable doubt as to the defendant's guilt. The general public need not presume innocence of the alleged perp.

3. The Dukies certainly have a cause of action for a lawsuit against Nifong and Mangum. Both lied and continued to lie until the State AG stepped in. Also, there was likely some pressure on Nifong by the US DoJ which could bring charges against Nifong and Mangum for violation of the Dukies' civil rights.

4. Unfortunately, Mangum will probably never be held responsible for her perjury because she's a black mom and Nifong will plead that he was "confused" and will apologize. In the world of liberalism, apologies usually wipe the slate clean (unless you're a white male shock jock who dissed a black female basketball team; say, were the white girls dissed, too, or are white people not allowed to be "scarred for life"?). It seems to me that white girls would suffer even more if they were called "nappy headed" and "hos".

Duke laCrosse players
Ben gives an excellent commentary on the bias of media reporting in our society. But it is not true that the Duke boys are innocent.

What saddens me is that no one has pointed out the disgusting incident that brought about the Duke boys troubles...a night of drunkenness and sexual pleasure...albeit sexual pleasure from a distance, but nonetheless inappropriate sexual pleasure. Why were they not admonished for the foolish decision to rent a woman for the night? It may not have been to have intercourse with her, but it was certainly to satisfy some sort of perverse sexual desire.

And how old are these boys?

We can’t rebuild the moral fiber of our country until we reinstitute moral standards.
