Is President Obama's Afghanistan plan a step in the right direction?

Senator Barack Obama (D-Illinois) has been anointed by the mainstream media as a frontrunner for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. He's been a guest on "Meet the Press" and, more importantly, "Oprah." He's been featured on the covers of Time magazine and Harper's, and profiled in The New Yorker. He's received praise from sources as disparate as Charles Krauthammer and Richard Cohen. A CNN poll in early November demonstrated that the Obama media fawning has had a dramatic impact: Obama trailed only Hillary Clinton among Democrats.

Who is Barack Obama? He is a cipher running as a shaman. He has been in the Senate for two years. He has virtually no voting record; he has virtually no articulated positions. Ask his advocates, and they will describe him as "a breath of fresh air" -- but ask them about a single position he holds, and they will stare at you as though you are speaking in tongues. They will tell you, however, that Obama "understands" every position you hold. Clinton ran as "The Man from Hope." Obama runs as "The Man Who Understands ." As Obama puts it in his new book, "The Audacity of Hope," "It is at the heart of my moral code, and it is how I understand the Golden Rule -- not simply as a call to sympathy or charity, but as something more demanding, a call to stand in somebody else's shoes and see through their eyes."

Which makes many voters quite happy. People always wish to be understood, and Obama offers "understanding" as his platform. Obama is the first legitimate Democratic African-American candidate for president because he is an African-American man who doesn't threaten white folks -- he understands them. His race, to be sure, demands obeisance from white voters. Who doesn't want to see this country overcome its history of racial oppression by electing an African American? But Obama's "understanding" soothes the feelings of those same white voters.

Only one question remains: Where's the meat? It's all well and good to campaign on the basis of "common sense" and "smart government," as Obama did in his softball interview with Tim Russert, but no politician in history has ever campaigned on any other basis. Where does Obama stand? His own writings display the weakness inherent in his platform of "understanding": If you profess to understand everything, you understand nothing. Not every conflict can be glossed over by "hugging it out." Focusing more on "understanding" and less on questions of morality coddles the immoral.

Take, for example, Obama's "understanding" with regard to our enemies in the war on terror. In his new introduction to his first book, "Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance," Obama writes, "My powers of empathy, my ability to reach into another's heart, cannot penetrate the blank stares of those who would murder innocents with abstract, serene satisfaction." Except, of course, that Obama proceeds to "understand" those he has just dismissed, blaming terrorism on "the underlying struggle" between "worlds of plenty and worlds of want" -- a neo-Marxist interpretation of the rise of Islamofascism. "I know, I have seen, the desperation and disorder of the powerless," Obama writes, "how it twists the lives of children on the streets of Jakarta or Nairobi in much the same way as it does the lives of children on Chicago's South Side, how narrow the path is for them between humiliation and untrammeled fury, how easily they slip into despair and violence." This is a sickening comparison; even the worst inner city youths generally do not join up with Al Qaeda.

Obama's "understanding" leads to appeasement: "I know that the response of the powerful to this disorder -- alternating as it does between a dull complacency and, when the disorder spills out of its proscribed confines, a steady, unthinking application of force, of longer prison sentences and more sophisticated military hardware -- is inadequate to the task." What does Obama, then, recommend? Why, "understanding," of course, the type of understanding that draws moral equivalence between terrorism and response to terror: "I know that the hardening of lines, the embrace of fundamentalism and tribe, dooms us all."

There is a thin line between being open-minded and empty-headed. Obama's politics of "understanding" crosses that line. And in the end, Obama's platform is disingenuous in the extreme. His positions, when he takes them, invariably lean toward radical liberalism. A true politics of understanding would recognize that some things are not worth understanding, or tolerating.

If you haven't already,
check out Scatbug's take on Obama:

Perfect Candidate for the Dems
He's a young minority with virtually no voting record. He plays into much of the public's disgust with the negativity of modern politics; hence, "a breath of fresh air".

He, like the Dems did in '06 overall, can win with virtually no plans or policies. Just have a pretty face, talk about change without any specifics, maybe throw in a conservative-inflicted race-victim sob story, invoke a couple Clintonesque Jesus references, and he's gold.

Of course, pretty faces and rhetoric only run the country so far. The country's problems will outlive the novelty of having some new demographic as President (race, gender, etc.).

Frankly, I'd rather have the ugly, old, unsophisticated conservatives in power.

Obama
Excellent. Your powers of empathy, your ability to reach into another's heart, have allowed you to understand and articulate a very good reason why this nice guy isn't ready for governing prime time.

Yuk.
Reading Obama’s quotes took me back to the days of “What’s your EQ (emotion quotient)?”. Gag…

Like most everyone else in D.C., Obama, obviously, is running with the Gramsci-inspired Transnational Progressives. Given we’re up against Islamofascism, how stupid is that???

Barack Obama is a Kenyan-American
His father is a black Kenyan (there are 20,000 white Kenyans) who left his white American mother soon after his birth. Barack Obama was raised as a white child who happened to be mixed race, raised by his white mother (whom the news media says almost nothing of).

What he knows about black Americans is what any white kid would know about black Americans, white guilt and disinformation.

He is a Kenyan-American
Barack Obama's father is a black Kenyan (there are 20,000 white Kenyans) and his mother is a white American (this is almost never mentioned by the elite news media.)

His father returned to Kenya soon after his birth and Barack was raised as a white child (who happened to be mixed race) by his white mother. This prepared him to relate with ease with white politicians.

What Barack knows about black Americans is what any white kid knowns, white guilt and disinformation.

This does not imply that he is not very capable.

FYI, most immigrants from the West Indies and Africa have little to do with black Americans.

Not a serious thinker
Good article. Anyone who sees the Islam-West conflict in neo-Marxist terms is making a huge mistake. The reason most leftists do this is because they have such contempt for religious belief that they can’t comprehend that there are people who take their religion seriously (because they themselves obviously don’t).

The real reason for the Islam-West conflict is that Muslims are commanded to fight the “infidel” until he converts or is subjugated (pays the jizya). If Obama doesn’t understand this, and instead he’s willing to spout the usual Marxist piffle, then he’s not paying attention and is not a serious thinker.

Obama
As an Illinois resident, I have had more than enough exposure to Obama to know just what he is about, in spite of the fact that he is a master at saying nothing in an eloquent and good looking way. The reason he spouts Marxist piffle is because he is a dedicated Marxist (probably why the media fawns over him so). The reason Krauthammer likes him is because they both share utter contempt for, and insist on misinterpreting the second amendment to our constitution. While Krauthammer may respect the rest of the Bill of Rights, Obama, like Nancy Pelosi and Hillary Clinton, would like nothing more than to see said document relegated to the dust bin of historical bad ideas. What makes this man so dangerous is his surface appeal to people unwilling to examine his stated beliefs. I suspect a large part of the population would vote for him even if they knew of his socialist bent. After all, both he and Dick Durbin have succeeded quite nicely with Illinois voters- to my everlasting disgust.

Kimberly
You just did the same thing as those who you accused, name calling and sarcasm. Clearly, we know nothing about Obama except the barest outline of his biography. We know too that he votes straight down the party line. We know that he talks in generalities so anyone is free to attribute meaning of any kind to what he says. Is it wrong to know more? Is it wrong to say so?

Obama
For the record, much of what Obama has publicly stated in Illinois could have been lifted straight from the "Communist Manifesto". When a fundamentalist muslim says that he wants to bring America to it's knees, I take him at his word. When Barack says something along the lines of "from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs," I tend to believe that he believes that too. Anyone can produce a self flattering website. He will play down his true leanings on the national stage, because he is smart enough to know that socialism doesn't play in Peoria (although it is very popular in Chicago). Why is it that people hear what they want to hear from politicians like him, and dismiss the truly revealing little nuggets as something they don't really mean? Blindness to reality only makes you blind, not idealistic.

The face of the future
Here in OH, Ted Strickland just became the first Democrat Governor-Elect in 16 years by running exactly this sort of campaign. He repeatedly stated that Ohio has problems (it does), described those problems (like we didn't already know what they were)- and then repeatedly refused to say how he would solve them, even in three debates with his GOP opponent, J. Kenneth Blackwell. In many ways, his campaign paralleled that run by Richard Nixon in 1968, when he defeated Hubert Humphrey in the race for the White House. (Remember his "secret plan" for getting out of Vietnam? He couldn't tell us what it was- because it was a secret!) And like Nixon, Strickland won in a landslide. I'm awaiting his first State of the State speech with interest- to see if he does, in fact, have any ideas whatsoever as to how he's going to govern the Buckeye State. Or if he will try to "Zen" his way through to re-election in 2010, after the manner of Jerry Brown in California thirty years ago. (Unfortunately for us, Strickland's Lieutenant Governor is not the basically rational Mike Curb; it's the borderline-sociopathic Lee Fisher.)
I'm very much afraid that all that was wrong with John Kerry's essentially "content-free" campaign in 2004 was that he was ahead of the curve. The 2008 campaign, on the Democrats' side at least, promises to be truly awe-inspiring in its vacuity.
I'd suggest that, for a new campaign song to replace "Don't Stop Thinkin' About Tomorrow", the Democrats might want to consider "Send In The Clowns". (The lyrics are highly applicable to their new campaign "style".)

BUT HE'S BLACK AND A VICTIM...AND
that's all that really matters to white, guilt-infested, liberal Dems!

Obama
The entire Congress doesn't have much of a voting record either lately though they just passed a bill honoring the contritution to the economy by Christmas Tree Growers. One might not agree with everything Obama says but at least he says things that don't sound like spouting the party line or blathering some political agenda. He sounds more like a man with a vision with ideas and ideas and vision are what have been lacking for years in politics.

You know
These comments remind me of this one-term congressman from Illinois. I can’t recall his name, but many of Ben’s sage observations could have been applied to him. No matter, I’m sure that guy never amounted to much.

Obama, Dems and our voting record
Most voters whom I have discussed this with always refer to "what a great speaker" and/or "he is so good looking", etc. It is apparent that when we look for voting records, what a candidate stands for, and what he will do with his office most folks cannot remember the last lie the candidate told. Our best example is good ole Bill Clinton and Hillary. The amount of lying from one speech to the next was never tracked back to them nor have they ever been held accountable for it. And good ole Bill was elected twice saying some of the most outlandish things spouted by a human. So here we are again with a guy who looks pretty, says almost nothing you can hold him to and voters flock to him like he is giving away free cheese. And if you ask them if they want to live in a Socialist country they have no concept of what you are talking about. We could go on and on with this but the readers of this column already know where it ends.

MA and NY voters who put their Dem Senators into office must be the dumbest people on the planet.

Who is Obama?

.....On http://www.progressivepunch.org which is a Liberal site...Obama gets a 92.25 liberal rating with a score of 100 being the best possible score...

.....Hillary Clinton gets a 91.25 rating....that is all that I need to know about Obama.....COLOSSUS

Barack is a phimp and Pimping aint easy
"Tell the bitches what they want to hear"

"I understand you baby" and "you're so smart and beautiful" and "I luuuuuv you"!

Ben's maturing
This is the best article Ben has ever written. I know my catch line might seem patronizing...I don't mean it that way, but this is definitely a well-written article; picking up on Obama's neo-Marxist philosophy is right on! As long as terrorists are viewed as being involved in some sort of class struggle, there will never be any real solutions. The proposals will always be limited to some form of throwing money or resources or status (you know, like the U.N. display of cultural/moral equivalence) around, only to have these resources used against us.

GunnyG
I'm a new poster here, but your stuff is hilarious! Keep it up (genuine humor has as its' necessary ingredient some semblance of reality...which is why people like Al Franken are not funny).

To those who accuse conservatives of "fearing" Obama, oh grow up! Barack O is a sharp, smart, educated guy who so far stands for little to nothing. He represents all that is bad in politics: image without substance. To be fair, both parties struggle with this (Dan Quayle was selected as 41's running mate for much the same reason Kerry chose Edwards: he was deemed "attractive" to females).

Someone once said that the difference between a politician and a statesman is that a politician is concerned about the next election whereas a statesman is concerned about the next generation. We need more statesman.

I remember when . . . .
America became infatuated with a little-known man who cared and seemed really nice . . .

. . . his name was Jimmy Carter.

This time, look before you leap.

poot
That reminds me of the scariest Halloween costume I saw this year: It was a boy, about 12 years old, sharply dressed. When asked what he was his response was, "I'm a lawyer"...What a scary thought ("99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name")

Senator Obama
As an IL resident (as is "planting ground"), I'm not keen on Sen. Obama.

I've had occasions to contact him on various issues and he always replies. His replies impress me as coming from someone who doesn't "get it" regarding matters affecting the family and normal society in general.

I've heard from various sources, and perhaps even his own words, that he is a Christian. It appears to me that his actions and his public comments (and "voting record") betray this.

Why would a caring and concerned father want to scuttle legislation that would prevent "legalized kidnapping" of children to get an abortion? He doesn't really care.

Why would he NOT want to have parents notified that their child is about to have an abortion? I would think he would want the opportunity to intervene to prevent harm not only physically, but psychologically, too!

Some father HE is!

Oh, but he's looking out for the "welfare" of the poor kid who might face an abusive parent if such a thing were made known. (So he says.) While there might regrettably be such an instance, that does not trump parents' rights and responsibilities to look after the welfare of their own children. Our government has NO BUSINESS (and ought not to be) interfering in such matters.

'Nuff said.

He walks on water
Greetings from Obama's home state, home of more jailed public officials than any other, I think. If you want to go on overload about graft and corruption, just educate yourself about the Land of Lincoln and Little Mexico on the Lake.

Ask a Chicago cop about an item on The Big O's voting record: they had to document every traffic stop for race and reason to prove to the world that traffic stops are a result of racial profiling. (Can you tell, with the angle of today's car windows and reflections who is barreling through a stop sign or red light? Try it.)

Right now he's on the fringe of the latest (almost daily) Chicago, Crook County and Illinois corruption scandal: a sweet real estate deal on his Hyde Park mansion. But of course he really didn't need any help from anyone, especially a shady friend. He is a successful author after all, and his wife just got a $200,000 raise, making her salary $300,000 a year, from University of Chicago Hospitals. There's a health care comment here somewhere...

He will stick his foot in his mouth eventually, ala JFK, but the MSM will tweak it just the same way. He is the golden boy, so everybody better get used to it. You don't have to like it, but get used to it.

Obama's Christianity
I can offer a little insight here. First, to be fair, I don't at all doubt the man's sincerity. Second, it should be noted that he is a member of the United Church of Christ. This denomination (UCC http://www.ucc.org/index.php) is extremely liberal. By liberal, I mean theologically liberal (although this often coincides with politically liberal); for instance, the Bible is a good book (though not infallible), Jesus was a good man (though not God incarnate, except maybe as a "God-filled man"). There is heavy emphasis on social justice and ecumenicism. Hence we see the spiritual foundation of Obama: his core values would be faith (somewhat ambiguously defined), unity, and justice. Hardly anything to criticize, but probably not the general impression of "Christian" philosophy.

Obama, Savior of Marxism
Obama says, "the underlying struggle" between "worlds of plenty and worlds of want."

Classic Lenin revolutionary rhetoric. Marxist theory is that the "haves" will never give up their "stuff", so it has to be wrested away from them by the "have-nots" through revolution.

That BS sells quite well in 3rd-world countries, but will it play in Peoria? The Democrats have gone down a socialist path, step by step, since the 1960's. Now they are presenting a guy who has no record (can't criticize "nothing") and who's black (white guys can't criticize a man of color without being called "racist").

He'll be groomed by the socialists now in power (thanks to Republican's ineptness) and when the Democrats dump Hillary as too moderate, Obama will take up the standard.

GunnyG
This little lady thinks Drop Trou is FUGLY. I never understood what the women saw in him. Naaasssttty! But hey, that's just me. I don't see why people are squacking over Obama either. I don't find him attractive. But then, I think very few politicians are.
But a Hitlary and Obama ticket would be funny! Which would be the prez? They both want it and I wouldn't expect either to give in to the other.
Send in the clowns indeed!

I am also from Illinois
Because it was a choice between Alan Keyes (a last minute candidate filling in for one who backed out due to scandal) and Barak Obama, I took a chance and voted for Obama because he sounded like a sensible politician (oxymoron?). He has been a major disappointment! He votes right along with the Democrats on everything and shows little to no independent thought. His socialistic thoughts are also a great concern! I will not make the mistake of voting for him for any office in the future.

Also, Rev, I had to laugh about the Halloween costume. My nine-year old went trick-or-treating as an undercover agent--part of his costume was a suit. It struck me that he looked like a little lawyer, and all I could think was--Wow, that is probably the scariest trick-or-treater this neighborhood could have.

Obama
Excellent article. I've been trying to figure out for a long time what people see in this guy. I watch him on TV and he has glib solutions to all our problems. He reminds me of Carter.

Obama:
A WOLF in sheep's clothing.

Mark that down and watch as it unfolds.

Go 48!!

r0_d2
You've got to be kidding?! Clark?

Try not to be too selective in your quotes. (Try some of these: http://www.wallbuilders.com/resources/search/historicaldocuments.php)

No, America is not a "Christian Nation" in the sense of required church membership, etc., but it would be fair and accurate to say that religion in general and Christianity in particular played a vital role in the founding of the U.S.

Fear
As a resident of Wheaton, Illinois (which by the way is home to one of the most conservative Christian colleges in the nation), I have really begun to understand why conservatives fear Obama.

Conservatives Fear Obama because he is a black man who is educated, well spoken, likable, and who has a greater understanding of white america. As a recent Time article emphasized, he is a black politician who doesn't throw race in your face. He doesn't try to play on white guilt, instead he talks about unity and responsibility, and how we can break down barriers.

This is the most horrifying thing for any hard core conservative who has an instinctive distrust of african americans. Obama cannot be stereotyped. Obama cannot be caricaturized. They can't tie Obama to Jesse Jackson or other such infamous black celebrities and they can't write off Obama by accusing him of reverse racism.

If you were in Illinois when the GOP carpetbagged Alan Keys into the state to try and stop Obama before he could rise to senator, you would have clearly been able to smell the stench of desparation of the Republicans. They were willing to do nearly anything to stop Obama from winning, including utilizing AFFIRMATIVE ACTION, to bring in an out of state black man to try and stop Obama. Why do I call it affirmative action? Because there were plenty of "well qualified" white candidates who are Illinois residents and who ran in the primary and got a substantial amount of the vote, who were passed up to bring in Alan Keys (who was never voted on by the people of Illinois as a primary candidate) after the guy who won the primary stepped out because of his sex scandal. I thought Republicans abhorred the idea of promoting a black person above such well qualified white individuals?

Face it. Right wing conservatives are deathly afraid of a black man that they can't describe using common stereotypes. They don't want to have to like Obama because then they'd have to start questioning some of their own inner stereotyped ideas about today's black America.

Race Matters
It's funny how everyone tries to think that people are all one and race shouldn't matter, but the government itself, asks what background one is for census purposes, and asks outright if you are a visible minority or not on national job applications and such.

They then have all the facts and figures to break down statistics such as education, income, household size by race. I just read a book about urban sprawl, and it was laced with facts and figures all broken down by race.

If race didn't matter so much, why does the government keep all these stats?

I guess we are not all equal after all. And the word visible minority is very degrading, how is this even acceptable? It's asking if you can easily be spotted as being a "minor" part of the population - the word minor makes one feel insignificant as well, as opposed to major.
