Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

As the temperatures cool off and autumn turns to winter, there are more and more opportunities to curl up with a good book in front of a fireplace. Here are the most recently published political books I’ve been reading in rainy Cambridge – at least when I’m not being forced at hemp-point to read aloud from Lenin’s Imperialism: The Highest Stage of Capitalism:

Bankrupt, David Limbaugh: Limbaugh’s Bankrupt is the finest summary of recent liberal outrages. He covers everything from the Democrats’ attempts to undermine the war on terror to their insistence that the federal judiciary remain a political tool of liberal utopianism. Every conservative needs to read this book before even considering sitting out Election Day.

Godless, Ann Coulter: Coulter’s latest book is perhaps her best. All the liberal ire surrounding her characterization of the Jersey Girls was an attempt to obscure Godless’ central thesis: liberalism is a cult-like religion reliant on flimsy slogans, bad science, and ridiculous airs of moral superiority. One of Coulter’s main points – that liberals consistently trot out victims as spokespeople to shield their arguments from attack – is fresher now than when she wrote it (see Fox, Michael J.).

Unhinged, Michelle Malkin: The American left isn’t merely wrong – it’s gone mad, Malkin argues persuasively in her newest book. Leftists claim that they’re the political viewpoint of peace and equanimity, but Malkin hilariously documents the leftist moonbattery that has plagued America since the election of George W. Bush.

The Politics of Disaster, Marvin Olasky: Olasky’s Politics is a well-reasoned analysis of just what went wrong in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Olasky reminds us why religion and the private sector are vital elements in any response to future disaster.

The Beast of the East River,Nathan Tabor: Tabor’s Beast is a heated and well-researched volume on the burgeoning usurpation of American sovereignty by the United Nations. Is the goal of the U.N. world government? Tabor argues that it is, and does so with gusto.

Musclehead Revolution,Kevin McCullough: The Musclehead Revolution, McCullough explains, is a movement of commonsensical, traditional values, freedom oriented Americans tired of watching their country torn apart by the forces of immorality. MR is an excellent primer for those entering the stormy world of politics and a useful reminder for those involved in its day-to-day battles.

Standing with Israel,David Brog: This book is a must-read for Jews in particular. Brog explains the sources for Christian support for Jews and the state of Israel, demonstrating that Christian love for the Jewish state is truly about love, gratitude, and Biblical dictates, not veiled Armageddon theology.

Diplomatic Divorce,Tom Kilgannon: Kilgannon’s book is a thorough, articulate and damning indictment of the U.N. His particular emphasis on how the U.N. undermines American national security is must-reading.

Size Matters, Joel Miller: Size Matters is a witty, irreverent and cutting take on the intrusion of government into our daily lives. It’s chock full of telling tidbits, and it gives an entertaining history of how our government turned from a carefully circumscribed guardian of liberty into a voracious leviathan responsible for hundreds of thousands of pages of regulations restricting our pursuit of happiness.

Do-Gooders,Mona Charen: Do-Gooders achieves precisely what it sets out to achieve: it demonstrates that liberals do indeed hurt those they seek to help and unmasks liberalism as a deeply-flawed ideology that cares more about the self-esteem of its members than the ramifications of its policies.

Winning the Future, Newt Gingrich: This book may play a major role in the 2008 election. Gingrich, the dark horse candidate for the 2008 Republican nomination, reminds us why he was once the power behind the Republican Revolution of 1994 and offers new solutions to America’s most pressing problems. If you don’t think Gingrich should run, read this and reconsider.

Cambridge
If this guy hates it so much in Cambridge, maybe he should have gone to Liberty University or something.

Of course I expect him to take advantage of the opportunity...who wouldn't? But sheesh, at least he could stop pretending like he's oppressed.

Monty & Cambridge
Monty doesn't understand that while Liberty University is an excellent school, Mr. Shapiro isn't going to retreat from Cambridge because some professors are clueless socialist drones. Any military historian will tell you that when you completely abandon the battlefield, you have lost. Having one soldier still fighting might not be good odds, but it is still a battle until one side gives up. Mr. Shapiro is our soldier on the battlefield we call Cambridge. As long as he is there, conservatism still has a chance!

Surrender
As docialists and America haters are comstantly calling for surrender in the war on terror, it is not surprising that they desire surrender in Cambridge.

Further addition to the list
Anything by Robert Spencer.

Standing With Israel
What would happen if the U.S. really backed Israel? We should help the Israeli's to resettle all of their elderly, women and children into Eastern Europe(i.e., Romania) and the U.S. for the "duration of danger." If Iran and other dictators would like to see Israel annilated, they will have to deal with the U.S. also.

Next, pull U.S. troops out of Iraq (when the time for U.S. withdrawal is possible) and send them to Israel to stand alongside our democratic friends showing our solidarity with our allies. This should satisfy the Muslims (especially Iran, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia) who want us out of their Holy Lands, and it would show the world we will truly defend the freedoms of our real allies all over the world.

Yes, most definitely, U.S. to opt out of the U.N. (Definitely not democratic nor our ally.)

THE REAL HORROR STORY...
George Bush is the first American President expressing Christian certitude in his Presidential decisions. God even speaks to Bush, and as the President told the press, he consulted with “another Father,” “a higher authority” than Bush41 on going to war with Iraq. If true, presumably God would have also told him how to win this Iraq war without all the mistakes, suffering and death.

The world has seen Christian certitude before and it’s not a pretty picture: papal infallibility when the Pope had armies, the Inquisition (intolerance at home) and the Crusades (intolerance abroad). When the Crusaders captured Jerusalem in 1099, they slaughtered all its inhabitants. When the Arab leader Saladin recaptured the city, he spared all the Christian inhabitants. So the Middle East is already primed for another war with Christian invaders; and accordingly and as the latest NIE confirms, the war in Iraq has increased the number of jihadists and terrorists and made America less safe. This is not praise for the enemy, but history and insight into why our “bring it on” cowboy President is only rekindling and fueling this centuries-old fire.

Our brave, innocent young men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan are fighting for a better world, but a leader ignorant of history and cultures can easily cause the opposite. The stupidity of World War I and of Wilson, Lloyd George and Clemenceau caused terrible consequences for another 70 years after the end of that war. Afghanistan is the right war, certainly a just war and the whole world agreed and was on our side, and if we would have concentrated our efforts there we probably would have wiped out Bin Laden and those responsible for 9-11 by now. Iraq is the wrong war even if hopefully we win it, and Iran will be another, but larger wrong war.

The leader of Iran comes off as a whacko, however, the Iranians and the rest of the world view George Bush in the same way, so there is a common starting point. Real diplomacy involves talking with your adversary one-on-one without preconditions, and Russia and China have forced Bush to make a positive step in that direction. And there’s a lot to discuss with Iran: the CIA in the 1950s, the Shah, the 1979 hostage crisis, sponsorship of terror, Israel and justice in the Middle East. But if past is prelude, then Bush’s diplomacy with Iran will be perfunctory and manipulated (as it was with Iraq), and likely God has already spoken to our President and told him to go to war after the November 2006 elections (as he did with Iraq in 2002-2003). When Bush finally increases the level of hatred against the United States to where it engulfs Pakistan, then we face nuclear terror, and Biblical Armageddon becomes real and a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Back at home, Christian certitude is present in Bush’s politics of division and hate. Nonbelievers of Bush’s Christian values and policies are viewed with contempt, instead of as fellow citizens in a pluralistic democracy. Civility has gone out of our civilization, and this type of Christian Right hate is now completely out of the closet with Ann Coulter’s latest book, which has been repudiated by few if any on the right who claim to practice the Christian message of love. Hate, hate, hate -- welcome to the new Christian America (not exactly like Mother Theresa or the Amish). The Foley-Hastert scandal further shows the actual evil of this "perfect" practice of Christian good.

“Good and evil” is a concept common in religion, morality and ethics. Obviously the whole world needs more good and less evil. But is there a practical definition that everyone can agree on and that lends itself to objective measurement. How about: GOOD is something that makes the many human lives better and no or few lives worse, while EVIL is something that makes many lives worse, and no or few lives better. Some obvious good in this world: Habitat for Humanity, St Jude’s Children Hospital, etc. Evil under this definition would include a considerable number of Hollywood movies, a lot of poison on TV and violent video games.

Measuring George Bush’s actions by this definition with objective facts, our compassionate conservative, Christian President does mostly evil: from the growing Iraq disaster to Katrina mismanagement/incompetence to “no child left behind” (children in extreme poverty up 20% since Bush took office) to the $3 trillion dollar tax giveaway to the rich. Particulars on the last item: SUPPLY-SIDE (trickle-down) economics is a bogus theory promoted by those who benefit from it. In a mature capitalist system, supply side never rules, it’s always the demand side of the equation that governs growth and well-being. Think about the 1930s Depression, General Motors had plenty of supply, but demand evaporated.

Previous U.S. recessions have been cured with only $200 billion in tax cuts targeted to the middle class, because the consumer (the great middle class) spends that tax cut and primes the economic pump. But George Bush has raised the debt that our children and grandchildren will have to pay from almost $6 trillion to almost $9 trillion for this current recovery, which is uniquely without wage gains, and which has shrunk the middle class that makes America strong and great.

Corporations (the supply side) are now loaded with cash, but there’s no place to spend it because they don’t see any demand. So many corporations are using that cash to buy back their stock -- WOW, isn’t supply side wonderful in how it fulfills America’s needs? As the rich-poor divide increases, we’re headed toward previous shining examples of trickle-down economics: South America of the recent past and feudalism in the Middle Ages (South America and feudalism also had no wage gains). This is such good evil by our Christian President and his myriad of engorged friends.

I see a dark future for the country we all love. Even our Constitution is at risk when a President says he speaks directly to God (witness how God/Allah influences and corrupts Islamic attempts at democracy). The Constitution guarantees freedom to all, and freedom for all from tyranny. Our precious Constitution binds us together as a nation, and allegiance to it is the definition of patriotism.

John Citizen Should
John Citizen has again cut and paste his nitwit diatribe against President Bush and Christianity, even though it bears no relationship to Ben Shapiro's article providing a good list of recently written books to read. John Citizen's anti-Bush, anti-Christian rant is nonsense, illustrative only of what a couple of the books listed above in Ben Shapiro's article: Ann Coulter's "Godless" and Michelle Malkin's "Unhinged." John Citizen is Godless and Unhinged.

Instead of engaging John Citizen is what is ignorance on his part, I recommend that readers of this site instead go read one of the books on Ben Shapiro's list. Where I live, it is raining and the wind is blowing -- a perfect day to find your favorite dry reading place and read with a cup of tea or coffee.

The Title of My Last Post
The title of my last post should be "We Should Go Read And Not Engage John Citizen." What appears was the start of my first thought about where John Citizen should go, but discretion stopped that one and I focused on the substance of my post anbd did not go back to the title.

Bolshevik Argument

I don't see politics as a conflict between rich and poor---to me, that's a Bolshevik argument, advanced by those who conceive the state as absolute, with all power residing in the state, and not in the individual.
I see politics as a conflict between collectivism and individualism, the Democratic Party representing collectivism with its taxation policies.
The path to collectivism inevitably ends in state-sponsored terrorism and mass executions of citizens, as it did during the 20th Century under the collectivist socialist ideologies of Marxism, Naziism, Fascism, and Castro's "To the wall Cuba."
The surest way to reverse and stop the spread of collectivism is cutting taxes. The lifeblood of the collective lays in taxation and confiscation of property.
Your labor and your property belong to you---not to the collective.
Tell them hands off ! ! and on Nov. 7th, show them.

Debt
If future generations are smart, they will repudiate and disavow the debt passed on to them by their forebearers.

Satirev . . .
your post is right on the money!

Most of the liberals who post on this board resort to the usual talking points of the "Hate Bush" leftist strategy (remember 1984's Emmanuel Goldstein, the elusive head of "The Brotherhood"?).

The philosophies of Locke, Hobbes et al gave us a legacy that should be prevalent today. It seems, though, that the economic theories of Marx and Engels, and the political theories of Stalin, have created an irrational socialist movement that strives for the destruction of capitalism regardless of the proven inefficacies of socialism.

DavidMac
Based on the last several years, it seems to be the "capitalists" who are bent on the destruction of capitalism. The explosion of debt in this country can mostly be blamed on Greenspan's easy money policies and the Republican spending orgy (although, in the longer term, obviously, both parties have done their share).

Who's in control?
Hey, John Citizen, guess what? No matter what...war, peace, Clinton, Bush, Lenin, Madonna, the Hollywood Left, the Christian Right and on and on and on...GOD is in control. Don't worry about it. And, if you read God's word instead of trash, you'd know that some religions are false religions that Christ warned us about. Furthermore, you are not to judge his servants! (George Bush) That's God's job. Things are going according to His plan. Phil Byler is right. What does all this have to do with Shapiro anyway?

Your Book List
You missed one book. "Where Did My America Go?"

The author has witnessed the actions of the ACLU and liveral press in their attempt,he believes, to carry out a plan to overthrow the American Government through political correctness.

The author has developed a plan to allow the silent majority to have their voice heard along with his.

The book is a compilation of what has transpired in America throughout the last millennium and crossing into the new century. The author tackels sensitive issues in political America today, about which many people have expressed their anger, but have remained silent except in private circles.

The book suggests that tne New York Times may have succumbed to a self-serving, self-imposed, self-righteous form of extortion from terrorists.

Through the book the author keeps asking the reader, "Are you outraged yet?"

He makes a strong compassionate and persuasive plea to join him on Flag Day, 2007 to wake up Americans and Bring Back My America" Just go to http://www.wheredidmyamericago.com you will want to read this one.

Lee Harris'
"Civilization and its Enemies" provides the best analysis and historical perspective I've read. He takes you back through the ages of to early civilization and traces the various philosophical perspectives of Sparta, Athens, Rome, and everything up to and including radical Islam. I'm doing it on audio, so I can make better use of commute - time, and by disk 3, (of 8 ), I felt like I'd learned more than a year's worth of western civ+ philosophy! Mr. Harris is possibly our era's greatest philosophical mind, and this is a great work! Ben, please, add this one to your list and spread the word!

Good stuff, but
here's my list (in no particular order):

Justaguy tends to look at things philosophically. He takes a look at religion, politics, and truth amongst other things (e.g. raising children). He has just started a discussion on what it means to be conservative. Hop on over and throw in your two cents.

http://jimmycarterscloset.townhall.com/, Jimmy Carter:
With a title and handle like that, you know it's going to be good. Jimmy, or O'Lovable Leader (he has plans for taking over Texas) has some very funny stuff on there. Want to vote on an issue where you win no matter what (or lose if you're a Lefty), stop by and "Cast Yer Vote On Evolution NOW!"

There are many more worthy blogs here on TH, but, since this post is already overly long, I'll refer you to the blog rolls on the blogs I've highlighted here. Happy reading.

And yet another
Okay, okay... I know you have enough reading material to get you through until next winter... but don't forget to add Mark Steyn's humorous and terrifying "America Alone: The End of the World as We Know It". I think Hugh Hewitt called it "standup Armeggedon," or something equally fitting.

Reading list
Try "Big Government...Poor Grandchildren."

I always find it amusing how people like you who fear Christianity have to reach all the way back to 1066 AD to find an example of violence. I also find it funny that you forget that the Crusades were fought against an enemy that had aggressively conquered Christian lands for hundreds of years and were still advancing. And that most people at the time could not read the Bible and didn't know what it teaches. Since the Bible was restored to the people in the Protestant Reformation and subsequent Catholic reforms, the world has seen less and less of these things from Christians. Which means the Bible wasn't the problem, it was that people were ignorant of it and not observing its principles.

But most of all it's funny how people like you who dredge up these centuries-old abberations, you place them in the context of contemporary morality. In which context no society at that time satisfies modern standards. In fact, studied in light of other nations at the time, Christianity has an impressive record. So let's live in the present, shall we?

Certitude cuts both ways. Communists were certain their radical social experiment would work, no matter if they had to kill millions of people to impliment it. Liberals are certain their radical social experiment will work, no matter if they have to allow millions of babies to be killed to impliment it. You see, it's not whether a person is certain or not, it's whether he/she is right about what he/she is sure of. For example, it's not wrong to be certain that if you jump off a 200 foot cliff you'll probably die. But if you're certain that jumping off a 200 foot cliff will be fun and not result in any injuries, that's a dangerous certainty because it's wrong.

I think at some level you realize this, because you seem pretty certain about every statement you make. So I suppose you would agree that certainty is not a problem in and of itself. The problem is, libs like you are certain that Christianity is evil and don't realize a Christian culture layed the foundation of a nation in which you enjoy a relatively fantastic amount of personal liberty and opportunity. So you seek to destroy Christian cultural expression, not understanding how far into the toilet you will drag this beautiful nation.

RedWhite&Blue
I agree with everythign you said.

EVERYONE who uses either the "...but in 311 AD the Christians..." or the "In DoesntApplyToChristiansicus Chapter 3:19 God says to kill the Cannanites in a specific historical context that hasn't existed in 3000 years" counter-argument (such that it is) is disingenious.

If those things the person is citing are truely troubling to them then Islam must trouble them 1000000 times more so because anything that is "bad" about Biblical or Historical Christianity is also manifested by Islam by design and Islam is designed specifically to promote all of those things that are evil and violent.

But since Islam doesn't appear to bother them then neither do the examples they provide.

Its the most dishonest of rhetorical tricks.
