Will the Dems' health care Christmas Present to America be an improvement or detriment to our health care system?

Breaking News: An American car company will soon be taken-over by a business person who has expertise in the car industry. And the guy “taking over” is actually “happy” about it.

As the bankrupt General Motors corporation seeks to get rid of it’s “non core” car brands, Roger Penske, the American race car driver-turned global business magnate, will soon be purchasing Saturn, and taking over the sales, marketing, and distribution of Saturn cars and parts.

Penske‘s company will not be manufacturing Saturn cars themselves - he’s soliciting bids from other companies to design and build the cars for him - but will focus instead on what the Penske group does best. "Our success has been with handling the business that is closest to the customer,“ Penske stated when the news was announced, “so I don't want us to get into our own manufacturing business.."

You may have ignored this news, and it may seem like “no big deal” now. But consider how this conflicts with the predictions and assumptions made by Washington politicians.

Recall that fateful day (November 18th) back in 2008, when the executives of Ford, G.M., and Chrysler, took their turns before Congress begging for their “share” of bailout cash. “This is about much more than just Detroit," then- G.M. President Rick Wagoner stated, "It's about saving the U.S. economy from a catastrophic collapse."

*** Special Offer ***

And it was presumed that catastrophe would necessarily ensue, if our government didn’t “bailout” the car companies. “We're concerned about the hundreds of thousands and millions of people who are involved in the automobile industry” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid rationalized 2 days later, “we want them to have the jobs..” If our tax dollars weren’t spent to save these companies from their own mismanagement, then, to follow Senator Reid’s logic, the companies would simply cease to exist, and “millions” would be unemployed.

But we all know what happened after the U.S. car exec’s groveled. Politicians insisted that without their meddling, the entire industry would collapse, and so they went about meddling. The Congress tried to pass a “car bailout bill,” but it failed. President Bush then used his executive powers to take money from the TARP (bank bailout) funds, and doled-out a few billion to G.M. and Chrysler (Ford had to good sense to say “no thanks”). In doing this, Bush completely defied the will of the people and the Congress, and kept Chrysler and G.M. afloat just long enough for Obama to get inaugurated.

And one inauguration and two additional car bailouts later, President Obama has now kicked and punched his way to the point of having GM and Chrysler in a headlock, and both companies are at his mercy. With Chrysler, President Obama has drawn law suits for his interfering in the relationship between the company and its secured creditors. Additionally, Chrysler executives are fearful of Obama’s coercive efforts to “force” a Chrysler-Fiat merger, believing that Fiat is in even worse financial health than Chrysler itself. As for G.M., President Obama claims that "our goal is to help GM get back on its feet ... and get out quickly, " but the Administration’s behavior suggests that G.M. will be, indeed, “government motors” for the foreseeable future.

So despite all the “without us they will fail” predictions from Washington, after some $50 billion of our hard-earned money being handed-over, and now with two of the nation’s automakers in the hands of one individual - Barack Obama - the companies are still failing. Yet in the midst of the doom and gloom, and despite the predictions of President Obama, Senator Harry Reid and other congressional Democrats, an American business owner and entrepreneur sees opportunity in the car industry and is excited to jump-in.

Roger Penske isn’t asking for a “bailout.” He isn’t even asking for special government-subsidized financing for his purchase. He wants Saturn, a product line deemed to be one of the least attractive on the G.M. roster, because he believes that he can make money with it, and he’s willing to risk his money and his good reputation to make it happen. “This (Saturn) is still a good business” Penske stated, “and we’re going to make it better.” In the process, it is believed that Penske’s acquisition will in the short-run save some 13,000 American jobs, and eventually create more.

For some, it’s hard to believe. But all this benefit is being derived- - for Penske, for his associates, for the can industry and for the global economy - without the expenditure of more of our tax dollars, and without President Obama coercing it. It’s happening at the hands of free people, freely choosing to take risks, to innovate, to create, and to produce.

This is the reality of American-styled Capitalism at work. I’m quite certain that most members of Congress lost sight of this reality long ago, and I suspect that President Obama knows nothing about it at all.

But it is a reality that the American citizenry must never forget.

Right on Roger Penske
It's great to see an American who has the money, team and talent to do something that helps thwart Obama's attempts to destroy the American economy.

I may even decide to make my next car a Saturn once Penske owns the brand. Especially since the Dodge Challenger I was thinking of buy will now be made by Fiat and have a four cylinder, if that big, motor in it.

Saturn
I own a Saturn. My wife and I have owned or leased seven. A good little car and a good philosophy followed by the company. The local dealership is great as well. It would be sad to see Saturn go under.
I wish Mr. Penske and all his investors all the best.

Cars People Want
You can bet that Roger Penske will build cars that people will actually want to buy. Bad news for Obama's Goverment Motors.

I think we should give Obama a buyout offer. It will save us all money in the future.

The good news is
that a guy who knows a thing or two about cars, and has plenty of capital(Penske's a multibillionaire) is going to run a car company. Can't help but be a success, it seems. The bad news is that his success will be a threat to the government, run by people who know nothing about cars, and who have zero capital. They will find a way to destroy Saturn.

Racing past GM
With, perhaps, one model exception the Saturn has been nothing more than an appliance on wheels. With Roger Penske at the wheel, the brand has a better chance for a checkered flag future.

CAPITALISM !
Two thumbs up for Mr. Penske. This is exactly what needed to be done to put obama and his cronies in their place. I for one will BUY nothing but SATURN'S as long as Mr.Penske is involved with the company. Next, someone needs to buy out one of the nations NEWSPAPERS and one of the LOCAL T.V. STATIONS so the average American's get the TRUTH about what is really going on in the country, instead of the one sided LIBERAL view that is forced down their throats.
Of course there will be some smart mouth out there saying, WHY DON'T YOU PUT YOUR MONEY WHERE YOUR MOUTH IS. Believe me I would in a heart beat, but I am just Hard-Working-American-Taxpayer, working 60 hrs. a week just to pay rent and feed my family. Enough Said.

WILL PENSKE USE UNION LABOR?

.....If so, then I will not buy his product ...

.....UNION SHOPS GUARANTEE HIGHER COSTS AND INFERIOR PRODUCTS .....COLOSSUS

I'd buy a Saturn from Roger.
Two couples we know have driven Saturns exclusively for years, and another friend just traded for a used one a few months ago. They're all very happy with them.

We don't need a car right now, so maybe after the stock of union made ones are gone, we'll go look at them.

I wouldn't buy a Gubmint Motors car if you paid me, and I'm looking askance at my 98 Dodge Ram 2500. It's still a workhorse and it's great Cummins engine gets 19 mpg, but Chrysler is a question mark too.

I heard a caller to Mark Levin's show defend the UAW, and how they are innocent bystanders in the destruction of GM... What a crock! I've been anti-union for years - now I'm adamantly so. They're a bunch of corrupt, lazy goons, muscle for dhimmicrats, with far less honor than than organized crime.

Watching "America, America" on Atlas Shrugged. It's about dhimmitude in 19th century Turkey - a good introduction to Sharia Law for the sheeple.

Obama will put restrictions on this
I guarantee, Obama will try to put significant restrictions on this purchase. He'll more than likely mandate the company be unionized and put limits on compensation. He won't be able to help himself and the UAW will be pushing him hard.

If Penske does buy Saturn and keeps the unions out, I would buy one. If the UAW is in anyway involved--forget it. All the unions do is save jobs of people who don't deserve to have their jobs saved and overburden companies with unaffordable benefit demands. The heads of the unions make huge salaries and do not open their books so the membership (or anyone else for that matter)can see how their dues are being spent.

Before anything is settled in either bankruptcy, the court should demand the UAW books be audited. The UAW is gatting a huge payback for their support of the Democrat party and will get more yet--and we the taxpayer will pay for it all.

Good for Roger
Now what would really be next is to see Rick Hendrick get involved with another company....
IF I was to even think about buying a new truck right now it would either be an F-150 [ Ford ] or maybe a Toyota...GM and the others can kiss my tail pipe....
I have said since this 3 card molly game began to let them fail, someone will come along and build a better mouse trap

PENSKE'S RECORD OF SUCCESS
Yesterday I read an article in the Houston Chroncile about Penske taking on the Saturn passenger car brand. A quote from the article, "If anybody can do it, he can do it. More seamlessly than anybody, that guy doesn't do anything unless he's already got the team in place". The article went on the praise the success and efforts of Penske. Even a rival team owner Chip Ganassi voiced strong support for Penske's latest project.

"It's very refreshing to know the entrepreneurial spirit is still alive in this country. We need more entrepreneurs and less bureaucracy. Roger has a way of cutting to the chase."

I guarantee we'll see more Saturns on the road in the future than the Obama mobil.

We are spending $2.5 million/min.
to create this year's interest payment of %434 BILLION.

Consider, Bush' $500 billion deficit one year was so terrible the nation had to vote in the Dems. to *save* us.

When interest goes up with the inflation that's coming, the interest could be $1 trillion a year by itself.

You and I will soon own $70 billion in GM/Chrysler debt (altho' the Sup. Ct. may stop the Chrysler *deal*), but the fed. gov't/UAW will own the companies themselves that are now ordered to make *green* cars (1% of the market) and not offer SUVs or trucks.

Meanwhile, pension funds for the NEA and PERS members are being trashed in favor of the UAW.

I would say a good business in the near future would be a used car lot.

Buy gold.

Go to tea parties. Teapartypatriots.org has the calendars.

Defiance
It may be true that "Bush completely defied the will of the people and the Congress..." He definitely defied our not-a-living-document Constitution.

It looks like the only positive mark for Democrat Lite Bush was his belated defense of our country against Islamic terrorists. His bipartisanship (collaborating with the enemy) in other areas made him almost as destructive as real Democrats.

Fascism
Capitalism is trying to save Saturn. Fascism will destroy it.

That is, a populace indoctrinated in socialist (government owned) schools will support so many "reasonable" government regulations on Saturn that the system will amount to fascism. When the company fails again, capitalism and the "evil" and "greedy" owners will again become the scapegoats.

who would you rather have...
Roger Penske or Harry Reid running your car company? It's as simple as that...if you still have any synapses!! A true capitalist or a true big governmentalist, that remains the question...huh??

Life long GM customers
We WERE life long GM customers. It was always important to our family to support the American car companies and we happen to like the GM brands and had great success with them. We never had problems with our GM cars. We bought basic Pontiacs and Chevies and drove them with love. We don't have any union members in our family or GM employees. We just felt it was our duty to support an American company.
NEVER AGAIN. We have two vehicles now and when we are in the market for new ones, we will shop Ford and now Penske's Saturn. Personally, I am very glad Saturn got out of the Government Motors group because I like the look of their vehicles. Now, they are a choice for us. If we as customers just "go along" with this travesty, our government will continue to buy up other companies and lie to us about "not wanting to run" them. We need to stand up to our government by NOT buying what they are selling us and tell them to stop. Pretty soon, our government will be picking and choosing which companies they want, forcing them to fail, printing money and buying them up. Everything we thought was impossible a few years ago is happening and it ain't good.

bulldog
"Pretty soon, our government will be picking and choosing which companies they want, .."

Sorry Rip, but we have been doing it for the last 8 years already. When Cheyne left Halliberton, making millions from his keen insights, he picked them as the new government hand out king. No bids contracts, and guaranteed profits were the order of the day, the most pure form of socialism since Stalin started his make over.

UPS is all union
There are two categories of employees at UPS teamsters and management.
In 2003 all employees that did not fit in those to positions were fired. My husband was one and he figures nation wide there were about 4,000 UPS employees fired.
What was noticed the majority were 55 years old and older. UPS got out of paying for their full retirement package.
Nice of the teamsters - uh.

Socialism and fascism
Taft, Halliburton is not an example of socialism (government ownership of businesses and other property).

However, almost all American companies are examples of fascism. Fascism is the illusion of private ownership while government sets all the important policies and procedures. Then, the "evil" and "greedy" nominal owners get the blame when the fascist system inevitably leads to disaster.

Isn’t America great?
Roger Penske, an entrepreneur, will have his work cut out for him, competing with dear leader and his 537 elves (and 22 czars). They can print money and make laws that will destroy Penske. And does anyone think that they wont, if he succeeds while they fail. You are kidding yourselves. I don’t hold out much hope for Ford either, the fact that they are global might save them.

I’m old enough to remember Nash, Packard, Henry J , Studebaker, and remember that stupid Kaiser? You couldn’t tell if it was coming or going. These all went out of business, and no one felt the need to use the taxpayers to save the jobs. Weren’t these also union jobs? I don’t remember. The big difference? This countries education system, then and now. Back in 50's people were not worried about feelings, so much.

Public (socialist) education
Yes, our "education" and indoctrination system is one of the root causes of our problems.

As Charles Darwin never said, "Socialist (government owned) schools are not the fittest and need the protection of an unconstitutional (illegal) monopoly arrangement in order to survive."

dumb article
Everybody knows that the auto bailouts begun by the Bushies, and the gov't takeovers by the Obamites, had nothing to do with saving Chrysler or GM. They were all about saving the UAW and their bloated benefit package, especially for retirees.

If GM had gone through real bankruptcy, they would have sold off brands like Saturn and Hummer anyway. This would have given them the cash they needed to reorganize. They would have voided the UAW contract, gotten rid of the legacy costs, and become instantly profitable.

What needed saving was not the US auto companies, but the UAW. I call this a dumb article because Mr. Hill knows this, too. All the politicians' whining about saving those zillions of jobs and the whole US and world economy was just a smokescreen, because they couldn't have sold the American people the idea that we need to save the UAW's ridiculous retirement benefits.

false hopes...?
The Saturn was a darn good car. I currently drive a 2003 Ion -- 153,000 miles and it still doesn't use oil. But Saturns aren't made any more. What they call a Saturn is actually an Opel with a Saturn sticker on it.

The real Saturns had those plastic body panels that were rustproof -- a big plus when you drive in salt four months of the year. And the dentproof panels made a big difference in many circumstances -- I have had two minor deer collisions in Saturns that left me with no damage, while a sheet-metal car would have needed expensive repairs.

But Saturn dropped making real Saturns with plastic body panels. The current Saturn Aura pretty much nothing but a fake Toyota. It's a nice fake Toyota, but why buy a fake Toyota when you can buy a real one? I really don't see Penske or anyone else making this company work out unless they get a unique product, like they used to have.

Penske's Track Record
If Roger is sucessful in his bid to acquire Saturn, it will be his second such deal with GM. Years ago, he bought GM's floundering Detroit Diesel division. Within a short time, he turned DD into a profitable, vibrant enterprise. If the Obots controlling GM these days don't put deal breaking conditions in place, Saturn could flourish under Penske's guidance.

ANOTHER MIS-LEADING COLUMN
I would never say anything to detract from Mr. Penske's success in becoming a billionaire,HOWEVER, the 13 thousand jobs being saved here are those of car salesmen-- not American manufacturing jobs.

The cars to be sold will be Korean built by Samsung, based on Nissan designs courtesy of Renault/Nissan of France.

Just as the new Fiat (Chrysler) 500 will be built in Mexico. Just as the windmills we'll be buying are from India and Scandinavia. Just as those nuclear power plants will be bought from Westinghouse- this unit of Westinghouse now owned by the Japanese.

As a footnote, please see the recent Wall Street Journal article pointing out that the New General Motors is sure to be an accounting success. Basically it says that with all of the debt now converted to equity, it will be able to show a profit since it won't have to show all of that nasty interest expense from the billions of tax dollars received from we the taxpayers. Guess who will take the credit for making GM "profitable" again? Another government success story courtesy accounting tricks.

Overseas
And just why will the major portions of the new Saturns be built overseas? Once again, the "evil" and "greedy" owners will be the scapegoats, but high corporate taxes and fascist (government micro-management) policies will be the cause.

Solutions
There are three major detriments to the automobile industry. (1)Environmentalists, (2)Unions and (3)Government takeover.
There are (3) solutions: (1)Abolish The EPA);(2)abolish Unions (3) Abolish the present government and start over.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

EPA
Abolishing the EPA is not as simple a solution as it seems at first. The competition aspect of capitalism rewards entrepreneurs who dump their waste in the nearest river as that is a very cost effective procedure. Our problem is finding a deterrent that stops short of government regulation of every aspect of running a business. This excessive meddling is also known as fascism and can lead to socialism such as when government finally grabbed ownership of GM which now stands for Government Motors).

Penske
will likely get a "sweet heart" deal and then turn over production to maybe Saudi Arabia. Who know where this goes?

Taft!!!

"Pretty soon, our government will be picking and choosing which companies they want, .."

"Sorry Rip, but we have been doing it for the last 8 years already. When Cheyne left Halliberton, making millions from his keen insights, he picked them as the new government hand out king."

He exercised his options when he left Haliburton. Big whoop! I exercise options.

For the ten billionth time, Haliburton and Schlumberger (French company) provide good and perform services that NO OTHER COMPANIES IN THE WORLD CAN PROVIDE OR PERFORM. I know this for a fact because I have been doing business with both companies for years.

"No bids contracts"

See above.

"and guaranteed profits were the order of the day"

Contract prices are part of the agreements entered into between the parties. Cheney did not negotiate the contracts. Lawyers in both the government and the company would have done that.

"the most pure form of socialism since Stalin started his make over."

Please Stalin never had a corporation that was as successful of Haliburton or Schlumberger.

Not that it applies in this particular situation, but I think that you are confusing Stalin's communism with Mussollini's Fascism. Fascism is government control over the means of production in a country's main industries or all.

UAW Bailout, Not GM or Chrysler!!
Obama and the congress bailed out the UAW and not the GM or Chrysler corporations. Obama and the Liberal Congress Pumped tens of billions into GM and Chrysler to Fund the Union Contracts. This was classic Political Payback by Obama and Congress for their financial and other support in getting this Scoundrel, Obama elected.

There is nothing more to the story.

And, as far as the problems that GM and Chrysler had with profitability, this was caused by Government Meddling With CAFE and other costly regulations and litigations, as well as the huge corporate taxes imposed on U.S. businesses. The reason that so many of our manufacturing concerens have gone off shore is to escape a Dictatorial Government that Has Agencies and Departments that Regulate and Control them making it too costly to survive as a viable company in the USA. And, on top of the Regulations, taxes are the other culprit.

Congress has singlehandedly destroyed the manufacturing base in this country.

We need to Dismantle the Entire Federal Bureaucracy, save for the Defense Department. We do not need an Energy Dept, an Education Dept, An EPA, the HHS, and we certainly do not need the 20 or so Czars that Obama has created.

IT is time for some sanity in this nation. No more debates about government spending. It is time to End the Departments and Agencies that are Spending the Monies the congress extracts from workers and property owners.

Greyhawk
You stated the whole disgusting problem accurately. Now the problem is how to undo the damage done to our country. The next election will tell whether Americans have awaken.

Roger Pensky and Saturn
I hope washington and GM are watching very closely, because they are about to get a lesson on selling cars. Pensky is one of the sharpest business types in the USA, everything he touches turns gold, and now he is going to touch Saturn. Look Out world.

Conservatives in Europe
Its great for Saturn to be taken over by Pensky He will save the Brand, but has anybody noticed the elections in Europe? all of the socialist electorates are being tossed out and replaced by conservatives I hope B-HO is watching.

Should have gone bankrupt in November
Remember when OMC (Outboard Marine Corporation) went bankrupt? Now Evinrude is a better product than OMC ever dreamed.

If GM & Chrysler had gone bankrupt in October or November they would already be up and running as many smaller companies. They probably would have created more jobs, and be well on the way to producing better products.

It's called evolution.

What Obama said.

Obama said bankruptcy is not an option.

He was wrong.

Obamas said he doesn't want to run car compainies.

Then he fired the CEO of GM, dictated what cars they will have to build, closed dealerships, violated property rights and rule of law.

Obama said he would not raise taxes on anyone making less than 250,000. Then immediately raised the cigarette tax on the poor with plans to raise taxes on gasoline, Cell phones, alcohol, internet useage, and more federal sales taxes.

Obama said we need quick action and "Shovel Ready" stimulus.

The proceeded to spend billions on dog parks, tattoo removal, welcome centers for illegal workers. Meanwhile over 2 million jobs are gone.

Obama said he Stimulus package will save 35 Police Officer Jobs in Cinncinatti.

Now we find out 300 Cinncinatti Police Officers will be laid off.

Obama said we need to close Gitmo.

He has yet to explain why? He has yet to say where the Gitmo Detainees will go. He has yet to reveal any plan?

Obama said if we are less arogant with other foreign leaders, they will support our efforts.

England said no, France said no, Spain said no, Germany said no, Italy said no, Saudi Arabia said no, Turkey said no, Greece said no, Canada said no, to his requests for assistance.

Obama said Military Trials violate the "spirt of American values". Now we find out he will be accelerating the use of Military Tribunals.

Obama said the U.S. will not dictate to others nations. Then he tells Israel they must stop settlements,

Obama said our healthcare system is broken.

But he left out Liberals are the people who broke it.

So Clearly Obama is wrong an aweful lot.

Liberals think Obama is wonderful.

My Money is on Penske
I'm just waiting to buy stock in a Penske company. He's a winner and a capitalist. I know capitalists and Obama, you're no capitalist.

I'm so glad he's with Saturn!
I LOVE my Saturn- they are all I drive!! I have never- not once- had a problem with any of my Saturns; and I put a couple hundred thousand miles on them before I'm done.

My money is also on Penske
I don't who decided that Saturn is not a viable car model. They are an excellent buy for your money. I've known all along that even if GM and Chrysler went belly up, someone would step in and fill the vacuum. I am still amazed that this basic economic fact escaped so many of our Representatives and Senators. Are they that ignorant about capitalism? Well, yeah, they are. Long live good old American initiative and entrapeneurship. Down with government intervention in our businesses and our everyday lives. Goodbye Obama, Hello Sarah!

Dear UsefulIdiots
I don't know why you use that handle because obviously you are not one of the useful idiots.
I had to chuckle at your last sentence, "Liberals think Obama is wonderful."

I guess that tells us all we need to know about liberals.

I agree with much that has been said
in the comments. Greyhawk is absolutely correct. This was not a bailout of GM or Chrysler as was stated as the reason, it is about saving the UAW, who contributes so much money to the Democrats. Bankruptcy would have allowed GM to get out of the contracts with the UAW. The Democrats don't give a rat's hind end about GM or Chrysler, but they do car about their UAW donations. I think Roger Penske can make Saturn a profitable company, if the government is held in check and not allowed to interfere. The problem is that the government has gotten so out of control, that I don't know if the Marxist running the show can help themselves from trying to control everything. My wife and I own Japanese cars (built in the U.S.) I won't buy a GM car as long as the government is controlling it. I won't buy a Chrysler as long as the government is controlling it (and closing dealerships that contributed money to the Republican Party and candidates). I would by a Saturn just as a political statement once Penske takes over. I think I want a Saturn Sky Redline in metallic red. That way I can drop the top and the Feds can see me flip them off.
P.S. I love my country but hate my government.

St. Denis In Obama's Red America
Good afternoon,
You state that Halliburtons no bid contract are a form of socialism?? I disagree totally. When it came to a company providing the services they specialize in, they were awarded contracts mostly because they were the only ones that could do those jobs. They had capabilities that only 1 or 2 other firms did and they were MUCH more experienced. I am NOT saying that Cheney didnt grease the wheels BUT that was NOTHING compared with Obamas throwing away BILLIONS to save his unions. Sorry but theres no comparison.
