Was the Copenhagen Global Warming Summit Walk-Out a Win for the U.S.?

People are angry. Global oil prices have doubled over the past year, sending fuel prices skyrocketing. Diesel fuel, in particular, is outrageously high, putting the squeeze on the farming and trucking industries, and driving the price of nearly everything upward, especially the cost of food. Truckers have even taken to “demonstrating” in the streets of the capitol city.

The elected head of the nation’s government seems unable to do much of anything to alleviate the problem. But appearing as though he’s doing something is better than appearing as though he’s doing nothing, so he schedules a trip to Saudi Arabia for several “high level talks” with oil producers.

Does this sound like a description of the series of events that led up to President Bush’s trip to the Middle East a month ago? You remember that trip, don’t you? It gave us those hideous photos of our current U.S. President holding hands with Saudi King Abdullah, along with the headline “Saudi‘s Rebuff Bush.”

Well, the passage above could very well be used

to describe what was going on here at home back in February, March and April of this year. But it is actually a description of what’s been going on in London the past few weeks, as British Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced plans last Friday to pay his own special visit to “the King” later this month, on June 22nd.

Same problem, essentially the same description, but a different country. And here’s another difference between the two stories: in the United States, we have the resources to get ourselves out of our dilemma - - at least partially - - in the short-run.

It’s no mystery that the United States is home to its own substantial oil and gas resources. It is also true that oil corporations, themselves, are NOT the villains behind the skyrocketing fuel prices. The problem is, without a doubt, the United States Congress.

Currently, it is a violation of federal law to search for oil in the Pacific Ocean, in the Gulf of Mexico, in the Atlantic Ocean, and in Alaska. Similarly, it is against the law to search for oil shale in the continental United States. Congress has the power to change federal laws that restrict such energy exploration and development, but has chosen not to do this.

And if “Congress” is to blame for these harmful laws, that means that there is plenty of blame to go around among Republicans and Democrats alike. Republicans controlled the Congress for nearly twelve of the last thirteen and a half years, and during that time the stupidity on energy policy remained intact.

Yet for the past seventeen months, Democrats have been in control of Congress. And what has been the response from our nation’s legislative body regarding our most recent energy crisis? For one, the Democrats introduced legislation that would raise taxes on oil companies. Acting as if “companies” actually pay taxes (rather than passing along the additional costs to their customers), the Democrats chose to play - - to borrow a term from my friend and mentor Hugh Hewitt - - a game of “Sesame Street economics.”

Were the Democrats’ corporate tax increase to actually become law, it would do nothing to help expand our nation’s energy resources, and would, indeed, drive our energy costs further upward. But never mind the need for real solutions - - if you’re in Congress and you’re a Democrat, its good to look like you’re being “tough” on oil companies.

And on the point of “looking tough,” Congressional Democrats have also conducted several “investigations” and “hearings” as of late, to determine if oil companies have been doing anything illegal or unscrupulous so as to drive-up the prices of their products. One of my favorite moments from the “big oil hearings” was when Congressman Ed Markey of Massachusetts demanded to know why the Exxon Mobil Corporation was not investing at least 10% of its profits into the development of alternative, “renewable” energy sources. That’s like demanding to know why the cattle ranching industry is not investing in the development of a soy-based meat substitute product - - it was silly and illogical, yet it was an opportunity for Mr. Markey to look and sound tough in the face of big oil.

So while Congressional Democrats continue to try and appear like they‘re “getting tough” on the oil industry, how about if Congressional Republicans really “get tough” on congressional stupidity? Attitudes and tempers at the pump are already starting to get testy, and gasoline is expected to approach five dollars a gallon by the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

There is a huge opportunity to be seized for the Republicans, if they can figure out how to point-out the foolishness and destructiveness of the Democrats’ proposals, and then propose a real solution to the problem, and then make it happen.

But can the Republican Party, at such a time as this, actually rise to the occasion? And what precisely is the message to voters? And who are the spokespersons for this message? Thoughtful answers to these questions could change the outcome of election 2008.

Drill Here, Drill More, Pay Less!!!
Newt Gingrich's petition is apporaching 1 million signatures. Go to American Solutions dot com if you haven't signed on yet!!! Wake up Congress!!! You are right Austin, the Republicans could be big winners with solutions NOW!!! When I pump gas now I visualize a picture of Harry Reid and Nancy Palosi (sic) with the price of gas pasted on their foreheads!!!

AN-Where?

I say drill a few holes, in Congresspeople (PC) as well as Alaska.

Great column; the problem is the GOP

nominee is one of the blockheads who continues to contribute to the problem rather than the solution.

Republican and Democrat parties dying
The Republican and Democrat party are becoming extinct. The Democrat and Republican party use to be your fathers party. There has been no difference for quite a while.

Energy will be a top issue and the procrastination of energy sources such as building Nuclear power plants/grids and Refineries will contribute to the 2 party systems demise.

4 phases of inflation. Americans will be wiped out of wealth in the next year or 2.

It's our own oil, stupid
Nancy Pelosi, Dictator of the House, continues to screw the American people. She has the entire Democrat Congress voting the Party line and that Party line is against the US harvesting the oil on our own land that is rightfully our's. Someone needs to send this woman back to San Francisco and tell her to stay there. She loves the parades. Make her job the city council interface with NAMBLA where she can march with them at all the parades. She does it anyway so she should enjoy her new job and maybe the shackles can be removed from the Democrats in Congress. They can start acting like human beings instead of little marxist clones of the Dictator of the House.
When are the Blue Dog Democrats, who were elected because they feigned conservatism, going to start acting how they campaigned??? When will they stand up, take their party back and make it once again the party it used to be??
When will someone, anyone, educate John McCain??? Anwr is a tundra, it is not a pristine little place. Someone please educate this man before November. We are getting sick and tired of listening to him be so stupid, naive and block headed. He's willing to cross over and become a Democrat but he's not willing to cross over and be a conservative. Frankly, it would not be a shock to see him pick Hillary Clinton as his VEEP.

Term Limit Congress!!
Our "fearless leaders" aren't really stupid, after all their only priority is to get re-elected. They are ambitious, petty, greedy little bastardas, most of them lawyers, and what can you expect from such a despicable group?
Decent Americans, a long time ago, have given up the idea of serving this country. I, for one, will never again vote for anyone who is a lawyer, they are evil!

BrianR

You nailed it. Bunch of self-serving maroons "serving" in Congress.

Yeah!
I just picture Feinstein and her so called "tough questions" to the oil CEO's. She, Boxer and the rest of them did a great job in CA when Enron collapsed and our electric bills jumped 3-4 times higher. I remember seeing people on the news selling items because they never imagined their bills to be that high. I have been waiting since 2004 for that refund.

Our Super Unleaded should be $5.00 by Monday or Tuesday. The gas stations around me have removed the signs that hang on the poles and have propped signs up at ground level. They change the price so much, they probably just wanted them closer!

A Modest Proposal...

No, I did not think of it first, and I cannot give credit to the one who did (short memory span),
but we should also render the fat, bloated carcasses of the 'living dead', that now populate our Nation's capitol.

The oil, thus obtained, would meet my energy needs for months.

Gingrich: Three ways to reduce the cost
What do you think?

HOTAIR-We cannot drill our way out of this,” Pelosi reminds us. True enough. If we only drill in ANWR, if we continue to decline to exploit ocean reserves and the mind-boggling amount of oil shale available to us, then it’s true, drilling won’t do much good. And since we can’t solve the problem solely by drilling, why bother trying to solve it in part, no? A lefty friend made the argument to me today that rising gas prices are actually sort of a virtue because the higher they go the more we’ll be forced to carpool and use public transportation, and the more that’ll wean us from our oil dependency. To which I reply, sounds like a fine idea for a campaign platform. Let His Holiness run on the idea: $10 a gallon and carpools for everyone. He seems to be open to suggestion; let’s see what that considerable charm of his can accomplish when he really puts it to use. Yes we can be crippled by inflation.

Austin
Anyone with an I.Q. above room temperture can see that the Democrats in congress are to blame for the high gas prices. Drilling for oil in and around America is the only solution. What can we do to inform the voters of this fact??????

Ralph
The problem is, about half or more of the US population doesn't have an IQ above room temperature. Proof? Dems control Congress.

Time for HUGE DEMONSTRATIONS
Well, all this 'talk', real anger, and no action is disturbing. Who is going to LEAD the drive to bring 10 million plus to a revolutionary march on Washington NOW..to tell them to Drill NOW or else suffer a real old style revolution? It is overdue that rather than Blog to feel good..ACT in out best interest and get the message out. Anyone out there who might lead this? Newt Not!!Remember his global warming bench ad with Pelosi the communist? So, who will lead us?

The broken promices of the 2006 election
I thought the Dems were supose to take care of our problems, that is what they said before they were elected in the last election. Since that time look at what has happen to the price of gas.Maxine Walters let it slip what their real adjenda is, take control of every thing, They are doing it through the pretex of GW. GW is the back door to control over our energy, which is control over the economy, which will be control over our lives. It is no wonder the Saudi's said they would not increase their out put. Why should they want to deplete their dollar crop so that the U.S. can save our pristine aeras to be free of clutter. You know those pestie little oil rigs, and of course the wind towers, and than we can't do nuclear, and oh my can't do coal. Apparently the Democtrats have not heard of the new tecknowledge to make coal cleaner, nuclear safer, oil drilling hi-teck. No the Dems want to pull a Hugho Chevez. Wake up Republicans this could be the year voters will show our outrage at the stupidity that seems to rule in Congress. You need to tell the lefties and the environmentalists that we do not want to go back to the stone age, or have anyone tell us how to live our lives, especially the size of family we can have. Don't kid your self, if the Left gets it way that is exactly what they will want to do.

They think we're stupid
The democrats in congress do not realize that all of America is not as stupid as their party members.
They think we can't see that everything they have done for the past 2 years has been a stall tactic. They don't want anyting good to happen til after Nov 2008, the election, and are happy to see the people suffer because they think it'll benefit them (no veto pen to stop them after Jan 2009).

They think we're stupid, and if we don't vote them out of there, they will be right.

Larry
It is July 12th at Washington DC.

I have donated to the March. Only the begginning.

Time to call DC Nitwits
Everyday until they get the message. If enough people did that they may wake up, at the minimum it will drive them nuts like we are being driven nuts

The oil is here already.
I agree that Congress is a great fault, but there is something else!! There is a well on Gull Island, in the Prudoh oil fields on the Northern slope of Alaska that has been classified by our wonderful government since it came in in the 70's. It has enough oil and natural gas in it to last America 200 years.The author of a little known book, called the Energy non-crisis spilled the beans and a lot of other interesting facts that the poweres that be don't want you to know about. However, if you check the internet you will find a list of other books he has written, but they don't have written by the title; No longer available; Author has been threatened. His name is Lindsey Williams "Chaplain of the Alaska Pipeline

TODAY is the first day...
of the rest of our lives and now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country!

The so called "rubber stamp" republican congress did not exist. That's why they got voted out. On the dem promises, none of which have begun to be addressed. 17 months and what have they done besides investigations, hearings, nonbinding resolutions? Reid and Pelosi epnd more time in front of the microphone bank (gladly supplied by the media) than they do working. They too will be voted out.

Vito
You need therapy for your continual non-productive anger that colors your judgment.

Congress
When I look at Congress and both sides of the aisle I see a symbolism of what is wrong with this country in a nutshell.

Stupidity.

I blame both parties equally for a lack of energy policy.

Free Market
That is the energy policy that we need.

July Revolution in Washington (SAM)
Sam, about the only good thing that old Ron "the nut" Paul provides us is a needed reminder about remaining true to the Constitution. PROBLEM: This July march in DC will be mired with so many Ron Paul fanatics and issues, that the OIL/GAS issue will NOT get noticed unfortunately. IF the America people are angry then we need to MARCH ON DC and CONGRESS solely about OIL DRILLING, CALL THEM, WRITE THEM, VOTE THEM OUT--time for URGENCY AND SERIOUS ACTION or else live with the Decline of America which is underway. Time is critical as both Presidential candidates don't get it either.

Oil and the Developing World
let us not forget the rest of the world. The Dems love the 'global test' phrase so lets apply the "global test" to the recent no drill attitude of the Libs. The rest of the globe is suffering from out of control fuel and food prices that we could do something about; so lets drive costs down by drilling for our own oil, and thus making the price of oil from present producers go down. Simple econonmics right? We win and the rest of the world wins even more so because they dont have any extra monies for expensive gas or food that has become very costly to transport. I think the no drill policy fails the "global test" in no uncertain terms. What do you think Mr Dean? I hear you think 'Republicans dont care if children are going to bed hungry'. I think your the one who really has no care for those little kids living in the developing world who are going to bed hungry because oil has become so expensive.

Larry
Ron Paul's supporters are not crazy, they are more intelligent than your average person. Ron Paul supporters understand that the dollar will continue to plummet and inflation will run rampant. They understand that the Federal Reserve is causing prices to rise with money printing. They understand that our illegal immigration is a problem.

If you think Ron Paul's supporters are nuts for understanding our economic problems people will get what they deserve. Higher taxes and inflation and a dollar collapse. Ron Paul supporters are not waiting on people who are sitting on the fence who talk and complain (which I do). At least Ron Paul supporters are doing something about it which says a lot more than other conservatives who are being passive and taking the governement's crap.

You will not consider them crazy when gas prices are $20 dollars.

Ron Paul's website (dailypaul.com) gets more hits than Hannity, Laura Ingraham, and Mike Gallagher. Do an alexa.com search on traffic hits. Ron Paul's supporters aren't crazy they are patriotic.

Bush and oil
"The elected head of the nation’s government seems unable to do much of anything to alleviate the problem."

Of course not. He's in part to blame for the "problem". Congress is to be blamed for the rest. It's inflation, stupid, not oil. It's what we have to pay for bigger government under Bush.

Congress is Stupid
The fake global warming crisis is the foundation of our oil problem. The Democrats and their leftist allies are using a myth to scare people into giving them the power.

There is no identified mechanism that would indicate that increased CO2 in the atmosphere can cause a significant increase in global temperatures. The question we must ask our political leaders is simply:
"What is the scientific described mechanism that would cause global warming from CO2 increase?"

Water vapor has a higher specific heat and is 95% of the greenhouse gas in the atmosphere. This means that CO2 increase cannot possibly be significant.

Unless we destroy the fundamental error that underlies the global warming nonsense, we are doomed to third world status.

Overruled
At this point, over the roar and cry from the green lobby, the majority of the American public have had it with political bungling as a solution for out of control gas and energy prices.

In spite of this majority however, Congress invents one excuse after another as to why we should not end our dependence on foreign oil by tapping our own abundance.

And what does Congress say to the voice of the people? "You are out of order, objection overruled." It is high time that our haughty members in Congress get overhauled.

What are you going to do about it!
Take a stand. Everybody can complain about C02's, refineries. Get off your a*ss and do something.

It is our federal reserve that is debasing the dollar which is driving oil prices up along with a lack of domestic production.

THE GOVERNMENT IS TO BLAME! THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CRISIS WE WILL BE IN.

http://www.revolutionmarch.com

congress and oil
I can't believe what is hapning. The Democrats have given the republicans a chance to regrain
the congress and the white house and the republicans have done nothing. The country needs to develop it's oil and gas resources. It needs the domesticly produced energy economicaly and for our security. It is beyond stupid that we have adopted this self destructive behavior.

Reps. can win on
drill for oil here and close the borders.

Dems. and their green allies have stopped domestic energy for 30 years:
they have stopped oil exploration and drilling everywhere;
they have ended nuclear;
they oppose coal;
they don't build refineries;
they oppose natural gas storage (Kennedy);
they don't even support wind (Kennedy and Kerry--heaven forefend they should see a wind turbine from their yachts);
they don't want coal gasification;
they have locked up shale oil;
they don't want to develop coal tar;
they prohibit extensive coal mining;

THE TRUTH IS THEY WANT THE US TO BE ENDANGERED BY IMPORTING SO MUCH OF OUR ENERGY NEEDS WHILE THEY TAKE MONEY FROM FEMO-GREENO-HOMO-WHACKO LEFTISTS WHILE TAXING US AND MOANING ABOUT OIL PROFITS.

ATTACKING THE OIL COMPANIES IS LIKE KILLING THE POLICE BECAUSE CRIME IS HIGH. AND WHERE WILL OIL COME FROM WHEN THE OIL CO.'S ARE PUNISHED ENOUGH?

Dan in Nevada
Thought you might like to know a little unknown tidbit. Out of all the excuses that Congress does give, here is one they won't tell you:
We get a kickback on all the oil we buy from the Mideast except two sources: (1)Iraq and (2) Iran and our wonderful government uses this to pay the interest on the National Debt.

I write McCain every day to
start campaigning on oil and energy in America and close the borders. He could win on them.

Go to his website and send a message.

Write a letter.

Support McCain or you will get Obama.

MARCH ON WASHINGTON - 1st AMENDMENT
MARCH ON WASHINGTON JULY 12TH, SHOW THEM YOU WANT THEM TO DRILL AND STOP INFLATING THE DOLLAR TO PAY FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION ORGIES, IRAQ ORGIES, AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PROGRAM ORGIES....

CONGRESS IS AFRAID OF YOU....

A GOOD IDEA
to get those IDIOTS in D.C. movin' on the "drill here/drill now thing would be to have a complete motor blockade of truck and other large vehicles of all the airports, and other transportation centers within 50 miles of D.C. just as they are recessed. MAKE 'EM STAY THERE UNTIL THEY LET THE OIL COMPANIES DRILL.

Brown should come to U.S., not S.A.
If the U.S. is not producing as much as we should then we are as much a part of the global problem as Saudi Arabia is. If other world leaders would complain publicly that the U.S. is not doing its job in producing what it has that might change the political situation here.

Democracy is
the theory that the common people know what they want and deserve to get it good and hard. [H. L. Mencken]

Opportunity Knocks
Will anyone be home in the republican party to answer the door. That is the question. The repubs have a candidate that is just not with it, he is truly with the dems on the issue of energy. The repubs have to remove themselves from McCain and start yelling from the rooftops...DRILL, BUILD NUCLEAR, DRILL shale coal, in other words do something. It is time. This issue will gather the USA citizen around and really make the repubs stand out against the democrats policy of no drilling, no nuclear, absolutely no shale coal, etc. It is an issue that could actually win the repubs some votes and possibly even control of
Congress if they would just get on the bandwagon and go off on their own away from McCain...it is a WINNER...ENERGY FREEDOM NOW!! txpoljldy

Illegal?
It is not ileagle to search for or process "oil shale" in the Continental US. While there are serious environmental concerns it appears that the oil companies have tried and found it to be too expensive. Of course that was back in 2000-2004 before the price of oil topped $30.00/barrel.

http://www.rand.org/pubs/monographs/2005/RAND_MG414.pdf

68 million acres not used
It's interesting how conservatives always rant about all that territory where we aren't drilling (never mentioning the environmental reasons why that is so) but fail to note that 68 million acres of land, offshore and onshore, are being leased by oil companies and NOT being used to produced energy. Gee, why do you suppose that would be? You don't suppose their trying to keep supply low and prices high, consumers be damned?

Here's information on a bill to force those companies to get busy producing energy on the public land---OUR land---they already have leased:

http://www.dems.gov/index.asp?Type=B_PR&SEC=%7BD68CD0B2-144 2-4804-9F6B-AF67DE7FF585%7D&DE=%7B792831D5-51ED-4D6F-9FA0-D 79E843F52AA%7D

PULL UP! PULL UP! ....MAYDAY...
Why do I feel like we are on the verge of an engine stall? Without inflation, what would our economic numbers look like? Economics and competition don't seem to be working, but speculative trading does. While they may be earning a profit for their investors, they're helping tank the economy creating a larger wealth gap. Our smiling majority leaders in Congress don't seem to give a crap! ALL members of congress should be looking for new jobs come January...fired for lack of job performance. Of course, big money is behind our gov't policy from the career congressmen to the freshmen. They're all bought and paid for. Reagan is rolling over in the grave. His economic engine now needs an overhaul. The politicians need to reverse the drift to the left. But alas, perhaps were on the home stretch for the great and dreadful day.

Oil politics
There is only one thing wrong with holding these oil hearings. None of the players know just why the price of oil keeps going up with speculators leading the way. The plumb is dehydrated, gone bad.
What can happen if the oil price in $US double or triples before the election. That is Andrews forecast and has a probability of being right at about 93%. Who will become the scapegoats--oil execs, congresspeople, business, transporters, China & other heavy users, or who could it be? None of the above, for they a just following the trend for disaster and a socialist collapse. Andrews

B. C. History
The Ice age was a critical ecological disaster. It was also the beginning of the world we live today. For early humans it was a hard time and many cultures disappeared.

When early humans were confronted by the great Ice Age ecological disaster, there was a proto-Liberal among the Neolithic men. He was a wimpy fellow who refused to hunt animals and mostly stayed back whining among the women.

“Is being snowing for forty days straight and it is all your fault," he whimpered, "inventing fire and producing all those greenhouse gases,” he continued, “we need to abandon all of our evil technology and go back to being apes,” he proposed.

Fortunately, the hunters of that time after giving careful consideration to what the proto-Liberal had to say decided he was worthless and the very next day used him for bait. They killed a polar bear and feasted on it for five days.

And that is how Humans survived Climate Change

For the record,
While McCain (erroneously) opposes ANWR drilling, he supports coastal and continental drilling. He must push this issue more vocally in order to secure victory in November.

Victims of bad government
Just as millions of people suffer and die in Africa as victims of bad government, we Americans are suffering from bad government policies.
Not going after the estimated 100+ billions of barrels of oil available as a natural resource amounts to unilateral disarmament in the face of Arab oil producers.
The fiasco of using more energy that we get from it to produce ethanol, at the expense of increased food prices the world over is a affront to intelligence.
What will it take to get the knuckleheads in Congress, including the GOP candidate from the house of blowhards, to wise up?
God deliver us from the curse of bad government.
